Assessment 3 - Critical overview

Vernon Ah Kee’s works in the Unlimited series (2011), and the fantasies of the good series (2004), pose contrasting images of First Nations identity in the colony.

Foremost, the Unwritten series presents First Nations identity, as envisioned by white Australia; voiceless, alien-like, unsettling. The figures appear to have human-like characteristics of a person’s ambiguous silhouette, and holes for eyes. However, they are stripped of any distinct traits that would mark them as definitively humane and unique individuals. Just like Blackfellas in the colony, these ‘non-people’, are robbed of their ability to have agency over their identity. Instead, so called ‘Australia’ sees us as an anomaly; something too black and seemingly inferior, to be classified as human along with the more esteemed species- the white person.

In comparison, the fantasies of the good series present comprehensive family portraits, that are raw and undeniably human. This poses First Nations identity as we know it to be; strong, sovereign, defiant. Despite the colony’s strenuous efforts to extinguish our communities, we are still here, and we demand white Australia to see us.

Ah Kee’s exploration of First Nations identity through his work, exemplifies the importance of Indigenous art in enabling self-determination. White Australia has a rigid construction of what an Indigenous person should be, and how we can create and produce artwork in contemporary society. However, Indigenous artists reclaim identity through their work, showing the more nuanced and three-dimensional reality of what it means to be First Nations.

Furthermore, as discussed by Robert Stuurman (2003), Indigenous peoples are often boxed into a suppressive binary, and not allowed to exist as their true selves in modern society. Where Indigeneity is seen as a weakness, the colony works to dehumanise Blackfellas, to instil in us a sense of shame about who we are as a people. In Stuurman’s opinion, a primary defence against this is having a shared awareness of our true identity and expressing our culture to survive. Pointedly, artistic expression is an effective way to do this.

Additionally, Indigenous artist collectives and collaborative projects have become a powerful tool in aiding this exploration of identity. The Meanjin-based, ProppaNOW collective has become an avenue for Indigenous artists to express themselves, and their culture, outside of the constraints of white Australia. The Jus’ Drawn exhibition in 2011, portrays the contributing artists’ ideas on identity, and where they fit in as Indigenous artists in the colony. At its core, it affords Indigenous peoples agency in cultural and individual expression, enabling us to rewrite the outdated fable told by white Australia.

Overall, Indigenous existence can be complicated in contemporary society, where First Nations identity is dictated by the coloniser. However, through artistic expression, such as the works of Ah Kee, Indigenous peoples are able to reclaim their own identity.

Trevor Stuurman - Telling Stories Through Style

“Fashion is a personal and powerful medium to express things greater than myself.”

Trevor Stuurman:  global African, innovator, and artist.  He encapsulates the essence of Africa in his work, challenges the way in which Africa is portrayed and tells the story of a continent that is moving forward – striving to always highlight its beauty and power.  The Stuurman Style Diary is a platform whereby he showcases African style and everything that inspires that style. From representing Africa at Patti Imagine in Italy, to photographing AfroPunk for British Vogue and being a panellist at the Black Portraitures Conference hosted by New York University and Harvard University - Trevor has grown to reach new heights beyond the imaginable.

Trevor was born and raised in Kimberley and admits that he was inspired by his upbringing. He started defining his passion at an early age. “I cannot remember a time when fashion was not a part of my life. Growing up I was always creative.” It is manifest through his craft that he has a strong sense of self and his roots.

Today, Trevor Stuurman is not only known as a photographer, but as a creative director and style consultant as well. As a student of Film at AFDA, winning the Elle Style Reporter Search in 2012 at the tender age of 19 played a significant role in propelling his career.  “It was my first job so it allowed me to save up to buy my first microphone; it allowed me to travel the world. It gave me exposure within the Elle Magazine. My first trip to London was with Elle.”

His photography - which always emanates a blend of vibrant colours, fascinating textures and cultural diversity – is a reflection of who he is.  It is evident that all of his subjects resonate with his identity. He says with assurance, “It is part of storytelling so it’s always important to document it and it is even more important to document it from a personal point of view as opposed to a second-hand reference. African art and fashion allows me to do that.”

Trevor says that all the works he has done are memorable to him.  “I don’t see them as individual pieces but I see them as a body of work. Collectively, everything amounts to something as opposed to one standout.”

