PAUL'S BALL
a launch party for wings
Tumblr media
He produced a handwritten invitation, leaving space to write in the invitee's name, as well as a number, which would be used for a raffle drawing toward the end of the evening. (The prize was a magnum of champagne; the disc jockey Jeff Dexter was the winner.) (..) The recommended dress was "glam."(..)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some 800 musicians, reporters, friends of the band and music business honchos were invited.(..)
As always at such events, there was ample carping, which a reporter for Rolling Stone duly cataloged. After describing the Empire Ballroom as decidedly unhip, a leftover from the days when the Joe Loss Orchestra would play foxtrots, and young ladies shopped for husbands among the dancers, the writer noted that while the wine and cheese were free, everything at the bar was for sale.
(…)
Eyebrows were raised when, instead of a Wings performance, partygoers were treated to fox-trots, waltzes, quicksteps, and congas, played by McVay's band-along with what McVay remembered as arrangements of sixties and seventies hits, including a Beatles medley and some Beach Boys tunes. They were raised higher still when the heavily sequined and coiffed Frank and Peggy Spence Latin and Ballroom Formation Dancing Teams filed onto the floor to demonstrate their artistry.
"I'm beginning to think that Paul actually digs all this" one guest quipped to the Rolling Stone reporter, "that he actually likes dance bands, ballrooms, and buffet food. That's incredibly camp, you know, incredibly camp. Have you seen his suit? It's like a clown's costume, the jacket is about five sizes too big, and it's not even been finished."
(from the McCartney Legacy Vol. 1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul: A press launch is always a good excuse to have a night out, so we invited friends and journalists, played the album, danced and had a few funny people come on to entertain. I wore an outrageous big check suit that I thought would be good. When I went to collect it from the tailor that morning he told me that it wasn’t finished. I said, ‘Maybe not, but it’s a look!’ So I went to the party with the cotton and the stitching showing, and everyone said, ‘Your suit’s not finished.’ I said, ‘Yeah, I know. Great, huh?’
(from Wingspan, 2002)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the guests that attended were Jimmy Page, Elton John, Sandy Denny, Mary Hopkin, members of the Who, the Faces, Deep Purple, Ginger Baker, Henry McCullough, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Graham Bond, Sandie Shaw, the Greek synthesizer wizard Vangelis, the actors Malcolm McDowell, and Terence Stamp, some of the Monty Python troupe, Sir Joseph Lockwood, the head of EMI, Allan Clarke, of the Hollies, and (Benny) Gallagher and (Graham) Lyle.
After the party a fan encountered Paul:
He went skipping (yes it is true) down the road with Linda and just as he turned the corner to a side street, I took courage and called him back. He stopped and said “yeah” so I ran to catch him up and breathlessly asked him for his autograph. The funny part is my pen was at the bottom of this large bag of mine! He stood patiently watching me with arms folded as I rummaged elbow deep. I asked him if he had a pen as I just couldn’t find mine; he said no (which isn’t surprising as he had this crazy suit on that had no pockets).

My top 10  most anticipated fights of the weekend (7/31/2024-8/5/2024). In no particular order. But also, bonus stuff cause there's more stuff going on I'm happy to see.
Tumblr media
Terence Crawford vs Israil Madrimov - Terence Crawford is arguably the best boxer on the planet. He went undisputed in 2 divisions. He absolutely picked apart and tore up an elite welterweight in Errol Spence. And now he’s got his eyes set on Canelo. But that means trying to bridge 3 weight classes. So he’s moving up to super welterweight, where he will challenge WBA champion Israil Madrimov. And while the Boots fight is the one boxing fans wanted to see, Crawford is a 36 year old moving up a weight class to fight a young undefeated world champion. Nothing to sneeze at. Madrimov is a more than capable world championship level boxer and there isn’t a ton of tape out there on him because he’s still relatively young in the game. The table is set for some magic.
Cory Sandhagen vs Umar Nurmagomedov - UFC on ABC 7 - First time we will see Cory Sandhagen in almost 11 months after he tore his tricep mid-fight against Rob Font. Crazy to see how quiet it’s been for Sandhagen, even with the injury. The constant flux of the 135lb division has had him lost in the narrative. With O’Malley becoming champ, his weird rematch with Chito, Yan finally getting the bounce back win, Figs moving up to 135lbs, Cejudo coming back, and now Merab finally getting his title fight, I feel like Sandhagen is an afterthought. But nothing will boost your career like putting an L on a Nurmagomedov. Umar has done his part of adding to his father and brother’s family legacy, winning 5 straight inside the UFC to stay a perfect 17-0. The interesting part of this one is Usman has a propensity to strike with his opponents, far more than his brother did while Cory has shown he is susceptible to a heavy, aggressive wrestling game. We’ll see how it shakes out but I’m super excited for this one.
