What is a Resbang, anyway? Here’s the cliffnotes version:

Authors write and complete a fic with 10k words minimum (and can apply the year’s theme if they wish. This year’s theme is Season of the Witch, to interpret however you desire). Any pairings/gen, any genre, OC-friendly, crossovers cool if SE cast is dominant.

Artists chill a bit until CLAIMS NIGHT. Claims work through blind selection and are assigned first come, first serve. Artists complete at least 1 piece of artwork inspired by their claimed fic. Any media goes: traditional, digital, musical, culinary, crafty -- sky’s the limit.

With the help of (optional) betas, the groups then polish their projects for the grand reveal during posting season, which will start mid-February.

- What is a Big Bang? A Big Bang is a fandom event bringing together writers, artists, and consumers alike! They used to be much more popular back in the early 2010s, but from what I can see, they seem to be making a comeback!

- Why Hatchetfield? I’m a huge fan of the Hatchetfield Universe and Team Starkid as a whole, and I have had great experiences with the Soul Eater Resonance Bang, so I thought that it would be fun! (And if anyone noticed, yes, I pretty much directly stole Resbang’s set-up for this. Having done a couple other bangs as well, I can confidently say that it is the best set-up I have seen, by a long shot. Don’t improve on perfection!)

- What are the requirements? For authors: A Hatchetfield-focused fan fiction that is a minimum of 6,000 words. This can be any pairing, any genre, any plot, any characters - and crossovers and OCs are allowed too, we just ask you don’t get too lost! For artists: At least one fully completed work of art per fic you are partnered with. “Work of art” is a little vague - of course there is traditionally or digitally drawn art, but you could also do a physical work of art, you could cook, you could do music! For betas: You must use your skills for good and help out authors in the ways they need it - beta-reading, editing, soundboarding, so on! For all: You must be willing to provide an email, and check it. This email will be shared with your bang partner(s), as well as this blog, but it will never be posted publicly - it’s just for communication!

- What are the restrictions? Nothing! Go wild, fam! Just make sure that all works are properly tagged! Keep in mind that this also means that spoilers are allowed! If you want to keep away from spoilers from a certain part of the Hatchetfield Universe, have no fear! If you’re an artist, you can note down if you want to stay away from spoilers, and if you’re a writer, you can put a note in your artist summary, and so people can avoid each other as need be.

- Can I use a fic/art that I have already made/posted? Sorry, nope! If you have just mentioned the idea and not talked about it in detail, and it’s not actually written and posted anywhere, then you can! Also having something already written is also okay - the point is it can’t have been shared somewhere. These works are supposed to be a surprise!

- Am I allowed to talk about my fic/art in public? Nope! Your work must stay a secret until posting! The exception will be official promos posted on this blog (which will be set up during the third check-in). However, if you’re dying to talk about your piece, there is a time and place; we have an official Discord that you are welcome to join! (It’s not required, so if you don’t want too, no worries!)

- How do claims/match-ups work? If you look at the schedule, you’ll see that there is an event listed called “Artist Claims.” On the day of the first author check-in, all authors will provide an anonymous artist summary of their fic, complete with warnings, that will be put on a list and shared with the artists and betas. The artists and betas will then have a week to look over the list and make their own list of their top five (at least), and on claims night those will be emailed back to us. Then, match-ups will be made on a first-come first-serve basis. Every fic will get an artist! 

- Can I be matched up with a specific person? Nope! The artist summaries are anonymous, so you most likely will not know who your partner is until you get your official match-up! However, if you have a specific person you would like to not work with, you can email us privately and we’ll see if we can work it out.

- What if I want to do art for more than one fic? It is possible there will be more than one round of claims, which will be done in much the same way as described, so this is totally possible! But if there aren’t enough people who want to have a round two or three, we may not do it. But remember you can always make fan art!

- What if I want to write more than one fic? Who am I to stop you! But know that you still have to meet the 6k minimum for each fic. Don’t bite off more than you can chew! For your own sanity, authors won’t be allowed to write more than two fics on their own.

- What if I want to co-write/do an art collaboration? That is also allowed! You just have to make sure you’re signing up as a group rather than as an individual. There will be a place for this during sign-ups.

- What if I need to drop out? First, dropping out may not be your first step! If you’re a bit behind on a check-in, email us ASAP! We can give extensions! You only get one extension per work (so if you’re an artist for two fics, you get one extension for each fic).  If you do need to drop out, that’s okay! Things happen! Just let us know ASAP so we can work things out with the rest of your group.

- If I drop out, can I still post my fic/art? Yes, but know that you won’t be able to use this fic for future bangs. But there’s nothing stopping you from posting it as normal!

Sin-Eaters borrow the term Memento from the Latin phrase memento mori, “remember that you must die”. People have been finding or making tokens by which to remember death for nearly as long as they’ve been dying, but to the Bound they are something more. A Memento is a physical object with a Twilight presence, transformed by the resonance of death into something that’s no longer entirely of the living.