When asked if there was any creative material he was exposed to in the past that played a role in shaping who he is today, Trevor says he was shaped by everything. “I’m so multi-faceted; I can’t pinpoint one piece or one medium that shaped me.” He adds with a smile on his face, “I do it all. I’ve been shaped by everything – every little exhibition I visited, every song I’ve listened to, every travel – it’s a collection of everything. I don’t think we can narrow it down to one body of work because I’m not genre-specific, I’m not medium-specific.”

Trevor’s career has afforded him the opportunity to explore all around the world, from our very own African cities, to New York, Italy and London. He admits that traveling has made him gain new perspectives. “I don’t think you can ever travel and not change. It just allows you to see the world from a different lens.  It allows you to appreciate and value life better. Value life as it is or as you understand it.”

Many upcoming creatives grapple with preserving their creative integrity while aspiring to meet brands halfway. When collaborating with brands, Trevor strikes a great balance between sharing meaningful stories as a creative while meeting the brand’s expectation. “It’s important to put your foot down, to always establish that. You also have the choice to choose what brands to work with instead of always feeling disempowered. You choose as opposed to other way where you feel thankful for being chosen to collaborate with them. So it’s about taking yourself as serious.”

Trevor has accomplished so much in a short space of time. But he is still motivated and driven to do more. “I don’t see myself accomplished a lot yet because the dream is still so much bigger. Once you’ve achieved something, it’s done. Then it allows you to dream bigger. It’s not about what you’ve done before; it’s about what the future holds.”

Trevor still has bigger aspirations such as working with the newly appointed artistic director of Louis Vuitton Menswear, Virgil Abloh.  “I would like to see myself partnering with Virgil Abloh and Mary Sibande [a prolific Johannesburg-based artist].”

Trevor’s message to aspiring creatives is that they must find their voice.  “Find your voice, nurture it and protect it. Your voice is your weapon and it is what sets you apart.  Therefore it’s so important to be aware of that - what am I trying to say and how am I saying it. So it’s always so important to be aware of that.”

He concluded ,“Live a life that is of value and value to others.”

Opdracht 1, Tijd is geld

De groep vertrekt, na het afvallen van Jean-Marc naar het Kaukasus gebergte. Voordat de eerste opdracht begint bespreekt de groep de mogelijkheid dat er plusgeld in de pot zou komen. Wanneer er daadwerkelijk geld verdiend zou worden, hebben ze een penningmeester nodig. Jan, Emilio en Bella geven aan absoluut geen penningmeester te willen zijn, Olcay vindt zichzelf wel een geschikt persoon en de groep stemt daarin mee. Stine doet nog een verwilderde poging om zichzelf te nomineren maar net zo koud als de groep tegenover Ron was, werd deze opmerking ijzig weggewuifd.

De eerste opdracht wordt in Stepantsminda gespeeld. Leuk feitje trouwens, tijdens het opzoeken van Srepantsminda om te kijken of hier wat nuttige informatie te halen was, zijn we er achter gekomen dat de stad niet langer Stepanzminda heet, het heet Kasbegi, naar een gebiedsopzichter die de militaire weg liet bouwen waarbij Georgië met Rusland werd verbonden. Op sommige sites staat de plek nog aangegeven met de naam Stepanzminda, op andere sites heet het Kasbergi. Waarom de WIDM productie voor de “oude” naam heeft gekozen is ons nog niet duidelijk.

Art legt de opdracht uit; “Goedemorgen. Welkom in Stepantsminda. Misschien gaat de frisse berglucht jullie hier wel goed doen, dat zou mooi zijn, want er valt €2500 te verdienen voor de pot. Dus misschien, heel misschien, komen jullie vandaag wel in het groen. We zien hier vier auto’s met vier verschillende bedragen en één auto met een verdubbelaar. Daarmee gaan jullie dadelijk door dit dorp rijden.  Maar let op, er rijden ook drie rode auto’s en die gaan proberen jullie uit te schakelen door jullie in te sluiten. Als dat lukt, dan ligt de auto en daarmee het bedrag dat die auto waard is, uit het spel. Jullie moeten de vijf auto’s binnen een half uur laten vertrekken. En de opdracht is om elke auto minimaal een kwartier door het dorp te laten rijden. Ik wens jullie heel veel succes. Houd je wel aan de verkeersregels”.