Chito Vera vs Deiveson Figueiredo - UFC on ABC 7 - this one has stinker potential. I like Chito, but the man spends 95% of every fight just walking forward throwing nothing. He’s got huge potential for violence. He finished that otherwise one sided beating of O’Malley by hurting him with a bad knee to the body. But he will just let you circle if you want for 15-25 minutes. And I feel like that is a lot of what Figueiredo has built his game around at 135lbs.He’s not the huge powerhouse bulldozer anymore. He’s just a really fast, accurate puncher who can leap across distance. I can see this being a fight where rounds are decided by like a handful of exchanges. But still hyped as I like watching both fighters fight when they’re at their best.
Elves Brener vs Joel Alvarez - UFC on ABC 7 - Brenner is fun. Alvarez is fun. Alvarez is a 6’2 freak at 155lbs who likes to use his size to set up submissions (he’s won all 20 fights by stoppage, 17 by sub). Brener is a Chute Boxe fighter. Nuff said. Should be electric while it lasts. And I don’t expect it to last terribly long.
Dakota Ditcheva vs. Jena Bishop - PFL 7: 2024 Playoffs - I’m not sure if this fight will be competitive. Small sample size but Dakota Ditcheva really looks like the goods. But Jena Bishop is an elite jiu jitsu player and if you’re going to get exposed for your lack of grappling skills as a striker, she’s the type you lose to. Ditcheva is a fantastic striker who has shown some tremendous finishing ability against lesser competition. Jena Bishop will be the best fighter she has fought thus far and it’ll be interesting to see if the knowledge of her grappling skills causes Ditcheva to forego some of her tools to avoid possibly being taken down.
Taila Santos vs. Liz Carmouche - PFL 7: 2024 Playoffs - A weird fight. Feels like with a different bracket, this is the final. This has stinker potential too tbh. Carmouche is not historically a fun fighter and Santos is someone who is more known for giving Valentina Shevchenko a hard time rather than a fun fight. But the interesting thing for me is which version of each fighter shows up. Santos is so content to grapple, wrestle, etc with a lot of her competition and when forced into that type of fight, can prove to be incredibly difficult to handle. Carmouche is someone who theoretically will try to take her down and beat her up with elbows from inside the guard/half guard. But we’ve also seen instances of Carmouche getting an opponent who she will decide to strike with, because the idea of extended grappling sequences seem too much or too risky. I’m interested in that dynamic, even if it makes for a hard 15 minutes to watch
Andy Cruz vs Antonio Moran - It’s Andy Cruz. Of course I’m interested. The rush does not stop. Cruz has fought competition high above the benchmark for guys just starting out their careers. He’s fighting former world title challengers at the very start of his pro career. And working with Bootst team in Philly shows me he’s serious about become not only a world champion but a big player in the sport. He gets a spot on the undercard of Crawford-Madrimov. Matchroom is positioning him for big lightweight fights. And while Antonio Moran isn’t a world beater, he is a guy who is 30-6-1 and been a step up fight for fighters like Devin Haney, Arnold Barboza, and Jose Pedraza.
David Morrell vs Radivoje Kalajdzic - David Morrell was the scariest fighter at 168lbs. HUGE power out of both hands with some really crafty set-ups thanks to that Cuban amateur background of his. But with the politics of the division revolving around Canelo, he decided enough of that and has moved up to 175lbs is search of a big fight. Radivoje Kalajdzic is a fine 175lber in his own right. Not a world champion level but a fine first fight in the weight class with some pop himself. And considering how hard it was for David Benavidez when he made the jump against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, we’ll see how much of Morrell’s power really carries upwards.
Nabil Anane vs Felipe Lobo - I don’t know as much about Nabil Anane as I should but from what I have seen he is 6’7 fighting at 145lbs. A true Muay Thai Sebastian Fundora. And I’m here for it. Lobo is always a fun fight, win or lose. Nabil has won 3 straight in ONE and looked like a killer in the process. What’s not to love?
