A Local Community Celebration takes work

With the warmth and freedom of summer comes the annual celebration of independence, especially the 4th of July. This year for the town of Sonoma, the Fourth of July holds particular significance because it’s the 200th anniversary of the founding of the old Mission, San Francisco de Solano.

Whether people find it worthy of extra efforts of festivity or not is another matter. Yet pretty much everyone agrees that the 4th of July signifies the peak of summer and it’s an excuse to take some vacation time.

As the Sonoma Valley Sun reported.

“We roughly estimate that about 10,000, people visit Sonoma during the 4th of July weekend,” said Bob Norrbom, speaking on behalf of the Sonoma Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Since 2017, the SVFA has been coordinating the annual parade in addition to the fireworks show that lights up the skies above the plaza and surrounding vicinity as the sun sets.

As soon as dusk comes, at about 9:00 PM, the SVFA has everything ready to shoot off a spectacular pyrotechnic display to make for a memorable evening, and the conclusion of a full day of parade, activities, vendors and lots of family and community fun.

“As far back as I can remember, said Sonoma native Golly McGinty the community has always had a 4th of July celebration; fireworks and parade for over 62 years at least,” she exclaimed.

Before the SVFA began coordinating and organizing the parade, the Sonoma Community Center did the work until six years ago.

“The 4th of July event fills all the hotels said Norrbom and Sonoma gets visitors from all over, including places as far away as Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy & Spain.”

Yet, just as the Sonoma Index-Tribune reported back in April of this year, “we struggle financially to ensure that the fireworks show is of good quality,” said Norrbom. He noted that as the SVFA starts early to plan for the annual event, (sometimes just days after the 4th of July is over) “there is often a deficit of anywhere between 20 to 30,000 dollars in debt because costs are high and inflation has an impact.”

On average, the cost of a quality one-hour fireworks display that has the best pyrotechnics, according to Norrbom is about $70,000 dollars.

While the City of Sonoma and the tourism board of Sonoma County are very helpful in waiving fees and providing discounts, the SVFA still must pay CA State permit fees and charges.

Portable toilets, barricades, security, and other necessary things all are costs. And, “These too have increased,” said Norrbom.

The annual fireworks show is coordinated on a portion of land at General Vallejo’s home and estate which is part of the historical park owned/managed by the State of California. This is rented for a fee to the State Parks.

This launching spot which is situated off of Spain Street is an ideal vantage point so that most of Sonoma, especially within the radius of the historic plaza can view the fireworks clearly.

“We took over the responsibility of coordinating the parade from the SCC in an effort to raise funds to help pay for the fireworks show,” said Norrbom. “People and local organizations might complain about paying an entry fee to have their float or a marching band in the parade, but it helps us put on a good show,” said Norrbom.

“And, how can you have a really memorable 4th of July celebration without a fireworks show?” He added.

The SVFA works to help keep fees that vendors and local organizations pay reasonable by seeking the help of sponsors.

“We work throughout the year to obtain grants from foundations and ways to raise money through donations,” said Norrbom. The SVFA is a nonprofit 501, c-3 organization. “All donations are tax-deductible,” he added.

Norrbom is grateful for the sponsorship of Nugget Sonoma Market (among others) and for the help of local officials such as Susan Gorin.

Nugget manager at Sonoma Market Cody Moody confirmed. “Sonoma Market donated $10,000.00 this year to the fireworks display and some tri-trip steaks to the firefighters for their barbecue”

“Everyone must understand that in order for us to ensure everything goes smoothly and that as many people as possible can enjoy a safe and wonderful celebration, we need help,” said Norrbom.

