Irish Bonnachts
i again! As part of my work on the Irish figures, I definitely got won over to the idea of multi-basing my figures, so I began the task of peeling off the old individual bases for my kern that I had done in late 2021 and grouping them together!
As part of the rebasing I also wanted to bulk up my old bonnachts from twelve to twenty-four figures, and also redo the painting on some of the older léine that I weren't quite happy with with a year's worth of hindsight to them (and also having picked up a wet-palette in the meantime too!).
To keep things as varied as possible, I've tried to include as many head and weapon swaps as possible, including four with swords and shields to stretch out the number of close-combat figures available!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And also as part of the units I've added some to be a command base, with a piper and a standard bearer. The flag is interchangable, so the unit can be fielded with the flags of any Irish lords (although here I've used the flag for the Fitzgeralds of Kildare)
Tumblr media
With the bases, the aim is to field the Bonnachts as either two blocks of 12, or a combined group of 24 (as a mirror to formations of bills in Never Mind the Billhooks)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The inspiration for the figures here, including many of the headswaps, came from Stuart Mulligan's blog post here, which has an excellent writeup of the historical context and terminology around the clothing: https://stuartsworkbench.blogspot.com/2021/11/irish-kern.html
I've also used the idea of mixing different shades of yellow from the blog post to indicate different levels of quality of dye (and to avoid having everyone be wearing the same shade of yellow). So roughly half the unit have the brighter, bolder yellow, and a lot of the rear rank, and most of the duplicates, have a more faded mustard/ochre colour being used
The ionar (jackets) were a pretty fun opportunity to include some additional colours in the unit, on top of the yellow. I've taken some inspiration from this site (which sells reproduction clothing) in terms of the colours and patterning: http://www.gaelicattire.com/ionar.htm
I hope they've turned out ok! Focusing on the brighter, warmer yellows for the léine is definitely growing on me, with fewer of the drab ones in the mix!

How does it feel to be an expert in a dying field? And how do you know it’s over when you can’t let go? You can’t let go, you can’t stop, can’t rewind. Love is learned over time, til you’re an expert in a dying field.

It had been at least two weeks since Jeremy's last incident with world hopping and the man had started to get nervous. Most would be happy, thrilled even, to have the chance to breathe. Jay was not most people: he was an Xavier. By now he kept a messenger bag filled with glucose tabs, trail mix and jerky on his person at all times.
Finally, it happened. As he went to step out of bed he was sucked into the floor and dropped, face first, onto carpet. To add insult to injury one of his slippers fell onto his ass with a soft 'plop'. God he hoped Scott wasn't there to see. He'd never hear the- something was off here. As he got to his knees, his poor back, he glanced around the room. The decorating style wasn't familiar, the pictures on the wall were all of people he couldn't recognize, and there wasn't a herd of superpowered teenagers threatening him.
"Where in the kentucky fresh fried fu-" His head panned to the side as movement registered in his peripheral vision. Busted. "I can explain?"

Sir Thomas Fitzgerald
Hi again!
This time, as a continuation of the Irish force I've already started on the side, I’ve decided to put together a command base. The figures are a lot of fun to paint, so it was a good way to get back into the swing of things! Plus, it’s been sort of a first foray into multi-basing figures, as opposed to individually basing them The commander here is intended to be Sir Thomas Fitzgerald, who fought (and died) at Stoke Field in 1487, fighting on the Yorkist side there in command of the Irish contingent. I've left the figures themselves without any liveries, and the banner is interchangeable, so he could just as easily stand in for Silken Thomas in his rebellion against Henry VIII, or really any other Irish knight or lord in the late 15th or early 16th centuries!

Most of the figures on the base are straight from the Perry Irish command (although the one with the sword has a head-swap!), while the Gallowglass lurking behind Fitzgerald is from the Antediluvian Miniatures Dürer Galloglass set. Fitzgerald himself is based on a Perry WotR standard bearer, with a plume added to his helmet, and a two-handed sword in place of a polearm, to fit more thematically with the rest of the Irish force. As a knight (or lord, depending on which Fitzgerald) with ties to England and the Pale, I wanted to set Fitzgerald apart from the other figures, so I decided to use an armoured figure as the base, but at the same time to show that he's still very much Irish (or Anglo-Irish, at least in the Fitzgerald case), he's wearing his yellow léine tucked under the armour. I've also given Fitzgerald a beard, as part of making him a more 'generic' Irish commander. The beard itself is partly based on this portrait of Silken Thomas from the 16th century:

Hopefully they've turned out ok!