We hebben trouwens opgezocht dat je, als je van rand tot rand zou rijden door het dorp, je daar een kwartier over doet. De auto een kwartier rond laten rijden zou dus op papier geen probleem moeten zijn. Olcay is naast penningmeester in deze opdracht ook de initiatiefnemer, ze geeft aan dat ze een verkenner wilt sturen. Iedereen is het hier wel mee eens, behalve Stine, en dan is de groep het weer met haar eens. Loes geeft aan dat je de kans dat je gepakt kan worden zo klein mogelijk moet maken, wat dus betekend met meerdere auto’s tegelijk te rijden. De strategie van de groep werd dat er elke minuut een nieuwe auto zou gaan rijden, dit om de pakkans zo klein mogelijk te houden.

Ruben is als eerste weg, hij heeft de auto met €50 op zijn naam staan. Al snel heeft hij een rood autootje achter zich aan en komt hij in stilstand bij overstekende schapen. Na acht minuten rijden heeft Ruben twee rode auto’s achter zich aan die hij heel slim naar de rand van het dorp heeft geleid. Helaas wordt hij bij een wegwerking uit het spel gereden.

De auto met €750 is de tweede auto die wegrijd. Hierin zit Olcay achter het stuur en ze heeft Bella bij zich. Na verloop van tijd krijgen ook Olcay en Bella een rode auto achter zich aan. Met nog zo’n twintig seconden te gaan en op weg naar de beginpositie slaan Olcay en Bella een weg in waar er een rode auto op hun af komt rijden. Ze worden hierdoor net voor de eindstreep toch ingesloten en hiermee is het grootste geldbedrag uit het spel.

Zich niet aan de afspraak houdend rijden Jan en Stine als bijrijder direct met de auto van €750 mee. Zij bevinden zich zelf in de auto met de verdubbelaar. Jan en Stine komen met 15 minuten op de klok vast te zitten op een heuveltje wanneer er een rode auto langs komt rijden. Aan één kant ingesloten krijgen ze de auto weer aan de praat. Net voor de finish slaat de motor weer af. Jan besluit het heft in eigen handen te nemen en laat Stine het stuur overnemen, met de handrem eraf begint Jan de auto te duwen richting de finish. Sine sommeert de kandidaten die al bij de finish zijn te helpen en met bijna de hele groep (want waar is Ruben??) en een vriendelijke bewoner, komt ook de verdubbelaar binnen.

De auto met €250 rijd als voor na laatste weg. In de auto zit Loes achter het stuur en Emilio haar stuurman. Na zo’n 2 minuten gok ik, vraagt Loes of Emilio de timer al had aangezet. Dit was hij toevallig vergeten, dus de vijftien minuten rondrijden moesten ze een beetje gaan gokken, of langer het risico nemen om rond te rijden. Wanneer Emilio en Loes een rode auto tegenkomen schieten ze in paniek in zijn achteruit terug de straat in, het wegrijden was zo spannend voor Loes dat ze de auto af laat slaan (of ze heeft echt een probleem met accu’s). Aan de voorkant ingesloten rijden ze opnieuw achteruit en weten ze aan het autootje te ontsnappen. Met het doel terug te gaan naar de finish denkt Loes niet meer aan de auto’s en heeft het duo geluk dat een van de rode auto’s net wegrijd waarna ze kunnen ontsnappen aan de auto achter hen en €250 veilig rijden naar de finish.

Simone zit in haar eentje in de auto die €200 waard is en is de komische factor in deze opdracht. Met moeite krijgt ze de schakelbak aan en de bult op lukt met behulp van een aardige meneer die een schietgebedje eruit stuurt. Ook in zijn achteruit blijkt een hele opgave, niet alleen bij Simone maar ook bij Olcay trouwens. Voordat Simone huiswaarts keert vraagt ze netjes of de kust veilig is, en dat was zo, ook Simone brengt haar auto netjes terug en verdient €200 voor de pot.

€900 hebben de kandidaten verdiend met deze opdracht, waardoor de pot van -€640 op €260 uitkomt.  Maar hoe kan je tijdens deze opdracht mollen? Dit kan natuurlijk door af te gaan, en het liefst met een groot bedrag, wat dat betreft zijn Olcay (en Bella, maar helaas is zij afgevallen) en Ruben het meest verdacht. Daar komt bij dat Ruben de rest van de opdracht niet meer in beeld gekomen was en pas bij het uitdelen van het geld weer bij de groep was, wat was hij aan het doen? Overigens is het ook te begrijpen dat de mol bij deze opdracht, gezien de status van de pot, ook nog de fanatieke kandidaat wou spelen en dus weldegelijk geld in de pot heeft gebracht. Tot nu toe is dat nog lastig te bepalen.
