Underwater Horror/Dark Fantasy WebComic: Illusionary Waters
Hello everyone! It's Mermay 2024, which means this is the perfect time to start a new blog where I'll post updates regarding the webcomic I'm making.
A quick summary
After making a deal with a siren, merpeople Kai and Neve become hellbent on finding out why their people keep dissapearing. Unbeknownst to anyone, this leads to them traveling and discovering the strange, horrifying, yet beautiful underwater world where sacrifices must be made.
Release date
The comic will be split up into 7 parts, with each part being approximately 25 episodes. The first episode will be posted after part 1 is finished. Keep in mind that I'm a student, which means things will take a little longer.
I expect the release to be Mermay (May 1st) 2025. Keep in mind that this is just an estimation.
In the mean time, I'll post updates, WIPs and other fun stuff on here :)
Background
I first created these characters and worldbuilding in 2017 when I was 14 years old. This underwater world has been reimagened and expanded upon ever since then. At the end of 2022 I decided it was time to actually do something with it and make a webcomic. For the past 1.5 years I have been working on creating a story within this world, with my inspiration ranging from artists like HR Giger, to games like Subnautica. (I mean, typing something on my phone every once in a while and imagining storylines in my head counts as working right?....right???). Now that I've finally got the basics, I can actually start creating this thing.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! :)

Round 1, Match 13: Emma Gilbert (H2O: Just Add Water) vs. Ice Worm (Subnautica)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emma Propaganda:
“She’s no ordinary girl! She’s from a deep blue underworld, and land or sea, she’s got the power if she just believeees!!!” Okay sorry for the bad karaoke singing. For those of you who didn’t go through a mermaid phase as a kid, this is Emma and when she took a dip in a magical island pool during a full moon, she then into a mermaid whenever in prolonged contact with water. It also gave her special powers! In season 1 she could freeze things, mostly only if they already had water on it, and in season 2 her powers got amplified so that she could freeze things regardless of if they were wet and also could summon hail and make snow storms. Her powers get her in and out of shenanigans, like in the episode “The Big Chill” she freezes local mean girl Miriam. Like she freezes and entire human being and the rest of the cast have to figure out how to thaw her back safely. Also likes to make fresh popsicles with her powers. We don’t talk about season 3.
Ice Worm Proganda:
The worm is a huge and hostile leviathan / environmental hazard that burrows in ice and attacks anything that's above it. They can burrow through ice because their horn is super-heated. They also can't be killed by the player.

Vast: Ghost Leviathan (Subnautica) "To me, they are pretty much the embodiment of the fear of the open ocean. Once you reach the Crater Edge the seabed drops away leaving nothing ahead but an empty void. You could fall through it forever if you let yourself. You get a message as you pass the boundary "Warning: Entering ecological dead zone. Adding report to databank." Keep going and an adult Ghost Leviathan will appear to kill you. Then another appears, and another. Aside from some microbes, these are the only things living out in the void. For any you manage to kill, another will take its place. As they grow, they migrate out to the void where they have enough space to keep growing. It's implied that they keep growing their whole lives."
The Eye: Vincent Price (The Price of Fear) "(To be clear, this is a fictionalised version of himself that he portrayed in a radio show, not the real life person. Although the "total strangers confess weird often disturbing and confidential things to him unprompted" aspect WAS apparently true of him in real life--I don't know that anyone ever confessed to murder but a lot of strangers who recognised him would apparently confide all kinds of secrets and strange stories to him since he was fairly nonjudgemental and wasn't the type of guy to interrupt or walk away when someone was talking to him. The "just knowing things" part…well, he did believe he had some level of psychic abilities/premonitions IRL, but I don't know what to make of that. Either way though the character being submitted for this poll is the fictionalised version, who shares a lot of traits with the real man but gets into clearly fictional situations in each episode.) Vincent discovers all kinds of Dark Secrets (TM) in the form of a different supernatural or murdery event each episode. Sometimes this involves him actively investigating mysteries to discover the truth about various strange occurrences. Other times he's more of a witness to events, often becoming the only person alive to know the truth about something horrible--for instance going on a fishing trip with a guy leads to him discovering the guy's been killing people and feeding them to sharks. Other times, people just…tell him things--in fact, people open up to him extremely quickly in most episodes, he only has to ask a couple of questions to get someone to tell him all about his experience of being possessed, but the most notable examples are the FOUR occasions where a total stranger approaches him, sits down opposite him, and confesses to murder almost totally unprompted, in an unusually coherent way (OK so one guy was a very nervous and hesitant person who takes a little bit of prompting, but his confession still forms a coherent and narratively interesting enough story to make an episode of a radio show!), while Vincent just (mostly) calmly listens to it all. Also he…knows stuff. Inexplicably. Like, maybe not concrete factual stuff so much, but like, at least to what in a different context I'd call force-sensitive levels. Any time he thinks something's wrong, or someone's in danger, or that he might never see this person again, or he claims to sense Evil, without fail he is accurate. (Also the promotional art for the show features him staring at you somewhat disturbingly.)"