Death Trinkets

Most Mementos are ordinary objects that were transformed by playing an important role in someone’s death, or by acting as one of a ghost’s Anchors. The Bound have never been able to figure out exactly what turns one object into a Memento while another remains untouched; one grisly murder might result in the murder weapon itself becoming a token of death, while another death, just as violent, leaves the murder weapon unaltered, but creates a Memento out of the porcelain doll sitting on the shelf next to where the victim died.

Mementos can also come from more unusual sources. Objects brought back from the Underworld often become Mementos, resonating with the purpose for which they were returned to the world of the living. With effort, the Bound can even create Mementos, infusing an object of their own creation with Plasm and deathly inspiration. Geists can also create Mementos, through their own demise: a geist that’s torn apart or otherwise ended leaves a physical token of their existence in the form of a mask, and certain Ceremonies can create Mementos by trapping a ghost in one of its Anchors.

Some Sin-Eaters claim to own even stranger Mementos: the bones of a Kerberoi, bottled souls, undead hearts, and more. Such stories are exactly as fanciful as they are impossible to prove, but if nothing else they turn a common Memento into a great conversation starter.

Enduring Treasures

Mementos, like Sin-Eaters themselves, are equally solid to physical matter and Twilight ephemera. They’re also damned hard to destroy — they’re never damaged by accidents or environmental hazards, and even deliberate attempts to destroy them require overcoming an extremely high Durability. (Yes, that means a Memento umbrella can be used as a shield, and a Memento leather jacket is roughly the equivalent of a Kevlar vest.) The Bound can feed a Memento to their geist for a full refill of Plasm, but that’s considered a tool of last resort.

Aside from their Key, which we’ve already discussed, all Mementos have a supernatural effect of their very own — from a marble that always rolls toward the closest exit to a bootleg record pressed onto an old x-ray film that plays new songs by dead rock stars, Mementos warp the world around them. Sometimes they’re obvious, sometimes subtle; sometimes they’re powerful, sometimes they don’t seem to have a practical use, but people do strange things for a taste of magic, and Memento cults are known to spring up around charismatic individuals or especially remarkable Mementos. Even the Bound are known to be impressed by a well-curated collection of Mementos, artfully arranged by theme or expressing the sheer variety of death.

Greater Mementos

While most Mementos have a weird, but ultimately minor, supernatural effects, rumors abound of those with truly staggering power: A watch that stops you from aging as long as you wear it. A perfectly-preserved Roman trireme that can sail to any port in the Mediterranean in one night. A date book that tells you exactly when, where, and how you’re fated to die.

No one can seem to agree on what makes these Mementos, if they even exist, so powerful. Is it because they’re associated with famous deaths, like Caesar’s assassination or the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper? Is it because they’re very old, like the 430,000-year- old skull of the first known murder victim? Or is it just sheer dumb luck and random cosmic convergence?

Whatever the truth, even the rumor of a greater Memento can set the occult world on edge, and an actual, verifiable greater Memento is the sort of thing krewes and cults go to war over.

Just to whet your appetite, here are a couple of example Mementos from the book. (The usual disclaimers about this being non-final, pre-editing text apply.)

The Cold Harbor Diary

Key: Stillness

Description: A small, bloodstained, leather-bound book, filled with notes written by a Union soldier during the American Civil War. Despite being made in the 1860s, it looks almost new. The pages are a uniform cream, the blood on the cover barely dry. The entries begin cheerfully, but become increasingly nihilistic and distraught as the diary goes on. The final entry is uncharacteristically short and to the point: “June 3. Cold Harbor. I was killed.”

Effect: The body of anyone who dies holding the Cold Harbor Diary cannot be identified. Fingerprints, DNA, dental records, and more all fail. Even the deceased’s loved ones can’t do better than “It sort of looks like him, maybe, but it’s hard to tell.” This effect does not extend to the deceased’s ghost.

The Drowned Phone

Key: Deep Waters

Description: A banged-up smartphone a few years out of date. Drops of water under the screen and behind the lens of the back camera create weird distortions in the display and in any photos taken with it. Despite that, the phone functions perfectly, though the operating system refuses to update to the latest version.

Effect: The phone can make calls and access the internet from anywhere, regardless of reception, provided it is at least partially submerged in water (which doesn’t affect it the way you’d expect). Audio sent this way is raspy and distorted on the other end, but usually still comprehensible. The phone can even make — and, according to one previous owner, receive — calls from the Underworld.

Next Time

Power that goes unused is little more than bragging rights. Sin-Eaters use their powers in service of their fellow dead and in opposition to the forces that would exploit them. So, next week will we learn about Reapers, or about ghosts?

