Hi yes it is 4am and I am still wide awake. I can't sleep, drinking that baja blast probably wasn't a good idea. I'm particularly thinking about Chapter 21 again. Like...Pit learned earlier that chapter that if he dies, Dark Pit dies as well. So why did he sacrifice his wings, well knowing that he could very likely die? I mean, the obvious answer is that, well. He was thinking recklessly in the moment! He saw someone in trouble, and his first instinct was to jump in and save him.

But....there's something else there too. The fact that, after multiple cues, Pit still kept going, and was still willing to effectively tear himself apart for the possibility he could save someone? Viridi told him to stop multiple times, yet he still dismissed her concerns and stuck to his own judgements.

Throughout the game, we've seen the fact that Pit is kind of a yes-man. I mean, Phosphora literally points it out. Being Palutena's commander, he's used to fighting for her. Getting wounded for her, even dying for her. Pit has that trust that if he dies for Lady Palutena, he will always come back again. However, when he jumped to save Dark Pit, things were similar yet different. This time, this act of self-sacrifice for Dark Pit really could have been the end of his life forever. Yet he felt that that was a worthy price. He's literally willing to set himself on fire to keep others warm.

I've recently seen a lot of discussion about how the mindset of heroic self-sacrifice can really be a display of mental anguish, and with Pit I can't help but feel like that's the case. His dependence on others is intrinsic to his character, and the mutuality of the relationships he has with others is really endearing. That being said, he really does feel like he owes everyone a favor. It's in his nature as a hero, after all.

I really think Palutena put it amazingly at the beginning of chapter 22: "We both owe Pit...think of the sacrifices he made to save the both of us."

i don't know what order to start Dissecting, so i'll just start with:

it's absolutely fascinating how the dynamic Wally & Barnaby had - to my knowledge - before the update, and a dynamic i'd seen speculated elsewhere and generally accepted, has been completed turned on its head

see, given that Wally is the "main character" and Barnaby is classified as "his best friend", i got the feeling that Barnaby kind of... tags along on Wally's 'shenanigans'. that he's the sidekick, the best friend. especially since their dynamic has been previously & briefly described as "Barnaby is very polite to Wally." he's the Companion.

but the audios sorta paint a reverse picture. in the Interview, when Barnaby enters stage right, he completely bowls over Wally's introduction and dominates the interview. when the interviewer asks how the two of them are handling the fame, even outright asking Wally, Barnaby doesn't hesitate to answer the question himself, and only about himself. Wally doesn't get another word in edge-wise until the interviewer explicitly singles Wally out.

(now, an argument could be made that Barnaby knew that Wally was somewhat overwhelmed with all of the questions, and tried to take the reins to give him a reprieve. but, considering that the interview seems to be very early on the possible timeline - like, very soon after Welcome Home debuted - i don't think this is likely. i doubt Barnaby and Wally would've had the time to solidify their dynamic or really get to know each other that well yet)

and Barnaby continues to take point in pretty much all of their other conversations, too. like in the mystery Howdy/Barnaby/Wally audio, their interaction gives off the vibes that Wally is Barnaby's sidekick, his tag-along.

(on a related tangent, it's fascinating how the website described the episodes as "[beginning] with Wally introducing the focus or theme for the day before coming across other characters who would join him on his escapades until the end of the day." but from pretty much everything we've seen so far, it seems like He's the one who's just along for the ride, bouncing from neighbor shenanigan to neighbor shenanigan instead of having his own adventures.

of course, if the 14 audios are present time, which is honestly somewhat likely, this could be because the show isn't running. they aren't doing episodes - they're just existing, doing their things. no need for Wally to take point in any way shape or form. tangent over)

in the 14 audios with Barnaby, he doesn't even acknowledge Wally until the very end - which, of course, could be because that's how the scenes are set up. except that in some of them, the characters do directly acknowledge Wally's presence outside of the endings. Eddie in 5-14, Howdy and Poppy in 1-14, and Frank in 4-14 (technically, since he was infodumping to Wally at the very start before Barnaby interrupted). you'd think that a guy would try to include his best friend a little more!

maybe i'm reading into it too much. & given what we know about Wally as a character, it would make sense for Barnaby to be the go-getter Main Guy of the two. but it really seems like its Barnaby & Wally instead of Wally & Barnaby. he's just kinda... there. going along with whatever Barnaby is up to.

but also, on the other side of things - & it's occurring to me as i type this, it's interesting how in a lot of audios, Barnaby seems to seek Wally out. in "Just So", he shows up to fetch Wally. in 4-14, Barnaby interrupts Frank and Wally's gardening session, almost as if he's stopping by to check on his little buddy. in 7-14, Barnaby calls Julie's house (presumably) searching for Wally, or at least checking in once again. something to consider in all of this!