Today was warm and bright.
The Sun beamed brilliantly as you basked in its heat, breathing in the distinct scent of the air instead of the accustomed whiff of the chilly weather. Several eyes bore into your direction, and those within hearing range spoke in hushed tones to themselves, either completely ignorant of the fact or purposely doing so.
Call it a hunch or instinct, but you are always most certain you are the subject of their sneaky glances and hush whispers. Especially whenever you are accompanied by the villager's Elders, their gazes harden. As much as they try their best to hide it behind their fake innocent smiles— you knew they were telling gossip about you.
Rumors of this caliber quickly spread like wildfire around your close-knit community. In every community, there was always a person that spoke behind closed doors, and that person was… her.
(R/N) disliked you. She openly admitted it to a fellow villager behind your back whenever she thought you weren't listening. Perhaps, she even hated you for being favored by the Elders. Perhaps, she despises how you were exempt from the physical labors because of it. Therefore, she was the perfect person to get information on the ruckus earlier.
So, you wait…
Spending the rest of the afternoon in your hut, face buried in a book after cleaning the tiny space. The constant ticking of the clock on your wall mildly reminded you of how much time has passed. You remain seated in your lounge, waiting for the surroundings to darken like you've always had – this time to sneak out to gather intel instead of visiting your boyfriend.
You expertly stepped out of your hut without a sound, heading towards a specific location. The skies were littered with a veil of clouds, making it easier to creep up to your destination: the Leader's hut, where the adults have their meetings at midnight. The bushes gave you plenty of cover to stand near an open window as you listened in to (R/N) carelessly informing the Council about the severe problems caused by the God in the sea.
You knew of the God who resides in the sea. Colossal Emperor, as they call it. You've heard stories from the Elders of its large stature and how it can cause rainstorms every time it resurfaces above the sea. You found the tale intriguing, as terrifying as it might sound to a child and the other village folks. You'd always visit the beach where the said God surfaces, hoping to catch a glimpse when it does.
You shook your head, trying to focus on the task at hand. "There's only one way to stop these constant rainstorms, and I suggest we bring an offer." She proposed.
"We can't. We have limited cattle and crops." Countered by another.
"How about a human sacrifice?"
"That's inhumane! Everyone has a role in this village—"
"Besides one." Everyone fell silent, and you immediately knew who she was referring to. "She hasn't contributed to this village like the rest of us have. She served this village for no purposes besides entertaining the Elders."
What she said was the truth. Although, advantages were keeping the Elders company, such as being favored by them and being exempted from physical labor. They were not the ones in charge of this village's community. It was the Council and their Leader, Irihata Nobuteru.
"I agree with bringing an offering for the Colossal Emperor, but," Irihata started, "we mustn't stain our hands with murder." The rest of the Council agreed with the Leader's statement, and there was a slight pause before he broke it. "How about we vote on which approach we should proceed with?"
"Who votes for bringing an offering such as food, cattle, and so? Please raise your hands." Several hands raised their hands, but it was clear that the majority would vote for the next option. "Since the majority didn't raise their hands, is it safe to assume that everybody agreed to offer a living human?" Everyone nodded.
"Let us hope this sacrifice will suffice. We can't afford another rainstorm if this fails." With that, they ended the meeting right there and then.
The following morning came, and two women from the Council were in front of you. It was really quite a sight to behold, watching them squirm and stutter at your front door as they attempt to explain your circumstances that you already knew. The shame and guilt on their faces bring you slight solace for your own sake. You didn't dare interrupt them nor ask for an explanation— you were sure they'd give you pointed and disapproving looks.
