Algol and Perseus

The rescuer and the demon

Algol is the beta star of the constellation Perseus, currently sitting at 26° Taurus, known as “the demon star” or "blinking demon", its name comes from the arabic Al Ghul meaning "the demon". To hellenistic astrology it represents Medusa’s head, which Perseus holds on one hand, while on the other he has his sword. An important characteristic of Algol is that its glow has a regular variation, it loses half of its brightness for hours and then it gains back. It was believed by astrologers to be an eclipsing star, which means that another non-visible body would be orbiting it and therefore eclipsing its light from time to time. They were half right, because it was later discovered to be an eclipsing star system, and that Algol was actually 3 stars, just like the Gorgon sisters are three: the imortals Stheno and Euryale, and the mortal Medusa. This is such a hallmark of Algol that it gave its name to its class of eclipsing variable: Algol variable.

Eclipses are associated with death, basically because light in astrology is life-giving, and loss of light is death. But it’s interesting that it's frequently associated with the "demonic", capital punishment and decapitation. Algol is telling a story about the decapitation of a “demon”, just like the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) do in the Jyotish tradition when they cause eclipses. Ptolemy only tells us that the constellation of Perseus is like Jupiter and Saturn. Although Robson agrees with Agrippa about Algol specifically being of the nature of Saturn-Jupiter, and “the most evil star in the heavens”, causing a lot of fear whenever we see it activated in a chart. But I’m not here to scare anybody, don’t worry. It’s difficult, but I’ll try to lighten this up, because the most overlooked fact about Algol is that it also protects and can make revolutions and revolutionary heros.

Eletrocution or electrical problems are an issue with eclipses and apparently also eclipsing star-systems like Algol. This is noted by Christopher Warnock about his Algol talismans:

"I have had multiple reports and have myself experienced Algol’s tendency to cause electrical and electronic interference when the talisman is first used.  I mysteriously lost my Internet connection for an hour and my electronic thermostat died.  One user had his entire block lose power.  Less frequently but still regularly clients have reported that while wearing their Algol talisman, “weird” or “freaky” people took one look at them and fled." (Christopher Warnock - Fixed star, Sign and Constellation Magic)

Other one of its proeminent themes is vengeance, or the dichotomy of justice vs vengeance, but the effect of reflecting back evil that's sent towards its direction, or of ending curses describes it better in my opinion. About the images of the fixed Behenian stars, Agrippa says that:

“Under Caput Algol, they made an image whose figure was the head of a man with a long beard, having a bloody neck. This brought the good outcome of petitions, gave the bearer boldness and nobility, preserved members of the body from injury, helped against sorceries, and reflected evil attempts and evil incantations from enemies”. This protection side of the star is illustrated by the story of the champion Perseus not just decapitating the demon but using its head to free Andromeda from her chains and saving her and her city from another monster, and then Athena herself starts using the head of Medusa as a symbol on her shield. As established, this is a star of the nature of Jupiter and Saturn. The nature of Saturn is evidenced even by the names given to the star: demon, cacodaemon, which is also the greek name for the 12th house. Imprisonment, monstruosity and madness are clearly the most important Saturn and 12th house themes. But Algol is a protective star, particularly in astrological magic, although I'll show how this kinda manifests in nativities as well. Algol is mainly of a jupiterian nature, that's why it does liberates. The head is an evil daemon but also a protection amulet. This is interesting regarding the eclipsing factor and the similarity of the significations with the Jyotish Rahu and Ketu. In western astrology the nodes are considered to have effects like Jupiter and Saturn, and the topic of imprisonment-liberation is explored in the dynamic of the two*.

With the new interpretations of the Medusa myth, some astrologers say that Algol can be about "female rage" or "dark feminine", or "feminine jealousy" etc. I think this is one of the stories that people mix the astrological meaning with the morality of the greek myth associated with the star the most. The greek myth is not really the star and the star is not the greek myth. In my opinion, you always must take into consideration that some things can be just the way the greeks or romans viewed a certain theme, and of course they would put a violated woman to represent a monster on a mindless vendetta, and it's not meant to be complimentary. I believe that's already way beyond Algol's effects, it could be just their misogyny projected onto the stars. I can think of examples where I can see that kind of story taking place, but that doesn’t mean that the star is about those things, but just that this is one possibility because we live in patriarchy and things around women's issues can get ugly in an Algol manner. The star can be about capital punishment, monstruosity, madness, captivity, violation, injustice, vengeance, evil daemonic influences etc, but it's not really about cishet women. So, even though I’m also using the greek myth here, I’m not giving the most importance to the detail that it is a story about a woman receiving unfair punishment and that there's a lack of comradery between women, because I'm interested in the star beyond what greeks and romans said, because the stars can’t be represented by just one hegemonic narrative. A lot of other cultures had their different stories about Algol, the Medusa one isn’t special to the point that we could assume every detail about it, even its moral issues (which are also in this case suffering a bit from anachronism), has meaning for the star associated.

