Disabled Billy and Steve Week
Day 6- Relationships
My prompt- Carol and Steve: Friends to the End
-•-•-•-
It’s a Wednesday, which means Steve and Carol are having one of their weekly get-togethers.
This time, they’ve decided not to go out or do anything fancy, opting to just lay in Carol's room in a fort they made of every pillow, blanket, and stuffie they could find. They’re both in fuzzy pajamas, wearing skin care masks and gossiping like they’re still fourteen.
Carol surprises Steve by talking about themselves instead of somebody else for once, “Do you remember being little, and promising to get married if we weren’t already with somebody by the time we were fifteen?”
As if that would ever happen. Carol Maryanne Perkins is his best friend for life. Sure, a platonic marriage was possible, but Steve didn’t think two disabled people getting married for friendship would result in the best outcome. Leave it up to the shitty money stealing government to ruin a perfectly good thing.
Steve scrunches his nose up, trying to show in his face how he feels about the old idea.
Carol gets it, even when Steve doesn’t feel ready to use words. She laughs and rolls her eyes, “I know, right? We thought fifteen was like, totally grown up.”
It is actually kind of funny, that they’ve known each other for that long, since they were in diapers really, and have so many silly bets like that running. Steve smiles and holds her hand, now that her purple nail polish is dry and the action won’t make them both sticky and miserable.
Carol isn’t usually the type to dwell in the past, but she lingers on the subject of their childish view of love, “And now I’d be the bride, and you’d be the groom.”
It’s true, and Steve finds it somewhat amusing as well. Nobody expected there to be two trans kids in the middle of Hawkins fucking Indiana, and especially not for them to be popular best friends. Mixing up the narrative is what they do.
But Steve doesn’t get what Carol needs. He’s not the greatest at social cues and things, but he can tell there’s a reason Carol is being so reflective. He furrows his eyebrows and tips his head to one side, signaling his growing confusion.
Out of nowhere, Carol rips off the bandaid, and Steve’s heart with it, “I know you like Tommy, Stevie. I see it when you’re around him.”
Instant panic. Being in love with your best friend's fiancé is a big no. Ever since this dumb crush started, Steve has been terrified of Carol finding out and breaking off their years of friendship. All for one really funny, super sweet, freckle faced cutie.
Thankfully, Carol doesn’t react in the millions of horrible ways that Steve has imagined. She actually seems happy, “Hey, before you freak out, I’m open to sharing. I just want you to know right away I don’t feel that way about you. You’re my best friend, and that’s all.”
Steve nods happily. There’s no way he’d ever feel anything romantic for Carol. Their bond just isn’t like that. This friendship was written in the stars, as exactly that, just a friendship.
He makes a little scratching out motion with his hand, to show Carol he is not interested in that.
“Oh, right! You only like guys! Duh, why was I even nervous?” Carol laughs nervously, and Steve can detect the hint of annoyed sarcasm.
It’s not at him, it’s at herself; Carol thought Steve might still see her as a boy.
Steve feels sad for her, and opens his arms up for a hug. Touch isn’t his thing, it makes him uncomfortable usually, but he understands that kind of pain and wants to soothe it in his best friend.
Carol smiles softly, and clarifies before jumping into anything, “Are you sure, sweetie?”
Steve just nods and makes a grabby hand motion, inviting her into his arms.
“Alright, here goes nothing.” Carol declares, leaning forward and wrapping her arms around Steve, giggling when he taps and pats her shoulders, happy stimming all over the place.
Not that Steve really knows an appropriate amount of time to hug for, but he knows this one lasts a long time, and that fills his heart up with happiness.
He feels ready to speak to tell her, “I love you, CeCe.”
“And I love you Stevie.” Carol replies back, automatic but genuine.
“Let’s never ever stop being friends. Ever.” Steve hums, fiddling with his soft sleeves, an anxious stim.
He knows Carol will be by his side, but sometimes he needs to hear it repeated, when his rsd flares up and he gets bad thoughts in his head.
Carol gets rsd too, and paranoia, which used to lead to some explosive arguments when they were younger kids without control of their big big feelings. Nowadays, they feel safe asking for assurance, and giving hugs, or making promises. Whatever it takes to show their best friend love is true without causing a fight first.
“I wasn’t planning on it, babe. I’m gonna be here forever. Even when you steal my boyfriend.” Carol laughs softly, making sure to tack on the end, just in case, “That was a joke.”
Steve could tell, but he appreciates it anyways. Better safe than heartbroken.
Speaking of, he wants to tell some of what he’s been thinking about when it comes to this whole confession, “Tommy has a big heart. He’ll be able to share.”
“You do too, honey. That heart in your little chest is bigger than your hair, and that’s saying something.” Carol teases him.
Steve throws his hands up defensively, “You told me big hair was cool!”
Carol pokes his tummy, a playful action Steve gave her permission to do whenever the impulse strikes, “Well, it seemed like you thought as much when Billy Hargrove got a perm!”
“I’m allowed to have a crush on three guys at once!” Steve rolls his eyes, before realizing what he said, and cupping a hand over his mouth.
Too late. Carol is beyond interested. Eyebrow raised, and a smirk on her lips, she asks him, “Three? Who’s the other one?”
“Nope. That secret is guarded with my life.” Steve turns up his nose to act guarded, but it’s useless.
Carol pouts and makes puppy eyes like nobody’s ever seen, “Oh come on, bubba. I won’t tell anyone.”
Steve hesitantly starts to think about it, “You gotta promise.”
“Cross my heart, pumpkin.” Carol makes the action, totally sincere.
Steve breaks, “It’s Jonathan Byers.”
And Carol actually squeals, “Awwww! Stevie, that’s adorable!”
“He’s dating Chrissy now, so don’t bring it up ever again.” Steve warns, half stern and half fond.
“I said I wouldn’t and I meant it.” Carol twists her hair around her finger, acting innocent, though she of course advises, “Buuut I also know for a fact that Chrissy Cunningham hasn’t been in a strictly monogamous relationship since highschool, so don’t talk yourself out of anything yet.”
They both laugh about it. Steve will ask Tommy out, and then he’ll settle down for a little while. Sure, this relationship business is serious, but this is a journey that’s going to take a long time, and Steve is just starting it out. Having all those partners isn’t something he has to worry about yet.
Though, thinking about it in reflection, he does start to get a little worried.
“Carol?”
“Yes, baby?” She asks right away.
Steve rubs the fabric of his sweatshirt in between his fingers, “How many boyfriends is too many?”
“That’s not up to me, sugar plum. I only got one.” Carol shrugs.
“Fiancé.” Steve corrects because he has to, additionally feeling the need to point out, “And two girlfriends.”
“Duh. My heart has all the room for them, so I might as well. But I’m done. I feel complete now, and three people is good enough for me.”
Her explanation makes enough sense, but Steve just doesn’t know what to do with it.
He has way too much love in his heart to understand it really, and trying to add limits just makes him feel weird. Maybe it’s the autism. Maybe he’s truly as freaky as everyone says.
“Wrong answer Carol. Didn’t you know I’m a sexless, unfeeling being?”
Carol doesn’t humor that kind of thinking for a second. She holds his hands, and looks him dead in the face, “Sweetie, your feelings are real, even if they show themselves a little differently. Loud hands and humming are your butterflies in the tummy.”
“Wait, you mean you can tell when I have a crush?” Steve realizes with a strange feeling.
“Sort of. But I’m a people reader, I notice everything.” Carol exaggerated.
A smile spreads on Steve’s face with a joke, “I get what people mean when they say neurodivergence is a super power.”
Carol fake gags at his joke, “Ugh, gross.”
Yeah, it is. Steve giggles, “I know!”
Maybe, Steve realizes from all of this, the best answer is that nobody needs to define him. He can do things his own way, be that friendship or falling in love, and he’ll be just fine, as long as he has his CeCe and his Tommy.

Alternate forms of communication can be ostracized, ignored, and discriminated against. That’s why today I’ve chosen to represent the I-ASC, or The International Association for Spelling as Communication.
I-ASC works for and with neurodivergent, nonspeaking communities to support all methods of AAC, but focuses on spelling and typing to communicate. Their approach is based in research and in working with disabled individuals and their families to find what is best for them.
Not only do they have a library of resources, they also offer training and lessons for both the nonspeaking individual and their family. I really like that the I-ASC takes the time to ensure that the disabled person understands and can utilize the method they are given rather than just choosing it for them and leaving it at that.
Personal stories from “spellers” who were helped by I-ASC talk about how they provided a community to the nonspeaking folks, and helped them feel less alone. So not only are they advocating for the human right of communication, but they are also becoming involved in our community and assisting in personalized ways.
Donations will help any nonspeaking individual access the programs and fund their education. They have an FAQ section on the website under the “Give” section where they detail ways to donate.
If any of this interests you, I’m providing a link to the site right here.

Good Vibrations Part One
Hello, it's me, back at it again with another Steddie AU.
Anyway, if I were tagging this AU, these would be the most important ones: Deaf Steve Harrington; Tooth-rotting Fluff; Getting Together
If you wanna be tagged in future parts, just let me know!
As always, if you see any typos, no you didn't ;)
----
Steve has blown through three pairs of hearing aids in the past year. The first pair had lasted a few years and needed replacement because of normal wear and tear. The second pair was sacrificed during that fight with Jonathan. He hadn't been wearing them, but they'd been in Steve's pocket, and he'd landed at just the right angle to feel them shatter. The third pair was taken by the Russians because, despite Robin's shouting and cursing at them for being dumbasses (and this was before she actually knew what they were for), they accused him of recording their kidnapping and torture.
Honestly, he wouldn't recommend fighting Russians and Billy and Mind Flayers and driving while nearly totally deaf.
The funniest part of it all, though, is that Steve doesn't even use hearing aids regularly. He normally only wears them at home. The pair lost to Jonathan were present because, well, that whole day had been a lot for Steve, and he needed the comfort of knowing he could stop reading lips the moment it became too exhausting for him. The pair lost to the Russians was because he'd been getting ready to tell Robin about being deaf. She'd already clocked the weird things he does (well, weird to her, normal to Steve), and he figured letting her in on the big secret would bring them a little closer.
Of course, that didn't go the way he expected. Robin thought he was confessing love and decided to beat him to the punch. That's how he learned Robin is a lesbian, and Steve couldn't let her be the only one admitting to something like that, so he told her about being bi and his long-standing, hopeless crush. And being deaf. But the bi with a crush thing seemed more important in the moment. She took it in stride, it brought them closer, and then Robin asked if Steve could teach her sign language.
Which meant that Steve had to learn sign language because he never had. Between not wanting to feel even more different than he already did and trying to convince his parents that, really, everything was fine and he didn't need to go to a special school for deaf and hard-of-hearing kids, he'd never learned. Learning it had somehow felt like an admission of weakness, and that was the last thing he wanted. But he learned for Robin, and they stumbled through sign language together, creating new signs only they knew.
But that's all in the past now, and Steve is working his ass off at Family Video to afford a new pair because he refuses to ask his parents for money. If he asks them, they'll come back, and that's the last thing he wants. They don't need to have all their worries confirmed that Steve is helpless, and he doesn't want them anywhere near Hawkins "Hellscape" Indiana.
So. Working his ass off, taking extra shifts, and babysitting the kids as much as he can to make up for the whole Friends and Family Discount he gives their parents. He's exhausted, but he gets to recharge somewhat during his lunch break.
About a ten-minute walk from the Family Video is a record store, which Steve has started visiting daily to just breathe. The lone worker in the store is usually too busy listening to her own music to pay Steve any attention, letting him wander and try to determine which records will best serve him.
Steve drifts over to the rock and heavy metal section, hoping to find a new album but unsurprised when he doesn't. He browses through them anyway, moving past Metallica and Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. He already has all of these albums on his shelf at home. He has the cassette tapes for them, too.
But he really wants something new. He likes the novelty of experiencing unfamiliar vibrations through the speaker, letting them thrum through his fingertips and into his bones. It's fun and relaxing, and after all the bullshit he's been through lately, he probably deserves something relaxing.
After glancing over a few more familiar albums, Steve sighs and glances at the counter by the door. The lone worker is standing there, headphones over her ears, and idly flipping through a magazine. She's chewing gum, and Steve braces himself for the sheer hell of trying to read her lips without making it obvious he's reading her lips while she's got something in her mouth to disrupt the normal shape of words and sounds.
But he has to try. Steve takes one more deep breath before walking over, shoving his hands into his pockets when he comes to a stop at the counter. The girl raises a hand, motioning for him to wait, so he stays quiet as she finishes reading her page. She flips to the next one before looking up, not making any move to pull her headphones off.
"Hi. Do you have any new rock or metal albums coming in soon," Steve asks, feeling the vibrations of speech in his throat and hoping his words aren't too loud.
They don't seem to be. The girl doesn't flinch or pull back. She just looks him up and down, taking in the polo shirt and the nice khakis and the Family Video vest he forgot to take off before leaving. Finally, her neck and shoulders jerk slightly, and Steve knows she's huffed in annoyance. "No," she says, the word clear enough in the shape of her lips for Steve to know it immediately.
He frowns slightly, his fingernails digging into his palms. Steve wouldn't mind just leaving now, but something keeps him there. He just...he really wants new music. He needs something new. "Are there gonna be any shows nearby?" he asks.
The girl rolls her eyes and says something, her mouth distorted by gum-chewing. Steve can barely make out the words "you" and "check" from her response. Thankfully, it's accompanied by a vague gesture at something behind him. Steve looks over his shoulder to see a bulletin board with flyers plastered across it.
"Right. Thanks," he says, nodding to her before walking over. The flyers are all different colors with various fonts that scream for Steve's attention. Some of them are for bands, some are advertisements of garage sales or instruments in need of a new home, and others are just business flyers from stores nearby.
