Eddie had people get cold feet about buying all the time so he just shrugged it off when Chrissy Cunningham wasn’t waiting for him after Hellfire and the basketball game. He drove home and went about his night. Nothing too unusual. The cash would have been nice, but also she had looked really rough, probably hadn’t need more things fucking with her system. 

The next morning Eddie headed out to Rick’s to pick up some more supplies. He hummed to himself as he strolled into the boathouse. Eddie had his system down by now, pick up some stuff, leave the cash, maybe relax by the water for a bit (it was relaxing, sue him). But just as he bent down to drag the tarp off of one of Rick's boat stashes, something tackled him.

He went flying backwards and slammed into a wall. A wall behind him and oh that was a wall of muscle in front of him.

Eddie blinked in surprise as he looked into the eyes of one Steve Harrington.

Eddie held his hands up and tried to look disarming, he knew how to handle folks on a bad trip. But instead Harrington just looked him up and down and stepped back with a ragged sigh.

"Please tell me you have a radio, Munson."

Eddie blinked, first he was slammed into a wall. Next he was just let go. And finally? Harrington knew who he was. Well, Eddie knew he didn't exactly have a low profile, but still. Having the former King of Hawkins High rough you up and then ask for a radio? A little confusing.

Eddie motioned over his shoulder and cleared his throat. "So I'm just going to, uh, go. You seem to be having a crisis and I'm good so..."

And Eddie was up against the wall again. Splendid. At least this time it was just a firm hand holding him in place instead of a tackle, but still. Not what he had been expecting when he left home this morning.

“Look, pal.” Eddie bit out, “If you are looking for drugs you got plenty to pick from here, you don’t need to push me around to get them. And no. I don’t have a radio.”

Steve deflated, head hitting the wall next to Eddie’s. And oh. This was causing all sorts of feelings that Eddie did not want to be having. He was so over his phase of crushing on pretty, straight boys. (He hoped.)

“Uhhh, hey… are you okay? Cause, full offense, but I really don’t want you all up on me. Jocks aren’t my thing, try to avoid them like the plague honestly.”

Harrington started to laugh, body shaking, hysterical laughter. That was probably not a good sign. He slowly pulled back, shoulders still shaking and Eddie watched as tears pooled in the corners of Harrington’s eyes. 

“Okay, I’m right there with you with avoiding jocks, these days at least. But I need to get a message to Dustin Henderson and I’m missing my radio, can you find him for me?”

Eddie raised his eyebrows in disbelief. “I’m not a fucking message boy, go yourself.”

Harrington winced. “Uh, I can’t. But! I can pay you, please.”

Eddie sighed, this really wasn’t what he was expecting when he woke up this morning. “Fine, what is it and where you think he is?” And! I get paid in advance.”

The door swung shut behind him, the bell still tinkling to announce his arrival. Eddie raised his eyebrows, sure enough there was Robin, Dustin, and the redhead, just like Steve had predicted there would be. All whispering furiously while pointing at the computer. 

Eddie cleared his throat, no response. 

"Henderson," he tried instead, a sing song note in his voice. 

Dustin looked up at that, hope sparking and fading in his eyes. "What." He said flatly.

Eddie sighed, he really should have charged Harrington double just to deal with Henderson’s attitude. "Friend of yours gave me a message for you, thought you might be interested in hearing it."

Dustin rolled his eyes, "We are sort of busy right now, it can wait." He turned back towards the computer.

Eddie shrugged, “Alright, but I’m not giving Harrington his money back so last chance-“

Dustin swung around, suddenly interested. He asked Eddie to tell him the message or something, his voice faded out of Eddie’s perception, he wasn’t listening. Instead he watched the TV screen with shock. His jaw dropped as he read the alert across the bottom of the screen “Body found, investigations ongoing.”

