And it's just so angsty and they're in love and the whole mess of the lake gate upside down thing happens and they think they're gonna die 😭 but then they get out and they have a really emotional moment in the kitchen of Eddie's trailer

You had never been afraid of death.

After all, you had stared death in the face and simply flipped the grim reaper your middle finger as you survived time and time again along with Steve, Dustin, and the others. You were right there with them from the very beginning, from the day Will Byers had gone missing, you were the only person who gave Joyce the benefit of the doubt when she revealed to you the lights and the letters she had painted on the wall, telling you that Will was somehow communicating to her. Then came the demogorgons in all their unholy wrath, that you fought off fiercely; you remembered the way your body had reacted before your brain did, soaking a machete with gasoline before setting it on fire to ward off the borderline demonic creature.

You were there for the demodogs, the dark dust cloud that had somehow possessed Will, fighting yet another hoard of monsters while simultaneously keeping a watchful eye over the kids, and the new addition to your team: Max. You were there when Billy showed up, brass knuckles you had stolen from your father decorating your fingers as you threw him a punch to the gut, causing him to keel over in time for Max to inject him, knocking him out.

You had begun working at a JCPenny when Starcourt opened, using your job to your advantage as you listened to people’s conversations while you organized and laid out clothes, running to Scoops Ahoy to feed Steve and Dustin any intel.

That was when you met Robin, Robin Buckley, with her short strawberry blonde hair, pretty blue eyes that you swear you could get lost in; like lying on your back as you floated in the ocean, relaxing at the sound of calming waves. The way she often rambled made you smile, the simple way in which she just talked with that raspy, upbeat voice of hers sent your heart aflutter, she was too cute.

In those initial days of knowing her, giggling at her sarcastic, snarky jokes that always seemed to be directed at Steve and his inability to get any action, pacing around the back room of the ice cream shop during your lunch break as the two of listened to the Russian recording in an attempt to decode it, you couldn’t help the growing affection you had for her.

What started out as a soft spot for her turned into fierce protectiveness as the three of you were strapped to chairs by Russian military. You remembered how you screamed at them when Robin and you were taken to a separate room away from Steve, how you kicked and strained at your restraints whenever they had attempted to do something to her.

“Don’t you ever fucking touch her!” You yelled so intensely that your throat felt rough afterwards, momentarily stunning the Russian officer.

Once the three of you had escaped, you sprinted to the bathroom first, throwing up your insides. As you heard Robin barf, despite your own nausea, you needed to ensure she was okay, so you stood up and walked over to the stall she was in, you knelt beside her on the floor, held her hair up as she vomited, and rubbed her back soothingly.

The three of you had sat on the floor, after the heart to heart the three of you had when you had been captured, another one was set to ensue as Robin asked you and Steve if you had ever been in love before. You remember Steve’s answer, obviously: his ever lasting love for Nancy Wheeler. Meanwhile, you couldn’t help but fidget with your clothing, shrugging at your words: “I don’t think I’ve ever been in love before, but uh, there’s this girl—“

Robin’s eyes widened at your words, while Steve had remained neutral, he was the first person you had come out to, after all, he was your best friend, and he was there for you as your cried about your fear of being unable to find love in the conservative town of Hawkins.

That was when it was Robin’s turn to speak. You couldn’t help the feeling as your heart sank when you had discovered she had a crush of Tammy Thompson. You spirits were immediately uplifted as Steve joked about her, calling her a muppet.

Soon, the battle of Starcourt had ensued. You looked on in horror as Billy had sacrificed himself, turning your gaze away at the terrifying scene before you.

And for while, you were at peace, despite the nightmares and images from the past haunting your mind at night, it all faded away whenever you hung out with Steve and Robin. For once, the three of you could act like normal teenagers, using the jobs you guys had at Family Video to rent out the best movies to watch at either of your houses, curling up next to Robin as you feigned fear whenever you watched a horror movie. You were most definitely not a scaredy cat, of all the things you had to endure the past three years? Bitch, please. But you found any excuse you could just to be next to her.

In spite of your feelings for her, you couldn't help but keep it all in, too afraid to ruin the wonderful friendship you had with her. So you stood on the sidelines as you watched her snicker with Vicki during the basketball game, swallowing the lump in your throat when you saw her smile for someone else.

Now, things happened as they always did: they took a turn for the worst, as news upon students’ murders overtook the once quiet town of Hawkins. Yet another mystery for you all to solve as you had made it your mission to prove Eddie Munson’s innocence. Amid curses from an evil, grotesque being called Vecna, you had somehow managed to go through it without a hint of fear.

Until you had managed to find yourself in the Upside Down along with Steve, Nancy, Eddie, and Robin.

As soon as Robin jumped off the boat, you dove straight right in after her.

While you fought the demobats, you swung your weapon just in time before it had attacked Robin. In that moment, for the first time in your life, you had felt fear crawl up your spine. That was when your head filled with countless thoughts, anxious and worried about what would happen to the five of you, to Robin, in a place that was neither here nor there, a place that only feigned familiarity to mimic a darker, more dangerous version of Hawkins.

As the group traversed through the darkness, you couldn’t help but lace your arm through Robin’s, a gesture that would ensure her safety with her next to you.

Robin had noticed this, glancing in your direction with concern.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, just—just stay next to me, okay?” You say, holding her closer.

As your thoughts swarmed your head, one thought stuck out in particular: what if Robin would be Vecna’s next victim?

You pushed the thought away, shoved it to the very recesses if your mind, but for some reason it always managed to make its way back to the front Your eyebrows furrowed as you chewed on your lower lip, running your mind through what Robin’s favorite songs were, god forbid it would ever come to that. Through any and all danger that came your way, you vowed to yourself that you’d be the one bleeding on the ground before anyone or anything so much as harmed Robin. You would be there for her, protect her as much as you could, even if it was the last thing you would ever do.

Another quake has the five of you struggling to stand, the force of the shockwave caused Robin hurtling towards the ground—curse her inept coordination—but you moved just in time, wrapping your arms around her head, twisting yourself around so that she fell atop you and not the hard ground below you.

“(y/n), thanks, but um, you—you can let go now.” She had stuttered, only for you to realize you had been holding her longer than you should have, even after the tremors had ceased.

“Sorry.” You mumble as you release her. She held her hand out towards you, helping you up.

Her fingers interlace with yours, and she doesn’t ever let go even when the group continues their way towards Nancy’s house.

You weren’t scared of death. You weren’t scared of anything.

But as you glanced around the hellish world the five of you were stuck in, eye peeled for any impending danger as red lightning flashed through the sky, with Robin squeezing your hand whenever she heard even the faintest noise that could signal trouble, you felt adrenaline course through your veins.

Now you had found out your one and only fear: losing her.

After you had made contact with the others on the other side, the five of you biked towards Eddie’s trailer.

You can’t help the grin on your face, relief washing over you as the makeshift rope Dustin and the others had created drops down into the world you were trapped in.

You gestured for Robin to go first, ensuring that she would be safe, even in what seemed to be the last leg of your journey. You watched her fall on the mattress, exhaling in solace that she was finally out of this hellhole.

It was your turn to heave yourself up, and as soon as you reached the other side, landing on Eddie’s mattresses, you got up and made your way towards Robin who was by the kitchen sink, staring blankly at the wall.

Anxiety takes over your senses, you feel the hairs on the back of your neck prickle with panic. “Robin? Robin!”

She snaps out of her thoughts as you called out her name. Another wave of relief hits you as you run into her, enveloping her in your arms.

“Woah, (nickname), you alright?”

“Don’t scare me like that.” You mumble against her shoulder, tears brimming your eyes as all your anxieties make their way up the surface.

“Hey, I’m okay, see? I’m fine, it’s okay.” She says comfortingly, stroking your back to soothe you.

You pull away from her, but your arms never unwrap themselves from her waist.

She brushes your hair from your forehead, furrowing her eyebrows with concern.

“What’s wrong?”

You shake your head. “It’s just—with everything that’s happening, I’m, I’m just,” you stammer, taking in a deep breath to prevent your tears from spilling. “I’m scared, Robin. I don’t want to lose you.”

Robin’s eyes soften at your words and cradles your head so your face is tucked into where her neck and shoulder meet.

“It’s, it’s scary, I know, this isn’t like anything we’ve ever seen before. But hey, aren’t you the badass gal who fought a demogorgon with basically a flaming sword? The same person who tore through the Mind Flayer’s flesh, I mean, you literally just took down three demobats on your own, you’ve got this.”

You shake your head again, holding her closer to you.

“It’s different now, Robin.” You mumble against her skin, taking in her scent, memorizing it, in case of the worst case scenario.

“How is it different?” She mutters, smoothening out your hair.