just. came across this panel and got unexpectedly and wildly emotional about aizawa becoming a dad. because like. he cares about his students, he's shown time and time again that he'll push them and fight for them against villains and the media and he'll go to his last breath to protect them but like. they're hero students and he's their teacher and he's tough and strict because he has to be to keep them alive. but then like--

it's morning and he's doing her hair. he's got the hair ties with the little baubles on them and he's doing her hair and she's been through so much crap and aizawa's never shown being demonstrably affectionate or enthusiastic around her the way that izuku and mirio are but like. he's been her dependable quiet shadow every time she's shown up in the manga so far, and he doesn't have to be strict or tough with her because what she needs isn't someone to teach her how to save others, it's someone that she can trust to be there when she needs, someone she can trust to do her hair with little bauble hair ties in the morning.

No bc why did Johnny just suffer non-stop for his entire fucking life - he was abused from a young age by his shitty dad, he saw his brother die and blamed himself for it, became disabled because of an extremely minor offense during a time period where being disabled was especially hard, was abandoned in an abusive hospital and disowned by his dad who should KILL HIMSELF, made a single (1) friend only to watch him die, had the chance to bring his friend back dangled in his face, the whole fucking ordeal with alt. Diego, fell in love and had 2 kids BUT THEN IMMEDIATELY his wife started to die, stole the corpse to heal her (going against his agreement with the only 2 people from the race he had left) but then his fucking son started to die instead, finally he died by getting his head crushed by a fucking boulder at the age of only 29????!!?!??!?!?!??!!

Like he just suffered constantly and never really won and never had the life he deserved but despite EVERYTHING he showed such remarkable resilience and KINDNESS throughout his life, he SAVED Lucy and his family and loved animals and hoped for things to get better despite it all and fought so hard and came so far and even missed and grieved for his ENEMIES because of how much the race meant to him and it was all destroyed at the end despite everything he did and his legacy continued on but they'll never know what we know and its been 100 years and he's been dead for so fucking long and has faded into an old folktale and all the characters from SBR are GONE and the world has moved on and time has passed and the inheritance of curses, burden and trauma through the bloodline and I miss Johnny so much and he unknowingly set in motion the curse of his descendants all to save his wife and then his son who he cherished despite being abused by his own father and how different would everything had been if he just received the love he deserved from his family and oh my god he's just like Jonathan and Jolyne and he acted out of pure love even if it went against everything he'd previously fought for because he is so incredibly human and even though he's gone and his descendants will never know him, his sacrifice and love and resilience persists through them and we know that but they can't and -

the Onikakushi Usoda scene is so interesting bc it has keiichi insisting that this is Out Of Character for rena, that this isn't the rena he's always known, that this isn't his rena - even though he's only known her for a few weeks - bc she did something that broke his image of her as the Ideal Cute Girl. he never brings into question who he is as a person to the reader, and keiichi here is the audience's surrogate. he never looks within himself or considers the unreliability of his perspective of the events surrounding him. this is very meaningful. you, as the reader, think nothing of how this boy was just screaming at his friend, how he'd grabbed her, and how he was hurting her while demanding she tells him everything he feels he's entitled to know, despite hiding things himself. the moment rena gets angry and snaps back at him though, that's actually a reason to be scared, a reason to feel as though something is inherently wrong. after all it's wrong for girls to present themselves as anything but available and nice at all times. anything else makes them ‘abnormal’. ‘hysterical’, even.

we focus entirely on the horror of rena's seemingly sudden change, so the harm keiichi is causing becomes a literal afterthought the same way it’s one for him, even though that’s the real horror of the situation. he's an unreliable narrator, and an example of how the narration can lie to you while criticizing you for taking it at face value. keiichi is SO self-centered in this arc that even when he learns that satoshi is a houjou, and is satoko's brother - he never stops to consider what this means for satoko or the club as a whole who actually knew him, it's all about Him and His Problems (HE’S LITERALLY DEAD FOR ALL THEY KNOW OF COURSE THEY’RE GOING TO AVOID TALKING ABOUT HIM ESPECIALLY WHEN IT MIGHT BE TRIGGERING FOR SATOKO IN PARTICULAR). keiichi’s viewpoint first and foremost is that he's THE victim. that’s the most important thing to him throughout this arc. even when mion tells him to drop the 'satoshi' act bc it's actively hurtful for those around him who are still grieving satoshi’s loss, all he does is hurt her the same way he’s been hurting rena.

