The real dream career is haunted bookstore owner. “Haunted” in the sense that the people whose spirits have been trapped within the pages as characters come to life at night and just hang out until dawn. Maybe one of them is an incorrigible flirt and always begs to stay longer.
ooooo, big Night at the Museum vibes with this one!!!!
"Come on, please? Just this once?"
Calum shakes his head and reshelves two of the books that someone was looking at tonight, still holding all of their words because the inhabitants didn't decide to visit the shop this time.
"Please, Calum?" Michael asks again, pulling a book off the shelf and onto the floor like a bored cat.
"I don't make the rules, Michael," Calum sighs, finally facing him. He takes the next book from his hand, returning it to the shelf before heh can mess it up more. Michael grabs his hand in both of his before Calum can withdraw it, clutching it against the leather armor covering his chest. His hands are always warmer than Calum expects, delightfully rough and callused.
"Come on, Calum," Michael says, stepping closer. They're already plenty close in the cramped corridor created by the tall bookshelves on either side. Michael's eyes look especially green from this close, more beautiful and alive than Calum could ever imagine from words on a page.
"I won't even leave the shop if you don't want me to," Michael says, expression open and earnest. "I just want a few more hours with you."
Calum feels his cheeks heat. Michael is a flirt, he knows this, both from their own interactions and the book that Calum has read more than once. His flattery doesn't mean anything, but Calum can't help falling for it more each time a compliment or suggestive look makes his head spin.
"Don't you have monsters to slay?" he asks, pulling away to continue his reshelving. "Isn't there a world out there needing their protector back?"
"They can wait," Michael insists, taking another book from Calum's hand and holding it above his head. "The story will still be there tomorrow, but things change around here every day. I want to see it with you."
Calum reaches for the book, but Michael holds it back, making Calum stumble into him again. Michael steadies him with a hand on his waist and Calum suppresses his shiver. He can't see the windows from here, hidden behind so many of his books, but he glances towards them anyway, waiting for a hint of the sun.
"Calum," Michael says, softer. He has a way of saying Calum's name that gives it more weight than anyone else, like Calum's name means something precious to him. It figures that someone created from words would have a way with them like no one else Calum has ever met.
"I don't control the dawn, Michael," he says, giving up his quest for the book and resting his hands on Michael's shoulders instead. "I'd let you stay longer if I could."
Michael sighs, but nods. He tips forward, resting his forehead against Calum's and stealing all of his breath.
"I know. But, Cal--"
The book he was holding thuds to the ground, his shoulders disappearing from Calum's grip. He stumbles against nothing, catches himself on the bookshelf, and looks around the empty store.
Dawn has arrived again. Calum is alone.

