Cannabis: A Multifaceted Plant for a Multitude of Uses
Tumblr media
Introduction
Cannabis, a plant that has been a part of human history for thousands of years, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as its myriad of uses become increasingly recognised. From its strong fibres used in textiles and paper to its nutritional and medicinal properties, cannabis has proven itself to be a truly multipurpose plant. This article will delve into the various aspects of this versatile plant and explore how it has been utilised throughout history and across cultures.
The History of Hemp: A Material with Unmatched Strength
One of the most well-known uses of cannabis is in the production of hemp, a material derived from the plant's strong fibres. These fibres have been used for millennia to create durable cloth, rope, and paper. The Vikings, known for their seafaring prowess, utilised hemp to construct sails for their ships, enabling them to voyage from Scandinavia to Nova Scotia. In the United States, Betsy Ross sewed the first flag from hempen cloth, and the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Even the now obsolete German currency, Deutsche Mark, were once printed on hemp paper.
The use of hemp extended beyond these applications, as seen in the Netherlands, where windmills were built specifically to crush hemp stalks. This demonstrates the importance of hemp in various industries and highlights the plant's incredible versatility.
Tumblr media
Cannabis as a Nutritional Powerhouse
While the strength of its fibres may have initially attracted humans to the cannabis plant, its potential as a food source likely played a significant role in its widespread cultivation. Cannabis seeds, or hempseeds, are packed with essential nutrients such as polyunsaturated fats, essential fatty acids, and proteins. These qualities qualify hempseed as a functional food, meaning it provides health benefits beyond basic nutrition.
For over three thousand years, Asian cultures have utilised hempseed as both a food and a medicine. Despite the prohibition of cannabis products in the United States, hempseed has been allowed for use in food over the last two decades. This highlights the recognition of its nutritional value and potential health benefits.
Tumblr media
Cannabis Resin: A Source of Medicinal and Psychoactive Compounds
The resin produced by the cannabis plant is another aspect that has garnered significant attention due to its medicinal and psychoactive properties. The compounds found in cannabis resin, such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), have been the focus of breeding efforts to increase their production. These efforts have led to the development of various cannabis drug chemotypes around the world, with some cultivars producing only THC, others producing both THC and CBD, and a few expressing propyl THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) and/or CBDV (cannabidivarin).
The medicinal uses of cannabis resin have been widely researched, with evidence suggesting its effectiveness in treating conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and more. The psychoactive effects of THC have also led to the recreational use of cannabis, which has sparked debates surrounding its legalisation and regulation.
Tumblr media
Environmental Benefits of Cannabis Cultivation
In addition to its myriad uses, cannabis cultivation offers several environmental benefits. Hemp plants are known to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them an effective tool in combating climate change. Furthermore, hemp requires fewer pesticides and herbicides than many other crops, reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.
Cannabis can also be used as a source of biofuel, offering a renewable and eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Additionally, the fast growth rate and low water requirements of hemp make it a sustainable crop, capable of providing resources without causing significant strain on natural resources.
Conclusion
Cannabis is a truly remarkable plant, with applications ranging from textiles and paper to nutrition and medicine. As society continues to recognise its numerous benefits, it is likely that the cultivation and use of cannabis will only continue to grow. By embracing this versatile plant, we can harness its potential to improve our health, industries, and environment for generations to come.

Chapter 3. Economy
How will exchange work?
There are many different ways exchange could work in a stateless, anti-capitalist society, depending on the size, complexity, and preferences of the society. Many of these are far more effective than capitalism at ensuring a fair distribution of goods and keeping people from taking more than their fair share. Capitalism has created a greater inequality in access to resources than any other economic system in human history. But the principles of capitalism that economists have indoctrinated the public to accept as laws are not universal.
Many societies have traditionally used gift economies, which can take many different forms. In societies with a modest amount of social stratification, the wealthier families maintain their status by giving gifts, holding lavish feasts, and spreading their wealth; in some cases, they risk the wrath of the others if they are not generous enough. Other gift economies are barely or not at all stratified; the participants simply disown the concept of property and give and take social wealth freely. In his diary, Columbus remarked with amazement that the first indigenous people he encountered in the Caribbean had no sense of property, and gave willingly of all they had; indeed, they came bearing gifts to greet their strange visitors. In such a society, no one could be poor. Now, after hundreds of years of genocide and capitalist development, many parts of the Americas have some of the starkest wealth gaps in the world.
