In order to get the base pic I had to put a youtube screenshot through an image upscaler, so some of the details might be a bit wonky if you look at it too close

And with it in my collection, all I gotta do now is wait for SS 109 Bumblebee Movie Concept Art Megatron to arrive in the mail on the 7th, just so it has a proper wielder.

Until then, SS Gamer Edition 04 War for Cybertron Megs will do in the meantime, because it still works.

Today's review: Studio Series Gamer Edition Bumblebee!

This is the only figure from this line I actually wanted. It not only is a new take on the original (now very creaky and chipped) deluxe figure from 2010 but it is the only one of these new Studio Series takes that, so far, isn't a downgrade. Optimus has some good qualities but as many bad, whereas the original toy just needs an axe and its golden!

But onto Bumblebee. This toy has an amazing amount of sculpted detail across it and a decent amount of paint apps too. The vehicle mode holds steady and looks closer to the game vehicle than the original figure did, but the original was based on concept art after all. The vehicle mode can store all 3 weapons. The sword is really the only one out of place as when you had a weapon in game you could deploy it in vehicle hover mode so, for once, the exposed weapon on the hood is accurate!

Transformation is nifty, but do take care. I've already and broken and stressed 2 tabs because this thing REALLY wants to stay together as tight as possible. But when in robot mode you are left with a figure that is as close as I think we'll ever get to the mass shifting screen model.

Now, for this there needed to be a pay off somewhere. The old figure opted for a hefty, chunky, heavy backpack and inaccurate kibble on the arms. This one has opted for game accurate arms, backpack and legs in favour of a pot belly I shall dub 'oh lawd he comin!' Given the consensus online among fans I'm not the only one to think he looks like a Halloween car costume. That said he is really articulate and poses very well.

Plus he comes with a plethora of accessories! Unlike the... thing you got with the original this figure has his neutron blaster from the game, a plasma gun and his sword. The plasma gun is one I always remember favouring for its long distance shot and high power, but it was slow to reload if I recall. All three accessories are easily swapped out and can be used with any of the other Gamer Edition figures.

I used the last 5 photos to replicate some stills from the game's trailer and his concept pose.

I give Bumblebee 8/10 - If you'd prefer this figure as a different character then wait for the inevitable Cliffjumper to follow!

BUMBLEBEE ( Deluxe ) Studio Series GAMER EDITION 01

Fra i nuovi Studio Series Gamer Edition non poteva mancare la versione videoludica di BUMBLEBEE, esordito nell'ormai classico e mitico War for Cybertron, ed anche per lui si pone giocoforza il confronto con il modellino originale Generations del 2010.

Iniziamo bene dalla modalità veicolare di AUTO CYBERTRONIANA, davvero fedele nella sua forma di mouse con le ruote, indovinato già nel suo design originale che richiama le forme di quella che diverrà la forma terrestre di Maggiolino: ovviamente il Deluxe del 2010 parte avvantaggiato, e non solo per la stazza maggiore, ma anche per i finestrini laterali in plastica trasparente ed i cerchioni delle ruote idem con l'effetto "Tron" efficacissimo per questi veicoli.

Ma nel suo piccolo il SS GE si difende bene, risultando compatto e fedele, e pure con qualche dettaglio in più… magari non sulle ruote, ma le strisce rosa neon ci sono anche sui fari frontali, ecco, anche se poi non hanno manco dipinto il lunotto posteriore, vabbè! ^^'

Il veicolo può ospitare le 3 armi accessori di cui è provvisto il modellino, con l'arma leggera nascosta sotto l'auto, quella pesante sopra il tettuccio ( ma volendo vi si può posizionare quella leggera, ma non il contrario ), mentre la spada si attacca sul retro negli appositi perni… non il massimo, ok, ma almeno ha un posto dove stare.

