Binary: How much does your character use the internet? Do they have a favorite meme?

Moderately? Not nearly as much as some people, but. I mean, I have an account here, I have a discord account, I keep up with my emails and the news. That's about it really.

Ahh... I don't think I have a particular favorite? Here's a topical one though:

Police Lights: What event has most impacted your character's work life?

Getting hired, ha! Being chosen. In all honesty, I didn't have much in the way of prospects before the Buzzing happened and set everything off.

Since actually getting the job... Tokyo, I guess. The Orochi Group and getting entangled in Samael and Lilith's mess. My first run-in with Lilith in Romania was a notable mark on my record. As my boss put it: I'm not afraid of god, but I am afraid of my superiors, and they're afraid of Lilith. Coming into direct contact with her and coming out more or less intact is impressive.

So they had me try it a second time. Ha...

Things happened. Other, more powerful people got involved. I held my own pretty well in an 8-on-1 fight with some other Bees...!

Lilith was taken by angels because I helped open the door. It. Wasn't entirely undeserved - her atrocities are painted across the Ages - but her partner, Samael, was understandably furious. He's promised to destroy me in every way he can imagine as someone who predates humanity, haha...! Starting with publicly accusing me of involvement with a terrorist attack in Tokyo a couple years prior.

A bounty was put out for me. I had to relocate to somewhere I couldn't be as easily tracked and I couldn't be risked going out on field assignments. If my boss hadn't bullshit her way into convincing her superiors that I should be kept on to at least maintain the archive on Solomon and help with some of her more bureaucratic work, I probably would have been fired immediately. If they didn't turn me over to Samael outright, ha...

Things are quieter now. I did a favor of sorts for Samael and he's eased off the pressure. I think he's more focused on trying to get Lilith back than anything else right now. And I got a new place to live, with a community I like and work that keeps me busy between assignments. So things worked out!

And I got very lucky that they did.

6 - Is there a correlation between the muses you like to pick up? Something in particular that draws you to a character and makes you want to write them? 

You  know,  when  I  think  about  it,  yeah  there  is  a  correlation  with  the  muses  I  tend  to  pick  up. Even  looking  at  who  I  was  able  to  add  to  my  roster, I  noticed  that  the  muses I  tend  to  pick  up  usually  have  a  very  calm /  level  headed  front,  or  they  are  goofy  &&  rather  dorky. Most  of  my  muses  I  have  picked  up  are  usually  a  character  I  either,  find  comfort  in  or  I  find  myself  relating  to  them  in  some  way.  

What  initially  draws  me  to  a  character  that  makes  me  want  to  write  them  is,  well,  it  varies  honestly.  For  example,  Orochi  is  a  muse  I  picked   up  because  he’s  such  an  intriguing  character,  we  don’t  have  much  in  common,  but  that’s  what  drew  me  to  him...along  with  his  overall  aesthetic.  &&  then  I  have muses  I  was  drawn  to  because  I  saw  a  lot  of  myself  in  them.  Demyx,  Tesla,  Vincent,  &&  Solomon  ( he’s  not  on  the  roster  here  yet,  but  I  am  moving  him  here  from  his  separate  blog )  are  good  examples  of  that.

It feels like Typemoon wiki made an oversight in Tsumugari Muramasa page. Does it suffer from the drawback of being a recreation of a divine sword? It's not the first time we saw a divine construct used. The first time was when Merlin tricked Quetzalcoatl into throwing Marduk's axe and that one couldn't be carried by anyone lacking Divinity. Shimabara hell Reality Marble cut off normal world's restraint and immediate punishment/correction. UBW Reality Marble allowed a theorical conclusion of a lifetime journey to be realized. That conclusion is something imitates a work of the divine. We haven't seen a divine construct considered a failure yet. I surmise that is because divine constructs don't go through the trial and error process like the ones humankind makes. Those are created by the gods, the planet, etc and at base it is an ideal, a conception given forms. Creations of humankind at first glance seem to be the seems but they are tools to achieve the effect of an ideal/conception on the world. A conclusion of a lifetime is different than something exist from the beginning given form. Tsumugari Muramasa was able to cut through Shimabara and Onriedo because of the conceptual weakness to Muramasa blade. Rather than his body unable to bear the cost of wielding a divine sword, Muramasa 'die' in a similar way to how Musashi dies. She died as fate decreed because there is nothing left for her as a human to do after achieving her lifetime's pursuit of Void. Muramasa died because once he achieved the theoretical conclusion of his life's ambition, it's completed. A bit like how Solomon disappeared from the Throne.