The news crew was outside Harrington’s house.

could have it where it's eddie there from the beginning of season one, maybe as jonathan's, not asshole, but careless stoner boyfriend who has to have the demogorgon as a wakeup call to how he's been behaving and that's how he meets the kids to eventually run D&D -then Steve, who still ends up in minimum wage hell, connects with Lucas at the public basketball courts and this shifts to being the chauffeur/babysitter by season four, so maybe he offers Chrissy a ride one day when she's freaked out and later, near his abandoned car, the police find her body

or i'm toying with a version like -steve 'the freak' harrington who's just a little too into queen and prince and david bowie, who doesn't take shit from people who don't like that he flirts with guys and gals, whose hair and wardrobe and intense mother-hen tendencies invite 'sissy' ridicule at best -and 'king eddie' munson who throws the best ragers bc no one cards people from the trailer park and he's got an in with reefer rick, who's in a band and even hawkins got swept up in the 80s rock craze, whose charisma and devil-may-care attitude and leather jacket made him cool rather than off putting

steddie reverse au where steve, instead of becoming a prep/jock to appease his parents, becomes a punk to rebel against them and basically takes over eddie’s role in the school hierarchy (though he’s a lot more confrontational than eddie and is known for beating up bullies, especially people who go after the kids he takes under his wing). he wouldn’t be into D&D but he’d host for the kids and buy snacks and shit. he’d also probably repeat senior year once or twice.

in regard to the upside down stuff, let’s just say steve takes the kids under his wing in s1 and protects them from bullies (he’s always wanted younger siblings) and subsequently gets involved with it from the start

meanwhile, eddie decides to put his effort into school and sports so he can get a scholarship and stay on the sidelines of the school hierarchy (the middle ground basically where no one bothers him). when will leaves for california, eddie becomes DM for the party and gets pulled into all the bullshit when something happens during a campaign at steve’s house.

eddie is surprised the school Bad Boy steve harrington is actually a softie and surrogate big brother to like 4-6 kids and kind of immediately falls in love. bonus points if steve kills some demodogs with The Bat to save eddie and eddie’s internal monologue is just “oh god that was hot why was that hot”

I think there could be something interesting in a Titanic-ish Steddie au where the roles are kind of reversed.

Steve, stealing his way onto the ship to escape his parents, left without a penny to his name. Robin joins him, is the one who sneaks him on technically bc she actually has a ticket. Third class is vastly different to what Steve was expecting, but he knows wealth well enough that he can sneak into first and blend in.

Eddie only has money bc of his fathers shady buisiness. It's not something he's used to and he absolutely despises how he'd been forced away from Wayne. It's why he's so excited when he's able to pick Steve out in a crowd- he blends well, but Eddies able to recognize someone pretending, the way he is.

They both bond over their identically oppossing circumstances and having horrendous family members. But, working together, they're able to make the trip fun- at least, that's the aim. Neither expected to fall in love along the way.

Steve comes back from practice. Hopper isn’t sure which it is, whether it’s basketball or swim, but he looks stressed no matter what. 

He always looks stressed after practice.

“You can quit, you know,” Hopper says from the couch. What possessed him to say that in this moment, he doesn’t know, but it’s been something he’s thought about saying to the kid for the past week. 

Steve stops mid-step on the way to his room. Hopper can smell the chlorine from here, so he guesses it was swim practice. 

“What?” he says. 

“You can quit if you want.” 

“I won’t get into college otherwise,” Steve says. 

Not why did you say that? or I don’t want to.

I won’t get into college. 

“You don’t have to go to college,” Hopper says. “I didn’t, and I like to think I did alright.” 

“I don’t want to be a cop.” 

“I don’t think any department would have you,” Hopper says honestly. 

Steve smiles at that, but they both know that’s as close as they’re gonna get to talking about the last two months, when Steve was in the back of the squad car more than he was out of it, until he finally said something about couch surfing and sleeping in his car when his “friends” stopped wanting him around. Until Hopper offered up his own place, so long as Steve quit dealing drugs to try to afford a proper place to sleep.

Hopper wishes he’d seen it sooner and then shoves that thought out of his head. He can’t go back. All he can do is meet Steve where he’s at and help him now.

“You’ve got options, is all I’m saying.” 

Steve nods. He doesn’t say anything else, just goes right to his room. 

The next day, he comes back right after school for the first time, and he looks so much happier.

Eddie can't remember the last time he's been able to breathe right. 

