Wraithbinder lets you delve deeper with co-op

Wraithbinder action roguelite RPG game has a new beta for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. All of this is possible thanks to the hard work and sheer brilliance of Wizard Fu. Plus a new new beta phase coming to Steam. Double Eleven, the publishing company that supports digital masterpieces, has announced that it's teaming up again with Wizard Fu, the one-man game studio. If you remember the intense sci-fi adventure Songbringer in 2017, well, it's the same developer. Together, they're working on a thrilling action-packed escapade, Wraithbinder. This also take place in the same universe as Songbringer. From July 14 to 25, there's something extra happening. Wraithbinder is entering a new testing phase on Linux. So you and friends can try the action roguelite RPG with the new online co-op mode. To invite a friend, make sure you both click Request Access on Steam. Wraithbinder takes inspiration from Metroidvania - it's all about levelling up your character by gaining new abilities. Since each adventure you undertake is in a world that's uniquely generated every single time. Also, as you explore, you pick various weapons - gear for that close-quarters combat, long-range attacks, you name it. Along with special powers and relics that make you stronger to better take on enemies. As you become more powerful, you also unlock inaccessible places.

Songbringer

Songbringer is a procedurally generated action RPG with a strong influence from the Legend of Zelda. The graphical style immediately makes me think of Hyper Light Difter and Narita Boy. I have yet to get my hands on it yet but looks like a great adventure to undertake. I question the generative aspects of the game if it is so heavily getting compared to Zelda. I fear that it may appear to loose or wiley in its controls given its not fully formed and specifically constructed. But regardless it looks great and I gotta check it out. Songbringer is available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Review: Songbringer

If Wizard Fu set out to make the most faithful of homages to the original Legend of Zelda specifically, Songbringer fits the bill with its hands-off approach to exploration-driven adventure. Unfortunately what the game initially builds up with its environments and keen visual style is partially swept aside by some unruly technical aspects and the frustration of its simplistic, button-mashing combat that ultimately come to define a player’s all-around experience.

I first came across the action RPG Year In The Trees when I moved to Sweden and heard about Stugan, an incubator program that ran here from 2015–2018. For two months over the summer, game developers from all over the world would come together to work on their games in a cabin in the middle of Swedish nature. In 2018, Chris ‘Luno’ Smith was one of them—fittingly so, as his RPG is pretty much about living in a cabin in the middle of an enchanted forest.

Luno, started the project back in 2016 and it’s been wonderful to see his high-bit art style get polished over the years into the smoothness it has today. Combined with the music and ambience worthy of his musician background, we get a world that is as mysterious as Wizard Fu’s Songbringer and pleasant as ConcernedApe’s Stardew Valley (coincidentally two other games with solo devs that also did their own soundtracks).

In April we got the above vlog that gave us a closer look at the current state of the game and the kind of crafting/survival gameplay to expect. There are no release plans yet (or Steam pages to wishlist), but you can sign up for a newsletter on the game’s website or follow Luno’s updates on Twitter.

Backstory: The satyrs of the Skola Valley are notorious for their revelries. And none were mofe infamous among the satyrs than the valley's former leader, King Stranger, the God of Revels, Xenagos. Once a mortal, through cunning and pure hedonistic revelry, he ascended to godhood. Among his worshippers, Resa was among the most fervent. A piper by trade, Resa was known for her impulsive tendencies. She took what she wanted, played whatever music she wanted, and used her burgeoning magic as she pleased, all in His great name. Until... The unthinkable.

During a particularly wild party, the devout of Xenagos noticed a lack of his presence. Their collective hearts sunk. The God of Revels was no more, smote by the champion of the Sun. Distraught, Resa joined a group of revellers, letting their rage be known. It was during one of these parties that Resa played a particular song too close to a hydra's lair. And infused it with the magic she used to whip up a ferver. The hydra within, in a rage, attacked the revellers, killing three and mauling Resa. As she lay there bleeding out, she swore she could see... Him. But... How? The question would be left unanswered as she was pulled across the multiverse to the city plane of Ravnica. Not long after arriving, she joined the Gruul Clans, whipping warriors into a frenzy. And loving every second of it.

Magic and Abilities: Resa's a talented musician, skilled enough to make even incorrect notes sound sweet. Her music is the catalyst for her two main magics; floramancy, and a form of emotion magic. This magic allows her to stir anyone she wishes to who can hear her music into a frenzied zeal.

Personality: Resa is an impulsive hedonist, plain and simple. Wherever she goes, she wants to experience all of the pleasures the land may offer. If there's a party, she's there. If there's nothing to enjoy right there, or she just doesn't feel like partying, her more calm, jovial side comes out. This side of her is still looking for a good time, but is a lot calmer about it.

Physical Appearance: Resa stands around 4'7". Her horns come out from the sides of her head and bend towards the front, parting her red hair where they come out. Her goat legs are covered in soft, rust-coloured fur.

Her clothing consists of a brown tunic that covers up just enough to be socially acceptable.
