Just a quick correction: the shooter, Susan Lorincz, didn’t “engage” with Owens’ children, she assaulted them.

So apparently the current protocol for the police—when a white person shoots, chokes to death or otherwise kills an innocent unarmed Black person—is to A) not immediately arrest the killer B) not charge them with any crime C) refuse to release their name, and D) give them ample time to scrub their social media accounts of any incriminating activity long before any “official” investigation is conducted.

Unsurprisingly, this is, almost without fail, the exact opposite of what the police and media do when a murder victim is white but the suspect is Black: A) the Black suspects are immediately arrested B) immediately charged with a felony C) and not only are Black suspects instantly named, they are instantly vilified and we know any mistake they ever made from preschool onwards, and D) the police and corporate media outlets immediately share every scrap of their social media.

This is America in black & white. It’s the centuries-old, structure of interlocking systems working precisely as intended.

how much abt the boys will change?? like ik the names, outfits, and really anything with ties to mh/crp will be severed, but will they retain (mostly) the same personalities in the rewrite?

Yes and no

The way I write personalities and people compared to og syg is so much different it's a little hard to say from a readers standpoint.

Some aspects of their personalities, histories, habits, and hobbies are either gone entirely, dimmed down, or amplified. For example in the original Tim drank but not excessively. Joe (Tim) is a high functioning alcoholic. This change was made because syg Tim felt like one but wasn't. One change that came purely out of being a new character is Apollo (toby) being meaner- of you want to compare he's closer to ycyd toby in that sense.

But the very very base of Toby sillyness, Brians cunning, Tim gruffness are all still there. We also wanted the same dynamic between them with a few tweaks that would make for better drama and story flow.

As for progress I'm working on the last 3 chapters of the first draft which has been slow going since it's finals season. Expect the book to end around the mid-30s of the og. It's likely to be a duology but we'll see.

Outside the National Rifle Association annual meeting in May, protesters demanded sweeping reforms to the type of lax gun laws that contributed to the slaughter of 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, earlier that week. 

But inside the Houston convention center, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem bragged about how she was making her state even more gun friendly. 

Along with repealing permit fees for concealed-carry licenses and loosening restrictions on carrying loaded guns, Noem and her fellow Republicans had found a way to dramatically expand the power of “stand your ground” laws.

Under the law passed in March, if a shooter in South Dakota claims self-defense, police and prosecutors can’t make an arrest, bring criminal charges or take a case to trial unless they can first show, with clear and convincing evidence, that the claim was false. It’s a procedural change with momentous implications, effectively undoing hundreds of years of legal precedent. 

Under traditional notions of self-defense, it’s up to the person making such a claim to prove it. The new law shifts the burden of proof to the state. Now police and prosecutors must prove a negative – that a shooter was not in fear for their life – to even bring a case. According to legal experts, that’s an almost impossible standard to meet, meaning that many shooters won’t face charges for crimes as serious as murder.

Reveal has reviewed more than 150 cases from the last decade that involved a claim of self-defense under stand your ground-type laws. We found:

Expanded self-defense laws are being used to justify the use of deadly force against roommates, in road rage incidents and child custody disputes, and against vulnerable groups such as people with mental illness or who are unhoused.

Stand your ground laws are being successfully invoked in cases in which the shooter was the aggressor and in situations that could’ve been de-escalated.

Prosecutors have cited stand your ground laws as a reason not to pursue charges against law enforcement officers and jail guards for in-custody deaths.

Women in abusive relationships and people of color have tried and failed to invoke stand your ground in many cases, showing that these laws perpetuate inequities that are baked into the legal system.