Tips for naming Bionicle
I developed this system about halfway through making my headcanon, and it works wonders for me.
Pick some words that describe your character. Let's say we're naming a Toa of Light.
Now we need some words that have to do with light. We can scroll Wikipedia for some good ones: The Wikipedia article for Photon says this: "The name "photon" is generally attributed to Gilbert N. Lewis "
So, let's take some syllables from that name: Gi, Be, Le, and Si.
Next, let's hit up Google Translate. If we put "Light" in, say, Maori, we get multiple options. Some refer to "Light" as in "light-weighted", some refer to light as in Toa of Light. That's fine, we can use any of them. We get: Marama, Puhau, and Taimama
We pick some syllables from that: Ma, Ra, Pu, Ha, Hau, Tai, Ta. Now, we just combine syllables until we find a nice one. We can also change out or add vowels, but try not to double consonants. We could name our Toa something like:
Taima, Tayma, Besi, Besita, Besitai, Hausi, Hasi, Haasi, Purama, Pubema, Gira, Giira, Gesi, Gesii, Leba, Lera, Lerak, Lesira, Lesiro, Besiro, Besira, Besiron etc
Bionicle names tend to follow a few rules. There are exceptions of course, but most follow the rules:
Consonant-vowel combinations, which makes sense since that is common in Asian or Oceanic languages like Maori
Vowels can be doubled up, but doubling up consonants is less common and usually is reserved for minor characters or antagonists (Krekka, Skakdi).
Skakdi, Makuta, and other antagonist species tend to have more usage of V, K, X, and Z, especially at the end of the name. When you see those letters in protagonist names, it is often surrounded by a bunch of soft letters (Vhisola, Orkham, Ahkmou, Nokama, Kopaka, Kapura). Ta and Po are more likely to have more aggressive names, while Ga are more likely to have softer names. If an antagonist lacks this, there is usually an excuse (ex. Gorast has few aggressive letters, but her name also contains the word "Gore". Likewise Malum comes from Mal, the Latin word for "Evil".)
Protagonist species (Matoran, Toa) names usually end in a vowel or N, S, M etc. Occasionally they will end in K. They will almost never end in X, Z, or V. Agori and Glatorian are a frequent exception to this. Matoran and Toa who are more aggressive or who play more serious roles also are more likely to be exceptions. (Photok, Tuyet, Helryx)
When translating languages to find syllables, Maori, Hawaiian, and occasionally Swahili are my go-tos for Matoran and Toa. Greek and Latin work better for Agori and Glatorian, and their names often can pass as actual ancient Latin or Greek names.
EDIT: A commentor suggested Finnish as well! I tried that one and can attest that it works really well for this sort of thing.
And it's good to remember that what a big corporation does is very different from what you as some rando with a fanfic does. You don't have to stress too hard about avoiding certain words, like if a name is the same as some character from something or a brand name or coincidentally means "shit" in some language or "God" in another. The problem there isn't the use of a few letters for a character name, but the societal event of a corporation intentionally making money off of an overall concept.

pertaining to your worldbuilding—
Pretend your writing a movie or lit review/summary to get the ball rolling?
or begin with an explanation of how the culture etc affects one of your characters and broaden to a wider explanation of the culture at large from there?
You asked how to start lol idk
struggled to make this bare bones
ok so... it's a blend of high fantasy and some psychology deconstruction of what factors could create a "villain" (my oldest hyper fixation is just the concept of villains for some reason) that follows the life of malum necron, who is second line to one of a few ruling families of mortovia (named after mortimer the first, who found the region and supposedly hid in the mist to survive being killed in battle, i'll get to the mythological orgins in a later answer)
Basically: abusive/manipulative dad leads to internalizing alot of things which is made worse when war breaks out, and a plethora of things happen up until his country is conquered and he is executed only to be brought back due to various deals he made without knowing the consequences of, where he destroys most relationships he has in a drive to achieve some level of an accomplishment he never truly had an interest in outside of being expected to do
basically it's a deconstruction in fantasy villain psychology, but also in how people adopt to the perception pushed on them and how defining yourself through external forces can go horribly wrong
also a possible qpr type thing with another character
it's been in the works along time and i've had to re iron out what the main focus is multiple times, if that wasnt clear from the description, orginally it was going to be more about magic in general centering on the scholomance but i'v made that a shorter part of the book
the main setting is this highland subtropic oceanic climate (still figuring out plate tectonics) in a land space similar geographically to Iceland in terms of volcanic formation but more heavily forested (more woodlands and swamps) where religion begins and ends with the fog, which is this protective vaguely motherly entity that protects the native people from intruders, and when they die they “rejoin” her through being cremated and scattered, to send offering to the dead there are specific holes in the ground you burn things in. High corvid (raven) population due to one of the main plants being high in sugar and capsaicin (which birds can’t register) called blood berries.
the name malum is actually a double-entendre in the 'old tongue' as ma'lum means fog light, or light of the fog. meaning either blessing onto the land or basically a will'o'wisp which is a false prophet or omen trickster that leads people (mainly intruders on the land) to there doom.
Maj in the langague = she, her, m'am, woman, etc and ma = fog, má = mother. as the concepts are inextricably linked culutrally, although there isnt much of a concept of gender outside of feminine/masculine langague, as the 'old tongue' has mostly died out and is more around as a dialect of [english (havnt renamed that yet)] present day
and the invading kingdom of Daenia has a much different meaning for the word ‘mal’ than the people of mortovia, as they would have a more latin connotation of it as just 'evil', simplifying his character when viewed through a different cultural lense