He's seen the bulletin board before, but he's never actually paid attention to it. Steve has always been laser-focused on browsing the records. But now, Steve carefully reviews each flyer advertising shows. Some are for comedy shows, which he immediately dismisses. One seems promising, but then he sees how far it is, and Steve definitely can't do an overnight trip like that.
Finally, Steve sees a flyer advertising a show at the Hideout later that week. It's close enough that he won't be out overnight. The place is kind of seedy, but Steve figures he can find some corner near the stage to hide. Or he can bring Robin and let her help him navigate any potential social situations. He tugs the flyer off the board, gaze lingering on the "Corroded Coffin" emblazoned across the top.
He knows the band. Of course, he knows the band. He's extremely familiar with their singer. From a distance. Honestly, Eddie Munson probably doesn't have the best impression of him, but Steve's heart never really cared about that. Because Eddie is like everything Steve wants to be: he's loud and unafraid of being so, he doesn't care about his image and how others perceive him, and he looks like his laugh sounds beautiful. Steve wouldn't know if he's actually right about that last point, but Eddie throws his head back when he laughs, eyes crinkled and hand over his stomach like his muscles ache.
His mouth suddenly feels dry, but he's also filled with unprecedented courage. Steve has graduated (barely), and that means a significantly lower chance of running into Eddie during the day if watching the show somehow goes wrong.
Steve folds the flyer into quarters and stuffs it into his back pocket. He'll be overly aware of it being there until Robin starts her shift and he can show it to her, but that's okay. He throws a quick thanks over his shoulder as he leaves the shop, glancing up at the bell he can't hear that signals the door's opening. He vaguely remembers what bells are supposed to sound like (he'd heard a few before losing the ability to hear them), but he doesn't let himself dwell on it.
Instead, he focuses on the trip back to Family Video, keeping an eye on the road to watch for any cars he wouldn't notice otherwise.
----
When the final bell rings, Eddie Munson can't get out of class fast enough. He'd been packed for the last five minutes, and he slid out of his seat the moment that first peal rang out. He has a gig to prepare for, and every second counts. At least, each second counts until he notices something (or someone) that could prove entertaining for a while.
He spots Dustin alone near one of the exits, and Eddie decides to relieve the kid of his isolation. He waits until he's behind Dustin to shout, "Henderson!" and throw his arm over the kid's shoulders, ignoring the way he jumps like he'd been expecting an attack.
"Holy shit!" Dustin shrieks, jerking back to look up at Eddie. "Don't do that, man, you're gonna give me a heart attack."
Eddie snorts, waving away Dustin's concern as he continues toward the exit. The general flow of students trying to get out helps him along, and Dustin doesn't seem to realize they're actually moving until they've gotten into direct sunlight. "You're fine," Eddie says, "Anyway, whatcha doing all alone, Henderson? Lose your way?"
"No, I have...stuff to do today," Dustin says, shrugging as he blinks to acclimate to the sunlight.
Oh, yeah, way too cryptic for Eddie to not dig for more. "Stuff? What kinda stuff? Got a hot date? Going shopping with your mom?" he asks, and then he gasps dramatically and moves to stand in Dustin's way. He puts both hands on his shoulders and very seriously says, "Be honest, Henderson, you're seeing another DM, aren't you?"
Dustin stares at him for a few seconds before rolling his eyes and shrugging his hands off. "Who else in this town DMs?" he asks, "Other than Will, I guess, but he's still working on a campaign."
"Fair," Eddie concedes, "so, whatcha really doing?"
After a few seconds of getting nudged by the students around them, Dustin sighs and says, "I have chores, okay? But that doesn't sound cool to say, does it?"
Fair. Eddie nods in agreement and moves out of Dustin's way, continuing to follow him. "So, what, your mom picking you up today?" he asks.
"No, Steve."
"Oh, the famous Steve."
Dustin nods, looking over the parking lot before pointing to one end. "Yeah, he's awesome," Dustin says as Eddie follows the direction of his finger.
And standing there, leaning against the hood of his car and looking to the side where a group of trees is swaying in the breeze, is Steve Harrington. Steve "The Hair" Harrington. King Steve. The worst thing, Eddie thinks, is that Steve looks good. His hair is still perfect, of course, and his stupid little striped shirt is pulling against his biceps and riding up just enough for Eddie to see a tiny sliver of tanned skin above his jeans. He looks a little tense, but Eddie chalks that up to him being back on the campus after already graduating.
"Harrington? You've been talking about Steve Harrington this whole time?" Eddie asks, his voice a little strained, "How the fuck do you know Steve Harrington?"
"He's my babysitter," Dustin says, his voice implying that much should have been obvious, but Eddie wants to grab his shoulders and shake until his head rolls off.
Steve Harrington doesn't babysit. He doesn't know nerds that talk about D&D. He doesn't drive nerds around. At least, he never did in high school. Granted, Eddie never actually talked to Steve, but everybody knew that Steve Harrington was too cool for, well, anything that wasn't the typical jock and popular guy shit.
As he's thinking about the last time he saw Steve Harrington (in the halls, while the guy had bruises and looked worse for wear), they get within shouting distance. And Eddie has zero impulse control when Wayne isn't around, so he doesn't think before shouting, "Hey, Harrington!"
Next to him, Dustin whips his head to glare at Eddie. And Steve Harrington doesn't fucking react. He just keeps staring at that group of trees like it's the most fascinating thing in the world. "Dude," Dustin says, grabbing Eddie's arm and yanking harshly, "don't shout like that."
Eddie frowns, anger beginning to simmer in his stomach at the complete lack of acknowledgment. "Why are you upset with me?" he asks, gesturing at Steve as he continues, "I'm not the one being a douchebag here."
Dustin opens his mouth, about to say something, only to snap it shut once more. He frowns like he's just realized he can't say something, and huffs with frustration. "Just...just don't do that," he finally says, keeping a hand on Eddie's arm and dragging him across the parking lot. And, yeah, something is definitely weird here.
Instead of just walking up to Steve, they make a large arch until they're within Steve's line of sight.
Eddie watches as Steve notices them, seeing Dustin first and pushing off the car. He relaxes for a split second until he sees Eddie and his shoulders tense again.
Great.
Once they're close enough for Eddie to count the moles above the collar of Steve's shirt, Dustin grins and says, "Hey, Steve." But it's odd, because Eddie has never heard Dustin talk this slow or this carefully, like he's doing his best to enunciate his words.
Steve flashes a grin and ruffles Dustin's hair. "Hey, twerp, you're late," he says. He then glances at Eddie, his grin becoming a little smaller, and says, "Hey, Munson."
Wait. Steve Harrington knows Eddie's name? And he called him by it? He said Munson, not Freak. Eddie stares at Steve for a few seconds before nodding. "Harrington," he says, "how the fuck did you become a babysitter?"
Is he just imagining things, or is Steve looking at his mouth? Like, really intensely. He's definitely not, because Steve looks up after a few seconds with a raised eyebrow. "I needed some extra cash. Also, don't swear around Dustin. I'm the one who gets in trouble when he curses in front of his mom."
Something about the words makes Eddie grin. Never in a million years would he have guessed that he'd be talking to Steve Harrington. And he would have laughed you into Mordor itself if you suggested their conversation would be about Dustin Henderson swearing in front of his mother. "What's his mom do when he swears?" he asks.
Because he can feel the conversation veering into something potentially embarrassing for him, Dustin lets go of Eddie and starts pushing Steve toward the driver's side of his car. "Okay, we gotta go. So many chores, so little time," he says, his voice back to that normal speed and enunciation.
Steve frowns slightly, looking down at Dustin and tilting his head just slightly. "What?" he asks. Instead of actually answering, Dustin just makes some vague gesture with his hand and looks at the car. "Oh, right. Go ahead and get in the car. And, uh, see you later, Munson."
"Is that a promise?" Eddie asks before he can think better of it.
Steve pauses, looking at Eddie's mouth with a slight scrunch to his nose. He seems to be considering something as Dustin scrambles into the passenger seat, watching them with narrowed eyes. Honestly, Eddie is surprised he's not blasting the horn to hurry Steve up. Finally, Steve comes to a decision and meets Eddie's eyes again. "Your band has a show tonight, right? At the Hideout? I was planning to go. So, yeah, I'll see you then, I guess."
And with that, like he hasn't just fucking rocked Eddie's world, Steve Harrington gets into his car. He makes sure Dustin is buckled before waving at Eddie and pulling out of the parking spot.
Eddie finds himself waving back, staring dumbly at the car as it pulls onto the street. It only hits him a few seconds later that Steve Harrington is coming to his show. At the Hideout. His metal show. A Corroded Coffin gig at the Hideout.
Holy. Shit.

Saw a drawing of Steve and now I'm suddenly thinking about artist Eddie who designed the Hellfire shirts and Corroded Coffin fliers and who draws the villains of his D&D campaigns to slap onto his DM screen for visual aid and doodles in class and-
And i'm thinking about Steve, in a relationship with Nancy, trying to ignore that things are rocky but knowing it all the same. He finds a notebook left behind in school and he only takes it because he forgot his own. He plans to use it for the day and then figure out whose it is and get it back to them in exchange, that's probably more than fair, right? And the person is really gonna want this back - it looks like half their life is contained in this thing; there is... a shit ton of loose paper stuffed between the pages and notes on all kinds of subjects and drawings and.... he doesn't even know what that is. Who is Vecna and what the hell is a... lich?
Anyway as he leafs through it he finds that some of the drawings are... actually really good. Like, absurdly good for being in a lined notebook that looks like it has taken a trip into a dumpster and picked up some debris on the way out.
Like! Those hands! Steve has no artistic bone in his body but he's heard people whine about drawing hands and - he looks at the hand not holding the book and back again - yeah, that's exactly what hands look like! And here - a few pages further (it's one of the most empty pages of the whole thing, mostly because this one seems to have started as a drawing and not as a page of notes that turned into a drawing) there are only a few lines on the page but it's still very clearly the back of someone's neck, the collar, one shoulder.... Then there's another one that is almost all lines, but they were all carefully placed to give the effect of perfectly windswept hair. Then there's one that he actually can't make sense of at first (he almost pages past it because it is just a few lines and dots taking up a quarter of a page of very annoyed... history notes? Maybe English.) It's just a jawline with some moles but... only the day before he had cut himself shaving a finger's width underneath those exact moles. And that's when it clicks. He goes back to the hair... yeah that- that could be him too. Maybe. He flips back to that one very detailed drawing of hands and... putting down the book he tries to get his hands into the same position - the angle is off but. Yeah. That's why they looked so perfectly...! Uhhhh... Handsy! Because they're his fucking hands!
Anyway Steve realizes that about a third of the drawings are or could be him. He realizes that he actually can't go through with giving it back because - what would he even say? "Hey found your notebook, nice shrine to me?" Yeah no. But he's... also reluctant to take it to the Lost and Found. There's something in the handwriting.... He has a feeling that it might not be a girl secretly drawing him. What if someone else connects the dots? What if they confront the mystery artist about it? Flashbacks to his fight with Jonathan, the line he crossed and immediately regretted. He doesn't want to be the cause for someone else getting called that. And unrelated to that, things with Nancy aren't great right now and it's... it's just nice to think someone is paying attention, alright?
Then Halloween happens a few days after. The Break-up(?), the demodogs, Billy and the tunnels- and afterwards it's nice to have the notebook to distract him from the pain. The mundane mystery of a schoolmate maybe having a crush on him. He might not even have to confront them - he can just figure out a way to slip it into their locker; it looks like at least half their schoolwork is crammed into this thing, no matter how half-heartedly done. They definitely want this back.
Man, I wish I could actually write this thing. Damn. Maybe I could even do a scene where Steve tries to Sherlock Holmes his way to Mystery Artist and confronts a (hatefully seething) Robin, because she sits behind him in that one class, only to find his own Watson in her instead. But alas. It cannot be.

but don't you remember? (august, honey, you were mine)
﹂ season four of "come home"
it's senior year and everything has changed. though steve harrington is now your boyfriend, not all of the change has been good. jonathan is gone, dustin is pulling away, the party is divided, and max's sunken eyes remind you of her brother's. all the change threatens to suffocate you. then one phone call, multiple dead bodies, and a song from your past changes everything you thought you once knew. time has never been your friend, especially when it reopens old wounds. (which only complicates things between you and steve). (and the upside down makes everything worse). (as usual).
episode one - the hellfire club: el writes to you as if youre her husband away at war, you debate the intricate nature of liking boobies with robin and steve, lucas is your beloved while eddie munson is your sworn enemy, steve accidentally exposes your (horribly hidden) daddy issues, dustin is an angsty teen, and jonathan really loves to drop emotional bombshells on you. can you believe this all happens in one day ? lol cheers to senior year !
episode two - vecnas curse: you and billy play marco polo, max interrupts a saturday morning breakfast at the henderson household, robin crushes steves dream of becoming a 1950s housewife, reefer rick has an odd taste in movies, boathouses are creepy in the dark, and eddie munson likes it when you pull his hair.
episode three - the monster and the superhero: you and steve can never have a normal conversation, dustin threatens nasa, eddie sadly eats his cereal because youre mean to him, youre once again nancys biggest fan, dustin and steve have an awkward heart to heart, and you and max become felons together and trauma bond (again) !

When Robin first met Steve, she thought he was all arrogance and confidence, thought he was bullshit.
She got to know him, looked behind the picture of King Steve, the fallen jock of Hawkins High. She likes Steve. Loves him like a brother sometimes.
She's surprised though that he's so oblivious sometimes. That guy dated half of the school, okay, all of them girls, even though she knows that Steve Harrington's virginity will forever be Tommy Hagan's greatest steal, but how can Steve be so blind?
Steve's face is flushed when he finds her after the last period, when they are supposed to spend the rainy afternoon on the couch, watching Disney movies or whatever.
"I think Billy is theatening me!" Steve says, eyes huge. Like always when he's talking about Billy. Which he does a lot. Most of the day.