Perseus is a spring time constellation very near the bull (taurus), and that may sound too nice for such a scary one. But in babylonian astrology, the stars of Perseus actually formed the constellation of the Old Man, who also held a decapitated head and a rod instead of a sword. Of it, Gavin White has an interesting perspective to share:

“At this time of natural abundance, the earth was thought to ‘open up’ in order to yield her bounty, but to the archaic mind this opening up was accompanied by a host of dangers, chief of which was the potential pollution from the dead who could gain easy access to the upper worlds at this pivotal time. In light of this belief, I would suggest that the Old Man, with his wand and prophylactic head, is banishing the ghosts of the old year and driving them back to the underworld.”

There's a lot of examples of charts for literal decapitation or capital punishment, injuries to the head or neck area as obvious manifestations of the star: The most famous is probably the catholic Saint George, who is said to have been executed by decapitation on April 23 back when that was the time of year when the Sun would conjunct Algol, and he later became associated with the constellation. Back then, Algol was at 2° Taurus. Gianni Versace, who had Algol on the descendant, famously made Medusa the logo of his brand and also died with a bullet to the head. Freud had Mercury with Algol, his 8th house ruler, and he died with throat cancer. Nick Yarris, who spent two decades on death row after he was wrongfully convicted of murder, has the Sun with Algol. Patrick Henry had Jupiter, and he was a murderer whose case influenced the abolition of the death penalty in France, which was done by the method of guillotine until its abolition. He was defended by Robert Badinter, who was an activist against the death penalty and could sucessfully propose its abolition in 1981. Badinter has Jupiter with the alpha of Andromeda in the first house. France has a thing with decapitation, some of the charts for its republics have either Algol or Mirfak activated, the alpha star of Perseus.

Algol and Madness

But I want to talk about Algol's special relationship with madness, in the demonized/criminalized sense, because after all, "the demon" is unwanted, it frequently represents the marginalized and their opression. In Brazil's history, especially during the military dictatorship organized and imposed by usamerican capitalist imperialism, asylums imprisoned and tortured mainly black people, women and queer people. Some asylums got so overwhelmed that they became concentration camps, like the famous case of Hospital Colônia in Barbacena, known as the Brazilian Holocaust case, where people died by the thousands from starvation, hypothermia, anemia, STI's, untreated diseases from the lack of hygiene etc. Some important psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts have Algol activated by some planet. Freud has Mercury, Fritz Perls has Jupiter, David Healy, who literally has a book titled "The Decapitation of Care", has Venus. But what's more interesting to me is the protection element of Algol in some cases and its role in mad liberation movements, after all, Perseus is a liberator. Algol shows up in very important people in the pysch field who question medical power and have antipsych views, and on important events of the psychiatric reform.

Hospital Colônia de Barbacena - MG

Franco Basaglia, the main responsible for the dismantling of psychiatric hospitals and for the psychiatric reform in Italy and for inspiring the one in Brazil, had the Moon with Algol in the 10th house, representing his deeds, while ruling the 12th. In Italy, the Law 180 (Basaglia Law), the Psychiatric Reform law that determined the progressive extinction of asylums throughout the italian territory, was sanctioned with the Sun on Algol. In Brazil, on May 18, 1987, the exact day of the year that the Sun conjuncts Algol, a meeting of mental health workers at a conference was the major milestone for Brazilian health reform and the anti-asylum movement. And since that event, May 18th has become our national anti-asylum movement day, and it becomes more and more culturally relevant as a day to discuss psychiatric reform and the fight to guarantee the rights and autonomy of mental patients.

