Outer Rim Marches, #0.1
In January, I started a westmarches campaign for Mothership RPG. This is the first post in a series of play reports and mini-reviews I intend to share of the campaign-in-progress.
Let's call this post "Zero Session #1," in a series of Zero Session posts, where I'll get into the how/why of organizing and running this campaign.
Why? Well, I own a ton of Mothership modules. I've been playing and writing for Mothership RPG for over two years, yet most of my sessions became playtests and that "work-only" connection to the game was burning me out.
So, I decided to build a sandbox campaign around the physical MoSh games I have in hand, and to find folk to play at an open table.
For now, ok, sure, it's more of an open table sandbox for interconnected one-shots than a "true" westmarches game, especially since the game has only one GM (me, but I'm hoping to open that up soon). But Outer Rim Marches sounds cool, eh?
Initial Forward Operating Base (F.O.B.)
Tumblr media
The PCs arrived at Sater's Redemption. They work for The Company, who hired them to represent their new presence amid a mess of other factions, and leases a ship, The Orpheus, to the Crew.
(We decided the official corporation name of The Company that owns their ship will be revealed in play. That hasn't happened yet, eight sessions later. I love hanging this important piece of worldbuilding in the balance for when it can have a bigger narrative impact. Not knowing wtf is going to happen is one of my favorite parts of running ttrpgs.)
The Crew's job: explore the Outer Rim to establish footholds in new trading hubs (F.O.B.s), discover novel exploitable resources (artifacts), capture profitable exobiological lifeforms, and spread the influence of The Company.
The above graphic might be familiar to folk who follow my substack, the 5 Million Worlds Rokaner Report. Each month, I release a free sci-fi adventure setting, and this station was the featured world in the April edition. A taste of things to come.
Game Organization
When I set out to recruit players, the first important bit was setting a firm, regular playtime. When people reached out, I sent them the Consent in Gaming fillable PDF to get an idea of collective Lines/Veils. Once I got that back, I sent a google survey to gauge interest in modules and game commitment to split folks into ping-able groups.
The playtime is working out well. We had one three week break, I was out sick one time, and only once did we have not have enough folk to play. Ten sessions out of a possible fifteen since January!
I kinda fucked up the module-interest part of the survey though. I listed module names, and without content tags this was pretty useless for the players (outside the BIG names, like Hull Breach). I intend to redo this survey soon, and I'll share a copy here when I do!
The player commitment bit was super helpful, at least. Since I run games on Discord, I split players into three groups: the Command crew who vote on which job to take, the mainline players are the Crew I ping each week to advertise the game (I make an "Event" in Discord), and and a final Cryo group to call on when games don't fill up right away.
This has worked super well for me, even when I drop the ball on giving the players the Event ping in advance.
The Sector Map
Tumblr media
I built this hexmap using Sectors Without Number, which is a sector generator for Stars Without Number. I opted for this against the recommendations of Mothership's Warden's Operation Manual because in a westmarches campaign, from what I've understood, the world is meant to be established once the game begins. I think this is especially important should other GMs and player groups begin playing in this world.
To be blunt, I found using this is kind of annoying. There's a lot of irrelevant SWN info to delete, TONS of systems to hide individually, and it's pretty intensive to integrate module info into the systems.
In short, listen to Sean McCoy's advice in the Warden's Operation Manual if you're starting your own Mothership game and don't fucking do this, haha.
And to be honest, I'm not sold on this even being useful as a sandbox tool intended to be shared with other GMs, even. The verdict is still out. To be continued in another Zero Session post down the line.
ANYWAY! This map looks empty, but that's because it's the player-facing starcharts the Company gave them. PCs need to buy hyperspace route maps at various hubs to explore beyond these bounds. So the star and hyperlane layers hold loads of hidden info.
Feel free to poke around the current state of the sector.
And I do like the shift from a web to hexmap. Little swirls of points get me all crossed up. The Jump-drive distances in Mothership are amenable to using hexes, and tracking distance (i.e. time passed) is straightforward.
ORM Campaign Sneak Peek
Mothership space travel takes a long-ass time, in case you didn't know. To date, we've played nine adventures over ten sessions, and over two years have passed in the campaign world.
Tumblr media
The players skipped over a lot of systems to go to Hardlight, which they've recently learned is on the edge of the Public Sector (from Hull Breach). Gonna be some interesting sessions coming up.
