I made relationship charts for Jun and my other main Yu Yu Hakusho OCs! I'll probably make one with Kurama as well once I actually draw him (both Youko Kurama and Shuichi Kurama, because they have slightly different dynamics with him)

Some notes:

Jun is supposed to be 173 for all of them I just screwed up because I didn't have a ballpark height for him in mind until I was making these charts (I'm still not sure how tall I want him to be tbh)

Each chart is based off a lot of different factors, all boiling down to "how does Jun interact with these points in comparison to THIS person, specifically" and "what is Jun's mental state like at these points in time"

Atsuro's awkward level is less awkward more dense

Jun's jealousy on his chart with Souji is because, while he's really not a jealous person, he's overly aware of the fact he thinks Souji would be much happier with another human, rather than the traumatized demon his family has been put in charge of watching for over 200 years at this point.

Jun and Yuen's relationship is rather complicated (but the source for why is, hopefully, rather obvious). The chart isn't necessarily romantic in their case-- except for the fact Yuen mistakes the source of his jealousy as romantic jealousy. His "jealousy" readings are also shaded a bit strangely to show that he's slowly becoming less jealous now that he knows the truth.

The question marks in Jun and Yuen's chart mean that they're not really sure what they're feeling. Jun knows, without a doubt, he's not jealous of people trying to get close to Yuen or vice versa, but there's a part of him that's jealous over something, though he's not entirely sure what it is.

In that same vein, Yuen's trying to figure out why he feels the way he does about Jun and comes to the wrong conclusion that he's crushing on Jun, so his "horny" levels are him going "I mean, he is really pretty and mysterious and I maybe kind of want to sleep with him idk but I can't stop looking at him and my friends always joke about it so maybe??? I just want him to look at me." Like, he's 80% sure he's not horny but he also can't deny Jun is gorgeous and he's always looking at him and he wants to be looked at in return so fucking bad--

(Of course, that was when he was eighteen, early 20s. Now he's just confused whether or not he really wants to entertain the idea of sleeping with Jun even though they've figured out he is not, in fact, in love with him.)

I actually do have plans to write a Kuchiki Sibs Go on a Mission fanfic, which will be the next part of Heart is a Muscle after the one I'm currently writing. At the current rate I'm going, it might come out sometimes around 2025, assuming it doesn't kill me. Renji is in it, he's just back at home, running Squad 6 and doing his physical therapy and letting Captain Ukitake teach him to make drinkable tea. The plan, and in fact, the only thing that is keeping me from giving up on this idea before I even start, is that it is going to be at least partially epistolary, with letters going back and forth between my usual three main characters, and possibly an occasional one to or from Captain Ukitake or anyone else I feel like including.

It's been my thesis from the beginning that Kuchiki come in two flavors: (1) intense and prickly, who live by their own principles and have trouble connecting to others (Ginrei, Byakuya) and (2) charismatic and emotionally intelligent ones, who tend to smooth over the relationships between the 1s (Soujun, Byakuya's grandmother). Rukia tends more toward the first variety, and it's a big challenge for her and Byakuya to relate to one another on their own. Fortunately, Renji is basically a #2 Kuchiki in everything but name, and has been fundamental in Rukia and Byakuya building a good foundation for their relationship. The entire point of Unnamed Epistolary Fanfic is to see if they've done enough job of it that it can stand on its own. (I, myself, am still not entirely convinced)

That being said, over the course of writing these idiots for hundreds of thousands of words, I've realized that Rukia and Byakuya are substantially more difficult POV characters for me to write than Renji, and it gets even harder the less Renji there is to bounce them off of. I've actually written a lot of scenes of Rukia and Byakuya hanging out and doing things together, they're just sprinkled throughout my longer stories. Sorry, friend, the Renji is compulsory.

Everything is so much, all the time ToT and I feel entirely emotionally unraveled while I nevertheless continue to attempt to Meet All the Needs with increasingly diminished capacity. I want to walk into the woods and never return! Or maybe a lake. And I miss my friends on TUMBLR DOT COM and also my blorbos. I want to sink myself into something entirely and not come out, be that a fic, or a book, or a TV show, or Fire Emblem. (I mention Fire Emblem specifically because I have found that if I play Fire Emblem I do not eat or sleep much less work or idk, vacuum, so I am only allowed to play it if I have planned this well ahead of time lol. But the extremity of that is what I really want rn.)