Since freshman year, since his coach saw him take off down the football field, his life has been running. Cross country in the fall, indoor in the winter, outdoor in the spring. He runs and runs and runs and breathes fine while he does it. 

It's when he stops that air can't seem to find its way into his lungs. 

It's when he stops that he sees that he hasn't broken his PR in two weeks. It's when he stops that he sees how much college costs. It's when he stops that he realizes he has to study for a test. It's when he stops that he changes out of his shorts and into his work clothes, ready for a shift at Thatcher. 

He can't stop. He has to keep running. He has to break his PR and get the scholarship. He has to keep his grades up. He has to keep working to cover what the scholarship won't. 

No one else is telling him this. Not his coaches, not his teammates, and certainly not Wayne. 

Eddie can't breathe, and it's no one's fault but his own.

Im in finals hell currently but stranger things and steddie have their claws in me once again so have this. fic idea thing for a role reversal au between steve and eddie

Season 1, Will Byers disappears and Eddie may be a freak, but shit, missing kid, so he goes on a few of the search parties with his uncle. And he keeps going, even when Wayne's hours mean he can't go anymore: just grabs the lamp torch and walks through the woods for a few hours when he can’t sleep, often on his own. It’s creepy as hell out there, he keeps feeling like something is watching him, but whenever he tries to sleep he ends up spending hours staring at his ceiling instead so whatever. It’s something to do. He keeps doing it even after they fish out Will’s body from the quarry: Hawkins’ nicer when it’s quiet.

He tried to like, talk to Jonathan a few times at school, freaks should stick together etc, but it didn’t exactly. Work. Still, he finds himself wandering past the Byers’ house and when he sees the lights blinking like crazy and hears the noises coming from inside he decides to investigate.

Steve, meanwhile, saw Nancy’s gun and decided shit was already weird enough, running out of the narrative none the wiser. For now. Eddie bursts into the house just in time to see the Demorgogon: his turn at being a protagonist!

The following seasons would go in the same vein. Eddie gets reverse adopted by Dustin on virtue of being a cool older male figure who’s into DnD and probably spends a lot of time grabbing the kids and running instead of getting his ass beat by the villain of the week: THIS protagonist is a runner, and he gets way fewer concussions about it

(Steve, meanwhile, gets dumped without even knowing what made Nancy change so much. No friends, because his previous ones were assholes, and no girlfriend, because he’s bullshit: he’s a pretty lonely guy.)

Nancy won’t let Eddie hang around the kids while dealing, so he picks up a job as Scoops Ahoy instead. Please picture this in your mind. It takes a minute for his, huh. Loud. personality to grow on Robin, but they have that kind of wlw/mlm acerbic friendship, you know the one. When there’s two gays on shift NOTHING gets done. 

Decoding russian cyphers is great fodder for future DnD puzzles and he has a grand ol’ time up until they get kidnapped; he gets a few traumas about it and also a mutual coming out, which is nice because he really thought he’d die the only gay person in Hawkins.

Steve gets a job at some sorts of sports goods store in Starcourt; his parents were NOT happy that he didn’t get into any college. That’s where he meets Chrissy: she needs new shoes for cheer practice, he flirts with her, they actually go on a date, and he’s done enough introspection to realize boy, she is NOT having fun here. He apologizes, SHE apologizes, they’re both cute about it, he drives her home, and somehow they become friends instead. He deserves that.

So in ‘86, when Chrissy needs something to silence the nightmares, she goes to her good pal Steve Harrington at Family Video instead: maybe a movie would help. They chat a bit, he proposes they watch “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” after his shift, and then she starts floating, which isn’t a great moment for anyone involved

In his scramble to climb over the counter to drag her down, Steve walks on the tv remote that controls the display TV, turning the volume up. He had put Grease on when Chrissy walked in: it’s one of her favorite. “Summer Nights” starts blaring, and it’s not her favorite but shit, i’m in charge of the plot here, it works enough that she collapses to the ground, in a bad, bad shape, but alive.