Dedduanglek vs Nakrab 2 - A rematch of a fight I remember really enjoying the first time around.
Honorable mention:
Caroline Dubois vs Maira Moneo - I had a secret 11th fight I wanted on here. Rare in recent weeks seeing as a lot of folks are taking off for the summer. Caroline Dubois is emerging as a true elite talent at lightweight. With Katie Taylor up at 140lbs, those LW titles are potentially floating in the ether. Dubois is looking to grab the interim WBC belt in a fight against a very game Maira Moneo. Haven’t seen much of Moneo but she has a win over an old but game Erica Farias. Can’t put this in the top ten because I don’t know Moneo like at all but I’m always excited to see Caroline Dubois.
Olympic Wrestling - Olympic Wrestling starts on Monday, August 5th. And to me, it’s by far the most fun combat sport at the games. You got so many fantastic wrestlers competing this year. Akhmed Tazhudinov, Stevan Micic, Rei Higuchi, Hassan Yazdani, Amir Zare, Geno Petriashvili, etc. Mijaín López is looking to become the first ever 5x Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman, cementing himself as the greatest Olympic wrestler of all time. Yui Susaki is looking to etch her name as the heir to Kaori Icho and Saori Yoshida and lead the Japanese Women’s Wrestling team into their next era of dominance. American Amit Elor is the future of the US Wrestling team and after capturing 8 gold medals at the world level in the last four years, she’s looking to add a gold medal. Speaking of Americans - Kyle Dake, Spencer Lee, Zain Retherford, Kennedy Blades, Aaron Brooks, Kyle Snyder, Mason Parris, Dominique Parrish, Helen Maroulis, Kayla Miracle, and more. It’s a great squad. They’ll definitely bring home some medals. Looking forward to it!
Feel free to show what has got you all excited this week in the world of combat sports.

A scenario in my Coffee Shop DR
I arrive at Spencer’s house after a very long week.
Warnings: Drinking, boys kissing, lowkey a breakdown
Immediately after I’m done at work I go to Spencer’s apartment. It’s been a hard week and it’s finally Friday, I can finally keep him up because he finally doesn’t have work the next day. Thank god.
He answers the door, still in his regular clothes, lacking the blazer and tie. Brown pants, green cardigan, dress shirt.
“Matt? What’s up?” He asks gently, inviting me inside.
“I missed you.” I say gently. “I had a hard week.”
“How come?” He asks, his hands finding my jacket as he helps me slip out of it.
“Just… I don’t really know.”
He knows it’s a lie. He doesn’t press me about it, he knows better than to. I’d just get upset and leave, he’d rather me not be alone when I’m upset.
“Okay, well… do you want to do something? Need anything?” He asks gently.
“You keep the good wine around here somewhere, don’t you?” I ask.
“You don’t think any wine is good.” He teases, pushing the hair out of my face.
“Maybe I will tonight.” I say with a smile. “Please?”
“You sure you’re okay?” He asks, his voice softening as he asks.
“Yeah, I’m just really in the mood to take some edge off.” I force a smile.
“Fine… just, let’s not overdo it, okay?”
He gets the wine and we sit down, sipping quietly. I definitely end up overdoing it. Within about 20 minutes I’m sifting through his records, looking for something to listen to.
“Your music taste is ass.” I giggle. “All classical. Where’s that album I got you?”
“Oh, it’s next to the player.” He says. We’re both slurring our words a little, I’m more drunk than him. Neither of us are surprised about that.
I get up, stumbling over my own two feet as I walk over to the record player. I almost fall, causing me to curse under my breath.
“Ah, found it.” I say, putting it on the player. It takes a second before music starts coming out of it.
The story behind the gift is funny. A few weeks before Christmas last year I had been at Spencer’s, looking at his stuff, and I noticed that he has no good music. So I went out and found my favorite album ever recorded; Grace (legacy edition) by Jeff Buckley. With it, there was a handwritten note.
“Here you go, Spence. The start of good music in your collection. It’s my favorite, you’d better like it.
Love, Matt.”
“I listen to it a lot.” He admits from the couch. I turn to him with a soft smile.
“Yeah?” I say softly. “Glad I got it for you?”
“Definitely.” He smiles. I put on the record, the first song that plays is “Mojo Pin.” I sing along drunkenly. The words are slurred and I’m slightly behind on the words but I know it by heart.
