The cables of an infallible machine is the flesh’s perfect imitation of the feathers of an incorruptible angel, and as such I can only assume that the key to something greater than even divinity lies within that of which is yet to be constructed, but is inarguably mechanical .

do you think they'll ever invent a work system that doesn't actively sabotage the people that it's supposedly built for

#context: they asked me to use a new version of the software I use at my job#it has a 'shiny and easy to use' UI (it's too simplified for devs aka the people actually using the program)#and is functionally worse. it is actively making my job harder if not downright impossible#(<- won't give me the option to turn off buggy features)

"Eat."
Tubbo turned around from where he has digging for the red body paint to see Dream push the offering plate full of berries back to him. The god had only eaten about a third of them.
"No, they're for you. I'm not supposed to eat them."
Dream slapped his tail against the ground once, his whiskers pointing back as he growled, squinting his large black eyes.
He had crawled out of the Snowchester sea with the form of a seal and Ranboo's shirt on his mouth like he was scuffing the other, and he had yet to pick a new form.
"You're goddamn tiny, you need them more then I do. You would look like a runt if you weren't strong. Eat."
"I'm not sure that's how it works bossman."
Tubbo sighs but he grabs a handful of sweet berries and shoves them in his mouth, ignoring the way they pop as he chews them. It almost feels like he's swallowing mini fireworks.
Dream hums, watching him eat the first handful closely before relaxing, turning his attention elsewhere.
#the dog barks#god of the wild#...this doesn't feel long enough for a scroll tag#the footnotes#tubbo is not allergic to sweet berries this is very much a 'you're eating an offering' reaction#Also#a thing about Dream is that he rarely looks passebly human#when everyone else shifts they are running animal software on human hardware with a few gadgets#Dream however always looks like a animal that can turn into a human and f not putting in the effort to make it look good#it can unerve people because sometimes his features just look wrong

Something that's been on my mind for a while is that a lot of artists have been struggling to find programs that work with their budgets. Adobe's prices are... infamous, to say the least, and there seems to be a sharp learning curve for the more affordable options. And if you're like me, you might not feel comfortable with pirating to get an art program that is out of your price range. So here's a list of free art/editing tools. Any options without links are either mobile apps or can only be downloaded on Macs: Options without ads or watermarks:
FireAlpaca (notes: while this is an art program at heart, it can also be used as basic photo editing software once you get the hang of it. There is also a blog dedicated to tutorials on how to use FA in case you get stuck)
Medibang (note: the aforementioned FireAlpaca blog has some information on this software as well)
Krita (note: also available as an app for android and Google devices)
Storyboarder (notes: not to be confused with "Storyboarder.AI". While this program does require your email address before downloading, it is safe to use as far as I know (but please use caution regardless))
Pixilart (notes: link leads to browser version, also available as a mobile app)
Audacity (notes: apparently, the company behind this software, Muse Group, have also created a separate, subscription-based AI-voice program. I am unsure if it uses AI in a way that is generally considered to be ethical, like SynthV does, or if it follows the trends typically expected of those kinds of applications. The reason that I include this information is that I want to give everyone the ability to make an informed decision about whether or not they want to use anything from Muse Group, as I know many users on this site are anti-AI. However, I also know that some of those users wouldn't mind using Audacity since downloading it wouldn't be giving Muse Group monetary support - hence why the program is staying on the list.)
Clipchamp (notes: there are also paid tiers for this program. It is also available in-browser and as an iOS app. Furthermore, please be aware that there are some optional features that use AI)
iMovie (note: also available as a mobile app on iOS devices)
DramaQueen (notes: this is a software used to write scripts for plays, movies, etc. While it does require you to fill out some information before downloading, as far as I am aware, it is safe to use (but as always, use your own discretion))
Options that do have ads, watermarks, or microtransactions
ibisPaint X
Sketchbook (notes: formerly known as "Autodesk Sketchbook". PC and Mac versions do exist, but you have to pay to download them)
Medibang Paint
Capcut (note: has optional AI tools).
Be sure to check what system requirements are necessary for each program, and be aware of their limitations before downloading (for example, many users report Clipchamp has a tendency to crash, while others seem to be able to use it fine). Also, please feel free to add on to this. I know I haven't even scratched the surface here, as I tried to stick to software that I've either heard of extensively or have used personally.
#one thing I want to make clear just in case it wasn't already:#I am anti-AI as well#artificial intelligence should not be used to replace human creativity and jobs#I included whether or not a program has AI features in case you'd rather avoid software that uses that type of technology#regardless of if it's optional#also I know that Flipaclip is also a free program#but I purposefully excluded it due to how bogged down with microtransactions it has allegedly become since I last used it#the app Paper is also free#but it makes you pay for brush sizes#so that was a no-go#artists on tumblr#art tips#art advice#art resources#art programs#firealpaca#audacity#Opal speaks#may God bless you all