An important activist, Austregésilo Bueno, born with the Sun with Algol, survivor of compulsory hospitalization in asylums in the 70s, wrote a book "Canto dos Malditos" about his horrible experiences as a psychiatric patient treated with eletroshock therapy (another one of Algol's effects). He had his book adapted to film and his story played by the actor Rodrigo Santoro, who has Algol on the Ascendant. The name of the film is Brainstorm in English, but I find the original "Bicho de Sete Cabeças" much more compelling. It's a truly devastating story, and it's the story of thousands unfortunately.

One thing about Saturn and madness is the recurring idea of wearing masks. Masks and theatre have always been associated with Saturn. Saturnalia was a roman festival where all the roles switched, where kings pretended to be fools and fools pretended to be kings. In modern astrology Saturn ended up associated a lot with a raw and harsh reality, disregarding the most mystical and unreal characteristics of Saturn that have always been present. Although life, reality, identity and reason are always a performance, we're always wearing a mask and performing life. There's a point in the movie "Bicho de Sete Cabeças" when the protagonist is having a difficult time on his first days of being an inmate, he's fighting too much against the forced treatment and expressing too much unsatisfaction with his imprisonment, thus getting even more forcebly medicated and punished by the staff. At this point one of the older inmates shares an important advice with him:

"You have to pretend, who in this world doesn't pretend? You have to say that you're in a good mood, you have to say that you're not hungry, you have to say that you don't have a toothache, you have to say that you're not afraid, otherwise you can't do it, you can't do it. No doctor ever told me that hunger and poverty can lead to mental disorders, but those who don't eat become nervous, those who don't eat and see their family go without eating can go crazy, a discontentment can lead to madness, a death in the family, the abandonment of the great love. We even need to pretend to be insane when we're insane, pretend to be a poet when we're a poet."

It's a powerful speech about the farce of medicine's ownership over the subject of madness, the farce of reason and that it must subjugate or dominate madness. Pretending and acting out the platonic ideal behavior at all situations under all circumstances, as if it's normal, that's the only way anyone is seen as sane.

Bicho de Sete Cabeças (2000)

Another important date in brazillian history is the 13th of May 1888, the day of the passing of the law that abolished slavery, which also had Algol activated by the Sun. This was obviously not the definite end of slavery and not the end of the struggle of black brazilians, just like the Basaglia Law didn't mean mad liberation, but I'm just demonstrating how powerful Algol is to protect from evil and put an end to injustice in an official and legislative manner. Like Saint George defeating the dragon, Perseus defeats a monster that is impossible to defeat, the "impossible victory" and liberation is recurrent in the stories linked to it. Systemic opression and injustices a lot of times seem like impossible problems, it becomes harder and harder to imagine a world where they don't exist, but Algol events revolutionize the impossible.

"The important thing is that we have proven that the impossible becomes possible. Ten, fifteen, twenty years ago it was unthinkable that a mental hospital could be destroyed. Maybe mental hospitals will return to being closed and more closed than before, I don't know, but in any case we have demonstrated that the mad can be cared for in another way, and testimony is fundamental. I don't think that the fact that an action manages to energize itself means that it has been won. The important point is another, it is that now we know what can be done." An important honorable mention should be made to Carlos Marighella, a guerrilheiro in the resistance of the brazilian military dictatorship who was executed before he could see our democratization. He had Mars with Algol.

"The urban guerrilheiro is an implacable enemy of the government and inflicts systematic harm on authorities and men who dominate and exercise power. The main work of the urban guerrilheiro is to distract, tire and demoralize the military, the military dictatorship and repressive forces, and also attack and destroy the wealth of north americans, foreign managers, and the Brazilian upper class. But the fundamental and decisive characteristic of the urban guerrilheiro is that he is a man who fights with weapons; given this condition, there is little chance that he will be able to pursue his normal profession for a long time or the reference of the class struggle, since it is inevitable and necessarily expected, the armed conflict of urban guerrilla against the essential objectives: A. The physical extermination of the leaders and assistants of the armed forces and the police. B. The expropriation of government resources and those who belong to the big capitalists, landowners, and imperialists, with small expropriations used to maintain the individual urban guerrilheiro and large expropriations for the support of the same revolution. Algol in Cannes