we also have ooishi (mfw you dig into a girl's background and medical history with mental illness then talk about it to her classmate without her consent bc you want to use him as bait for your investigation!!!!!! THERE’S A REASON THE ONLY TWO ARCS WHERE OOISHI DOESN’T SUCK HARD AS A PERSON ARE MINAGOROSHI AND MATSURIBAYASHI WHERE HE FINALLY STOPS ACTING LIKE SUCH A FUCKING COP (HIGURASHI SAYS ACAB BTW REAL AND TRUE)) telling keiichi about rena, and even when it’s BLATANTLY clear that the three male friends hurt rena in some way and they are ashamed of their actions which is why they seemingly took a deal to not press charges together with the school so as to not have charges pressed against them, we have keiichi doubling down instead of stopping to consider that, maybe, she didn’t “undergo a sudden change” and attacked them before breaking all of the windows in the school for no reason whatsoever. maybe they did something to trigger her. he never stops to consider that, maybe, rena is actually a victim in the situation. “rena has a disorder that normal people don’t” is a funny line when taken out of context, but it’s just keiichi continuing to frame rena as Abnormal, Cursed, and Weird for being mentally ill. it’s especially clear in the door slamming scene, where it’s just rena trying to pacify a clearly stressed out keiichi with some light teasings, only for everything to backfire and for keiichi to react so violently...but, still, rena continues to stand outside, apologizing. she feels so bad. no matter how ‘monstrous’ keiichi’s actions become, she’ll continue to be there for him bc she understands.

the fact that tsumihoroboshi reveals that keiichi shot a little girl and he also damaged her eye the same way rena permanently damaged one of the boys’ eyes is literally the narrative chiding YOU AND KEIICHI for ever judging rena for the same crime he committed, and the reason they never elaborate on why rena did this is bc it literally doesn’t matter! you and keiichi aren’t owed rena’s background and the things she wishes to keep a secret to justify to yourself not treating her like a monster! not treating someone like a monster for their past and struggles with mental illness is just basic decency, they don’t owe you the details or justifications. tsumihoroboshi keiichi agonizing over the girls not knowing his admittedly terrible past and them being like "we don't need to know literally everything about you, man, if you want to keep this shit a secret, it's okay" is very important bc it’s fine to draw boundaries and it’s okay to keep secrets, you don’t need to tell everything about yourself and have others do the same thing back to consider them friends!!! secrets are important in friendship!!!!!!

this is also a good example of how you can make ANYTHING seem scary when it’s taken out of context. you can misinterpret anything you want when you’re missing critical information. you can ignore everything about a person you know and all the obvious clues that point towards the opposite conclusion if you want to demonize them and victimize yourself. if you want you will believe you’re right. that’s what keiichi keeps doing this arc every time he’s told something vague about rena by ooishi.

onikakushi after tsumihoroboshi’s recontextualization becomes a horror story told from the perspective of the actual ‘monster’, arguing its own justification and validating itself for hurting others while framing them as the monsters. the ones with the reason to be afraid and run away in this arc are always rena and mion, but they don't, not at any point - rather, they keep trying to reach out to him, bc while keiichi insists on seeing them as monsters, they never see him as one regardless of his actions, and keiichi isn’t a monster either bc despite the fact that his actions are fueled by his self centeredness and ego, it's also his shelterdness and own trauma and he’s still a victim struggling with psychosis. he deserves to be forgiven despite everything. there’s a reason onikakushi’s poem is the one about forgiveness, THIS IS WHAT RENA IS TRYING TO TELL KEIICHI. 

onikakushi is also really tragic from rena’s perspective especially with how higurashi is painfully aware of the reality wherein girls have to present themselves as nice all the time, they need to be this ideal to be palatable (rena’s whole Cute Schoolgirl thing is an act born from her internalized misogyny basically), and yet even when they do, they’re still susceptible to be subjected to violence based on the assumptions of boys and men. this is something that has been haunting rena for her entire life.

she came back to hinamizawa, regretting her parents’ divorce and hurting others, promising she'll never hurt anyone again, and promising she'll always be nice, no matter what happens to her, then keiichi comes along and everything seems fine, they’re friends and he’s kind even though he’s a little mean sometimes, but despite the kindness he showed initially, he still ended up screaming at her, grabbing her, getting mad at her for reasons she can't understand. that’s what her father did. maybe the boys in her school too.

