WIP Wednesday

Thank you to @emeryhall and @thewholelemon for the tags. Special thanks to EVERYONE who shared advice or encouraging words on my last post. I am actively putting all of your words into practice and just taking a break to fill my cup, which looks like reading fics, baking treats, and exercising.

This upcoming chapter is on the shorter side and contains one of the bigger reveals of the fic (two if you are a super close reader like @cutestkilla), so I can't post too much.

Instead, I'll pull the curtain back on the writing process as @bookish-bogwitch did and share a picture of a note I made on the outline for a future chapter that I find amusing.

In the spirit of bait and switch, here are two lines where someone will gasp in chapter 4 and it will not be for sexy reasons...

Baz closes his eyes, gasps softly, and nods. “Basil!” she gasps. “What happened in the woods?”

so I changed the whole thing pretty much BUT.

Her animal is still a forest owlet, but her fruit is mangosteen. I changed things to fit mangosteen (quick drawing of mangosteen depicted on the left; ignore my attempt at a star fruit next to it. I was brainstorming)

Name: Mew Mango (not mangosteen cause that's too long to say :p) (slightly confusing) (I guess the whole thing is fine) (idk) (if anyone feels compelled you can create your own name I'd love to hear one) (I'm not being sarcastic)

Weapon: Da-mango-maru (instrument is a damaru)

Attack: ribbon mangostaan-u storm-o (or smthn)? (unsure on how well storm and the damaru match. but maybe the sound of the drum could be like rain?)

I just tried my very first sour cherry scone and guys; I completely understand Simon Snow's obsession with them. They are delicious, not too sweet, and have a beautiful flaky texture without being super dry. I got mine from a local farmer's market but if I could have them every day like Simon, I'd never go back to any other breakfast pastry.

This post has also made me realize that I either look like Simon ghostwriting something about sour cherry scones, or Baz finally trying one and seeing why his boyfriend has a side relationship with these things.

Tea for (more than) Two

So, in a delightful turn of events, I recently got together with some pals who are also TOTALLY NORMAL about Carry On. And we did our best to replicate afternoon tea at Lady Ruth’s house. And I thought it would be kinda fun to share the results (and some recipes, which are at the end under the cut). So, here they are, featuring:

Scones! (Sour cherry, ofc.)

Cake! (Chocolate with Chocolate-Orange Buttercream featuring a super respectful remembrance, Lemon Drizzle, and Classic Victoria Sandwich.)

Lavender Earl Grey shortbread cookies!

Finger sandwiches! (Egg & cress, Lemon and prawn, Caprese on focaccia, and Coronation chicken - all on freshly baked bread.)

A selection of teas! (Including Simon's Sour Cherry looseleaf blend, Simon Snow Tea, some proper English Breakfast, and of course Earl Grey.)

A giant slab of butter! (Fancy butter.)

A basil plant!

A crucible!

A sword through the table!

Special cameos by a Watford goat (wings hidden) and Prof. Minos (tiny fluffy edition)!

Sadly, no tea trolley, but we did our best to provide glamorous staging anyway.

It was pretty much the best, guys! Highly recommend. Recipes (including dairy-free versions for many treats) below the cut.

Chocolate cake with chocolate-orange buttercream (dairy-free)

Using this recipe for the cake, and this one for the frosting (instructions at the end for a chocolate variant). A hot tip is to use egg whites instead of aquafaba (they whip up much faster) and of course to add orange zest, per AWTWB ch 89.

Lemon Drizzle Cake (dairy-free)

Using this recipe, using vegan butter and replacing the self-raising flour with some flour/baking powder/salt ratio from the internet. Garnish with Kellogg's ICEE Cereal or any other weird cereal you saw at the store and couldn't resist trying, for a little visual flair.

Classic Victoria Sandwich (dairy-free)

Using this recipe, substituting butter with vegan butter, milk with a non-dairy milk alternative (ideally soy but in this case oat milk was used), and replacing the self-raising flour with the same flour/baking powder/salt ratio from the internet as above. Regular old granulated sugar can be used in place of caster sugar. Garnished this with some black raspberries, but any attractive fruit (or weird cereal) could be used.

This recipe from the Joy of Cooking does the trick! Use the GOOD butter.

Thank you for the cake Kusuo! I’m actually a big fan of sweets like you, I find that sugar intake helps with my thinking, which lets ignore the fans thinking this might be a Death Note reference but genuinely I do enjoy things like cake, pastries, I’m not a particularly big fan of scones though. That’s a big off topic though. Black Forest with Oreos is quite delicious. Did you know that Hydrox is the original crème filled cookie from 1908 and Oreo later took the idea in 1912 and actually surpassed the popularity of Hydrox and due to the fact information wasn’t spread and easily fact checked in that era, it was heavily believed that Oreo was the original and Hydrox was the knockoff. Also, Hydrox was discontinued in 1999 but it’s actually available again. I want to try them actually, when they were petitioning to get it back, they said ‘nonconformists don’t eat Oreos.” Not that I think I’m a nonconformists, actually I suppose I’m fairly conformist since I will in fact be eating Oreos. Black Forest cake comes from Germany, actually. It’s believed to come from the fifteen hundreds, around the time chocolate was introduced to Europe I believe? It’s traced back to and believed to come from the Black Forest in Germany which is known for sour cherries. The cherries on this one though is actually maraschino cherry, which is actually a marasca cherry from Croatia! They’d distill the cherry to make a liqueur and were incredibly expensive! If I remember correctly, America started this new law of prohibition where they banned the sale of alcohol and in bars, but not the consumption. Which led to speakeasies and places where people paid a monthly amount of money, and they served alcohol but never actually sold it. Since the possession and consumption wasn’t a crime, only to sell and distribute it. Oh, so to be able to produce the cherries cheaper, they started making a knock off version, a professor in America, I believe it was Oregon? Originally Oregon was called Ouve Água, then called Oragua. If you played the Oregon trail games then they actually called it Oragua still. If I remember right, it means cascades in Portuguese, based on the navigator who traveled there. Oh, so the professor in 1938 discovered a method with Queen Anne cherries to remake them. Black Forest cake is a German cake but German chocolate cake is actually an American cake! Did you know the history of birthday cakes stems back from Greece?