Spencer watches as I dance around his apartment, although, it wasn’t exactly dancing, more so waltzing around the apartment, occasionally throwing my hands up and tripping over my own two feet.
When “Hallelujah” comes on I look at Spencer. I smile forms over my lips and I step toward him, stumbling a little. He isn’t nearly as inebriated as I am, he usually isn’t.
“Spencer.” I say in a singsong tone. “You should dance with me.”
He smiles and lets out a quiet laugh. “What? I can’t dance.” He says, trying his best to get out of it.
“Come on. Please? For me?” I ask.
“Matt, I can’t dance when I’m sober, what makes you think I’m gonna be able to dance when I’m drunk?” He says, smiling up at me. I offer him my hand.
“Then just sway with me.” I say softly.
He rolls his eyes. “I can’t!” He giggles.
By the time he is finally convinced, Jeff Buckley has gotten through almost a minute of the song. I pull him up and I wrap my arms around his waist. He doesn’t know what to do with his.
“Matt, I don’t dance.” He giggles.
“Just hold me. You do that, right?” I say, looking at him with a gentle gaze. He smiles and looks down as he rests his arms over my shoulders.
“Is this good?” He asks.
“This is perfect.” I say gently. I shift forward and rest my head on his shoulder.
Well it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
As the music progresses, I begin to make more dramatic movements with my body, guiding Spencer’s along with mine. He stumbles and blushes with embarrassment.
“I’m so uncoordinated!” He says. “I can’t do this.”
I smile at him.
“Yes you can, come on.” I say, pulling him back into me. My hands rest on his hips.
“Put your hands here.” I say, and I move his hands to my waist, they wrap around slightly. “Would you like to hold one of my hands or stay like this?”
He pauses for a moment. “Um… Hold hands.”
I giggle and take his left hand in my right. I hold it to the side, near our shoulders.
“I’ll guide you, okay?” I say softly. “Step with your right foot.”
He does, I do it at the same time. He smiles at me. I tell him to move his left and he does.
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
He’s finally starting to get the hang of it, although, he accidentally steps on my feet every so often. We laugh together.
“You’re doing great.” I say softly.
“Am I?” He sounds like he absolutely does not believe me. “I keep stepping on you and I’ve never danced before in my life-“
I kiss him to interrupt him. The movement stops.
“That’s why I’m teaching you.” I whisper when the kiss finally ends. His face is red. “Come on. Left… right…”
I guide him and we dance in circles around his living room.
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch, and love is not a victory march. It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah
Our dancing has slowed. It’s turned more into a standing hug. My face is buried in his shoulder and his hand is on my head, gently playing with my hair.
“Matt?” He asks, his voice is gentle.
“Hm?” I ask gently.
“It’s not healthy to drink away your problems.” He says gently. “I’m not trying to tell you how to live or anything. Just…”
“I know.” I say quietly. My hold on Spencer tightens, just a little. “I don’t know what else to do. There isn’t anything to talk through…”
“That’s okay.” He whispers. “This was fun though, right?”
“Mhm.” I admit.
“And I’m glad you didn’t just get sad drunk all by yourself. I’m glad you came to me.” He says softly. His hand runs up my hair.
“I knew you’d be upset if I ended up drinking myself into a coma.” I joke.
“Maybe a little.” He laughs. He puts his hand under my chin and makes me look at him. “I love you, Mathis.”
I smile, looking over his face.
“I love you too, Spencer.”
He places a gentle kiss on my lips, his hand finding my jaw.
“Stay the night?” He asks softly. “You can’t exactly drive home, anyway.”
“I’ll stay.” I whisper. “Thank you.”

On 16th December 1911 the Fraserburgh born businessman Businessman Thomas Blake Glover died in Tokyo.
Glover San is just one of the names the Maverick Aberdonian entrepreneur Thomas Blake Glover helped forge modern Japan yet remains little known in his homeland.
In Japan, the greatness of Fraserburgh’s most famous son – ‘GurAba San’ as he is also known there – has long been taken as read.
His physical legacy is evident in Glover Gardens in Nagasaki, one of Japan’s few nineteenth century heritage sites, which attracts two million visitors a year (almost twice as many as Edinburgh Castle).
Just as tellingly, sepia photos of his whiskered face are a staple of Japanese advertising campaigns, most for Kirin Beer, and more recently whisky, produced by an industrial conglomerate that he helped to found.