You pull away slightly, a single tear makings it’s way past your cheek.

“I have so much more to lose now.”

“What do you mean by that?”

You sigh, through everything that was happening, it was not or never.

“I have you, now, Robin. And I never want to lose you.”

At your admission, Robin’s eyes widen slightly before going back to their original shape. Throwing all inhibitions away, she leans her forehead on yours, wiping your tears away with her thumbs.

“You’re not going to lose me, I promise.”

“And I’ll make sure of it,” you say with conviction before swallowing. “Even if it’s the last thing I do.”

Her eyes fill with sadness as she takes your hand in hers.

“Don’t say that, (y/n), we’ll be fine, we always end up fine.”

“But this isn’t like those last times, the odds are stacked against us and if we have to face those odds I am more than willing to die for you—“

“Screw the odds!” Robin exclaims. “I’m not losing you, either. Never. So please, stop thinking like that, it hurts me when you do.” Her voice shakes, cracks, as she utters out those words.

You lick your lips, nodding silently, you would never want to hurt her.

As you stare into her blue eyes that you swear you could get lost in each time you looked, she closed the gap between the two of you, placing her lips softly on yours, and you return the gesture.

In that moment, your mind finally quiets, your worries cease. In that single moment there is quiet amongst the chaos, there is light in the darkness, because Mindflayer or Vecna be damned if they ever came between the two of you.

As her lips gently move against yours, there you two are, just two teenagers holding each other lovingly, illuminated by the kitchen light. Not fighting for your lives, not risking it all for the greater good, just you and Robin.

  “eddie, no! eddie, stop! what are you doing?” you watched in horror as your boyfriend cut the makeshift rope between hawkins and the upside down.

  “eddie, please! stop!” dustin screamed, begging for him to stop.

the two of you pleaded, but eddie couldn’t be persuaded. he hopped on a bike, leading the demobats away from the trailer and down the road after him.

  “fuck, fuck, dustin this is really bad, w-we need to do something,” you panicked, looking out the window to see eddie biking away with a swarm of demobats just behind him.

  “we need to think quick! shitshitshitshitshit, what do we do?” dustin asked.

you tried to think of what eddie would do in this situation.

  “and matt won’t even let her see the rest of the team, it’s such bullshit!” you gestured wildly, ranting about your friend’s awful boyfriend. “like, who said you get to decide who she hangs out with? he’s such a controlling asshole!”

  “what a dickhead,” eddie sighed sympathetically. “i’m stressed and it’s not even my relationship! jesus h christ, i need a drink.”

he reached into the freezer, pulling out two beers and tossing one to you. “to us?”

  “to us.”

that’s it.

  “a drink! drinks! dustin, we need alcohol!” you proclaimed. “the-there should be vodka in the freezer!”

he ran off into the kitchen as you fell to your knees in front of the mattress thrown onto the middle of the floor. you began ripping the stained sheets into long strips before wrapping them around the knife end of the makeshift spears lucas and erica had made.

  “dustin, pour it on the rags,” he seemed to be in shock for a moment so you reached to shake his shoulder. “the vodka, dustin! pour the goddamn vodka!”

  “right!” he spilled the drink all over the material, soaking it with the flammable liquid. “i think we’re good, let’s go!”

the two of you ran out the door, sprinting in eddie’s direction, the swarm of demobats in the air leading you right to him.

the scene was grim; he had been pulled off his bike and onto the ground, the bats swirling around him, almost like a tornado.

reaching into your pocket, you revealed a zippo, lighting yours and dustin’s torches before rushing towards the swarm.

you swung your torches around wildly, fending off the creatures with all your might. “get the hell away from him!” you screamed, crashing the flaming weapon into the bats, knocking them to the ground as they screeched in pain.

you and dustin stood around eddie, continuing to ward off the demobats when they suddenly began to fall out of the air.

  “they’re dying!” dustin exclaimed, letting out an exasperated laugh. “they must be flambéing that son of a bitch!”

  “wheeler did craft a pretty solid plan, huh?” eddie piped up from behind you. while you and dustin were distracted, he had gotten up and began to dust himself off.

your heart dropped in utter relief at the sound of his voice. you practically launched yourself into his arms, pulling him into a bone-crushing embrace. “i’m so glad you’re alive, eddie. i was so scared you were - that you were - i don’t know what i would do without you,”

you were squeezing him tight, but he didn’t have the heart to tell you to loosen up your grip. “i’m okay, baby, i’m okay. i’m not going anywhere,”

  “i love you, i love you so much, eddie,” your voice cracked as a few tears had spilled out onto his shirt as you tucked your face into his neck.

  “hey, it’s okay, princess, no need for tears,” he thumbed under your eyes, wiping the wetness away before pressing his forehead against yours. “we made it, right? the plan is working and look at us, we fuckin’ made it. i love you so much, baby, so, so much.”

dustin cleared his throat, causing the two of you to separate. “alright, i’m tired of third-wheeling, when do i get a hug for surviving this too?”

you laughed wetly. “c’mere little man,” you and eddie hugged him tight, your boyfriend ruffling his curly locks playfully.

the three of you headed back to the trailer, you and eddie lagging behind dustin a bit.

  “when this is over, i’m never letting you out of my sight again, munson.” you laced your fingers with his.

eddie felt his heart skip a beat at your protectiveness. he wouldn’t call himself a particularly mushy guy, but he knew that no one in his life had ever shown him as much love as you had. he secretly loved the idea of constantly being by your side, in fact, he wanted nothing more than to be yours forever, but that would be a conversation for another time; the promise ring in his jacket pocket made sure of that.

  “aye aye, captain y/l/n!” eddie saluted.

Why I think ~that~ Euphoria leak is fake

just incase SPOILER WARNING for below !!

I'm sure lots of people have heard of the Euphoria spoiler regarding Fez's fate at the end of this season/the upcoming episode. incase you haven’t heard and want to, it is this:

so the spoiler states that while Fez is getting ready to go to Lexi’s play, the police raid happens. we can pretty much come to the conclusion that the first chunk of this is true, as the newly released sneak peak of episode 7 shows Fez in the suit with roses for Lexi and an empty seat front row:

bear with me because this isn’t going to make much sense as to why i think this is fake at first.

now, as for the police raid, it’s no surprise because this happens eventually because we saw a quick shot of it in the season two trailer. we also know there’s the following shot of Fez and Ash, forehead to forehead, which does fit the description of them “saying their goodbyes” in the leak

it also looks like Fez is still wearing the suit in this shot, so it further confirms the logistics of this leak. i know this post said why i think the leak is fake, not real/confirming it so thanks for bearing with me because i know up until now it seems like i’m saying the opposite

here’s where we start to get into why it’s a fake leak:

so, there have been multiple comments and posts saying that there are fake leaks out there, which is obviously no surprise. what we DO know, however, is that a chunk of these leaks have been true up to now. i’m not going to be able to fit everything in here plus i’m sure there’s evidence i’ve missed, but this is what i’ve picked up on that’s making me seriously question if the leak is factual.

first, this anonymous ask sent to tumblr user @raiisakitsune talks about how the original leaks are the ones that are true (and have thus been proven true). they talk about how this leak/theory i’m talking about on this post regarding Fez’s death during the shootout (police raid) was not posted until AFTER a leaked photo of Zendaya and Maude came out. because of this, we can come to the conclusion that this particular leak WAS NOT POSTED WITH THE ORIGINAL (and real) LEAKS! it was posted at a different and much later date. lots of other “leaks”have been deemed fake since the posting of the original (true) leaks, which means it’s hard to 100% trust that this particular one is real. below is the ask that sent in this info i’m discussing in this point

second, euphoria has a history of planting leaks to throw fans off track. reddit user u/Usual-Clothes-2497 posted this comment on the leak (which was posted and found on r/EuphoriaLeaks. incase you don’t want to read all this, that reddit user just mentioned brings up how Maddy’s stunt double was seen walking around set for season one covered in blood, which of course now we know was done merely just to throw people off. it was a fake leak planted to raise suspicions and create a bigger “shock factor” when the show actually dropped. this is the discussion from reddit:

another important thing this reddit user brings up is actually my third point: why would Fez’s stunt double be allowed to post a photo of him seemingly on set, in a suit, covered in blood?? wouldn’t that be a MAJOR spoiler that he could be fired for?? for those of you that don’t know, this photograph of the stunt double has been circling around for some time now, but it just doesn’t make any logical sense as to why it would be allowed to be posted/leaked or even taken in the first place. coming from someone who is an almost-film-school-graduate, it is common knowledge that high profile projects, like for example marvel movies, and in this case, Euphoria, have extremely tight wraps on what can and cannot be shared from cast members, crew members, writers, etc. a member of this production wouldn’t be this “loose” about such a huge and revealing spoiler, especially if they know how fast things circulate online through fans and not to mention how quickly they’d be fired. i’m linking a post made by another tumblr user that is a member of the film and television industry that makes similar and smart points as to why these leaks are most likely fake. also, here is that photo of a blood-covered Fez stunt double. (there may be more, i just haven’t seen them)

the fourth and final reason is connecting back to what i mentioned in my second point, which is: Euphoria has a history of purposely planting leaks. they’ve also been really good about deleting real leaks as soon as they circulate, but have been known to leave up fake ones or plants they purposely spread to cause a diversion from the real leaks, as mentioned by reddit user u/localtallgirl and in the screenshot of their comment below posted on R/EuphoriaLeaks

anyways, this is all i have to say on this matter, but feel free to reblog with more evidence and thoughts on this. of course, this is all mere speculation and just a shot-in-the-dark guess of why i personally think this leak has lots of potential to be fake. none of us really actually know if this leak is real, if it’s a plant, if it’s made up by a fan or what. plus, it very well could be that my entire post is inaccurate. but that’s what theorizing in a fandom is all about so we’ll just have to wait it out and see what really happens 🤷‍♀️

