I was just rewatching parts of the four-parter of Sonic Boom, "Robots From the Sky," originally for the Sonamy content 😂 (since that has some of the biggest evidences for them secretly dating in that show, but that's for another post)

But then I noticed something a little odd.

In the fourth part, Sonic is weirdly...quiet.

I'll just say real quick I'm a big fan of the headcanon that Sonic used to be mute, and is still selectively mute, all depending on the day and the situation and whatnot. I think it adds depth to his character and another side that'd be fascinating to see in canon (and I always latch onto fanworks that portray such). But besides there being the obvious thing about Classic Sonic being completely mute, and Sonic X Sonic being quiet most of the time, and stuff like that, I didn't expect to find anything for it in Boom, of all things.

(to be clear, that wasn't an insulting comment. I adore Boom. It's sorta my comfort show. XD)

ANYWAY, the point of this post! In the fourth and final episode of the miniseries, even though he started out the episode talking as usual, Sonic went weirdly silent starting shortly after the rest of his friends arrived. There was the silly, rather flirtatious scene he had with Amy, they all tried (and failed) to fight, Sonic instructed Tails to take the others and fall back while he went and got the robot guy (I forgot his name). That command he gave Tails was the last real thing he actually said for the next five minutes of the episode (these are ten minute eps remember, so that's more than it sounds, and definitely way more than five minutes happened in the real timespan of the episode). He said a couple things at the very end, but spoke no real words in the conversations and battles (other than yelling "ow" that one time 😂).

Like?? Boom!Sonic isn't necessarily as talkative as Movie!Sonic or Prime!Sonic, but he doesn't often come across as "quiet," either. But...???

Like, several times in that period (which must've been hours, since the robot guy built a bunch of robot duplicates of them during that time) he was the only character who stayed quiet the whole time. He was paying attention to what was happening, but I kept expecting him to contribute or just say SOMETHING, and he just wouldn't. Not even when Tails said something to him. Several times someone gave him some type of instruction and he just nodded, without so much as a hum. He just stood there. His robot duplicate said something a couple times (or maybe just once, idk, but still).

I might be reading too much into it, but the thought was just interesting to me. I was trying to think of why he might've gone silent for that time, in context of the situation, and thought either maybe it was because it was a truly more serious situation, or maybe because he was actually hurt? And his being silent was the only tell that something was off? IDK!! Selective mutism, especially with Sonic, is very interesting to me. 😅

Trip talking to the group for the first time. But she only knows Japanese.

Sonic getting super excited to meet someone who speaks his native language, but being unable to talk to her because his selective mutism won't let him.

So he translates for her by signing. And Tails translates Sonic’s signing into English for everyone who hasn't learned the language yet. But it doesn't work the other way because Trip doesn't know ASL.

And it makes Sonic feel bad. Because if he could just talk to people, he could fully translate for her. But his stupid rebellious vocal chords refuse to work right.

Trip senses Sonic’s frustration. And suddenly there's a hand on his shoulder. Sonic looks up and Trip is smiling at him.

In a way, she understands.

Whisper often goes through periods where she is entirely nonverbal — these can last an hour to a few days, depending on the cause.  These often tend to intersect with the periods where she is most easily overwhelmed or overstimulated, so she’ll often avoid her “bigger” friends like Tangle or Silver — they’re wonderful, but can be a lot in those moments.  (  tangle is working on it, but isn’t offended that she’s not totally there yet.  )

When Whisper in such a state but still wants to be near another person, Sonic tends to be her go - to, as he doesn’t push or overwhelm.  More than once someone has walked in on them sitting in silence, texting each other or passing notes rather than speaking.

NEGA SCOTT HEAD CANONS !!

Ever since I beat him in the game last night, I've become attached to him. He definitely should have gotten more screen/book time. BUT ANYWAYS, I decided to give him some headcanons because I'll definitely be draw him more later ^^

- Longer hair/Mullet

-He lives with Scott and Wallace. He sleeps on the recliner when he wants to.

- He's a selective mute. He makes subtle sound if he wants attention from someone, or shrugs as a response.

- Considering he's the embodiment of Scott's past mistakes, one of them is having a crush on Wallace's during college. Now Nega Scott is more clingy and weirdly obsessed with him.

-Unlike Scott, (who sleeps until 12 pm) Nega Scott rarely sleeps. Wallace is the first person to notice that.

- Nega Scott is very sneaky and quiet, know to be lurking in shadows most of the time, or sneaking up on people and scaring them by accident.

- He is just as strong as he is in the game.

- He follows Scott around behind him, and Scott doesn't care.

- Whenever Scott has a "glow" moment, Nega Scott gets triggered by it and attacks him.

- He has a staring problem

- He has the same mannerisms as Scott and despite his angry looking expression, he can still be awkward.