rena is also being affected negatively by everything happening since the festival. she’s manic, she’s scared of falling victim to the curse bc she’s always felt like she’s being punished by oyashiro-sama for ‘sinning’ (leaving hinamizawa), and she has her own struggles with mental illness, but despite all of this she’s still trying so hard to be good, trying so hard to reach out to keiichi and she even explicitly says this at multiple points - that she doesn’t want the same thing that happened to satoshi to happen to him, and she feels so guilty for not being able to do anything a year ago when satoshi disappeared, bc she knows what it’s like to struggle with these things and how horrifying of an experience that is, but keiichi just refuses to let her help - yet rena continues trying, even as keiichi is bludgeoning her with the metal bat, she’s trying, she always will, bc she wants to grant him the thing she wasn’t given while struggling with the same things. she knows how scary it is and she doesn’t want anyone to feel that scariness. if nobody is going to forgive keiichi SHE WILL, but keiichi needs to forgive her too for things to begin changing. rena. rena. rena. i love you rena...

the whole point is that rena isn't some kind of monster who's going to indiscriminately attack others bc she's ~oh so crazy~ beneath the cute girl mask (tsumihoroboshi makes this blatantly clear with how rena only kills rina and teppei bc she feels like she’s been backed into a corner) and keiichi needs to stop being ableist (keiichi himself is pretty sympathetic despite this ofc, bc you understand from being in his head how he arrived at all of these conclusions). after all higurashi is about how mental illness is pathologized and demonized especially in women.

keiichi is constantly torn between two assumptions in this arc: 1) that his friends and rena especially are evil people who have been lying to him all this time or 2) that they’re being possessed by oyashiro-sama to do these things bc the curse exists, but isn’t the core of both of these assumptions pretty ableist? you shouldn’t vilify people for being mentally ill in such a way and you shouldn’t blame their actions on things such as Being Possessed and Being Cursed.

watanagashi also follows up with shion who’s very much a girl attacking and hurting others, bc of how she's been hurt all her life to show that ignoring the person she is makes everything worse for her even if it doesn’t justify what she’s doing. after all keiichi is content to blame what she’s doing on the ‘demon inside her’ instead of trying to see her for who she is. his thoughtless actions and words in this arc lead to much hurt for mion and shion. tatarigoroshi is him selfishly killing teppei in a such a way that he’s robbing satoko of any agency or say in her abuse without considering how this could impact her. his actions leave her even MORE traumatized, blaming herself for how everything turned out for the worst.

when you think of the syndrome as an allegory, keiichi breaking through the syndrome with the help of memory leaks isn't just him overcoming his paranoia, but also him learning to look beyond himself and see how others could be hurt by his actions and words etc etc, which is why tsumihoroboshi is about him atoning for how he hurt everyone and helping rena in much of the same way she was trying to help him in onikakushi. it’s him finally returning the favor. tsumihoroboshi is higurashi’s turning point, bc keiichi finally stops being such a casual misogynist, he stops demonizing rena and tries to understand her, he starts to realize that his struggles and experiences aren’t inherently more valid than the girls’ in his life, and he starts to listening to them more...

Opinions on what Nogami said about the Jellyfish having a hivemind? Is there any sort of biological fact it's based in? (All I can think of is how some jellyfish like the Portuguese Man 'O War is actually a collection of polyps cooperating to find food)

i have literally no idea. I know next to nothing about jellyfish and the jellyfish in splatoon have so many random tidbits of lore and culture that we only get random lore drops of in interviews. Like the fact they're a hivemind WHATEVER THAT MEANS, most of them don't speak, they just split parts of themselves off and clone to reproduce, one of them just started glowing one day and magically every other jellyfish could glow too after that (what), a lot of them Do Things just because they're mimicking things other people do et cetera.

i have no idea what the "correct" way to interpret the hivemind thing in canon terms would be, but I do have some thoughts on it. i feel it's more likely that jellyfish in general are a hivemind in the way that they can sense each other's thoughts and emotions and intent to some form, and their behavior and communication just greatly mystifies other species who can't read their body language at all and mainly communicate by speech, which jellyfish learn to do solely if they want to communicate with non-jellyfish, pretty much. I'd assume it's less of a hivemind in the "they all literally have the same brain" but more of a hivemind in the sense of they have extremely refined and detailed ways of probably chemical communication or something, so other species can't predict or understand their trains of thoughts at all and thus find it mystifying and confusing when jellyfish will randomly do things in perfect unison despite the fact that they didnt communicate about it whatsoever.