Because they are rivals, he says.
Because he's got a big fat crush, Robin has inferred after the last "Billy Hargrove is disgusting" ramble Steve annoyed her with for two hours.
She suppresses a grin that wants to mix with a sigh which leads to a weird hiccup.
"What's going on?"
"He sent me notes today. This one says 'I'm watching you, pretty boy.'" Steve waves a piece of paper in front of her. Billy's handwriting is surprisingly neat.
That's not really a surprise. Billy stares at Steve as if he's an oasis in the desert. Steve stares at Billy like he's a cake and there's only one piece left.
There's her hiccup again.
" … and the other?" she asks. It's amusing, she has to admit. At the same time she wants to smush them together like the Barbie dolls she had played with as a child. She created epic love stories - lacking Ken the whole time, because a Barbie deserved another Barbie, not some boring ass dude.
Steve ruffles his hair. "It’s even worse. It says 'I'm waiting for you in the parking lot!'"
Robin snorts. That's it. She's glad Billy apparently had gotten around to the realization that it's not a rivalry but the exact opposite. Of course Billy Hargrove can't just say "I like you". That would be too easy.
"I think you're both idiots," she hiccups. Damn, that's getting out of hand.
Steve puts his hands in his hips. "What?" he asks.
"Go to the parking lot!" Robin points at the door.
"I don't wanna fight," Steve begins.
Robin can't stand this hiccup any longer.
"He doesn't want to fight - he wants to fuck," she almost yells.
Steve gapes at her.
"Maybe it's a joke," he manages.
"What if it isn't?" she asks.
Steve's moles drown in the pinkness of his cheeks.
"I… should go," he says. "Thanks, Robin."
"Welcome, dingus."
She shouldn’t follow him, but she still does, because he’s a bit of an idiot and she loves him. She wants to make sure, she isn’t wrong. She peeks around the corner. It's still raining a bit, more a drizzle than anything.
Billy is wearing his tightest pair of jeans. He's leaning against the Camaro, sucking on a cigarette. Pretending he isn't soaking wet. It's almost adorable.
"Harrington, I bet your lame ass still hasn't seen Terminator, " he says, stroking a wet curl out of his dace.
"You don't know that," Steve grumbles.
Billy tilts his head. His face flushes a bit, too. They are matching tones of pink.
"'M drivin'," Billy mumbles.
Steve grins. "I'm buying, then."
Billy nearly drops his cigarette.
"Cool," he says, face still red.
She watches them drive off, high-fiving a very confused Jonathan Byers who just happens to walk to his car.
Her hiccup is gone. Finally.

Steve would have been very happy with the amount of attention that Billy Hargrove was paying to him if he had a single fucking clue what Hargrove’s game was.
He was old news. A has been. Really the only reason Steve got invited anywhere was out of some communal nostalgia senior year seemed to spark for times gone by.
Still, he took what he could get. And what he could get seemed to be Hargrove lingering over his shoulders in corridors, hands firm and warm on the nape of his neck. Whispering things to him that could be playful threats or propositions in equal measure.
Steve wondered where the line of teasing stopped and overt gayness began with the way Hargrove treated him.
It was probably nothing, even if it set Steve’s skin ablaze. It had been nothing with Jonathan. The Hargrove situation hadn’t shown signs of being any different.
Sometimes they’d share a single pack of Marlboros in freezing, soaking wet town enclaves. Steve watching the way Billy’s chest moved under his Queens of the Stone Age t shirt, the spark of the burning cigarette between his lips, the way his blond curly hair stuck to a neck tattoo Steve couldn’t quite make out.
He was pretty quiet one on one. Evidently well read, judging by the hardback copy of Wuthering Heights he lugged around in his bag every day. Sarcastic Pretentious as all hell. So beautiful it was hard to directly look at him. Like the statues which overlooked his grandmother’s orthodox Ukrainian church.
They made stupid bets sometimes, influenced by something from Munson’s endless supply of drugs. That was how Steve ended up with a lip piercing, stupid as it looked. Hargrove still insisted he looked “hot as fuck” though. Which was nice of him.
That was how he found out about Neil. A bet. Scaling to the top of the Mayors house or spill your guts. Billy had been looking strong until the telltale sirens of Hawkins Police became audible in the distance. Then he ran. Police could never find him. The consequences would be life threatening.
Steve couldn’t imagine his dad doing anything more than clipping him around the ear if he got in trouble with the police. Certainly not anything involving a belt. Not his dad who’d struggled through English at the dinner table so that Steve wouldn’t be the one kid speaking Polish at kindergarten.
A mutual understanding blossomed after that but Steve was still no clearer to figuring Billy out. Steve was now very aware that Billy was gay and all the girls he brought home was a sham but the way Billy would treat him in public didn’t seem worth potentially outing himself to Neil, all over some dumb joke rivalry. He’d started painting Billy, hoping that a flurry of artistic passion would burn through this crush. Unfortunately, there was no such luck.
Steve’s therapist told him he needed to communicate, as if that was so fucking easy. The guy who needed a therapist to articulate the feelings his autism regularly obscured or muddled up would totally be able to declare his undying affections to a very confusing 18 year old.
The paintings started to outnumber the amount of available wall or floor Steve had by graduation, which Steve scraped by thanks to several disability specialists. He watched Legally Blonde every day for a week and considered becoming a monk.
Instead, Scoops Ahoy was dumped into his lap and he got to spend his days scooping fucking ice cream, instead of living the life of a tragic and aesthetic tumblr blog, like he’d briefly dreamed at 14. Every girl he tried to flirt with told him that he looked like a “demon twink” and Billy insisted on parading around in his red lifeguard shorts and sunglasses in the mall, generally being the bane of Steve’s existence.
They still talked occasionally, despite Billy’s filled to the brim social and academic life. Billy was either frustrated or depressed most of the time, tattoos now completely covering his arms and chest with an equal amount of piercings, which Steve did not stare at in the slightest.
And he was getting out. He was finally taking himself and his car (possibly Max too if the situation called for it) and going back to California. Back home. Steve smiled for him, even though it felt painfully fake considering his own sad excuse for a future.
Neil ran in July. Some old criminal charges from the late 80s had caught up to him and now he was in either Alabama or Texas depending on who you believed. Billy was absolutely jubilant, came out publicly only a week later and quickly intensified his plans to move, now that he knew his sister was safe.
Steve found himself wondering if he’d find some boy in California. Someone who was perfect but also ordinary and could keep up with Billy’s rapidly moving brain. He hoped they’d be very happy together.
Billy asking him to join threw Steve through a minor curveball. This was because A) everything needed to be planned in Steve’s head and he really struggled with spontaneity and B) he wasn’t much feeling like third wheeling when they got to California.
Steve told him this and Billy stared at him like he’d grown a second and third head. He lapped the Camaro twice before sitting back on the hood next to Steve and asking why in the hell he thought Billy was asking.
Steve weakly responded with “because we’re bros?”
And Billy rolled his eyes so hard Steve briefly thought they might fall out of his skull and kissed him. Which was unexpected. But also incredibly sexy. Then Billy broke away and asked if that was answer enough.
Yeah, that seemed sufficient.
Steve was going to California.
And those paintings were never going to see the light of day.
For @bigdumbbambieyes tysm for being wonderful

S5 predictions
-At the final episode, the party goes back to the local village with three waterfalls and mileven marry while Will watches sadly (if he’s even alive, perhaps he died fighting Vecna)
-Max comes back to life, but she comes back wrong. Her limbs have been replaced by robot parts by doctors and she’s now a cyborg
-Lucas jokes about her being C-3PO from Star Wars. Max shoots him with her laser arm and he dies
-Dustin starts wearing lipstick and it’s just never acknowledged. It’s red. Very red. Too red.
-Turns out Henry is possessed with an evil spirit sent by the Christian devil because his parents never loved him, and during the final fight El looks at him in the eye and says “hey🥺 this isn’t you🥺” and they hug and he becomes Henry again and he’s the best man at the mileven wedding
-Steve gets his ass beat, again
-Robin falls head over heels for Jonathan, who cheats on Nancy with her. Nancy is so mad than she grabs one of her guns and shoots them both
-Eddie comes back to life but he only speaks French now
-Will develops a crush on Steve and they are endgame
-Robin begins growing pumpkins
-Also Joyce and Robin kiss
-When hopper finds out he’s so mad he handcuffs Robin and refuses to leave her hands free, so she spends half a season completely free and in liberty but handcuffed
-Lucas’ ghost comes back to haunt the party after max killed him but not in a scary way. Neither a sad way. He’s just an inconvenience. He moves papers and cups to other places, he opens the door while Dustin is showering, he tugs at mike’s hair. He doesn’t do anything to Will tho and this pisses everyone off cause that’s just not fair.
-El is actually Henry’s daughter, el’s mom and him hooked up while he was in the lab.
-El grows her hair out and dyes it pink
-Mike grows a mustache
-Will hits the gym and gets jacked
-Max steals Robin’s pumpkins at night to leave them in mike’s room. Mike is so confused each morning, there’s always a new pumpkin.
-El and Steve share an emotional moment with an almost kiss but they are interrupted by Will
-Suzie is Russian and has been on it all along
-Argyle appears during the first episode and he’s driving the van. He’s supposed to drive Jonathan and will somewhere but before he arrives at their house a truck hits him and he goes flying and dies
-Will, despite being endgame with Steve, objects at the mileven wedding, and Nancy just shots him and they continue the wedding like nothing happened
-Robin and Steve get a new job at the arcade. They are eventually fired because they spend their shifts playing, and they are so bad but they keep playing anyway, and eventually they lose all their money and end up with 20k dollars in debt. A s5 subplot is them trying to break into the arcade at night and steal their money back from inside the machines. They fail
-Mr Clarke appears and has an affair with hopper
-Holly gets taken to the upside down cause she doesn’t know how to ride a bike yet, so she just goes walking through the forest and Vecna sees her and just snatches her.
-Surprise surprise, Karen knows how to use a gun and she’s the one to kill the evil spirit possessing Henry by shooting it
-Billy appears and Steve and him have some very homoerotic wrestling before El kills him just because. He was alive for 15 minutes. Also during all this he was a zombie
-Max’s mom actually works for the lab and was brenner’s ex
-The last scene of the whole show is Ted wheeler waking up on his armchair, having dreamt all the story

Eddie Munson’s Guide for How to Adopt a Jock in Four Easy Steps (3/5)
Part One
Part Two
Part Four
AO3 Link
A.N.- shorter chapter today, but the next two chapters make up more than half of the rest of my google doc! So I promise that it’s worth it, lol. Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Eddie, I’m going to need you to repeat what you just told me, because I know for a fact that I didn’t hear you correctly. I couldn’t have.” Grant crossed his arms angrily, leveling Eddie with his best intimidating glare.
“I know it sounds crazy, but I need you to trust me on this. Steve is… fuck man, he’s not in a good place, okay? So yeah, he’s sleeping in the Hellfire room right now. Before you come for my throat, I need you to think about this.” Eddie held out his hands, counting on his fingers as he went through his reasoning. “His parents haven’t been home in three months. Hagan abandoned him last year, Nancy broke up with him then hooked up with Jonathan Byers, Billy beat the shit out of him this weekend, he isn’t sleeping, he has no one. He’s an outcast, just like the rest of us.”
“So this is the perfect opportunity to get back at him.” Gareth muttered under his breath, crossing his arms.
Eddie turned to the youngest member of their party, raising an eyebrow. “I know that his type like to pick on you Freshmen, but that’s not how we do things here, Gar-bear.” Eddie sighed then, pinching the bridge of his nose. “It’s easy to get back at people in times like this, but that would make us no better than them.” Eddie turned back to the entire group then, shaking his head at the three of them. “You guys didn’t see him. It was bad… I mean, if I’m being honest, it was a little scary.”
“So what are you proposing?” Jeff finally spoke, looking up from where he was previously staring at the linoleum floor of the hallway outside the drama room.
“Just let him sit next to me and watch the game today. Be civil. Don’t tease him, don’t make snide comments- just don’t be assholes. If things go well after today we’ll talk about bringing him in permanently.”
“Permanently?!”
“Eddie, I mean this when I say it, you are certifiably insane.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
“Shut up!” Eddie shrieked and held his hands up, effectively quieting the uproar from his group of misfits. “Just- look, if you fuck this up I’ll TPK this whole campaign- which, honestly, is probably more of a punishment for me because I’ve been working on this campaign for about a month, but I digress. Give. The guy. A chance.”
Grant, Gareth, and Jeff looked at one another. They always seemed to be able to have a conversation without speaking (and that conversation usually was centered around some shit Eddie was pulling). Finally, Jeff nodded at Eddie. “Alright, we’ll give him a chance. BUT only on the condition that each of our characters starts with a rare magic item.”
Eddie huffed out a quiet laugh, nodding at the three boys. “Yeah, sure, whatever. I’ll add them to your character sheets before we start.”
Jeff blinked in surprise and looked at both Gareth and Grant, then back at Eddie. “Even though the magic items may not make sense with your campaign?”
“You’re the ones asking for ‘em.” Eddie shrugged, then pulled the lanyard out of his pocket. “Okay, just gimme like, ten minutes, then you can come in.” As Eddie walked away, he could’ve sworn he heard the boys whispering about a giant crush and him being head over heels. Eddie scoffed to himself. He could never fall for Steve- what with Steve’s stupid big eyes and his floppy hair and his dorky polos. Eddie unlocked the door, rolling his eyes as he did. Him falling for Steve. As if.
Steve sat up from his space in the corner when the door opened, instantly relaxing when he saw who it was. The jock rubbed at his eyes, humming sleepily. “Hey Eds. S’it time for Hellfire ‘lready?”
Steve’s hair was a mess, his polo was sideways, his eyes were tired and a blanket was hunched around his shoulders. He was… actually kind of adorable. Eddie smiled at him and could’ve sworn he felt a flutter in his chest.