Glover has spawned two biographies, plus a fictional life story by leading Scots writer Alan Spence. An aborted feature film of his life was due to have starred Sean Connery.
For the first six years of his life Glover lived at number 15 Commerce Street in Fraserburgh. His father was the chief coastguard in Fraserburgh, he was English and his mother was A Scot from Fordyce, Banffshire. His father was formerly an Officer in the Royal Navy. Thomas Blake Glover had 6 brothers and a sister. The house no longer remains because it was destroyed after a bombing by the German Luftwaffe Air Force during World War 2.
In 1851 the family moved to a Victorian Home in Bridge of Don in Aberdeen. Upon leaving school Thomas Blake Glover started work for a trading company and was soon travelling the World, becoming a successful trader in weapons and ships. His travels took him to Japan with one of his brothers when they both worked for the tea merchant Jardine, Matheson & Co. during the late 1850s and early 1860s.
During his time in Japan Thomas Glover achieved a great deal. He helped the Samurai to overthrow their military leader, the Shogun. This action helped to restore The Emperor to his throne. This earned Glover the nicknames The Broch Samurai and The Scottish Samurai.
Thomas Glover was also a key part in the industrialisation of Japan. After commissioning three warships to be built at Aberdeen shipyards (including the Jho Sho Maru which was their first iron-clad warship) for the Japanese Navy he formed his own shipbuilding company. This developed into the company Mitsubishi after his bankruptcy in 1870. He remained in the company as a Consultant. He also introduced the first trains to Japan and the first mechanised coal mine. He owned the Takashima Coal Mine and helped found the Kirin Beer Company.
Along with other foreign residents they built and funded the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at the Minami Yamate hillside in 1862.
While living in Nagasaki in 1863 he built a house on the Minami Yamate hillside which overlooks Nagasaki Harbour. This still remains as the oldest Western style building in Japan. Over 2 million people visit the park it is set in it each year.
Plans were announced a few years ago, for the Aberdeen family home of the Glovers to be turned into a £2m research hub, if this happens it could turn Aberdeen into a mecca for curious Japanese visitors, it sad to say that this has not materialised and the house, which has lay unoccupied for several years is left neglected and in a state of disrepair.

Potential Riverdale Recasts
Been debating recasting some Riverdale ocs but not sure what direction I want to go in, any thoughts would be super appreciated!
(some of these faces are also ones that if I don't use as recasts, I'll probably use for future ocs, which makes it harder for me to decide because "well who would I rather have in Riverdale" doesn't make the decision for me)
Tumblr media
1 – Astoria Topaz: Toni's twin sister; currently China Anne McClain (bottom), new options Samantha Logan (middle) or Zendaya (top)
Astoria Topaz was a Serpent by blood, and by choice.  She joined with her twin sister and their two best friends, Fangs and Sweet Pea, when they were all thirteen, and had quickly risen in the ranks among teenagers.  She never expected to be a leader though, until FP Jones got arrested. Suddenly there was a hole that needed to be filled, and apparently Astoria would have to fill it.  That’s fine, she’s a born Serpent and knows how to keep her family together–or she did, until Jughead Jones walks into the Wyrm, suddenly ready to take on his legacy.  But still, Astoria was born a Serpent, and she’ll die a Serpent, she’ll live as a Serpent come hell or high water.
Tumblr media
2 – Barbie Booth (tbd if going to recast): currently Candice King (middle), other options Sydney Sweeney (left) or Ginny Gardner (right)
By fifteen, Barbie Booth already had her eye on the prize: early admission to Tisch for musical theatre, followed by an upper east side apartment with her best friend Veronica Lodge - who would be studying business at Columbia, and then starring as Elle Woods in a revival of Legally Blonde The Musical.  But her plan didn’t include Veronica’s dad getting arrested, and her other half moving to some bumfuck town called Riverdale, leaving her alone for her sophomore year at Spence.  And it definitely didn’t account for her parents up and moving them to Riverdale, for reasons that they refused to explain.  But at least she’d be with Ronnie again, and at least Ronnie told her that Riverdale High wasn’t as bad as they’d imagined.  But then they get to Riverdale, and her plans really go to shit -not only did her parents not research the town that they were moving to, but they bought a house on the south side of the town, dooming her to the rundown school on the wrong side of the tracks, riddled with gangs, murder investigations and, worst of all, no musical theatre program.
