The Stardust Spider Is A Fursona? (And Other Thoughts On "Monsters" in ST)
Being me, I was doodling the Mindflayer during a meeting. And something hit me.
Henry, in TFS, asserts that his superhero-sona is "The Stardust Spider". As I talked about before, that's a direct reference to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Queer aliens, trying to stop the apocalypse, you all know the drill.
But even more blatant than all that...What's spider-shaped and made of intergalactic dust?
Tumblr media
So now I have another question.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, Henry...You weren't drawing the Star-Dust Spider, were you?
And when TFS Henry talks about the Stardust Spider...he's not referring to the Mindflayer, is he?
And with all this in mind...
Tumblr media
If we consider the Star-Dust Spider (read: the Shadow) being the sidekick, then what the fuck, pray tell, is Vecna???? Vecna being literal mystery meat...a) because we don't know his true identity and b) because he's made up of multiple kids of flesh: human and creature/tentacle
All this talk of superhero-sonas takes me to something (tangentially related) that's been rattling in my head since it was posted:
Tumblr media
And until now I wasn't sure why it was so stuck in my head. But now I know.
It's an Iron Man reference.
Tumblr media
"A monsters wasn't built overnight" vs "Heroes aren't born. They're built"
Monsters = Heroes. Villains ≠ Monsters.
That logic fits weirdly well with:
"I'm the monster." "No, you saved me!"
"He's the monster, Henry. Not you." "Papa hurt me, but he was no monster. He was an ordinary, mediocre man."
(There's also supposedly a line in the VR game where a scientist thinks "Brenner's little pet. What a monster." about Henry, but I have yet to hear that for myself.)
This all implies that a) the monsters are the heroes and b) the villains are just ordinary people, which...has some interesting implications when it comes to script details.
Tumblr media
"-- but also for himself" Right. Okay.
And so if monster = hero/villain = mediocre man...
Tumblr media
I just. Hm. Takes me way way back to my posts about the version of One who looks weirdly like Brenner...who also happens to be the One who flash-cuts to Vecna.
Anyway...much to think about. Many such cases.