On a similar but unrelated to the movie note, can we just talk about how toa started with Jim having 0 dads and (if strickler and blinky live to the end) will end with 2 dads? Like I just really feel happy for him that he has two dads who actually figured out how to put the past behind them to not have any infighting between them so that both of them are healthy father figures. Jim has already been through literal hell and back losing his actual humanity in the process so if he loses one of them, I'm going to be really pissed because at this point, this is just Jim torture porn. Y'all know how as SpongeBob SquarePants went on, the show just became Squidward torture porn? It's starting to feel that way for toa and I really hope they cut the shit by the ending

YESSSSSSS Someone finally doesn't treat toby like a fat waste of space who messes stuff up!!! I think out of all the characters that would have been most deserving of a rewrite, it's Toby. hi! thank u sm!! i wouldn’t say i like lok more than atla, i love them both for different reasons!! it just depends on the vibe i’m in (recently i’ve been in a lok vibe can you tell). i think there are parts of atla that lok is much better at portraying and vice versa, but i don’t like comparing the two shows bc they are v v different (which is where a lot of the hate comes from). i’ll b honest, i was v hesitant to watch lok bc atla was the most formative show for me growing up but now i love it so much! i can’t say whether you will like the show bc everyone’s different but i will say if you go into the show hoping for an atla pt. 2 you won’t like it. if you are open to change in the atla universe and want something that feels familiar but also v different you will love it. i agree with the idea that lok is a more ‘grown up’ version of atla, and for that reason i want to (as objectively as i can) give a brief breakdown of the differences b/w both shows:

PLOT:

this is the first HUGE deviation: atla is very character driven where lok is very plot driven. 

each has it’s pros and cons, but bc the plot changes with each season of lok while the show remains plot driven this leads to some characters feeling underdeveloped. this wasn’t necessarily the writers’ faults, they went into each season not knowing if it would be the last, so there isn’t a whole lot of time to have character driven episodes like atla’s ‘tales of ba sing se’ or ‘appa’s lost days’. which leads me to! 

CHARACTERS:

here’s the honest truth - lok has much deeper, complicated, and developed female characters than atla. both in numbers and in growth, lok succeeds at this. 

lok is v woman-centric with many women of all ages who have complicated relationships with themselves, their family, their loved ones, etc. they don’t try to make their women likeable or perfect, they are all allowed to be loud and angry and right and wrong and they’re allowed to make mistakes and grow. they’re people. even if a character doesn’t have entire episodes dedicated to them, they still have arcs that span seasons and make them feel like real people. the women of lok made me realize how much more we could have had from the women of atla (not that they aren’t amazing or well developed, it’s just deeper characterization)

korra has an arc that rivals zuko. i could go into it but i don’t want to give spoilers :^) and even parallels him in an episode in book 4 called ‘korra alone’ (the best lok episode sorry).

for this reason every woman in my life who has seen all of lok has loved it (actually i am the only woman i know who doesn’t have a preference of lok over atla) 

VILLAINS:

the villains in lok are much more complicated than in atla. they all are compelling and make us ask questions about ourselves as the villains hold ideals that we all believe in but take them to extremes. for example:

if a group of people feel they are being persecuted and demand equality, how far is too far? what if a group has genuine grievances but resorts to violent guerilla warfare and terrorism against innocents as that is the only way to gain equality?

what if a new leader arises who wants to take down a monarchy that has only brought pain and suffering to a country? what if this new leader truly loves their country and will do anything to ensure everyone prospers after centuries of the rest of the world allowing them to be degraded by idiotic monarchs? what if this new leader who is wildly popular among the masses becomes a dictator? do you replace the dictator who loves their country and has made true strides in progress for an airhead monarch with no idea of how to rule a country? 

WORLDBUILDING 

this is where lok loses a lot of people who are atla purists (this and the plot driven nature of the show where they are attached to atla being character driven)

lok takes place 70 years after atla and it shows! the world has grown! it has changed! the places that look the same (ba sing se and the earth kingdom villages) are shown to be poorly led and in political disarray. they didn’t evolve in the last 70 years because there was no leadership to move them forward.

the first thing i noticed (outside of the snazzy 20s music) was the bending. i’m gonna be honest, i did not like the bending at first. atla shows bending as a very classical art form, so to see it has changed so much in lok worried me at first. once i began to appreciate the attention to detail as to how a world evolves, i realized that the changes in bending are one of the coolest parts of the show. 

it’s not completely different. it’s just different enough where you can see the logical progression of time that would come through in the real world. it makes sense for lightning bending to become more common! it makes sense for more people to know metalbending as toph teaches a new generation of earth benders who continue to pass it on to others! it makes sense for the styles of bending to have changed in places because it’s a living art!

looking back on it, the bending feels like this: atla bending is like reading a classic like jane austen or shakespeare where lok bending feels like reading a contemporary novel. you can see the resemblance, you can see where the younger generation gets their inspiration, but the language has evolved. it’s so cool.

EDIT: just wanted to add real quick that bc they have the same creators and writers the writing of lok feels v similar to the writing of atla! it has the same charm and depth while also showing growth. so you don’t need to worry about the writing styles/characterizations feeling totally unbalanced. anyways!

EDIT AGAIN: if you don’t mind v minor spoilers i reccomend watching the trailers for book 3 and book 4. they don’t give away much but give a good idea of the tone of the show and might give a better insight as to if it’s for you

I’m very proud of my meta, and especially the SHEER AMOUNT of it I have produced still boggles me mind. Y’all remember when I was creative and thoughtful??? LOL S4 dragged me hard hahah. I still try to write S4 meta, just not as much as I used to. I like speculating, I truly do, but I have so little free time these days because of the nature of my full time job, so I tend to just... do nothing LOL. I find Fic Reccing really relaxing when you have nearly 800 bookmarks. I’m worried I’m becoming stale though. Oh well. I’m just trying to leave my mark here. <3

Thirdly, HAHHAH Thank you for your compliment about my replies to my asks; I genuinely wish I could get more asks finished every day, but I tend to ramble, as you can see, and I just... don’t finish them in a timely manner. Honestly, it’s a relief when I don’t know something because I can then get the community involved to help me out AND I also get new fic recs that way too LOL. I also draft a TONNE of asks and when I do that, I tend to just keep adding MORE and MORE and MORE so I have to post them, LOL. 

And finally: My fave episode is TAB; it was the episode I studied the closest and my analysis of the trailer is my “claim to fame”. I just love it to bits. It’s the episode I’ve watched the most. S3 is my fave season, and it’s the SEASON I’ve watched the most, no less than 30 or 40 times. Season 2, then 1. I have only seen S4 like 5 times in full total, and horribly enough, TFP is the most-watched episode: I watched the Leak, the airdate, and I went and saw it in the theatres because I already bought the ticket before it aired so I just... didn’t care. And then at least 3 more times in Watchalongs. So yeah :| I still haven’t watched the BluRay I bought, but I hated having an incomplete set so I bought it when it went on sale fore 10 bucks LOL.

But yeah, S1 and 2 I watched together, and I LOVED the show. I joined fandom the summer before S3 aired, and S3 is when I REALLY got into the fandom. I’ve been pretty much here since then, about 7 years I think now. When I saw S4, it was incredulity and disappointment with it. That’s really it. I’m still a fence sitter these days about the series as a whole, but I’m leaning more and more to “no S5 for at least 3 more years” kinda thing. Just... everyone involved seems so disinterested in the show these days, minus Mofftiss to keep pushing the Sherlock™ Brand to make money.