Lucas is pretty much the only one of the kids who’s close-ish to Steve; I figure he reached out to the last best ball boy of hawkins high for tips when he tried out for the basketball team. Don’t ask me how they became actual friends, just know that they are, so the next day he goes looking for Steve to talk about recent My Friends Don’t Like Me Balling teenage angst and finds a crime scene instead. Steve isn’t at the hospital either: he’s at the police station, being questioned because the cops think he’s the one who broke a few of Chrissy’s limbs and put her in a coma (the main theory is that he asked her out, she said no, and he, what, flew in a rage? It’s not like he can tell them the TRUTH. The cameras don’t even work inside the family video.)

Cue the rest of the season. With one long freakout on Steve’s part because his parents are rich enough for him to post bail but jesus christ there isn’t enough money in the world to forget the fact that magic is real and hates you specifically

“What the hell!” Eddie shouted, pointing past Dustin at the TV screen. 

Dustin winced and raised his hands slowly, “Eddie, hey, uh… you want to come in and sit down?”

“Yes! We have a couch in the break room, how about you come sit down?” Robin chimed in from over Dustin’s shoulder. 

Eddie’s gaze darted rapidly from between the TV screen and the three of them standing there, Dustin’s hands were still outstretched in what probably was meant to be a calming manner. 

It was not a calming manner. 

“Okay, Dustin. Quick question, why should I stay here and more likely than you get involved with that?” Eddie paused to gesture at the TV screen, hand shaking. “When I could, instead, not?”

Dustin winced again and exchanged looks with the other two. He looked back at Eddie and let out a sigh, “Because it’s probably already too late, Eddie.”

“Dustin you know I am excellent at running away, it’s never too late.” Eddie couldn’t stop his hands from shaking. Steve fucking Harrington not only was at his drug stash this morning but he was also most likely the top suspect in a murder case.

“Eddie…” Dustin started, but paused when Robin put a hand on his shoulder. 

She looked over at him and Eddie froze, for Robin wasn’t just looking at him, but was looking into him. Like seeing like. “Hunt the freak.” Robin said quietly. 

Oh. Shit. 

Eddie swallowed shakily. Any reason to go after those who were different, Harrington might be the top suspect right now, but that didn’t mean it would stay that way. “That couch is sounding pretty good after all.”

Robin gestured to the back room before she crossed to lock the store door, flipping the sign to closed with a sigh. Eddie followed them blindly back into the break room, still not processing what was happening. Hunt the freak, played in a loop in his head. He sank down on the couch and buried his head in his hands, what the hell happened. 

Eddie looked up at the others, Robin was perched on a chair while Dustin had claimed the other end of the couch. The redhead leaned against a patch of wall, anxiety on every line of her posture. Max? Yeah, Max sounded right. Eddie paused, he had forgotten a very important detail, “Who died?”

Dustin winced again, before he exchanged a look with Max. “Max and I think it was most likely Chrissy Cunningham. We biked by Steve’s house before coming here and it was a mess, police everywhere. We, uh, saw someone get carried out and then we came here.”

Eddie froze. 

“She was pretty messed up yesterday, I ran into her in the bathroom at school and she did not look good.” Max continued before rubbing at her head, brow furrowed. 

Well shit. Eddie was supposed to have picked up Chrissy after the game yesterday. He had gotten out of Hellfire and she wasn’t there, but that wasn’t surprising, people bailed on buying all the time. He figured she had just got swept up after the game and gone to some after party. But not this…

He didn’t think she would have gotten murdered… Maybe if he had wrapped up the session sooner. Maybe if he had looked around more or had just given her weed after lunch instead of promising something harder. 

Eddie swallowed and tried to fight back the guilt swarming him. What fucking if. “Oh, well. Shit. Harrington did that? I thought you said he was okay now, Dustin? Not, uh, a murderer…”

“He’s not!” Dustin shouted, indignation showing in every line of his body before he repeated more softly, “He’s not.” 

Robin placed a hand on Dustin’s shoulder, “Eddie, there’s some weird shit that goes on in Hawkins, weirder stuff than you have seen before. The kind of weird shit involving monsters, but right now what we need to know is what you know and what Steve told you. I can promise you, Steve did not murder Chrissy Cunningham. I know Steve was a jerk back in school, but I swear to you, he has changed. And even back then, he was not going around murdering people.” She leveled him with a clear look, no bullshit, and continued. “Please tell us what you know.”

