there was just something so genuine about kirk realising they’d need money in the 21st century, spotting a chess table and .. just .. sitting down and playing random strangers for a few spare notes at a time. no competitivity, no real sense of urgency, no hard feelings, he just spends the whole afternoon betting strangers he can win and winning every time because of course he can. ‘one dimensional’ chess is a cake walk compared to the chess he’s used to.

and no one leaves that table feeling like they’ve really lost out. it was a good game, kirk wins fair and square, they enjoy their time with him, he even gains a crowd as people get invested in the matches. he shakes their hands and they move on. it was such an endearing way of showing us the kind of person kirk is. charming, easily personable. he finds a fair way to get by in a completely alien situation that still matches his skillset.

I don’t know, it was such a short scene but it showed us so much without any dialogue. They could have shown la’an and kirk figuring out how to grab some quick cash in a bunch of different ways, but they chose one with a lot of heart and that’s why I really love this show.

unironically and genuinely one of my favourite things about Miles and Keiko's relationship is that they have an active sex life and how the writing treats it very casually. they flirt and proposition each other and actively look forward to sleeping together. its very much implied that they do sexy role-play. they're just so completely attracted to each other. Keiko loves Miles with his shirt off. Miles loves Keiko in a fitting dress. it is so so important to me that they find each other sexy

Meta: SNW's Chapel doesn't fix her character in TOS, it makes it worse.

I see people blaming any and all criticism of the writing and development for Christine Chapel on misogyny. But if anything, I feel like a full defense of her characterization is worse.

If SNW's interpretation is truly who Christine is, TOS tells us her wings are clipped. She becomes desperate, pines for years for a man who no longer returns her affections, loses her self-confidence and power. Retconning Nurse Chapel into this fiery, war-time, fighting badass with flirtatious energy and commitment issues makes her look utterly regressed in TOS, a mere shell of her former self that never returns.

She is nervous, quiet, keeps to herself, no longer fights, doesn't go after what she wants. Confined to sickbay, forever lonely. Is her development on SNW supposed to be some kind of win? Because to me it looks like they changed who she is into someone she's not, and damaged her more in the process, underscoring all the mistakes TOS made with her rather than railing against them. They could have given us Christine Chapel who was quietly competent, intelligent, kind, gentle, all the traits she still had in TOS but with real development, but they just had to make her into someone whose personality seems utterly destroyed by TOS. I find no enjoyment in that. I'm not going to celebrate that when they could have given us a new, original character to be that badass fighter.

Do you think Julian introduces Garak to a few classical Earth musicals and Garak is taken aback at how similar Human and Cardassian high schools are?

Like, the betrayals? The in-fighting? The manipulation? The psychological torture? The public shaming? The Obsidian Order could have used a few of these teenage Human girls when conducting interrogations.

No wonder the Captain's son is so fearful of trying to date Human women, the choosing of mates is clearly a lethal activity.

how does antiquing work in Star Trek?

like, okay, there's no scarcity Because Replicators. great! except you can't replicate an antique, not the real thing. probably some AMAZING reproductions- 24th-century historical costumers must be having the time of their lives, because as great as modern synthetic baleen is, imagine what you could do with a machine that literally replicates the exact molecular structure of the same! or that extinct flax that made medieval linen so great! -but I know antique collectors. there's nothing like the feeling of something you know so many other people have loved for centuries

is it like a barter system? do you go to the antique "shop" with things passed down in your family or found in the equivalent of a Facebook buy-nothing group, and trade what you have for what the history nerd running the place has based on your respective interests?

is Brimfield like a giant swap meet? could I go with, say...a big bag full of my grandmother's chunky 1950s costume jewelry and trade it for 1880s blouse waists because the stall owner wants the former and I want the latter? equivalent value wouldn't matter- what's value, beyond how much you treasure something? nobody's got rent to make or bills to pay, after all

do people become antiques "dealers" just for the thrill of the hunt and the pleasure of matching an object to someone who will love it? you don't have to work, after all; you can spend your whole life searching the world for rare treasures if that brings you joy

Julian laughs and crouches next to him. “I suppose you do. Seriously, though, what’s going on?”

what gets me about far beyond the stars is that unlike other sci-fi or supernatural shows that have a “maybe it’s all a dream” episode, this episode ends with hope that even if the entirety of star trek is just benny’s imagination, just his dream, what a good dream it is