Getting my Showdown Bandit theory out before MatPat beats me to the punch

Gonna put it under a cut to avoid spoilers

Also gonna tag my fellow theory fren @adobe-outdesign TL;DR: This is a story about coming to terms with your own existence

Long Version Based on everything in the first chapter (And a few people making connections between this and Bendy possibly being in the same universe) here is the conclusion I’ve reached Like a certain Joey Drew, the creator of the Showdown Bandit Show used black magic to bring the puppets to life; to make them truly animated and alive, to have a show like no other! But of course something went horribly wrong. As we’re told, the Showdown Bandit Show was cancelled abruptly and suddenly at the peak of it’s popularity, and no one is quite sure why...

There are three laws in this universe that are repeatedly hammered in, in both the game and in the trailers:

Play Your Part Guard Your Strings Don’t Look Up

Translation: Don’t ask questions, do what you’re meant to do

The something that went horribly wrong was that the puppets started to become self-aware. They began to realize that they are just what they are; puppets being strung around and forced to perform. Their lives are just a show for children. 

Everyone took this revelation differently.

Miss Undertaker is very OBVIOUSLY aware of her true nature; she’s the one enforcing the three laws after all. Notes from Lookout in the game inform us that something happened that deeply troubled her, but she brushed it off pretending to be okay. She knows she’s just a puppet, but she wants to continue living the lie and is making sure no one else questions their existence so they can all continue on with the show. She could even be directly working with the Puppeteer

The Banker is very timid and scared, and he is questioning his existence; but is too frightened to act upon it

The Doctor is in on it with Miss Undertaker, but I’ll get to him in a moment

Penny IS self-aware, but presumably she’s seen what happens to those who step out of line, those who look up, so she yanked out her own eyes and that combined with the revelation has driven her mad

Which brings us to Bandit himself:

Presumably the inciting incident is that one day in the middle of a show; Bandit  became self-aware and had some kind of meltdown that frightened the children and ruined the whole show. 

And now... the creator is holed up in the old studio, still clinging to his precious show, and going through a process of trying again, and again to have ONE Bandit puppet that won’t become self-aware; in some vain hope the show will continue again

It’s obvious that there has been more than one Bandit, and we’re NOT the first. You get your gun from the corpse of another Bandit, Faceless IS a Bandit, and Undertaker even remarks: “I haven’t unboxed a Bandit that wasn’t quick on the draw!” also there’s the ominous line at the end: “You Bandits come a dime a dozen and no one bats a wooden eye”

Now, the very start of the game: Undertaker is searching for someone, who I believe to be Lookout; another puppet who became self-aware but got away. Undertaker then spots Bandit’s box and is genuinely surprised to see him

“I didn’t drag you up here on purpose, but if you’re here, it must be what HE wants” She says, while subtly pointing up to the ceiling

He, the Puppeteer:

It’s time for another attempt at a perfect Bandit that will do as he’s told.

The Strings are all a lie; Bandit is perfectly capable of moving on his own while he’s in the box; it’s only after he stumbles out do the strings latch onto him and seem to cause him pain at first. The strings are only there to keep the puppets in line and in control. We KNOW this because the Stringless are enemy marionettes that are perfectly mobile without their strings!

The Doctor reinforces the idea that you even need strings; he’s in on it with Undertaker. He even remarks how it’s yet another Bandit he’s tending to: “Another day, another Bandit...”

Faceless I’ll bet isn’t even a villain; I wager that he’s the original Bandit, and him carrying a scythe to cut your strings is him trying to FREE Bandit!

So where does this even go? How does all this even turn out? And what did the ending of that chapter mean? I couldn’t tell you, this is just a baseline for what I believe to be going on.

My Thoughts on The Shipper

so i finally wrote my thoughts about this series lol. this isn’t gonna be really professional or in depth, i just wrote my initial thoughts after finishing the last episode. 

-SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT!-

okay so it's been a fat minute since this ended and i'm now just writing this, oops. anyways, when the trailer for this first came out i was a little skeptical, i didn't know what to think really, but i decided to watch it anyways bc it sounded interesting, and holy shit was i right. also bc ohm was in it lol, i love him an unhealthy amount. the whole concept is something that i usually love and adore, in this case i did like it, the whole body switching thing, but some instances were questionable. like pan having to kiss her own body??? and having kim's body kiss khet, i know that it's pan in the body but like?? couldn't they have just used her body for that scene, you know so it didn't look like incest? they did it in previous scenes and the one time they don’t do it is one she has to kiss khet in his brother’s body. idk, that just really makes me feel weird. i know khet wanted to be close with kim but wasn't that a little to close? also how the fuck did we get a kiss scene between those two but not between kim and way???? i feel robbed. but it was really sweet how much kim and way truly loved and cared for each other. i still don't completely understand kim's point of view with the whole way going to la and him going to japan thing, bc like i know he wants way to live his own life and stuff, that was the whole point of him going through all that effort, but like way really wanted to be with him and if they both wanted to be together then why not just be together?? well now they can't be together bc kim is dead..... but if he hadn't died! oh yeah, i also want to talk about soda, i absolutely adore her, i just think she's really cute and i'm glad that she eventually got someone to care for her like khet cares for pan. btw pan and soda are the cutest friends and i like how khet looked out for the both of them bc he knew that soda was important to pan. i also need to express just how much i LOVE way, like he's up there in my list of favorite characters, with fighter (why r u) and sarawat (2gether), i think i have a type yall lmao. idk i just love him, like how he left that group chat of guys taking secret videos of girls, and how he told kim to leave it as well, how he did anything and everything to stay close to kim, how he was honest with phingphing about his feelings and everything, just small things like that made me slowly fall in love with him over time. i would die for that boy. don't get me started on the whole teacher thing, once again i know kim only did it in order to help way, but that was just weird to watch, slightly funny just bc of how she acted around him, but still weird lol. i know i've been all over the place with this but i'm just going as i remember things lol. the scenes with jennie were also hilarious btw. okay i think i'm finished. in conclusion would i watch this again? probably not, but did i find it entertaining while i was watching it, yes. after finishing the series i think i would consider this a bl bc there are two boys in it who love each other, so like there u go, it's bl.  i do wish we got to see more of kim and way together, can this be like he's coming to me where way can see kim as a ghost or something, and khet and than can be twins too lmao. okay i'm really finished now.

ok so i haven't played kh3 yet (i know, i know but im rewatching and catchING UP shhh) but i have actively sought out yozora spoilers when they came out and i do know of versus xiii plot speculation bc i avidly watched over them when it was still in production. this is ALL SPECULATION, obviously. but we love to speculate don’t we?? under a read more bc it’s gonna be a long one bois.

ok let’s start from the beginning, most of you probably heard/read on this already but just to cover my bases

name translations

yozora [夜空] = night sky

sora [空] = sky

verum rex [latin] = true king

noctis lucis caelum [latin] = light of the night sky (”In terms of the translation, it's very possible that "Light of the Night Sky" is the intended translation. Storywise, it could be interpreted as the "light of expiring souls" that Noctis can see.")

when sora ask’s the nameless star who’s heart she is, she replies, “no one’s anymore. they took away my name - everything about me.” this can literally be taken in-game as she is formless with no name. but can also be derived by the fact that the character stella was essentially cut from the ffxv game and replaced with lunafreya

on noctis’ and stella’s unique abilities

as it’s been mentioned before noctis has this ability to see the “light of expiring souls.” the ability to see expiring souls. this was said about him, “prince of the lucis kingdom, noctis luci caelum. possessing eyes which can sense the death of others.” i know this quote for a fact was intended to be said of his original character. it was in his bio, in official translations, it was all over before. i even made a graphic on this exact quote 5 years ago. now his bio obviously is rewritten to be about ffxv’s noctis.

noctis’ eyes are blue, ordinarilly but when he’s summoning his eyes turn a red color.

sound familiar? yozora’s blue and red eyes.

stella still has her original quotes in the wiki because she was cut from the game but she too has the ability to see the light of expiring souls. she tells him on their chance meeting, “you can see the light, right? so can i.” 

noctis is the prince of a kingdom that worships a goddess of death named etro. she is said to open the doors to the heavens to welcome the souls of the dead. but when the doors burst open the light shines down from heaven and releases all the dead souls back into the world of the living and those who can see this light are granted with power. sound familiar? the kh3′s final world would essentially be equivalent to the afterlife, heaven. (wait a foockin moment why is sora in this world then.................) they also both have prevalent themes of light and dark between a door. i can see how nomura could weave a rebooted versus xiii concept into kingdom hearts

on the endings of kh3 remind 

in the ending of remind noctis is shown waking from his supposed “dream” and so the iconic quote comes along, “i’ve been having these weird dreams lately... like is any of this for real, or not?” 

