Kingdom Key & Kingdom Hearts: A SoRiku Theory
The Kingdom Hearts series (& its creators) actively emphasizes the ways that its primary protagonist, Sora, is a "normal, ordinary boy". Yet Sora wields the iconic Kingdom Key, the Ultima Keyblade & even a x-blade (as forged by Xehanort): Sora's Story has been that of a Chosen One, even as he fits the archetype of one "Unchosen".
This theory explores the nature of Choice within the KH series, specifically in the context of "Destiny" and prophecies. It employs the "Riku is The Light" & "Necklace" theories, as well as elements of "Sleeping Realm". It also casts Riku as one of those Strange Women in Ponds who Distribute Swords as a Basis of [Galactic World Order].
Sora's story seemingly begins as a Classic Hero's Journey only for such a reading to fall flat when Expectations such as "Getting The Girl" and "Becoming a Keyblade Master" pointedly do not happen.
The driving force of the KH series has always been Riku: Riku wished to see worlds beyond his home, knowing the truth of the KH Multiverse well before proof literally crashlanded in the form of Kairi (a literal shooting star).
It is Riku's Heart that drew the attention of the Worlds at large to the Destiny Islands: the brightness of his light lead Terra, Aqua & Xehanort to meeting Sora in the first place.
Terra chooses Riku as a future Keyblade Master.
Aqua chooses Sora for the sake of preserving Riku's Light, the events of BBS teaching her that the strongest lights cast the longest shadows.
Xehanort chooses Riku as a Dark Vessel, whispering to him & encouraging him to doubt, to mistrust.
It is assumed, by Sora and by Riku, that Riku was also the person responsible for "opening the door" to the Darkness that felled the Destiny Islands. Yet throughout his childhood, each attempt by Riku to open the mysterious door on the play island failed and, when Darkness Falls, it is Kairi who is found at its source (Kairi, who had been expelled from her home by a version of Xehanort & whose heart harboured yet another fragment of the Seeker of Darkness).
Regardless of whether he truly opened the Destiny Islands to Darkness, Riku believed it & through Darkness did he find "freedom" to explore the Worlds Beyond, just as he had always dreamed... except for one, rather significant detail becoming derailed: Sora's presence by Riku's Side.
The two were separated and Sora was almost lost: even with Darkness swallowing Riku whole, the light within his Heart acted in time to save Sora by entrusting to him 'Kingdom Key'. Riku's Keyblade. A physical manifestation of Riku's Heart.
(notably, the "Kingdom Key-D" found by King Mickey was found not too far from the scene where Kingdom Key manifested: it is plausible that this keyblade was also manifested by Riku's Heart, perhaps alongside its 'Light' counterpart - I'd need to check the timeline to see how such a theory holds up)
Kingdom Key was entrusted to Sora, a subconscious act of Riku's Heart that mirrored an earlier act of protection Riku gave to Sora: on the night where Kairi fell to the Destiny Islands, a young Sora felt frightened and a young Riku swore to protect his dearest friend. This oath was sworn in turn sworn by Sora to Riku. They sealed these oaths with tokens they held close: while Sora's charm gifted to Riku remains unknown, Riku entrusted Sora with a crown charm he had had since infancy.
When Riku was 5, Riku entrusted Sora with his Crown. Both boys swore to protect the other.
When Riku was 15, Riku's Heart entrusted itself to Sora in the form of 'Kingdom Key'.
When Riku was ~16, he subconsciously protected Sora by becoming the latter's Dreamel Eater. Within the same timeframe, Riku sacrificed himself entirely to save Sora at the Keyblade Graveyard (an act of sacrifice, an act of True Love).
At every instance where Riku has been at a crossroads, knowingly or not, his Heart has Chosen Sora's: Riku, presumed descendant of Ephemera and a child of the Destiny Islands, has always & continues to choose Sora.
When the pair were reunited in KH2 and confronted the threat of Xemnas, the two fought as one & passed their keyblades between each other intuitively
When the pair existed in parallel realms of Sleep, separated but connected, their heartbeasts joined to form a Waltzing variation of the melody 'Dearly Belove'. They then fought in sync with a Combined Blade, formed from the keyblades "Mirage Split" and "Nightmare's End", acting again as two halves of a whole.
When Riku was to meet his end in the Realm of Darkness, far within the abyss, Sora appeared to him and they once again wielded their Combined Blade. Beast had once reaponded to a 15 year old Riku's questioning of his impossible arrival to Hollow Bastion, where Beast's Beloved Belle was held hostage, that he had "simply believed": belief brought Sora to Riku in the Realm of Darkness, belief brought Sora to the Final World in the wake of Riku's Ultimate Sacrifice.
The premise of Kingdom Key & its counterpart, Kingdom Key-D, being Manifestations of Riku's Heart & indicative of Riku's being the "Child of Destiny" does run into some Logistical Obstacles.
One, if Riku's Keyblade is being wielded by Sora (& Mickey, assuming the two keys were originally one) then whose keyblade is Riku wielding?
Two, how can Riku's Heart manifest multiple keyblades? Posession by Ansem Seeker of Darkness explains 1 of the "extra" keyblades (the key of "all hearts"). The bequeathing ceremony by Terra could explain another. Kingdom Key-D is definitely connected to Kingdom Key yet never specifically associated with Riku, evem being wielded by King Mickey (a stranger to Riku, at that point).
To the first: if Riku's keyblade is being wielded by Sora (& its counterpart by King Mickey), how can Riku wield another keyblade in KH1 even before getting possessed?
There are several immediate & varyingly plausible explanations: Riku's nature as a "Child of Destiny" allowing his Heart to churn out keyblades on demand like some Fey Lady of Avalon; or the other keyblades were not actually manifested by Riku at all.
While I greatly enjoy the imagery of Riku playing the "Lady of the Lake" to Sora's "Arthur" in KH1, given Sora's opening dream sequence already set Riku as being stuck in a Body Of Water (which is additionally representative of Darkness), it is Stretching Things to assume all other Plot Focused keyblades were ALSO fished out from Riku's Heart.
Perhaps Riku's Heart simply conjured new keyblades in response to Sora's Heart taking in new quests: Riku's Heart supplying keys to the metaphoric doors of Sora's Heart Hotel.