In Argentina, poor people initiated a massive barter network that grew enormously after the economic collapse in 2001 rendered capitalist forms of exchange unworkable. The barter system evolved from simple swap meets into a huge network involving an estimated three million members trading goods and services — everything from homemade crafts, food, and clothing to language lessons. Even doctors, manufacturers, and some railways participated. An estimated ten million people were supported by the barter network at its peak.
The barter club facilitated exchange by developing a credit/currency system. As the network grew, and the capitalist crisis deepened, the network was beset by a number of problems, including people — often from outside the network — stealing or forging the currency. Several years later, after the economy stabilized under President Kirchner, the barter club shrank, but still retained a huge membership considering it was an alternative economy in the country that was once a model for neoliberal capitalism. Rather than giving up, remaining members developed a number of solutions to the problems they had encountered, such as limiting membership to producers so the network is only used by those who contribute to it.
Contemporary anarchists in the US and Europe are experimenting with other forms of distribution that transcend exchange. One popular anarchist project is the “free store” or “give-away shop.” Free stores serve as a collection point for donated or scavenged items that people no longer need, including clothes, food, furniture, books, music, even the occasional refrigerator, television, or car. Patrons are free to browse through the store and take whatever they need. Many accustomed to a capitalist economy who come into a free store are perplexed by how it could possibly work. Having been raised with a scarcity mentality, they assume that since people profit by taking stuff and do not profit by donating, a free store would quickly empty out. However this is rarely the case. Countless free stores operate sustainably, and most are overflowing with goods. From Harrisonburg, Virginia, to Barcelona, Catalunya, hundreds of free stores defy capitalist logic on a daily basis. The Weggeefwinkel, Giveaway Shop, in Groningen, Netherlands, has operated out of squatted buildings for over three years, opening twice a week to give away free clothes, books, furniture, and other items. Other free stores hold fundraisers if they have to pay rent, which would not be an issue in a completely anarchist society. Free stores are an important resource for impoverished people, who either are denied a job by the whims of the free market or who work a job, or two or three, and still can’t afford clothes for their kids.
A more high-tech example of free exchange is the relatively mainstream and wildly successful Freecycle Network. Freecycle is a global network originally formed by an environmental nonprofit group to promote giving away items that might otherwise end up in the trash. As of this writing they have over 4 million members grouped into 4200 local chapters, spread through 50 countries. Using a website to post items wanted or items available to give away, people have circulated prodigious quantities of clothing, furniture, toys, artwork, tools, bicycles, cars, and countless other goods. One of the rules of Freecycle is that everything has to be free, neither bartered nor sold. Freecycle is not a centrally controlled organization; local chapters set themselves up based on the common model, and use the website on which the model is based.
However, as it does come from a liberal nonprofit group without revolutionary aspirations nor any critique of capitalism and the state, we can expect Freecycle to have some problems. In fact, the organization accepts corporate sponsorship from a major recycling company and advertises on its website, and the chairperson has arguably slowed the spread of the Freecycle idea by attacking various member groups or copycat websites with lawsuits, or threats thereof, for trademark infringement; also by collaborating with the notoriously authoritarian Yahoo! Groups to shut down local chapters for not adhering to organizational rules concerning logo and language. Naturally, in an anarchist society there would be no lawsuits for trademark infringement and one chairperson would not be able to tyrannize a network that was maintained by millions of people. In the meantime, Freecycle demonstrates that gift economies can function even within jaded, individualistic Western societies, and can take new forms with the help of the internet.

Called Infinna, the fibre is already being used by global brands including Patagonia, H&M and Inditex, which owns Zara. "It's a premium quality textile fibre, which looks and feels natural - like cotton," says Mr Alava, rubbing his own navy blue tee between his fingers. "And it is solving a major waste problem."