DREAMS, ok dreams are huge. in versus xiii trailers we are constantly being shown noctis sleeping and it has been a notion that tabata’s team has continued to use in ffxv.

tabata’s team even came out with ffxv platinum demo in which young noctis is navigating through his dreams. A convenient coincidence that he also fights with toy weapons against some toy enemies lol. 

they also released the omen trailer which basically was a total dream sequence. he has never fought with lunafreya in the game. most of these scenes weren’t even in the game except for the scene of him fighting against soldiers and falling through the floor. 

which again came out in the game as a dream. where they a separate reality perhaps? noctis had/has the ability to traverse “dreams”... or alternate realities? no clue. 

on the BAD ending of kh3 remind

ok i have like 3 different ideas on yozora’s idea of “saving sora” = defeating/crystallizing him (but tbh only one of them makes sense LMAO [the 3rd one if u dont want to read the others])

this first idea is where “seeing the light of expiring souls” comes back up. AND where the TIN FOIL HATS come ON. in versus xiii, i cannot stress this enough, it has been SPECULATED, that stella has been dead all along. and that all the instances he’s seen her were all his own dreams, hallucinations and/or his own ability to see expiring souls. the “fact” of this came from the fact that the only times we’ve seen stella was when she was alone with noctis. she’s not fully done with the real world but her light is expiring. and that see too can see lights because she herself is one. to “save her” he fights her so she can go to the afterlife (?) 

second idea is also..... umm. i swear, I SWEAR i remember reading up on noctis being somehow related to the goddess of death, etro a long time ago. and that his people helped in guiding the lights of the expiring souls. so in a sense this ties in with the first theory in that he’s fighting these lost souls to save them 

the third one is the one that has at least some basis. in the final fantasy universe crystallization is a recurring thing. but to be completely vague. people’s memories can also crystallize into crystals known as fragments, found throughout the timeline. people can crystallize after losing a battle of life and death and come back to life. some people when crystallized can be sucked into a new unseen realm.

speculation of an actual real to life upcoming verum rex game 

yozora believes that the final world in which he meets “sora” isn’t the real world. “no, this isn’t the real world, and i am here. but this isn’t what i really look like. how’d you recognize me as yozora?” the fact that he is aware that his appearance is not how it used to be is a clue. it is a major way for nomura to squeeze in a real-life game and connection without actually showing the game. he’s done it before. with final fantasy characters. someone link the post pleaseeee (i in hindsight should’ve just reblogged it or liked but now i cant find it ;;) but i read it recently that some final fantasy games were promoted in the toy store in the toy store chapter. if these characters that sora meets in his own franchise are from another franchise, what’s stopping nomura from hinting at an upcoming franchise this way?

Movie Review: Frozen II (Spoilers)

Spoiler Warning: I am posting this review a couple of days after it first airs in the U.K, so if you haven’t yet seen the movie, and I strongly recommend you do, then don’t read on until you have.

LGBT Representation:

Alright so I’ll get into character analyses shortly but first of all I just want to talk about the LGBT representation in this movie, because my takeaway from it in this movie is completely different to what seems to be everyone else’s takeaway from it. LGBT representation is very important to me particularly in an all-age property so I wanted to spotlight it.

Now the main issue I see is that people are still insisting that the LGBT representation is that of Elsa being a member of the LGBT community. This is something that emerged after the first movie with Elsa being one of few “Disney Princesses” (despite the fact she is a Queen and neither she nor Anna are official members of said brand) not to have a love interest in the first movie or even this movie, outwardly.

Yes, while no one is openly depicted as an LGBT character in this movie, good old Disney, Elsa is still being shown in that LGBT light to some fans because of two or three character traits.

Firstly there’s the theory that her not feeling like she belongs in Arendelle is because she is, sorry for this, the only gay in the village and not knowing how to handle it. Secondly there’s her new outfit which she acquires at the start of the third act in the movie which is white with rainbow accents...fans believe this is a clear nod to the rainbow flag but to be fair it could just simply be to represent the Aurora Borealis aka the Northern Lights.

Thirdly, despite the first teaser trailer giving fans the completely wrong idea about Elsa’s potential love interest in this movie, who turned about to be a young version of her mother, Elsa does get close with new very minor girl Honeymaren. There is no evidence that either Honeymaren is an LGBT character but people have suggested that their cosy chats border on the flirtatious.

However, I personally do not think the LGBT representation is on Elsa or Honeymaren. I think the LGBT representation in this movie is in fact Honeymaren’s brother Ryder voiced by Jason Ritter. I swear he flirts with Kristoff at least three times in this movie for the brief time he is in it.

Of course all of this is just speculation, but the theory of Elsa, Honeymaren and/or Ryder being potential members of the LGBT community is a major plus both for Disney and for this movie.

Characters:

Elsa:

It can’t be not true that Elsa is the best character not only in this movie but also this franchise as a whole. Not only is she the first real instance of the combination between Disney Princess and Superhero, but also there is no denying the journey and the transformation Elsa goes on from care free child to fearful teenager to in-control young woman.

This character development alone is not only relatable and representative for many if not all young girls coming of age, but also she is both stylish, humble and flawed in a realistic sense...as realistic as someone with ice powers can be I mean.

Now by flaws, I am mainly referring to her inept ability at ruling Arendelle, three times now she has effectively abdicated her throne either for her own reasoning or to actually protect the kingdom, I am more annoyed with Anna for these decisions which I’ll get into when talking about her, but it was quite clear from the first movie alone that Elsa never wanted to be queen. She runs away when her powers are discovered by the people, she then goes off to find out the mystery of her past, she finally abdicates completely and makes Anna queen so she can go off and live in the Enchanted Forest amongst the Northuldra people while not exactly joining them.

Having said that, she absolutely does the right thing by her because, not only is it important to both understand and be completely comfortable with yourself, but also this was where she was always meant to be.

Elsa’s fashion in this movie steps up from the first movie not only in colour but also in style. Gone are those heavy, coverall gowns and now we have light, bright and flowing gowns. Also leggings, Elsa is really only the second “Disney Princess” to wear leggings after Jasmine and it is really good to see someone in that “Disney Princess” role be versatile in fashion.

My favourite three outfits of Elsa’s are her vivid pink nightgown, her travelling outfit and her last outfit when she embraces her role as the fifth spirit. Something about Elsa with her hair down and flowing that really added another layer of power to that transformation “Show Yourself” scene.

Her powers are also plused here, the lady gets a freekin’ water horse which she could freeze to ride on water! Seeing Elsa riding her new steed across the water to stop the tidal wave from flooding Arendelle is the most fiercely stunning sequence I have seen in any movie animated or live-action.

Also her crystal manifestation, which emulated the elemental runes, bursting out from her like an outcry after she sings about wanting to know what it all means and then having them all fall to the ground effectively like hail. I thought her creating the ice palace in the first movie couldn’t be topped but her powers are kicked up here.

She even has a sort of attack move with her powers as she was shown to briefly create an ice snowflake to combat the water spirit who later becomes her steed. 

When she finally finds Ahtohallan and discovers she is the fifth element and starts seeing all those memories of her past and singing “Show Yourself” with her mother, just watching her literally walk through memory lane with all those frozen versions of her memories and reacting different to different ones, like with the Duke of Wesselton where she laughed and Hans who she instantly crumbled and even her singing “Let It Go” which she reacted awkwardly to, all of this was just splender and made me particularly well up.

Then you have her discovering the truth of the past where her grandfather was revealed to have villainous tendencies, I’m not going to say he’s an outright villain but he did kill the Northundra leader and start the war which hid the Enchanted Forest from the world, the fact she literally went to far down and froze to death just like the opening song foreshadowed was also very emotional.

But on that note of finding out there is that darkness in her family, it did remind me a lot of the Once Upon a Time Frozen arc when they introduced the Snow Queen Ingrid as Elsa and Anna’s aunt who had the same powers as Elsa and who was villainous for being misunderstood. They could have copped out and done a similar story but the fact it was routed into Elsa and Anna’s own history in terms of their family was a nice touch.

However, it did give me possibly my favourite line of the movie which is “Fear is the true enemy” in retaliation to hearing her grandfather say that magic is evil. This line can be true of any type of prejudice, I’m thinking of Homophobia but it can also be racism and even sexism, that for an animated Disney movie rated U to accomplish this level of thought is outstanding.

Idina Menzel may not be the most emotive actress but I love her, and what she may lack in her speech she more than makes up for in her singing. Also the fact that Elsa has such emotive facial expressions and the animation and character designs here are so fluid, that it makes Elsa almost seem like a real person.