Oh no.
Oh no no no.
He had a crush on Steve Harrington.
...Shit.
It’s bordering on two weeks since Hargrove’s arrival at Hawkins High, when Steve realizes he’s crushing on the guy. Like—‘doodling hearts in the margins of his books and racking up a list of things he likes about him’ type crushing.
They’ve barely interacted after that night at the party. Outside of social gatherings, they just run in different circles; Steve, filling his time with Robin and occasionally third-wheeling Nancy and Jonathan, while Billy hangs out with the more popular crowd.
Their schedules also don’t overlap despite the blonde taking a number of senior-level classes, with the exception of gym and lunch.
The list though, is still so painstakingly long. Ego-stroking-ly lengthy. Embarrassingly indulgent, all on his behalf.
Steve would much rather nosedive into the quarry, than divulge too deeply into it with anyone.
Especially around or to the guy’s actual face, at the risk of Billy’s head becoming too big for his body (even though Steve thinks he’d make an adorable bobble head). Or you know, worse— like him, getting absolutely brained in front of everyone.
Which must say a lot about him as a person because apparently, this is his type. Beautiful, angry, conceited boys.
Regardless, there are some objective mentions on his list though.
Things that the general public would agree on, like Billy’s Michelle-Pfeiffer curls; loose and wavy but so, so golden.
His eyes are a close second, of course because Steve’s seen a lot of bright blues but Billy’s remind him of the vacation he’d spent in Aruba, as a kid. Remind him of a horizon-kissed vastness and warm water lapping at his ankles on a private beach.
The public also agrees that Billy’s got a banging body. He’s thicker than most because he actually gives a shit and ‘works out religiously’ but it’s not all muscle. His abdomen and thighs are firm but his pecs and ass have the right amount of give. A perfect amount of softness.
Steve would know because he’s had to will away many boners at the sight of them.
And Billy’s funny in a witty, sarcastic way. He grins toosharptooprettytoobright and dangerous. He’s smart too, like taking mostly AP classes smart and he’s smug about it all because he knows he’s hot shit. Of course, the bastard is self aware. Cocky. Steve likes him so much. Wants him so bad that it’s dizzying, sickening.
So yeah, there’s stuff that everyone can agree on but then….then, there’s whatever this is.
This being the two penny-sized indents at the base of Billy’s spine. Symmetrical and just defined enough for average eye to discern.
When Steve sees them for the first time though, he promptly drops the basketball in his hands. In front of everyone. During fucking gym class. Purely out of shock.
He catches himself within the same breath and quickly looks away.
Swallows.
Ignores the pointed look that Patrick sends him for flaking out, mid-pass, like some kind of freak and looks around cooly.
Because Billy Hargrove has dimples of venus.
Affectionately dubbed a sign of beauty by Michelangelo. Famed after the Greek goddess’ simulacrum. Called dimples of Apollo on men, which suits Billy all the more, in Steve’s opinion.
The sun child.
Flushed with life. Deserving of avid worshippers. A being deserving of wax poetic. Glittering, dazzling, vibrant and the Camaro, his chariot.
And he knows this because dimples are like, his freckles. His glasses. His braces. They’re a niche, little thing that he finds just devastating. Achingly cute. Nancy has a pair of them near her laugh lines that he would kiss everyday and prod at, endeared.
So he ambles on through practise a little out of breath and red in the face with his newfound knowledge.
Watches Billy jog over to the locker room with everyone else at the end; skin slick and sweat pooling at the divots of his waistband. Tempting.
He stands back and feigns trying to catch his breath, his hands on his knees. Eyes the younger boy’s retreating form from up through his hair. Imagines hooking his thumbs into the depressions of his flesh.
Relishes in the thought of splaying his hands across the width of his waist.
Feels his mouth go dry and a rush of white heat surging south.
Licks his lips absentmindedly as his cock aches to life and makes the decision to skip the locker room schtick, save anyone realizing he’s sporting a half chub.
Instead, he grabs his backpack and heads out to his car. The parking lot is mostly empty by the time he gets there and devoid of anyone interested in him enough to wave him over. He tosses his stuff into the backseat of the Beemer and speeds off before anyone can catch up to him.
It’s a short drive to his house but he spends it envisioning Billy in all sorts of compromising positions. Thinks about the flush on his skin when he plays and the heat in his eyes— wonders how easily he gives in; loud-mouth turned soft and pliant at the faintest hint of pleasure.
He barely makes it inside before shucking his bag off and stripping himself bare of sweat-sticky clothes. In the same breath, he’s fisting a too damp hand around his cock and hissing at the near painful throb. His only relief comes from the coldness of the door against his back as he slumps against it.
Precum beads at the flushed head and he gathers it all on the upstroke to ease the glide. Squeezes his eyes shut so tightly that honeyed galaxies explode behind the lids and he can’t think.
Can’t think about the consequences of jerking off to someone he sees damn near everyday. Doesn’t care enough to avoid the impending embarrassment.
Why would he? Instead, he thinks of Billy laid out beneath him, all pretty and flushed and glittering; his eyes wet with unshed tears and ruddy lower lip between his teeth as he looks over his shoulder at him. Imagines the roughness of his voice and his muscles all pulled taut as Steve knocks the air out of his lungs with each slam of his cock.
He fucks into the tight ‘o’ of his hand, already so goddamn close and conjures up the image of twin dips. Wants to paint pearlescent white across the bronze expanse of Billy’s back; let it pool where he is favored by the Gods.
The thought has him biting back a moan as he grinds into the slickness of his hold. The heat in his gut expands so greatly, so suddenly, that his hips flex with the intensity of it. Until finally,
it snaps.
Like a star beneath the pressures of gravity; with all the strength and ferocity of a supernova. And he’s spilling all over his hand in a few stiff, jerky thrusts and breathing out a low, garbled “Fuck, Billy— shitshitshit.”
And God, he’s so screwed.
It’s Always Been You
Tumblr media
Based on this request
Pairing: Billy Hargrove x Fem! Reader (you + Y/N)
Summary: You come home from college during holidays and to see your friends again. .Reconnecting with the core group that you connected with during the Upside Down trauma. Steve hosts a party for you and you get a little rowdy, Billy has always been there for you; this time something else happens.
TW: cursing and drinking. That’s about it. It’s pretty tame!
A/N: this is my work, I don’t give anyone permission to use it for anything or claim it as their own.
The sound of passing cars lulled you into an easy sleep as you got comfortable in the bus seat. Two more hours and you’d be back in Hawkins with your best friends. The only good thing about that pimple of a city: Nancy, Robin, Steve, Eddie, Jonathan, a bunch of weird kids and of course…Billy. The thought of your high school crush made you smile, you two had stayed in touch when you left for school, but seeing him again was a different level of excitement. He’d joined Hawkins High during your junior year in high school and at first; you despised him. His cocky attitude and the amount of girlfriends he plowed through disgusted you. BUT, he came with Max who became close friends with your best friends brother, then all the Vecna craziness broke out and somehow you got roped into a tight knit friend group with Billy. The real change in your friendship happened after Starcourt.
Pulled from your thoughts, the bus stopped and you could hear yelling at the us stop. Groggily you looked out the window but pure happiness and excitement filled your body as you saw your friends outside with signs, yelling for you. Steve and Robin were making fools of themselves but you ran to them as soon as your feet hit the pavement. Comforting arms wrapped around you and you felt like you could finally relax.
“Welcome home!!!!” Steve grunted out as he squeezed you and moved back and forth. Robin hit your arm playfully.
“That’s for leaving us for your fancy school.” She smiled and hugged you. “This is for coming back to visit.”
Grabbing your bags from the bus, you quickly loaded into Steve’s car and the three of you talked and laughed all the way back to his house. His parents were on some European trip or something so he just had you stay with him. Upon opening the door to his house, you heard a resounding “SURPRISE!” as a smaller body smashed into you. Maxine, she’d ran to you and gave you a tight hug; soon followed by the rest of the kids and then your friends.
“I missed you guys too.” A chuckle escaped your lips as you tried to stay standing from the overwhelming amount of people around you.
“Jesus Christ! Let her put her shit down at least, you are gonna suffocate her.”
There it was. That beautiful voice, you tried to see him, but Some of the guys too tall and blocking your view. Suddenly, you felt someone slip your backpack off and move your bags out of your grip. Strong, tanned arms wrapped around your shoulders and a familiar chin rested on your head. Billy.
“Hello to you too Billy.” You blushed softly, trying to laugh off his nice way of getting everyone off of you. The smell of cigarettes and motor oil filled the air around you. His smile could be felt from the top of your head.
“Welcome back short stack.” He squeezed you gently, then after just a few moments too long, (or not long enough) he let you go and grabbed your bags.
“Harrington! I’m putting her in your parents room!”
He called out to Steve who was grabbing some stuff out of his trunk. Max still hadn’t left your side and she had a brightness to her blue eyes. There was a soft spot in you for her and you wrapped on arm around her shoulder.
“Been keeping everyone in line?” You asked. They’d all went back to setting up stuff like balloons and streamers.
“Of course.” She smiled back. “Come on, Billy and I are staying here and there are some things I want to show you in my room.” The younger red head pulled you away from everyone.
“What’s the big set up for?” You asked as you passed the kitchen with a boat load of food and beer.
“Steve’s throwing a party for you tonight.”
Great. You’d hope to get a little sleep, but your friends were a rowdy bunch. Nancy was known for getting a little too drunk a little too fast; but Jonathan usually kept an eye out for her. Steve, you and Robin usually became the parents as Billy would get hammered and Eddy would get blitzed. You weren’t thrilled at the idea that the kids were gonna be around but Max could sense the hesitation so she spoke up.
“Don’t worry. We’re all going over to Hoppers tonight. El said to say hi, she’s busy with her dad doing super power shit.”
That was good. You relaxed a bit more and followed Max to the guest room.
———
You’d managed to sneak away from everyone and finally you got to your room. It was wonderful to see everyone again, but the silence was needed to prepare for the party. Plopping down on the bed you exhaled and closed your eyes. There was a comfortable nature to Steve’s home, and you’d joked before about how he should open a home for wayward kids; since everyone always found a safe place with him. The thought of Max and Billy staying there too was nice, but it meant Neil was worse than ever. Billy had kept you updated on their lives but he never spoke about Neil unless it was really bad. Last time Billy wrote to you (Which he would never admit to writing you letters, but he did every month) he mentioned moving out and getting his own place…maybe Steve’s place was just a temporary set up.
“You look like shit.”
Opening your eyes you smiled to find baby blue eyes staring down at you. He was being playful, but you still sat up and tried to adjust your hair and outfit.
“I was on a bus for hours, how did you think I was going to look?”
He sat next to you and pulled you back down so you both were laying down. The blush on your cheeks only heated up.
“It’s good to have you back. I can’t stand these idiots.” You laughed, nudging him softly.
“I’m just like those idiots.”
“Not even close.”
There was a comfortable silence that settled between you two. This was a side of Billy that only you got to see, the calm man that lie behind the troubled sea that was his heart. He’d worked on his anger and his friendships but you always saw past his facades.
“You doin’ okay? School and shit going good?” His arm was wrapped around your shoulder and you nuzzled your head into his chest. It was very intimate but you two had moments like this in the past; you both just never addressed it.
“Mmhmm. How’s the shop?” Billy had started work at the town auto shop, and from what she knew of it; he was doing great.
“Good. Finally got a place for Max and I. We’re just crashing here until its ready. It’s not much, a trailer in Eddie’s neighborhood… but it’s mine.”
You sat up and looked at him, a different feeling settling in the air.
“I’m so proud of you Billy.”
A beat passed, then there was a knock at your door.
“Y/N! Are you ready? People are starting to show up! Do you need help with anything?”
Nancy. God Bless her for checking on you because you were about to kiss Billy and you couldn’t ruin that friendship. He rolled his eyes and got up, almost ripping the door off.
“She’s all yours Wheeler.”
Nancy rolled her eyes but came in, as Billy walked out he looked back and winked at you.
————————
Hair done, outfit on and makeup finished. Looking in the mirror you checked to make sure the ripped Band Tee didn’t show too much off, because the black leather shorts were a little too short but Nancy insisted they looked good. She paraded you out into the party and there were A LOT of people. Some just cheering because they were drunk and didn’t care why the party was happening, just that it was. Others you actually knew and you caught up with them a little as drinks and shots were placed in your hand in a revolving order.
Billy was outside, you could hear the keg stand chants, Robin was on the couch with a girl named Vickie, Eddie and Jonathan were probably out getting high and Nancy was circulating. You were, put nicely, smashed. There was no reason to hold back, you weren’t driving, you were in a safe place and your friends were all around.
Standing on a table, with some outside help from a few guys, you yelled over the music.
“Thank yeeew all for comin! LEts PARTY!” Someone cranked up the music and you started dancing on the table, and the cheering got louder than the keg stand cheers. That got Billy’s attention.
He came in to find you, someone who wasn’t too keen on being the center of attention, on a table; dancing like no one was watching. At first he just chuckled and laughed, but the guys who had helped you up were a little too close for his liking. He inched closer, but the moment one of the guys put his hand on your leg, Billy moved. Pushing people out of the way, he got to the table and threw you over his shoulder.
“Awww boo!” You giggled as he carried you up to the room you were staying in.
“Billy!!!! I was having funnnn.” You playfully hit his back before he put you on the bed.
“Oooo kinky!” A giggle left your lips as you took another sip of the beer that didn’t leave your hand even through Billy manhandling you.
“Alright princess, you’ve had enough for tonight.” He took your beer and you pouted.
“Party poooper! This princess wants to keep going!” You reached out for the beer but he stopped you, and the two of you were very close.
“Hi handsOme.” A drunken smile bloomed on your face and the glaze over your eyes began to set in. Yep, totally drunk. Billy just laughed and shook his head, placing a soft kiss on your forehead.
