With me finally going back and revisiting some of my old OCs, at least briefly, it’s making me finally want to go back and revisit Sugar Cane Cookie

But also I’ve changed things around now, and I feel like it might make things confusing

Like first off, while the character is Sugar Cane Cookie, it’s not the same Sugar Cane Cookie as the one I designed before

This new Sugar Cane is instead the old Sugar Cane’s grandpa, though they both keep the same names. It’s just that the one depicted above is now Sugar Cane II

Also Sugar Cane II’s mom is named Cane Sugar, so the family line goes: Sugar Cane, Cane Sugar, Sugar Cane II

Also I don’t know if I’m keeping Sugar Cane as having a previous relationship with Dark Cacao/being Dark Choco’s second parent. But I am at least going to keep allusions to the possibility, with the fact that Sugar Cane did spend some time there when he was younger, and that the majority of his children have darker hair and dough than him despite them not having an obvious other parent

It’s mostly because I don’t really know how to work their relationship in. I mean, Sugar Cane has at least 3 kids whom all live with him, and Dark Choco would be at least a few years younger than his youngest. So like, did Dark Cacao and Sugar Cane have this nasty divorce that resulted in Sugar Cane getting custody of all his kids except his youngest? And how would the whole situation with Dark Choco work?

I personally like to keep things as canon compliant as possible when it comes to my OCs, and so since there’s never any mention of Dark Choco having another parent around, I’d have to do something to make them disappear. But Sugar Cane being alive and well, while also having several kids that are presumably Dark Choco’s siblings he presumably doesn’t know about would make things very complicated to explain

But at the same time I don’t outright dislike the idea of Sugar Cane and Dark Cacao having a previous that turned sour, and I feel like having Sugar Cane’s partner be some random Dark Cacaoian cookie would just be kind of boring in my eyes

I don’t know, Sugar Cane is a whole mess and this relationship is why I keep shelving this family. I need to stop myself from going down these rabbit holes and just make these guys. Or maybe I should wait for the next update to see if there’s anything I can work with there

What was I talking about originally? I got carried away and I think I lost the plot. Sorry about that, I think I’ll just end it here

The Best Vegan Sugar Cookies

All right, I finally figured out a design for Sugar Cane, this is them

Yeah, very different from the original concept

Right now I’m saying this is Sugar Cane’s younger design, around their teens, when they’re living on their family’s sugarcane farm. Because I like the concept of older Sugar Cane, as well as their kid Molasses, but I need to figure out how to do that, and I just want to have some design of them at this point. Current day Sugar Cane is probably in their 50s or so

I was able to keep some original design elements, mainly the sugar cane on their back (they’re supposed to be carrying it on their back but I’m not sure how obvious that is), the big pants, as well as the red eyes, but unfortunately I couldn’t keep the white hair I had planned, it conflicted too much with the white eye lines. So I made it a pale yellow instead

I put in the leaves in the hair since the leaves seem to be a noticeable part of the plant, and I wanted to incorporate it more

I was having a lot of trouble with the colors though, I had to ask a Discord server I’m in for plenty of advice, but I think it looks good now

Alright, well back to the character. I’m gonna be honest, I feel like it’s a weird placement to put the design in the middle, but I also don’t want to save it for last. I don’t know, let’s just move on

Truth be told, I don’t…have a lot on Sugar Cane’s personality. That’s always been the least of my concerns regarding them. I have vibes but I don’t know how to put them into words. But in this era they’re dissatisfied with their life on the farm, dreaming of going out into the world, which they later do

They’re also proficient in the wielding of cane knives, which are used to cut down sugarcane, and that’s going to be their main choice of weapon going forward. I discovered that they exist and I thought that they should probably be used for the character that’s literally sugarcane. Maybe they aren’t as effective as machetes, which are another thing used to cut sugarcane, but I don’t know how effective cane knives are in combat. I’m giving Sugar Cane two of them because it looks cool to me. They started out using them just to cut down sugarcane, since one of their main jobs on the farm is cutting them down, but they also learned to incorporate into combat

And also, while for now Sugar Cane isn’t Dark Choco’s second parent (I may go back to it later), I am still going to include slight references, like the fact that Sugar Cane did have a stint in the Dark Cacao Kingdom, and that Molasses very much looks like they could be related to Dark Choco (still haven’t decided Molasses’s gender)

Hmm, I feel like I had something else to mention, but I don’t remember what

Well then I guess that’s the end of this post about Sugar Cane. Hopefully I’ll manage to draw them in the future