The next Outer Rim Marches post will be the official ORM#1, in which the players board the lauded Year of the Rat.

Project Updates - Aug 6, 2024
Back at it again! I'm hoping to get these devlogs up to at least once a month, if possible, assuming I can keep up this kind of pace with coding. Updates under the cut~
SWN GM Tool
When I decided to update my project list, I said I was moving my old SWN GM Tool down to a sort of backburner status. It felt a bit like the end of an era; the GM tool was my first real personal project that I had started after college and had been poking at it for the last ten years or so, so officially putting it on hold with a desire to come back to it one day was a little interesting.
Especially since I started working on it again that very same week.
I decided to start the whole project over, essentially, and use this as an opportunity to learn to use Godot more at the same time. Within a few days, I had made a simple Faction creation widget as well as a list of factions. In a week, I had a mechanism for saving that faction list to a file and loading it back up as well. All in a simple application made with Godot UI nodes!
I haven't touched the project again in a little over a month, now, but I'm feeling very good about returning and working more on it. Next steps are to make a Faction View scene that shows the stats and assets of the faction, and allows adding and removing assets. Once I feel like I have a good enough user experience for it - something that's not really my specialty - I'll probably upload it to itch.io with just the Faction and asset tracking. After that, I'd like to include a simple map and then a way to run the Faction Turn.
Libtcod Tutorials
Over a year after I received feedback from r/roguelikedev about my attempt at making a C++ tutorial for libtcod, I have begun making a concerted effort to continue working on the codebase again!
After the whole effort of getting a simple eventing system using double-dispatch in place, I took a pretty good break before returning. I decided to make sure the code was working on both Linux and Windows, and updated to the C++23 standard at the same time, which introduced some issues. At first I thought it was a problem with MSVC, but was able to replicate it with Clang as well. It turns out that the way I was doing virtual inheritance for the event handlers worked perfectly fine in C++20, but broke in C++23. Getting that figured out took a few days, but after that I confirmed it worked on GCC, Clang, and MSVC :D
Next I'm going to continue working on the actual tutorial code before I return to writing the tutorials for C++ again, to make sure that there's not more optimizations or architectural changes I'll want to do down the line that would be better to backport again.

See new  Oli London @OliLondonTV Glastonbury festival goers, many of them eco activists, left the festival field littered with rubbish, plastic and even laughing gas canisters. An estimated 2,000 tones of waste is left on the festival fields each year at the festival that prides itself as leading ‘the charge in sustainable living’. This years event featured a climate change talk: ‘One Minute To Midnight: Can Politics Deliver On Climate Action?.’ Speakers at the talk included an Extinction Rebellion eco zealot and former Labour Party leader Ed Miliband lecturing the crowd on the need for sustainability. Irish Woman Loses $820,000 Injuries Claim After Being Seen Tossing Christmas Tree
Tumblr media
An Irish court dismissed Kamila Grabska’s $820,000 injuries claim after a photograph showed the woman throwing a 5ft spruce at a charity event in January 2018.
Mrs Grabska, 36, had sued an insurance company and claimed she experienced constant neck and back pain as a result of the crash on Feb. 3, 2017, The Guardian reported.
The mother of two stated that the injuries she sustained in the crash had hindered her ability to work, engage in activities with her children, and perform basic chores for over five years, she said. However, during a recent hearing, a photograph from a national newspaper was presented, depicting Mrs Grabska seemingly participating in a Christmas tree-throwing competition on January 8, 2018, which she ultimately won.
Justice Carmel Stewart dismissed the case based on this inconsistency. The judge said the “very graphic picture” played a role in her decision. “It is a very large, natural Christmas tree and it is being thrown by her in a very agile movement,” she said, the Irish Independent reported, according to The Guardian.
“I’m afraid I cannot but conclude the claims were entirely exaggerated,” the judge added. “On that basis, I propose to dismiss the claim.”
According to SWNS, the woman argued that she was still in pain while participating in the competition. She also said she quit her job after the crash and subsequently collected disability.
Altogether, Grabska calculated a loss of approximately $541,615 in past and projected earnings attributable to her injuries.
She refuted accusations of faking her injuries, asserting, as per reports from the Irish Independent and The Guardian, that she was merely “endeavouring to lead a normal life.”

Research reveals all the things people don't understand about cats
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-news/cat-news/research-reveals-all-the-things-people-dont-understand-about-cats/
Research reveals all the things people don't understand about cats
What don’t you understand about your cat? (Picture: SWNS)
Cat owners are admitting that they are baffled by their pet’s behaviour.