Why Scripts Aren’t Objective Truth (And What Are Scripts Supposed To Do/What's The Purpose Of A Script?)
So, while the ST scripts are absolutely valuable tools for analysis, and I am not, by any means, saying we should discard them entirely (I use them in lots of my analysis), it does floor me how many people (including film students which floors me even more) believe that scripts are meant to tell you objective truths about the show’s plot.
Like. The whole point of scripts is to communicate what you want the audience to believe/the impression you want them to get- scripts are a plan/roadmap for movie and TV production.
So, if you want the audience to fully believe that a character did something (even if they didn’t), you’re going to write your script as if they did it. If you want the audience to fully believe that an actually-completely-innocent man murdered an animal in a fit of sadistic curiosity, you’re going to write your script as if he reveled in the act and did all of it on purpose. Again, even if he is completely innocent, because you want your viewer to 100% believe that he is guilty (and this changes if you only want them to partially believe he’s guilty/have doubts about his guilt etc etc).
The purpose of a script is to provide a roadmap to the production team (including actors) so that they can give a specific impression to the audience.
The purpose of a script is not to give an objective, 100% true, objective viewpoint of what actually happened/the full objective context of every scene. Scripts are MEANT to give a “biased”portrayal of events/give a specific impression, because what we’re seeing on screen is also a biased portrayal of events.
The script isnt meant to tell you the objective truth of what’s going on- it’s meant to tell ST production the impression that they need to give/what they need to convey.
Like, let’s talk about that infamous Massacre at Hawkins Lab script snippet re: Henry and the rabbit.
Tumblr media
So, I talked here and here about why I don’t think Henry killed that rabbit, but how on earth can I possibly believe that Henry didn’t kill or intentionally torture that rabbit when it’s written right there, in the script, that he was torturing it and was fascinated by its suffering?
Well, it’s partially because I know that the ST writers want the audience, on a surface level, to fully believe that Henry is guilty. They want the audience to believe that Henry was torturing that rabbit for his own fascination, and that he killed it. I know that scripts work as a roadmap for production & for what the writers want the audience to believe on the surface.
And it’s also because I also know that when we look at the show itself, not just the script and the other pieces of evidence that are present in the show, such as:-
A.) The fact that not only do we not see the rabbit die onscreen, but its body is also shown in two different places (it’s shown in front of the house in the Creel Family Trailer, and is shown over at the slide in the Dear Billy episode), and NEITHER of those places are where Henry supposedly killed it, as he supposedly killed it around the side of the house.
B.) Henry’s facial expression, as James has talked about, looks far more upset than fascinated. Raphael Luce has also talked about working with the Duffers and being very specific about his facial expressions because Young Henry has no speaking lines, so expressions are something extra important to pay attention to for Young Henry.
C.) The fact that the rabbit’s foot was caught in the snare and that the shots of the rabbit parallel Hopper breaking his own foot to escape his chains in Russia- Henry was likely breaking the rabbit’s foot to free it.
D.) The fact that the rabbit’s dead body HAS A BROKEN LEG, the EXACT leg that was caught in the snare.
D.) The fact that Victor was trying to hunt a wildcat- and snaring live rabbits is an EXTREMELY common way to lure wildcats to kill them.
E.) This piece of evidence isn’t present in the show, but I’m including it because it’s non-script evidence- the stray cats mentioned in the leaked TFS auditions, and how they’re likely what killed the rabbit after Henry broke its leg to free it.
-we can see that it’s extremely unlikely that Henry was actually torturing and killing that rabbit out of fascination/torturing and killing it at all.
These pieces of evidence aren’t things that are present in the script- but they are present in the show. Which is why it’s so important not to rely on the script as being some sort of objective truth/why it’s important not to just solely rely on the script, because the script is not the final product, and instead, it’s main focus is to serve as a roadmap for the main impression that the writers want the audience to have (and on the surface, they want the audience to believe that Henry did it, so that they can later reveal that he did not.)
So, to summarize, I’m able to easily believe that Henry didn’t kill or revel in the torture of that rabbit, despite what the script says, because I a.) know that the script acts as roadmap for what the writers want the audience to believe on a surface level, b.) I know that there’s extra scenes/details/evidence in the show itself that “contradict” the script/that contradict that surface level impression/that demonstrate that Henry was trying to help the rabbit and c.) I know that Stranger Things puts a heavy focus on looking at what you’re being shown instead of just blindly listening to what you’re being told.
The idea of the script serving as a roadmap for the surface level/main impression they want to give the audience (rather than laying out the objective truth about the plot) is also demonstrated with how they presented Henward as “The Friendly Orderly” in that very same Massacre at Hawkins Lab script. If the script was meant to be an objective truth, they would have called him One or Henry or Edward. But they don’t. Because it’s not time for that reveal yet & they want to give the impression that he’s just The Friendly Orderly.
Tumblr media
Quit wanting to be told everything and start looking at what you’re being shown. The script is not the final product/main piece of media that’s being analyzed here- the show is. And the show itself is NOT going to tell you everything either.
Hell, Dustin said it himself:
Tumblr media
So many people watching and analyzing ST want to be TOLD everything so badly- and yet, even when they're told that the show won't tell them everything, and that they need to look at what they're being shown and look behind the curtain, they still don't listen and end up relying on things like the scripts to tell them a supposed objective truth.
This isn't me mocking people for not noticing things/not always seeing everything- I miss stuff all the time. This is me being slightly frustrated that people continue to rely on the scripts as some sort of objective gospel & think that "well, the script said that Henry was fascinated and torturing the rabbit," is an effective rebuttal to my analysis of the rabbit scene, and frustration with people thinking that what we're told in the script somehow supersedes what we're being shown in the show.

official stranger things scripts publishing this fall!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
have folks talked about this??? probably yes but idk if it's been officially announced? it's starting to populate on retail sites including penguin random house and edelweiss (which is for librarians/booksellers/book professionals) etc
(PRH link) (edelweiss link)
Season 1 - Sept. 2, 2025 Season 2 - Sept. 2, 2025 Season 3 - Oct. 7, 2025 Season 4 - Nov. 4, 2025
the release dates set it up to perfectly hype up (and capitalize on) season 5's release in nov/dec. granted, it being unofficial for now means those on-sale dates could change.
the other obvious note is that i'm sure these versions have been edited and scrubbed for anything spoilery or any juicy crumbs, lol. still cool to have the official scripts for every episode, though.
disclaimer bc of my involvement in the dustin experiment: i'm not involved in this at all, have no insider knowledge, am speculating and commenting as a fan etc etc.