Tumblr media
3 – Fallon Parris Jones (tbd if going to recast): Jughead's twin: currently Brenna D'Amico (bottom), other options Ella Purnell (middle) or Odeya Rush (top)
Fallon Parris Jones, FP to her friends, was taken to Toledo against her will when her parents separated.  She would have stayed, for Jellybean, except her dad called her and told her that her twin had just been hauled in and questioned for murder.  Fallon may play at obedience, but her twin’s wellbeing is always the most important thing in the world, so she hops on the next bus to Riverdale with no intention of leaving him ever again.  It isn’t until she arrives that she finds out just how deep her family is in this mess, and clearly no one else can be counted on to fix everything.  Armed with nothing but her well-worn Serpent jacket, a switchblade, and an unstoppable determination to protect her brother, Riverdale is about to find out that they messed with the wrong family.
Tumblr media
4 – Francesca Jones: Betty's twin but adopted by FP: currently Lili Reinhart, new options Peyton List (top), Zoey Deutch (middle), or Sophie Thatcher (bottom)
Francesca Paige Jones grew up on the Southside with her brother Jughead and their miracle sister Jellybean, although she chose to stay on the Southside and not interact with the other side of town, despite knowing that she had a twin sister and biological parents somewhere across the tracks, despite knowing that Jughead was even friends with her twin. But then Gladys and Jellybean move to Toledo, Jughead leaves home, FP helps dispose of Jason Blossom’s body, and suddenly the Northside is paying attention to them.  She would have been perfectly happy to fly under the radar, to continue to pretend that she had no ties to the Northside, had she not come face to face with Betty Cooper.
Tumblr media
5 – Jac Daniels (tbd if going to recast): currently Alycia Debnam-Carey, other option Zoey Deutch
Despite being a Southside Serpent, Jacqueline Daniels was one of the last truly good people in the town of Riverdale.  Despite being surrounded by darkness, she wore her heart on her sleeve and always kept her heart open for more strays.  Of course the majority of it was taken up by her three best friends and fellow Serpents, but when Jughead Jones transferred to Southside High, she knew there would be a place for him too.  And there was, and Jughead found himself with a new tour guide slash bodyguard slash friend, whose open heart and pure soul were rivalled only by her fierce loyalty and protective nature.  But even the brightest light in Riverdale has a breaking point, and when Northside drama starts to endanger her friends, her family, Jac may just discover her own.
Tumblr media
6 – Jewel Cooper (tbd if going to recast): FP & Alice's daughter, Betty & Jughead's younger sister: currently Grace Phipps (right), other options Katie Douglas (top), Ella Purnell (bottom), or Zoey Deutch (left)
Opal Cooper, the youngest of the Cooper sisters, had always known that she was different.  How could she not? Her dark hair made her the literal black sheep of her perfectly blonde family.  Sure, her mom always claimed that she inherited it from her grandfather, but Opal knew that something was different.  So, in the summer before she started high school, she did some digging.  She wasn’t surprised at all to find she wasn’t a Cooper, but she was more than a little shocked to learn her biological father was none other than FP Jones.  A simple desire to build a relationship with her real dad started Opal down a road that she never expected; a road of gangs and murder and nicknames.  Starting high school armed with a switchblade and the truth about what happened to Jason Blossom, the newly nicknamed Jewel Cooper was nothing like the Opal anyone remembered.
Tumblr media
7 – Tanya Conway: daughter of Joseph Svenson/Conway: currently Nicola Peltz (middle), new options Olivia Cooke (left) or Olivia Scott Welch (right)
Identity was fickle, as far as Tanya was concerned. To some she was Tanya Trent, a first generation serpent whose mother was the principal of Southside High, until the Black Hood killed her. To others she was Tanya Svenson, a Southside punk whose father was the janitor at Riverdale High, until he was killed for being the Black Hood. To herself she was Tanya Conway, a teenage girl who knew that the Cooper family had killed her dad’s family; who knew that, even after they divorced, her dad loved her mom; who knew that, no matter what anyone said, her dad wasn’t the Black Hood. And now she’s just Tanya, a scared but stubborn girl with no sense of identity who’s just been sent to Riverdale High with her fellow Serpents, armed with nothing but the snake tattooed on her back and the need to clear her father’s name.