Around the world, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created each year, according to non-profit Global Fashion Agenda, and this figure is set to rise to more than 134 million tonnes by 2030, if clothing production continues along its current track.
To the untrained eye, samples of Infinited Fiber's recycled fibre resemble lambswool; soft, fluffy and cream coloured. Mr Alava explains that the product is produced through a complex, multi-step process which starts with shredding old textiles and removing synthetic materials and dyes, and ends with a new fibre, regenerated from extracted cellulose.
This finished fibre can then simply "hop into the traditional production processes" used by High Street brands, replacing cotton and synthetic fibres, to produce everything from shirts and dresses to denim jeans.
Much of the science involved in making the fibre has been around since the 1980s, says Mr Alava, but rapid technological advancements in the last few years have finally made large-scale production a more realistic possibility.
In parallel, he believes High Street brands have become more focused on "really honestly looking for changing their material usage", while millennial and Gen Z consumers are increasingly concerned about shopping sustainably. "They are different animals, different consumers, to people my age," he laughs.
The company has already attracted so much interest in its technology that it recently announced it was investing €400m (£345m; $400m) to build its first commercial-scale factory at a disused paper mill in Lapland.
The goal is to produce 30,000 tonnes of fibre a year once it's operating at full capacity in 2025. That is equivalent to the fibre needed for approximately 100 million T-shirts.
"I think the impact could be quite big, if you think about the whole textile system, what exists currently and how much textile waste that we have," argues Kirsi Niinimäki, an associate professor in fashion research at Aalto University, a few blocks away from Infinited Fiber's headquarters.
"It's a really good example of actually how we can 'close the loop'… really begin to move to a circular economy."
Infinited Fiber's growth is tied into a wider vision in Finland, which wants to become Europe's leading circular economy, with a focus on reusing and saving resources. In 2016, it became the first government in the world to create a national road map designed to help reach its goal.
Several other Finnish start-ups are looking at ways to produce new textile fibres on a big scale, while also cutting down on harmful emissions and chemicals. These include Spinnova which, from its textiles factory in Jyväskylä, central Finland, transforms cellulose from raw wood pulp into ready-to-spin fibres.
Spinnova's yarn is attracting plenty of global attention and has so far been used by brands including upmarket Finnish clothing label Marimekko, and outdoor wear firms North Face, Bergans and Adidas, which recently used it in a limited edition midlayer hoodie designed for hikers.
Elsewhere in Europe, there are a range of other companies developing technologies to create more circular yarns, including Swedish startup Renewcell, and Bright.fiber Textiles, which plans to open its first factory in the Netherlands in 2023.
But experts say there are a range of challenges facing these new fibre brands as they plot their expansions.
Ms Niinimäki underlines that the clothing manufacturing sector has, until recently, been slower than many other industries when it comes to embracing sustainability, which could set the tone for a slower transformation than companies like Spinnova and Infinited Fiber hope.
"It has been so easy to produce the way that we have been producing, and just to move towards more effective industrial manufacturing on an increasingly bigger scale," she says.
"There hasn't been a big pressure to change the already existing system." However, she is hopeful that, in the European Union at least, new rules aimed at ensuring clothing manufacturers focus on more sustainable and durable products will speed up "a change in mindsets".
Another issue is whether clothing brands will be able to pass on the additional costs of their new high-tech production techniques on to consumers, especially at a time when the cost of living is spiralling globally.
Adidas' latest limited edition hoodie produced with Spinnova fabric costs €160 (£137; $160) to buy online in Finland, at least €40 more than most of its other technical hoodies.
"Fashion is a complicated area, because even if people are saying that they are environmentally aware, they don't always act rationally," says Ms Niinimäki. "There's also this kind of emotional side when you talk about fashion consumption, and of course, the price is also linked to that."
While both Infinited Fiber and Spinnova insist their business plans look holistically at all aspects of production - for example using renewable technologies to power their factories - climate campaigners argue it is still too early to accurately estimate the net effect of these new techniques on carbon emissions.
