Jewel lore time!!! Buckle in. Jewel's curse is manifested by evil, hatred, and fear. He's around an evil presence, gets extremely angry or scared, you get the jist. Jewel absolutely despies and fears this curse, but that has also extended to himself. For the first few months of his life (he has amnesia), the curse would take control of him. He was essentially unconscious while the curse used his body. Innocent people got murdered by him because of this. The first ones were Amy, Sticks, and Shadow. This really took a toll on Jewel. He was still learning about the world, and his introduction being murdering people messed him up hard. He tried suppressing his trauma, but that made his mental state worse. Even after finally taking control of his curse and finding a use for it, he still resents it. He's afraid of losing control and hurting his friends. It's also caused Jewel to develop control freak tendencies. The reason he's so bratty and defiant is because of his trauma. He doesn't want anything controlling him. He knows it's wrong to lash out at and disobey others, but that looming fear of no control hovers over him.