It is more likely, however, that the "new" keyblade wielded by Riku (the one currently known as "Braveheart") is a manifestation of SORA'S Heart: Riku entrusted his crown & his heart to Sora, first on the night of the Meteor Shower & then on the night the Islands Fell; Sora, in turn, entrusted his sword & heart to Riku. It explains how each boy readily wields the keyblade of the other & fits within the theme of their hearts beating in sych.
Riku choosing Sora, Riku's entrusting his Heart (literally & figuratively) with Sora, resulted in Destiny Itself 'choosing' Sora: if Riku represents Kingdom Hearts, the subject of his love would naturally become beloved by the Worlds in turn.
Sora acting as "[the] One Sky, One Destiny" due to Sora having the 'Heart' of Destiny through its child (Riku)'s love.
Sora is not only Riku's Dearly Beloved, Sora is THE "Dearly Beloved": beloved by the Worlds, entrusted with their Hearts & appointed their Savior. And all because, dull and ordinary boy that he may be, it is Sora's naturally normal self that Riku fell in love with. Sora may not be any more innately special than anyone else but Sora is special to RIKU, the love between them (knowingly or not) serving as the driving force of their stories & of Destiny itself.

The “Wait, I Die in this Play??” Tier List
Under the cut for play spoiler purposes :3
Each level of dying in a play overrides the previous ones, so if a character has a role that almost dies AND a role that does die, they’re listed as “has died in a play.”
Tumblr media
For the full rundown of having died in a play (this is game-verse; mankai stage would change some things up--notably Kazu would go up into almost dies thanks to Paul’s new development):
Sympathy for the Angel: Michael (Tsumugi) fades away at the end to nothingness
Stranger: Dom (Banri), Jon (Juza), and Nine’s (Sakyo) fates are unclear after the lab explodes
A Clockwork Heart: I’m counting S (Citron) being deactivated as a death in spirit
Ginji the Wanderer: Yokota (Omi) is killed by Ginji; Ginji himself (Sakyo) and Kojima (Taichi) are both critically injured during fights with Yokota and his men
Nocturnality: Franz (Hisoka) and Reo (Azuma) are both vampires, which puts them in “dead the whole time;” however, Reo being stabbed by Izumi bumps him up to “almost dies”
The Wonderful Charlatan of Oz: It’s implied that the Wizards of the East (Tsuzuru) and West (Itaru) are killed offstage by Dorothy by the end of the play
DEAD/UNDEAD: Red (Omi) and Bill (Sakyo) are dead at the start of the play, but are also killed again; Abel (Azami) is techically? Sort of? Half? Dead the whole time but it’s ok Azami dies in a later play; Roy (Taichi) dies in the beginning and then comes back and dies again, making Taichi the true king of dying in plays
The Phantom of the Opera: Richard (Homare) and Erik (Guy) both don’t escape the fire, but their bodies are never found
Knights of the Round IV: Gareth (Masumi) dies in the battle to free Gwen from her wedding to Arthur; (Merlin is defeated but he’s like. a demon and very clearly alive in the very end so he doesn’t count. I also wasn’t sure about King Arthur’s illness, but I think it’s safe to say Merlin didn’t plan for him to die then so)
Die by the Sword: Tojiro (Homare) has an attempt on his life; Kojiro (Guy) is killed by Musashi in their duel
Fallen Blood: The ending is ambiguous enough for me to feel comfortable saying it’s unclear if Blood (Juza) makes it through that last day
Yin Yang Midnight: Geppaku (Citron) is killed by what amounts to magical recoil; Hisui (Guy) then allows himself to be slain
Stray Devil Blues: Walter (Omi) is killed offscreen; Cliff (Azami) is very much killed onscreen; Mark (Taichi) dies while trying to help Lucifer near the very end
Immortal Crow: Tsugunobu (Misumi) is wounded severely enough to put him out of commission for several scenes; Minamoto no Yoritomo’s (Chikage) fate is unclear after his battle with Kurou
+3Ghosts!: Sora (Kumon), Aoi (Kazunari), and Minato (Muku) are dead the whole play. However I’m not counting fading away after completing your unfinished business and finally being able to move on as a death
Twin Kingdoms: Gilbert (Tasuku) and Sasha (Azami) (and Lutz but Shift isn’t in the tier list) are struck down by the dragon and wouldn’t have made it if Cain hadn’t been able to defeat it
South. Hill. Prison.: Ren (Azami) is dead the whole time

Ryu Number: Alice (i.e. of Wonderland)
Okay, I know what you're thinking. K.C., are you really churning out a post on Alice's Ryu Number? Sora is in Smash, for goodness' sake. That's Kingdom Hearts, which gets you the Disney version split-lickety.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that's true. And it would be perfectly reasonable to shut the book on the matter right there and shout, "Problem solved!" But here's a question: Are Alice of Wonderland and Alice Liddell the same person?
That's a rhetorical question, by the way. If a century of Alicologists aren't going to come to an agreement, an opinion off the end of a tumblr post is unlikely to set off a scholarly paradigm shift. For what it's worth, Lewis Carroll himself seemed to consider Liddell and the literary Alice as separate individuals—the latter as more of an idealization than any real person*—but he's got some investment in the matter, so he's not exactly a reliable source.
(This is a joke. Don't at me.)
*Woolf, J. (2010). The Mystery of Lewis Carroll. St. Martin's Press.
... But we're not here for literary analysis, of course. We're here for the Ryu Numbers. So what's Alice Liddell's?
The most obvious route, of course, would be through American McGee's American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns video games. The lore of the second game straight out gives Alice the surname Liddell...
Tumblr media
... and the opening cutscene of the first game features a photograph in Alice's bedroom of someone who might be Lewis Carroll (which is a bit weird, but whatever), as well as an Alice storybook (meaning Alice exists one narrative layer higher than the literary Alice).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...That said, if American McGee did mean for the game Alice Liddell to be the Alice Liddell, that's something it looks like he walked back in game two (or at least went in with plausible deniability about). Game Alice seems to have had just the one sibling, an older sister named Elizabeth, and her father's name was Arthur—the real Alice, on the other hand, had nine siblings in all (jeez), with her only older sister named Lorina and her father named Henry.
