Movie trailers have gotten out of hand...the Spellbound trailer makes zero reference to the fact that it is a MUSICAL with songs by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Because...why mention the Grammy and Emmy-award-winning songwriters when you can just name drop half a dozen John Lasseter films? He's not even the director.

I'm trying to watch Athena P lore videos because god are they entertaining and so funny. But here's some shows/movies I would love a lore deep dive on and why:
Inspector gadget reboot - the 'romance' between penny and Talon was so confusing yet endearing. Also, loving how chief Quimby just Disguises himself just to give gadget a misson
Total drama - not only was it a huge fan of gross out humor and has our overlord chris mclain, it literally introduced me to the ' bad boy x good girl' trope before ripping it out and taking a character ( who was literally perfect with another) and forcing them together due to aesthetics.
Transformers: robots in Disguise ( 2015) or Transformers prime - two shows that have fanbases debating ( seriously), each saying why each respective show is better. But other than that, both are fine for what they are and gave me two crushes that I hold dearly.
Mia and me - a fairy show that's not only animated but live action? With the main character having an ability to talk to unicorns? And with one of her bullies DISCOVERING HER SECRET LIFE??
Ben and hollies little kingdom - super wholesome and I love how the humans coinside with the fairies
Max and ruby - there's a tiktoker who made a whole series on why ruby was annoying. Need I say more?
Trollhunters and the spin off 3below - honestly from what I remember, I loved the stakes of the show and how cool the Armour the main character had. Regarding the spin off, loving how the bully I think was into the alien girl
Max steel ( not the 2000s one. sorry) - Max having to come up with the most unbelievable excuses as to why he has to go is cliche but also kind of funny? And the fact that the company Max's dad works for has lore as well is kind of interesting
Dino squad - I actually remembered this show through a cringe compilation of all things and had to add it. From the theme song, to the plotines, to the fact that I had a crush on Laruzo even though he was obviously queer coded ( his Dino form was cool though)
Jem and the holograms - the I am a giant song from the misfits lives in my head rent free. Also, jem practicing trying to reveal to that one guy only from him to yell at her is funny to me
Lolirock - same with jem as revolution is iconic as well as the villians. Plus, why is was eventually taken off
The tinker bell movies - forgot I was supposed to mention movies as well ( sorry). But I love them and how the fairies each have their own abilities ( as well as different kinds). From pirate fairies to winter fairies, it's really cool.
Barbie: a fashion fairytale - I love all barbie movies equally but this...this just takes the cake. What other movie will you see ken making a child cry, fairies with attitude, rotting dresses, and a roller skating aunt?
Zoom (2015) - the trailer showing a scene of the main character and her character arguing is honestly what made me want to watch it ( I haven't but I'm planning on it)
Super hero squad - kid me was laughing my butt off when falcon married his bird. So...
The little prince movie - I didn't even read the book but when I saw that the old man had died, I was emotionally devastated, especially after listening to all his stories which inspired the main character to go find the prince UGHHH
The book of life - is it cliche? Yes. Is it like coco? Yes. Do I like that in the end, the main boy has to sing a guitar version of creep to calm down a bull? Absolutely yes!
Epic - josh hutcherson, beyonce, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny knoxville, an enemies to lovers storyline, a snail, a royal guard having a love for the queen, the enemies being bugs, and ANDD a nerdy dad. That's it.
Rise of the guardians - I absolutely love it followed jack and his arc of being seen and when he finally is, the kid and him are just so excited! Also, the fact that a lot of people are simping for the Easter bunny is a testament to how many people will call anyone sexy.
Daniel spellbound - wanted to add this because there's an awesome creator ( cough cough @bonkalore) who's made an amazing au out of this show and I wanted to see what you thought of it and your theories
Bonus options ( just random one's I think could fit): the rainbow fairies series, Lego friends, the complicated life of Claudia Christina Cortez, sonic underground, drama or sisters ( but any book by rainia would be great), Junie b Jones, stoked, barney, goddess girls, glitter force ( that's what I remember it as), invisible sister, a monster in Paris, Maya and miguel, and Martha)
If you want anymore, let me know!

Big-ass Netflix animation news drop yesterday, ahead of Annecy and the release of ULTRAMAN RISING... Netflix is on a lot of shit-lists for a variety of things, including their careless race towards making more animated features but expecting them to be cranked out like it's a factory process or something... But I will say, the feature line-up they revealed yesterday sounds like banger-central. Too bad most of them likely won't see a physical media release, though.