Eddie desperately wanted to know what shit they had gone through together that Robin Buckley, band geek, was so unwaveringly defending Steve Harrington. He also really did not want to find out first hand, but from the looks that all three of them were leveling at him, Eddie thought he might already be involved in their shit. “Oh, well. She wanted to buy some…” Eddie paused and glanced at Max and Dustin. “Stuff from me yesterday, but she didn’t show up after the game so I went about my night.” Eddie paused and looked down at his feet, hands clenched in his jeans, he had just left. He thought it was alright and so he just left. 

Dustin chimed in, “Wait, Steve was supposed to give me home after Hellfire yesterday… I thought his date had just gone really well, but maybe he ran into Chrissy there? Or something?”

Robin scoffed, “His date most likely did not go well, that dingus doesn’t know what the hell he wants.” Robin stopped herself before she could continue, her brief laughter at Steve’s date cut off as her face fell. “But I can mock him later, more important things now. Eddie what happened next?”

“Uh, well I this morning I went out to Reefer Rick’s place, I was supposed to drop off some cash and pick up some stuff. And out of one of the boats, out jumps Harrington. He looked really fucked up, not physically, just mentally really bad off. And well, I guess dead bodies would do that… he uh, roughed me up a bit. Well, just startled, I think? He didn’t actually hit me or anything, but then he paid me to come here and get a message to you all. Code Red?”

Eddie stopped as the others all inhaled suddenly, the anxiety in the room rocketing up. The three of them exchanged looks and Dustin cursed under his breath. 

Eddie hazarded a guess, “Code Red is bad?”

“Code Red is very bad.” Max said with a jerky nod.

That very much did not sound good and Eddie knew what he was good at, running away. “Well, that sounds, not great. I think it is time for me to be heading home…”

Robin winced and cleared her throat, “Uh, not a good plan. Sorry. But you are probably safer with us for one thing, from what I understand, although I have only really been through this once, things tend to get pretty gruesome after Code Red is called. But also, they are probably… well they are probably going to have you on the suspect list pretty soon.”

Eddie blinked in disbelief and shot Robin a flat look. “What.”

“Uh, the whole ‘freak’ thing?” Robin winced again, “But even without that, Steve hangs out with basically two people. Me and Dustin. I do band, but what does Dustin do…” She trailed off meaningfully. 

Eddie stared blankly at Robin as she made small hand gestures before it finally clicked. Shit. Dustin was in Hellfire, they were going to think that Steve was tied up with something with Eddie. 

Dustin stood up and moved in front of Eddie, a pleading look on his face. “Eddie, we can explain more on the ride there, but I need you to trust me. You are not going to escape suspicion on this and even without all of the stupid people in this town, the implications of Code Red means you probably are still in danger.”

Eddie was very good at running, thank you very much Dustin Henderson. But also… he hadn’t gone looking for Chrissy and maybe he could have saved her from whatever this Code Red worthy thing was. A monster by the sounds of what Robin had said earlier? It sure as hell sounded like he was already going to be a suspect in this mess.

And maybe he could actually save someone this time. Maybe he could help.

He would much rather run away from this whole mess, but it sounded like it was too late.

Steve as Zagreus - Determined to get out of the underworld, rebellious son. Charming and good at getting his ass kicked.

Eddie as Thanatos - God of the dead, in love with Steve since childhood, everyone thinks he’s scary but he’s just a guy. (His companion would be a bat this time round tho because of course.)

Nancy as Megaera - Fury with a gun, Steve’s Ex, cares about her job and dumped Steve for being to immature, nectar starts a friendship.

Robin as Dusa - Instead of just a head she’d be a full Gorgon, Steve tries to flirt with her but she eventually she’s like I’m gay and the platonic soulmatism kicks in, Steve starts matchmaking her and Nancy like it’s her job and running to her about Eddie being mean to him.

Dustin as Hypnos - Eddies little brother, playfully bullies Steve for his deaths, gets distracted at work, sassy

I’m not sure if Hopper and Joyce should be Hades and Nyx or Olympians but the rest of the party are definitely the younger Olympians.

