about Kataribanashi-hen manga (I finally? read it)
I've never read Kataribanashi-hen before, since those stories were not written by Ryukishi and I thought they might not be really good (how mistaken I was!), but I have a paper to write so naturally I'm doing litterally anything else, sooo I started reading it and while there are those stupid fanservice type of stories there are some cute ones too and some that are silly in an enjoyable way, if you haven't read it and don't plan to, here are some things I found stupid/weird/cute/sad
Punishment Games are a Silver Bullet: I liked this one, as a punishment Keichi has to go on a "date" with every girl from the club, he sits with Rika and holds her hand while she's resting, he goes to Satoko's old house with her to clean it for Satoshi's return, he finds some marbles with Rena in the garbage dump and at the end he spends time with Mion showing her that it's okay to be girly sometimes even if some may say it doesn't match her boy-like personality
Minaitoshi-hen: this one had some sad moments. it's basically a world in which Keichi is not in Hinamizawa and girlies team up to fight Takano and there's this badass Rena panel
Tumblr media
but then they are all killed and Keichi get's the syndrome while in Tokio
Tumblr media
Little Demon: what the fuck was that even...
The Melancholy of Stir-Fried Vegetables: girls going crazy for Keichi, not for me but we have a yassified Rena that looks like she's 30 and a cute satorika page
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nienagashi: Keichi has his own Beatrice arc?
Tumblr media
Hinageshi-hen: THIS ONE IS SO GOOD AND SO SAD GO READ IT YALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I'm not gonna spoil it for you, just know it's crying for Mion chapter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satokoishi-hen: oh so Teppei's redemption arc wasn't a new thing and it wasn't even Ryukishi's idea...
The Butterfly's Dream -Endless Nightmare: all of Rika's nightmares come to life (also Hanyuu is umineko-style witchfied), the chapter ends with Zhuangzi's butterfly quote
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usomabushi-hen: Satoshi wakes up and he doesn't remember Shion yet she's willing to protect him at all costs (I CRIED GUYS, you know how I adore satoshion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rika-Sato Wars: aka satorika marriage crisis, I think that someone posted panels from that chapter here lately (witch of illusions was that you bestie?) and I wanted to read it since
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cuckoo Clock and Dreams of a Loving Home: Takano (not)girlbossing chapter
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Omorashi de Naku Koro ni: while this chapter starts as a stupid haha story it takes unexpected turn and it's actually good??
Tumblr media
Limit: a different take on Meakashi, I liked this one, it's sad, it's scary, just how Higurashi should be
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome Home, Goodbye: Satoshi comes back (again!) and Rika is jelous...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it is really I'll make Rika stay in Hinamizawa forever but it's Rika keeping Satoko in her home now
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fans (even back then!) really saw how codepended the girls were and how hard saying farewell would be for Rika espiecially. I loved seeing her trying to stop Satoko (though she's spilling water to acomplish that, not blood hahah) and how devastated she feels to be left behind (ohh the pararels to gousotsumeguri!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and after Rika got jealous of Satoshi, Hanyuu got jealous of Satoko and maaaan the girlies were FIGHTING
Tumblr media
that's gotta be one of my favourite chapters (along with Hinageshi and Usomabushi)
Thank you: Hanyuu disappearing chapter (I cried again)
Yukiwatashi-hen: it's winter, Rika has problems but they have nice winter outfits tehee (and it's also a satorika chapter!)
Tumblr media
girl yes
this post is getting too long so I think I'm gonna try to at least start my assignment, till something cries again, guys!