The main problem i have with jellyfish is that it makes it REALLY HARD to make jellyfish OCs because we literally don't know how they work. i like jellyfish and want to make ocs so badly and I will, but what the fuck man. Also jellyfish give me so many additional questions. HOW do birth certificates and IDs work in splatoon when people can just randomly clone themselves? Are the jellyfish recognized citizens? I'd hope so. They supposedly have money but do they get paid for all the work the NPCs do in spite of the game saying a lot of jellyfish just do things that they've seen other jellyfish and people do? i'd hope so. Do they have like, housing? Like what is going on. We know from Jelonzo and Jelfonzo and the like that jellyfish at least have their own individual will instead of just being a cog in a hypotethical singularity that every jellyfish is a part of. Or, well...

There's actually quite a lot of this in this interview. yeah, not something that's easy or clear to work with at all really. Interesting yes, but god help me

TADC EPISODE 2 THEORY TALK (its about Caine my beloved denture goober)

I've seen some people talk about the potential that Caine could be human since he said the thing about mixing humans and AI, and I absolutely refuse to believe those theories until given more information. I want him to stay as an AI and making him human would be weak let him be a goofy little AI that makes mistakes.

Caine is an AI as far as we know, and what do people do with AI? Train them off of infomation given. I'm not an expert with any sort of tech stuff but I have watched videos where people train AI to play mario kart and if you watch it you see that even with programming the AI doesn't know what to do at first and continuously makes mistakes.

I do think Caine might've accidentally lost or killed a human in the past thinking it was an NPC, but it was early on in his lifespan so he hadn't had the proper training to understand. So now he tries to keep humans and NPC's separated outside of missions just because its the easiest way to keep track of them.

If I had to guess why they might look similar to him it'd be because pretty much the only difference between the NPC's and the humans are their minds. Everything else about them is code, and as an AI that is probably one of the only things Caine is able to understand. The only thing that isn't code is the human minds, and if its not code then Caine is likely blind to its existence. He's aware that its there but he is unable to "see" and understand it.

TLDR even AI can make mistakes, we see it all the time and thats the point of AI is to constantly learn and improve. So Caine making a mistake does not automatically make him human. Or it could be entirely in his programming to not be able to tell the difference, be it mistake or intentional by the developer.

It could also be that due to the other AI programming becoming more "responsive" and essentially human-like he's concerned it could ruin his pattern recognition of understanding which is a human and which is an AI. Which could lead to an accident happening again.

Idk if the next episode comes out with information and I'm proven to be wrong and Caine MIGHT be a human then I'll eat my words ig. But I just think there are other possible explinations as to why Caine could make a potential mistake.

I feel like Cleo and Etho could be (unknowingly aromantic) friends with benefits in college who had an unplanned pregnancy (Scar) and due to societal/social pressures and internalized amatanormativity got a bit of a shotgun marriage over it, then said marriage inevitably starts to fall apart a few years later because neither of them actually ever wanted to be married or parents and are kind of romance repulsed by the whole situation on top of all the logistical stress and peer pressure of it all, so ofc they pull a "having a baby to try and save the marriage" (Bdubs) that went about as poorly as you can imagine before finally deciding "y'know what, fuck societal expectations" and finally get a divorce

Over the course of the next several years they have the whole messy exes thing going on LimLife-style, with Cleo single parenting and Etho kinda hovering about the whole situation awkwardly, before eventually things start to simmer down over the decade following their divorce as they settle into no longer being forced into a romantic partnership, Etho actually bes a decently supportive ex who pays child support and is available for babysitting and whatnot, and by the time Scar and Bdubs are becoming adults and the pressures of parenting are lifted to some extent, Cleo and Etho have fully divorced themselves from societal expectations, realized their aromantic, become amicable and eventually friends again, and then at some point - probably because of being tight on money? idk - move into with Grian and end up as roomies

Cleo and Etho are far happier back in their initial qpr friends-with-benefits relationship without kids or romance in the way, especially now that they're also older and more mature, and Scar and Bdubs are just sitting there like. We went through a whole childhood with divorce for this. You two just getting back together. wtf

Like Dullscythe by Porter Robinson is a big one I think they'd like. Go Find Out For Me from the Luca soundtrack... That kind of dramatic instrumental music. And Experience by Daniel Hope, I Virtuosi Italiani, and Ludovico Einaudi. Maybe they'd be into classical music in general too. That could just be me projecting, but I think they might resonate with some of the lyrics and the vibe in general. Like a calm/comforting vibe.

And then on the other hand. They might be an Angry Music kind of person too. This one's definitely me projecting but I think they'd like Mother Mother. Maybe rock music in general sometimes, I don't know. Or maybe not rock music, maybe more like alternative music...? Songs with like a bitter kind of vibe to them.