The whole village knew you were orphaned, which is why you were close to the Elders, as they were the ones who raised you as their own. Additionally, they knew you didn't have any lover they knew of – making you the perfect sacrifice to offer for the Colossal Emperor.
"… when?" You simply ask, looking down at the ground as you clenched your hands into fists while trembling slightly. A mix of emotions swirled through you: sadness, confusion, frustration, hopelessness, and… rage.
"Tonight, at sunrise." You nodded sadly in understanding before closing the door with a soft thud as you slid down against the door with your hands on your face. You knew it would eventually come to this – it was in a human's nature, after all. To simply discard those who aren't helpful to them. You just didn't know; it would be this quick for them to throw you away.
You spend your morning reflecting on your time here at the village, reliving the memories you shared with the Elders. In the afternoon, you visit them and say your goodbyes after informing them of your fate. These people were the ones who became your parents and family, especially Granny Aoi. You decided to stay there, giving them one last memory before you ultimately disappear from the village and their lives.
Night came faster than you anticipated, and you quickly sneaked out of the Elder's hut when they least expected before walking towards the Leader's hut and knocking on his door. He opened the door, revealing his relatively short yet large build.
"Yes?"
"Just in case, can you promise me that you'll evacuate the Elders and children, taking them as far away as possible?" Your abrupt request seemed to have taken him by surprise. It was unexpected. "This is my only condition."
Irihata reluctantly agreed to your favor, and you left him be for the night. This interaction, however, gave him an unsettling feeling in his gut. It was… as if you knew something that he doesn't, and he can't seem to pinpoint it. Your words stay with him, haunting him until he finally gives in. Irihata woke the Elders and children, telling them to leave the village immediately and to hide in a large cave within the forest until further notice.
Meanwhile, you walked down the beach to visit your boyfriend. This was located underneath a cliff just a few miles away from the village. The Elders have always warned you to avoid that cliff as the Colossal Emperor is said to snatch unsuspecting people there whenever he resurfaces. Yet, he never appears whenever you are there.
But you did meet him there whom you've met purely by chance. It was at night during one of the rainstorms that the said God would cause, and yet, you didn't see a towering monster – what you saw was a man in the water, staring off at the cloudy skies above. You learned that his name was Matsukawa Issei. You're not exactly sure what drew you to him in the first place – he was mysterious and brooding from a distance. Still, with you, he was easy-going and always managed to make you laugh somehow.
A smile forms on your lips as you spot him leaning against the edge of the docks with his lower half submerged in water. "Is it finally the day, my dear?" He asks with a toothy grin when you reach him, and you give a grin of your own in return.
"Indeed, it is, my love."
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
The cold rain breeze made you shiver as you woke up, tied up on a wooden post that was promptly embedded into the ground. The rain trickled heavily, covering your surroundings in a thick mist. Despite this, you can still trace multiple silhouettes in front of you. Besides the crashing waves beneath you and the loud rain pouring, you could still make out a… prayer?
In your stunned state, it sounded almost like a ritual. But before you could recover from your daze – the post you were tied to suddenly spun around, knocking the air out of your lungs as you gasped in horror when you faced the cliff edge. The uneasiness in your stomach grows as you stare at your fate.
Will this be the end? Will this really be how I leave this cruel world by being sacrificed to a God I don't believe in?
A sting of pain on your palm managed to bring you back to reality – a warm liquid dripped down from your hand. You could almost whiff the scent of blood through the overpowering combined smell of the earthy soils of the forest nearby and the briny waters of the sea below.
Then, you and your companions hear the sounds of water splashing on the rocks underneath and accompanied by a low roar. Your heart almost jumped out of your chest as you came face-to-face with the humongous anomaly.
"Oh, Colossal Emperor, please accept this humble offering from us, and in exchange, would you be so kind as to ease these rainstorms?"
The creature brought up a clawed limb, tearing through your bindings, before picking you up in its hand and staring at you. The villagers below rejoiced by God's acceptance of their offering; however, they soon realized that the storm wasn't easing away.
Confusion was written on their faces as they watched the Colossal Emperor open its hand and see you stand on its palm with a triumphant smile. Their confusion slowly turns into fear as it lets out a deep growl when it inspects your wounded hand.
You dared lay a finger on her?
It spoke telepathically in their minds. The voice sounded of a male human with a deep and alluring tone. They could also hear the low rumbling noise from its throat as it raises itself more, showing its proper height to the people.