I’ve said here before how much I love Bacurau. The movie premiered in Cannes, on May 15, 2019, at 10 pm**. This is a chart full of fixed stars, with the Sun with Algol in the 6th house. You'll find in the film the Algol classic of extreme injustice being overcome. But one curious thing is that the Cannes Film Festival always happens around the same time of year when the Sun is at the last degrees of Taurus and beginning of Gemini, making a lot of the movies premiered at Cannes have Algol activated. And it shows. It’s a great opportunity to watch how varied the Algol themes can be. On that same year of 2019, they had: THE DEAD DON’T DIE by JIM JARMUSCH, a pretty obvious Algol movie about zombies, whom you defeat by cutting off the head, of course; LES MISÉRABLES by LADJ LY, inspired by a real-life event of police violence that inspired the 2005 riots in Paris, it seems to have a very radicalized discourse about raging against violent injustices; ATLANTIQUE (ATLANTICS) by MATI DIOP has dead unpaid workers coming back as spirits possessing their city’s inhabitants to take vengeance on the tycoon who withheld their payment; LITTLE JOE by JESSICA HAUSNER is a film about a lab created flower that alters people's behavior in strange ways, and these last two kinda have the feeling of that "spring danger" Gavin White talks about. DOLOR Y GLORIA (PAIN AND GLORY) by PEDRO ALMODÓVAR has Antonio Banderas as the protagonist who develops dysphagia, caused by a caucified growth in his neck. Etc. And these are all just some of the 2019 films. I haven't watched most of them, but you can always look for the films which had their first screenings around 14-20 of May and they'll be rich in Algol content.

Hey y'all, I'm back with another reading! This time, I'm going to be looking into collective readings for the four elemental groups of the zodiac over this full moon period.

these are written predominantly for the *rising* signs but they are also intuitively "channeled" enough that they should work for any dominant energy you have! aries: a much anticipated mars-uranus conjunction occurs with algol in your 2nd house this week. yes, it's scary vibes. so the warnings: beware head injuries, concussions, etc. your money may be at risk, or you may find yourself sacrificing some important values. on the bright side the energies can be strangely empowering from you. don't go starting trouble, but don't shy away from a fight (metaphorically. do very much avoid physical violence under this transit.) justice is on your side.

taurus: for you as for many, the mars-uranus conjunction is the major focal point of the week. in this scenario, do you see yourself as medusa or as perseus? algol is, probably quite unjustly, considered the "demon" star. it is the eye of medusa, gleaming furiously from her severed head. you may be victorious, you may be filled with righteous anger. it is important to behave in a way that keeps you safe, but otherwise, act accordingly.

gemini: while others tremble in fear waiting for the mars-uranus conjunction to come and pass, that transit occurs mainly behind the scenes for you, in the back of your mind or in dreams. however, do be very careful in/about isolated places like hospitals, prisons, etc. much more likely noticeable to you is the subsequent ingress of mars into your sign. it will likely be refreshing, invigorating, and energized from that conjunction.

political astrology: how astrology explains trump's assassination attempt + predictions.

As was widely talked about, Trump had a recent attempt on his life. While this is unfortunately not unheard of while sitting in the position of President of the United States of America, we can figure out why this happens using astrology.

According to @astrologyking-blog, Trump has his midheaven almost exactly conjunct the fixed "demon star" Algol, indicating potential murder, sudden death or beheading. He also says Uranus aligns with Algol for most of 2024; Algol’s association with hidden or suppressed issues might be brought to light through Uranus' illuminating energy. This can lead to significant personal revelations or changes in public understanding, like with his presidential campaign and his reputation (10th H). With this Uranus in Taurus transit, we'll see large changes and instability with his public reputation and career. Somewhat unfortunate for someone with a presidential campagin.

Saturn in pisces is currently transiting his 7th house, which can indicate legal issues, issues or restrictions in close business partnerships and relationships, everything that is of importance to a man like himself. There may be neptunian qualities to his one-to-one partnerships, meaning deception or disillusionment.

Transit mars is currently conjunct his natal sun, meaning he might come out of this with a stronger determination to save or clean his public image and reputation. We will probably see more attempts to reach the masses through speeches, communication on social media platforms, interviews. This communication will be more friendly and light-hearted in nature, most likely in an attempt to humanize him after his assassination attempt.

Transit mercury and Sun will be in his first house in Virgo a week from now, the day of the presidential debate with Kamala Harris, which is advantageous for something like a national "argument". It will be held in Philadelphia, where Trump attended university. I anticipate he will be at ease, as it is a familiar place to him (transit moon conj natal 4th H moon). He will probably be within close proximity to his family or maybe take press photos with his family that day, specifically women figures.