[page 26] *Otake and Tomoe Gozen are still facing off with their respective weapons at the ready when a flash of light appears in the air just over Otake* Tomoe: ?? Otake: !
[page 27] *A beautiful woman descends. She is bathed in moonlight, her long hair tied up with gilded ornaments, a beauty mark on her lower face near her lips, and with a halo of robes fluttering behind her.* ?: Otake, stand down.
[page 28] *The woman notices Otake's bloodied state and responds with comedic expressions of disgust* ?: Eeuuugh!! Yuck!!! Gross!!! Otake: *looking annoyed* Go away. ?: Didn’t you hear me?? I said stand down!! Otake: I don’t have time for your games, tennyo. Tennyo: Games? This is a command from the great Enma Daioh Himself. Otake: …Enma Daioh has canceled my quest?
(Footnote: Tennyo = "sky maiden", heavenly beings in Buddhist mythology)
[page 29] *The tennyo folds her arms self-importantly while Otake continues to look irritated. Tomoe Gozen observes their exchange alertly* Tennyo: Not specifically. He’s calling everyone back. It’s important. And not that you asked me, but I think you should quit wasting your time on this silly pet project of yours. Otake: *walking away from her* You’re right. I didn’t ask you. Tomoe: ... Tennyo: Well, the great Enma Daioh hardly needs to rely on a dirty toy mirror to achieve his goals. Anyways, even if you don’t care about promotions, Yoshinaka’s days are numbered. It’s going to be a bloodbath even worse than the mess you made of that body. *Tomoe is silent but clearly alarmed by this mention of Yoshinaka's name and the scenario the tennyo is suggesting.* Tennyo: Don’t get yourself caught up in petty human affairs.
[page 31] Otake: Hmph. *He sheathes his sword, then walks towards the tennyo as she tosses a cloth over him. They both disappear, leaving Tomoe staring up at the empty sky over the forest.*
[page 32] *Tomoe continues looking up at the sky for several moments, then turns to Hokushin behind her* Tomoe: What did you do to get emissaries from the Underworld after— —you— —!! *She breaks off as she realizes Hokushin appears to be lying fully unconscious on the ground. The view changes to the moon high above the forest and mountains* Tomoe: Come on…!! A demon like you can hardly die that easily...!!
---
Obviously, Hokushin’s not dead. He’s just in need of a very very long nap.
“Tennyo” (Sky, or Celestial, or Heavenly Maiden) is a new character I needed to create for some important reasons. One is to be a pain in her coworker Otake’s side, and the second (maybe more important reason) is to do some of the plot work I need done that Otake won’t be able to do. Tennyo is not her name; it’s just a descriptor. Otake referring to her as “tennyo” is like when Tomoe calls Hokushin “rokurokubi” - similar to saying, “look, woman,” or “hey, kid,” or “listen, squirt”, etc. She will have a name, to be revealed in time!
Tennyo are based on apsaras of Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and are sometimes described as the Buddhist version of angels. They are obviously not the same by far but is mostly sufficient as a general comparison. There’s actually a tennyo in the first Yu Yu Hakusho movie, Kotennyo, who had a relationship with Koenma. The movies are not main series canon and the first one was more silly than anything.
In North Bound, tennyo are the predecessors to Reikai’s ferry girls like Botan, Ayame, Hinageshi - just a different appearance/presentation for the time period they are in. I have planned some stuff around this oooh ahh. Here, instead of floating on oars, the tennyo’s robe allows her to fly (per the hagoromo tradition). Hence, the cloth she uses to teleport Otake back to the Spirit World is an Easter egg - a reference to the cloth that Shishiwakamaru uses to teleport Kuwabara around during the Dark Tournament, hahaha. That cloth in Japanese is not-so coincidentally 死出の羽衣  or Shide no Hagoromo (roughly, "feathered cloak/robe of death"), so very obviously connected to the tennin (sky/celestial/heavenly people) tradition. (My headcanon is that's all Suzuki's doing - as the leader and source of all of Team Uraotogi's tools, that he's the one who "designed" the team, coming up with the names including all their items and special moves. He clearly seems to have a thing for thematic drama.)
The tennyo’s comment on Otake messing up “that body” is also a reference to the fact that Spirit World folks are not beings with physical bodies. Had Hokushin managed to “kill” Otake in this battle, he wouldn’t be dead; only his physical vessel would be destroyed. We see this in the actual series, where Botan uses a temporary physical body to interact with people in the Human World. The most obvious instance of this is during the fight against Sensui, when she jettisons the vessel to return to the Spirit World to deliver an urgent message, shocking Yanagisawa.
Whoohoo, only one more part to go to finish fight/flight!! And then… we can move back to the core time period of North Bound with Raizen…!!
Update: Here's the behind the scenes, this time with character design sketches!

Animation Task 3
6/2
For this task we were to take a scene from a film and story board it. I choose to story board a scene from the 2019 film “Ride Your Wave” by the studio Science Saru. The movie itself follows Hinako Mukaimizu and Minato Hinageshi as they fall in love after minato saves Hinako from an apartment fire. However there love is cut short after Minato loses his life in attempt to save a man who was trapped in the water during a storm. For rest of the movie we follow Hinako as she handles her grief and the arrival of Minato spirit that only she can see when looking at water.
As for the scene I choose, I decided on the first time Hinako discovers his spirit as she’s standing on a bridge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following that we were to take a sentence of our own and story board it ,
“A surprise encounter between a girl and something?”