WALLACE & GROMIT feature #2, VENGEANCE MOST FOWL... Coming later this year, featuring Feathers McGraw from THE WRONG TROUSERS... The hype is real.
The last half of 2024 will also be when Netflix debuts Skydance Animation's SPELLBOUND, that long-gestating fantasy picture from SHREK director Vicky Jenson with new Alan Menken-Glen Slater songs... I guess LUCK nuked whatever partnership Skydance, John Lasseter's current studio, had with Apple, although their new show WONDLA is debuting on that platform.
Skydance looks to follow up SPELLBOUND with TANGLED director Nathan Greno's POOKOO, another fantasy tale with otherworldy critters. Only a matter of time when we find out RAY GUNN, Brad Bird's retrofuturistic sci-fi noir whose development history dates aaaaall the way back to the mid-'90s, comes out.
Also curiously, prior to these announcements, Disney Animation director Don Hall (WINNIE THE POOH, BIG HERO 6, RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, and STRANGE WORLD) has joined the ranks at Skydance. Another director who worked under Lasseter at either WDAS or Pixar, now working for him again. I'm guessing he didn't particularly enjoy directing his last two features at WDAS under Jennifer Lee's stewardship, thus - much like Nathan Greno and Rich Moore - went back to his old pervy boss. Skydance Animation undeniably has a lot of top talent there, and directors of past animation blockbusters, but it really just sucks that it's run by Lasseter. And apparently he's running it just like he did with Pixar and WDAS, just as toxic. He micromanages projects once more and buckles directors under his mandates, like Alessandro Carloni, who was supposed to direct LUCK... But these guys are his favorites, so I presume they'll do fine over there.
Next year sees the release of IN YOUR DREAMS, from directors Alex Woo and Erik Benson. Two total opposite brothers who go to dreamland and try to convince the Sandman to save their parents' failing marriage, sounds promising. We already knew about THE TWITS, and also THE IMAGINARY, which debuts in a few weeks. Three imaginary friends movies in one year, coincidentally the year FOSTER'S HOME FOR IMAGINARY FRIENDS turns 20... I refuse to process that. I was so big on FOSTER'S back in the day, when I was 12 years old. Speaking of TV cartoons and adaptations of those, THE PLANKTON MOVIE is also on the boards for 2025, continuing the Netflix SpongeBob movie series running alongside the theatrical ones.
I'm also very happy to see that Sony Animation's wild-sounding K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS, from directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, is underway and will be debuting sometime next year. Sony Animation also revealed a new HOTEL, I mean... MOTEL TRANSYLVANIA series, and are still at work on the GHOSTBUSTERS animated series as well. Since this was all for Netflix-only projects, not a peep on the GHOSTBUSTERS animated movie that's also on the rails. I wish DEMON HUNTERS was heading to theaters, though, that's such a bonkers-looking film that would work great like that. Much like their MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, but that got re-routed because of COVID, so I get that.
Curiously, no word on THE SHRINKING OF TREEHORN, a book adaptation from director Ron Howard. First thought to be a 2023 release, Netflix picked up the picture in 2022 and didn't set a date... Maybe it's gone the way of EMBER and other canned Netflix animated movies? Or a new date will be inked eventually? If it's aiming for 2026, then that'll explain the absence.
I'll keep my eyes on these as they get closer, but my top picks are VENGEANCE MOST FOWL and K-POP: DEMON HUNTERS.

I should be going to bed rn, but i wanna do some verbal thought dump Nordegrim headcanons cause I crave fics for them
Tumblr media
Nordegrims come get your food (more like midnight snack):
- I headcanon that Stacey becomes an English teacher in the future as she gives off English teacher vibes. She used to be the one to go to bed first as Neil would be trying to write a screenplay or playing video games but once she became a teacher, they swapped as she has a ton of essays or tests to mark. Neil will carry Stacey up to bed as she’ll fall asleep at the computer
- I love the headcanon of Neil just saying what he’s thinking so before they date and are like in the weird zone of being friends, he calls her pretty and Stacey just goes 😳. He also randomly says on like their first date that he loves her
-they have made out in a Tim Hortons. You cannot change my mind about this. Neil is a pda fiend. He cannot go five minutes without holding her hand. He’s the living embodiment of this image:
Tumblr media
- Because of Neil, Stacey likes Alfred Hitchcock movies from the 30s and 40s. Her favourite is Spellbound btw (I’m totally not projecting here/lie)
-When Stacey loses at a video game, Neil will grab her controller before she can throw it
- they play animal crossing together. Neil likes fishing and collecting nicknacks while Stacey likes talking to the villagers and collecting paintings for the museum. She also has beef with Tom Nook.