He might look really put together and have planned concise words for the debate, again in attempts to "rebrand". On the flip end, he could also be extremely anxious, and visibly so. (maybe we'll see a lot of bathroom breaks, stuttering, sweating).

Overall, this presidential election is very interesting considering its unique circumstances and precedent. Hopefully it doesn't get too crazy..

SIDEREAL ASTRO OBERSERVATIONS - FAME EDITION.

Probably the first of many, i just wanted to do a deep dive on all the different placements of the stars through sidereal, and there was something that I noticed that I wanted to share.

Magha Moons - There emotional sector draws people in with the power to ignite hope into others and their desires. Their like the wish fairy lol. But their auras replenish and nourish others in the act of performance and their ability to let go when they perform. There energy is high and can draw in fame that lasts even after they die. For most of them it could be that one big moment brings them to a higher level of fame and it goes unexpected.

Magha Suns - Very rich, high in energy. They are the shapeshifters of the zodiac but also they have a powerful aura and what they come to do enriches them and families all across the board. Their heros to their family and community and their sun being here brings them attention that shocks the world. It has an ability to uprise any fellow individual in to a long-lasting stance of fame due to their desirability and their connection to the culture.

Pushya Suns - Pushya suns have a controlling force that can be seen and heard from dimensions aloud. These individuals could be known around the world, but it is their ability to be seen in their youth, their depth, and their controlling, compelling nature that ignites attention into the room even after death. There abilities to hold a powerful essence, similar to sidereal leos, is unheard of for some, so this can give them the attention that most don't notice until well into their career. Hi! I saw over your blog and, well, you seem to know about this and also seem kind, so I'm recently getting into astrology, and my friend scared me saying that having the top four (Sun, Moon, RIsing, Mercury) be the same is a lot of bad luck....is that true? It's all taurus,.. I dunno much about astrology yet, but that's bad, right? I've also generally have really bad luck all the time except in spring season

Hi! Me, as an astrologer who believes there are good and bad placements, I don't consider having Taurus placements that bad. That is because Taurus is ruled by Venus, the benefic and the positive planet which represents the area of our life that works in our favor. So, how can having Taurus placements be that bad? The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so there's a nurturing aspect to the Taurus sign. Taurus is a hedonistic sign which likes to be in a present moment and have fun in this same present moment, since it's a fixed sign.

For your Taurus Rising, you should look for your natal Venus, which is your chart ruler, to see how your life is going to play out. If your chart ruler (Venus) is in its own sign (Taurus or Libra) or is exalted (Pisces), then it can say something positive about your life, because Venus functions very well in Taurus/Libra/Pisces. But if your chart ruler (Venus) is badly placed, in detriment (Aries or Scorpio) or in fall (Virgo), then it might say something challenging about your life, because Venus doesn't function in Aries/Scorpio/Virgo.

Your Taurus placements might be bad if these mentioned planets of yours in Taurus forms a conjunction aspect of the fixed star Algol. This fixed star is placed at 26° of Taurus and it represents challenges, chaos and resilience. This information comes from tropical astrology, but I don't know which type of astrology you use.

To conclude, I think these Taurus placements aren't that bad. That is such a generalized interpretation of a sign. Having a bad luck in life may depend on other factors based on your birth chart, it is never a case where one particular placement indicates something this specific.

August 22 Important Dates

AKA my notes on The Astrology Podcast's August forecast, hosted by Chris Brennan and Austin Coppock.

July recap: The violent, explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction showed up in many prominent news stories last month. Here's a graphic showing its exactness over time by Madeline at honeycomb.co:

Though the conjunction went exact on the 15th, the orb is pretty wide, with the most dramatic events occurring from about July 10th-21st. This was on the fixed star Algol (the head of the demon), which is associated with the death of innocents on a broad level, and Austin provides some historical examples. The most prominent manifestation in July was the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, who was shot in the ear. Mars-Uranus was on his natal Midheaven (23♉), and closely square his natal Mars in the first house (26♌) which in turn conjoins his Ascendant (29♌). The Ascendant/first house connection makes this especially physically dangerous for him as the Ascendant is associated with one's body and physical health. As the highest point in a chart, the Midheaven is associated with public image and prominence, so in going up on a podium Trump really leaned into the transit in an inadvisable way. Chris mentions that there are some remediating factors from benefics that could explain why he survived the encounter an even got a dramatic rallying photo out of it. When the conjunction went exact on his Midheaven, though, the classified documents case against him was suddenly dismissed--a case started when Mars was on this point two years ago. Austin suggests that, due to a natal Sun-Uranus-Rahu conjunction, Trump is probably one of those people for whom Uranus, not quite universally benefic or malefic, works in his favor. The Mars-Uranus conjunction also hits the 10th house/MH of JD Vance, whose Ascendant is 27 Leo, very similar to Trump. Will he regret this choice and go back on his pick of running mate during the upcoming Mercury retrograde?

On July 17th, Biden announced he had COVID; this Mars-Uranus conjunction took place in his 6th house. (Last time Mars was in Taurus was the first time he got COVID.) It also squared his Sun (27♏) pretty closely--any president is playing the role of the Sun--and his Venus (28♏), which rules his 11th house of friends & allies. Indeed many within his own party began to call for him to step down from seeking another term around this time. He finally did so on the 21st, a conclusion to Saturn stationing retrograde on his Imum Coeli during the debate. The most recent time this happened was in 1968 when Lyndon B Johnson stepped down to let RFK run just days after a solar eclipse in Aries--the same sign as the total solar eclipse that darkened much of the US in April. Biden also stepped down during the Full Moon conjunct Pluto, which opposed his own natal Leo Pluto--last month our hosts had discussed how that generation may need to finally let go of power. Mercury (26♌) was also square Uranus (26♉) at the time, and indeed this was a shocking communication for many, including the Republican party which had just spent the last week strategizing how to beat him. Mars had also just entered Gemini, Biden's natal 7th house of partnerships and Harris's natal 1st, while Jupiter (12♊) sextiled Venus (12♌)--the most positive transit of the month. Thus we have the end of a political career for one candidate and the start of a new chapter for another--and hope for the Democrats now that they have someone other than an obviously senile candidate. Mars being copresent with Jupiter in Harris's first house heralds well for competition, and indeed she's more popular now than she ever was. Also notable is that Harris and Trump were both born on a Full Moon (as was RKF Jr!). On a mundane level, the Mars-Uranus conjunction squared the US Sibly chart Moon (27♒)...and Uranus will be there during the election cycle and beyond. Austin cautions that Uranus-Algol significations are not over just because Mars has now left the sign. The upcoming eclipse in September will likely bring more dramatic changes.

Another notable story is the Crowdstrike outage, the largest computer outage in history, affecting air traffic control, hospitals, and other heavy infrastructure. This occurred right as Mercury joined Mars & Uranus, and additionally entered the shadow period (degree to which he will regress) to his upcoming retrograde. The company is based in the path of the eclipse in April, which aligns with the path of Hurricane Beryl that ravaged much of the country in early July. Austin says as the sign of exaltation of the Sun, Aries eclipses are especially tough on leaders and indeed we have seen quite a few attempted and successful assassinations this eclipse season (said to be in effect for about 6 months). Other Mars-Uranus in Taurus stories include the Houthi drone attack near the US embassy in Israel and ensuing Isareli missile attack back on a Yemeni port, the ICJ ruling Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, a political leader assassinated in Ukraine, and student protests against the government in Bangladesh. Saturn-Neptune has brought some AI deepfake controversies, and on July 29th Biden proposed Supreme Court reforms including term limits and a code of ethics, which Chris connects to Jupiter (judges) & Saturn (constraints) coming within 5 degrees of an exact square. Austin connects Justice Department events to events in Leo, the 9th house (legal system) of the US Sibley chart, such as Mercury's upcoming retrograde. Jupiter squares Saturn in December and we may see some dramatic events with the Supreme Court then (in 2000 it decided the outcome of the election). Mars moves into Leo the day of the election and then stations early in December, further indicating confusing events around the US election late this year. It's also a recurrence of Venus opposing Jupiter on election day in 2000...but let's get to the forecast.