“You’ll thank me tomorrow.” Again, there was something else that settled in the air, but this time you were more confident. Liquid courage and all that fun shit.
“I’m gonna kiss you.” You giggled and got closer. An expression you hadn’t seen crossed Billy’s face and you paused…oh no.
“Oh…oh no I fucked up. Shit!!!” You immediately pulled away and scooted your back against the headboard. Pulling your knees to your chest, you began to rock back and forth. Did you just screw up your best friendship? Did you read all the signs wrong? Was he going to hate you?
“Shit.” Billy groaned and stood up. “Y/N, I would love to kiss you, but not like this. Get some rest baby. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
Baby, that was a new one. You looked up at him worried, but he winked and you relaxed. The room was spinning, maybe rest was a good idea. The loud party didn’t even bother you. Dozing off quickly you didn’t even notice Billy lock the door for your safety on his way out.
————-
Getting hit by a semi carrying other semi’s felt ten thousand times better than the hangover that hit you in the morning. Groaning you pulled yourself into the bathroom, looking in the mirror you shuddered. You also looked like you got hit by a semi. Taking a deep breath you hopped into the shower and tried to wash off the night before.
A soft knock got your attention as you got out. Keeping just your towel on you tried to open the door only to realize it was locked. Unlocking it, you found Billy before you with breakfast.
“God Bless you.” You smiled and took the food. He was quiet, looking at you in a towel. Billy needed to compose himself before speaking, he didn’t expect you to open the door so… freely. What if it was someone who passed out in the living room? That thought pulled him into the room and he shut the door so no one else could see you.
“Here.”
He handed you some ibuprofen and you smiled.
“You are the best Billy. How did you did this every weekend??” Downing the pills with some water he watched you and just chuckled.
“Practice babe.”
That threw you for a little bit of a loop but it sounded familiar.
“What happened last night? I remember talking to Vanessa but it gets a little fuzzy after that.”
Billy grabbed a few poloriads Nancy took out of his back pocket. You went red in the face.
“I WAS TABLE DANCING??” Groaning, you sunk to the floor with your food, nibbling on pancakes as you looked through the photos.
“WHy did anyone let me get on Bruce’s shoulders??” Bruce was your class clown and he apparently piggy backed you around according to Nancy’s photos. Billy scoffed.
“I sure as shit didn’t. You don’t remember anything?” There was a vulnerability to his voice that made you look up at him curiously.
“Oh no, what did I do?”
He sat next to you, resting his head on the edge of the bed. It was obvious he was trying to decide if he should tell you or not.
“You almost kissed me.”
Deer in headlights, that was a good way to explain your expression. Burying your face in your hands, the common symptom of puking while your hungover began to surface.
“Fuck I’m so sorry Billy. I don’t get drunk I didn’t know that’s what I would do. Shit, I’m really sorry.”
For some reason, you felt Billy relax next to you.
“So you don’t get drunk at school?” The image of you dancing on tables away from his protective gaze and you offering to kiss strangers had haunted him the whole night. Of course you could do whatever you wanted, the two of you were just friends, but he didn’t want that.
“Of course not, I don’t feel safe to drink that much at school. I don’t know people there like I do here. I don’t have you to keep me safe.”
You looked at the photo of him carrying you away, he always was there for you. Maybe it was because you helped save his life in Starcourt, or maybe it was because he truly cared about you.
“Why don’t you come back?”
His voice was quiet. That question hit you hard, and you rubbed your forehead.
“Billy it’s not that easy, with school and…”
“No, I know. It was a dumb question. I just…I don’t like you not being here. I need to make sure you’re okay. Phone calls and letters aren’t enough. I…get worried if you don’t answer the phone or if I miss a letter.”
This was a new Billy. He’d been open with you before but never like this. He wasn’t looking at you so you gently put a hand on his face and nudged it to look at you.
“Hey, I’m okay. All that is over with. It’s safe now. I’m okay.”
He closed his eyes and leaned into your touch. You two had playfully gotten close before but this was real and really intimate.
“Billy?”
He opened his eyes and looked at you, but it was for a split second before his lips were on yours. The kiss caught you off guard but after a moment, you returned it. Moving to straddle him you wrapped your arms around his neck while his hands settled on your hips. You lost time in his kiss and it was the safest you’d ever felt.
Finally the two of you separated, when he squeezed your hips softly. Any more and the two of you wouldn’t be able to stop.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time.” He smirked as he rested his forehead on yours.
“Me too.”
“Come on, you need to eat…tell anyone about me being sappy and I’ll break up with you.”
He slightly joked.
“Oh so were dating now?”
You giggled and tried to get off of him, but he didn’t let you go just yet.
“Y/N, I’ve thought of you as my girlfriend ever since the summer before you left. You’re it baby. I don’t need anyone else.”
You kissed him softly, then got off of him.
“I’m yours Billy Hargrove.”
“Good.”
————————————-
The End!
Constructive criticism is welcome! DM’s are open! I hope this was to y’all’s liking! I got a little carried away sorry about that! I almost made it into two parts but I decided against it.
episode two: trick or treat, freak
 “Why do you only ever care about me when I’m some kicked fucking puppy?” Steve’s words are vicious, and you flinch at his tone. “You know that’s not true,” “It’s not?” He scoffs at you. “Then explain what happened this summer.” “I…” You can’t.  Steve sees your reluctance to say anything and lets out a harsh laugh. “Yeah, whatever. Some real fucking friend you were.”
Summary: you and nancy have a bonding session in the library (kinda hot tbh), billy gives jonathan and steve a common cause to unite on: Protect Y/N, you're a chauffeur to a very sad steve harrington, and dustin uses will's trauma to his advantage.
-
The Henderson house is pure chaos morning of Halloween.
Dustin is running around the house, screaming about how his costume has to be absolutely perfect and that if you don’t hurry up with the jack-o-lantern pancakes then he’s going to just leave without eating breakfast. Meanwhile your mother is running after him, straightening his suit and tidying his hair.
“The pancakes are almost done, my god.” You flip the last pancake, but in your rush the jack-o-lantern’s smile turns into more of a grimace, but hey, food is food. You quickly set Dustin’s plate down on the table and practically shove him into the seat.
“Eat.”
“But my proton blaster–”
“Is on the steps, I’ll grab it. Eat, I want pictures with you.” You kiss the top of your brother’s head and then run over to grab his costume’s prop.
“I’m thirteen now, I don’t need my sister doting on me–” Dustin complains, but then his eyes land on the mini Reese’s Pieces you’ve decorated his pancakes with and quickly changes his tone. “Oh! Candies! Yummy!”
You laugh at him and bring his backpack over. The Ghostbusters matching costume idea that boys have planned for today makes you want to just sweep them all into your arms and kiss their tiny little faces. They may be getting older with crushes and angsty feelings, but they’re still the same nerdy little boys you met when you were twelve.
Dustin wolfs down his pancakes and your mom prepares her camera. You woke up earlier than usual this morning specifically so that you could make Dustin’s annual Halloween pancakes and then take pictures of him with his costume on. As soon as he’s done eating, you and your mom whisk him towards the fireplace for pictures.
“Oh, I want to see those pearls!” Your mother squeals as she takes a million pictures of Dustin. When he smiles, she loses her mind. “Yeah! Lovely, I love it!”
You’re just as ecstatic as your mom. “Who you gonna call Dustin?”
“Ghostbusters!” He sings along, holding up his proton blaster with an even wider smile on his face.
It’s a happy morning.
Dustin puts on a show as he poses for your mom, and you even join in for some. Sure, you aren’t in costume, but who knows how many more mornings like these you have left? Dustin is getting older, all the boys are, so you plan on cherishing these mornings for as long as possible.
You and Dustin are giggling as you now stand back to back, him holding his blaster and you holding up finger guns, and your mom is taking multiple final pictures when Jonathan arrives. He knocks on the door before letting himself in. When he sees you and Dustin posing, he starts loudly belting the Ghostbusters song.
“God, bee. At least let my coffee kick in before you subject me to your horrible singing.” You playfully groan, grabbing your own backpack and pancakes to eat on the road.
Jonathan ignores your teasing and ruffles Dustin’s hair. “Nice costume, bud.”
Dustin, seemingly still holding a grudge against the guy after your conversation from last night, slaps his hand away and glares at him. “Don’t mess up the hair.”
Your brother proceeds to stare Jonathan down, gives him an “I’m watching you” gesture, and then walks out the front door without any further words. You, Jonathan, and your mom all stand in the living room in varying states of emotions. You’re trying not to laugh at your brother’s antics, your mom is happily looking at the photos she took, and Jonathan is standing there in complete confusion.
“What was that about?” He asks you, slightly hurt by Dustin’s rebuff.
“Shhh,” you hand him a plate of pancakes and then walk towards the front door. “Let’s get to school, bee.”
–
At school, the mullet guy from yesterday finds you at your locker as soon as Jonathan has walked away. The two of you had been running behind schedule, so you’d told Jonathan to head to first period so at least he’d be on time while you tried to find your history textbook.
As you’re digging through your locker, the mullet guy stalks up behind you.
“I never got your name,” he says with a breathy voice, standing way too close behind you.
You straighten your back, but don’t turn around. You know that if you do, the guy will only get a kick out of having your face close to his. “You never asked.”
“So there’s some sass to you underneath all that sweetness.” His breath hits the back of your neck and you shiver, but in a way that makes you feel dirty and unclean.
“What do you want?” You ask the guy, your fingers wrapping around the textbook that you’ve finally found. If needed, you’re sure it’ll make a handy weapon. It’s only you and the guy in the hallway. Everyone else has holed up in class and you’re now regretting sending Jonathan away. You feel trapped, vulnerable, and you hate it.
Mullet man chuckles deeply, his voice reverberating against your back. “Nothing yet. Just thought I’d introduce myself to such a pretty face.”
You don’t say anything, your fingers only tighten around your textbook. If he gets any closer, you’ll swing.
Though you can’t see him, you can feel his eyes flicker to your textbook and he lets out another cruel laugh. “Loosen up, sweetheart, I won’t hurt ya.” You don’t move, and he seems to get another kick out of this. “My name is Billy. Remember that for me, alright?”
Finally Billy steps away from you and you slowly release all the tension that’s built up within you. You still don’t turn around, he hasn’t left yet, but your hands are shaking a bit and you feel unsteady.
“Would you do me a favor, Billy?” Your voice is steady, there’s no trace of the fear within you.
“I’m listening,” Billy is practically purring and you want to gag at how much his cockiness oozes around you.
You turn, now finally facing him, and slam your textbook against Billy’s chest. “Learn some fucking personal space.”
Billy’s only reaction is a smile, which only makes you more uncomfortable, but you refuse to show him this. Instead, you square your shoulders and walk towards your first class. You’ve dealt with assholes in the past; you’ve known Steve Harrington since you were twelve. But Billy is different.
You’re not sure if you want to find out just how different he is from Steve.
–
Another small highlight of your school year so far has been your study sessions in the library with Nancy resuming. The two of you had drifted apart this summer, you just rarely ever saw the girl in between your hectic work schedule and her dates with Steve, but from the first day of junior she’s helped you with your math equations and you’ve helped her with her english essays.
It’s a good trade off and you’ve enjoyed spending time with the girl. Unlike last year, Jonathan doesn’t join anymore. He can’t be too close with her now that she’s back with Steve. So, it’s just you and her for an hour every day during study hall. It’s nice, if you’re being honest.
Today though there’s something off with Nancy.
She’s been tapping her pencil on the table for the last few minutes. Right before you can politely ask her to stop, the tip of the pencil snaps in half. She sighs. “Shit,”
“There’s a sharpener over by the window,” you point towards the general direction. “Sharpen your pencil before these equations officially end my life.”
Nancy laughs, excusing herself and walks over to the sharpener.
You focus back on your homework, the equations swimming around in your brain. It’s not that you’re necessarily bad at math, but you’re no whiz at it either. You get lost in the practice problems, erasing and re-erasing frequently, and you don’t realize just how long Nancy has been gone until she returns. She sits down, and you’re about to make a horrible joke about how stupid it is to find x, when you notice how shaken Nancy looks.
“Woah, hey.” You set your pencil down and turn your attention to Nancy. “Are you okay? You look upset.”
Nancy looks towards one of the library’s private study rooms and you see Steve’s retreating figure. You gather that something’s happened between them, but it confuses you because they’ve been nothing but lovey dovey ever since they got back together. What could possibly cause strife between them?
“C’mon, you can talk to me. I’m known for my fantastic advice.” You probe again, and this time Nancy lets out a soft chuckle.
“It’s… complicated.”
“Take all the time you need. I’ve been stuck on question five for like, twenty minutes now. Any distractions are welcomed.”
Now Nancy lets out a genuine laugh and you find yourself laughing as well. The storminess behind her eyes from earlier has lessened, she looks more relaxed now. Once she’s done laughing, she takes a deep breath and starts from the beginning. “Steve and I have been having dinner with Barb’s parents.”
When Barb’s name leaves Nancy’s lips, you feel your stomach twist with guilt. Had you known this would be about Barb, you wouldn’t have pestered Nancy so much into speaking. You know how much she misses her best friend still, no one blames her.
“Well that sounds nice,” you try to comfort. “I’m sure they appreciate your company.”
Nancy bites her lip and looks away from you. “They wouldn’t if they knew Steve and I killed Barb.”
Shock washes over you. “Can I ask for some context?”
“Steve and I… When I forced Barb to come to his stupid party with me, we–we left her alone that night. By the pool…” Nancy’s voice cracks, and you grab her hand to encourage her to keep going. “We went upstairs to have sex, and Barb–she didn’t want me to leave her alone but I–I did and–”
You remember the photos Jonathan took last year, specifically the one where Barb had been sitting all by herself along the pool’s edge. Behind her had been a shadowy figure, a monster you soon would learn was from an alternate dimension with an intent to kill.