"We've offered you a sacrifice!" A council refuted.
It clicked its tongue. You hurt her.
"It was necessary!"
Was it? It chuckles darkly. How foolish of you to think I control these storms when I simply emerge when it happens? It paused for a second, letting its words sink in. A shame, really. You all could've lived but
Anyone that touches what's mine is punishable… by death.
The rain had ceased, and the sunlight shone brightly through the cracks of the clouds in the sky. There you were in your soaked and mud-covered white dress, standing eerily still at the center of bloodied corpses of the adults and former Council members – except one. You crouched down to Irihata's eye level, his blood-covered body trembled as he stared at (R/N) 's decapitated head at the front of his feet.
"Why?" He asked desperately and almost pathetically in a hoarse tone while looking up at you. You saw the immersed feelings of suffering and anguish in his eyes that were practically eating him alive.
You offer him a kind smile, making him almost forget the whole ordeal. "Because you deserved it, leader."
"For you, death is a mercy you aren't entitled to."
Again, your words echoed in his mind. A forever reminder of his failure to protect his people who were with him as he watched your retreating figure, leaving him there to wallow in his thoughts. You were practically glowing in excitement as you walked back toward your lover at the idea of your new lives together.
He again lowers his palm to the ground, just enough for you to climb onto it. Lifting it up to stare at each other, wordlessly communicating before slowly pushing his torso off the cliff, preparing to take his leave with you.
"Wait!" Irihata yelled, running to the cliff's edge and hoping to catch up on you before you left. But he was too late, both of you – you and the Colossal Emperor vanished with a massive splash before he could even reach the edge.
You two quickly arrived at your stop, just as hasty as you left. Matsukawa settles you down on a beach shore after roughly dragging you underwater. The wet smooth gritty sand beneath you clang onto your bare feet and in its crevasses, making you cringe at the contact before it was washed away by the tide.
"We make a pretty good team, don't we?" You turn to face him, mirroring his twisted grin. "I still can't believe it worked." Although still towering over you like a predator, his current form resembles a human-sized scale and height
This, whichever form he took – either his monster form or his humanoid form, was the man you fell madly in love with and would do anything for him— even dirtying your hands with blood.
"You doubted me?" You gasped dramatically and playfully at his reaction, arching a brow in amusement. He shakes his head while chuckling, making you join him promptly afterward.
"No. Of course not, dear." He starts, "I didn't think it would be this easy. It went just as you told me, step-by-step and bit-by-bit."
The early events were all a part of your plan. It started with a misunderstanding about being exempted from physical labor— you weren't, never was, and never will be. However, you planted a seed of doubt in them by letting them think that you are, and they fell right through your trap. The rest you predicted in due time, planting more lies to grow their hatred and pettiness towards you until it ultimately led to their demise.
Your thoughts are interrupted by his excellent hands cupping your face, making you look up and into his dark-colored eyes— only to be taken aback at the rare display of raw emotions: a mixture of adoration and devotion swelling in his eyes. Unable to look away, you watch him glance between you and your lips.
"May I?" You nodded, and his lips captured yours immediately, making you melt into him. The little, breathy sounds you made were driving him to his limit. He so desperately wants you. Teeth grazing slightly on your bottom lip as he sucks on it, fingers twined into your hair and clenching into a fist, tugging on it slightly and earning an airy gasp from you.
When you part with your lips, Matsukawa instantly shoves his tongue down onto you and expertly explores your mouth for the first time. You pull him closer, removing the little distance between you and him. You found yourself snaking your arms around his neck as his tentacles wrapped around your legs, effectively trapping you.
Matsukawa hurriedly untangles his tentacles around you, lifting you up in his arms with your legs securely hooked around his waist before carrying you over to a rock near the shoreline. He gingerly places you on the rather large flat surface. Goosebumps ghost on your skin upon contact with the rock's cool and smooth texture as he grinds his slightly opened cloaca against your clothed sex.
You whimper into the kiss before pulling away and looking up into his eyes with uncertainty and desire as he peers down at you. "You do not need to worry. Just relax, leave everything to me… Let me take care of you." He says, brushing away a stray strand of hair from your face and pressing soft kisses all over it.