La TRASFORMAZIONE a grandi linee è come il Deluxe originale, col muso che si abbassa a divenire il petto del robot, le ruote anteriori che finiscon sugli avambracci e mentre la parte posteriore laterale diventa le gambe, ma il COME è ben diverso, con soluzioni niente male sia nelle gambe che sopratutto nelle braccia, che risultano più game accurate e snelle.

Il WfC Generations originale era davvero ben fatto, dicevamo, ed anche il ROBOT non era da meno, ma era parecchio fuori scala nel suo essere un Deluxe bello "pieno" con di fianco il collega Optimus della stessa classe, mentre ora questo Bumblebee è giustamente più basso di una testa di un Dlx medio ( ma non meno pesante, almeno! ) e ancor meglio hanno reso Prime un Voyager!

Ma tornando a Bee, nonostante la statura ridotta si presenta ben strutturato e simile al modello in CGI, meglio in alcune parti come le braccia, meno in altre come le gambe, che hanno sì una trasformazione interessante, si diceva più su, ma a scapito di una resa estetica un po' piatta, soprattutto rispetto al Generation del 2010, con le ruote che guarano all'interno delle caviglie ma senza più i dettagli in rilievo sulle gambe.

La zainata sulle spalle è meno ingombrante, sempre rispetto al primo Generations, mentre è un bel tocco il fatto che le spalle, con il disegno dei vetri, diventino parte della carrozzeria laterale, mentre sul design delle gambe ci ritorniamo in seguito, ma il vero elefante nella stanza è il muso del veicolo a mo' di panza che si ritrova, fermo restanto che, a dispetto delle foto promozionali pure sul retro della scatola, almeno le parti laterali esterne rientrano un po'!

Il problema non è tanto quanto è pronunciato tale muso, che visto in alcune angolazioni è anche un po' sopportabile da vedere, quanto che ha pure lo stomaco inglobato all'interno, dandogli un'aria ulteriormente tozza. E sopratutto se di fianco si ritrova il modello precedente, ben più proporzionato a livello di busto.

Vorrei dire che almeno lo SS ha qualche articolazione in più rispetto al suo predecessore di 14 anni fa, ma neanche, anzi peggio, visto che gli manca quella della rotazione dei pugni, e tecnicamente pure l'inclinazione delle caviglie verso l'interno, data la disposizione delle gambe, che a sto punto mi viene da chiedermi se non siano sistemate rovescie per sbaglio di default, allorchè bisognerebbe ruotare il bacino e le cosce di 180° ciascuno per avere la posabilità cavigliare e pure delle gambe più eleganti a vedersi, senza le cerniere a metà polpacci!

Interessante il discorso di avere due blaster diversi ed una spada come accessori, quest'ultima pure davvero ben scolpita con tanti ghirigori sulla lama: se la spada s'impugna normalmente, le armi da fuoco vanno sistemate sostituendo il solo braccio destro, come già visto per Optimus, solo che tale arto poi però non trova più posto nel robot, come invece era per Prime che se lo poteva almeno appendere… dietro il sedere, e quindi resta orfano e abbandonato a se' stesso! ^^'

Insomma, per questo o per quello manca un tanto così perchè questo Bumblebee WfC sia un bel modellino a tutto tondo, che su alcune lacune ci si può passar sopra, non sia mai, ma altre magari sono proprio fastidiose sopratutto se si considera che NON è la prima incarnazione modellistica del giocattolo ED è pure fatta in una linea filologica per collezionisti dove la regola numero 1 dovrebbe essere la somiglianza alla controparte filmica / cartoonesca / videoludica che sia.

Per fortuna, ripeto, ci sono soluzioni innovative interessanti a livello di trasformazione o estetica del veicolo e robot, ma queste sono poi bilanciate in peggio da altre peggiorative, quindi direi che chi ha già il Deluxe del 2010 e non gli interessa la scala, può tranquillamente tenerselo stretto, mentre questo SS può andar bene a che non ha l'originale WfC e comunque ama alla pazzia i personaggi di quel videogioco e quindi vorrà collezionare tutte le uscite.