(Also all the Wonderland elements explicitly take place in Alice's head, which means technically we shouldn't be counting Wonderland characters any more than we'd count characters that show up in dreams or hallucinations, but I'll pretend not to notice if you pretend not to notice, alright? Call it the Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. precedent.)
Tumblr media
To get to something plausibly Liddeller, I'ma jump back to the Apple II/Commodore 64 era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, the Laurence Yep? Aunno, maybe! I wrote to him once, because I wanted to know if the Charles Edward Stuart that appears in this game is actually Charles Edward Stuart, or just the White King believing himself to be Charles Edward Stuart, both of which seemed likely enough to me given the setting.
Tumblr media
I never got an answer back, probably because I couldn't find any contact info for Laurence Yep and ended up writing to the most recent publisher of his works I could find instead. What I'm saying is that I doubt Mr. Yep ever laid eyes on my letter before it was slam-dunked into the nearest wastebin (Mr. Yep if you are reading this please DM me).
Anyway, shortly before Alice falls into the rabbit hole, gets swept up in the usual Wonderland annoyances, then finally makes her way up and out the same rabbit hole (i.e. no "it was all a dream," it's happening for realsies), Alice runs into a dude on a boat. It's Lewis Carroll, and you know he's Lewis Carroll because he says he's Lewis Carroll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Add that that he's a teller of stories to this Alice, and and it serves as good implication as any that the player character is the historical Alice Liddell.

(Thanks to feedback, I swapped out Narumitsu with Catradora from SPOP)
Surprisingly few ships got more than one submission, so who got in was mostly based on how excited the submitter felt. Also if you have a better picture for any of them (but I don’t want to use fanart without the artists’s permission)

The Mythology of Keyblades: Riku the Beach Boy of Avalon
This theory is partially Crack and partially a genuine investigation into the usage of Arthurian mythology within the KH series.
Tumblr media
(this line from Monty Python & the Holy Grail inspired this whole theory: all i had to do was replace the referenced [Lady of the Lake] with Riku)
If you've loitered about the Kingdom Hearts fandom enough and read enough interviews with Tetsuya Nomura, you'll soon conclude that Riku is Tetsuya Nomura's Favourite Child in this series. Riku is the driving force for most of KH's story beats & Riku has played deuteragonist to Sora, story-wise if not in gameplay, in every game that isn't a prequel. Riku seems to gain a new & unique special ability with every game (often at a harsh price). Yet, for all the time the audience spends with Riku... the series is very careful about revealing anything about the boy beyond his utter devotion to Sora. The game even encourages players to Forget and Overlook the integral roles Riku plays in the series, typically via throwing a Kairi between him & Sora.
Jokes aside, while Riku's Secret Anime Prince coding is STRONG, it is not the point being explored here: there are 2 seemingly nonsensical Disney Crossovers established prior to most everything else: 'Alice in Wonderland' (something somewhat explored in my 'Princesses of Light as Stars' series of tinhattery) and 'The Sword In The Stone'. This post shall examine the latter, an animated adaption of the King Arthur myth, and how it is represented in KH not solely through the character of 'Merlin' but as the underlying principle behind the x-blade, Keyblade Wielding & how Riku acts as Kingdom Hearts itself.
Boy at Beach Distrubiting Swords
Let's start with Riku's Keyblades: he has had more than one, not due to gears or keychains but due to... apparently being able to churn fresh swords from his Heart as the Plot Requires.
The different keyblades used by Riku throughout the series thus far are the following:
Kingdom Key (Sora's default keyblade)
Souleater/Way to the Dawn (Riku's default from KH1 until KH2.9)
the Keyblade of Heart (while possessed by Apprentice Xehanort's Heartless, AKA Ansem Seeker of Darkness);
the [Combined Keyblade/"Gayblade"] (alongside Sora)
Braveheart (Riku's current keyblade)
(given that King Mickey found Kingdom Key-D in the Dark equivalent of the Destiny Islands & the whole "x-blade was made of light & darkness" thing... THAT keyblade, currently wielded by King Mickey, may ALSO come from Riku)
That's 5 different keyblades (6 if we include Kingdom Key-D), and ALL have been seen onscreen with at least 1 other, typically Kingdom Key, marking each of these keyblades as being 'distinct' and 'separate' from each other. Before figuring out what Heart Maths may be at play here... a brief interlude.
Young Adult Gifts Toddler Giant Sword: More Wholesome than it Sounds
Tumblr media
Supposedly, the ability to [manifest] & "wield" a keyblade is only possible through a successful Bequeathing Ceremony: Terra performed such a ceremony for Riku in BBS. This, however, is a method passed on by the Master of Masters & subsequent schools of keyblade masters: given... literally EVERYTHING seen on "traditional" schools of keyblade mastery, this Premise is Factually Dubious. The series shows multiple characters manifesting or otherwise wielding keyblades without any such ceremonies: even assuming that these rites "carry over" through acts of Posession and Cloning, the Need for a ceremony becomes questionable. This would not be the first (nor last) time in the KH series that the "knowledge" of Foretellers, Mentors & Scholars prove to be Assumptions rather than Absolute Fact.
Exhibit A: Axel & Accidents
Tumblr media
Axel is the best example as, unless we are later informed that Subject X performed the ceremony on Lea (or that Roxas or Xion did so without knowing), Axel has never been part of nor possessed by an existing keyblade wielder: his keyblade is entirely his own, a surprise to all.
Sora & Kairi were never formally bequeathed a keyblade though the latter "accidentally" inherited the ability from Aqua in BBS. Sora never had such a ceremony, the KH Wiki (dubious resource that it is) explains Sora's keyblade wielding as being a result of Ventus sleeping within Sora's Heart: I think it is more likely that, unlike the Formal Ceremonies of past keyblade schools may have taught, Hearts do not actually require outside recognition of "worth" in order to manifest a keyblade.
Once Upon A Meteor Shower
Tumblr media
Riku's Heart entrusting Kingdom Key to Sora in KH1, a last-ditch effort from its Light to keep to its Oath of Protection, strikes me as being more "faithful" to what we have observed of keyblades in-game. For all that the formally schooled Keyblade Wielders past recited "May Your Heart Be Your Guiding Key", no one embodies the intent of this principle more than the entirely self-taught Sora: Riku and King Mickey likely next closest in trusting their Hearts over what they have been taught.