Forecast

August is full of dramatic T-squares and a bunch of crazy alignments. Here's a graphic by Madeline at honeycomb.co:

Chris breaks it into 4 parts: first, Mercury retrograde in Virgo and into Leo. The second week is dominated by Mars conjoining Jupiter in Gemini and squaring Saturn (which leads into the DNC...👀). The third week sees the Jupiter-Saturn square go exact, with Venus swooping in to activate Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. Both benefics and both malefics are all struggling for dominance. Finally, at the end of the month Mercury stations direct sextile Jupiter, bringing some events to completion, while Venus leaves Virgo for her home sign of Libra. Mutable signs are especially affected this month, especially middle degrees.

August 4th - New Moon in Leo, Venus enters Virgo In the Sun's sign, this is an especially supportive New Moon with a sextile from Jupiter (15♊). Things are clearing up in the fixed signs! However, the impending Mercury retrograde in Virgo casts a shadow of impending confusion.

The New Moon also occurs with Venus in late Leo, which Chris points out is Donald Trump's ascendant and to expect further developments like reconsidering his choice of running mate.

August 5th - Mercury stations retrograde Mercury is already very slow at the beginning of the month, and stations at 4 degrees of Virgo, and will eventually bring this energy back into Leo/fixed signs as well. Common Mercury rx themes are revisiting ideas from the past, people coming back into your life, and rethinking decisions. Also delays, detours, setbacks, technical issues, travel disruptions, and for individuals moments of introspection. It's a good time to reevaluate the words we use to describe things. The station starts within squaring distance of Mars, suggesting it may start with conflict before things clear up during the cazimi on the 18th.

August 7th - Mercury (rx) conjunct Venus She gives him a helping hand early in his retrograde--a moment of sweetness or repair. Venus doesn't necessarily prefer to spend her afternoon this way, especially in her sign of fall, but it's helpful for Mercury (who's calling the shots). However, Mars and Jupiter are now already within 3 degrees of conjunction--the range at which we began to see dramatic events for the Mars-Uranus conjunction in July.

August 14th - Mars conjunct Jupiter, Mercury regresses into Leo Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus are all looking at another in one way or another in a T-square for much of the month. Mars and Jupiter can give us triumphant victory and enthusiasm--exceptional quarterback Tom Brady has this conjunction natally. Mars and Jupiter also represent war and peace respectively, which bodes ill for current conflicts. Explosions and guns are also signified here: the largest non-nuclear explosion, in a Beirut warehouse, occurred under a Mars-Jupiter square. Mars-Jupiter means aggressive expansion, but with Saturn poised to square each of them in turn later this month, we'll soon run into barriers. Beware excessive confidence; it can backfire. In economic significations, Obama signed in his 2009 stimulus package under this configuration, as did Congress in 2020 (this also influenced by other major configurations, including Saturn).

August 15th/16th - Mars square retrograde Saturn Mars-Saturn is traditionally one of the most difficult alignments due to their malefic natures. Keywords include frustration, blocks and restrictions, such as the lockdowns of March & April of 2020. Mars-Saturn is hitting the brakes and the gas at the same time (and occurs right after Jupiter-Mars had the pedal to the medal). We also see fighting authority or restriction, rebellion and repression, stress-testing structures and burnout after being pushed past our limits. Mars-Saturn will definitely help you discover your limits, with Mars pushing as Saturn brings the wall. We want Jupiter's offers and rewards, but we must move carefully through disputed terrain. Mars-Saturn is a helpful configuration for aggressive discipline and relentlessness. If you're pushing physical limits during this time, do so incrementally. Additionally, with Saturn in Pisces we've seen a lot of water disasters like the Key Bridge collapse and the submarine disaster. However, with Mars in an air sign we may see an overlap in difficulties across multiple modes of transformation, especially with Mercury retrograde. It's safe to say we'll see shipping issues during this time, and a patron in the chat suggests hurricanes. In politics and extreme manifestations, Mars-Saturn squares can indicate political assassinations like that of Shinzo Abe in 2022.

August 18th - Retrograde Mercury cazimi Occurring at 26 degrees of Leo, this is the halfway point of the retrograde and occurs shortly after Mercury squares Uranus. Things start to clear up and turn around in the retrograde story. However, now Venus starts activating all this Mars-Saturn-Jupiter stuff. She's applying to a square with Mars which is interrupted by contacts to other planets, but we'll be feeling the buildup to it in the background.