Tumblr media
8 – Vine Verona (tbd if going to recast): currently Emily Rudd (middle), other options Milly Alcock (left) or Zoey Deutch (right)
If there was one thing that Ivy Verona was good at, it was lying.  She lied to the Northsiders; she said she was Northside pure, that her guardian was an accountant, that she’d never even heard of the Whyte Wyrm.  She lied to the Southside too; she said she was flunking all her major classes, said cheerleading was only a front, said she planned to stay in Riverdale the rest of her life. And then there was the lie that she told the entire town - that she had no idea what might’ve happened to Jason Blossom. Only her uncle FP and best friend Joaquin knew the truth.  She’d been Jason’s dealer; she’d brought him to the Wyrm; she’d watched him die, and then washed away his blood; she dumped his body in the river and pretended it never happened. But the biggest lie she told was to herself - that Jason Blossom’s death was not her fault.

Published: January 03, 2024
2023 turned out to be a stronger than anticipated year for the sweet science. The most demanded fight of the last half-decade finally took place in Terence Crawford’s demolition of Errol Spence. Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia showed that boxing doesn’t need to have world titles on the line to sell PPVs.
Amanda Serrano took it upon herself to demand women be allowed to fight in three-minute rounds, with championship fights for the full 12. Showtime’s relationship with boxing officially came to an end. YouTube and social media influencer boxing seem like they’re here to stay, and Saudi Arabia has established itself as a destination for boxing for the foreseeable future.
The sport is still plagued with the same issues of inactivity, especially when it comes to fighters on the pound-for-pound list. Also, boxing’s fractured nature, ranging from promoter to state to country, has managed to keep the subject of drug testing a work in progress.
Frontproof Media will look at some of the best of 2023, highlighting those who deserve and have earned recognition.
Fighter of the Year
Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue
In most instances, the Fighter of the Year award is one-sided, with one candidate ahead of the pack. 2023, however, has had multiple fighters worthy of the crown, and this year, we will give credit to two fighters who separated themselves as the best in the sport, pound-for-pound. Those two are Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) and Naoya Inoue (26-0, 23 KOS).
It’s rare for Fighter of the Year honors to be awarded to two fighters; however, it’s happened a handful of times. Over Ring Magazine’s century-plus history, it has given the prestigious award to two pugilists five times, most recently, in 2020, when Teofimo Lopez and Tyson Fury won.
Crawford dismantled Errol Spence over nine rounds for the undisputed welterweight championship in one of the greatest pay-per-view performances in history. Although Crawford only fought once in 2023, how he dismantled Spence on boxing’s biggest stage in a legacy-defining match gave him an upper hand over nearly every other fighter.
After becoming the undisputed bantamweight champion, Inoue moved up to super bantamweight and faced what many considered to be the number one fighter in the division, Stephen Fulton. Much like Crawford’s victory over Spence, Inoue demolished Fulton over eight one-sided rounds in one of the premier showings of the year.
For some, what gives Inoue an edge over Crawford is that he also earned undisputed status by stopping Marlon Tapales in 10 rounds. It’s difficult for any fighter to have back-to-back near-perfect performances, and while Inoue didn’t look as good against Tapales as he did against Fulton, he was still dominant.
Crawford and Inoue earned distinctions as undisputed champions in two weight classes in 2023, and no matter who you have sitting at the number one spot, they both showed the gap between them and everyone else.
Honorable Mentions:
Amanda Serrano
Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs) did more than most in 2023. She became the undisputed featherweight champion, defended her titles twice against two top opponents in her division, and became the first women’s boxer in over a decade to fight in a scheduled 12-round championship match featuring three-minute rounds.
Few fighters in the sport are as active as Serrano, and at 35, she continues to push herself physically as she plans to head back into mixed martial arts in 2024.
Leigh Wood
The United Kingdom’s Leigh Wood (28-3, 17 KOs) is arguably boxing’s most exciting action fighter. His fights deliver drama and knockouts. In 2023, Wood lost his WBA featherweight title to Mauricio Lara, then won it back in a rematch just a few months later. He ended the year by stopping two-time featherweight champion and UK rival Josh Warrington.
Typically, when a fighter suffers a loss, it will disqualify them from Fighter of the Year consideration, but, in Wood’s case, he was able to avenge his loss in a short time and garner arguably the biggest win of his career. Wood may not be on any pound-for-pound lists, but he is one of the best featherweights in the world and is always a must-watch whenever he fights.