(this is not an rp starter, it is an info block that I had to start this AU)

A loud bang echoed from the bathroom as a fist conected with the wall. A red haired male gave a low growl as he pulled his fist back for another swing. it was his senior year in the Death Weapon Meister Acadamy and Mark still didn’t have a weapon partner. At this rate he may not find his match and that wasnt good for a meister. He let out a strained groan and sat down, rubbing his face with both hands. "Get a hold of yourself, Mark...Felix found a match, hell, Ethan and Tyler matched up! There has to be someone in this city I can match up with..." he mumbled as he rubbed his eyes with his gloved palms.

He then looked over his hands and sighed. He remembered the day he solidified this look for himself. Red and dark burgandy accents covered most of his outer coat which hugged his front, open in the front to show he still had the school uniform underneath. Behind him to long banner like scark ends flowed back and ended in a gradient to black. He would ocasionally use these as an actual scarf. His pants where like bugandy leather that clung to him like a second skin.

His second year he hand made his gloves, slightly padded so that his hands wouldn’t constantly blister and burn when he atempted to use a weapon he didn’t resonate with...which was every weapon so far. Sure he could temporarily resonate with one to get some use out of them but soon it would burn his hands and cause him to drop them. He would appologise profusely afterwards but he never felt good about it. He gave a low sigh and got back up. "Maybe I’ll find one soon, if not, I might head to west Europe after this...heh." He gave a small smirk as he walked out of the stall and headed to class. ____________ "Hey, septic toothpick!"

The green haired boy flinched away from the insult. This was his first year at the Death Weapon Meister Acadamy and he as nervous as all hell. He had known how to turn into his weapon form for a long time and had used his own blade for many uses from cutting branches and fruit down to cutting meat for his family. Being a spear ment he could also slip into small areas to hide from bullies...which unfortunately came to the same academy. "Didnt know they let tooth picks in!" Jack bit his lip and moved to sort of hide behind a couple other students, which was hard, considering his hair color. 

"I am a spear, not a tooth pick..." he mumbled, keeping his head down. Another student with ocean blue hair put an arm around him and rubbed his back. "Hey, don’t listen to him. You be the best spear you can be." Jack looked at the other and smiled, relaxing a bit. "Thanks...uh...whats your name? I’m Jack." "I’m Ethan! I’m a weapon just like you, a battle ax." "Awesome!" "SENIOR INCOMING!" Ethans head snapped up as the croud split down the middle and everyone lined the sides of the halls. "Seniors?" Jack asked, looking at his newest friend. "Yeah, the seniors of the DWMA are a big thing. They all have near perfect resonance with there weapons and can fight off any Kishen....except..." Jack was about to ask what he ment till he saw them.

A group of students, walking the open path, there resonance nearly vibrating the air as they passed. One taller meister with a beenie looked at Ethan and smirked, holding out his hand. "I’ll be back, Jack. Thats my meister." With that, Ethan turned awway then performed a perfect cartwheel then a flip towards the waiting meister as he began to glow, shifting to an ocean blue battle ax which the meister caugh, spun and put on his shoulder perfectly.He then walked on next to the others. Jack blinked in suprise at how perfecly meister and weapon formed a perfect bond and wished one day he could have a bond like that. 

As he watched the seniors walk by, one in particular caught his eye...a red haired meister towards the back, head down as if looking at his own unique outfit and not where he was walking. Jack bit his lip as he watched, curious about the lone meister...untill he looked back at him. Chocolate orbs met ocean blue.

And time seemed to stop.

What's Resbang?

resbang, short for resonance big bang, is an annual event in the soul eater fandom that takes place over the course of the fall semester. writers who sign up are challenged to write a complete 10k+ fic; artists (or musicians or fanmixers or amv makers) who sign up are semi-blindly partnered with one of the fics and are to produce at least two complete works of art (or music, etc) for their assigned fic! it’s an exciting chance to make friends in the fandom that you may never have met otherwise, and some of my best experiences have come from doing resbang.

Kilik was constantly reminding me that customers came to our shop for a “friendly, quiet atmosphere” with the unspoken implication that I was basically creating the opposite. From my very first day, he’d been incredibly supportive of my “new start” and “budding career” and even though I didn’t give a shit about many things, he gave a shit about me and always had. While I knew I was a bitch, I knew the value of having someone who’s gonna watch your back, and I wasn’t fucking stupid- I was there working instead of sitting locked up in jail because of him, and I wasn’t about to spit in the face of someone I owed. From what I’d seen, that was the kind of thing that got you a bullet in the back of the head.

My Top 50 Anime Series List

Upon request, several people have asked me to make a list of my top 50 anime for curiosity’s sake or a gateway to get into the wild, wonderful world of Japanese animation. I’ve seen some great anime series through the years, some horrendous failures, and mostly shows somewhere in the middle. Here are the 50 that I have personally enjoyed the most. The only rules of this list is that I’ve had to have seen the show (of course), only one per series (one Fate or Gundam etc.), and they have to be a series. Movies will come later... On that note, here we go.
