i think also a huge part of why artists majorly refuse machine-learning (bc that’s what it is, i refuse to call it ai bc it’s inaccurate and gives tech bros too much credit) is that the people currently championing and developing those tools actively want it to replace artists. They loudly and proudly hate the arts and want every creative professional put out of work. They want every creative HOBBYIST to give up. I have seen machine-learning art generators call us artoids (like ‘femoids’ incels or unhealthily online misogynists use to refer to women. To give you the idea of the kind of hate-fueled superiority we’re dealing with) and circle-jerk to the idea of art no longer being a career and no one being able to ask for commissions anymore.

Machine-learning tools are currently a symbol of people who see creativity and art as an enemy, a boogeyman to be slain. They are designed accordingly - stealing human work to create the data, designing it so that people can generate ‘sketches’ or ‘doodles’ to deceive the layman that it was hand-drawn, using real-world likenesses without consent, etc. When tech bros get tired of weaponizing machine-learning because they think we need to get ‘real jobs’ or that furry porn artists charge too much for comms and need to be stopped, it will probably be a lot easier for artists to embrace it as it’ll be a lot easier to develop ethical tools. On top of making development easier, it could become a great tool to make the visual arts accessible for people that have disabilities affecting drawing ability. It could be a wonderful technology.

But as it stands we’re not there yet.

here's how i imagine they look like for some reason:

Much easier than expected! I tried it two different ways, once where I carved all the leaf detail with the swivel knife first, and once where I just stamped it -- and seeing as they came out nearly indistinguishable, and one was a lot less work, I'll be going with the latter.

So, trace your leaves with the stylus, and carve the longer lines with your swivel knife:

Take the A99 Craftool stamp (or something similar) and tap lightly with the pointy end into all the crenellations in the leaves:

(You have to angle the stamp very sharply towards you in order to make the gradient fade out, instead of making a clear outline of the whole teardrop shape.)

Use a narrow beveler and finish outlining the points on the leaf:

Give the leaf some depth with a smooth pear shader:

(I'm not great at using the pear shader, but fortunately it's a pretty forgiving stamp.)

Lastly, add some decorative cuts with your swivel knife. (And you do have to do this last, otherwise the pear shader smushes them.)

I'm not comfortable saying which team I for work (I'm still technically under contract until May), but I'll say that we didn't make the playoffs this year in the eastern conference. It was rough season and I'm glad its over.

Thankfully they didn't help, I've seen them with the skate sharpener and mitre saw for their sticks, and none of them should be anywhere near a power tool. They mentioned that they saw the key in the door, and one pulled at the key to try getting it out, but nothing beyond that.

I call the store manager mom (and apparently a good portion of the players too) and start with "mom I fucked up" and was obviously a good source of entertainment for them, they were saying "hi mom" through the phone and she knew the voices (we all love her <3). They're all good kids (I say this as I'm maybe 3 years older than them haha), but they're idiots (endearing).

Since the last message, my work mom has also broken the door.

DIY Woodworking Clamps and Vise:

When a commercial vise or clamps are not available to hold a project in place while working on it or need to glue it, build your own Rope Vise or Viking Clamp or improvise using other household items like a tire jack, caulk gun, bungie cord, ratchet strap or mouse trap.

Viking Clamp - Sandwich the project between two boards. Tie a rope around the 2 boards and a few inches back from where they need to grip the project. At the opposite end (not the gripping end), drive a wedge between the 2 boards to spread them apart. This will close the gripping end onto the project to be held. The rope acts as a hinge point, forcing the gripping ends of the boards tighter together as the opposite ends are wedged open farther apart. Kind of like the opposite of a spring-loaded (hinge point) clothespin which you close one end to open the other end.

Rope Vise uses a circle/loop of rope to hold the project (on a table at the top of the loop) in place by stepping on the rope loop on the floor/ground. Ideally, the rope loop is fed through a hole in a piece of wood below the project and the foot pulls the rope tight in a noose.
