Stephen Green: Winter
Stephen Green describes ‘WInter’ (the opening track on his 2015 release Thirty) as ‘an almost Christmas song’ and I think that’s a good way of describing it. It’s Christmas-y in the same way that Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’ is Christmas-y — it references the holiday but does so in a way that the song still has year-round appeal.
Besides, Green has some amazing full-on Christmas songs. I’ve had the tracks from his single Songs For Christmas Movies, Vol. 1. on high rotation for the last couple of years. If you don’t know them, check them out.
As if that weren’t enough holiday music, Green is 1/4 of local pop-rock band Fairgale.
Fairgale appears on the new A Trinity Hall Christmas collection. The album (available here) contains a variety of artists and genres, who perform a blend of familiar Christmas classics and new holiday compilations. Fairgale contribute an amazing version of ‘Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home).
If a soild collection of local Christmas music weren’t enough to make you buy it, think about this: proceeds from the album support the Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Good music for a good cause? You can’t ask for a better deal than that.
More Christmas and Holiday Music from Newfoundland & Labrador
Stay tuned for more great Christmas songs from Newfoundland and Labrador.
I'm a big fan of traditional Christmas music, I love to hear a modern rendition of a 300 year old carol but, occasionally, a brand new song comes to my attention and dominates my Christmas listening. Newfoundland and Labrador's musicians have been holding their own in both regards. I’ll be sharing local songs —both old and new— from now until Christmas in my 2023 NL Music Advent Calendar.