One of my first realizations was that this was more of a California wine problem. In France there is no disdain for this grape. In fact you will find Chardonnay planted and celebrated throughout the entire country, reaching its highest heights in Champagne and Burgundy--two revered communes that set the bar for the rest of wine growing world. Chardonnay growing under a Mediterranean sun in California vineyards seems to produce wines that are a lot more polarizing. So the question is: why do so many of the best wineries in Healdsburg focus on California Chardonnay? The short answer is: Chardonnay is still King! There are really two camps. There is the camp that likes the big, buttery, oaky, cocktail Chardonnays for which the variety in California wine became famous. And there is the other camp that likes acid-driven, mineral-drenched, lemon-stone white wines that happen to be made from Chardonnay grapes. LIOCO Wine Company obviously wanted to champion the latter style, and we have spent the last 17 years changing people's minds about what Chardonnay could be. We like to say "...that Chardonnay went through a Fat Elvis phase here." It put on weight in all the wrong places, got a little sloppy, and kind of lost touch with its essence. LIOCO has always championed the 1950s Rockabilly Elvis. That taught, svelte crooner that mades the ladies weak in the knees. The malleability of this grape means both styles can be readily achieved in California wine. However, in our humble opinion, the truly great versions of Chardonnay are coming from select California vineyards that provide interesting soils and cooler temperature gradients (ie. like LIOCO's Tidal Break Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, grown 4 miles from ocean on blue volcanic soil). Other factors that tend to produce truly great Chardonnay are older vines which deliver a more soil-driven and less-fruity expression (ie. like LIOCO's Chuy Vineyard, Sonoma Valley Chardonnay, planted in 1963) and/or vineyards that are not irrigated a.k.a. dry farmed (ie. like LIOCO's Casa Seca Vineyard, RRV Chardonnay, farmed without any water!). These qualities in the vineyard produce smaller grape clusters and more concentrated juice. At this point, all we have to do is pick the fruit on the earlier side (to preserve the snappy acidic crunch we love) and demonstrate some restraint in the cellar (no new oak!). The rest has already been provided by the vineyard. When Chardonnay is done right in California, there are few equals in the world. California wine at its Apex!

Charmian London, a remarkable woman few people really knew.

When taking a walk around the grounds at Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen it’s easy to be awestruck by the natural beauty of what was once the famous author’s home. Yet what few people know is that behind London and his vision was his 2nd wife, Charmian Kittredge London.

“She was instrumental not only in ensuring his legacy but also in helping and contributing to his writing,” said poet/historian Iris Jamal Dunkle.

Dunkle’s recent book, ‘Charmian Kittredge London, Trailblazer, Author, Adventurer’ speaks of a woman who was a part of her times and yet ahead of her times.

Dunkle’s work inspired the officials and staff at JLSP to shift the spotlight from exclusively Jack London to highlight Charmian as one of the 20th Century’s most under-appreciated women of significant influence and accomplishment.

As noted when she spoke recently with The Sonoma Valley Sun. “I had never even met a writer until the day I walked into the museum at the House of Happy Walls at Jack London State Historic Park, back in the sixth grade.”

“Suddenly, walking through the exhibits, said Dunkle, I saw how one could spend a life traveling the world and writing about it.”

I fell instantly in love with Jack London and vowed to read everything he had ever written,” said Dunkle.

Dunkle was impressed by London’s insightful writing and his way of capturing the essence of people and perspectives.

Yet it was when Dunkle came upon a collection called, ‘Our Valley of the Moon in poems and pictures,’ which included an iconic photograph of Jack London riding on horseback on Sonoma Mountain. “And to my surprise, beneath it was a clear attribution, said Dunkle. “Charmian London.”

Intrigued, Dunkle had a quest set before her. “When I reached out to several scholars to see if they knew Charmian had been the photographer, each of them gave me the same answer: they had never even thought to ask who had taken this famous photograph!” Exclaimed Dunkle.

In her six-year endeavor of research for the nearly-300 page biography, Dunkle was both surprised and dismayed at what she uncovered.

“From far away, London was an individual genius writer. But up close, in the extensive research I did says Dunkle, the ugly truth, the brushstrokes, that made that illusion so beautiful from afar are fully visible.”

“Each adventure London sought and experienced, said Dunkle, each book he wrote was aided by another force of nature: his second wife, Charmian Kittredge London.”