-they also play wii sports and goof around with making miis of their friends and play baseball with them
And that’s all I can think of as I’m getting eepy. Also my phones battery is at 31% now and I don’t want it to die in the night.
Maybe I’ll add more in a reblog or new post in the morning
Good night!! :]

Feeling kinda bad for R because she's excited for Y2K and the movie is not it at all 🫤 There are some fun scenes and the comedy timing is good, but the overall narrative is so bad and shallow. The whole thing goes downhill after the first act...
And this is basically her only movie this year so we're gonna have to eat it up, I guess 😮‍💨
I’m more excited for Spellbound. This has been a great year for animation and it might get a sequel if it pulls enough numbers on Netflix.
I’m sad to hear about Y2K but truthfully, does she give a good performance? That’s all that matters lol.

SATIVA ROOT Muster Thunderous Groove For ‘Kings of the Weed Age’
~Review by Billy Goate~
Tumblr media
Artwork by Armin Schweiger
Many of us have seen at least one silent movie in our time, probably Nosferatu or maybe even the prophetic Metropolis. On a whim, I decided to take a chance on another silent film one night, and settled randomly on a one-reeler called An Unseen Enemy from 1912. The plot concerned a home assailed by a veiled gunman, and what made it special was long sequences without any title cards. Actors would be talking to each other and I'd be perplexed wondering, "What are they saying now?" Then the most remarkable thing happened: my imagination started to kick in. It was as if I were viewing something happening in a neighbor's house across the street and my mind was scraping to fill in the salient little details.
A similar thing happens when I listen to instrumental metal, whether shorter tracks (The Death Wheelers) or long form compositions (Clouds Taste Satanic): my imagination becomes invigorated in the absence of words. Music, after all, is a storytelling medium. With the right solo, a skillful musician can have their listeners spellbound. Now that's a little harder to do with slower modes like doom, but as many of us have learned from experience there are revelations to be had from investing eartime in the slow 'n' low (think Dopesmoker).
Before us stands 'Kings of the Weed Age' (2023) by SATIVA ROOT from Salzburg, and knowing their point of origin I have to conjecture that there's something special in those Austrian waters, as I've encountered more than a fair share of stellar bands there (Savanah, TarLung, and most recently psychedelic garage rockers High Brian and The Heavy Minds)...not to mention that Salzburg is Mozart's birthplace.
Tumblr media
While Sativa Root is a far cry from Wolfgang Amadeus, they are similarly masters of their medium. The record begins with bells ringing ominously through the city square, and one imagines this all happening under an eerie sky lit only by the moon glowing through pregnant clouds. Attention is fixed upon the apocalyptic sounds of The Riffer reverberating across cobbled streets.
Sliding strings grimace and groan, accenting the soft strumming of "Weedotaur." A pensive melody is heard and then two-minutes in crunchy, downtuned machinations are turned loose. Riff and rhythm converge for a theme that's vaguely familiar to the genre, though bands always do it a bit differently. Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard's "Les Paradis Artificiels" comes to mind, and Sativa Root likewise has a flair for dramatic, even worshipful, moments.
"Megalobong" is dark and towering, with low-end notes hammering out a brooding melody. At 3:15, the mood shifts. The band sputters and fumes, then gets all frustrated and grindy, like an animal scratching off pesky little fleas. By 4:30, smoke is released to emphatic notes of ultimate doom. Out of this the guitar speaks, turning into a furious, glistening monologue backed by some excellent drumming.
Stoner humor is evident in many of the song titles, including "Assassins Weed," where the bells return accompanied by windy streets and the gentle desert plucking. By the end of the two-minute mark, the bass swells with girth, drums burst with sulfur and fire, and twin guitars weave and dodge like rivers of lava. The longest of the six tracks, this near 13-minute behemoth had me gazing back at the album cover art -- both are quite ominous.
Sativa Root and Doomed & Stoned have a history spanning 10 years, when we reviewed their first EP. Then in 2018, I did a big piece on their debut full-length Oneiroid. It's good to have them back (now a four-piece) for a second full-length, which boasts six tracks for about 55 minutes of runtime. Their music is more than just heavy, it's consequential. And, yes, it would make a damned fine soundtrack for many a silent film.
Give ear...

