Common Starfish (Asterias rubens)   The common starfish can be found across our shores here in the UK, found mainly in rock pools and at depths of 600m out at sea. Starfish are active predators, feasting on bivalves like mussels and clams. They feed on shellfish by pulling their shells open with their arms and then inserting their own stomach into the shell and dissolve their prey with digestive juices, before they reabsorb their stomach full of food.    Fact: They do not have a nose and use special receptors in their skin!   The Common Starfish is a type of marine animal called an echinoderm, meaning ‘spiny skined’. Echinoderms include starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and brittlestars. They are easily Identifiable due to their five limbs, orange in colour and small pale spines.   Fact: Starfish can regenerate their limbs – You can often spot a starfish with 4 normal sized limbs and 1 small limb. The small limb is regrowing! They do this so they can escape a predator and then regrow the missing limb or limbs.