Muramasa's sword wasn't able to cut through resentment, only the Reality Marble and the castle. Avenger Amakusa was killed by Fuuma Kotarou, not Muramasa. The blade Muramasa forged presumably reached the destructive power on par with a divine construct but it couldn't survive outside UBW and it didn't manage to kill either Amakusa or his resentment. Muramasa couldn't cut his fate of being destroyed for using the sword. He couldn't cut his fate of having his life end just as his legend concluded in forging the ultimate sword. I strongly suspect he has backup from Orochi to achieve this feat. First those bunrei of Orochi running around then Shuten daughter of Orochi and Chiyome the one bearing Orochi's curse. He was able to 'pull out' the Tsumugari because Orochi had manifested there in the Singularity. Muramasa is but one piece of the World's defensive mechanism against Amakusa. Perhaps it was even Orochi that summoned Muramasa. He managed to reverse the process to create an imitation of Tsumugari which at this point I strongly argue isn't a legitimate creation of Muramasa. He committed suicide basically, the end of his chant was 'my whole life was for this-'. It was a necessary trade, a barter for a sword with his 'whole life' as a price. He could get summoned again to forge that sword he dreams of. He could be unable to be summoned again as he traded away his 'life' or an 'if' possible conclusion. It depends on Nasu now.

The most he could do as a Servant is to use and forge demonic sword for him and others to use. Handling divine things with a non divine body means the latter bears all the brunt and backlash after all.

KNOWN ASSOCIATES: On good terms with pretty much everyone regardless of faction, though she’s so new to the Secret World and its circles that she’s yet to actually become close associates or friends with anyone.

KNOWN ANIMOSITIES: Again, due to her newness, she’s yet to really make any enemies. That said, she regards the Orochi with a generally suspicious and stand-offish stance– preferring to be utterly, unfailingly polite to Orochi associates while keeping them at arm’s length. She’s also not fond of people who consort with spirits and other supernatural entities in ways she deems foolhardy or inappropriate, ie entering into pacts, freeing bound entities without prudent research, and the like.

EARLY LIFE: Born to a long line of Salem’s descendants, Ashford grew up with magic in her household and as part of her daily learning even from a young age. Born in St. Louis, Missouri and having spent her time traveling all over the midwest with her family, she learned her craft along with a healthy dose of respect for keeping things under wraps as much as possible. Frequent moves and the inability to bring other children to her home due to the family’s magical nature kept her from developing any particularly strong friendships, a trait she has seemingly carried into adulthood.

POWERS: A self-proclaimed witch, Ashford hosts the standard smattering of powers that seem to accompany true witchcraft– limited control over the elements and objects, knowledge of herbs and poultices, and other general lore. Her area of expertise seems to be centered on dealing with “the other side;” she is adept at speaking to and interacting with spirits, both of the deceased and more otherworldly entities. This skill seems to translate to a wide array of abilities, from a gift for convincing lost or lingering spirits to move on, to binding or even destroying more malevolent inhuman beings. 

CURRENT REMIT: At this time, Ashford is venturing through Solomon Island in an effort to hone her abilities in dealing with spirits while also gaining more experience in dealing with problems that must be addressed with a more “hands on” approach, like the undead.

EXTRACURRICULARS: N/A

ACTIVITIES IN THE SECRET WAR: Ashford has shown no interest or activity in the Secret War. In fact, she seems to go out of her way to be friendly to everyone regardless of faction.

MICE: Ashford could likely be easily recruited away from the Templars should push come to shove. She joined them by her own choice, but really only seemed to do so because she claimed to a dislike for the Illuminati’s corporatist practices and a lack of understanding regarding the Dragon’s methods or goals.  Ultimately, this agent would recommend that should one seek to whisk Ashford away for another faction, the best way would be to try to get close to her personally. A lifetime lacking in strong friendships leaves her vulnerable to such an approach due to a certain desire for closeness. She flirts easily and often with men, though at the first indication of reciprocated interest she tends to play her actions off as if she was joking. Sex and romance– or the illusion thereof– could serve as tempting bait. The only other obvious choice that this agent sees regarding attempting to change her loyalties would be to convince her that she is in a level of danger that the Templars simply cannot or will not protect her from. As she is not an immortal, and as her family line exists because her ancestors were the people smart enough to get the hell out of Salem and take their practices with them, it seems to me that Ashford is a consummate survivor and would value self-preservation, to put it kindly. To put it unkindly: she’s something of a coward, and could be manipulated because of it.