Animation Night 150: INU-OH
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! Tonight we celebrate ✨Animation Night 150✨. I never imagined I would still be running without pause for that long. In a few weeks it will be our third anniversary. They still haven’t banned me!
Tonight our subject will be Masaaki Yuasa, one of the most brilliantly inventive directors in the whole medium. Yuasa was the very first director I wrote about on here on Animation Night 12, and once again on Animation Night 28, which between them gave a pretty good survey of his works - works such as Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Devilman Crybaby, Kaiba, and Night Is Short Walk On Girl to name a few favourites. However, since then he’s gone and released another movie! Inu-Oh spent a long time touring the festivals, and then a while longer going around cinemas. I wrote this at the time I saw it...
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, seriously you gotta - Masaaki Yuasa totally outdid himself, the choreography and flow if it is just incredible and the whole concept (a biwa hōshi and the cursed mutant son of a noh performer invent glam rock to tell the story of fallen Heike soldiers) is both so out there I struggle to imagine how they came up with it, and yet a perfect evolution of the themes Yuasa explored in his films so far.
So… I was completely spellbound the whole time, it’s one of those films that really rekindles the firey love for animation after days of drawing tiedowns lol. The ideas for movement, the creative shot choices, the solidity and weight of the animation, the visual motifs, the music behind the animation… gaahh you guys it’s such a good movie that ties together so well. So glad to finally get the chance to see it. And you can trust that the very minute it becomes available on blu-ray, or at least the very week, I’ll be screening it on Animation Night.
Well, that day has come! I’ve got the movie and I’m gonna show it to ya.
So what’s this all about?
Tumblr media
Perhaps you remember when we watched Naoko Yamada’s brilliant adaptation of the Heike Monogatari. This is the story of how the Taira or Heike clan, who once effectively ruled Japan back in the artistic and peaceful Heian period (literally ‘peace period’!) of 794-1185, got too ambitious and were annihilated by their rival Minamoto clan in what would later be called the Genpei War, bringing an end to the period of peace, and putting the samurai and their shogunate in ascendance.
You don’t need to know much more than that to follow Inu-Oh, which is set in the years after the fall of the Heike. The story was transmitted forward through history by the biwa hōshi, blind biwa-playing itinerant monks who would go about singing stories.
Tumblr media
However, Inu-Oh isn’t really about strict adherence to actual history, as you’ll see! The premise is essentially that a radical young biwa player Tomoaru, blinded as a child by an ill-fated attempt to fish up the sword Kusanagi, encounters the mutant son of a noh troupe, who is haunted by the ghosts of the Heike soldiers who perished in the war. The effect of this haunting is to give him a strange body with long, distended limbs; he takes on the name ‘Inu-oh’ meaning ‘King of Dogs’. Inu-oh’s father rejected him, leaving him an outcast, but in Tomoaru he finds another outcast who doesn’t give a shit how he looks.
Our two boys quickly become best bros and driven by the ghosts’ call to tell their stories, invent biwa-based glam rock, creating a sensation as they sing untold stories with elaborate, pyrotechnic-laden preformances of songs such as ‘Burial Mound of Arms’... but in so doing, fall afoul of the new shogunate, as Inu-Oh’s father cannot stand to gain a rival in his rejected son.
Tumblr media
Inu-oh is full of some of the most inventive and charming animation of music performances I’ve ever seen. I struggle to imagine how they came up with the ideas that drive this film. It feels like it’s constantly in spellbinding motion. The rougher lines and more detailed designs are a departure from the Flash style that Yuasa’s later films mostly used, much more like the ones in Heike Monogatari, but the young international animators at Science Saru pull it off incredibly.
There’s been much discussion of how to interpret Inu-Oh. Is it about Yuasa himself and his weird career? Is it about the struggles of art in general? There’s a nice review of it over on fufuro; for now I will just say that it reminded me why I love animation. (Also it’s gay as hell. Y’know. Just putting that out there.)
Tumblr media
Along side this, I’m going to be bringing back a Yuasa work that I feel like we gave an unfair shake back in the day - MInd Game, animated at Madhouse in 2004 at the very beginning of Yuasa’s rise. Known for its incredibly varied and experimental animation, Mind Game follows a man who fails to intervene against an attempted rape and dies, but after a brief meeting with God, drags himself back to life and begins a surreal journey as he flees from the yakuza. Much of the film takes place inside a whale, where they meet an old yakuza who has lived there for decades, following how the characters and their relationships evolve (which is to say they go fucking nuts) - before an absolutely batshit final sequence as they attempt to make their mistake.
