I just saw a post that said that fictional characters cannot be abused- they absolutely can. These fictional characters are representations, and the trauma they face can more often than not, in some way or another, be replicated in real life.
On that note, I fully believe in shipping whatever you want to. Why? Because although fictional characters can undergo abuse, they are also not real. If you are shipping abuser x abused irl then yes, we need to have a talk, but in the fictional realm the world's your stage.
I genuinely do not get why people feel the need to police the media that other people consume- that's their own right. I definitely don't agree with certain ships and can't read fanfics of them but how the hell am I supposed to judge someone enjoying that? You know nothing about this person. For all you know, this could be the only light in their life- are you really going to shame someone for having this?
And besides, shipping something problematic is not the cause of problematic behaviour. It never will be. Perhaps it might be the result of it (i disagree, but for argument's sake), and if so, what effect will that ship have on them? It's only a symptom, attacking it will have no effect.
ALSO, how is this any different to the libraries in america banning books?
There's a difference between disliking something and attacking someone. For example, as someone into the grishaverse, I've noticed that a deeply polarising subject is darklina (I don't care about darklina or malina, so consider me a neutral party). Some people like it, some don't. I know people who have gone as far as to block that tag from their dash, which is totally! okay! Encouraged even. But the trouble comes when you attack another person for liking it.
Now that's for consuming, onto producing.
The ethics of fanfiction are wildly different than that of original fiction. Firstly because, as a fanfic author, you are writing for fun. You are not commercialising your craft, which also means you don't have that much of a responsibility towards what you are spreading- it's only going to reach a small percentage of people anyway. This is why published authors get bashed for toxic relationships but fanfic authors generally get a pass for it- because fanfic is primarily for indulgence. It is primarily written "for fun".
(By the way, I don't mean to trivialise fanfiction, i love fanfiction)
This is why if someone ships a problematic ship I will not care. But if this ship becomes/is canon, then I will criticise the author. It's not that deep.
There's a fine line between it's just fiction and let's critique the values and messages this piece of work espouses because it is harmful and fanfiction or any fanwork will lie safely in the territory of the former. Try criticising fanfiction and you will feel like a fool. Why? Because these authors of fanfiction are not making money off of their work. It's that simple.

Thinking about this:

So what I love about this is how completely accurate it is to describe your kink orientation as a "need". Because it's not just something I would like out of a relationship. It's not a want. It's a need. I'm actively unhappy in vanilla relationships(or that one time I spent a year trying to be in a relationship with another sub *shudder*). I need to be able to submit to my partner. And honestly I just need to be able to submit in general. Not having that feels like I'm suffocating. So Louis saying that he and Armand had figured out what they NEEDED from each other, not wanted, but needed, is perfectly accurate.
Also look at the love in their eyes!!!! You'll NEVER convince me that they weren't in love in Dubai.

i think fandom spaces would become much more enjoyable across the board if people stopped flipping their pancakes over other fans enjoying characters that they don't like. or, god forbid, like them but in 'the wrong way.'

Watching people yell on their metaphorical rooftop about how much they think "wholesome ships" are boring is the fandom equivalent of watching kids says they smoke because it makes them look cool.
( Just In case it could be misinterpreted:I'm all for variety in fiction and depiction of both the wholesome and the problematic with everything in between,I just can't stand people insulting anyone else's taste gratuitously like an edgy kid. Enjoy what you enjoy, leave others out of it. )

Honestly, hating on Minthara for being "evil" is so hypocritical if you like Shadowheart or Astarion. As if Shadowheart wasn't also brainwashed into murdering and torturing people for years and Astarion is... Astarion. And she's not any more abrasive than Lae'zel. Like idc if you didn't save her or you killed her or whatever, it's in your own right to dislike a fictional character. But stay out of conversations about her if all you have to add is something shitty and you refuse to get to know her story and point of view.

this is a general dragon age fandom problem but i can't stand ppl who wanna morally justify their hate of a character so bad they'll at best grossly exaggerate anything they've ever done and at worst just make shit up, in an effort to paint any fan of said character as a morally repugnant person who lacks the high level of thinking needed to realise how bad that character is and rightfully hate them as that is their correct and moral stance actually. like lmao wow congratulations ur gonna get a good grade in fandom and you're the most moral intellectual untouchable person in the fandom nobody comes close to you. and Oprah is on the phone right now because she wants to give you 1 million dollars because you're so good and pure and smart

the worst thing about people ignoring the Glitter scene in Koujaku's route is when they inevitably shit on Mink's for the same crap people (rightfully) point out the hypocrisy your feed will be nothing but people talking about the Kouao near-rape scene in the least nuanced way possible