Maybe we’ll know more if they continue the storyline after Tokyo. But is that what your oc is after? Power for the sake of it or is there another reason?

From what she’s seen so far of the “secret world”, with Orochi and their experiments with the Filth (because taking a horrible thing and making it even more horrible by intentionally infecting people over and over and over again even though you know it’s going to have the same outcome is always a good idea). She just wants it to end. After Solomon Island, after Egypt, she feels like she just running in place, going from one horrible thing to the next with no rest and she just wants it to be over and done with.

Get rid of the Filth, make Orochi be held accountable to what they’ve done for the sake of “science”. If she has to give up her humanity to do that, so be it, that’s the price she’ll pay.

The Secret World Companions

I’ve been playing Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect: Andromeda, and these two games inspired this post. 

There’s a lot that I wish was in the game The Secret World, but companions are one of the major features that I miss. So this got me thinking: what would companions be like in The Secret World? To investigate this, I’ve made a list of companion candidates from preexisting characters.

Warning! Spoilers for The Secret World through Tokyo!

I had a few criteria for choosing companion candidates. They weren’t absolutes -- you’ll see that there are exemptions in my list -- but they were good rules of thumb.

The first was that they couldn’t be so tied to a particular group that they couldn’t leave to adventure with you. This ruled out Zaha and Mihas of the Drăculeşti, since I reasoned that they were too involved in their responsibilities to their community to want to go demon-hunting with me in Tokyo. 

The second was that they needed to be able to hold their own in a fight. However much I thought that Alina Florea or Dusko Biukovic would have made interesting companions, they probably wouldn’t have been able to face down werewolves and survive unscathed. It’s never fun when you spend a fight desperately trying to heal your companion.

The third was that they needed to be human, or at least human-passing, so that I could take them around London and New York without causing mass panic. This ruled out Traian, Hasdatean, Amir, and Saïd, to name a few.

With these rules in mind, here’s my proposed list of candidates.

New England

Ann Radcliffe | Recruiting Mission: Black Helicopters

Ann Radcliffe had her doubts about the Orochi Group. She was the one who tipped you off to nefarious goings-on at the airport, and she was the one who admitted that she was worried that the Orochi Group was not working towards the greater good. Your findings in Black Helicopters could permanently disillusion her, leading her to leave Orochi and join you instead. Ann is Orochi-trained, so presumably at least passable with a gun and capable of holding her own. Since you would recruit her early on, there’s plenty of time for her to get better. Also, even though everyone in Kingsmouth is infected with the Filth via the Fog, Ann could be a relative newcomer, meaning that she could possibly avoid infection. Or, Ann could be infected and have a character arc struggling to find a cure. There are a few ways the writers could handle this.

I think that it would be very interesting, given the importance of the Orochi through the game all the way up to Tokyo, to have an ex-Orochi agent accompany you. Imagine taking Ann to the Nursery or to the Orochi Tower, and witnessing all that the Orochi have done. It could motivate her to be a potent force against evil.

Romance Bonus: Ann is cute and a romance with her would be adorable.

John Wolfe | Recruiting Mission: The Black House

Arguably one of the most capable characters in New England, John saves your ass during Dawning of an Endless Night and works with you for several missions afterwards, making him becoming a companion a natural evolution of your relationship. His powers could have insulated him against the Filth infection. Learning the truth behind Carrie Killian’s death in The Black House could motivate him to leave the Savage Coast behind, or it could be simply that there isn’t much to do once you’ve taken care of a few quests. I think that, given his interest in the history and people of Solomon Island, taking him to defeat Beaumont would be a powerful moment. 

Romance Bonus: John is a very handsome man and I think that a romance with him would be interesting. 