Mind Game notally marks the beginning of the collaboration between Yuasa and the brilliant Shinya Ohira, who provided some of his warping, expressionist rough pencils. It’s got a lot of naked people being flung around, wild smears, bright colours. The simplified designs allow the animation to be all the more creative. It’s hard to find anything to compare it with, really! Mind Game doesn’t feel like a Madhouse work. It only somewhat resembles Yuasa’s later works. If anything it feels like something you’d find on Catsuka at 2am.
So I think it’s about time I revisited it!
I’ve learned a great deal more about animation and its history since I wrote about Yuasa before, and later I’d like to write a more substantial account of his works. But right now, it’s about time we started! Animation Night 150(!) will be going live now at twitch.tv/canmom, with movies due to start in about 15 minutes - I’d love to see you there to see what is probably my favourite movie of 2022! (even though it strictly came out in 2021). see you soon~

An Unhealthy Childhood Begets an Unhealthy Life (Mr. Enter: The Unauthorized Biography)
Content warnings for this part: pedophilia, drug abuse, child abuse, and bullying
Tumblr media
Pictured: Keith Rauh and Jennifer Rozanski, c.1992
Sometime in 1991, then-18-year-old Keith Rauh was smoking marijuana with his friends in Chicopee Memorial State Park, enjoying the day's good weather, when they were approached by a group of girls from their high school. The group included a girl named Jennifer Rozanski, who was 15 at the time. Keith reciprocated her advances, and what followed was an unhealthy and illegal relationship.
Despite this, Keith would remember this relationship as a positive time in his life. Decades later, he would muse about it in Soul Bond, his autobiography and memoir:
We were young, and I remember her telling us, we had to be quiet, or her parents would hear, and they would get in trouble! (...) We had a whirl wind romance from the very start, and we both fell deeply in love. We were almost in separable at first. Little did I know then, this relationship, would effect me, my entire life. (...) I thought at the time, we were high school sweethearts, destined to be together forever. We had a lot of good times together! - Soul Bond (Life, Love, and the Paranormal), Keith Rauh
It was Keith who introduced Jennifer to addictions she would retain for the rest of her life, including alcohol, tobacco, and opiates. It was Keith who got Jennifer pregnant with her first child in late 1991. It was Keith who chose to leave the relationship soon after.
We were young, and she got pregnant. At this point, things had gotten rough, and we were arguing a lot, like a reaction, of two young star-crossed lovers, having to grow up, way too fast. (...) I don't know why, still to this day, but something inside me, said runaway, and run like hell. This was right before, my first son was born, and I was gone with the wind. - Soul Bond (Life, Love, and the Paranormal), Keith Rauh
Keith stayed in Chicopee until he graduated from high school in 1993, at age 20. He moved to another city soon after. Eventually, he was arrested for drug possession and spent several years in jail. It would be over a decade before Jennifer would hear from him again.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA
Jonathan Joseph Rozanski was born at Baystate Medical Center on July 21, 1992. Because of Keith's abandonment, Jennifer decided to give the boy her own last name. Jennifer spent the next three years raising Jonathan with the aid of her parents. While Enter credits them as being a positive force in his childhood, they were insistent that Jennifer got married after she turned 18, because the family was Catholic.
That pressure might have been the catalyst for Jennifer's sudden engagement to Brian Plourde in 1995. The two met when Jennifer was 19 and Brian was 21, and Jennifer was soon pregnant with Brian's child. Because they were both Catholic, and because of pressure from Jennifer's parents, they married almost immediately.
Brian decided to keep his last name, while Jennifer decided to hyphenate, changing her name to Jennifer Rozanski-Plourde. Brandon Plourde, John's half-brother, was born in January 1996. Over the next 4 years, they had 2 more kids, girls named Ashley and Emily.
Tumblr media

At 2 years old, John saw The Lion King at the movie theater - his first movie, and one of his earliest memories. He was spellbound by the experience, and it most likely played a significant role toward his developing interest in animation. Meanwhile at home, he would watch The Lion King and Aladdin on repeat for days at a time without getting tired of them.
This might have been an early sign of him being on the Autism spectrum, which he wouldn't discover until he was an adult. As a child, he also had several sensory and social issues, many of which persist into adulthood. Some of these included:
A sensitivity to the texture of scotch tape, receipts, and newspaper
A dislike for ketchup, describing it as spicy
A sensitivity to the taste of mint, to the extent that he refused to brush his teeth because of it
Difficulty engaging with other children, and inability to make eye contact.