Fight of the Year
Amanda Serrano vs Erika Cruz
02/04/2023
2023 doesn’t have a fight that was levels above the rest, such as Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo or Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Erik Morales. Still, there were numerous outstanding fights, all within the same range of excitement. Several fights could have been given the Fight of the Year award depending on the day asked and which fight was seen most recently. Ultimately, Frontproof Media chose Amanda Serrano’s war with Erika Cruz (17-2, 3 KOs) for the undisputed featherweight title as 2023’s Fight of the Year.
For pure, sustained action from start to finish, Serrano’s battle against Cruz is difficult to top as the two traded for nearly every second of each round at the Madison Square Garden Theater. A headbutt in the third round added to the fight’s intensity, with blood coming down from Cruz’s hairline, leaving her face, opponent, and the ring drenched with blood.
Ironically, the fight could be used as an argument for continuing to have two-minute rounds in women’s boxing, as Serrano and Cruz each threw nearly 1000 punches over the 10-round distance. Much like Serrano’s fight with Katie Taylor in 2022, her fight with Cruz is perfect for showing skeptics of boxing in general how exciting the sport can truly be.
Honorable Mentions:
Luis Nery TKO11 Azat Hovhannisyan
02/18/2023
Devin Haney WUD12 Vasiliy Lomachenko
05/20/2023
Jaime Munguia WUD12 Sergiy Derevyanchenko
06/10/2023
Rafael Espinoza WMD12 Robeisy Ramirez
12/09/2023
Knockout of the Year
Junto Nakatani wko12 Andrew Moloney
05/20/2023
Japanese two-division champion Junto Nakatani’s 12th-round knockout over Andrew Moloney for the vacant WBO super flyweight title was the perfect amalgamation of all facets of the sweet science. The left hand landed by the southpaw champion was perfectly timed, and with Moloney moving into the punch, it was brutal and, in the immediate aftermath, a bit frightening.
Honorable Mentions:
Yoenis Tellez WKO10 Livan Navarro
12/15/2023
Zhilei Zhang WKO3 Joe Joyce
09/23/2023

Ever since Loma accepted a fight with Kambosos next year a lot of people on Twitter have been debating his legacy. Some calling him an all-time great some calling him the most overrated boxer of all time. One person said he was one of the best talents he'd ever seen but his resume didn't reflect it. what do you think about Loma and how he should be remembered when he retires?
Sports fans on the whole are subject to hyperbole. And legacy is fickle. If we're being real accomplishments, while a prerequisite, they are not the end all be all.
I probably agree with the sentiment that Loma's resume does not reflect the level of talent he has but also that doesn't mean he didn't accomplish a lot.
Boxing has existed for over 100 years. Most of the best boxers of all time are long forgotten. Go through Ring Magazine's top 100 boxers of all time and then ask some random dude at a spots bar if they know who Emile Griffith, Tony Canzoneri, and Archie Moore are (all in the top ten btw). How about p4p talent like Junior Jones? or Frankie Randall, the first dude to beat Julio Cesar Chavez sr? Just being mentioned in the convo of like best 100-200 boxers of all time great is a testament to how good you are. Cause there have been a lot of fantastic fighters.
As for how he likely will be remembered, he's a 2x Olympic gold medalist and a 3 division world champion. He's got a unique style that is one of the most aesthetically pleasing styles of fighting in recent memory. I think that's good enough to be remembered fondly, especially as in the internet age where people are going to be clipping some of the visually stunning stuff he did and putting it on tiktok or whatever social media app comes next.
I also think it comes down to how your era is processed media-wise, if that makes sense. For example, the four kings era is remembered fondly in no small part because so many of the guys covering boxing today were kids then. So part of it is going to depend on who is covering the sport in 5, 10, 20, 30 years.
One of the big things being a basketball fan taught me is that part of being remembered when you're gone, is to never really leave. Podcasting, tv analyst, commentary, coaching, etc. You keep your name at the front of people's minds by just never leaving. And all four of those guys are still very much involved with boxing. They're at a lot of big fights, some are gym owners or promoters, or they're doing movies/tv appearances. And they talk to media. A lot. I know what Tommy Hearns thought about Spence-Crawford because he gave an interview about it. What Vasyl does when he stops boxing could have a big effect on his legacy too.