Carter | Recruiting Mission: Carter Unleashed

I always thought that Carter was somewhat wasted in Innsmouth Academy, given her powers and the several callbacks she receives throughout the story. Her links to the Illuminati and the Orochi Group would make bringing her along as a companion an interesting story, I think, and her inexperience and youth could balance out her powers. She could have a character arc based around learning to control her abilities and reaching out to help other people who struggle with theirs. She and the player character have a certain amount to commiserate over: after all, you’ve wrecked your room in a fit of magic gone amok as well. As with John, Carter’s powers and relative isolation within Innsmouth Academy could have shielded her from the Filth infection of the Fog. The events of Carter Unleashed could have both inspired Carter to get better control of her powers through careful use and set you up as a mentor to her; having her accompany you as a companion isn’t that far a stretch from there.

Important Note: Carter is too young to romance, so as a companion she would not have a romance arc. Perhaps it could be replaced with a coming-of-age arc, or extra material; there are ways that the writers could handle this.

Egypt

Nassir | Recruiting Mission: The Last Train To Cairo

Egypt was hard to find companions for, but I think that Nassir is a good candidate. Your defeat of the Atenists in both the story and Issue 6 could have freed up Nassir to accompany you elsewhere. The guy seems prone to wanderlust and activity, and it doesn’t seem like a stretch to imagine him leaving Egypt with you to help out other people similarly beset by evils. His training with the Marya gives him a certain competence in the field, and his demolition skills could be a fun twist to the gameplay. 

Romance Bonus: Come on, who doesn’t want to romance Nassir? I bet he has some great moves. 

Transylvania

Sophie | Recruiting Mission: Death And Axes

Sophie is another stretch, but I think she could be very interesting. A half-human half-faerie hybrid, Sophie could become aware of her inhuman heritage and be prompted by the Forest God to explore it further. The intense emotions of losing both her parents in Death And Axes could have awakened some fae powers of hers, and with some additional training from the Forest God she could be a stand-out companion. She shares a sense of innocence and youth with Carter, mentioned earlier. Sophie could leave her inn with you, saying goodbye to the Forest God, and set out to see the world.

Romance Bonus: After breaking up with the Forest God, Sophie could be an adorable significant other.

Aurélie and Céline | Recruiting Mission: The Girls Who Cried Wolf

Have you seen Céline’s skills with a chainsaw? Aurélie is good with a rifle, too. They could be eager to leave the Mill, ready to join up to hack even more werewolves to pieces and shoot some vampires in the face. Also, Céline could want to investigate Laurent’s death and his connections to the Morninglight further.  

Romance Bonus: Someone pointed out that Céline has eyes only for Aurélie, so these two may be off the table. But it could be sweet watching their relationship with each other unfold.

Zsolt Blaga | Recruiting Mission: The Amazing Brothers Blaga

I mentioned that Zaha and Mihas were probably too important to the  Drăculeşti, but what about Mihas’s brother Zsolt? The death of his brother Andrash could spur Zsolt to leave the Drăculeşti to both work through his grief and to make sure that nothing like that ever happens to anyone else. Zsolt, if Mihas is to be believed, can hold his own in The Secret World, and training with you would only make him better. 

Romance Bonus: Hey, he’s the one who wanted to know if you were single.

Dragan Dzoavich | Recruiting Mission: You Only Die Twice

Another Orochi operative, Dragan is stranded and alone with the rest of his team either dead or missing. His devotion to Emma could motivate him to leave his post and work with you to protect her, especially after learning that Emma is Gaia’s daughter Anima. A particularly lethal man, Dragan could be a valuable ally against Filthy forces. 

Romance Bonus: Dragan doesn’t strike me as a person who has ever been particularly close to anyone. You could be the first, and that could take the story to some interesting places. 

Tokyo

Ricky Pagan | Recruiting Mission: The Chrome Steed

Tokyo was difficult to think of companions for, and the only one who really stood out to me was Ricky Pagan. Bombastic and committed, Ricky could leave his park to adventure with you to help keep other areas touched by Gaia safe and sound, and to avenge his fallen friends. Ricky doesn’t stand out as particularly combat-trained, but by this time you would have amassed a pretty good group of companions, and between them all Ricky could probably get up to snuff in no time. 

Romance Bonus: He’s Ricky Pagan.

We meet up with the Orochi Group and are told that the Draug may have arrived at Solomon Island via a container ship named The Polaris. The Orochi has offered to drop us off in the area via helicopter. We sort out the Draug for them, and we get to keep the sweet, sweet loots.