“You think Barb died because you left her alone to go have sex with Steve.” You finish for Nancy, her tears rendering her unable to say more.
She nods, looking away again as more tears stream down her face. You feel horrible for her, knowing first hand just how cruelly guilt can eat away at someone. Jonathan doesn’t know this, but you still think you’re the reason Will disappeared last year. You were the one who left him alone that night. If you had been there, if you had dropped him off at the Byers’ doorstep, you’re sure that he would’ve never ended up facing the horrors that he did.
As for Nancy, you understand everything she’s feeling and more. It isn’t fair how one simple choice, one moment of selfishness, can lead to such tragedy and pain.
Cautiously, you ask Nancy a question. “Does Steve know about the guilt you feel?”
“He knows, but he doesn’t understand.” Nancy’s voice laces with grief and bitterness. “He found me by the pencil sharpener. There was this girl, she looked so much like Barb and I just… I zoned out. I was stuck there, thinking about her, when he found me.”
“Did he notice you were upset?”
“Of course he noticed. He’s Steve, I could shed a single tear and he’d be all over me like I’m some baby.” Nancy scoffs, which makes you frown. You’re not sure what’s so wrong with that, having someone so attuned to your emotions because they love you that deeply.
You push aside your thoughts, however. “What happened, then?”
“We went into a study room and I snapped.” Nancy’s close to tears again. “I just… I want to tell Barb’s parents what really happened. They’re selling their house, Y/N. They’re selling their own home to afford this private detective who promised them he’d find out what happened to her. What–what kind of person would I be if I let my best friend’s parents go bankrupt for being worried about their only child?”
“Nancy…”
“And Steve, he just… He told me it was a bad idea, that–that our families could get hurt and all that bullshit, but what am I supposed to do? I’m trying to figure something out, to fix this, and Steve just wants to go to some stupid party and pretend everything is okay?” Nancy is almost shouting now, and you nervously look around to make sure you're not disturbing anyone. It’s still a library, after all.
Nancy takes a few seconds to collect herself, to steady her breathing and control her anger. You let her take all the time she needs, and when she seems calm enough, you speak. “I understand where you’re coming from and why you’re upset. What happened to Barb is despicable, but… Well, I also agree with Steve.”
“Y/N–”
“No, okay. Listen for a second,” you pause, trying to figure out exactly how to say what you’re thinking. “I think Steve means well, he doesn’t have a malicious bone in that silly body. The Halloween party can be a good thing for you if you let it, a way to destress. You have to move on, you have to allow yourself to move on.”
Nancy tries to argue some more but you continue. “I understand your guilt better than anyone else, I was the one who lost Will that night. But we all signed those contracts, Nancy. If we told anyone what really happened to Barb… It wouldn’t be fair to everyone who gets hurt, all our family members, because we broke a legal oath. You understand that, right?”
“I understand, but it’s not fucking fair.” Nancy’s eyes have a determination in them that startles you. You’ve always known that she was fierce, but seeing the edge in her eyes almost scares you. She’s angry, more than you’ve ever seen her before.
You sigh. “I know, I wish I could do more, but…”
Nancy nods, understanding that there’s not much else you guys can do. You hate to let her down like this, you know she needs to hear something else, to feel supported, but you don’t know what else to tell her.
Steve’s right in his own way, and so is Nancy.
“Can you at least come to the party tonight?” Nancy softly pleads. “It’s just, I’ll feel more comfortable with you there, like I’m less crazy… I mean, that is if you even want to come and–”
“Of course I’ll come, Nance.” You don’t even hesitate to promise her this, nor do you realize that you’ve just called her “Nance”. It slipped from your tongue naturally, as if solidifying your friendship with the girl. You hate parties and loud crowds, but if Nancy needs you there by her side, to hold her hand and remind her of how brave she is, then you’ll happily do so.
Nancy sinks into her seat, relieved. “Thank you, I owe you one.”
“I’ll hold you to that, you know.”
Nancy throws a piece of paper at you and you dodge it, throwing your pencil at her in retaliation. The two of you break out into a fit of giggles until the librarian eventually snaps at you guys and reminds you to be quiet.
You reluctantly get back to work, and as you’re writing down more complex equations, you notice that there’s still a far off look in Nancy’s eyes. You know that she’s still thinking about Barb, the guilt eating away at her, and you know that the topic is far from settled.
–
Halloween is in full swing the second Jonathan drops you off at home from school. There’s already kids milling around up and down your block in an assortment of costumes, all squealing with joy as they collect their candy.
“Meet you in two hours?” You ask Jonathan as you unbuckle your seatbelt.
“Yeah, but remember that I’m not wearing a costume.”
“C’mon, bee! It’s Halloween, where’s your holiday spirit?”
Jonathan groans. “Nag at me all you want, I’m not dressing up. I will, however, offer to be your arm candy.”
“That’s the spirit!” You kiss Jonathan’s cheek and run out of the car and straight into your house. You have two hours to wrap up goodie bags for the neighborhood kids and then get dressed in your costume. It’ll be a tight schedule, but luckily you’re off of work tonight.
It takes you about an hour to assort all your gift bags, separating the boys’ bags from the local kids’ bags, and before you know it you’ve successfully hand packaged goodie bags for an entire army. Once you’re done, you run to your room and throw on your costume. The dress slips over your head and settles gently over you.
You stand in front of your mirror and smile.
It’s perfect.
You’re going as Princess Buttercup tonight for Halloween. You read the Princess Bride around the end of summer and quickly fell in love with Buttercup. You’re not sure if you fell in love with the character because you read the book right after pushing Steve away, or because you saw yourself in Buttercup, but you came to adore her.
Buttercup may have been a bit ditzy, but she loved with everything within her, and with such a passion, that you couldn’t help but admire her. It was her love for others that ultimately drove the story further, and you think there’s something beautiful about that.
The red dress fits perfectly around you and you grab the gold chain that will serve as your belt. Once you’ve secured it around yourself, you place Buttercup’s golden circlet around your head. The costume had been pricier than you would’ve preferred, but as you stand in front of the mirror, you truly do feel like a princess.
Your bee necklace, a wonderful gift from Jonathan, catches light from your window and you smile, bringing your fingers up to the pendant. It’s the only jewelry you need.
“Y/N! Are you almost done? Will radioed that they’d be here soon.” Dustin pounds on your door.
You fling the door open. “I’m done, I just need to put on some makeup.”
Your brother makes a face as he walks into your room and plops himself down onto the beanbag. “You own makeup?”
“Yes, dear brother. I’d wear it more often if I had the time, but between herding you around and my school assignments, I can’t.” You dig through your makeup bag, opting for just mascara and a shimmery pearl eyeshadow. You’ll put on your lipstick in the car to save some time.
“This doesn’t have anything to do with Jonathan, does it?”
You roll your eyes at Dustin. “No, believe it or not I can choose to do things without the influence of others.”
“Hmm, alright. Hurry up though, Mike had this awesome plan to hit up every house with the big candy bars and–”
“Dustin!” You throw a pillow at the boy, shutting him up. “Shush so I can focus.”
He grumbles but remains silent, now watching as you put your makeup on. It’s been a while since you’ve last worn any, so you’re slower than usual. Just as you’re finishing up your mascara, a car honks outside.
Dustin runs out the room and you quickly grab your lipstick and follow after him. You’re wearing your mother’s mary janes again and they pinch your feet as you run, but whatever. You feel pretty tonight, you’re somebody else for now, a princess free from any burdens and stress.
Jonathan is standing outside his car, waiting for you, and when you see him you practically fling yourself in his arms. “You dressed as Westley!”
He spins you around a bit, his plastic sword hitting against his leg. “You wanted me to wear a costume, right?”
You nod, inspecting his costume with glee. He looks amazing, dressed in Westley’s iconic all black attire, his sword by his side, and a mask tied loosely around his neck. To anyone else, Jonathan would look like a regular guy with an affinity for black, but to you, he was dressed as your knight in shining armor.
He’s the Westley to your Princess Buttercup.
Jonathan kisses your knuckles. “Well then, as you wish.”
His words are smooth velvet against your skin, they warm you as the late October air encases you. As you wish, words that became their own I love you within the book. A promise, similar to the one Jonathan made you last year in the passenger seat of his car, pinkies intertwined.
Something stirs within you, seeing Jonathan’s proud smirk on his face because he’s once again managed to surprise you, and the feeling is sickly sweet like syrup. It runs through you slowly, covering every inch of you, and you bask in it.
For now, he’s still yours.
“Can we go now? You guys are gross.” Dustin calls from the car, annoyed.
You and Jonathan spring apart in embarrassment. He laughs, rubs the back of his neck, and tells you, “You look beautiful, Y/N.”
“Why thank you,” you curtsy. “You look rather dashing yourself, good sir.”
“I wasn’t kidding. You look… you’re beautiful.” The sincerity in Jonathan’s voice cuts through you, it cuts through everything between you, and you can only smile.
“Thanks, bee.” You try to keep your voice playful, light and airy as always. “Now, open my door like the brave hero you’re dressed as.”
Jonathan opens your door with a bow, causing you to laugh. You’re sitting in the backseat with Dustin, Will is in the passenger seat, and once you’ve buckled up, Will spins around in his seat to talk to you as Jonathan starts the car.
“Do you think it’s lame that you and Jonathan trick-or-treat with us?
You blink. “What did I miss?”
“I think it’s kinda lame,” Dustin voices next to you, but he lets out a pained squeak after you’ve elbowed his ribs.
Jonathan turns onto the main road and scoffs at the boys. “You think we’re lame?”
“No, but…” Will sinks into his seat, and you watch as he begins to fiddle with the strap of his bag. He’s nervous. “It’s not like Nancy’s coming to watch over Mike, you know?”
Jonathan’s silent, and you catch his eye in the rear view mirror. You know what he’s thinking: Will has been having even more problems in school, he’s sick of being babied, and yet here you guys are, babying him.
You sigh. “Look, Will. We like trick-or-treating with you guys, we don’t go are your babysitters. We go because it’s fun and I get to enjoy free candy as a sixteen year old.”
Will looks out the window and doesn’t acknowledge what you’ve said. You sigh again, knowing that nothing will appease him. He’s only allowed you to see a small portion of how much he’s struggled this year, but you can see his foundations crumbling.
How is he expected to adapt if you and everyone around him refuse to let him do so?
You catch Jonathan’s eye again in the rear view mirror and he seems to be thinking the same thing.
Mike and Lucas run out the Wheeler’s house as soon as you guys park in the driveway. Dustin immediately bolts out the door to greet them, obviously uncomfortable with all the tension, leaving you and Jonathan with Will.
Jonathan looks at you one last time and you nod your head in encouragement. He has to do this, he has to let Will grow on his own.
“Hey, listen.” Jonathan says, stopping Will from leaving. “If I let you go on your own, you promise to stay in the neighborhood?”
Will’s face lights up. “Yeah! Yeah, totally.”
“And be back at Mike’s by 9:00.”
“9:30?”
You reach over and pat Will’s back. “Now you’re pushin’ it, buddy.”
“What Y/N said. Be back by 9:00.” Jonathan instructs, but there’s a fond smile on his face. “Deal?”
“Deal!”
The brothers shake on it and you watch them with a smile. Jonathan hands Will one of Bob’s cameras and makes a poor Dracula joke and you love these boys so much. You wave goodbye to Will as he quickly gets out of the car and runs over to his friends. There’s a new skip in his step, he’s happier than you’ve seen him in a while.
“Alright,” you crawl over the passenger seat and plop yourself in rather ungracefully. “I’d say that went well.”
“We made the right choice, right?”
“I hope so.”
Jonathan sighs and watches the kids, who have now started hitting each other with their candy bags. You flip down the windscreen and use the small mirror in it to apply your lipstick. When Jonathan sees what you’re doing, he does a double take.
“Wait, are you putting on lipstick?”
“Mhm,” you knit your brows together, focused. “We’re going to a party.”
“We are?”
“Nancy begged me to come, and we just left the boys to go trick-or-treating on their own, so what else are we supposed to do tonight?”
“Nancy begged you to come–”
You finish your lipstick and flick Jonathan’s nose to shut him up. “Stop asking so many questions and just start the car, doofus.”
–
The Halloween party is in full swing by the time you and Jonathan arrive. There’s a bunch of drunk teens in an array of costumes, ranging from classic heroes to dumb movie references, and the music is so loud you could hear it while you were still five blocks away.
Jonathan parks the car and looks around wearily. “Are we really doing this?”
“Unfortunately I hate disappointing people, so yeah. We are.”
“One day your people pleasing needs will get you in trouble.”
“I will stab you with your plastic sword.”
“So sweet to me,” Jonathan quips, which you roll your eyes at.
As you’re walking to the front door, you hear a crowd chanting Billy’s name. You freeze, knowing it could only be that awful mullet guy from earlier, and quickly shove Jonathan inside the house.
“Who’s Billy?” He asks, confused.
You shake your head. “Don’t worry about it, let’s try to find Nancy–”
“Nice costume.” A girl dressed in goth attire interrupts you, her eyes only on Jonathan.
Oh great. Another girl interested in Jonathan.
Jonathan looks between you and the girl. “Huh?”
“Nice costume. Going as a goth with a sword?”
“Actually,” you step in front of Jonathan now, forcing the girl to acknowledge your presence. “We’re matching. He’s Westley, I’m Princess Buttercup. Do you like it?”
The goth girl rolls her eyes. “Yeah, totally.” She steps past you and faces Jonathan again. “I’m Samantha.”
Jonathan is again looking between you and the girl, this time with even more fear and confusion on his face, and you almost want to laugh at him in pity. He’s never had a girl so blatantly hit on him, it’s almost hilarious if you ignore the fact that you’re in love with him.