Jennifer's parents soon bought a separate house for the family to live in. Enter would talk about Brian's role in the family years later.
I don't measure my success in money, most likely because my step-father always measured his success in money. And nothing about that man was successful. Literally pregnancy-trapped into a marriage with three kids he had no qualms with saying that he did not want in a house owned by his wife's parents. - Today I learned that Pluto is a Planet, John Enter
Tumblr media
Pictured: Our Lady of Hope Catholic School
In 1997, John started school. He attended Our Lady of Hope, a K-8 Catholic school in Springfield, MA. Shy and focused on his own interests, he hated the time he spent there even as early as kindergarten.
Some subjects, like reading, he excelled at - later claiming that he learned to read before he even started school, and that he read dictionaries for fun. Others, like math, were such a struggle for his teachers that he was forced to teach himself. Enter later confessed he would cheat on, and rush through, assignments.
While attending kindergarten I learned that I got to go to the play area when I was finished with my work. I learned to cheat at the race, cutting corners hoping that I wouldn't be seen. - Today I learned that Pluto is a Planet, John Enter
John also faced what he believed was unfair treatment from his teachers. He also talked about this later in life.
Kindergarten teachers learn from Marx. The best way to teach sharing is not taking a toy away from someone who is content and give it to the other kid who just looked at longingly. - 30 Things I Learned in School, John Enter
That same year, John joined his school soccer team at the insistence of his parents, where he played goalie. He got a participation trophy at the end of the season, which he keeps to this day as a memento of the now-closed school.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Jonathan's participation trophy, in 2018
The trophy also serves as a memento of Jonathan's birth name. Soon after, his name was changed to Johnathan with an 'h'. This might have been John's decision, since he took pride in his name going forward, believing that it was clearly the correct way to spell a name which shortened to John.
John spent his early years of school socially isolated, in part because of his shyness and social difficulties caused by ASD. This led to him developing some odd habits, including talking to himself in class and singing on the bus. This might have played a role in the bullying his faced as he went into second and third grade.
John was verbally abused for his odd behavior. That included a time when he blurted out the Kim Possible theme song on the bus, and another time when, though the exact details aren't clear, he was mocked for having a crush on an imaginary friend. The verbal bullying slowly escalated to physical abuse, like an incident when he was stuck with a "kick me" sign. When he complained to his parents, they told him to ignore the bullies, and that they would stop if he did.
One day during recess, a frequent bully approached John and started making fun of him. When he refused to respond, the bully assaulted John with pepper spray he brought from home. John cried and ran to tell a recess monitor, but because of either misunderstanding or disbelief, she ignored him.
He never told his parents what happened, and when his school found out about it days later, their solution was making John repeat third grade to separate him from his bullies. He was left with trauma he'd keep for years, pointing to that day as the start of his disillusionment.
I repeated the third grade to get away from the bullies that had plagued me from the start after an incident where my bully decided to pepper spray me in the face. My eyes were watering and I told the teacher watching the schoolyard, and I was ignored. And I saw how the world worked. - Today I learned that Pluto is a Planet, John Enter
Tumblr media
Pictured: John, Brandon, and one of his sisters, c.2002-2004 (from a profile picture, highest quality available)
While John's school life didn't improve much after that, he found comfort in his siblings, and in entertainment like cartoons, books, and video games. John loved the Wayside series of books by Louis Sachar, and read them to his brother and sisters. They quickly became comfort books for the four. John was also a fan of the Goosebumps series.
John and Brandon played video games together, with some of their favorites being Spyro The Dragon, Sonic The Hedgehog, Goof Troop, Twisted Metal 4, and Halo: Combat Evolved. John also played the game My Little Pony: Friendship Gardens - his first experience with the franchise. The four also watched cartoons together, like Courage The Cowardly Dog, KaBlam!, and SpongeBob SquarePants.
It was around this time that John's interest in writing and video game design started. He wrote out narratives and ideas based on video games he played, including Spyro The Dragon and Baldur's Gate, and eventually decided he wanted to be a video game designer. When he told his school and parents about it, they told him it was unrealistic as a job, and encouraged him to go to college for something more sustainable.
Tumblr media
John's relationship with his parents was strained to say the least. Jennifer struggled with addiction during this time, and sometimes fell asleep with a cigarette in her hand while under the effects of Oxycodone, relying on John to wake her up. In one specific incident, she left the gas stove on, and John only noticed because he got up to use the bathroom.