"Pulp and other alternative fibres can provide diversity for sourcing textile materials and therefore lessen the burden caused by production of more traditional textile raw materials such as cotton," says Mai Suominen, a leading forest expert for WWF. "However it depends on the use of energy, all the processes they use and how they use waste materials."
Most importantly, she argues, simply slotting more sustainable fibres into the multibillion dollar fashion industry won't be enough to combat climate change, if we keep making and buying clothes at the current rate.
There is no sustainable development unless the overall natural resource consumption is radically decreased to a level that fits within planetary boundaries," she argues.
But within the Finnish fibres industry there is a sense of boomtown optimism that the increased use of recycled or reimagined fibres could be an important part of the jigsaw in the battle to limit climate change.
"The fast-fashion companies who have been kind of creating certain parts of the problem are highly interested in new technologies," says Infinited Fibers chief executive Petri Alva. He believes that if investment continues, the recycled fibres could become mainstream within ten to 15 years.

1st January 1945: Victoria Cross action of Flight Sergeant George Thompson. A wireless operator on Lancaster PD377 of 9 Squadron RAF, his aircraft had taken off from Bardney in Lincolnshire at 7:44am, part of a mission to bomb the Dortmund-Ems canal near Ladbergen. At the point of bomb release, the aircraft was hit by an 88mm anti-aircraft shell forward of the mid-upper turret. This disabled the intercom, damaged control cables and severed hydraulic pipes, starting a severe fire. A large hole was torn in the fuselage floor, the wind fanning the flames. 🔥
Another 88mm shell hit the nose of the aircraft almost simultaneously, shattering the Perspex canopy and setting the port inner engine alight. The pilot, Flying Officer Harry Denton, was briefly rendered unconscious but managed to regain control of his crippled aircraft with the help of his flight engineer. From his position, however, George Thompson could see that the mid-upper gunner, Sergeant Ernie Potts, was unconscious in his turret and surrounded by flames.
Thompson edged past the damaged fuselage floor and pulled Potts, whose clothing was on fire, from his turret; by this point, his own uniform was also alight. Despite this, Thompson carried Potts forward to safety and beat out the flames with his bare hands. Though already badly burned, he now went to the rescue of Haydn Price, the rear gunner, who had opened the doors of his turret only to receive severe burns to his head. He had then passed out due to shock and breathing in fumes from the fire.
By this point, much of Thompson’s clothing had been burned away and his face, hands and legs were badly blistered. Yet he somehow managed to get Price to safety, again using his hands to put out the flames on his comrade’s clothes. Due to the fierce wind rushing through the fuselage, he also sustained frostbite, which only added to the agony of his injuries. When he went forward to report the situation to his pilot, Denton was unable to recognise his own wireless operator.
Despite receiving further flak damage which damaged the starboard inner engine, the Lancaster crossed Allied lines into the Netherlands. Denton managed to crash land safely, with all the crew escaping from the wreckage. Ernie Potts died of his injuries just 18 hours later, while Haydn Price would eventually recover following multiple operations. It seemed at first that George Thompson might survive his terrible burns, but he contracted pneumonia and died on 23rd January.
On 20th February 1945, it was announced that Thompson had been awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. His citation reads in part: “He hazarded his own life in order to save the lives of others. Young in years and experience, his actions were those of a veteran. One of the gunners… owes his life to the superb gallantry of Flight Sergeant Thompson, whose signal courage and self-sacrifice will ever be an inspiration to the Service.”

Finding someone who can fix a broken piece of furniture, mend clothing, or repair a family  treasure has become easier thanks to a new online platform.
The guilder is a repair exchange platform, enabling the repair of broken objects with local knowledge, skills, and tools—but without any money being exchanged.
Objects like chairs, benches, tea pots, bikes, and backpacks have all be successfully repaired since the guilder went live at the start of 2022.
Based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, design graduate Ollee Means created the platform as a way to tackle waste, and believes “every object is worth repairing”. His studies had a strong focus on sustainable design, which included design for repair and refurbishment.
Ollee recognized that while a design that enables repair is important, the skills to undertake the repairs are also required in order to realize a regenerative economy.