I’ve had a thought. So in the Kingdom!AU, the Skrall probably won. Without Mata Nui, even if the Agori tribes had rallied against them it probably wouldn’t have been enough. The Skrall conquer southern Bara Magna and when the Battera make it pasts the mountains, well. This could be really angsty but The Kingdom always had sort of a ‘hopeful tragedy’ vibe to it. Like, no matter how bad things get ‘life finds a way’.
Maybe most of the main Glatorian survived. The Agori are enslaved but the Glatorian and a few others make it to the desert. They manage an alliance with Malum and the Vorox. Enemy of my enemy. And over the next 2000 years build a sizeable resistance. Probably get some discontent Skrall and Rock Agori on their side too.
The Battera may or may not be an issue? Tuma knows how to avoid them now but I don’t think he’d ever order his armies to just disarm themselves.
By the time the MU survivors make it to Bara Magna the two sides have probably been at a stalemate for a while. But it’s obvious that even if the fighting stopped immediately, the planet couldn’t sustain everyone for long.
Thankfully the Matoran are able to refuel their ships and make it to Bota Magna. Or something in the Valley of the Maze transports a team there. But they don’t stay, no.
In canon the Great Beings were supposed to build an additional giant robot to help Mata Nui repair the planet. It never showed so he had to reassemble the Prototype instead. My headcanon is that they did complete the Robit and have it buried somewhere under the Northern Frost. (That’s how I imagine the GBs would end up leaving Spherus Magna at the end of Greg’s GB Civil War arc). They commandeer the Rob3t and pick up all their friends before going off to find a new world to colonise away from the dying world and war mongers.
Sorta bringing the GSR concept back around to the abandoned colony ship idea.

mavity made me so annoyed especially since a way funnier joke would have been something like "mality" where like instead of gravity being named after the concept of having weight the natural law is named after the concept of being an apple (malum). in my opinion