He starts rubbing your shoulders and arms just as you like it, making you relax and sensitive at his touch. You feel an unfamiliar writhing appendage slipped inside your dress, tugging at the collar and revealing your breasts to your lover while another pair grabbed your ankles, spreading your legs more to him. At the same time, he continues to hump against you.
His lips are now on your neck, kissing, licking, sucking, and marking it with love bites. "Mine." Matsukawa said possessively, his lips trailing down as two tentacles groped your now exposed breasts with their suckers, pinching and tugging your nipples.
A gasp ripped from your throat as two more of his tendrils pried your legs apart by your ankles, making your dress hiked up to your hips. Exposing your soaked underwear to your lover's eyes for the first time. Another large one slithered around your waist, keeping you still, while a smaller one pushed your panties to the side.
Instantly, his mouth attaches itself to your dripping cunt, lapping and sucking like a starved man without a care. So pussy drunk on making sure your pussy is fully coated in his saliva. At the same time, he crudely groans, the vibrations shaking you to your core. His only focus is on you, the way you keen and writhe beneath him. Not caring about how obscenely drenched your pussy gets or how roughly you tug on the curly locks of his, practically living for it. "Such a pretty hole… So delectable." Heat rushes throughout your body as he mumbles praise after praise, making you forget your worries and nervousness. And only focus on the newfound pleasure you are experiencing.
His lips moved to your clit, sucking with his tongue. Flicking and twirling around the sensitive nerve, he plunged two fingers inside your entrance, slowly stretching you out. You were already pulsing around him while you let out unfiltered moans, whimpering as he touched every sensitive spot of your gummy walls. He felt you spasm, warning him of your climax. It only takes a few more thrusts to send you over the edge.
But he doesn't stop. Matsukawa continues ripping through orgasm and orgasm, again and again from you. It wasn't until you squirt from overstimulation that he pulled away reluctantly with what little resolved left in him. His longing eyes peer down to see your eyes half shut, your mouth open with drool on the corner of your lips.
"Don't fall asleep now. I'm not done with you yet."

I hope I have appeased whatever ocean spirit possessed me this summer. Here is the final list of everything I read/watched/listened to/played/etc over the last several months while my entire personality became about the ocean. (Almost - planning on watching Deep Star Six (1989) after I finish writing this post and making dinner!)
The Deep, Nick Cutter | Our Wives Under the Sea, Julia Armfield | “Fear of Depths” + “Fear of Big Things Underwater”, Jacob Geller | Into the Drowning Deep, Mira Grant | Underwater (2020) | r/thalassophobia + r/submechanophobia | The Deep House (2021) | 47 Meters Down (2017) + 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019) | The Toilers of the Sea, Victor Hugo (trans. James Hogarth) | Dark Water, Koji Suzuki (trans. Glynne Walley) | “Fear of the Deep”, Nexpo | Sea Fever (2019) | The Abyss (1989) | Open Water (2003) | From Below, Darcy Coates | Love, Death + Robots, “Bad Traveling” | “The Fog Horn”, Ray Bradbury + “A Descent into the Maelstrom”, Edgar Allen Poe (collected in Stories of the Sea ed. Diana Secker Tesdell) | Subnautica (2018) | Breaking Surface (2020) | They Came From the Ocean, Boris Bacic | The Cave (2005) | Sphere, Michael Crichton + its 1997 adaptation | “Thalassophobia”, Solar Sands | Whalefall, Daniel Kraus | Sanctum (2011) | The Rift (1990) | Leviathan (1989) | Sand, Salt, Blood: An Anthology of Sea Horror, ed. Elle Turpitt | 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne (trans. Mendor T. Brunetti) | Moby-Dick, Herman Melville
So that's 12 books (including 2 anthologies), 13 films, 4 video essays, 2 short stories, 2 subreddits, 1 game, and 1 TV episode.
Top 5 (in no particular order)
Our Wives Under the Sea, Julia Armfield -- beautiful, both in the descriptions of the deep sea and in its depictions of grief. Florence Welch blurbed it and Florence + the Machine takes 3 spots on the playlist so this definitely set the vibes of the summer.
Whalefall, Daniel Kraus -- reminded me of NOPE (2022) and that's a high compliment. It's also about grief but the kind of grief where there should have been a reckoning, and you'll never get that closure. Truly excellent, honestly I still have the library book because I'm not ready to give it back.