You leave Jonathan to handle the situation himself, scanning the room for Nancy. When you finally spot her, your heart sinks. She’s dancing with Steve, who looks fucking criminally good in his costume. You’re not sure who he’s dressed as, but he puts his Raybans in his mouth and smirks at Nancy and suddenly you understand why so many girls whisper in the halls about his lips.
Nancy looks even better, her white blouse accentuating her beauty even more. She’s dancing with her arms around Steve and now you suddenly really want a drink. Seems like they’ve made up, then.
Right as you’re about to pull Jonathan away from that Samantha girl and call it quits for the night, defeated and pride wounded, you see Steve and Nancy begin to argue over by the punchbowl.
Shit.
You head towards them, shoving past hoards of people who seem to refuse to move. Nancy sees you approaching and only seems to become more upset. Her movement is unsteady, her eyes droopy and glossed over, and even before you walk up to her you know she’s heavily drunk. She’s in a tug of war with Steve and a cup. It’s clear he’s trying to cut off her alcohol intake.
“Hey, Nancy is everything okay–” Your words are cut off as punch splashes all over her white blouse.
Everyone around the couple gasps, and you wince at all the attention. Everyone stares between you, Steve, and Nancy. You quickly find some napkins and begin blotting at her blouse, trying to get as much of the punch out of it, but she drunkenly bats you away.
“Don’t need help,” she slurs, but you shush her.
“I got it, why don’t we go get some water?”
Steve steps in front of you now, aware of the fact that everyone is still staring, and says his first words to you in months. “She’s my girlfriend, I’ll take care of her. Just… just go, Y/N.”
He dismisses you with a wave and you feel hurt wash over you. He hadn’t even spared you a single glance, he just treated you like some annoying fly in his way. You watch, defeated, as Steve guides Nancy to a room and you’re left alone at a party you hadn’t even wanted to go to in the first place.
How fun.
You crumble up one of the napkins in your hand and will away your anger. You don’t deserve to feel angry at Steve’s actions, you’re the one who was so dismissive of him in the first place. He’s just following along, doing what you’ve forced him to do.
As you’re lost in thought, Billy corners you in the kitchen.
“We meet again, sweetheart.” His breath reeks of alcohol and you cringe, the smell burning your nose.
“Didn’t I tell you to learn some goddamn personal space?”
Billy laughs dryly, stepping forward every time you take a step back. Too late, you realize what he’s doing. Before you can stop it, he has your back pressed against a nearby wall. “Now where’s the fun in that?”
You look around, but everyone who had been in the kitchen earlier seems to have left or are far too drunk to realize what’s happening. Billy is peering over you and every part of you wants to run away, to cower. You’ve never been able to handle aggressive men well, no matter how much of a front you put on around Lonnie, you always trembled when he was near.
Billy is no different, and he sees your unease. “Aw, is the princess nervous?”
“I’m surprised Max taught you what a princess looks like.”
At the mention of Max’s name, Billy’s cocky grin slips. Confusion masks his face now, making him appear more human than obnoxiously handsome. “So you know my little sister?”
You try to shove past him, but Billy plants his feet down and places both arms against the wall, trapping you. He’s surrounded you, he wants a reaction out of you. Taking a deep breath, you force yourself to steady your heartbeat and appear indifferent.
“I have my ways,” you shrug, but your heartbeat still pounds rapidly.
Billy raises an eyebrow. “Pretty and intelligent. Why, look at you. I’m impressed, and yet I still don’t know your name.”
You try again to move, but Billy leans his head down and brings his lips to your ear to whisper, “I’ll beg for it, if you want me to.”
“Get off–” He’s too close. He’s too fucking close and his lips against your ear makes you want to throw up, you don’t like this and you feel so fucking pathetic being cornered by such an egotistical asshole.
“Tell me your name, and I’ll go.” There’s a smile in Billy’s voice, you can hear it without even having to look, and it enrages you. You fucking hate men like him.
“Just get the fuck off of me–” You’ve closed your eyes now as you shove harshly against his chest.
Suddenly there’s a thud, a loud “oomph”, and a collective gasp from onlookers at the party. Your hands meet the air, there’s now no one there to push against. Slowly, open your eyes. There, standing in front of you, is Steve holding a very angry Jonathan back while Billy is on the ground.
Jonathan yanks his arm free from Steve and stands over Billy, who is laying on the ground with yet another unnerving smile on his face. Your friend shakes his fist out, which you now see is red, Billy’s face showcases a matching mark. “She told you to get off of her.”
A silence falls over the crowd.
Billy slowly stands up, wipes himself off, and then takes a bow. “Not bad, loner boy.”
Jonathan tries to step closer to him, but Steve grabs his shirt and shakes his head. “He’s not worth it, man.”
“And what do you know about worth, Harrington?” Billy chuckles, now practically in Steve’s face. “Where’s that little girlfriend of yours? You should go ask her what she thinks you’re worth.”
Steve’s face hardens, but you can see dried tears in his eyes. Seeing him about to crumble, you step between the boys. “Enough.”
They look at you, but you ignore them and then wave to the crowd of people still watching. “Show’s over! Go back to drinking away your sorry fucking lives.”
Jonathan pulls you close to him. “Bug, are you okay? Did he hurt you? We need to go home, I’ll bake you brownies and we can just–”
Jonathan’s concerned rambling is enough to make you smile, albeit faintly. “I’m fine, bee.”
Billy observes the interaction, he notices how Steve’s eyes flicker between your interlocked hands with Jonathan and the way your hair frames your pretty face. He sees it all, and he understands exactly what’s happening here.
“Oh, Harrington.” Billy can’t wait to see what happens next. “You’re fucked.”
Steve watches as Billy leaves, confused by his words but too tired to think much of them. He’s had the worst fucking night of his life. His girlfriend just told him she doesn’t love him, then he came outside to see Billy pressing himself against you like some fucking creep. He hadn’t even gotten to help you, Jonathan had beaten him to it. All Steve could do was hold the guy back afterwards.
Now Jonathan is holding your hands and whispering comforting words to you and you’re dressed in Steve’s favorite color, your lips an even prettier red, you’re wearing a goddamn tiara on your head like the princess you truly are, and Steve’s had just about enough of tonight.
“I’m glad you’re okay, Y/N.” Steve tells you tiredly. He then turns to Jonathan. “Uh, Nance and I sorta… Can you just, give her a ride home? She doesn’t…”
Steve’s words catch in his throat and you grab his hand before you can stop yourself. “He’ll take her, won’t you, Jonathan?”
Jonathan stumbles over his words. “Sure, uh. Yeah, I can do that… What about you, though?”
You think about your conversation with Nancy earlier, how she seemed so upset with Steve, and how not even ten minutes ago they’d been fighting over by the punchbowl. There’s a hurt between them, one you think may be too big to patch up with just one conversation, but Jonathan doesn’t know all of this.
“I’ll drive Steve home.”
Both boys stare at you like you’re insane, and honestly? You can’t blame them.
You haven’t spoken to Steve in months, and Jonathan knows this better than anyone.
“Y/N,” Steve lowers his voice. “I haven’t had anything to drink, there’s no need–”
“Too bad. I’m taking you home. Jonathan, go find Nancy and make sure she gets back okay.”
Jonathan and Steve try to argue, but you yank Steve’s hand and make him come with you. It’s long past time the two of you had a talk, anyways.
–
When you exit the house, the weight of everything that’s just happened catches up to you. Your skin still feels raw, Billy’s presence lingering on you. Steve’s hand is warm in yours, but he isn’t holding on the way you secretly hoped he would. Jonathan’s confused and concerned eyes remain in the back of your mind, the image of him standing alone in the party makes you feel guilty.
But you have to do this. You’re tired of being a coward.
Steve is silent as he guides you to his car. He’s parked pretty far, which you hadn’t been expecting. “What, do you not get a special parking spot as King Steve?”
He ignores your attempt at a joke and instead drops your hand.
Okay. You deserved that.
When you get to his car, Steve throws you the keys and silently gets into the passenger seat. You inhale, willing this to end well, and get in the driver’s seat. You start the car and the engine warms your fingertips.
You start to drive.
Steve is looking out the window, and you’ve never seen him appear so small. He’s closed into himself, his shoulders are hunched and his carefree smile from earlier is gone.
“Not to make this awkward, but I kinda don’t know where you live.” You break the silence.
“Make a left up here.”
“Do you want to talk about what happened tonight–”
“Why do you only ever care about me when I’m some kicked fucking puppy?”
Steve’s words are vicious, and you flinch at his tone. “You know that’s not true,”
“It’s not?” He scoffs at you. “Then explain what happened this summer.”
“I…” You can’t.
Steve sees your reluctance to say anything and lets out a harsh laugh. “Yeah, whatever. Some real fucking friend you were.”
You take a shaky breath. You knew this would be hard, but it still hurts more than you thought it would’ve. While you can’t tell Steve everything, you can offer him a half truth. It’s all you can afford, and it isn’t nearly half of what he deserves, but it’s all you can do. “I got scared.”
Your confession causes Steve to turn to you. “Scared?”
“Yeah, scared.”
“Gee, Y/N. That really explains a ton.”
You’re losing him again, so you offer him more. “I’m sorry, Steve. I really am. It’s just… I got scared, I’ve never been good at letting people in. I know it doesn’t excuse my actions, and you didn’t deserve any of it, but you just… You scared me.”
Steve is silent again, only mumbling a quiet, “Turn right after this light.”
“Look,” you push down your fear, you need him to hear you. “You came crashing into my life in such a violent way, and it became the best goddamn thing that happened to me. There you were, spending every day at my job just to talk to me. You asked me questions about myself and noticed things no one else had before and I just… I couldn’t do it.”
You look over at Steve and soften your voice, putting every ounce of your guilt and sincerity into your words. “I missed you.”
“Missed?” There’s something in Steve’s voice that you can’t quite decipher, it’s almost too delicate to examine.
“Miss. I miss you,” you correct, and it takes everything within you not to confess more. To tell him you miss how his eyes turn a warm toffee in the late afternoon light, that you miss his obsession with his mom’s banana bread and that you have a recipe at home that you never got to make for him. You almost tell him that even though you pulled yourself away, you can’t seem to separate him from you. He’s everywhere.
But what you can’t tell Steve, what would break you if he ever found out, is that you’ve come to love how he’s everywhere.
Steve is silent, and you swallow down your tears. It wasn’t enough, but at least you tried.
As you turn into his driveway, Steve finally speaks. “All my life, all I’ve ever wanted was for people to like me.”
“Steve…”
“And every time I think someone finally likes me, I’m wrong. They leave me. I mean, you left me without a fucking word, Nancy lied about loving me, and my bullshit friends at school have replaced me with Billy.”
Nancy lied about loving him?
Steve looks down at his hands, his eyelashes are wet with fresh tears. “I don’t know what I keep doing wrong.”
You throw yourself across the car’s console and wrap yourself around the boy. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”
Steve places one arm around you, then slowly he places his other, and for the first time in months you’re finally back in his arms. He’s surrounded in you again, and he never, ever wants to let you go.
“You won’t leave me again?”
Steve asks this so softly, as if too scared to bring the words into the light and risk them scaring you away. You tighten your arms around him and bury your nose into his neck, his cologne making your brain dizzy. “Never.
And it’s enough for now.
The pieces settle between you and Steve. Something clicks into place and you know that he feels it, too. He tightens his own arms around you, draws small circles against your back, and you stay like that for what feels like hours.
Eventually the two of you break apart and head into his house. He offers you something warm to drink, but you decline. It’s late, you should be heading home soon. You ask Steve where his phone is and then call Jonathan, telling him to come get you from Steve’s.
Jonathan doesn’t ask any questions, his own voice sounding off on the phone. You know that tomorrow you’ll have to explain to him what happened with Steve, and he’ll have to explain what’s happened with Nancy. But tonight, you both settle on ignoring the topic for now.
Steve waits with you downstairs for Jonathan.
“If we’re going to be friends again, then I demand my nickname.”
You look up at the boy and laugh. “What if I told you I still haven’t figured it out yet?”
“Can you at least give me a hint?” Steve bats his eyelashes at you and you shove him away with another laugh.
“Hm,” you think for a moment, reveling in the simplicity between you two again. “It’s lovely. That’s all I can say.”
Steve makes a face. “Lovely? That’s all I get?”
“Mhm.” You poke his face. “For now, please just trust that I’ll stay.”
Steve looks away for a moment, and you admire his lovely side profile, before he finally seems to settle on his thoughts. “Fine, but I expect some type of baked good every day from here on out.”
“Deal.” You raise your pinky and offer it to Steve, who smiles and shakes his head, but wraps his own pinky around yours.
Steve’s eyes are still red, from exhaustion and heartbreak, and yours are probably no better. You know there’s so much the two of you have to face tomorrow morning, to talk about and deal with. Nancy, Jonathan, Billy. But for now, Steve’s pinky is around yours and you couldn’t ask for a better end to your night.
It’s a start.
It’s all you could’ve asked for.
Jonathan arrives later and waits in the car, seeming to sense that you want some privacy as you say goodbye to Steve.
“That’s my ride.” You nudge him. “Oh, don’t think I forgot about the Nancy thing. We’ll talk about that tomorrow.”
“What–”
“We’re friends again and I nag all my friends about their emotions. You were spared last year, but this year? Buckle up, buddy.”
Steve lets out a tired laugh. “Do I have to sign another contract?”
“Nah, you just have to trust me.”
“I do.” He says, no ounce of hesitation.
You squeeze his hand. “Then that’s all I need. Goodnight, Steve. Get some rest.”
Steve nods and watches as you walk towards Jonathan’s car. He stays outside for a while, long after the car has faded in the distance. The cold air makes him shiver, but after everything that’s happened tonight, he welcomes it. His mind is spinning, he’s not sure if he feels more heartbreak or relief, but he decides he doesn’t care.
For now, he’s content.
Now that he has you in his life again, no matter what happens between him and Nancy, he knows he’ll get through it with you holding his hand.