Charmian Kittredge was unique among the women of her time in that she was college educated. “Not a finishing school or a ladies seminary,” said Dunkle but a progressive college for women, Mills College in Oakland,” added Dunkle.

Despite the fact that Charmian lost her mother when she was little, her father insisted she be educated and have skills. Learning stenography, (shorthand) Charmian worked her way through school in the Mills College administration offices. “She became extremely efficient and invaluable,” said Dunkle.

The most upsetting aspect to Dunkle’s lengthy research was the fact that “Charmian was maligned by London scholars and biographers like Irving Stone who painted Charmian as someone who was an overbearing disruption than a helper,” said Dunkle.

Yet what Dunkle uncovered was a remarkable woman who traveled the world, had a high-paying job. “Charmian worked at the largest shipping firm in San Francisco before she met Jack in 1900 and started dating him in 1902,” said Dunkle.

Illuminating important disregarded if not overlooked facts, Dunkle said. “Charmian began her own writing career in the 1890s publishing non-fiction essays in Sunset magazine and The Overland Monthly.”

“One of my most important discoveries, added Dunkle, however, was that Charmian was not just Jack’s secretary (as had been previously assumed). Charmian helped write several of Jack’s books and acted as his editor beginning with his novel,’The Sea-Wolf.’”

With this revelation, Dunkle became undaunted even when resources at Huntington Library in San Marino, CA was missing important bits and pieces.

Referring to her exhaustive research as “clandestine,”

Dunkle surmised. “After being granted such access, Irving Stone’s betrayal with his unfair biased view in the biography he wrote about Jack London, Charmian became more guarded. Most likely, Charmian burned letters, documents, etc.”

Pointing out how much harm is done when facts are distorted or dismembered, “Charmian more than deserves to be honored,” said Dunkle.

“Charmian refused to adhere to the gender norms of her day,” said Dunkle. “She was an avid horseback rider who thought riding side-saddle absurd.” “Charmian was an equal to Jack, (they were definitely soul-mates) unafraid, athletic and adventurous,” added Dunkle.

Volunteers at Jack London State Historic Park like Mary Oswald are pleased with the new focus on Charmian. “As the old saying goes, behind every great man there’s a woman.”

“I agree,” said Sonoma resident Jude Cameron, who stopped in at the exhibit. “Perhaps in this situation with Jack and Charmian, it was more about a woman beside him as an equal.”

San Francisco to Seattle

I thought it might be good to provide a summary of my recent 20-day ride from San Francisco to Seattle. Each day resulted in its own entry (linked below), but I wanted to provide a broader overview. (LINK: post about gear and bike setup).

My route covered 1187 miles over 20 days (I-5, by car, is 820 miles). I averaged 62 miles per day, not counting my rest day (daily miles ranged from 32 to 88). I chose to take an inland route, in part because the roads were less trafficked and in part because I have a fondness of the wide open spaces of the interior. If I had been riding north to south, I might have opted for the coast, but there was no way I was going to add persistent northerly headwinds to an already very hilly and heavily trafficked (but very scenic) route.

The following is a link to the entire route in RideWithGPS. Note that this is a close approximation of the route, but not necessarily exact. The day-by-day posts above link to the actual ride data, which show enough detail to capture wrong turns, side trips, and exactly where I stopped for food, camped, or pulled off for a view.

My steepest climbs were Ida Clayton Road in Sonoma County on the second day and Bartlett Springs Road east of Clear Lake on the third. My longest climb was on the western slope of the northern Sierras, which rose from near sea level to over 6500'. Day 5, from Browns Valley to La Porte, resulted in a total climb of almost 8800’, the most I’ve ever done in a day. Other notable, but easier climbs included Moonlight Pass north of Taylorsville (Day 7), the climb to Crater Lake (Day 11), and the ascent of Santiam Pass (Day 14). The highest point on the ride was 7600’ along the west rim of Crater Lake (Day 12). I crisscrossed the Pacific Crest Trail numerous times in CA and OR.