A Heart entrusting its physical manifestation to Another due to the Connection between them seems a "Truer" bequeathment than the (admittedly heartwarming) recitations of a stranger. Keyblades may NOW be deemed "weapons" to conquer Darkness... but the original x-blade was made of Light AND Darkness, a union of forces working in balance rather than opposition. The first x-blade was a tool for Protection, not Hurt: a creation of Heart and, thus, of Love.
Exhibit B: Body & Hearts
Tumblr media
A creation of "Heart". As in, 1 heart = 1 keyblade. Multiple hearts in 1 body? Multiple keyblades.
Roxas is the Go-To example: the Nobody Twin of Naminé, created when Sora "unlocked" Kairi from his Heart whilst Ventus slept within it.
Roxas, in his every appearance, is capable of Dual Wielding: a keyblade from Sora, a keyblade from Ventus. Upon gaining an independent, replika body... Roxas can still, apparently, dual-wield.
...despite no longer sharing the Hearts of Sora nor Ventus (nor Xion).
(as this is a Riku speculation post, not a "what the heck is up with Roxas" one, i'll just... put a Pin in this mystery for now but the "maths" of 1 heart = 1 keyblade are, indeed, still facts of canon: Nomura confirmed as much when revealing the Above Album Art he made for Utada Hikaru's KH3 songs)
Exhibit C: Proof of Concept
Tumblr media
Then we have Aqua: she lost her keyblade between saving Ven & falling into Darkness. The keyblade of Master Eraqus came to her aid: this is consistent with the established concept of Bequeathing Ceremonies. It's uncertain whether the same person can bequeath keyblade-wielding to multiple persons but it seems likely given the scale of the Unions in KHX.
(At that same point in time, the Heart of Eraqus was hidden within a Nort'd Terra: 3 Hearts existed within Apprentice Xehanort, all of them in conflict with each other, to varying degrees.)
The keyblade Aqua receives, the keyblade of Master Eraqus, is named 'Master's Defender'. This was originally the keyblade of the Dandelion Brain but was passed onto Ephemer and from pupil to student until eventually being inherited by Eraqus. This seemingly aligns with the concept of Masters 'bequeathing' keyblades to students, specifically THEIR keyblades.
Interestingly, Riku has never wielded Terra's keyblade (or its likeness, via keychain) 'Earthshaker/Ends of the Earth' after its being bequeathed to him, likely due to its remaining with Terra's 'Soul', the 'Lingering Will' within his armour. If this is the case... NONE of the keyblades Riku has conjured or wielded are a result of his Bequeathment Ceremony. Terra's Keyblade becomes a 6th (or 7th) keyblade connected to Riku, albeit an unused one.
Speaking of Terra...
Tumblr media
Xemnas (the Nobody of Apprentice Xehanort AKA 'TerraNort') is NEVER seen wielding a keyblade, let alone two.
...but he DOES wield two [lightsabers]/'Ethereal Blades'.
If Xemnas had ever believed in his own personhood, it's plausible that he could have dual wielded keyblades like Roxas... though the conflict between the Hearts of Xehanort & Terra are unlikely to have cooperated long enough for dualwielding to be sustainable in combat.
Back to the Beginning
Tumblr media
Kingdom Key was formed by the Light within Riku's Heart. That Light entrusted itself to Sora while Riku himself was lost in Darkness. Riku is later seen wielding a different keyblade, 'Soul Eater'. Given that KH1 sets up a premise of there being 'two' Kingdom Keys, one of Light & one of Darkness... perhaps 'Soul Eater' was made from the Darkness within Riku's Heart. Maleficent or Ansem SOD would know better than most anyone how to create such a thing.
(it's still Weird that Riku's Heart is the ONLY Heart we see capable of manifesting TWO, simultaneously existing & separately wielded keyblades: Riku using Souleater never prevented Sora from using Kingdom Key; Souleater becoming 'Way to the Dawn' did not affect Kingdom Key; and Riku & Sora use each other's keyblades interchangeably in KH2, even dualwielding at times)
While Riku is possessed by Ansem SoD (the heartless of Apprentice Xehanort), he wields a keyblade forged by the hearts of 6 of the 7 Princesses of Heart: this keyblade is named 'Keyblade of Heart' or 'Keyblade of People's Hearts'. This is an artificially made keyblade, wielded by an entity made up of at least 4 people's Hearts (Riku, Xehanort, Terra, Eraqus) and it does not seem to survive past Ansem SoD's defeat.
During the events of KH2.9 (at the 'Drop Point' between the first timeline of KH3 & Sora's First Retcon), Riku and King Mickey find themselves struggling in the depths of the Realm of Darkness. They had hoped to find the missing Master Aqua yet their journey has only proven the point of Master Yen Sid's preventing such a rescue 10 years prior: alone, surviving the journey to the abyss would be all but impossible. Similarly, Sora immediately post-DDD would not have survived the pace set by Mickey & Riku: Sora needed the lessons and confidence boost he found through Herc & Meg before he was truly ready for Aqua's Attempted Rescue.
Before Sora has his Hero Moment (complete with Riku's slow-mo heart-eye reaction to it), Riku's keyblade 'Way to the Dawn'... breaks. Riku also spontaneously gets a Hair Cut. Not due to any attack landing on him from the Demon Tide nor due to any bout of Gay Agony: just... "randomly" (Sleeping Realm Theory covers this).
So then Riku casually manifests a BRAND NEW KEYBLADE, while not at all possessed nor acting as a Heart Hotel, and that keyblade is Braveheart.
(which is basically Kingdom Key but Make It Modern)
It's also in the Realm of Darkness that Sora & Riku first wield their Combined Keyblade whilst in the same plane of reality: in DDD, they wielded their blade across parallel dreamscapes. The [combined keyblade] in KH3 looks exactly as it did in Dream Drop Distance: half Mirage Split, half Nightmare's End.
How Many Hearts Does 1 Riku Have?
The highest number of "hearts" occupying 1 Riku is 10, in KH1: his own, Xehanort's & Terra's, the ghost of Master Eraqus (still biding his time for Maximum Drama), with the 6 Disney Princesses of Heart smooshed within the 'Keyblade of Heart' the Riku Vessel is wielding.