It's been a while since a new pixel art editor joined the top ranks. Aseprite is the current go-to recommendation for desktops, while Pixaki (now in its 4th iteration) has always been my favorite on the iPad.
It's time to add another worthy alternative for the owners of Apple Pencils, Pixquare, which is probably the closest you will get to Aseprite on iPadOS. Son Nguyen, the app's developer, says he was inspired a lot by Aseprite, both for the UI and functionality. This is perhaps the most evident in the layer/animation system with the cel grid and of course support for importing and exporting .aseprite files.
I reviewed the app on my latest Twitch stream and it's not (yet) as polished as Pixaki (just one example: pixel grid rendering is not pixel-perfect), but it had all the tools that I needed and more. Among unique capabilities are pressure sensitivity (great for more expressive pixel painting) and importing of Lospec color palettes (on the other hand, you can't yet import palette files).
The biggest switching reason for me is the ability to export a timelapse (which I would say is an expected feature of iPad drawing apps at this point—thanks, Procreate!). For those of us who double as artists and content creators, being able to post a timelapse is very useful. This has been on the feature request list of Pixaki at least since 2021, so it's been refreshing to see Son just go ahead and do it based on the beta test feedback. Going forward, now that v1 is fully released in the App Store ($10, or free Lite version that is limited to 2 files) he wants to continue developing the app based on user feedback, so also join his Discord if you decide to give it a chance.
One more timely thing, you have until the end of July to create an artwork in Pixquare (paid or Lite) to get a chance at winning $200 or $100 (plus app codes to share with your friends). Full details on participating in the contest are on Twitter.

Digital artists who only use a few brushes for their fully rendered artwork scare me. Wdym you don’t have several gigabytes of brushes that you barely use. What do you mean you use the same five brushes for everything. What do you mean there is such a thing as enough brushes??? You’re obviously wrong, there is never such thing as enough brushes.
#clip studio paint’s asset store is probably the greatest feature of any art software to ever exist#unless some other softwares have something similar. in which the same thing applies#I’m pretty sure I have at least 15 gb worth of procreate brushes too#I have no way of counting but i wouldn’t be surprised if it was over 1000 brushes#not including those that I installed but never imported#if anyone wants some resources please let me know I don’t think i’ve found all of them but probably found most of them#my posts#og post#thoughts for the void#procreate#clip studio paint#digital art

Did my computer just delete Microsoft Excel?
Word is still here, but suddenly my computer doesn't know how to open xlsx files, their icon has changed, Excel is no longer pinned to my taskbar, and the start menu can't find it anymore. Can't find the Office Suite by looking through my drives, either.
I was using it last night? What just happened?
#do NOT want to reinstall because newer versions have features I don't like#this might be time to get a free alternative#but people don't seem to have optimized free spreadsheet software#as much as writing software#anyone know of a good desktop alternative?#or why it just disappeared without warning?