Max as Hermes because she’d deffs be in on this and is the Zoomer.

Controversially Lucas as Artemis because he’s sweet and awkward and deserves a goated boon. He’s also the ranger of the party guys so this makes sense.

El as Athena Goated boons, defence for days, very strong and wanting to fix her family.

Also controversially Mike as Ares he’s our little hotheaded paladin and him being the reverse of El is pretty cute.

Will as Aphrodite but he doesn’t really get love, biggest heart for days, talks more about familial love when talking to Steve and mentions he’s nervous about his role to Steve. Crush on Mike.

Argyle as Dionysus because it just fits a lot.

I’m struggling with Jonathan because I think he needs to be Wills brother always but also I think he’d really fit Charon but how am I going to make him buds with Dionysus of all people.

Murray as Poseidon idk why that fits but Murray being kind of a dick who gives you things just fits.

I’m struggling now to think of more. Joyce as Demeter and Hopper as Zeus I think would also fit and obviously I’d have to overhaul a lot of who’s related to who to make this all work and make the kids not related to each other obviously but yeah. This is the brainrot. I won’t be writing this obviously but it’s going around in my head.

Stranger Things fic idea

I don’t think I seen this before but what about a somewhat role reversal au where all the party members ages get swaped (Eddie, Robin, Steve, Nancy and Jonathan are eleven and el, mike, dustan, will, Lucas and Max are around 16?) and instead of el escaping the lab, Robin and Steve (007 & 008?) are the ones that escape the lab. in this fic Jonathan, Nancy, and Barbara would already be really close friends at the beginning and they would know Eddie because he plays DnD with the older boy. El would be hoppers daughter and mikes boyfrien and Rodin and Steve would be twins that escaped Hawkings lab and ends up hiding in Nancy basement. Possible steddie and ronance.

Robin and Steve would obviously be psychically connected and be able to communicate telepathically but I think their powers would work differently from each other. I think Robin would be at telekinesis and telling we’re people at while Steve would be more of a empath that can help control people emotions.

To be honest that’s all I got. Sorry if it’s rambling I just wanted to share this idea.

oooh actually yes! i've thought about it a little and have even done a little talking about it with some others before! and i think it's a totally fun idea to explore!!

truth be told, i think ALL of your suggestions here sort of go hand in hand, y'know? like you wouldn't have to just pick one of those because they ALL work for a role reversal - for the SAME role reversal. because like steve is popular AND rich AND has the whole forced conformity thing going on (before he wakes up and realizes oh, this isn't as great as everyone says it is and i don't want to be like this anymore), and on the other side of the coin eddie is a dweeb AND is poor AND is rebellious.

that's the great thing about these characters, they're all so three dimensional and have enough depth with them that you can really look at them through a lot of different lenses (like the ones you mention here!) and mess around with all of those traits and characteristics and roles to see how each one affects the character both individually AND combined together.

so, to answer your question lol, i would probably go for all three and make it popular, rich, forced conformity eddie and dweeb poor rebellious steve. why limit yourself, yknow? 😊

New Fics

Okay, so, I kinda forgot my tumblr is actually something I gotta update.

I’ve definitely transitioned into a Stranger Things hyperfixation, though I do plan on continuing my other current fics. But I have two ST fics to announce!

I completed a 30 chapter fic for NaNoWriMo 2022 (and won!) called A Distant Ship Smoke On The Horizon! It’s a Post-series AU and an Idiots-to-Lovers Steddie AU featuring Nanny!Steve, Rockstar!Eddie, and a plot line that actually considers implications of Season 3 of Stranger Things. I will not be writing a sequel, but I believe I left off at a satisfying ending.

My current in-progress fic is called Having The Time Of Your Life. This is not similar to the previous fic, and will not be Steddie. The premise is that it’s an Age Reversal and Role Reversal AU (with Eddie, Erica, and Holly as exceptions) where The Party are the older group and and the High Schoolers are the younger group. Although in the long-term, the focus of the fic will be on Steve and Dustin’s brotherly relationship, the fic has begun with Middle Schooler!Steve being taken to the Upside Down in Season 1 (in place of Barb, who lives) and the aftermath of surviving and coming back.