Sea Fever (2019) -- obviously owes a lot of its plot to the 1989 slate of ocean horror films coming out that were in imitation of Alien (1979) and attempting to preempt James Cameron's The Abyss (1989), in that it's about a creature from the deep that possesses the crew of a fishing trawler off the west coast of Ireland...but a moody atmosphere, gorgeous cinematography, and mythological inspiration just makes this a good watch.
"Fear of Depths", Jacob Geller -- honestly all the youtube videos on this list are worth it but I'm highlighting this one because I just love it when youtubers go on field trips. Like yes Jacob go stand in that cave and read your script for our entertainment and edification, yesss
The Toilers of the Sea, Victor Hugo -- ok the thing about Hugo is that his novels often carry social messaging - about poverty, class, the nature of justice, investment in cultural hegemony - and Toilers' thematic messaging is just: what the fuck are you doing in the ocean why are you going in there, don't you see how fucked up the ocean is, leave it alone- (...perhaps a more relevant text for billionaires than Les Misérables? XD) Ok, I'm mostly kidding but truly his depictions of the sea are some of my favorite bits of Hugo prose, I really think this book is underrated in the anglophone world.
Please feel free to ask me for more reviews of the other works on the list and I can give more thoughts! For now I'll just say that I had a lot of fun with the cheesy 80s/90s movies (the later ones don't quite carry the same charm but were still pretty fun even if they weren't 'good'), the books are pretty solid with the exception of They Came From the Ocean by Boris Bacic, which is my only 'do not recommend' on the list. (It wasn't well written, didn't use the setting very effectively, and got weirdly homophobic towards the end in a way that was impossible to tease out from a character decision and made me feel kind of weird?) There is also a smaller, slightly less cohesive list for the second part of this series but it gives away the thematic shift so I'll stick to ocean horror for now. This was an interesting summer. I guess I should probably...read something other than ocean horror now. XD

Nine People You'd Like to Get to Know Better
thank you for the tag @missanthropicprinciple! I'm so sorry it took me forever to find this again after my classes ended for the semester.
➠ last song: "Hey Friends" by Ludo. have normally been listening to a few of my spotify playlists but Ludo finally put out a new song so I've been basically just listening to this and also this band Hellripper my partner recommended.
➠ last show/movie: I'll admit I've been on a bit of a Sonic Boom kick again. although I also recently got into a few older sitcoms they do on pluto - 227, Roc, stuff like that. I think the last tv show that was new I followed though was Dirk Gently's Hollistic Detective Agency which I seriously recommend as well. have not really been watching movies recently, I think the last one I watched was the Labyrinth or UHF or something.
➠ currently watching: my partner and I have been keeping up on a few lately to watch together: beavis and butthead (the new ones are actually pretty funny), ICarly, been showing my partner Avatar but we're on the last episode now so we've pushed it off a bit, My Hero Academia, The Great North - definitely recommend for fans of Bob's Burgers.
➠ currently reading: just Dracula Daily for the moment since I've got a pretty hefty oceanography textbook to study soon, plus all my to-read books got accidentally put in storage, although I've been trying to get time to check the used bookstore for some new Dirk Gently or at least the last damn series of unfortunate events book since I never got to finish reading that. also trying to get caught up on my favorite webcomic - Lackadaisy.
➠ current obsession: mostly video games since I've been too sick to do much else lately. but Subnautica 1 & 2 and the Soulsborne games have been my main ones lately, especially Elden Ring and Bloodborne. although Stray, Stranded Deep, and Diablo have been ones I've also been playing, and always Minecraft.

Video Game Writing
51st Post! Our 50th post was the Star Wars one and I didn’t notice. My exams are officially over, and you know what that means. I have 0 knowledge of anything that is not programming that I will need to make a game, and it has been literally years since I last touched Unity.
So, here’s a checklist of things I’ll need to learn:
Unity: I have 3 options for 3D game dev, namely Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot. I could go into detail on why I chose Unity, but that would be boring, so in short, Unity is easy to use and uses C# and is popular with indie devs, UE is more complex, uses C++ and in popular with AAA games, Godot is free and open-source, but it less popular and has much less resources on the internet, and uses C# or GDScript, a Python based custom language. I would use Godot were it not for the fact I have little experience, so I’ll need tutorials and such, and I have experience with Unity.