Olaf:

Josh Gad as Olaf was definitely something I’ve been looking forward to revisiting especially after Olaf’s Frozen Adventure received a very icy reception. I didn’t really care for it, much like any of the Frozen shorts that have come but I’m really happy with him here.

I really liked the idea of exploring Olaf being a child because, I think with this movie taking place a couple years after the first one, Olaf is really only a toddler, so he acts like a toddler.

The fact Olaf sees the world in such innocence and beauty really resonates with little kids watching this movie and hopefully allows them to get out of it what Olaf gets out of it which is not understanding the world as a child but having to grow up and face reality.

I wasn’t crazy about his song, again like the first movie I feel it wasn’t as grand as the rest of the songs but I did like the message behind it of things not making sense to Olaf now but will make sense when he grows up.

By far the funniest moments of this movie are when Olaf reenacts the events of the first movie for the people trapped in the Enchanted Forest and also at the very end after the credits when he reenacts the events of this movie for Marshmallow and the Snowgies. I just loved again that child-like interpretation and bluntness of events. “Anna and Elsa separated but it’s okay because at least they still have their parents! Their parents are dead!” My screening could not stop laughing at that point.

Speaking of death, there is death in this movie, both what you see and what is open to interpretation. Elsa effectively dies as she is frozen solid much like how Anna is in the first movie, but Olaf’s death came as a consequence of Elsa’s death due to him being enchanted by Elsa. Possibly because this whole thing takes place after the “Show Yourself” scene and Elsa finally being true to who she is and of course because Olaf is the innocent dying, it really made me sad.

I was thrilled he came back, of course I knew he was going to come back. However, I did hear that early scripts had him staying dead but I don’t think that would have gone down very well with audiences and particularly merchandising because after Anna and Elsa merch I know Olaf is up there, although I think he may have competition after this movie...we’ll get to Bruni.

Also in keeping with the idea of Olaf being a child, I found it fascinating that he was experiencing new emotions in this movie such as anger, without actually getting angry he just felt it and didn’t know how to handle it. A little bit like with Groot in the MCU, I do hope we maybe see Olaf age or mature and experience the emotions that everyone experiences growing up. I know snow can’t really age in that way but it would be very interesting to see.

Speaking of the properties of snow, I also found the concept of water having memory interesting. It does play into the Disney/Fantastical element of the almost absurd but in a sense you want it to be true, like Aladdin’s flying carpet or even how woodland animals can help clean.

I’m not so certain about the cop-out of no longer giving Olaf his own flurry, yes they explained it as rather than it being a cloud simply being a kind of coat which was beautiful to see lit-up and everything, but it just seemed like the animators not wanting to animate a snow cloud constantly, even using the excuse that it only appears in hot weather was proven false because it was sunny numerous times in this movie and nothing appeared.

Olaf is still one of my favourite characters both in this movie and in Disney in general, I think he’s fun, I love his innocence and a lot of that is down to Josh Gad’s vocal performance. I can no longer think of Josh Gad without thinking of Olaf but in a way that’s not a bad thing.

Anna:

There was a massive opportunity missed from this movie which was not spotlighting the fact that Anna almost had PTSD from the events of the first movie. She wanted the status quo to remain how it was in the moment at the start of the movie and was desperate to keep her loved ones safe.

I don’t particularly know what purpose Anna served in this movie outside of living in denial of everything going on. Yes it is a noble deed to want to keep your loved ones safe, however, Anna should have known that not only Elsa discovering her origins but also the two sisters finding out about their mother’s history was not only important but I feel necessary. Finding out what happened to their parents, why they went off, even how they met. 

But instead we have Anna constantly wanting to be the mother of the group and look after everyone, except for Kristoff. I will talk about Kristoff in his section but seriously these two went from being the ideal couple in the first movie to “Why the heck are you to together?” in this movie.

All of this is why what made her hitting rock bottom after both Elsa and Olaf had “died” so important and her realising that and building herself back up. Again, like Olaf, I didn’t really like her song but I appreciated the meaning behind it.

It was from this point that Anna showed true signs of not only being a leader but also actual competency. I mean once again both Elsa and Anna abandon Arendelle, yes Anna has done it twice in the hopes of saving it which is noble, but she goes from leaving a man she just met and got engaged to in charge without knowing him for more than five minutes, to leaving Rock Trolls in charge. Yes Grand Pabbie is at least responsible for an entire tribe but seriously?

However, after she realises what has to be done to right the wrongs of the past, her selfless decision to destroy the dam and flood Arendelle to free the Enchanted Forest was impressive because obviously the kingdom can be rebuilt and the people were safe in the Rock Troll Valley.

Now of course, everything turned out fine because Anna unknowingly revived Elsa by getting the dam broken down and she stopped the tidal wave from destroying Arendelle, but Anna didn’t know that when she decided to do it and she still chose to it, and made the old Arendelle guard listen to her.

This is how she proved herself as queen, so that when Elsa made her queen so she herself could go and live in the Enchanted Forest, she earned it. She’s queen, she has Kristoff as a fiancé and obviously she and Elsa will keep a strong bond between Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest.

Kristen Bell is Kristen Bell, you know she was born for this type of role and this type of world. Having said that, again she was almost pushed to the background or was making me want to push her to the background because of her constant complaining. But she was still very good and the main core four cast continue to be a big selling point for this franchise.

Kristoff:

I find it ironic that the title of this franchise is Frozen and that he is an ice seller because they effectively fridged Kristoff in this movie.

Kristoff’s role in this movie is pretty much the one-note version of Bernard’s from The Rescuers Down Under, in that his story throughout this movie was trying to propose to Anna and yet constantly failing. Now granted, he goes to greater extravagance to do so than the mouse did but it takes them both the length of their movies to simply learn it’s now how you say it it’s just saying it.

On that note, I felt no chemistry between Anna and Kristoff in this movie. They both think the other one abandoned them part way through this movie and Anna particularly doesn’t really seem to care.

As I said before, when Kristoff and Ryder had their scenes together, I felt more chemistry between them than I did from Kristoff for Anna. Also Kristoff and Ryder are more suited. They both love reindeer, they both talk for their reindeer, and also I got the sense that maybe Ryder actually liked Kristoff in that way, as he seemed upset that Kristoff didn’t ride off with him.

Kristoff did give me one of the best moments of the movie though which was his song in the form of an 80s/90 pop balled video. It was one of the most bizarre choices this movie could have made, but considering you have Jonathan Groff and didn’t let him do what Jonathan Groff is known for doing in the first movie it more than makes up for that.

Once again I don’t feel like he contributed much to the actual story and genuinely felt like he could have been cut and nothing would change, but it is good having a male presence in this movie who is human so I give him credit for that.

Northundra:

I really enjoyed this tribe, the native-american qualities they had really helped separate them from the citizens of Arendelle. Both Native-American and Australian Aborigines I feel were portrayed rather well in the tribe.

Yelena, Ryder and Honeymaren were really the only three spotlighted in the tribe and I felt that is all they really needed.

However, we also know from this movie that Elsa and Anna’s mother, Queen Iduna, was Northundra...which kind of makes sense as a child because she has some colouring, but as an adult she’s Caucasian...and Anna and Elsa are clearly Caucasian.

I mean it’s slightly obvious the Northundra weren’t on the cards in the first movie, however simply having Iduna being of that race would have made more sense.

Speaking of the first movie. The Northundra here have a chant they perform when Elsa and Anna realise they have Northundra heritage, but this sounds like the same chant from the opening of the first movie which leads into “Frozen Heart”. So maybe they were foreshadowed?

Spirits:

Alright so I didn’t know how much there was to talk about the four spirits that seemingly guard the Enchanted Forest and whom Elsa awakened and apparently made angry towards the start of this movie so I thought I would talk about them collectively here in the order they appear in Elsa’s vision during “Into the Unknown”.

Fire:

Two things I love about the fire spirit, the first is that it’s fire form is this very vibrant pink colour and I’m always a fan of fire having different colours, I prefer green but pink works well here I guess.

The second thing I love about it is Bruni, who is the actual fire spirit and I don’t think named ever in this movie by name. However, I have loved Bruni since his one main shot in the trailer, I love how cute he is, I love the fact he’s another reptilian being a salamander, after Pascal from Tangled being a chameleon.

Also, Bruni may have about as much screen time here as Pua the pig from Moana but he is just one of Elsa’s new animal sidekicks and unlike most of the Disney Princesses, this queen has two magical creatures as animal sidekicks. I think the only princess in that category is Mulan with Mushu.

As I mentioned before with Olaf’s merch, I do feel that Bruni is a potential competitor for beating him in merch sales. I think Olaf, Sven and Bruni all have plush toy qualities, but Bruni has that added cuteness and he’s new.

Water:

Elsa’s other magical animal sidekick is the water spirit known as The Nøkk, who is a mythological Scandinavian water spirit in the shape of a horse...with a waterfall mane.

