You know, sometimes me and Sam, we got so much going on that we forget about everyone else.

2x03 “Bloodlust” In a nutshell:

hehe sam once again being the one to make excuses for john and specifically the one to use the phrase "he did the best he could" (sam is the first one to ever utter this phrase in 1x08)

like at the end of this ep dean is reflecting on their whole lives, reassessing john's personal brand of monster ethics that he raised them on. he's telling sam to think about it too, and sam immediately goes for the "he was doing the best he could." like the way fanon paints sam as the one who's more "sympathetic" to monsters, you'd think it'd be sam all torn up abt knowing they probably killed things that didn't deserve it because of how john raised them, but it's dean who's torn up about it. dean who can't stop thinking about it. dean who criticizing john, while sam jumps to his defense. and this is a thread we'll continue to see throughout the season and beyond. once john dies it's roles reversed (not that dean wasn't critical of him when he was alive either). but largely sam adopts a more favorable opinion of john after he dies, while dean becomes increasingly more critical and angry toward john, finally allowing himself the space to feel those negative emotions and resentment toward him now that he's dead.