Music: Ah, the bane of my existence. Okay, I’m overplaying it, composing doesn’t really come easy to me. I can play the keyboard a little, and am decent at playing by ear, but beyond that, no ability at all, and with the theme, that’s gonna be a problem. Hopefully I’ll get everything figured out by then. Sound design too, but I’ll probably be using online libraries or something, creating my own sounds could be a little complicated, but might have to do for certain stuff.
Art: Art is important in games, but not as much as music for mine. I will probably have to use low-poly models and flat textures and stuff. It’s not going to be pretty, but that’s not the focus, as is the case for most indie games.
Writing, our topic of the day. Now, there’s a huge difference between screenwriting or novel writing and video game writing. I, admittedly, haven’t played too many story driven games, so my experience is a little limited, but bear with me. Video games are an interactive medium, so there’s the intricacies that come with that. Okay, let me walk you through this with examples.
Undertale
For once, I think I’ll (painfully) skip Undertale.
Subnautica
Subnautica is mainly a survival-exploration game, and the story is pretty secondary, but I wanna cover all bases. The story is pretty Robinson Crusoey. The protagonist, Ryley Robinson, is a janitor on a spaceship which was attempting a slingshot maneuver with the planet 4546B but it crash landed and the crew escaped in Lifepods. By the time Ryley wakes up, the rest of the crew is dead, and Ryley just happens to land in the only Safe Shallows. The rest of the story is Ryley exploring the Aurora, finding rocket blueprints because Alterra (the company behind the spaceship) does not care enough to rescue him, because greedy corporation, and escaping. When Ryley returns home, he has a debt of 1 trillion credits because every resource he uses from the planet is apparently owned by Alterra. This is an example of a story where the protagonist doesn’t matter much and it’s pretty much the player playing. I will elaborate later.
Alan Wake and Control
Alan Wake and Control are games by Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment. Creators of games like Max Payne and Quantum Break, they’re known for narrative driven video games. Alan Wake’s story is split into episodes, a sound decision imo considering the storytelling style.. There are “Previously On…” sections for each episode so people who left off somewhere in between are not completely lost, but the game is relatively short, so I don’t think it was that necessary. I don’t want to spoil too much, so I’ll only get into the premise and a bit of the beginning for each game.
Alan Wake is a bestselling author going through a writer’s block. He and his wife, who has a fear of the dark, go to Bright Falls for a vacation. His wife disappeared/is kidnapped and Alan thinks she fell into the lake on which their cottage is on and jumps in, and it fades to black. Alan wakes up and he’s somehow crashed a car. He goes into the town to get help and has to fight through people covered in a weird dark mist. Oh right, he had a dream in the prologue section that taught him how to fight them, which is by shining a light on them for some time until the mist is gone and bam-bam. On the way he also finds manuscripts laying around the path which appear to be telling the future. I’m sure you can piece together what is going on with what I’ve told you so far.
Alan Wake’s story is simple, but gripping, which is probably the best kind of story. I probably would have finished it in one sitting were I not terrible at combat. It takes a pretty common fear and turns it into a villain (huh, I see the Stephen King inspiration now). The idea of the story being deterministic and physically pre-written is pretty novel. There are also these random TV sets lying around, which play this show called “Night Springs”. Night Springs appears to be a TV Show that tackles supernatural topics. They talk about the Many-Worlds interpretation, and the episode where they do is uh disturbing to say the least, as is the case with most of them, I guess, and a man who killed someone who seems to have identical fingerprints, which I think is referenced in a quest in Control? I can’t find anyone who also thought so, so I might be tinfoil hatting. The other collectible is uh… coffee thermoses..? They appear to have no significance, is it a lazy addition to pad out playtime? I have no idea. It’s referenced however in Control, with a document by the FBC saying that Alan Wake was seen collecting them and they seem to always dispense “refreshing and strong” coffee no matter what was poured in. I don’t think Alan drank any of it because he can’t run. Seriously. He is winded after no less than four seconds. Seriously dude, I know you’re a writer and all, but I haven’t run a meter in 3 years and I can run for longer.