Not only is this a cool pet anyway the fact Elsa can freeze and ride it is just epic. Who wouldn’t want a water spirit horse. 

Earth:

Alright so I can’t remember when the Earth Giants first appear, whether or not they emerge during the earthquake that took over Arendelle or if they appeared in the Enchanted Forest but I did enjoy them.

I don’t exactly know when Elsa tamed them, it did seem that if anyone did Anna did by getting the dam broken.

Air:

I enjoyed Gail, I thought giving what is essentially a tornado that turns into a light breeze a name also gives it character.

But once again, while Elsa broke free of the tornado, Olaf was the one who named it and as such wasn’t he the one to tame it?

I did like how Gail became the messenger for the two kingdoms also.

Songs:

Alright so like always, I’ll be talking about these songs in order of my favourites.

Into the Unknown:

While not as groundbreaking as “Let It Go” but it is powerful, moving and delivered beautifully by both Idina Menzel and AURORA who is credited as “The Voice” that do that “Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah” sound that I want as an alarm tone.

I loved how Idina managed to match AURORA and almost harmonise with it, I love the message of being scared of the unknown but pushing yourself into it, the presentation of the performance was beautiful particularly when she went into that black space with the production going on around her.

It’s my favourite song in the movie and everything about it was just brilliant.

I do also enjoy the Panic! At the Disco version that plays over the end credits, it’s definitely a better pop version of a movie song to Demi Lovato’s version and I feel has a better mainstream future than it too.

Show Yourself:

This song made me emotional, and not many songs do that. I feel maybe it was the build-up to Elsa finally discovering who she was meant to be, the duet with her mother, or the fact she had that walk through her history in ice sculptures, but something welled up inside me and I love it.

The song is about realising who you are and being true to who you are. It’s something I feel anyone can relate to and the fact it’s in a duet with her deceased mother is just the icing, pardon the pun.

Also, this is where Elsa gets her new look, starting off with her taking her hair down and then her updated ice-blue dress transforming into her final white dress with rainbow accents.

Idina Menzel once again dominates with her vocals here but also Evan Rachel Wood matches her quite well.

Lost in the Woods:

I loved Jonathan Groff’s singing in Glee, from “Highway to Hell” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” to “Rolling in the Deep” he had such a range vocally that, despite hating the character, I loved him singing.

This is why it was criminal that the only “singing” Kristoff did in the first Frozen was that “Reindeer are better than people” lullaby song which made a comeback here at the start of this song and made me almost give up on Kristoff completely.

However, when you get passed that and Sven actually singing, you have a rather good song in the style of an 80s/90s pop ballad music video. Instantly I thought of “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams and, despite not liking that particular song, I loved this and the arrangement of the performance.

Having Kristoff lean up against a tree as a wide shot while having his full face fade in to the side of him was so cheesy, so cringy and yet so good. I couldn’t help but enjoy it.

The Next Right Thing:

Now again, I didn’t particularly enjoy this song but I did enjoy and appreciate the message behind it.

When Anna is at her lowest edge having lost Elsa, Olaf and potentially Kristoff...again she doesn’t really give him a second thought at this point, she remembers advice that both her mother gave her and that Sterling K. Brown’s character enforced and builds up the strength to get herself out of the cave.

It’s a song about reaching rock bottom and figuring out where to go from there, it’s something I can definitely relate to and I am sure others can to, whether or not that’s in school, college/university, work or personal lives.

Kristen Bell is a good singer but for some reason something didn’t click here for me.

When I Am Older:

I love Olaf and thought his song was a very nice and fun sidetrack to the movie, however in terms of it being memorable...”In Summer” was a lot better and had the funny beats of irony to it.

As I said when talking about his character, the song did help define Olaf’s story through the movie of being young and immature.

Also the funny beats to this song of ending it in complete denial of “This is fine” before being crushed by a boulder were great.

Some Things Never Change:

This was possibly the most cringe-worthy few minutes of the entire movie. This happens right near the start originally between Anna and Olaf before become an ensemble piece.

Again, I understand the message behind the song of how people don’t like change but it just came out of nowhere and had no real tie-in to the rest of the movie other than Anna’s unrealised story arc of wanting things to remain how they are.

All Is Found:

As a lullaby this was an okay song, however I don’t think it did much to progress the story despite being the start of the movie. “Frozen Heart” had more of a beginning quality to it rather than this.

Overall I rate the movie a 9.5/10, it’s a near perfect movie but there is still room for improvement as always. I loved the characters, the songs, the animation. It all just felt very Disney.

I saw Onward last week with my friend who is an avid LARPer and fellow lover of all things fantasy, so it was a perfect movie for the two of us. in general I adored it! I’ll probably see it again if i have the time and of course, i’m getting it on BluRay. i would also LOVE to snag the art book since the character design for this film was probably my favorite part.

my biggest complaint (and its not a complaint, just a negative i guess) is that Onward didnt feel like a Pixar movie to me, both in the story and animation. the animation style wasnt as interesting as some of the Pixar movies in the past (though thats been kinda up or down for a while), and it didnt feel as fresh or mind-blowing. to me it fit in better with the regular Disney animated features, not Pixar. Especially in comparison to Toy Story 4, albeit theyre very different styles, something about it didn’t pop for me like most Pixar movies do. The story was a little bland with Pixar in mind, though i did love it! i just always think of Pixar as the studio that gives stories and feelings to things we usually don’t expect. And Onward i guess was so similar to real life that it didn’t feel that way. Maybe if they had pushed the fantasy-realism even more, or changed some modern things to fit with these creatures more (they did do this but i think they didn’t push it far enough), that would have sold me.

and i’m not gonna talk about it at length, but the whole “Disney making a big deal about their ‘first’ LGBT character and acting so high and mighty about it” did dull the magic for me. considering the police officer was in two scenes, plus she didn’t have ANY characterization beyond being a cop and having a gf with a kid, it really did not live up to Disney’s hype. i’m not saying she wasn’t “gay enough” or whatever, but had they not brought it up beforehand or made any “hype” about her, i would have liked her a lot more. To compare this to Paranorman (not everyone agrees its good rep) Mitch being gay wasn’t something for LAIKA to brag about. Had Disney followed suit, their “first” gay character wouldn’t have become a meme.

Okay, so for the good stuff, I am a huge sucker for sibling bonding and especially HEALING in fiction. it gets to me more between sisters, but still. Ian and Barley like each other and get along well, but they still have their problems and doubts. The fact that they grew into their own and with each other is beautiful, especially the fact that Ian now sees Barley as a father figure AND a brother. That is an element i haven’t seen before, let alone done this well. I also really appreciated the tension between them in that Ian thought Barley was a screw up, that he thought less than great about his actions and choices. This sort of thing isn’t explored in media enough, and I’d love to see more. I believe most people don’t consider that our siblings’ opinions do matter to us as much as our parents’.

Again, I LOVE the character designs in this film. Everyone looks unique and distinct while still having key traits for each species. I love these designs way more that those in Monsters U, which felt kinda cut-and-paste with the monsters. I loved how you could tell that even within the elves they were still different races (or at least coded) with hair, facial features, and skin tone, all the while still blue! They did this with other creatures too, like how Corey is black while also being a Manticore bcs of her hair texture (and of course the incredible voice of Octavia Spencer). And you know what diversity Disney added and made not a peep about? One of Ian’s school friends walks with crutches! I can’t say what his affliction is, but its wonderful to see some inclusion to disabled folks.

My favorite characters were Barley and Corey. Barley was just so incredibly well rounded, like he was perfectly imperfect. I could go on and on honestly. Corey on the other hand was just plain AWESOME! Her little personality crisis felt kind of rushed to me, but to me it fit as an allegory for the whole film; she is a magical and powerful creature who let herself become weighed down by modern society and lost her moxie. I also love that Corey and the boy’s mom, Laurel, became friends (but i wouldve died to see them as a couple). I really want to know more about Manticores in this universe, since she seemed like the only one, and also might be immortal?

What initially drew me to this movie was seeing a centaur character in the original trailer, as trivial as that sounds its true. I love centaurs so much, and they hold a special place in my life for many reasons. I was a bit dissapointed in that there was only two centaurs prominently shown in Onward; Colt and the gal playing DDR (which was adorable). In the trailer there was one more, but not in the film. I did really like Colt, and he’s growing on me more. But one thing that has not left my mind is why to the centaurs and satyrs not wear pants?! everyone else does!! its probably bcs Pixar wanted the audience to clearly read them as centaurs/satyrs so pants would cover their cool legs, but still.... Do they just have a different level of decency than others? I have to know. But I love that the centaurs have horse ears instead of human ones <3

Lastly, and this isn’t good or bad, but I just didn’t resonate with Ian and Barley bringing back their dad. I mean, it was very emotional and a great drive to the story, but since I still have my parents I guess I just couldn’t connect to it. I liked how they were able to characterize the boy’s dad with just legs, that was adorable and a huge feat for animation!