By that time in KH1, both Sora and Riku have wielded Kingdom Key. Riku had also acquired & begun wielding the 'Souleater' keyblade.
Kingdom Key is the keyblade born of the Light in Riku's Heart: a sword entrusted to a Crowned Prince from someone hidden within water, a gift that marks its wielder as a saviour and a fate-chosen king. Sora bears Riku's Crown, a pendant he is never seen without, and Riku (& his Heart) was sinking within both literal (storm and tide) and metaphoric (falling into darkness/sinking within deep waters) waters when Sora receives Kingdom Key. When Sora arrives in Traverse Town, the Final Fantasy & Disney characters there hold Kingdom Key in reverence: the Key follows Sora so THEY follow him too.
There is an Irony about every keyblade-related argument Sora & Riku have in KH1: Kingdom Key WAS Riku's before it was Sora's, the authority of the sword & reverence given to its wielder WAS on "loan" from Riku... but, ultimately, the wielder chosen by the Physical Representation of Riku's Heart & the Light within it?
Yeah, no, sorry Riku: your Heart Likes Sora More.
After KH1, Riku never attempts to "reclaim" Kingdom Key: it's probably during the events between KH1 & KH2 that Riku realises that Kingdom Key is not only a literal manifestation of his own Heart but that he believes Sora to be the best person to wield that "Heart", that "Destiny".
Even if Riku had not somehow managed to manifest the Souleater/Way to the Dawn keyblade, needing to "borrow" Kingdom Key during his year-long vigil at Sora's bedside... I doubt he would have KEPT the sword or that it would let itself be "kept".
Riku's unique connections to both Light AND Darkness make it somewhat reasonable to conclude that 'Souleater' is the Dark counterpart to Kingdom Key: a keyblade formed by the Darkness of Riku's Heart, a keyblade that evolves to 'Way to the Dawn' and Riku's efforts to master his Darkness and return to the Light.
(this still begs the question: how the heck does Kingdom Key-D fit into all this?? no, i'm genuinely asking: what is up with that keyblade)
ALTERNATIVELY! Kingdom Key-D was very logically forged by Riku's Darkness, manifesting in the Realm of Darkness alongside the Fallen Destiny Islands. This makes it Interesting that Mickey could carry it around prior to personally meeting Riku but, regardless of any realizations on its nature & likely relationship with Riku (or Sora), Mickey wields this keyblade-D from KH1 onward.
(This potentially leaves Mickey's Original Keyblade, seen in BBS, as yet ANOTHER keyblade available for Riku's use: the count has risen to 9, 8 if excluding Key-D.)
So... if Riku's Darkness forged Kingdom Key-D, what was Souleater & what IS Braveheart?
Alt #1: Riku, like any Strange Pond Person, can summon as many Magic Swords as Destiny Requires because... he is Literally Kingdom Hearts & that leaves ALL hearts "free" for his use.
Alt #2: The keyblades Riku wields (Souleater, Way to the Dawn & Braveheart) are all manifestations of SORA'S Heart. Sora may be oblivious as to why he is so fixated on Riku but, if Chain of Memories is anything to go by, Sora's HEART knows what it wants, damnit! Even without any allegedly required Bequeathment Ceremony, Riku is a "Child of Destiny" and had already crowned Sora as one too: just as Riku's Heart reached out to Sora, Sora's Heart may have reached BACK for Riku. Thus both boys end up with Keyblades: each holding onto a piece of the other (somewhat literally).
This gives additional explanation to their easy trading & wielding of each other's Keyblades in KH2: the keyblades "belonged" to BOTH boys and always had.
This interpretation easily applies itself to Sleeping Realm Theory, too: 'Way to the Dawn' still "broke" because of Riku's Sacrifice but instead of figuratively representing Riku's Heart "breaking" via his actually Dying, it would represent physically the effect that Sacrifice had on Sora: his Heart broke, "dying" with Riku.
Alt #3: Riku's extra keyblades were from Maleficent, "Ansem", Ansem &/or King Mickey. The timeline allows for Maleficent's providing Riku with the 'Souleater' keyblade: it does not QUITE align for the broken connection between Riku & his Would-Be Fairy Godmother that we can assume happened upon her death in KH1, nor account for any effects caused by her subsequent "resurrection". The timelines required for the other candidates to be involved are not consistent with that of the games nor supplementary canon.
Before wrapping up, let's acknowledge the Giant Crowned Rainbow Sword in the room:
Tumblr media
The [combined keyblade], wielded by Riku & Sora in DDD & KH3, is a manifestation of "their Hearts [beating] In Tune". It is That Simple: any efforts to straightwash its existence WILL cause plot holes so just Accept The Gayblade is Gay.
That the Gayblade just so coincidentally resembles both the Ultima keyblade(s) and various x-blades, definitely fit most description of what the x-blade is & how it can be made?
These are also Just Gay. Kingdom Hearts has been building up to (gay) Love being the Ultimate Power of the series from its very beginning: it has ALWAYS used heart imagery and symbolism, used Disney Couples to mirror the changing relationship of Sora & Riku, used "the connections between hearts" as a child's understanding of love (in all forms).
The logical evolution for a Coming of Age journey about a Boy & his Best Friend, in a series that repeatedly uses & is named for 'hearts', who have become stronger as their hearts became more attuned... is for said Boy to realise, acknowledge and recognise that the connection of their hearts has Changed into something less platonic: romantic love, like that between couples in Disney films, like Riku (& Selphie) brought up to Sora through star-shaped fruit before ever exploring those stars personally.
The [combined keyblade] was naturally forged through mutual devotion: its existence implies that the fabled x-blade of legend was ALSO forged by mutual love, that Kingdom Hearts chose its guardian because of Love, that the x-blade's legendary strengh came from its need to protect its dearly Beloved: there is no Straight Explanation for Sora & Riku being able to make the combined keyblade.