The Beths ✨
The Beths are an indie band from Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, with three studio albums, a live album, a couple eps, and recently completed a couple international tours with many sellout shows.
And they are the fricken best NZ band currently recording, in my opinion. (by all means tell me who you think are better I might not have heard of, but consider : the Beths.)
They mainly work in the indie rock format, their earlier stuff being quite pop-punk (though the title track of Jump Rope Gazers sounds uncannily like nostalgic Taylor Swift it's a bit disconcerting). Their 2022 album Expert In A Dying Field, is mostly nicer soundwise, a bit less distorted as a whole (with the notable exception of Silence is Golden, with a searing solo and excellent high-on-the-fretboard-bass-playing), but still with the unflinchingly personal lyrics that typify Beths songs. They have extraordinarily catchy choruses, memorable tunes and a fine combination of distorted guitar and chirpy backup vocals.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Elizabeth Stokes' songs are full of passion, tenderness, and the very real anxiety of sharing your feelings with people. They bring up real emotions and experiences, things everyone even slightly introspective and introverted and socially anxious is surely very familiar with. Her lyrics, even when bordering on Morrissey-level angst 'you wouldn't like me / if you saw what was inside me' and 'misery loves me / but I don't love her', often surprisingly dark contrasting with the cheerful tone of the melody 'I told you that I was afraid / of stating my opinions in a clear and honest way [...] some thoughts are best deleted // I don't know what I'm getting up for'. The lyrics are highly emotionally charged while still seeming completely genuine, without the melodramatics.
Producer/lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce reminds me of Lenny Kaye (or Johnny Marr, but for some reason Lenny Kaye) - the guitarist who is crucial in shaping the sound of the band, singing backup (and backing vocals are a key feature of Beths songs) and being a *presence* in the music. His solos are excellent, drawing from a wide variety of indie influences, being technically quite good, impactful without showing off or going on too long, they always suit the song very well. He seems a true musical partner, and any band that produces their own music has full respect from me. They've had a couple drummers, especially for different tours, the drumming is a bit more heavy on their first album Future Me Hates Me. There are so far not really any particular stand out basslines I can remember but the bass always has really good tone. All band members contribute vocals, which I think is really cool.
The Beths make particular use of NZ made amps like Jansen - quick NZ music history courtesy of my friends dad / band mentor - for a long time from the 60s onwards, it was cheaper to build amps here than it was to import them from the US, so there are a lot of virtually indestructible vintage amps lying around the country - and Stokes also has a really vibey looking turquoise guitar, never seen another one like it. Their music videos are also really cool, have that nice indie / low budget / *lets do random stuff in front of the camera with some props* vibe to them.
I have seen the Beths live once, which was amazing and I loved it, it was one of those gigs that makes me want to go home and practice so that I can one day be that cool. They are really heavy live, far more distorted and on the rock end of the indie spectrum. I have also been lucky enough to meet them after said show and get a cd signed, they were all really nice. I said to Elizabeth that I had learned Future Me Hates Me with my band, and she asked if it was easy or hard, and I said it just has a lot of chords (she agreed, it does have a lot of chords). Next time they do a show here I am 100% going. I hope they will have a new album out in the next couple years and continue to explore their style a bit more, and that they continue to find an international audience because they are certainly good enough to.
Lots of love to the Beths <3

Nothing is forever. Nothing is the air I breathe. It’s in the water, circulating right through me. And when the fire burns me into steam, I’ll float away. Away to somewhere in the ether. I could be the space between you and the air you breathe. Between what you say and mean.

Was considering job fields i'd want to work in, not solwly based on which populations i love working with the most, but which ones I would be able to deal with losing.
Almost cried considering the worst labor&delivery case i could think of.
