I remember what it felt like to want to belong. Every time someone asked me where I was from I’d get defensive, because it reinforced my feelings that I was an outsider. . The thing is this wasn’t about other people. It was about the assessments I was making about my worth. . Assessments can be so sneaky, we don’t even realise they are self created and we believe they are true assertions. . Assessments are not facts. . They trick us into believing we are not worthy, or we don’t deserve to be here, based on nothing but our perspectIve. They can be shaped by our context, where we grew up, cultural norms, our social status etc etc. . It doesn’t mean they are the truth, so question them deeply. First bring awareness to your assessments, notice them, and ask yourself is this really true? . When I work with clients we use a process called grounding assessments. My skin taught me self - love it reminded me what belonging is. I love what it has done for my life, how it has allowed me to show up fully, and yet this week I’ve experienced resistance. . Well, self-doubt disguised as resistance, why would anyone want to work with me? There’s that not good enough story raising it’s head again . And so I dug deeper into these assessments and realised it was totally ungrounded. In fact I have evidence of by value as a coach, and my skin is not an indicator of my worth. . It’s funny tuning into this, because I realise how false it is, and yet I nearly fell for it. . Belonging can be sneaky. The idea that you are an outsider, or you don’t measure up? Sound familiar? You donthough. . When it came up for me I allowed myself to experience it fully, and then I coached myself to shift it. . It wasn’t the easy road, and it worked, and now I remember. I belong. . Sometime a seemingly simple affirmation can be more powerful than a lavish one. . Instead of starting by saying “I am a millionaire”, start with “I am enough”. . Nearly every time I dive into self coaching it comes back to this. My sense of self worth trying to tell me I am not enough. . Enoughness vs Not Enoughness. . This sneaky little concept can get into everything. It leaks through the cracks and slowly seeps into everything we do and how we show up. . Sometimes feeling I am not enough can debilitate us into inaction. It has left me at procrastination station because I didn’t recognise it as the root cause. . It’s meant I haven’t done so many things such as, applied for jobs, or moved to certain places when my heart yearned for them . And then I realised, I am worthy, and while I still joust with this negative self-talk I also know that I am enough and I get to remind myself of that every single day. . You get to as well. Do you show up differently depending who you meet? Maybe you like to play the people pleaser for some people, I mean, who are you to rock the boat? I used to be a people pleaser. For 25+ years I lived for other people. I took jobs that were ‘stable’, That I should do. I wore clothes that made me look respectable. That I didn’t know made my soul cringe. I drank because I thought it made me look cool. I sought approval from men who didn’t give a fuck about me, and I pretended to be happy. I thought if I fit in my life would work. I thought if I pleased everyone else, they’d approve of me, they’d like me. . The thing is, they didn’t. . I was invisible, or I was drunk (and reckless). I was miserable too. Many curled up in the shower crying, movie scene moments. Constantly searching for men who would reject me to validate my self hatred. Even a suicide attempt. A cry to be seen. And I was seen for all the reasons that weren’t my authentic self. . Then I found me. I slowly started setting boundaries, realising what I truly valued. I owned my weird. I started dabbling with self love. I quit drinking. #thatsoberlife I fell off the horse and then I’d climb back up. It’s still a work in progress. Less approval. More alignment. Less approval. More alignment. Climbing a mountain. It’s exhausting at times, but the view at the top is worth it. Spectacular. That’s my life now. No people pleasing here. It’s okay to feel. It’s natural. There are going to be days when unexpected emotions hit. Feel them. If you need to cry, cry. If you need to grieve, grieve. Don’t stuff your feelings down, let them out. This goes for men too. Let us see you. Facing your pain is healing, when you face it you can move it through it. When you don’t it can get stagnant, Enter dis-ease. Just allow yourself to be with whatever comes up for you and let it flow. Then when it is passed you have permission to feel joy. You get to release it when you are ready, and you get to check in with yourself and see that you aren’t holding onto the pain, like an addiction. Don’t allow it to become your new norm.