Beyblade -> Date A Live
Here is another of my random rambles from the cold darkness that is my spirit. The last word of that sentence is apt, this Beyblade Burst and Beyblade: Metal Saga recast is based on Date A Live. Once again, the main OC of mine will be included, this time on both sides, as I have a Beyblade variant and a Date A Live variant of said OC. There's also a small list of what their abilities would be, if the intersex thing were to become a Spirit. Because all the positions of the Sefirot and Qliphoth are filled in by canon people, I had to look through the many Abrahamic angels to locate those that fit with Sahaidachny's character that were not in said respective structures of the Kabbalah. Though supposedly Uriel was the guardian of the Sefirot of Kabbalah as well as the Gatekeeper of Eden. I also looked to the Book of Revelations and the Book of Genesis and stumbled upon something called Demonolatry which seems interesting.
I thought I'd combine two of my favourite series into a post. It seems ridiculous, but I couldn't care less.
Once again, not all people from each series is included. Closest match based on MBTI and Enneagram used. A list of Spirits in each AU is supplied, in which the Angel is instead based on the person's Beyblade.

--------------------------------------------------
C.J.S. is intersex, and the closest thing humans can get to being a biological hermaphrodite. In their hypothetical arc, Furutani Youkai -> Furutani Imperfect, their Angel would only be revealed near the end, and they would mostly be seen with their Demon King.
The concepts of subconscious loneliness, self-worth, getting them to open their heart again, wanting someone to understand them, finding the truth of one's self and being able to be one's self are the core tenets of their story. After realising that last part, they spontaneously broke into silent sobbing for the first time in their life. Being mentally and emotionally bullied for 10-11 years of your life purely for personality and conditions/disabilities does that (They have Autism, Epilepsy, Todd's Paralysis, Psoriasis, Narcolepsy, Hypersensitivity, a genetic fault that results in a lack of body temperature regulation).
They often wear a lavender purple kimono as their casual outfit, and otherwise will wear an ice-blue shirt with a snowstorm-esque pattern alongside loose ice-white trousers and a thin but large lavender/soft dark purple jacket resembling a lab coat or dressing gown.* When attending Raizen, they wear the school uniform. Both variants, due to being intersex.
They are naturally lacking in emotional expression. To them, a small smile means they are extremely happy and a minuscule frown means they are incredibly unhappy. They are seemingly cold/emotionless on the surface and acted cold-hearted/emotionless to the point where they were convinced its who they were, but a slowly re-emerging emotion both confused and plagued them until they freaked out and finally revealed - shoddily at first until they suddenly shouted in confusion and despair "I don't know what's wrong with me!" - what they thought of themselves to a group that always thought they didn't care about the group before the final battle. Furu has gone suicidal and was at a mental point where the slightest thing could tip them one way or the other. They had turned out to be someone who saw themselves as some worthless cripple who had lost all use to themselves or Shido and couldn't break or change themselves for their art or for his sake. Needless to say he wasn't impressed with this revelation (I don't regret the reference). Most noticeably, they had an unexplainable intellectual and emotional obsession (read: romantic love - only fully realised in the middle of the final battle of their arc when they were told by Itsuka that they're allowed to be themselves. Cue subsequent curling up and denial with the sealed Spirits helping them realise the truth of their subconscious, which finally made them admit their inner feelings and how they came to be. Come the transition from Inverse to Normal including Uriel appearing for the first time and their subsequent defeat finally able to move on from their past, they thank Itsuka for everything and say they're ready to find out what a date is. Weirdly, they use El Elyon as a makeshift outfit for the date, because the only Spirit with less shame than Furutani is Tobiichi. It's the autism. After said date involving utilising Michael to go to a science museum, an art museum and an Italian restaurant, they willingly allow themselves to be sealed.) with the one that seals Spirits who had successfully befriended them despite previous life experiences within their subconscious. In reality, their true personality is apathetic to everyone except those they bond with, with whom they are really shy on the inside, which their lack of expression fails to show to others. They can't even start a conversation on their own. Also slightly creepy due to a natural talent for appearing out of nowhere and for casual stalking of person/people they become really romantically close to. Their emotional intelligence is absurdly low and they do not understand exactly what bonds are, only that they enjoy them. An individual with almost absurd levels of typical intelligence through prodigal talent/hard effort who had gone emotionally despondent and isolated themselves completely due to events in their life. Couple that with having been betrayed by so-called friends who turned into bullies and you have someone who simply is desperate to be understood. Prior to sealing, they saw themselves as beyond worthless and had a history of being used purely for their talents particularly in art - being an artist is their hobby and one of their passions - and intellectually. Since being sealed and joining the main group, they have become much happier upon accepting that it's alright to be themselves. They are also asexual, and demiromantic, meaning only close friends have a chance of ending up in a love-based relationship.
The theme of C. Sahaidachny is searching for the truth (after 10-11 years of mental & emotional torment & bullying for who they were desensitized them to almost everything/wrecked their emotional capacity/made them inwardly terrified of opening up to anyone) about who they are, and ultimately realizing they're allowed to be themselves and learning that they are not less than worthless. Learning not to be over-defensive around everyone and being able to trust others again are also key facets in the development towards that.
The Angel takes the form of a Shimenawa inspired by the same structure on Regnar** with colour alterations - Red -> Lavender Purple, Light Gold -> Dark Purple, White -> Black. It is engraved with various formulae and equations on the back, as well as what appears to be a painting of cold air and dandelions. The Shimenawa can also be wielded as a weapon in its own right.
The Demon King takes the form of an ethereal compass sigil**** coloured in ice-blue and ice-white. The Roman Numerals inscribed on the compass are a purposeful falsehood linking back to the motif of truth and the destruction of the barriers that stand in the way of discovering the truth, the answer so to speak.
The Astral Dress is based on Regnar** of Beyblade Burst, besides the head and the Shimenawa-esque structure which is what the Angel is based on, with the following colour alterations - White -> Ice-White, Red -> Lavender Purple, Light Gold -> Royal Purple, Blue -> Ice-Blue, Dark Grey -> Black. A halo that somewhat resembles the accretion disk of a black hole (or the hypothetical gravastar) forms above the head. The concepts of the celestial universe - and art - itself are the motif of that which essentially combines the scientific and the occult into one collection of abilities. El Elyon possesses a high durability bested only by Adonai Melek. However it is also one of the slowest, which is its one weakness, and Furutani can easily be caught in sensory overload rendering them vulnerable, particularly against multiple opponents.