Cider houses a stone's throw from San Sebastián: Astigarraga and Hernani
Tumblr media
If you visit San Sebastián during the first months of the year, enjoying an experience in a cider house is a gastronomic plan ideal. Towns such as Astigarraga and Hernani, located very close to the city of San Sebastián, become the perfect destination to immerse yourself in this Basque tradition. However, it is important to keep in mind that if you find an establishment called a "cider bar" in the heart of the city, it does not usually reflect the authentic essence of the cider houses traditional.
Tumblr media
The Basque cider houses, known as cider houses, are emblematic institutions that combine cider production with gastronomy and local culture. Towns such as Astigarraga and Hernani stand out for their concentration of these cider houses, attracting both locals and tourists. Below, we explore various aspects of these traditional cider houses.
History and origin of cider houses
Cider production in the Basque Country has deep roots, with mentions of Basque apple trees dating back to 1024. During the Middle Ages, cider was not only an everyday drink, but also an essential resource for Basque sailors. They entered the Atlantic waters in search of cod and whales, taking cider on board due to its nutritional properties and its ability to be preserved for long periods. Thanks to fermentation, cider retained vitamins that helped prevent diseases such as scurvy, a common ailment among sailors of the time. This link between cider and navigation was so significant that Basque farmhouses began to increase production to supply the crews. In the 16th and 17th centuries, cider also began to consolidate itself as a cultural and social element in rural communities. It was common for farmers to share this drink at celebrations and meetings, establishing a strong link between artisanal production and local identity. This phenomenon marked the beginning of the first cider houses, where not only cider was made, but also spaces for social gatherings that have lasted to this day.
Evolution of the cider house concept
Initially, Basque hamlets had winepresses (tolars) where cider was made. These spaces became places of social gathering, giving rise to the cider houses. In the 16th century, the construction of winery farms multiplied to supply a society with a growing consumption of cider. However, factors such as the introduction of corn and the decline in maritime activity caused a reduction in the production and consumption of cider. Despite these challenges, the tradition of cider houses has endured and evolved to this day. In the 1950s and 1960s, the gastronomic societies of San Sebastián began to visit cider cellars in towns like Hernani to taste and select the cider that they would later purchase. On these visits, it was common for visitors to bring their own food, especially meat, to cook in the cider house facilities, taking advantage of the available grills. Over time, this practice evolved, and cider houses began to offer their own menus, consolidating the current concept of these establishments.
Cider making process
Basque cider is made from native apples, selected for their balance between acidity and sweetness. After harvesting, the apples are pressed in the winepresses to extract their juice, which is then fermented naturally in wooden barrels. This process produces a drink with an alcohol content that ranges between 4% and 6%. Since 2017, the Euskal Sagardoa Designation of Origin guarantees that Basque cider is made with 100% native apples, ensuring its quality and authenticity.
The phenomenon of cider houses today
Cider houses have experienced a resurgence in recent decades, establishing themselves as social meeting places and tourist attractions. The season of little, which runs from January to May, is especially popular, allowing visitors to taste cider straight from the barrels. Furthermore, the opening of innovative establishments, such as Malum Rex in Astigarraga, the first cider bar in Spain, reflects the evolution and diversification in the cider offer, adapting to new tastes and modernizing the image of this traditional drink.
Typical cider house menu
The traditional menu of a cider house usually includes: - Starters: Cod omelette and fried cod with peppers. - Main course: Grilled steak. - Dessert: Idiazabal cheese, quince and walnuts. - Drink: Natural cider served with al little, directly from the barrel. This menu highlights the simplicity and purity of local products, fundamental characteristics of Basque gastronomy.
cider house tourism
Cider houses have become a significant tourist attraction in the Basque Country, attracting thousands of visitors each year seeking to experience the authenticity of this tradition. There are routes and guided tours that not only include tours of cider houses, but also of historic farmhouses where you can appreciate the artisanal cider-making process, as well as boutique cheese shops that complement the region's gastronomic offering. These experiences allow visitors to connect with local history and customs, making each visit memorable. In addition, the Basque Cider Museum in Astigarraga offers interactive exhibitions, workshops and guided tastings, allowing you to learn in-depth about the origins and evolution of this emblematic drink.
Behavior and etiquette in a cider house
Tumblr media
The experience in a cider house is marked by specific rituals and behaviors: - The txotx ritual: To the cry of "Txotx!", which is generally given by the cider maker or the owner of the establishment, diners approach the barrels to pour the cider into their glasses. This moment encourages social interaction and coexistence. - Standing dinner: The custom in the most authentic cider houses is to enjoy the food standing up, creating a more dynamic and social atmosphere. - Moderate consumption and one sip: It is customary to pour small amounts of cider into the glass, which are drunk in one gulp, leaving the glass empty before returning to the table. This gesture reflects tradition and ensures that the cider is consumed in its best state. It is important to actively participate in these rituals to fully enjoy the experience in a cider house.

uh.. oh god. Ocs.
im making them for a book concept and... God its getting out of hand. I gotta do a total of ... what, 25 of them?
Its a whole thing. Tell me if your interested in the full lore.
Ima show them off in waves! So first let's do the court of the cherry blossom:
First is vimal, the head member who represents purity within the council.
Tumblr media
then we got those below him:
Tumblr media
malum, the judge, who's name totally doesn't mean evil in Latin. He's probably the most plot relevant character.
Tumblr media
kocai, the herald. (Ignore the thing on the bottom, I forgot to change it). She loves skinks and speaks in sort of a southern/aussie accent..? Accent or like just way of speaking. Kinda is a jerk to everyone, but a funny jerk. She means well.
Tumblr media
then the last of the ones I have from the court of the cherry blossom is lehrer. Named after Tom lehrer, who fun fact, lehrer means teacher/teaching!
(I still need to make like, 3 more of these guys.)
Next post gonna be about the court of the spider lily, which is like the chaotic neutral guys

like I grasp the concept of malum in se and malum prohibitum but even some malum in se concepts I disagree are inherently evil. why would I gaf about grand theft auto? why is that evil? who says so?
maybe it's neurodivergency maybe it's maybelline but I honestly could not care less when people commit crimes that don't harm other living beings.