Once again thinking about Human who was adopted by a Vulcan/Romulan couple, my current thoughts about it:

The Vulcan parent: Seems controlling and strict to outsiders, has everything of the Human’s life planned out, wanted them to have an arranged marriage even tho Humans don’t go through pon farr

Meanwhile, in reality, that’s their solution to handling the Human’s anxiety (cause y’all just know this is another traumatized oc), the idea is that if they plan everything out for them in advance then there’s nothing for them to be anxious about, and if they arrange a marriage then they know that their kid isn’t gonna end up with a creep (found dramas and stuff while researching Human culture for their child)

The Romulan parent: Seems more laidback to outsiders, was against an arranged marriage and any other life planning for their Human kid, comes across like they just really support choosing your own destiny, but that’s actually their theory on handling the Human’s anxiety, they think if the Human keeps getting pushed to do more and more stuff, then they’ll “see there’s nothing to be anxious about��� and it’ll help them long term, wants their kid to be able to handle themself in case anything happens to their parents

The Human: A young adult by now who gives off no indication on having been raised by a Vulcan and a Romulan if you aren’t paying close attention, more anxious than the average person, benefits from both parents’ interference (some stuff is good to avoid and some stuff does get better if you go out and do it)

I think it says a lot about the sad state of Hollywood that none of the live action nutrek series have had the balls to set their stories after Voyager, and I think it's because they're too big of fucking cowards to address the issues of the rights and autonomy behind artificial intelligence set in motion in both Voyager and TNG.

Like I get it there's a bunch of interesting stuff that happened between present day and TOS but FUCK THAT SHIT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER VOYAGER!?!?!?!?!?!?

B'Elanna, Neelix, Tuvok and Chakotay needed to star in an episode where they just talked about their different beliefs and approaches to spirituality/religion. Paired off and all together. I need to gain more insight. I need characterization and I need it to be messy.

Voyager character dnd classes

Janeway: paladin. literally no question she literally made an oath to get her crew home, she is a prototypical paladin. i started this series of posts because i realized how much of a paladin Janeway is.

Chakotay: paladin. i struggled a bit with Chakotay but he is obviously someone very dedicated to truth and justice and was willing to go off on his own path to fulfill that dream of justice when he joined the Maquis and that's very paladin of him.

Tuvok: monk. i think a lot of Vulcans have big monk energy due to their intense almost monastical studies and devotion to logic and Tuvok is a prime example who is highly trained in both physical and mental discipline and sought to help others (Kes, Suder) exercise that same discipline.

Torres: sorcerer. Torres very much lacks the formal training that a usual Starfleet engineer (or wizard) would have but (in my opinion) has even more natural talent for ambitious engineering and manages to be a miracle worker not through some pact or intelligence but just through sheer force of will.

Kim: wizard. look in the show, Torres and Kim were kind of presented as opposites (the Maquis vs Starfleet) with the personality differences to match despite having a vaguely similar set of skills and capabilities. so it really makes sense that if Torres is a sorcerer, Kim would be a wizard with all the traditional by the book learning that entails.

Paris: fighter. Tom Paris is a fighter and i don't have much of an argument other than ~vibes~ and the fact that only a fighter would think he could tank the damage from going warp 10 and then start turning into a salamander.

EMH: cleric/bard multiclass. look the EMH was literally designed to be a doctor. when he was first activated that was his entire purpose and nothing else so i don't think i can really argue that he isn't a cleric. but as he started to exist for longer, he consistently wanted to be something more (specifically a singer, see Virtuoso). i need to emphasize. he's not a good bard. he doesn't provide inspiration or support to anyone. but the fact is that he needs to prove he can be something more.

Neelix: bard. do i have to explain myself? Neelix is very much a jack of all trades master of none kind of character. he dabbles in pretty much everything and 90% of his scenes exist to give support and encouragement to other characters.

Seven: warlock. even in-universe, the Borg (when they're at they're best) are portrayed as this eerie eldritch entity so i think it would make sense that in dnd mechanics, even though Seven broke away from the Borg, she maintained that pact with them in order to keep performing sorts of magical acts (like her increased strength and like. bringing people back from the dead). but she also very much has that same darkness and melancholy that a warlock has from a pact with an ambiguously evil being.

Kes: druid. no question about this one. she has an affinity for plants and vague but powerful supernatural abilities drawn from the literal energy of the universe.