Jennifer allegedly made John work a paper route only to pocket his money for her habits, claiming she was saving it for college or his birthday. The amount stolen added up to hundreds of dollars. John developed a habit of spending money immediately because of that.
Brian, meanwhile, was abusive toward John and unappreciative of his other kids, talking openly about how he didn't want them. He sometimes gave John tasks he didn't know how to do, then mocked him when he did something wrong. Whether he did it intentionally or candidly is unclear.
Brian allegedly beat John with a leather belt when his grades were low or when he refused to do his homework, to the extent that John became traumatized by the sight of them. But it was a verbal incident that traumatized John the most.
The regret was pierced into my soul and my psyche one hapless day. I remember a lot about it, and I don't remember much at all. I remember it started at five in the evening with dinner. I was asked why my grades were terrible. I was asked again and again, and no answer would suffice. My step-father, a well-built man with an intimidating stature. He slammed on the table until this boy was lost in buckets of tears. This boy who was so socially insecure he couldn't tell his family that the house was on fire. This boy who was recently bullied by children and still bullied by adults. They took the food and drink sooner or later, and the boy gave many answers—from "I don't understand the material" (which was an unsatisfactory answer) to "I don't care." The only satisfactory answer was "because I'm lazy." That answer came about at 8 PM and the food was returned, cold and salvaged by flies. - Today I learned that Pluto is a Planet, John Enter

In early 2004, John had a pivotal experience when he and his family visited an animal shelter to adopt a dog he could call his own. The family already had a lot of pets crowded in a fairly small house, which included at least three Chihuahuas, two rabbits, a ferret, and a dog that belonged to Brandon. The care they could provide for them in those conditions was questionable. But the Newfoundland mix John chose quickly developed a bond with the boy, and he cared for the dog the best he could.
John's puppy was energetic from the start. His favorite treats were apples, and he loved roughhousing with John. Almost immediately, the family noticed his tendency for stupid habits, like how he'd run in circles until he accidentally bumped into a wall. That's why John and his family eventually decided to name him Patrick, in reference to Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants. Patrick soon became John's best friend, and one of the most important pieces of his life.
Tumblr media
Even from this early age, Johnathan was heavily influenced by the media he consumed, which gave him a strong creative drive that he would spend much of the future exploring. His retreat into fiction, though, might have been more of an escape from his difficulties at home and in school. What happened in the next few years would prove to be equally reflective of the man John would grow up to be.
next part coming soon...

1. Were you named after anyone?
My mom used to have a friend named Holly who remarked how she always loved her name. I have been repeatedly assured I was not named after Big Hol.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Christmas Day when Ed’s parrot Azul died :(
3. Do you have kids?
Nah
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
As a kiddy kid I did a lot of sports for a season or two (soccer, basketball) or several summers (softball) but I fenced foil for a few years and later on did some cross country. I would like to get back into fencing but would need to find a casual club that’s a good fit and change from a French grip to a Pistol grip due to hand hurty
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Often, but I prefer deadpan understatements.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Currently it’s whether they have a flu shot badge at work and then if they’re masking (mandatory if they don’t have the shot, highly encouraged regardless). I have had to do so many audits and trying not to STARE at people’s badges and lower faces due to exposures at work.
7. What's your eye color?
Blueish gray green. Aka blue.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Tumblr media
9. Any talents?
I can make myself and others stop hiccuping on command.
10. Where were you born?
Chicago suburbs
11. What are your hobbies?
Lots of art, writing, sewing, and crafting is what I usually tell people without getting into the details.
12. Do you have any pets?
No, but once I figure out the petsitting situation I would love to get two rats. I am not actively figuring out the petsitting situation.
Look, it’s one thing to ask a big group if someone could watch a cat for a weekend and it’s easy af to find a dog sitter but it’s hard to ask people to feed and clean up for two rats. It just is.
13. How tall are you?
5’8”
14. Favorite subject in school?
Latin. Languages in general.
15. Dream job?
I sit as the creative head of a production company. Is it animation? Is it comics? Video games? Doesn’t matter. I explain to the group in the room ideas for stories and they wait with bated breath to the finish. They applaud. Standing ovation is implied. They set to work on making my visions and stories and characters a reality with far more technical artistic skill than I personally have but 100% under my 100% perfect creative direction. The story is an international hit. Millions adore these stories and characters and are impacted in their life in a positive way, always remembering these little tales and being so normal about them. I live a quiet life in a cute little house drawing silly doodles when I’m not drafting the next story— and let’s be real, I don’t need to draft since it’s perfect and easy from the start— and give Q&As where no one asks dumb questions and everyone perfectly understands and respects my vision and desire to not tell certain details but listens spellbound for every tangent I go on about the history of one line or a part I thought was funny. Everyone leaves me alone but radiates in my storytelling prowess and is inspired in turn. Me and my characters are forever remembered in the realms of history.