The Emperor knows
(This story is interchangeable, but I'm using the female Primarchs from the Femmarch au)
*The Scene: The Emperor has called his daughters to an impromptu private council. None of the sisters know why, but it's pretty clear how serious this is*
Emps: Listen, im going to make this clear and concise. *he narrows his eyes and scans over his daughters* I know.
Horus: Know what, father?
Emps: Don't Bullshit me! I KNOW...
*All the sisters begin looking around awkwardly at each other or shamefully away from each other*
Emps: It was brought to my attention, and while truthfully, I couldn't care less what escapades each of you get up to in your own time. If these activities were to come to light, it would set the wrong example for our Imperium. So, if all of your "relations" are to continue, ensure they are kept quiet.
Fulgrim: *evil smile* That means you two. *she points to Guilliman and Angron*
Angron :What do you mean, us!?!
*Angron raging and nearly leaps across the table at her sadistic sister. Guilliman holds her back*
Fulgrim:*laughs* Oh, come on! Last night, I swear all of Terra could hear you two from orbit.
* Both Guilliman and Angron sit back, blushing ashamed*
Khan: You're one to speak Phoenician. You and Ferrus are practically inside one another any chance you get.
Fulgrim: Ahh, just like you and dear Magnus when you lock yourselves in the library for "Special Research"
Sanguinius: Alright, I think we've all had our fun. Now--
Fulgrim: I don't wanna hear any lectures from you! We all know who actually holds Horus' leash.
*Sanguinius sits back down flustered. Horus leans over, trying to comfort her*
Emps: Alright, Enough! As I said, I was made aware of all your escapades. This means I DO NOT want to HEAR NOR SEE anything outside of your private chambers. Do I make myself clear?
*All the primarchs nod in acknowledgement, except Mortarion*
Mortarion: *confused* Wait. You're all fucking?
---*End scene*---
(This is basically my scripting process when I make comics)

Why is no one talking about how monumental it is that Will's feelings for Mike were confirmed by the released S2 script for the Snowball? Like, beyond that script recontextualizing the whole of S2's Byler moments as undeniably romantically coded, I think it illustrates that the Duffer brothers were never unaware of how amibigiously Mike and Will's relationship presented. One of my biggest sources of Byler doubt has been that the (presumably) heterosexual, white Duffer brothers happened their way into gay subtext between Mike and Will while trying to craft an (overplayed, tired, predictable) unrequited, in-love-with-his-best-friend queer narrative for Will, but this has completely changed my mind. Because why would they put so much effort in showing how reciprocal Mike and Will's intense and intimate friendship was in S2 when they were already setting up Will's romantic feelings? Either they are really empathetic and sensitive to the complexity of queer feelings or they just wanted Will to suffer more by including so much ambiguity to Mike's actions, which I'm hoping is not the case. And furthermore, I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say that they were always planning for Byler, given that Will's queerness and Mike's insecurities + desire to perform "normalcy" by kissing a girl are evident from the original pitch. They were originally going to kill off Eleven which, in the context of S2 Mike and Will + Will's burgeoning romantic feelings, increases the likelihood of endgame Byler dramatically. Idk y'all, I'm freaking out because there's absolutely no way the Duffers could even pretend to be oblivious to the romantic subtext of Mike and Will's friendship when they were planning it since Season 2. They are so endgame y'all ahhh!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, the fact that even in the pitch Will is related to Mike (through DnD) makes me actually sick, like that's actually insane...

I've just watched Khan!!! The Musical! online and I need to put some sort of post out here for more people to hear about this because it's so much fun?? In case you haven't heard about it yet, it's a parody of Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan and here are some things I'd like to point out about it: (!some spoilers!)
-Data has created this musical from a Watsonian perspective
-Data narrates the thing and takes on some of the smaller roles himself
-Kirk's voice is perfect
-it has made me laugh out loud multiple times
-I need the tap dancing meditation with Spock and Kirk on Spotify why isn't that one of the things on the selections😮‍💨
-oh yeah, there are exactly 30 minutes of selected songs from this musical on Spotify
-my favorite out of those is probably The Hyperchannel Rag, it's so much fun to listen to🦫
-Kirk reminiscing in his past days and the crew picking him back up and on track

The Psalter of St Columba is a 6th century manuscript thought to be the first book written in Ireland.
The story goes that the manuscript was secretly copied by St Columba (Colum Cille) from a book he was lent, and St Finnian of Movilla, the lender of the original, claimed the copy should be returned to him as well. The Irish King Diamait judged that Finnian was in the right, which has been cited as the first instance of copyright law. The decision was so controversial it sparked a battle, and Columba was exiled to the island of Iona.
While the story may be apocryphal, the book became a holy relic in the keeping of Clan O'Donnell, who in the 11th century constructed an elaborate silver cumdach (book reliquary) to house it, and a tradition arose of carrying it three times around the O'Donnell warriors before a battle, gaining it the name "Cathach" or "Battler". It remained the property of the O'Donnells until 1843, when Sir Richard O'Donel entrusted it to the Royal Irish Academy.