In the Inverse form, the Astral Dress is more based on Genesis rather ironically, minus the head part and the lower half which is based on the image that isn't Genesis. The colour scheme is altered from the basis as the following - White -> Ice-White, Light Pink -> Ice-Blue, Gold -> Black, Red -> Dark Gold, Dark Grey -> White, Purple -> Lavender Purple. A spiked halo forms above the head and various distorted formulae and equations circle the user.
The Astral Dress is vastly different to the general norm of these clothing items in style. The Inverse Form is no more powerful than the main form, the difference is fighting style. Except for one technique in which the Angel version is weirdly more powerful than the Demon King version if only by slightly.
Clarkov's/Furu's Angel is known as Uriel - based on the being known as the Archangel of Salvation among other titles - representing the angel of wisdom and truth who guides people to answers they seek. Uriel is said to be the gatekeeper of Eden, the one who acts as bodyguard to the Kabbalah and by extension the Sefirot, the one who warned Noah of the biblical flood and one of the four angels - alongside Raphael, Michael and Gabriel - who protected the four corners of Earth.
Furu's Demon King is known as Abaddon - otherwise known as The Destroyer - representing the fallen angel of destruction and the abyss. Abaddon is said to be the embodiment of God's wrath who keeps existence in balance, unleashing their power on anything that may greatly disturb it. Essentially the enforcer of the angels. They are also regarded as playing a vital role in the Apocalypse itself, casting divine judgement on those who do not believe as well as those who fake their belief with their locust-derived plagues born from the depths of Hell.
As mentioned earlier, in the Book of Enoch, Uriel is described as the guardian of the Tree of Life (the Kabbalah, which bares the Sefirot that the main 10 Spirits are based on). As such, Furutani's Uriel would be the complete all-rounder. Their battle capabilities are roughly on par with Metatron, it has similar divination powers to Rasiel though it can't make stuff reality, and its strongest move Regalia is pretty much a better version of Eden and would override Paradise Lost if activated inside it. Which, they would do, because Furu utterly despises the entire concept of Eden as a whole. Uriel would effectively be a Story-Breaker Power like Rasiel, Michael, Eden and Ain Soph Aur.
The database would rank Furutani as an SS-Class Spirit, on the same level as Rinne and then above her too. The only reason Furutani wouldn't class as an SSS-Class Spirit is because that spot is reserved purely for Mio who is just far ahead of absolutely every other Spirit, naturally as the Spirit of Origin. Besides Mio who could still curb-stomp them despite all this, Furutani would almost certainly be the most powerful Spirit of all unless Mukuro had anything to say about it. However due to their inexperience in battle and disabilities, they would also likely be defeated by fused Yamai while being level both with Origami and Tohka due to their Fecto Elfilis-esque fighting style. Since their personality resembles (and their powers are based on) Faust and Gwyn Ronny who are at or near the top and both beyond overpowered in their respective series/verses, this absurd level of overpowered-ness would fit. Though frankly, Furu's personality resembles Rin Tezuka's more than anything. It also resembles to various extents the personalities of Mizore Shirayuki and Naho Saenoki. Furu seems confusing, but they aren't. Furu will tell you that.
In this version of the verse, the Main Spirit power ranking would go like this, along with their assigned classes for my version (equivalent to canon, except for alterations based on grading that goes from SSS to A with anything from A to C and below utilised for AST or others*):
Mio Takamiya - SSS-Class (Ain/Ain Soph/Ain Soph Aur)
Isaac Westcott - SSS-Class (Qemetiel/Belial/Athiel)
Shido Itsuka - SSS-Class (All main Angels + Uriel)
Mukuro Hoshimiya - SS-Class (Michael)
Yamai Kazamachi - SS-Class (Raphael [Fused])
Tohka Yatogami - SS-Class (Sandalphon)
Clarkov Furutani - SS-Class (Uriel)
Origami Tobiichi - SS-Class (Metatron)
Kurumi Tokisaki - SS-Class (Zaphkiel)
Nia Honjou - SS-Class (Rasiel)
Rinne Sonogami - SS-Class (Eden)
Miku Izayoi - S-Class (Gabriel)
Kotori Itsuka - S-Class (Camael)
Kaguya/Yuzuru Yamai - S-Class (Raphael)
Mayuri - S-Class (Kerubiel)
Ren - AAA-Class (Samael)
Marina Arusu - AAA-Class (???)
Rio Sonogami - AA-Class (Eden [Incomplete])
Yoshino Himekawa - AA-Class (Zadkiel)
Natsumi Kyouno - AA-Class (Haniel)
Maria Arusu - A-Class (???)
*And an extra upgrade to Miku based on the biblical idea of Michael, Uriel, Gabriel and Raphael protecting the four corners of the globe. Nia gets the extra upgrade too as I see Rasiel as better than it gets credit for, along with a slight downgrade to Rinne when scaling is taken into account. Ren and Mayuri are given a class too. The Inverse variants are the same class as the normal variants in this version, but are still generally better in combat.
Weirdly, the many yandere Spirits would include Rinne, Mukuro, Furutani and Mio, potentially even Origami and Kurumi. In essence, Furutani would be equivalent to Rin Tezuka or even Mizore Shirayuki.
The attacks are partially based on those used by Gwyn Ronny and extra info about their power is also based on Gwyn and his canon battles. They are also partially inspired by Faust and Twisted Tempo. Their main arc and recovery is also inspired by the story of Gwyn Ronny in Beyblade Burst as is the case for all variants of the OC.
Hebrew translations done online, expect wrongness.
Name: Clarkov Sahaidachny/Furutani
Qlipha Crystal: Apocalypse
Sephira Crystal: Genesis
Astral Dress: El Elyon
Angel: Uriel
Demon King: Abaddon
Codename: Sage
Angel Title: Celestial Monarch
Demon King Title: Truth In Abyss
Spirit Rank: SS-class
Inverse Rank: SS-class
Attacks of Uriel/Abaddon:
Onbashira [טוריי (Turre) -> Torii] -> A vaguely lavender purple band traces itself and expands into an ethereal barrier that looks like a celestial paintbrush stroke. It contracts upon contact and then pushes out to deflect incoming attacks. It is capable to deflecting Lahathelev (Kerubiel) and Shemesh (Metatron) at once with great effort. It is also capable of withstanding a meteor summoned by Lataib (Michael) when working together with other defensive techniques. A blast from Megiddo (Camael) or the effects of Solo (Gabriel) are enough to break Onbashira.
