Once again didn't really feel like colouring properly but tada anyways! Shadow, AKA Terios Acorn, the Ultimate Dad (bod) with his kids Sonya, Manik and baby Jasper (who finally has a name)! Estelle is not there mostly coz I haven't fully nailed her design yet...

After being forced into retirement from superhero work Shadow, Sonic and Sally had to make quite a lot of lifestyle changes. Shadow, and Sonic to a lesser extent, noticeably gained a bit of weight over the years as a result.

Has been mentioned before but Shadow doesn't actually need to eat as often, but nowadays he does so to appear more normal. He also tends to feel left out when the others are eating together and he's not. This has been the main reason for his weight gain. He would actually make himself sick a lot in the early years after retirement coz he was eating too much. These days Sonic serves him smaller portions or just gives him something to nibble on instead so he feels included.

Both Shadow and Sonic have high metabolisms due to the amounts of energy they burn off. Where Shadow could survive off of ambient Chaos Energy, Sonic had to eat a lot more just to keep up. Being unable to use his speed to burn off that excess energy has kinda thrown his whole diet out of whack.

Sally regularly goes to the gym, but mostly only as part of long term PT exercises she has to do coz of her cybernetics. At first the boys attempted to join her in a bid to get rid of some of that excess energy but they both had great difficulty holding back and trying to appear "normal". They also weren't really getting anything out of it because they were forced to hold back too.

Sonic is jealous of they way Sally bounced back after her pregnancies, while he's still got that soft pudginess in his chest, belly and hips. He's a little bit self-conscious of his weight since he used to be lithe and small, built for speed. And the fact that he was bullied a bit as a kid or being "fat" too. Shadow and Sally very much love how cute, pudgy and huggable their husband is. Tho where Sally tries to be supportive of Sonic's efforts to stay in shape, Shadow actively sabotages him by buying him treats all the time. Sonic also struggles a bit with self-control...

The Body Is Not An Apology- Book Review

I came across this book after listening to the wonderful spoken word poem by Sonya by the same name on youtube. Highly recommend you to listen to it- her articulation, her words, pierce the soul! The book weaves in not just issues of body image insecurity, but all sorts of marginalizations one witnesses because of sexism, racism, homophobia, disabilities etc and the cruelties with which we think of our own bodies. The various ways in which society teaches us to humiliate those that don't meet its standards, and how we internalize the hatred and start being irredeemably horrible to our own bodies. We judge others to gauge ourselves (paraphrasing Brene Brown here), and often we judge only those aspects of others where we lack (let's say beauty or wealth or children or family), and then create a faulty big picture out of it and feel small. Repeated shaming of our own selves creates neural pathways in our brains, we wire ourselves for self hate. In such instances, meditation is key. How often have you stood in front of a mirror and said, "I love myself", how often have you asked yourself, "how are you?". If you are cringing at how cheesy it sounds, cringe again in wonder that there are some questions you have censored for your own brain because society has labelled it kiddish. I don't think either of these questions are kiddish for the record. Physiological stress triggers white blood cells in our system- we influence our well being, with our emotions (Ref: Why Zebra's Get Ulcers, Robert Sapolsky). It may not be as obvious as it appears. In the age of social media, where we are exposed to upwards of 3000 advertisements every day (there was a quote about us learning about the world through ads...), and we all know what that is, someone terrifying us into feeling ugly or not good enough and shelling out hard earned money. I admire Sonya's prose as she guides us through the catacombs of insecurities and provides pole stars to just accept our selves, scars, cellulites, fat, bones and all. It may appear preachy, however, we wouldn't know unless we start inquiring of our selves, what standards we are trying to meet, why we are buying the things we are buying, and why we feel happiness is just a step away (some money, some weight loss, some love away)...and how often our thoughts are foraged from the bounty others feed us. Will end with these two quote: “An acorn does not have to say, ‘I intend to become an oak tree.” “Saying I’m fat is (and should be) the same as saying my shoes are black, the clouds are fluffy, and Bob Saget is tall. It’s not good, it’s not bad, it just is. The only negativity that this word carries is that which has been socially constructed around it.… We don’t need to stop using the word fat, we need to stop the hatred that our world connects with the word fat.” It's a quick read and if you have ever hated your body or depreciated it with your own words, I think it would be good to get hands on this one.

Redesigns for superkids Sonya and Manik Acorn! Am a bit lazy with glove and shoe designs, unless I have something specific in mind they tend to be kinda basic... Going to eventually redo Estelle's design and also gotta name the baby too. Eventually :P

Sonya got a new haircut! Wasn't really satisfied with it before. Wanted a more windswept look but for it to also be a bit spiky for the hedgehog side of her. She has a longer tail than her mum just to further differentiate them. Sonya didn't just get her dad's speed, she can also turn invisible! Unfortunately she is not all that stealthy in general, nor can she turn her clothes invisible too, and she can't maintain it while using her speed either. Tho the last one is more of a concentration thing. With practice she probably could use her powers together, but seeing as superheroes are illegal in this AU, she's not going to get a chance to do so any time soon...

Bath time was a bit of a challenge when she was younger. It's just as well she's not that stealthy, but even so, hunting down a super fast kid that can turn invisible is a bit of a challenge. Her parents soon learned that if they let go of her once she was nekkid, she'd be gone and they'd have to chase her down. Shadow had the most problems with Sonya and bath time. Many a night was spent chasing after a sopping wet invisible chipmunk girl before he finally got the hang of it...

Manik mostly just got fluffier! Plus a little folded over ear (don't know what that's called if there is a word for it). Still got the gap tooth and shorter messier quills. Like his sister he also got another power as well as super speed: gravity manipulation! Given that he hasn't had much of a chance to explore his full capabilities, he's a bit limited with what he can do right now. When he points at something and says "heavy" or "light" he can increase or decrease the gravity on that thing making it heavier or lighter. Once he stops concentrating on the object it goes back to normal tho. Like Sonya he can't really use his powers together as he tends to lose focus when he's moving too fast.

He doesn't actually need to speak when he uses his gravity powers, but it's an unintentionally trained habit from when his parents were teaching him to control it. Sonic had turned it into a game and Manik has unknowingly limited his own abilities by the rules of said game. Potentially he is a lot more powerful than he's aware, but since he hasn't had the chance to fully explore his abilities thing will remain as they are for now...