That's not what you meant by “dream job?” Well, I actually like my infection control job and the parts I dislike are the parts that suck for all regulatory jobs. Love 2 tell people to wash their hands.

Niki Blethers: Daniel Spellbound first impressions:
I’ve only watched the first episode, so I’m not considering anything I talk about here as Spoiler Territory, but if you want to go in to this show absolutely 100% blind, maybe skip this post.
The short version: Color me intrigued.
Followers of mine already know that I am a huuuuuuuge fan of the Tales of Arcadia series on Netflix (sans the movie–we don’t talk about the movie), so when I first heard the premise for Daniel Spellbound, it immediately struck me as being in a similar vein as that series.
It’s an urban fantasy following the magical misadventures of a teenager and a talking pig. What’s interesting about this premise to me is the fact that our main characters start the series already fully aware of and participating in the magical underground that exists beneath New York City. Daniel isn’t some normal kid who discovers this magical world by accident, he’s been living and working in it for years by the time of the first episode.
Speaking of Daniel, I like him as our main protagonist so far. He’s a quick-thinking, fast-talking, maybe-sorta-rule-breaking kid who has obviously been alone for way too long. He works as a Tracker–someone who hunts down magical artifacts and ingredients for wizards to use in their spells–but he doesn’t take any pride in his work, and even describes magic as “a scam.” Right out of the gate he’s shown to have no qualms about taking even the lowest, most disgusting jobs if it means getting paid (our introduction to him is literally him sticking his arm in a mound of troll crap to retrieve the mushrooms growing inside). But there’s also a quiet warmth to him, which comes out most prominently in his interactions with Hoagie the magical talking pig.
I’m gonna be up front here, when I first saw Hoagie’s design in a promo image, I was SO ready to hate him. Like, I know it’s not fair to hold him to the same standard as Archie the Cat-Dragon from ToA: Wizards, but I couldn’t help it. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that Hoagie….is actually very tolerable. And there is an in-universe reason for the eyepatch, a very dark and traumatic reason that hasn’t been outright stated, but heavily implied.
Hoagie himself is actually very similar to Daniel, being a little self-centered and extremely sarcastic. I really like the dynamic between the two of them as a result. They butt heads more often than not (Hoagie’s best character moments are when he is just aggressively sassing the ever-living daylights out of Daniel), but their back and forth can be very fun, and it’s really satisfying to see them come out of the first episode as a newly-formed team.
I can see Hoagie’s character being obnoxious to some (especially since he spends the majority of the first episode being a pain in Daniel’s neck), but I ended up tentatively liking him, and I really like the potential for friendship that has formed between him and Daniel.
This show’s portrayal of magic is very fun and creative. From a hotdog vendor making duplicates of himself to expand his business reach, to a half-pint witch known for her highly dangerous magical pies and her propensity for holding intense grudges, it really feels like magic in this world is full of infinite possibilities, and not just limited to flashing lights and floating books.
The magical environments reflect this as well, creating a very cool contrast with the drab and mundane New York City. I especially love the creature design of the trolls in the first part of the episode.
The animation is serviceable. It’s pretty obvious that they were on a tight budget, but that’s not something I hold against them. In fact, I have to commend the animators and directors for their clever management of limited resources. As I said above, the magical environments are extremely creative and even downright breathtaking in some shots. Character animation can be a little weightless from time to time, especially during an action sequences, but if that’s the show’s biggest flaw in terms of visuals, they’re doing pretty good.
The dialogue can feel a little weird and choppy here and there, but it’s definitely nowhere near as bad as some other shows/movies I’ve seen.
Overall, I’m interested to see where this series goes. I want to see more of the magical underworld, I want to learn more about Daniel, and I’m eager to see more of him and Hoagie bonding (or just Hoagie sassing him some more, honestly both are good). I don’t want to jump the gun and say it’s great, but from the first episode, I can safely say that it’s got a lot of great potential, enough that I’m going to keep watching and see where they go with that. Depending on how it turns out, I may do a longer and more comprehensive post about the series as a whole, but for now, I can at least say that it is worth checking out and seeing for yourself.