Karma with animals just makes my heart soft.
Anywho, the first image is pretty old—got it done in September of last year. I was planning on drawing tack and only got done with Keshiki, and it just...sat there. So, uh, that’s on hold for now.
So these are Gakushuu’s and Karma’s horses for the AU. I had the idea of the females from the very beginning, so they’re their main horses. The stallions only came about through the naming process. An unused pair for the mares were Yashiro and Kuroha, but I liked those so much, I decided to add in two more horses into the mix. Keshiki and Yashiro are Gakushuu’s, while Hinageshi and Kuroha are Karma’s.
It’s funny, because each horse’s name matches it’s counterpart better. Keshiki means yellow poppy, and Yashiro means white arrow. Hinageshi means red poppy (the stallion has reddish tints), and Kuroha means black blade. Unintended, but I like it.
So Keshiki and Hinageshi are the boys’ everyday horses which they’ve known since...pre pre-teenage age? I haven’t quite decided yet—in fact, I haven’t quite decided if the boys are 14 or older in the main timeline. Age doesn’t really matter at the moment. I can figure it out later.
The stallions, I’ve decided, are their warhorses. There won’t be any wars in the story, so I’ve decided the boys also use them for jousting tournaments and hunting expeditions. They’re pretty young horses, so it’s not as grueling on them. That’s also why the brothers aren’t quite as acquainted with the two.
Keshiki was actually going to be named Manabi (as in 学日), but Karma caught on to what his brother was referencing and said he’d name his horse Gakuuma. “Oh, so you can carry on the naming tradition, but I can’t???”. Just calling Manabi stupid wouldn’t have made Gakushuu change his mind.
Also, also, the boys don’t really call their horses by their names when no one else is around. Instead, Gakushuu ended up calling his Ohime-sama, and Karma, Ojou-sama. It’s kind of an inside joke the two have. Since they don’t have any sisters and their mother’s out of the picture, the mares are essentially “the ladies of the castle”.  Really, though, it’s because those were my placeholders for them, and I grew attached.

The anime movie I had failed to judge
Introduction
Tumblr media
I had watched Ride Your Wave somewhere in early February after seeing Kiyoshi making a post on it. That post made me curious and I had decided to take a look at it. I also wanted to watch it because I wanted to write a review on it but, I failed to do so.
The 'flaws' of this anime movie
I came across some reviews on this movie which had nothing but negative words to say about this movie. They said:-
The movie is so cliched and predictable
It's the least quirky film by Masaki Yuuasa (who happens to be well known for his 'quirky' movies)
The lead male protagonist (Minato Hinageshi) is a Mary sue (a term used for characters who lack flaws and are not relatable).
The theme song is awful
Why I ended up overlooking the flaws
I failed to write a proper review on the movie. When one has to write a review, they need to be objective while doing so, that is they have to acknowledge both good and bad aspects of the movie. Instead of being objective, I rather ended up thoroughly enjoying the movie.
I have been out of touch with anime for a long time because of which I had forgotten the cliches in anime.
While I do appreciate some amount of unpredictability in movies, sometimes I hardly care for it and I hardly cared about the predictability of this movie.
This was my first movie made by Masaki Yuuasa, I am yet to see more of his works so I don't feel I can judge if it's as quirky as his other works.
When I was younger I had strong opinions on Mary sue characters like Minato. I used to hate them, in this movie I ended up overlooking this aspect because I was more interested on the female protagonist Hinako. She drew my attention more and so did the supporting characters such as Yoko and Wasabi. However I did not hate Minato. Unlike before, my opinions are not that strong anymore.
Taste in music is a subjective topic. Not everyone has same music taste. I personally liked the theme song- Brand New Story. Instead of being awful, it was pleasing to my ears, I really liked the singer's voice.
What I enjoyed in this movie is the theme, it is mainly centred around trying to start over after losing a loved one and the struggles related to it. It is a very emotional topic which intrigued me.
Conclusion
Just because I overlooked the flaws of this movie that doesn't mean I think this movie is perfect. Just like taste in music is subjective, in the same manner taste in movies are subjective as well and I mostly tend to prefer, emotional, slice of life, short anime series or anime movies and anime made for kids.