How about these questions for both Malum and Lashton? papercore*tumblr*com/post/79727566813 & shipmemes*tumblr*com/post/104268816242
Hi lovely! The second link didn’t work, so do you wanna link me in a message? I won’t mention you by name on the answer post if you don’t want me to! But here are the answers for the first set of questions :)
MALUM
How differently do they think of each other now compared to when they first met?
Even though I think they’ve always been super close, I think time has a way of making feelings even deeper and stronger. That’s definitely the case with malum I think.
What do their friends/family think of their relationship?
You just know that both sets of parents have gained another son! You imagine little 8 year old Calum being dropped off at the Clifford house and him wondering in like he’s lived there his whole life! And 15 year old Michael letting himself into the Hood’s house because he knows where they keep the spare key! I think that both sets of parents would have accepted their fate very early on, having two noisy boys messing the house up instead of just one!
How do their personalities/skills complement or contrast with each other?
Well Michael’s pretty loud a lot of the time but I think that’s kind of a front to hide his social anxieties, whereas Calum is the complete opposite. He’s quiet but so confident! I think they balance each other out in that way and kind of feed off of each other’s energy a lot.
What is their favorite aspect of each other?
Well aren’t everyone’s favourite part of Calum his chubby cheeks and his peachy ass? I don’t think Michael is an exception. Although he definitely loves Calum’s calm aura and his ability to make his loved ones feel very safe and loved with the smallest words and gestures.
I definitely think that Calum loves Michael’s pretty eyes and the way they sparkle when he smiles! He also loves his enthusiasm and the way he gets excited about little things like nachos and completing a level on the latest game he’s playing.
Do either of them have pet peeves about each other?
I’m pretty sure they piss each other off occasionally. I definitely think that Calum would get annoyed at how messy Michael is because I get the feeling he likes everything to have it’s place, whereas Michael is a ‘meh that shirt lives on the floor now’ kinda guy. I’m also pretty sure Calum’s lack of enthusiasm about cats could cause some tension!
How would each reconcile with each other after a fight?
Calum is definitely very sappy! He probably always tries to get back in Michael’s good books by buying gifts and ordering his favourite pizza! Michael for sure uses his natural charm and cute smile to get Calum to forgive him after a fight.
What would be their ideal vacation getaway together?
Hmmm, I’m not sure! Calum likes adventure and Michael likes to laze by/in pools so something that combines those two things would be perfect for them.
Think of a new way (AU, different situation, etc.) they could have met for the first time.
If they hadn’t met in school, they would have definitely met when they were a little older at concert or a pizzeria or something. They have so many mutual interests and shared loves, their paths would have crossed in one way or another for sure!
LASHTON
How differently do they think of each other now compared to when they first met?
I think their relationship is the same in most ways. Ashton’s always been so protective of Luke and it’s the cutest thing ever. They definitely party more together now than they ever have before though!
What do their friends/family think of their relationship?
Malum for sure get jealous of how much attention Luke gets from Ashton but on the whole everyone thinks they’re adorable af!
How do their personalities/skills complement or contrast with each other?
Well Ashton always sort of oozed confidence and coolness whereas Luke started off a little shy and awkward. I can definitely see how Ashton’s influence as helped Luke grow into the person he is today. I think they’re very similar now.
What is their favorite aspect of each other?
Ashton is just always talking about how he’s in awe of Luke’s stage presence and singing voice.
Luke loves Ashton’s protectiveness and how he just invests his whole heart and soul into everything he does and the people he loves.
Do either of them have pet peeves about each other?
I think Ash can be a lil grumpy at times, that’s gotta be annoying sometimes.
Luke is definitely a late sleeper which would be annoying to Ashton I think!
How would each reconcile with each other after a fight?
Both of them are sappy romancers, so flowers and fancy food all round!
What would be their ideal vacation getaway together?
Hmmm, I’m not sure… probably something similar to malum!
Think of a new way (AU, different situation, etc.) they could have met for the first time.
If they hadn’t met as teens then def in a leather jacket shop in their early 20’s!

