13. what’s your comfort food?

닭도리탕/ dakdoritang!!! it's a korean stew, very spicy and savory with chicken, potatoes, onions, carrots, and sometimes other things (i like to add fish cake and tteok, my mom likes to add cabbage lmao). but my other top contenders are 감자탕/gamjatang, 떡볶이/tteokbboki, 순두부찌개/sundubujjigae, 쌈/ssam, and zuppa toscana. im like if a guy was immensely comforted by soups and stews

14. favorite feel-good show?

if i want to watch something but i dont want to watch anything new and i'm looking for something comforting, daredevil (2015) or constantine (2014) for shows, pacific rim or angels and demons (2009; please don't ask. i don't know why either.). recently tho i've been tearing thru game changer

Has it been hard being a vegan in south korea?

Honestly, yes. I have been very flexible and likely tried less hard than I might have if I were here alone because I didn't want to make everything really difficult for my friends.

Was going to put this below a cut (because I imagine most of you aren't interested!) but Tumblr is being a real knob about it so I can't!

I also want to offer the big caveat that it would be much easier if my Korean were better. I know how to ask things like 'do you have things without meat/fish?' and 'can I have X but without the egg?' but my listening skills are dogshit and I find it very hard to understand the Korean spoken back to me so I've mostly opted for the first question and just gone along with what they suggest.

I've had seafood three times. Twice because there were no vegan options at the restaurant, options for restaurants were extremely limited anyway and we just needed to eat something. I was like y'know what, if I can't be vegan, I want to at least enjoy what I eat and have something more filling than fucking plain rice or pasta y'know? And seafood for me is sort of the least bad option. One time was because there was a clam sundubujjigae option and a clear tofu jjigae option; I obviously went for the clear tofu option and that shit came with clams anyway 🤣

Cafes generally do not sell food, unless you count cakes/pastries/that kind of shit so we've had a lot of sweet breakfasts. I did, on one occasion, find a vegan kimbap at 7-11 but generally, on-the-go vegan options at convenience stores are extremely few and far between. Those things combined mean that, when I've had breakfast, I've had almost exclusively non-vegan (but vegetarian) breakfasts 🙃

I would say it's extremely easy to be pescetarian here; it's easy to be vegetarian; it's difficult to be vegan. Again, with the caveat that my Korean is not really sufficient for dealing with it.

I can't speak to big supermarkets because we've not been to any!!!

Tummy hurts so bad and I've spent so much money but it's OK. I'm so stressed I can't apply to uni my personal statement is fine but i need it to be good enough and its not. Good things: 1 the light on my walk to the library was sooo the goldfinch the light takes on a physical quality 2 i got silken tofu so I can make sundubujjigae once I'm home 3 i finally bought more underwear for the first time in like a year. You want to be as prepared and well-adjusted as I am. 4 this customer who said "you're a star" to me which has always been my weakest point ever the place where the armour is thinnest for some reason. I love people telling me "ur a star" or "ur a gem" so much it does something to me. 5 I can do my laundry and cut my hair and have an everything shower once I'm home and then ill be happy. Bad things 1 TUMMY HURT

This is not a paid review. This Sundudu Jigae is delicious! Love the side dishes (banchan) too! Kimchi taste great! Pajeon is perfect. The pajeon came a bit late but we’ve been informed by the waitress if we could wait and that they did the pajeon before but the batter is a little bit thick. Hence, the kitchen staff had to re-do it. Now, that’s good customer service and food quality control! Keeping customer informed and being honest is something lacking in Malaysian f&b. Compliments to the kitchen staff and restaurant crew.
