Questioner 1: Do all Soulcasters risk turning into the element or is it only those using the device?

Brandon Sanderson: All Soulcasters have an affinity but the ones using the device are locked down much more than the Soulcasters who are Knights Radiant.

Questioner 1: So they are protected from being turned into--

Brandon Sanderson: Oh no they-- I wouldn't say protected... *clarification* Protected is the wrong term but that event, the savanthood and how it affects them and things like that is much less pronounced if you are a [Knight].

Questioner 1: Or is that counteracted by the healing as well?

Brandon Sanderson: Healing doesn't have to do with it because-- in cosmere terms there's nothing wrong with your body, your spirit is actually drifting, and so it's not hurting you physically by what's happening with the magics. So it's not the healing but if you have an active bond with a spren it takes a little different path. Let's just say, in simple terms--

Questioner 1: You are not losing body parts to smoke.

Brandon Sanderson: Yes, you are not losing body parts to smoke. 

Questioner 1: What timeframe does it happen for the normal Soulcasters then?

Brandon Sanderson: For normal Soulcasters? It takes-- I mean, you've seen it happening in the books. We are talking [about] a process of years even decades, depending on the person. It happens to some--

Brandon Sanderson: It depends on how often they Soulcast, and it depends on the person.

Does soulcasting involve physically traveling between realms? I’m trying to figure out how Shallan got to Shadesmar if she’s not an Elsecaller. I re-read the Kaza interlude, which describes soulcasting via soulcaster as a “familiar sensation of being drawn into the other world” but her eyes are closed, so I’m not sure if she’s physically there as well.

If radiants are mentally ill glow in the dark people (not my term).

Their mental illness should have some impact on their power.

Someone with anxiety will always have their blade at the ready. I can just imagine shardbearers drunk on mix of coffee and Redbull.

Or a person recieve a romantic confession and boom! Sword out. Especially if someone is trained to summon on reflex.

I do tend to like the trope of "one or both characters faking or being disingenuous about their role in a relationship but ending up being shaped by it anyway"—and yes "fake dating" and all its variants are included in that! but! that is not the end-all-be-all; the possibilities here are endless. for example:

fake siblings

fake bodyguard/person they are protecting

fake parent/child

fake prisoner/guard

fake royalty/servant

fake rivals

fake divorced

even just. fake friends please I love fake friends

Soulcast

cant believe we havent made proper post talking about Soulcasts yet !

Soulcasts is the “magic system” of Wish You Goodnight , however many (such as Bliss) not consider it “true magic” due to how minor and restricting it is

Land of Vicissitude use to have “true magic” , things like fire spells , healing , teleport , levitation , things youd expect in most fantasy worlds , but whats left is just soul

Soulcasts have several rules .

1 Soulcast per soul (meaning 1 per fauna most time , if have multiple souls , means same amount of Soulcast )

Generally arts n crafts / creativity / creation related

cannot harm , fix , or destroy

temporary . last either few seconds to a week

don’t have life / mind of its own

Soulcast kinds not passed down genetically , is based on what the soul and mind wanted or is

some examples of Soucast is: drawing pen , paint , clay , growing flowers , mist , fireworks , glitter , etc.

Idea of Soulcasts is base on idea of irl magicians and fantasy illusion magic .

Idea of making temporary art and how other people bring fun and ideas to the world

And it is fun thinking about magic system that based on idea of art mediums mixing

—— While reworking Soulcasts to more fit updated story , we were frustrated that it felt never used

Original idea of Soulcast is that it unique to user and what it does is “equal exchange” , for example if Soulcast fire breathing , it in turn burns your mouth . if its to create , it could cost limbs

this kind magic system cool and unique , but it was never used because WYGN Isnt About equal exchanges or magic battles . this kind magic system wont benefit story that more about characters living life and sharing each others world .

it was extremely hard figure out how to fit this into story without feel artificial

remember , magic systems should work With story and benefit it , not just be cool idea in vacuum

Soulcast was severely reworked to be harmless and art related as thats what WYGN is about and benefits from

idea of creating art and making things together , and how temporary it can be

we wanted magic system feel “lack luster” “not really magic” to go with idea that “true magic Was lost” in world

we also wanted turn idea that magic system need be “battle related” on it head , that magic system can just revolve around art and not violence .

think idea of what magic could be can greatly expand if not seen as just “for fighting / defense “