–
The drive home is quiet. Both you and Jonathan seem to be lost in your own thoughts. When you get to your house, you simply tell your friend, “Tomorrow. We’ll talk about it all tomorrow,”
Jonathan nods, his eyes as tired as yours. “Tomorrow.”
You walk inside your house and notice all the lights off. You’re home later than you originally planned, your mom must be asleep already. You kick off your shoes and sigh tiredly. Tonight has exhausted you.
However, you feel bad about skipping out on the boys, so you walk towards Dustin’s room and quietly knock on the door to apologize. After a few knocks, Dustin cracks his door open. “Yes?”
“Hey, just wanted to ask how tonight…” You notice Dustin’s stance, how he seems to almost be trying to block your view of something. “Is everything alright?”
Your brother quickly repositions himself. “Fine! Nothin’ to see here!”
He’s definitely acting suspicious.
“Open the door, show me what’s inside.”
You go to shove your way in, but Dustin scrambles and ends up shouting, “Will had another episode tonight!
“What?” You freeze.
Dustin lets out a breath of relief. He knew using Will’s episode would be a good distraction from what he has in his room. “Will, he had another episode. He’s fine, though… Just thought you should know.”
“Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it?”
“Actually,” Dustin lets out a yawn. “I’m kinda tired. Ya know, trick-or-treating is hard work. Can we just call it a night and talk about it tomorrow?”
“I mean, I guess?” Your list of things you need to talk about tomorrow keeps growing.
“Sweet! Goodnight, Y/N!” And with that, Dustin slams his door in your face. He presses his back pressed against his door as he steadies his heartbeat. That was close, too close. After a couple seconds, he walks over to his turtle’s tank and greets Dart again. “Sorry buddy, had to get Y/N away. She’d freak if she found out about you.”
Dart lets out a small screech in response.
“Wonder how long I can keep this from her.”
Meanwhile, you stand in the hall for a moment, completely bewildered as to what’s just happened. It feels like you missed a few important details. There’s something happening, but you have no idea what.
You go to your room and make a plan. Tomorrow, you’ll order a code blue with Dustin and demand information. For now, all you can do is get ready for bed and hope that whatever he’s hiding, it isn’t as monumental as El had been.
Tonight, you go to bed thinking of Nancy and Steve, worried about them both.
Just a Little More
Steve Harrington x fem!reader
Summary: Steve's over Nancy, and there's a girl on his mind. One night out and some flirting might lead to a jealous Steve getting drunk.
This is a repost since the old blog doesn't work anymore. 🥰
Tumblr media
I'm not a party person. I'm definitely not a party person.
The music is too loud, the people are... too many. I don't know how Steve always manages to drag me in these things.
And yet, here I am, once again.
"C'mon, don't give me that face," he tells me as we walk to the house hosting the party. "You need to go out more,"
"I'm fine as I am. Thanks" I complain. "you just insist because you need moral support"
"For what?" He asks, faking innocence.
"You want to see Nancy"
"That's... no, okay? I'm over her. I swear." He says confidently "my eyes are on someone else now"
"Oh yeah?" I ask, with a surprised laugh "and who might that be?"
"I'm sure you already know her" he answers.
"Please don't tell it's Robin" I beg, I couldn't even warn him.
"Nah, don't worry." He says wrapping an arm around my shoulders urging me to walk faster towards the party "you'll find it out... sooner or later"
"Whatever"
I hope he's not gonna have his heart broken again. I hated seeing him after the break up with Nancy.
We've been friends for a little while now. We got closer last year after an alternate dimensional creature attacked me, Nancy, Jonathan and him at Byers' house. He turned out to be not so much of an asshole, he even became my brother's best friend... big surprise. And now we're here.
As we enter the big house we're instantly surrounded by music, people and a strong smell of alcohol.
"Want something to drink?" Steve shouts over the music in my ear.
"No, thanks" I shout back.
"I'll be right back" he tells me.
"I'll go get some air"
He gives me a 'already?' look, nods and goes to the kitchen I suppose.
Yep, I decide I already need some air so I try to find my way to the back.
I walk through the sea of people dancing and chatting at the party as quickly as possible until I successfully get to the back.
Luckily there are a very few people, some are smoking and some are... holding their heads, feeling dizzy probably.
I try to enjoy the moment of peace, my mind wandering about who the girl Steve has a crush on now might be. Especially since he told me I know her.
Could it be Casey from my art class?
Or maybe it's Kelly...
I really can't-
"Hello there"
A voice interrupts my stream of thoughts.
Turning around I find myself face to face with none other than Billy Hargoves himself.
"Uh... Hi" I politely say, turning back around away from him.
I sense him walking beside me, he doesn't speak, though I can feel his eyes on me. The gesture makes me more nervous as seconds go on.
I try to not acknowledge him tok much, hoping he'd get tired and walk back inside, but unfortunately he stays.
Where the hell is Steve when I need him?
"I feel very lucky tonight" he casually say.
"Why's that?" I ask, knowing there's no way to ignore him anymore.
"Because I finally got you on your own and not attached to Harrington's hip" he answers with a grin.
"Yeah... uhm.. he's just getting something to drink. He... he'll be here sooner or later" I nervously laugh, trying to sound as casual as him.
"The later the better" he says softly.
"Uhm..." I think of something to say but nothing comes out.
"You tutor my sister, right? Well.. my step-sister" he asks.
"Yeah,I think. Max, right?"
"That's her. She always talks about you with my father and his girlfriend. She always talks about how nice and gentle you are" he speaks softly, slightly leaning towards me.
"Yeah.. well, that's nice of her..." I say, not looking at him "I only try to make her feel as comfortable as I can"
"And we all appreciate it" he basically whispers in my ear.
I step away, but I tripp into what looks like a vase and almost fall.
Billy's hands quickly catch me, helping me up, but even when I'm up straight again he doesn't let go. His grip isn't tight, I could shrug it off, but I can't seem to anyway.
"Careful there, gorgeous" he winks.
"Sorry... uh... thanks" I finally get out of his grip.
"My pleasure" he says looking down at me. He's still very close to me and as soon as I can catch his eyes falling to my lips, I take a deep breath turning my head to look back inside for Steve.
"Uhm... I think I'll go find Steve... I'll see you around" I say walking past him, but he moves to block my way.
"I'm sure he's fine. Stop worrying about him, for once... and" he moves his hand to rub, so slightly, my arm. "And start to worry about yourself... maybe we-"
He's cut off by Steve's voice.
"There you are!"
He's drunk... already?
"Ah! King Steve finally joined us!" Billy declare sarcastically.
"Are you drunk already?" I ask.
"Me? I could never..." he walks towards us, but almost fall as he nears.
"Yeah... sure" I say unconvinced.
"Damn... don't you look stunning..." he hiccups.
"Yeah. Okay. We're going." I state.
"No no no no no no" Steve blurts out. "You were having fun with him. Keep... keep going"
Oh god...
"C'mon Steve." I try to grab him to make him walk, but he yank himself away, falling to the ground.
"Don't worry, I'm okay" he quickly blurts out.
I let out a bug frustrated sigh, thinking about how to bring him home.
"Need a help taking his ass home?" Billy suddenly asks.
"I... you don't" I start.
"It's no trouble, sweetheart" he grins. "C'mon"
He grabs Steve's arm and lifts him up, helping him walk all the way to Billy's car.
"Open the door" he tells me and I rush to open the backseat door so Billy can make Steve lay there.
Then Billy and I get in as well and he starts to drive.
------
"Thanks, Billy" I say as Billy help Steve sit on the couch in Steve's house.
"No problem, sweetheart" he smirk looking back at me. "Take care, King Steve" he adds sarcastically
I walk him to the door.
"You know...how about you and I finish what we started earlier?" He suggests.
"Uh?"
"About you starting to worry about yourself instead of him." He says, moving to grab my hand.
"Uhm... I.. I'm sorry..." I carefully move my hand out of his grip, glancing quickly at Steve on the couch "I better check on him"
"As you wish" He raises both hands in surrender, but surprisingly he smiles too. "If you ever change your mind, give me a call, sweetheart"
When Billy walks back to his car I walk back to Steve.
"Let's get you to bed, uh?" I say and he mutter something I can't catch.
I help him upstairs and to his bed.
"Oh thanks" he says like he just realised what's happening.
"No problem, Steve" I say as I help him take his shoes off.
"I ruined your night" he mutters.
"What?" I'm confused.
"You seemed reeeeeally comfortable with Hargoves tonight" he blurts out.
"What are you talking about?"
"I say you two talking.. and he was preeeeeetty close" he explains.
"We were talking about Max, his sister. I tutor her"
Why do I need to explain myself? And why does he sounds... jealous?
"He was too close" he states and he finally crawls to lay under the covers of his bed.
"Yeah. I guess." I say with a say and heading downstairs to grab him a glass of water.
"Where are you going?" He asks.
"To grab some water"
"You coming back... right?" He seems.. anxious. Why?
"Sure"
I walk downstairs to finally grab a glass and quickly go back to Steve only to see him talking his shirt off, to sleep, the sight blocks me.
It happened before... I already saw him taking his shirt off, for any sort of reasons.. well.. not all possible reasons. But now... now feels different. Why?
Fuck.
I take a deep breath and walk back in his bedroom.
"There you go" I hand him the glass and sit on the bed.
"Thank you" he says and manages to drink the whole glass.
"You're welcome"
We stay in a comfortable silence for a little while, Steve layed down taking deep breath and me sitting on his bed playing with my fingers.
"You feeling okay?" I suddenly ask and he hums nodding.
"Good. You need anything I'll be downstairs" I tell him with a smile and get up.
"What? You're not sleeping here?" He gestures to the other side of the bed.
"You want me to sleep there?" I chuckle.
I always sleep on his couch when sometimes it's too late to walk home... never in his bed.. with him.
"Yeah." He says as a matter of fact.
"I... o-okay" I say. "I.. I just don't have anything to wear to bed"
My plan was to take off my trousers and shirt and rely on the covers... I obviously can't if sleeping in his bed.
"Just grab something of mine. I don't mind.. quite the opposite actually" he says simply.
"What?" I chuckle surprised.
"Well.. seeing the girl I have my eyes on in my clothes... God..." he says, without thinking probably.
What...
"Uh?"
"How you have realised I'll never understand" he giggles.
Okay.. he's drunk.
"Sure" I say unconvinced.
I grab one of his shirts and a pair of pj's pants and get changed in the bathroom.
As I walk back in his room he's still laying down, but he uncovered the other side of his bed for me to get in.
"Hey!" He exclaims.
"What?" I ask.
"I haven't seen you!" He complains.
"You're basically sleeping, Stevie. You can't keep your eyes open." I tell him. "Go to sleep"
"You don't believe me" he states.
"About what?"
"You being the girl... I.. like" he hiccups.
Is it true?
"You're drunk, Steve. Your just-"
"No, no, no, no" he says holding his finger to my lips, to stop me from keep speaking. "You're that girl. You. You. Yooou"
So... my crush isn't one-sided as I always thought..
"Stevie..."
"Kiss me?"
"Uh?" I ask taken aback.
"Please?" He says getting closer. Cuddling against me.
"How about this... you sleep and tomorrow morning, if you still feel like this, I'll kiss you." I tell him.
"And you'll believe me?" He asks looking at me with puppy eyes.
"Yes Steve. I'll believe you" I say, thankful for the darkness hiding my flustered face.
"Great" he says cuddling more against me.
"Goodnight Steve"
" 'Night... love"
The thing is... I do believe him. I just want him to suffer a little more.
🧠: so maybe not a *soulmate* AU more so; these people are gonna be important to who you are AU where you get a little like tattoo when said person touches you. Not all tattoos/people are *good* tho.
Steve is covered in them. He has a tree branch for Tommy on the webbing between thumb and pointer finger of his right hand that he will constantly rub when anxious. Tommy was his first friend, his first crush and heart break. He has a lopsided bunny for Carol right next to the branch. For all that she was a mean girl she had a gooey inside she only let Steve and Tommy see. The bunny looks exactly like the one he made for her birthday before she got mean to even him. He won’t know until later, until after a town splits open, until after the second boy to ever break his heart returns twisted and cruel and nearly kills him, she was defending herself in the only way she knew how.
He’s not sure when he touched Barb but she leaves a single flower, blue with a yellow inside, on his hip bone. Nancy and Jonathan leave a newspaper and camera on the underside of his chin. He’s not sure what the kids leave, and all of them from Mike & Holly to Max leave something down his spine. He’s not sure why they won’t tell him, they aren’t like his parents; empty of any mark that Steve could ever see and banning the topic, maybe they’re embarrassed?
Hopper leaves a cup of coffee on his left pec right next to Ma Henderson’s cookie. Robin, Robin leaves the biggest mark on his ass, she dies of laughter when she sees the robin with a sailors hat on there. She’s stupidly pleased when he tells her she too has a bird (a bush tit she tells him later) with a hat.
Billy leaves a mark too. He hates that Billy left a mark, a basketball on his palm. Eddie leaves a small little deer before he dies. And afterward a red flamey bird sits on its back. Wayne leaves a Garfield hat next to Hopper’s and Ma Henderson’s.
He gathers marks like a crow gathers shiny things. The only people to never leave a mark are his parents. Not even his mother who he knows loves him the best she can. Who will often spend nights running her trembling fingers through his hair. His mother who pressed her lips to his cheek. She loves him. His father doesn’t touch him often. Not anymore. When he was a child he had.
And then his parents walk in on him kissing a newly alive Eddie. His left leg and both arms are still in casts and the bandage around his throat have just been removed. He doesn’t remember much after that. Doesn’t remember the pain or the shouting. Doesn’t remember his mother grabbing a pan and threatening his father.
He will never forget waking to a small dove on the side of his nose, feathers grey and frayed. He cries when Eddie runs his fingers over it.