A poll of 2,000 cat owners has revealed 47% ‘don’t get’ their furry friend, while 87% feel stumped by their quirky behaviours.
However, it’s the power of a cat being able to differentiate the opening of a treat packet over a salad bag that confuses people the most.
Cats also like to get their claws into everything they see – but their persistent clawing of furniture, instead of scratching posts and random outbreaks of five-minute ‘zoomies’, also features on the top 30 list of weirdest cat traits.
Despite their strange ways, 65% wouldn’t change anything about their fluffy friend and 53% find most things they do hilarious.
The research was carried out by Wisdom Panel in an effort to bring us closer to the felines in our lives.
Partnering with The Scratching Post rescue charity, during a time when abandonment cases are at an all-time high, the DNA testing company has launched the world’s first catwalk for cats as fashion week draws to a close.
It showcases their diversity and beauty while trying to encourage cat adoption.
Susan Delaney, founder of The Scratching Post, says: ‘The past few months have been incredibly challenging for rescue charities.
‘Shelters have always struggled with abandonment, however the cost-of-living crisis has definitely contributed to more people having to part ways with their pets.
‘Adoptions have also been impacting, reducing by 40% since pre pandemic levels, which unfortunately is causing rehoming centres to hit crisis point.
‘It was fun to showcase the personalities of our cats that are available for adoption, whilst also celebrating global fashion weeks.’
They are weird and wonderful creatures (Picture: Getty Images)
Other bizarre cat behaviours that we are intrigued by include moggies being obsessed with empty boxes and lying down on clothes you’ve put on the bed.
Meanwhile, the mystery of going from cuddling to ‘attack mode’ without warning is also on the list.
The average cat owner will have four felines in their lifetime – with 39% admitting their current one is their ‘best friend’.
Unsurprisingly, 56% admit they find it hard to resist treating their own cat. However, there is some distrust among owners with 36% suspecting their pet goes from house to house eating food from other people.
More than half (55%) believe each cat has many different personalities, with 52% wishing they could communicate with their kitty through language.
And according to the OnePoll study, almost half (48%) go as far as ‘meowing’ back as a way of communicating with their feline friend.
Georgina Richardson, head of Wisdom Panel UK, explains: ‘Each feline catwalk model was tested with our new DNA kits – screening for 70+ breeds and populations, 45+ genetic health conditions, blood type and 25+ physical trait tests.
‘We were thrilled to have ITV This Morning’s vet Dr Scott Miller present the results at the event, uncovering the unique traits and genetic makeup of each rescue cat.
‘We really want to encourage potential cat-owners to consider adoption and to do it properly by DNA testing them first in order to truly understand them.’
More: Animals
The top 30 things cats do that baffle their owners:
How they can tell the difference between the treat packet opening and something that’s of no interest to them like a bag of salad.
Why they ignore their scratching posts and go for the furniture instead.
Why they get ‘zoomies’ at random times and seem to go absolutely mad for five minutes.
Why they meow at you when you’re eating, seemingly asking for some of your food, and when you give it to them, they just ignore it.
Why they constantly seem to try and get in places you don’t want them to, like cupboards or under the bed.
How they get comfortable sitting in really uncomfy looking places.
Where they go when they’re out of the house.
Why they always seem to lie down on clothes you’ve laid out to wear.
Their obsession with empty boxes.
Why they suddenly go from purring and cuddling to ‘attack mode’.
Why they’ll eat one brand of food and not another.
Why they seem to lie on their back and ask for a tickle, then attack the tickler.
What they get out of staring aimlessly out of the window for hours.
Why they choose 3am as the optimum time to sprint around the house at top speed.
Why they insist on bringing in dead animals.
Why they stare at you for long periods of time.
Why they try to fit themselves into a box of any size.
Why they seem to adore certain houseguests and hate others.
How they can nap in such weird places.
Why they seem to get on with some cats, and not others.
Why they always knock things off the side.
Why they rub their head against you when you’re working.
How they can squeeze themselves through the tiniest gaps.
The weird noises they make if they end up in a cat fight.
Why they drag treats like chicken bones off to eat them in private.
Why they run away at the sight of a person.
Why they need such ridiculously sharp claws.
Why they attack your feet for no reason.
Why they play with hair bands etc. and ignore their actual toys.
Why they can’t resist string.
