3rd April 2024
Day 2 of 100 days of productivity.
I have my exams for Japanese coming up and I'm way too behind on the syllabus and have an especially weak vocabulary. So I've been trying to read up in Japanese from sources other than the college textbooks. I managed to get some Level 4 and 5 short stories off of Tadoku and so far have read 3 out of the 6 I had downloaded and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the ones that revolve quite a lot around wordplay.
Today I've started with 幽霊床屋(ゆうれいとこや).
I tend to highlight the kanjis I'm already familiar with, which most people find dumb but but hear me out. It gives an odd sense of satisfaction as opposed to when I used to highlight the kanjis I needed to learn/retain. Now when I can easily recall the reading of the Kanji, I highlight it. That way I can also get an idea of just how many kanjis in a single page am I familiar with. it's like a progress tracker. I do this mostly with new reading materials and not my college textbooks since the vocab and kanji of college prescribed books are a compulsion to learn before the start of a new chapter anyway.
I think I'll post the 新しい単語(あたらしいたんご) in a separate post, once I'm done with the story.

have you seen / reviewed Short Stories for Japanese Learners? Is it worth buying? the ISBN is 979-8395674241
Thanks for asking about Short Stories for Japanese Learners! I haven't had the chance to read books from this series, yet, but I did check out some excerpts and it looks pretty awesome!
The concept seems to be identical to other graded reader series for Japanese with focus on the extensive reading approach and even the same five reading levels that e.g. the NPO Tagengo Tadoku promotes as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the accessibility of the language and the illustrations. Every story also seems to come with a vocabulary list, comprehension quizzes and a translation.
Looking around a bit I also found the author's website, where you can get a free PDF with 5 stories of their level 1 (Introductory Level) just by subscribing to their newsletter.
I think I'll arrange with my library to get some books from this series, so thanks again for bringing it to my attention!

do you have any good reccs for Japanese students who want to practice reading? like short stories and the like?
I have a few! Although it's really just resource suggestions, not specific stories.
Generally, I'd recommend checking out Tadoku for free, easy to read stories. I made a post about the site forever ago, but basically: they have leveled reading material from 0 (the easiest) to 5 (the hardest), the stories are mostly children's books and pretty short, and they've got (imo) a pretty solid selection of free material.
https://tadoku.org/japanese/en/free-books-en/
If you're just starting out and want simple stuff, scrolling through the lower level books and picking any that catch your eye would definitely be worthwhile.
For slightly higher level practice I'd suggest looking into things like Aoitori Bunko books, Tsubasa Bunko Readers, or other similar chapter book style stuff (which I don't have to bother writing a bunch of details about because @onigiriforears already made a great post talking about them here!)
If you're at a higher level and want to read novel style short stories that aren't targeted at kids as much, you could look for untranslated copies of Japanese short story collections, too! In one of my literature in translation classes we read a lot of stories out of Dazai's and Kawabata's collections, and I'd absolutely recommend looking at things like that, especially if the genres appeal to you. Someday I'll get my hands on an untranslated copy of what I read in that class. When I have more time to search.
I know none of these are super specific recommendations, but I hope it helps anyway! Honestly, I don't read as much as I should so I don't have many good specific suggestions, lol
Good luck with reading! I hope you can find some stuff you like! And depending on the level you're looking for I could definitely give specific suggestions offered on Tadoku, it's been my lifeline for reading practice for almost a year now.