Geologically, this was a very volcanic route. Lots of lava. Lots of cones and craters and calderas. I saw Sutter Buttes, Lassen, Shasta, Medicine Lake (Lava Beds), McLaughlin, Mazama (Crater Lake), Thielsen, Diamond Peak, Newberry (Paulina Peak), Bachelor, The Sisters, Washington, Jefferson, Hood, Adams, St Helens, and Rainier. Some were closer than others, but they were all around me.

While there were some great (rough, difficult, but sometimes wonderful) gravel segments, a vast majority of the ride was on pavement. The most memorable gravel was on Bartlett Springs Road and on Moonlight Valley/Old Town Road between Taylorsville and Westwood. The Deschutes River Trail was a great dirt ride, mainly easy single track, but made me glad I was riding a gravel bike with a bike packing setup and not my touring bike with panniers. The Ida Clayton Road north of Santa Rosa and Hill Road east Lava Beds National Monument were paved, but badly, and should probably count as gravel!

I stayed in motels when I could and camped when I needed to. Motels are often generic and uninteresting (not always) and expensive, but they have running water and hot showers, outlets for charging, a place to wash out and dry clothing, and are much warmer when you get up in the morning. They are usually near stores and restaurants and usually have WiFi and cell service (not always). Camping is more rewarding and more immersive. Cold nights. Full moons. Misty lakes. Wildlife. Noisy birds. There were a couple of regular campgrounds and a bunch of wild camps or primitive sites that were nearly wild.

Highlights are always tough (and often the highlights of bike trip are moments not spent on the bike). The Golden Gate Bridge. Dinner with M on her birthday along the Petaluma River. Dropping down the Leesville Grade. Indian Valley and Young's Market in Taylorsville. The view of Lassen and Shasta over the Hat Creek Valley. The patio at the Fall River Hotel. Crater Lake. Riding into Bend along the Deschutes River Trail. The morning mist on Lost Lake west of Santiam Pass. Coffee at Dragonfly and breakfast at Besaw on my rest day in Portland.

And then there are the people and the conversations. The volunteers at the randoneuring check point in Quincy. Scott and Barb and Les in Fall River. Tom at Lava Beds. The guy in the coffee shop in Klamath Falls. The family at Crater Lake. Another family at the coffee shop in Sisters. Many others.

Ultimately, what impacts me the most is the notion of riding alone through a vast landscape. The surroundings change slowly because you are moving slowly. But they do change, and rarely do you go half a day without finding yourself in a very different kind of place. Over almost three weeks there are mountains and desert and lava and forest and city and ocean. The remoteness and the solitude is both a compelling attraction and a big source of stress. It’s wonderful, scary, and a little overwhelming, which is probably why it is so powerful emotionally. I enjoy the challenge, the anticipation, and doing something that's a little more difficult in a life that's otherwise remarkably easy. Of course, when I'm doing it, I often wish I was home, going out for the routine coffee, sitting in the back yard, and puttering around the house.

There are always what-ifs. I discovered and fixed a loose derailleur on the second day before something disastrous happened. I had no flats or other mechanical problems, other than constant issues with a drive chain desperately in need of a cleaning. If it had been colder AND wetter, things might have gotten unpleasant, but as it was, weather was pretty ideal most of the time. If my periodic toothache or my sore peroneal tendon had gotten worse, there might have been a reckoning. I was passed by thousands of cars and trucks, but if they were texting or on their fifth beer, I didn’t notice (but I did think about it). Hypothermia and dehydration should always be concerns, but I brought proper gear and planned my route carefully and flexibly, making those outcomes highly unlikely. Ultimately, I suspect the most dangerous aspect of this kind of ride is my own inattention. It’s hitting something, catching the edge of pavement, or sliding in loose gravel, and taking a bad spill.

COVID impacted the trip in the same way it affects our broader lives these days. Rules, attitudes, and adherence varied from place to place and not always in the patterns you might expect - but that's true about a lot of things when traveling. The biggest issue was that places I normally rely on weren't always available - from fast food dining rooms to bathrooms. It was harder to get out of the sun, refill water bottles, charge batteries, or find WiFi.