“Being able to fix and repair things is a valuable skill, which many communities around the world are beginning to lose. People are willing to pay more to buy something new, rather than find a way to repair the existing. This creates a lot of waste, and is not sustainable. I began the guilder to make it easier to find people in your area who can repair things.”

tbh for quite a while i didnt really get the vehemently Anti-car and anti-suburb thing but after watching some of the Not Just Bikes videos on youtube i think get it more now
tbqh/full disclosure i still currently would not be willing to give up our car, because i had to take the bus last week and what is an 11 minute drive takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes on the bus!!! and that includes 30 minutes of waiting at the bus terminal! and the buses only come once every 30 minutes MAX. and i cant sustain having to wake up 1 hour earlier for a long time, with my what i am sure is a sleeping disorder, i feel lucky i can manage to get up at the time i do to make it to work. it would be detrimental to my health to have to commute that much longer.
but i think one of the reasons i just "didnt get" the hatred for suburbia specifically is that like. i just didnt really have a good concept of what suburbs really were.
like, i clearly live in an inefficient city given the public transit but i didnt realize just how much worse real, actual suburbs were? im from a very rural area so, for people actually living in town it is a fairly walkable community but most people own cars to be able to commute out of the town for work or in order to get, like, anything other than the most basic amenities. No, we did not have a Tim Hortons, nor anywhere to buy clothes other than a couple thrift stores that lasted a few years max before going out of business yet again
but now that i've seen some examples and seen how terribly inefficent they are, i think i can finally grasp what is really meant by suburbia.
and while i still dont personally want to really live in a downtown core i'd be happy to live in a community extremely close to a more walkable place, now that ive seen some concepts of it that still include relatively nice-looking dwellings (at least from the outside lol) such as the ones in the Netherlands shown in Not Just Bikes videos
because, like, the downtown cores that are full of cars and traffic and stuff dont really look appealing? it's noisy and it looks cramped and i dont like that.
but if i was in a place where the "street" was just for parking and it lead to the road that leads to the highway to get to destinations then when you're at the destinations you can walk, like. that sounds nice.

Potato Fiber Market Future Trends And Scope Analysis Forecast 2024-2033
Potato Fiber technology is a process that uses potato skins and other plant waste to create a durable, natural fabric. The potato skins are first boiled and then ground into a pulp. This pulp is then combined with other plant fibers, such as flax or hemp, to create a strong, flexible fabric. This fabric can be used to create clothing, home furnishings, and other products. Potato fiber technology is a sustainable way to create fabric, as it uses plant waste that would otherwise be discarded. This process also requires less water and energy than traditional methods of fabric production.
To Know More: https://www.globalinsightservices.com/reports/potato-fiber-market/?utm_id=Snehalkast
Market Outlook
Since the early 2000s, potato fiber technology has become increasingly popular as a means of improving the nutritional value of food products. Potato fiber is a type of dietary fiber that is derived from the skin and flesh of potatoes. It is a soluble fiber, meaning that it dissolves in water, and is therefore able to be absorbed by the body.
Potato fiber is a relatively new ingredient in the food industry, and as such, there is still much research being conducted in order to determine all of its potential applications. However, some of the key trends that have emerged thus far include the use of potato fiber as a fat replacer, as well as an ingredient in gluten-free and low-carbohydrate foods.
One of the most promising applications of potato fiber is as a fat replacer. Potato fiber has a similar texture and mouthfeel to fat, but without the calories. This makes it an ideal ingredient for use in a variety of food products, from baked goods to ice cream. In addition, potato fiber can help to improve the texture of low-fat and fat-free products, making them more palatable to consumers.

