I really like this little Zutara crumb from the very end of the Sun Warriors episode…
At first, Zuko is angry and irritated because everyone is making fun of the new firebending forms. Just contrast:
Zuko @ Sokka: 😡
Tumblr media
Zuko @ Katara: 🥺
Tumblr media
The way his face instantly softens when she starts talking means so much to me. She’s also making fun of him. His whole demeanor changes as soon as she starts speaking. It’s literally just the sound of her voice talking to him that makes him soften up.

Sun Warrior!Azula completes her final trial to become an official member of the protectors of the dragons. She has been tutored by the chief himself, who is a strict but spiritual man who doesn't care that she is royalty.
The Gaang is here to cheer her on! Zuko is incredibly proud of his sister and glad to see that his idea worked.

Lu Ten lives. Iroh, in a last ditch effort, took him to the Sun Warriors, because he knew the Masters could help his son. Lu Ten survived, but Iroh had to leave him there.
(Also, note that Lu Ten and Zuko are known as Angi' Chosen, I'll elaborate later)
Cue like...seven? I think? years later, Aang and Zuko arrive. everyone is acting weird around Zuko, but he just doesn't fucking get it, until his cousin, who Zuko had thought was dead, walks from deep within the temple.
Lu Ten has lived among the Masters for years, bathing in their flame and dressed in their scale, and he's alive.
Zuko stands there, for a while, before, infront of Aang, the Sun Warriors, even the Dragon's, he burst into tears.
Lu Ten comforts him, and in the end, the boys get the Masters blessing, but Lu Ten stays.
Zuko says goodbye to his cousin, thinking he won't see him until after they defeat the Firelord. Then, at the last moment, as Azula charges lightning, pointing toward Angi's Chosen, two great beasts, a mess of blue and red and flame and storm and fire itself, decend opon the battle field.

Iroh: *learns to firebend without hatred and aggression after being found worthy by the dragons*
Also Iroh: *Commits imperialistic violence against the Earth Kingdom for decades culminating in a 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se*
Truly an example of how firebending can be used without hatred or aggression and how he proves himself worthy to the dragons.

The best portrayal of native american cultures I've ever seen is "The Emperor's New Groove" and I'm not even joking. It's not particularly good, but it is better than anything else. Better than "Pocahontas", better than "El Dorado", and certainly better than the "Sun Warriors" from Avatar, come to think of it, better than the Na'avi from the other Avatar as well Only in "The Emperor's New Groove" you see a story about native americans in which they are not being conquered or discovered by other people. They have their own story with their own lives, it's something so simple and yet I have never seen a similar portrayal anywhere else

found an atla picrew maker, so now you guys get to be forced to see my avatar oc:
Tumblr media
this is inti, the next fire avatar. he’s one of the sun warriors, but when he starts having visions of his past life (the avatar after korra) getting assassinated, he leaves his home to go master the four elements and gets tangled up in a bunch of conspiracies and the atla space race.
his team avatar includes a chaotic punk airbender, a waterbending slacker with a heart of gold, and an earthbender caught between her parent’s traditions and wanting to conform to the rapidly changing world. inti is a nervous but curious little dude who misses his home but is also fascinated by the whole wide world (it’s going to crush him). he thinks it would be nice if his avatar mentor wasn’t a five year old who’s pissed about dying before getting to do anything cool, though.

Hear me out Zuko has a pet dragon in LoK and it had to have come from the Sun Warrior egg because all other dragons are extinct. The only problem is that Zuko left the egg with them when he left. I think that the warriors gave it to him as a gift when he and Sokka (fight me) got married as a wedding present.

Just rewatched ATLA and gods above that show is a love letter to character design and world building. I grew up loving it but as an adult and as an artist it means so much more to see the sheer love and care put into every single detail of the show.
My Zuko Headcanons: he is blind in one eye, he's also missing most of his ear on his left side, I draw his scar larger since he was much smaller than that big ole fireball and it just makes more sense to me, also cuz theres alot of like...smoothening of scars that happens to characters like him which I dont like. Also my Zuko is trans and no one can tell me anything.
Also not to be mushy but being a white indigenous person who was disconnected from my culture when generations of women in my family were abducted and sent to Canadian residential schools, watching such beautiful strong indigenous characters is so uplifting and heartwarming. And being disabled, the way they portray and empower disabled people without ever being condescending is so fucking important.
Annyyywaayyy srry for being emo
TLDR; I'm on a huge ATLA kick rn, here's my expression study of Zuko in different nations traditional clothing, royal, noble, and otherwise. I hope you likeeeee.

🌊The Water-Bending Sun Warrior☀
Zuko X Reader
[Prologue]
An idea I guess? Idk. Where Zuko and Aang stay a bit longer.
Tumblr media
"Apá, tell me about Mamá.", you asked, resting on the pillows near your father.
"Again?", he says, the jewels he wore glinting from the lighting of the fire nearby as he turned to face you.
"Please?", you pleaded.
He sighs and gets comfortable. "Oh alright."
As soon as he agrees, you get closer and wait eagerly.
"As you know, our people were blessed by the Sun God and the dragons our teachers.", he starts, looking into the crackling fire.
You nod, waiting.
"However, your mother was blessed by the Moon, she came from a place of ice and snow. Her teachers were the push and pull that danced, the Koi.", he says fondly, turning his gaze up to the moon.
"Can you tell me how you met?", you whisper.
"It was a day she was lost. Telling our people that the moon had led her until it no longer could.", he said, looking over at you and tucking a stray hair away from your face. "After we got married, she told me that she asked the Moon to lead her to the one that would dance eternally with her."
"Just like the push and pull?", you mumbled.
"Just like the push and pull.", he said softly.
"And then?", you asked, eyes drooping.
"Then we had you on the day of an eclipse caused by the spirits.", he said, pulling a blanket over you. "It was not a natural one, the sun and moon met to see your birth."
Your eyes couldn't stay open for much longer and you yawned. Sleep taking over you.
"And as the moon left, your mother went with."

Why do you think the Sun warriors stay hiding???
I mean Zuko says they haven’t been around for thousands of years i think i don’t remember but i don’t think it was because the hundred year war started, i don’t think they went hiding because of Sozin
Do you think they will come back from hiding because of Zuko’s reign or they’ll keep on hiding???
Do you think a sun warrior princess could marry zuko lol since there are fan conversations of an arranged marriage ( if we exclude mai) for Zuko i think a sun warrior princess is the best option since she is fire nation and a princess but then again will the sun warriors want to have an alliance with the fire nation since they’ve been hiding for thousands of years and they seem to be doing just fine so ¿?? idk, what do you think ???
Why do I think the sun warriors are still in hiding? Simple. The dragons were hunted down for years by the Fire Nation thanks to Sozin. Even if the Fire Nation now has a better ruler in Zuko, someone who doesn't want any harm to come to the sun warriors and the last remaining dragons, I can't say I blame them for not wanting the rest of the world to know about their existence.
As far as Zuko getting married to a sun warrior princess, idk about that one, but it would be interesting to make a fic out of that idea.

Iroh is known in the Earth Kingdom as The Dragon of the West. Dragon is a title you get for slaying a dragon, with Zuko stating that Iroh killed the last dragon long before he was born (meaning this happened before Iroh's redemption arc.)
In the same episode we also learn that, instead of killing the last dragons, Iroh learned the true meaning of Firebending.
So if i interprete this correctly, Iroh learned that fire was life and then used that knowledge to wage war against the Earth Kingdom, culminating with the siege of Ba Sing Se?
Because if he did that, that is honestly very fucked up.