Veritas [אשת שלג (Esht Shelag) -> Yuki-Onna] -> A lavender purple pocket draws surrounding residue mana into the arm which forms a large ethereal blade which then back-slashes against the opponent. This move is able to defeat Zadkiel. It can also severely damage Zaphkiel. When enhanced by March (Gabriel), Veritas (Uriel) can take down Zadkiel and Haniel in one go after being momentarily pushed back. The move is sent packing by Symphony (Gabriel) if the latter is amplified by enough soundwaves.
Spectrum [מארח שמימי (Mareh Shamimi) -> Heavenly Host] -> A celestial fog that looks a bit like intergalactic space and is absurdly cold like intergalactic space appears and slowly spreads around the area surrounding Furutani, who then slowly brings their hand which is glowing lavender purple through the fog. Once fully outstretched in front of them, they then close their hand while at the same time bringing their arm still straightened from in front of them to as far behind them as it will reasonably go, causing the celestial fog to disperse. At the fog's sudden fading, the Shimenawa fades and transfers its energy in the form of equations and formulae to the user giving them a boost in power. In the Inverse Form, the wings fade instead. This move allows Uriel to hold its own against a fused Yamai's Raphael, and can be used to sustain El Elyon after Jerez (Michael) initially dismantles it. The hair turns lavender in this state.
Eclipse [רוח רפאים (Roah Refaim) -> Youkai] -> {Demon King Version} -> The corrupted form of the ultimate move of Uriel/Abaddon, used by Abaddon. The compass glows violently in an ice-blue colouring with the needles rotating counter-clockwise at breakneck speed, and the wings shift to where their end points are separated by a small gap in front of the user and emit a colossal shockwave which retracts in on itself and then gather residue mana in that gap before the energy is grabbed and thrown into the sky where it expands outwards in a bright ball of lavender purple light. Within it is a dense celestial fog within which the user forms a scissor-esque weapon***** in one hand and a Gohei/paintbrush thing in the other hand and charges towards the opponent. Eclipse (Abaddon) is capable of matching Artelif (Metatron).
Parity [סופת שלגים (Sufat Shlagim) -> Snowstorm] -> {Angel Version} -> The true nature of the ultimate move of Uriel/Abaddon, used by Uriel and unlocked after Clarkov finally realises they're allowed to be themselves, stops being Inverse and uses their Angel Uriel for the first time near the end of the hypothetical final battle between Clarkov and Shido in the fan-made arc Furutani Beginning. The Shimenawa emits a colossal shockwave and the user holds their hands to their heart and releases them. The user then holds both hands around the ball of energy and gently releases it as if they were reaching out to hug someone, upon which it forms an aura on El Elyon (similar in appearance to Eclipse Genesis's Superior-Flux) that gathers mana from the surrounding area and draws it towards below where the user is standing in the form of black-ish jagged streaks of light. Upon contact with an opposing force, the ball spreads out in a small space containing a celestial scene with ghostly structures resembling nebulae, star systems and more. The space subsequently fades as the origin point explodes and forms into the shape of a royal purple & lavender purple galaxy with quasars of the same colour erupting from the centre where Uriel's user and the opponent have collided. There's also a lot of dandelions present. The Angel equivalent is more powerful than the Demon King equivalent, a rarity for Uriel and in general. Parity (Uriel) can match and even surpass Artelif (Metatron) in direct combat.
Revelation [אמן (Amen) -> Artist] -> The natural ability of Uriel to quantify and produce a solution for any subjective problem that comes to the user's mind, no matter how difficult. It manifests in the form of equations and formulae flowing from the Shimenawa into the head. However it is ineffective when confronted with objective problems. The Inverse Form does not have this ability as it is clouded by vast negative emotions. Think of it like this, Rasiel excels at objective information while Uriel excels at subjective information.
Regalia [עיוות/מושלם (Katawa/Amants) -> Imperfect] -> Uriel's final and most powerful ability after having it's hidden power hypothetically unlocked by Shifuru (Michael). The Shimenawa moves from behind the user to the front and emits a shockwave even greater than that from Parity, powerful enough to shake the entire vicinity for miles around and partially shred Astral Dresses caught within the blast. From the focal point of the shockwave, a barrier similar to that of Parity expands outward that contains its own reality which Uriel has total control of via a shrine complete with a torii and onbashira in the epicentre of a field covered in snow and dandelions. It is extremely similar to Paradise Lost (Eden) and is effectively a superior version of Eden in terms of power and capabilities but is vastly outclassed by Ain Soph because of course it is. It can also act as a defensive barrier capable of withstanding attacks from both Halvanhelev (Sandalphon) and El Kanaph (Raphael) at the same time.
The Limited form, after being sealed, has access to vastly weakened variants of its abilities. Shifuru (Michael) is capable of awakening Uriel's hidden power. With the fading of Genesis alongside the other Sephira Crystals, El Elyon and Uriel disappeared with them.
Uriel is virtually powerless against Ain Soph Aur, Ain Soph and Ain. The likes of Henet and Anaph crush Onbashira, Veritas, Lustrous and Parity into fine dust. However Revelation can help hold back the effects of Ain Soph briefly. Even Regalia is completely rended by Ain Soph and Ain, mainly because while Regalia is superior to Eden, Ain Soph is vastly superior to Regalia. The barrier form of Regalia is also overpowered.

[ • f/ovember takeover!! • ]
" it's called fashionably late. "
Tumblr media
" alright, here's the deal; our darling little lover has been in need of a break. and most of us here have taken it upon ourselves to rub shoulders for a while and answer all of your burning questions. maybe even talk with some other friends of our partners and their partners? ah, who knows.
might as well make fools of ourselves, right? nothing wrong with a little bit of fun. and since i, king of santa destroy, have been recently promoted to husband status, i figured i would take up the mantle and make the announcement. no jokes about the fact that we forgot our own wedding.
now - START THE GAME. "