I haven't used tumblr since like 2012 lmao. ill probably come off as a boomer actually using this as like, a blog. idk maybe people still do this. anyways, ive been keeping a journal since 2018 pretty much every day but I figure maybe someone could get something out of reading my shit. or maybe ill make friends. guess I'll just start with a brief primer and get into it.
im 28, a guy currently, musician, drummer, aspiring writer, smoking too much weed, in a weird relationship, have a cat, live in the boonies, dropped out of college senior year because drugs and giving it another shot 7 years later. and that's going well. im giving college another shot I mean, not drugs. ive given them lots of another shots.
my egg cracked, I guess, in like november. it's ridiculous. ive been dressing up in women's clothes since I was 13 and the whole time I was like "im not trans, I just only feel actual happiness when I look somewhat like a girl". genius. always said it was a kink. in november I was watching a youtube video by a trans woman and she was talking about her adolescent experience and it was like, oh shit that's me. and then I read Nevada, and I was like oh shit that's me too. fuck. still figuring my shit out, going to therapy yada yada. my girlfriend is supportive but she hasn't wanted to fuck in 3 years now so that's still a mess. im a horny gal, that's not gonna work long-term. hence, college round 2. the plan is to get my degree and sell my shit and take my cat and bounce. not sure where yet, I have a lot of ideas.
I went on 2 solo trips last year, 2 weeks to the UK and a week to the Netherlands. made me realize I can just live out of a bag and be happy. im not naive, it's not sustainable long-term and when the dopamine runs out you're left smelling like shit with a sore neck and a demolished gut biome, but I do feel like I'll never be happy if I don't give vagabonding an honest go. might fuck up my skincare routine tho. and travel is probably way more dangerous as a trans woman. well, we'll see.
anyways, yeah I'm just gonna write this like no one is reading it. really just wanted somewhere to post pictures of myself lmao. my gf and a long-distance friend are the only ones I've come out to, my friends are mostly bigots, it's been infuriating for the longest time and now it's intolerable. fox news dad, semi-fox news mom but she's not anywhere near as bad. dad is a nightmare. he's cool to me now only because he knows if he's an asshole I can just ignore his calls. he's always been mean, im not a vindictive person and ive truly always hoped he'd do some introspection and make some adjustments, but I wouldn't bet on it at this point. not many 60 year old men having total change of hearts without like, heroic doses of psychs.
moving forward im just gonna post like this is my journal. if anyone finds this feel free to like, talk to me lol. or just observe like a creep. just don't dox me or ill fuckin, be sad.

Our European Hemp Roots
How hemp seeds ended up in America.
youtube
You can listen to a great podcast about the European roots of hemp in America hosted by Casper Leitch and featuring Todd McCormick and Paul Stanford by clicking here.
The Deep Roots Of Hemp
By Casper Leitch
Hemp cultivation has been an integral part of European agriculture for centuries. It was widely grown across the continent, with evidence of its use dating back to 500-600 BC in regions like Russia and Germany. By the 16th century, hemp had become so valuable that King Henry VIII of England mandated its cultivation to supply the British Naval fleet with materials. France, in particular, emerged as a major producer, accounting for over 60% of the EU's hemp production by 2022, followed by Germany and The Netherlands. Hemp's environmental benefits were also recognized, as it helped in carbon storage, disease cycle breaking, soil erosion prevention, and biodiversity enhancement due to its pollen production.
Hemp reached North America with European settlers, with the first recorded crop planted by the French botanist Louis Hevert in Nova Scotia in 1606. The crop thrived, especially in New England, due to the suitable climate and soil. Hemp became a staple in the colonies, with laws enacted to encourage its growth. It was used for various purposes, including making ropes, clothing, and paper. The importance of hemp was such that it was even used to pay taxes during the early days of the Republic.
These points highlight the significance of hemp in the economic and agricultural history of both Europe and America. Its versatility and sustainability have allowed it to remain a valuable resource throughout the centuries. Hemp was vital in early American history. It was used extensively for its fibers to produce rope, clothing, and paper, contributing significantly to the early American economy. Some of the first laws in American colonies were "must-grow" laws for hemp, as it was essential for creating the materials needed for everyday life and commerce.
After a period of decline and prohibition in the 20th century, hemp has seen a resurgence in the USA. It's now recognized for its economic and environmental benefits, as it requires minimal pesticides and herbicides, improves soil health, and reduces erosion. Today, hemp is used in a variety of products, from textiles to food supplements, showcasing its versatility and sustainability.
The history of hemp is a testament to the plant's resilience and utility, and its journey from Europe to America highlights its importance in both continents' agricultural and economic development.