Okay, that went on for long enough, so let’s move onto Control. Control is a new weird action adventure game also developed by Remedy. Jesse Faden is from a town called Ordinary (I know, ironic) where an Altered World Event or AWE for short occurred and she was separated from her brother, Dylan. Aided by this supernatural entity residing in her mind, she spends the rest of her life investigating what had happened to try and find her brother, and she’s led to the Federal Bureau of Control, deciding to take up the job of the janitor’s assistant. Things don’t go exactly to plan and she ends up Director. And as it turns out, that a resonance-based life form is infesting people and making them do their bidding. The rest of the game is Jesse exploring the Oldest House, the name for the FBC’s headquarters, assisting the Bureau while trying to find her brother. Control has a weird system for collectibles. There are documents, split into Research, Case Files and Correspondence. Most of them are in various levels of censorship, ranging from
Tumblr media
Whatever this is to
Tumblr media
This.
The censorship is perplexing in most cases, like in the former, like what the heck happened there that almost everything had to be censored, and in the latter one, the words seem obvious, but is it actually what I think it is or is it somehow more sinister..?
Control is heavily inspired by the SCP (Special Containment Procedures; backronym: Secure. Contain. Protect) Foundation uh mythos? The SCP Foundation deals with containing and documenting paranatural objects, locations, even individuals. The FBC also does that, they send out operatives to locate Altered Objects or Objects of Powers(OoPs). Altered Objects are just plain supernatural objects. OoPs however, can allow a parautilitarian to bind with it and gain powers, like Jesse does. This is one place I think Control excels at. Control does not spoon feed you the info for each AO, and you have to go searching for the documents on it.
Ah, damn, I don’t have the time to go into the rest of the things I wanted to talk about, so I’m going to put this on the back burner. The next few are going to be pretty low effort :P since you know, travelling laptopless. Ciao!

Watching First Kill w/ my partner
We're at Episode 5 rn and tl;dr off the bat, we're enjoying it for all the wrong reasons. Here's some notes, thoughts, and other things we did while watching
EP. 1:
The Zombie Song plays in the intro and my partner has an IMMEDIATE VISCERAL reaction like a flashbang has just gone off and doesn't recover until the first episode ended
16 FUCKING SONGS IN ONE 40 MINUTE EPISODE
Sound mixing is Not Good, whoever did audio mixing dropped the ball so hard
Invest more in your production and editing than in your licensing budget LMAO
Ben is the best character so far, the balls it takes to A. go get your man and B. turn that bottle right at Cal
Elinor is also great I love this evil bitch
EP. 2-4:
Thankfully episode 1 was the worst one
LESS SONGS THIS TIME POG
Please play more than the same Subnautica Lost River theme song over and over again though pls
Editing is ATROCIOUS, the ordering of scenes is just WRONG sometimes, this is a masterclass in truly terrible editing
This show gets better as it goes on bc the side characters get so much more enjoyable
Cal and Juliette's whole THING just isn't working right now, they act the same in almost every scene and other than dry humping in the woods, the chemistry just isn't really there
HOWEVER
I want Cal's mom and Juliette's mom to make out more than I want Cal and Juliette, these women can GET IT
The only thing that changes that is Margot and Sebastian are actually adorable and I love this straight romance more than the gay one the show's about which NEVER happens
Margot is the best character hands down and has the only genuinely REALLY good scene in the show telling Juliette it's ok that she didn't kill (which was actually surprising and nice to see) and talking about how her family hates her for doing what she wanted, not what was expected of her
Elinor and Oliver are duking it out for who can chew the scene more and I'm living for it, definitely tied for 2nd fav
Evil grandma lets go
Apollo and Theseus suck their dick measuring contest is a snooze fest and their characters flip back and forth between respecting and hating each other faster than I can skip through their scenes LMAO
In total, we count 6 cringes, but the total is 5 to subtract the one really good scene with Margot
BONUS ROUND: BETS
We made bets with each other before starting 2-4 and here's the results of them
VIC BETS (my bets for them that they'll viscerally react to)
the zombie song will play again and flashbang them yet again Was IMMEDIATELY proven correct and happened for every episode
a song from 2008 not yet but hopefully
late 2000s reference unfortunately no but I want it
bad audio this was a given lmao
(their bets for them)
anime reference no but there's still hope
teen wolf reference this whole show feels a bit but no direct reference yet
the song flesh by simon curtis will play ODDLY specific but no
tumblr joke please give this to me show
Bets for Me!
witch (good) it was and she's hot and that ring was metal as fuck
world building bad (annoyed) surprisingly not too annoyed
editing bad (screaming) oh I had a whole rant
hunters are used badly other than theo and apollo not too bad, but the fact they're less functional than the vampire family is great