Anyway, I still wanted to write this post because I had two thoughts I wanted to capture for posterity. Well, three: The first being that haphazardly collapsing into this doc for weird blitz sessions of writing fragments of conversation is functioning as my confirmation of life rn and it does something in my brain that makes me feel capable of maintaining corporeal form thank u R U K I A

#2: I've waffled about whether I want Kaien to appear in full flashbacks in this fic, which I've decided I do not. (He is technically in one, but it's narrated by Soujun, which feels sufficiently 'well, how much of Kaien is really being captured by this POV.') I think he should appear in summary--mentions of him, stories about him. There are some scenes from Rukia that are a bit more extended, but remain more summary/vignette than scene, which feels abstract enough to me, at least right now.

#3: This Renji/Rukia conversation I am writing right now is probably really five conversations in a trenchcoat. Part of it is probably the nature of the circumstances under which it was written, but I think more of it is actually intentional on my part. Like, I think they could have five different conversations at the same time and probably not blink twice at it. More accurately, probably, Renji and Rukia are carrying on four different simultaneous conversations with each other and Rukia is carrying on a separate one with herself. Whether I think it works, prose-wise, is a different story. I think it would work really well in a play! Like, I know how it could be staged effectively. Unfortunately, I am not writing A PLAY. So idk.

I…personally would not own an ogrin. DON’T GET IT TWISTED THOUGH. I DO STILL LOVE OGRINS. I also associate them heavily with the tag since there are so many fantastic ogrins (and ogrin fans!!!!) here!!! But they’re just not my type of pet and I just don’t love their design… But I also kinda do love it bc it is so wild and mismatched and could be interpreted in so many ways?? I’M SO SORRY. IT IS SO HARD FOR ME TO DISLIKE ANY NEOPETS AT ALL.

Hello Polynya! I wonder if you ever had a thought about this. Is there any interactions between Bleach chatacters that never been happened before that you're lowkey want to see so much? I mean, like the interaction that you think impossible to see since they literally have nothing to discuss lol. I'll share mine : 1) Ichigo - Isane (umm..they had an 'interaction' in SS arc. Yeah, Ichigo punched my girl Isane till she's collapsed 😭 But I'm hoping to see a better interaction between them in the future), 2) Orihime and Sternritter Girls (I'm kinda sure she and Meninas would get along well lol), 3) Byakuya - Uryuu (yeah they never interacted). I'd like to know yours!

I'm sorry, this is a thing that is utterly unappealing to me. The primary interest I have in characters is in their relationships with one another, in the heart born between them, so to speak. I respect the right of people who enjoy crackships, but I only enjoy them if there is an interesting narrative that brings them together. I tend to follow the entire Bleach tag on ao3, and I will often click on a fanfic that has a really wild pairing, just because I'm extremely curious as to how the author has come up with this, and in almost every case, it's just established relationship with no explanation whatsoever and I say, "Ah, this is not For Me," and gently hit "back."

I often desire to see two characters interact who are one step apart from one another and yet have never met--I would love a ChadIshi story where Uryuu somehow got to meet Chad's abuelo, for example. I enjoy writing Byakuya interacting with Matsumoto, because they're the most different people imaginable (aside from both being 10s), but they are both very fond of Hitsugaya. I spent several years obsessing about the parallels between Renji and Soujun (Byakuya's dad), before I finally found an excuse to write them in a fic together.

I guess I am also interested in characters who would have a good dynamic together. I accidentally wrote Byakuya and Yumichika interacting once, because it fit the story, and the result was one of the most delightful bits of dry, catty banter I have ever written. I also have a perverse love for Renji and Unohana interactions, primarily because he takes her ikebana class, but then I wrote an AU where he got (unwillingly) transferred to Squad 4, and after I thought about it for 3 seconds, their narrative juice was off the charts-- he just wants to heal his broken heart by learning to stab people, and he's just fallen into the hands of a captain whose special interests are both healing and stabbing. I got attached to Akon at some point, because I find him very relatable. I thought he and Rukia would get along together, so I slow-roll integrated him into my extremely long Renruki series, and now I stick him in lieutenant gatherings all the time. I do kind of crack-ship Hinamori and Isane, post-TYBW, but it's because I like the idea of Momo helping Isane overcome the loss of her beloved captain and realizing how far she herself has come.