The reaction to this bland as hell interview from the anti-Maxiel peeps is wild.
I think Daniel mentioned Lando because he and the journalist were talking about him before the interview started. But only because Lando has just won his first GP. That’s it.
Daniel either did mention Max and it was edited out (possibly for length), or he didn’t think he had to state the obvious and mention Max like he has in every other interview he’s given since 2016.
yessss anon omg that interview is blandddd as hell lmaooo. i think the only reason why we’re even talking about it is the fact that daniel said lando, when anyone who has eyes can tell how that relationship went down 😭 and he didn’t even say that lando’s his bestie or anything he said ‘let’s say… mates’ like 😭? such a random ass PR answer to a random ass PR question.
we have no way to know exactly when this interview happened so i wouldn’t speculate but you are right, he has been mentioning max for almost a decade in basically everything. and now just because of this one they are suddenly ✨PR✨ and ✨fanservice✨ and bs like that??? 😭 girlies pls where’s your logic
i also find it hilarious that the non maxiel community keeps harping on them, saying what they have is ✌️fan service✌️. fanservice? by whom? mr. max i-just-wanna-go-home-screw-media verstappen or mr. daniel internalized-homophobia-gay-chicken-loser ricciardo?? they just can’t control themselves next to each other and that’s how we’ve gotten them at all 😭😭😭

Me: I like these two characters’ interactions, they make cute friends, let’s look for art of them together!
The tags: “If you ship them you’re a [REDACTED] block me you sick weirdo” times twelve before finding any art
The spite:

GOD I love the scenes in which Louis dominates Armand. The rest of the time, Armand is in complete control of himself, and usually pretty fierce. Like me, he doesn't come across as submissive, except to Doms, who can see right through us. But when he's submitting to Louis, he's almost unrecognizable. Like here:
Tumblr media
The intense vulnerability on his face is deeply touching to me. I can feel how he's feeling in that moment. And it's the best feeling in the world. Even when he was clearly broken up about not wanting to come to watch Madeleine get turned, he was still placing himself in Louis' hands, giving Louis the power to force him to do something he desperately didn't want to do. Giving up that control, making ourselves vulnerable in that way, even if we do end up having to do something we don't want to do, is a beautiful experience for us. Just like being punished. When I say punished, to be clear, I'm not talking about what we in the kink scene call "funishment". I mean true punishment that we don't enjoy for disobedience. It soothes something deep inside of us, and actually usually calms us down. So even though Armand looked scared and vulnerable in that scene, on a fundamental level, it profoundly touched the submissiveness inside of him. It gave him an opportunity to submit to Louis. Which is incredibly important to us.
So yeah, I just adore watching Armand submit. It soothes my intense desire to submit as well to get to see him experiencing it.

time for what might actually be a controversial opinion in my corner of the mdzs fandom but, uh
i do actually think we should stay out of the canon jiang cheng tag 😬 like yes, it’s absurd to create a tag that includes the word “canon” in it for content that is largely just very bad faith fanon takes, but forget the pedantry of that for a second and just bear with me.
if i’m understanding the fandom history of this tag correctly, the canon jiang cheng crowd specifically started using it because fans of jc (rightfully!!) got on their case about constantly dropping their character hate and bad faith commentary in the general character tags
they have by and large been consistent about tagging their bizarre hateboner content with this tag. they are self-containing in an easily avoidable quarantine zone (which is more than the jgy antis ever bother to do)
aside from how people who like jiang cheng feel about a group of antis claiming that their tag is the “canon” one, realistically people who are looking for jc content are just going to type his name into the search bar and then explore the general tags first
i’m not a jc stan, but i do like him and categorically disagree with the cjc crowd’s assessment of his character. but like. i make a very big deal on this blog about not tagging character hate, or not tagging pointless character negativity that no one actually wants to see, or making use of known character-critical tags so that people can easily sort and filter what they’re looking for on this site without forcing other people who are just minding their business in the general tags to see stuff that is just shitty and mean-spirited. it would be extremely rich of me to say those things and then turn around and not say something, or even encourage, my followers to cross that line. even for people who have been cunty at me and my friends in the past.
like honestly just… let them have their little enclosure where they can say their wrong things to each other, and leave them alone. the adults can just keep talking in the general jiang cheng tags.

Many of you in this fandom overstep boundaries. When I talk about anti-blackness and misogynoir in the fandom in general and HoTD specifically, it is not your place as a white/non-Black person to tell me that “akshually, I don’t think it was anti-blackness. I think the writers were just lazy.”
That is an egregious overstep, and it annoys me very much. Black people in fandom can have conversations about the misogynoir and we can even disagree, but where the fuck do you, as a white/non-Black person, get off? You not only insert yourselves, but you question the experiences of Black people in fandom as if you have any authority or personal understanding.
I cannot give credence to the opinions of individuals who cannot even recognise the presence of anti-blackness in their shipping communities. There is nothing you can say that I am interested in hearing. Our conversations are not for you to intrude on, they are intra-communal and I am getting sick and tired of you lot inserting yourselves where you don’t belong.