Some little things I want to mention: the final boss dragon was SO COOL, it reminded me of the giant Ralph at the end of Ralph Breaks the Internet how it was made out of pieces, Ian was accurately scared to drive for the first time and i FELT THAT, Barley went the entire movie with a broken arm/wrist and took every swing like a champ! that boy is so chaotic i love him. ALSO it was so cool how Ian and Barley had each bits and pieces of their parents looks! like Ian had his dad’s face and body but his mom’s eyes, etc. Love that choice family design

All in all, a dazzling and wonderful movie with great characters and a cool story/theme, just not what I would expect from Pixar.

let’s start at the beginning. where the hell is the penumbra??? it sounds like the hotel, but it’s not very long, the music is slightly different, and there’s rain. i’m subscribing to the boat theory, personally

peter perspective

only one juno monologue (which we find out is not actually a monologue) makes me kind of sad. especially after my series relisten, hearing so much juno and especially so much juno growth.... i really love him and i miss hearing his thoughts. however, hearing peter? SO good. i suspect we’ll be sticking with peter throughout the season (though i’m not really sure) because, and especially in season 2, the heavy focus was on juno’s growth through juno’s perspective. the writers kept peter away until this was complete because he needed to confront trauma and learn to be good to his loved ones (see: his relationship with rita) before introducing that knot of distrust and betrayal. now, peter’s arc is going to be his trust issues, so surrounding him with one major source of said issues and with five other new people he is expected to rely on (which is why i expect the heavy emphasis was put on buddy’s buddy system). i think peter may even be more of a main character, however, i like the idea posited by several people that it’ll be rotating perspectives and it could go either way.

peter is obviously a super unreliable narrator. just as one example, he starts by saying he doesn’t bear juno ill will and then continues, throughout the episode, to display his total bitterness and hurt through callous #burns. another interesting thing about the peter primary perspective is his references to mag (and his emulation of mag’s voice), whom we’ve only seen through JUNO’S eyes. everything we know about mag and peter is basically secondhand. it’s deeply jarring as we delve into peter’s perspective to see many, many new layers to him that were unexpected and far different from the man we saw in season one.

also, is it just me, or is noah’s voice way deeper this time?????

juno and jupeter:

i MISSED juno. i know that i listened to the opening of the episode in the trailer, but hearing it for REAL made me tear up hardcore, especially as it was followed by the peter slap in the face.

juno. my favorite. i love him for choking on his coffee three (3) times. so much. i love his insistence on his conditions being upheld. i love him for wearing a dress and six inch heels and F L I R T I N G with probably one of the best minor characters ever. i love him for genuinely being super competent but like... not as a thief lmao, but like--he did do what peter told him to do, sorry peter u asked for this bud & also his voice breaking and getting incredibly indignant--sorry, “livid” per peter’s word--when juno is flirting with nova was..... perfect. absolutely perfect. thank you kabert for literally making my entire year

i was hoping for some sort of coldly professional, distant peter. now i am SO on board with this complete role reversal from train from nowhere--juno’s total mistrust in peter and reluctance to follow him or do anything he’s asked has been flipped on it’s head. “in our line of work, trust is not optional” comes to mind. now peter refuses to trust him. what i love even more is the thing that remained constant--the occasional moments of truce when they really ARE working together. peter giving juno a gun to shoot bad guys from the ruby 7 and the repoire they had there--”well DONE detective!” “yeah, it wasn’t half bad, was it? i don’t think engstrom’s goons liked it though!”--and this time things like juno describing nova’s disappearance and nureyev’s reluctant concession to it being spot on, or their agreement over how good nova’s new haircut looks. the bickering though--”and ohhh, but it shows” yes peter i totally believe that you bear juno no ill will--“because we’re both clearly distracted” “well maybe we wouldn’t be if one of us wasn’t so distract-ING” peter, you are the very picture of forgiveness

interesting dynamics i am EXTREMELY excited to see: juno and vespa, MORE juno and rita (now with updated Healthiness!) buddy and juno (because i loved their different brands of quick wit matched together) actually seeing more buddy, juno, and jet, jet and rita (fuck yeah), rita and PETER, peter and jet..... yeah. yeah. so excited. 

hoping to see more buddy/vespa development and relationship honestly, and so happy to see buddy again because i adore her. buddy’s insistence on Crime Family versus peter’s violent desire to work Alone Alone Alone will be so much fun as it comes to head.

that’s all i got folks. i’ve listened to this episode four times and haven’t stopped thinking about it since over twelve hours ago.

American Son (Netflix) - Movie Review

I’ll admit I was sucked in by Kerry Washington and the intriguing interactions her character, Kendra, was having with both the police officer and her “husband” in the trailer. My thinking was they didn’t want to give too much away in the trailer and if I watched the film itself would give more in the final product.

Boy was I wrong!

Now, the acting wasn’t bad and, as much as I can determine, the purpose of the movie was to ignite a conversation centered around police brutality and black men in America. Conversations that definitely need to occur in the homes of black families, especially those with black boys, but this after tragedy strikes representation of cops killing black men isn’t the best representation of how to effectively have this conversation with your kids… because now it’s too late.

Let me back up real quick… Here’s your spoiler warning. If you haven’t seen this yet and you still want to watch it without being told the story before hand… you should still read this and save yourself a hour and half of endless dialogue in one horribly lit location for the entire movie.

American Son is supposed to be a movie about an 18-year old young black man, Jamal, that has gone missing and his mother, Kendra (Kerry Washington), is at the police precinct looking for aid and assistance in finding him. She finds herself in a never-ending and ridiculously unhelpful game of word tennis with a low-level officer, Paul Larkin (Jeremy Jordan - Supergirl), who is clearly uninterested in helping this black woman find her son and has pegged him as a gang banger simply off the fact that his mother is black. He stands behind his inability to share any information with her until the AM Lieutenant arrives to provide any information available to the family.

Kendra waits for her husband, whom she is separated from, to arrive . Upon his introduction into the scene Kendra has gone to the restroom and Officer Larkin immediately assumes he is the Lieutenant he’s been awaiting because he’s a white man. OOPS… actually this white man is married to the black woman you were just talking shit about and called ghetto. Talk about messy…

Honestly, I was more irritated with the situation because he didn’t even wait for confirmation of who this man was before he started mouthing off about Kendra and the case that he clearly had information on but wasn’t “authorized” to share without supervision. If you’re really about the rules and upholding justice for everyone, even black kids, you shouldn’t be so loose lipped because you assume a white man that walks in the room should automatically be granted access to information you possess for no other reason than because he is a white man and has on a badge.

Well, if you’re waiting on something more to come out of this movie… THAT’S IT! We watch Kendra argue with her husband about why they’re not together and about why Jamal is going through an identity crisis as a mixed black boy with a white father that has left him high and dry and honestly never would have been able to teach him how to live as a black man anyway. We also watch her go back and forth with Officer Larkin when she realizes he' gave information to the husband that he wouldn’t give to her. The lieutenant eventually shows up, has the husband arrested because he doesn’t seem to want to respect his authority, and eventually tells them that their son was incidentally shot in the head and died on impact when the officer was actually aiming at one of his friends that was running away trying to evade arrest.

BOOM!

So all of this dialogue they were hoping would give them the opportunity to address their son’s behavior is null and void now because he’s not coming home.

An hour and 30 minutes…. in a room with windows and couches, that we’re told is a police station, but we can’t really verify that… we never even see Jamal’s face… watching this interracial marital couple go at each other about their downfall as parents and the terrors of raising a black boy in America today… and then experience the devastation of hearing their son was killed hours before because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.

Don’t get me wrong definitely a sad story, but personally I think it was a horrible depiction of the reality we as black people live everyday. A plausible conversation starter, however. My friend just kept repeating “that wasn’t a movie” after it ended, LOL. Honestly, as the “movie” progressed that’s what he kept repeating while checking how much time was left and wondering if we were ever going to see what Jamal looked like.

This was more of a play in my eyes with the stagnant set and heavy dialogue. My suggestions of better movie depictions on this battle that black men fight everyday and have fought everyday for centuries include “The Hate U Give” and “Fruitvale Station”.

Overall, I don’t really suggest wasting your time watching this movie… but think about how you can address these pressing issues with your black children to make sure they know how to make it back home to your family at night. Knowing your rights is fine, but also know difference of when they need to fight for those rights and when they need to make it to the next day to be alive to fight for those rights.