fic moodboard concept in honor of @jbhmalumm birthday: the childhood best friends to lovers to exes to strangers to stuck in a storm together to lovers again malum au we all deserve
after not hearing from Calum for the past year, the last thing he expects is to see him at his front door, asking him if he could give him a ride to his parents' winter cabin, the same one he confessed his love to in a hushed voice when they were young and naive, the same cabin he broke Michael's heart in last november.
he'd love to say he declined, but he never could say no to him, not to Calum, not ever.
so that's how they find themselves stuck there together, a sudden storm preventing michael from coming back to his own place, a small apartment he could never call home cause that's only ever been a person, not a place. home was Calum, still is.
old habits are hard to break and over the course of the week they start to act like they used to, not only as the couple they were for five years, but also the best friends they were for twenty.
conversations are made, confessions are slipped out, a chance to start back again, and this time not making the mistake of letting go.
(Calum's cat, Lloyd, also joins the trip.)

A Dangerous Game
Guess who’s back. That’s right, me bitch. Here’s some cowboy Lashton content. That’s right. Wild West themed folks. And it’s exclusively on AO3 this time cause I didn’t wanna put it on Wattpad. (That shit is evil.) But now we’re back. This fic is like loosely based on “Cowboy Like Me” by Taylor Swift. It’s another chapter fic but I stg it’s different this time. Here’s the plot summary:
The luck of the draw did not come up in Ashton’s favor. But thank god he and Calum are on their way to a new job. Maybe he’ll make enough on Mr. Clifford’s ranch to make up for the heaping debts this cowboy’s racked up over time.
Meanwhile Luke’s willing to do whatever it takes to get on the road westward to California, even though it takes becoming a brothel worker. He doesn’t mind though. While he’s a romantic at heart hoping to find true love and freedom, at the end of the day it’s only a job.
Or
Ashton’s a broke cowboy with a thing for blondes, and Luke is a brothel worker with a weak spot for outlaws.

(jazz hands) HELLO! i have no sense of time and i was too tired to send questions when you reblogged this two days ago but i can send them now AND I WILL. so. please forgive me for the delayed qs. anyway, some fic questions: 5, 6, 21 for superhero malum. i love you!!! more jazz hands because idk i think they set a good vibe to start us out. okay bye!!!! xoxo bella
hello!! thank you for the jazz hands i love them :)) and no need to apologize, there's no such thing as delayed questions. time is fake!
5. Share a snippet that you’re proud of from an upcoming fic/chapter. this is from the dumbest wip i have created (possibly that has ever been created period? okay probably not but it's up there for sure) so here ya go sneak peak:
“I can’t believe we’re going to be doing all this work and we can’t even put this on our resumes,” Michael said, leaning against the wall outside the Los Angeles CIA office. “Like, I’m all for patriotism and all that shit, but it’s a little annoying that we’ll never be able to tell anyone about it.”
“I’m sure it’ll get leaked eventually,” Calum said, shrugging out of his suit jacket. He despised the California heat. “In 2020 we’ll be all over the history books, trust me.”
6. What are some topics you will never write about? well obviously i'll never write smut because i am me, but other than that? hmm idk i don't think i'd ever write anything involving any band members current or past partners because that makes me personally a little uncomfortable to write/read. i'd never write a teacher/student fic because that squicks me out. also probably never a ghost au, just because i don't think i could execute it well and also ghosts are the one thing that my suspension of disbelief doesn't work with for some reason. i'm sure i'm forgetting a bunch of other things but that's what's coming to mind at the moment!
21. If you were a character in superhero malum where would you fit in? this fic was in part inspired by some things in my life where i had to sit by while friends were dealing with very big things that i was very out of my depth in helping with, just like michael in this fic. (the reason this takes place in a bathroom is bc i wrote it not long after i had to sit outside a public restroom while my friend was having a breakdown inside but didn't want anyone with her.) but because i am me, i projected quite a bit on to both of them. michael got my worry for my friends (plus some other things) and calum got my whole "i should be fine right now" mentality as well as (a much more extreme) martyr complex or whatever it's called. most of the characters i write have pieces of me sprinkled in, so they're all me but also all strangers at the same time, which makes them fun to write!