August 19th - Full Moon in Aquarius, Venus opposite Saturn (Rx), both square Jupiter Based on past events, Jupiter square Saturn may bring economic contraction despite optimistic unemployment/inflation reports in the US (A/N: imo whatever good reports Chris is seeing are definitely a total load). Regardless, some of the seeds planted in 2020 during the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction in Aquarius will come to fruition this month. Jupiter-Saturn keywords include the new vs. the old and optimism vs. pessimism, especially when configured by a square and working at cross-purposes. Jupiter raises possibilities while Saturn brings the grim reality--will one side win out in a compromise, or will we found ourselves at an impasse? Chris predicts this will affect the Democratic National Convention. Other keywords include the law and courts, being held back from progress, cutting back after aggressive expansion, and indecision if growth and boundaries can't be reconciled.

This Full Moon will bring dramatic endings and beginnings, as did the one in July with Biden stepping down. The DNC starts on this day, and Chris predicts some event in the preceding days will cast a shadow over it (as was the case with Trump's assassination attempt and the RNC). Venus opposes Saturn and squares Jupiter right on this lunation, just after a Mercury cazimi square Uranus, and the Full Moon itself squares Uranus. The Venus-Mars square will go exact right as the DNC ends--expected the unexpected at Harris's likely acceptance speech. Austin describes this as a switcheroo, where it feels like Venus-Mars and then pivots to Venus-Saturn before going to Venus-Mars again.

August 22nd - Sun in Virgo, Venus square Mars Venus-Mars squares brings passion, both for romance and fighting. Sex scandals often come to light under this alignment. Mars will pass 21Gemini22, the degree he's at in the Sibley chart, right before the square to Venus, so US politics will be affected strikingly. Mars-Venus can bring us a battle of the sexes and gender-based warfare, and if it's a Trump-Harris race we'll likely see these themes take prominence. The Venus-Saturn opposition also occurs right on Harris's own natal Venus (which rules her Sun) and Saturn (12th house ruler) is transiting her 10th house now, so we're definitely going to see big developments with her (Mars transiting her first house indicates conflict or competition).

There are a lot of parallels to 1968 right now: the nodes are repeating, with eclipses in the same signs, and the Venus cycle is repeating. Already mentioned is Johnson stepping down after an eclipse. We've also had high-profile assassinations and attempts again, student antiwar protests, and a repeat of DNC being in Chicago--in 1968 the convention was marred by police brutalizing antiwar protestors. We've also got another Kennedy running for president and may see a third-party candidate having significant effect on the election (our hosts go into detail on other examples). Austin reminds us that these events will affect the whole world. As other astrologers are also pointing out, none of the indicators point towards a simple, clear election for the United States.

August 28th - Mercury stations direct The chaos is beginning to die down at this point. Mercury stations sextile Jupiter (17♊) with reception, relieving some of the tension. Enjoy a brief respite after the August storm before those of the fall.

August 29th - Venus enters Libra She's been separating from the T-square and is now in a new sign. She's now moving towards a trine with Jupiter (and away from Saturn in Virgo!), bringing some support to us.

On September 1st, Uranus will station at 27 Taurus, intensifying his significations, and Pluto regresses into Capricorn for the final time (in ~200 years). Pluto enters Aquarius for good in November, ending a 15-year transit through Capricorn (since 2008-9). Mars also shifts into Cancer early September, setting up an extended stay in that sign and Leo.

Sun Conjunct Uranus

Bad news, babes. The Sun is all about centering, ego, personal power, the glowing throne of identity. Uranus? He’s a barefoot anarchist with lightning in his pockets and a one-way ticket to Oz, dragging Dorothy and the whole damn house through the storm.

This year, the fusion party crashes right into Algol, the infamous demon star in Taurus—a celestial guillotine that loves nothing more than beheading your most cherished goals.

This isn't just spicy astro for control freaks or power players. Even those who’ve been peacefully marinating on their fifth point of contact? Consider your "stability" on fire.

What to do about it? If you’ve mastered Zen or Dao, congratulations—you don’t need advice. For the rest of us: let go. Don’t carry heavy things (literally or emotionally), and don’t try to "figure it all out." This is the aspect of de-throning, so take a note from the Mad Hatter. Destroy meaning with nonsense. Be a glorious chaos gremlin between May 17–19. Your to-do list can wait.

Starting big projects during this transit? It’s like planting petunias in an active volcano. Cute idea. Doomed effort.