- He hates Sonic and loves Mario

- He enjoys being around Kim, since she was the only person who stuck around with Scott even during his dumbest moments.

sonic has chronic pain and maybe chronic fatigue, selectively mute (used to be fully mute, but forced himself to talk), has tourette’s, dissociates (did?),

tails has narcolepsy and some type of muscle dystrophy in her legs (she uses her tails, tech, or a wheelchair to move around), perhappies she uses her miles electric to talk due to mutism, is dyslexic

amy is partially blind in color and general vision

shadow is autoimmune, has chronic pain, some sort of disability (maybe cerebral palsy) that makes it a little harder for them to walk (air shoes help), selectively mute, has dissociative identity disorder, etc

knux is hard of hearing

blaze is selectively mute, has chronic pain and fatigue

i have more but can’t think of anything else in specific

👽 A headcanon about a weird quirk of there: Idk if this counts as a weird quirk but I like to imagine he makes a lot of weird faces when he reads, he loves reading so much and imagines the events very vividly.

🦾 A disability headcanon: He has ADHD and is probably autistic as well. I don't think he has an official diagnosis or anything but all his friends are like "Yeah it's pretty obvious". Also, he was selectively mute as a child, and while he talks more as a teenager, he can still occasionally experience speech loss. In those cases he uses sign language, but in some cases he may not be able to communicate in any way at all. Tails is usually ready speak for him if communication is needed, since he knows Sonic the best and can read him pretty well.

🪢 A headcanon about their family: I think his biological family is a mystery to everyone, Sonic included. Maybe he was an orphan, maybe he just got lost, no one knows. But he left his home island when he was very young. Sonic isn't really interested in finding his origins or biological family, he is content with his own found family, especially Tails. I kinda like the headcanon that he has royal origins but I also like the headcanon that he is Just Some Guy Who Showed Up but I also like the headcanon that he is secretly a god or the personification of wind. Maybe I like him being a random guy the best-

😬 A headcanon about the worst thing they’ve done: This is a hard one. I don't think Sonic really regrets anything since he lives in the moment etc. etc. He has probably killed someone but in his mind the worst thing he has ever done is lying to Tails about something jhgkdskdsk

For Sonic & Tails, the Unbreakable Bond

I don't have many headcanons for them, but I'll try my best to answer!

🧸 - (Going off classic Sonic since I'm PRETTY SURE he's past Sonic in the current canon, correct me if I'm wrong, but either way, the headcanon still stands,) Sonic as a child was a selective mute. And for Tails, I think after a while of getting bullied for his two tails, he attempted to keep them together to look like one, or find some way to, maybe then he would look normal and kids would be nicer to him! He never could.

👽- Not really sure here, actually! The only ones I can think of are Sonic never fixing his quills (which is why I tend to draw them with some small quills sticking out.) Either the wind will fix it, or make it messier, and quite frankly, Sonic doesn't care. I got nothing for Tails 😞

😬- Worst thing they've done? Nothing much here either jsvvjhdsfbks I kinda wanna say Sonic would see accidentally hurting Tails in any way (and I mean REALLY accidental, very small, like causing him to trip or stepping on one of his tails or something,) and automatically feel TERRIBLE. And also Tails committing crimes. A fantastic genre in the Sonic fandom.

Yeah. :( Poor boy's Selective Mutism was intense back then. It took a long time for him to find his voice and now all those years of hard work have just been undone. It's not fun.

Thankfully, Tails has always been good at calming Sonic down on the rare occasions he's stressed out of his mind. He can talk Sonic down and remind him gently that he can still talk, just not vocally. Tails isn't mad at Sonic for this. He doesn't love him any less. It's not something to be ashamed of. He can't control it, and that's okay.

Since I still explore the Sonic Lore I find out that Sonic was mute in Sonic the Hedgehog and I thought "What if he was still selectively-mute?" so I made it a headcanon (maybe someone already talked about it)

Sonic going mute at night and having insomnia. He goes out for a walk and end up in the forest. There he just sit down and watch the stars through the trees leaves. Some minutes after, Shadow arrived and just saw Sonic, who noticed Shadow too. The two of them just looked at each other and slowly Shadow come near Sonic.

"Having trouble to sleep?" ask Shadow

"..." Sonic don't answer, he just look at Shadow and nodded.

"Why don't you say anything? It's not like you."

Sonic mimes a cross on his mouth telling Shadow he can't speak.

"Why?"

Sonic shake his head, don't want to explain with sign all the thing.

"Will you tell me about it later?"

Sonic nodded again.

"Right" And Shadow stopped talking.

The two of them just continue to look at the stars silently and peacefully. Some minutes later, Sonic's head fall on Shadow's shoulder, he fell asleep. Shadow smile softly and put his head on Sonic's, falling asleep too.

This is kind of a common headcanon so you must have seen it before but I really like the idea that the reason classic!sonic doesn't speak is because sonic has selective mutism and when he was younger he was completely non-verbal and in present day he still goes mute sometimes and uses sing language

Nah, he can talk. His muteness post-2011 is just a mistaken interpretation forced upon the character.