Maybe the closest I have ever come to desiring a no-chemistry interaction is the fact that I always want Isane and Renji to hang out because they're both tall, but @bleachbleachbleach wrote a really excellent fanfic a few weeks ago that featured the two of them, and they made such a good pair of characters that I feel entirely validated.

I'm sorry, Anon, I did my best, but "they literally have nothing to discuss" is just about the best excuse I could come up with for why I don't care at all about a particular pair of characters.

I have been really stressed out and overworked and overstimulated (and then I make it worse by going on Tumblr and further overstimulating myself because I am an idiot), and all around just completely exhausted and I do not presently know how to make these things less true. But this morning I woke up before my alarm, so I just started writing.

Kensei’s chapter this time, not entirely by conscious decision, but I feel good about what came of it, especially since Kensei is someone I didn’t really think about prior to this fic, so I feel like I need to put extra work into trying to do right by him. 

Today’s spoils:

Two rogue Hitsugaya lines from a completely different chapter, written while I was putting the groceries in the car (from Akon’s POV, for the obligatory Akon quota)

Swapped the positions of the [unwritten] Kira and Ichigo chapters, which feels like a genius move right now and I hope doesn’t mess up the narrative in ways that were obvious when I first ordered these things and that I’ve since forgotten

Part of a Kensei & Rose conversation that is so long it’s making me realize Kensei’s chapter is about to be a billion words and for what??

In any case, here is part of that conversation, because every camping trip needs a ghost story: 

"Did you know Shiba Kaien?" Kensei asks.

"Not any more than you, I imagine. The Shiba were never over-interested in us, nor us in them. Different circles."

"How many circles can there possibly be? Isn’t that nobility’s whole thing, flitting around circling each other?"

Rose’s lips harden into a thin line. A delicate subject. In the twenty-something months since their return to Soul Society, Rose has not returned to his family home. It’s unclear to Kensei whether this is by his choice or theirs, and he isn’t going to ask.

Rose disentangles himself from his personal issues. "Shiba Kaien became head of the Shiba clan very young," he says. "As a figurehead, mostly—they certainly weren’t going to put the fate of a Great Noble house in the hands of a child, much less that child—which was all the better when he joined the Gotei. Kuchiki aside, you’ll notice they usually don’t do that. Out of respect for the notion of 'lifespan.'"

"And the—"

"Shihouin Yoruichi has always done whatever she wants."

This last, Rose infuses with a note of finality, though he’s already shown his hand. Rose knows Kaien’s circle better than he cares to tell. But Kensei never tries to take more than what is freely offered, and he’s run with Rose long enough to know there won’t be more. Shiba Kaien, crib notes edition: A figurehead and then a shinigami, growing up hiding behind Ukitake’s skirts. Dead.

Hisagi had taken the name Shiba Kaien very seriously when Kensei had briefed him on the mission. Evidently, he’d felt some type of way about the man, but it wouldn’t be the first time Hisagi had held weird reverence for nothing. That was kind of his thing.

"I think—" Rose says suddenly. Kensei’s eyebrows arch.

"I think what bothers me most is that we’ve been presented with a premise, correct? Shiba Kaien is dead, and Kuchiki Rukia is the next best thing. That’s typical Gotei slapdashery, of course. Nothing terribly unusual. But how is it, do you suppose, that everyone else from the Shiba Kaien deployment is dead now, too?"

Kensei snorts. Why, does he suppose? It’s impossible to wonder why any given shinigami is dead. He’d just buried bodies for a month straight—not that anyone was counting. There’d been a war. It’s not like it was the first war, and it won’t be the last one. People die, soldiers quicker than most. That’s it.

He says, "You feelin’ superstitious?"

"Long dead," Rose presses. "That was my captain who went. You’ll recall the circumstances of my promotion. And the 10th, too—that was before our little Incident. Their captain and lieutenant both. Kuchiki Soujun is dead—I heard it wasn’t long after us. Then Shiba Kaien and the Teranishi girl, Miyako—apparently she and Shiba Kaien wed, by the way—and your two, Hanabi and Hoshino. Also dead."

That’s who’d gone, then. Kensei remembers them. Hanabi had been killed on patrol—it would’ve been a few years after this Shiba Kaien thing. Officially, a drowning. The report was light on gory details but there’d been some insinuation Hanabi had been in pieces first, and only afterward had he gone into the water. Hoshino, Tousen killed.

"You looked all this up."

"Of course I looked all this up," Rose says, folding his arms. "Kyouraku would be a fool to trust that we trust him."