Recently Viewed: Ride Your Wave
[Despite my best efforts, the following review contains MINOR SPOILERS (though most of them are only by implication); consider yourself duly warned!]
Caught a screening of Ride Your Wave at Village East Cinema. While it lacks director Masaaki Yuasa’s usual stylistic visual flair (Mind Games’ innovative “photo-cutout” animation, Lu Over the Wall’s Fleischer-inspired character designs, et cetera), this masterpiece of magical realism is anything but conventional; indeed, in terms of its narrative, the film is subversive to its very core, delivering the sorts of whiplash-inducing plot twists and tonal shifts that I’d normally expect from South Korean cinema.
Tumblr media
Without spoiling too much (which is nearly impossible unless I confine the discussion to just the first act), the story revolves around Hinako Mukaimizu, a kindhearted (albeit somewhat scatterbrained) surfer that’s as graceful as a ballerina in the water, but struggles to find her feet on dry land. After being rescued from a blazing inferno, she falls head-over-heels in love with Minato Hinageshi, a volunteer fireman that initially appears to be everything she’s not: brave, confident, self-assured, unwaveringly optimistic, and unhesitatingly heroic.
Ride Your Wave is being marketed as a fairly straightforward romantic comedy (by anime standards, anyway), and although that’s not entirely inaccurate, it’s also extremely reductive. The story belongs to Hinako; her desire to ride life’s turbulent waves as skillfully as she does the ocean’s drives the central conflict, and she contends with myriad obstacles along the way, including failure, loss, and self-doubt. Gradually, however, her experiences teach her the value of persistence, determination, and perseverance—even if she has to fight through tears in order to attain some small, fleeting measure of success. Yuasa’s depiction of grief is particularly poignant: tragedy, he argues, isn’t something that one simply “gets over” or “moves past”; the pain that it causes always lingers, threatening to bubble to the surface at the slightest provocation... but eventually, you will learn to at least live with it.
Tumblr media
Ride Your Wave isn’t perfect; the pace occasionally slows to an interminable crawl as Yuasa indulges in a few quirky musical montages too many. Fortunately, the movie’s rich thematic depth more than compensates for such superficial structural shortcomings. Yuasa offers viewers a veritable smorgasbord of emotions, from sickeningly saccharine to devastatingly bittersweet—and I, for one, savored every single flavor.

Re-view: Ride Your Wave (Japanese: きみと、波にのれたら, Hepburn: Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara)
Ride Your Wave (Japanese: きみと、波にのれたら, Hepburn: Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara) is a 2019 Japanese animated film produced by Science Saru and directed by Masaaki Yuasa. The film premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 10, 2019 and was released in Japan on June 21, 2019.
Nulis kunci hati, foto bersama, dll.
Buat kalian, semangat mencari makna hidup! Jangan lupa bersyukur dan kalian pasti bisa melewatinya. Ride your wave! 😊

Did you take a notice of how Yukina really cares for Botan in the second movie? Not just Hinageshi but Yukina too really care about Botan
That I did. Yukina is a very caring woman, and Botan is one of her closest friends in the Yu Yu Hakusho world. Of course Yukina would want to care for her in Botan’s time of need.
That part of the movie was inspiration for the story I wrote a few years ago.

“Oooh, Ride Your Wave has a gorgeous-looking poster, what’s it about?”
19-year-old Hinako Mukaimizu moves to an oceanside town to attend college and indulge in her hobby, surfing, without much thought to her future. When her new apartment catches on fire, she is rescued by Minato Hinageshi, a 21-year-old firefighter with a strong sense of justice. Hinako is drawn to his dependable personality, and they bond when he begins learning how to surf. As the two spend time together, they fall in love; however, when Minato goes surfing during a storm, he drowns while rescuing a person.
Hinako is distraught with his death, but one day, she finds out that he appears in water whenever she sings "Brand New Story", a song the two of them often sang together. Initially happy she can see him again, Hinako later learns that he cannot be free unless she is able to move on with her life.
Oh shit. Oh fuck, oh no.

That was that. There were many really intense, different fight scenes and all the guys got to contribute to the plot progression. The downside was the damselification of almost every single female character, who were there just to get hurt so that the guys would get mad. It was like they were trying really hard to sell Hinageshi and so had to cut down the competition.
With Botan I got it, since the emotional impact of her being in danger was an important part of the story as a whole. Which is another point to the movie, reminding the audience of how important Botan is to the team, Yusuke especially, as his first teammate.
The movie was also a lot more consistent with the show than I was expecting. Outside the inequality in character treatment this was a really good movie that fits into the series as another case the guys solved as a team.
