I just wanted to say that I am in AWE of your organization skills. That masterlist is masterfully done. I’m trying to do something similar for my own blog, but I’m having a hard time figuring out categories and making sure things don’t overlap and everything is easily findable. I aspire to get it looking like yours!
@thegirlsinthecity Thank you for your kind words 😊. It's still an imperfect system (some tag overlappings that seemed like a good idea at the time, now I'm doubtful about, and the Archive view is rather unwieldly), but hopefully it's useful for the visitor.
This whole thing grew with time, and I wouldn't be able to handle it if not for a few tools. Just in case you didn't know them, they are:
XKit: a desktop browser plugin that brings a set of little fantastic "quality of life" tools to Tumblr. The ones I use the most are:
Quick Tags, where I have a lot of tagging presets. Most of times, adjusting them is just a matter of deleting some tags in the result of its application (for example, when a fan art post isn't about SWTOR, I just delete that tag), which is fast to do.
Tumblr media
And One-Click Postage: it has the Reblog button bring up this little panel that can produce a reblog, a scheduled one or a draft at the click of one of those bottom buttons. The beauty of it is that it can auto-tag with the original post's tags and the name of the original blogger (which is great if one is doing a reblogs drafts spree while idly scrolling the site and wants to later remember what they were about, for when the time comes to tidy them up and reblog them). That, or let you add the tags from the very Quick Tags list, either at that moment or while editing them.
Tumblr media
They are a lifesaver. The thing is, there are several XKit variants around, each with a different level of feature parity and compatibility, but they can coexist. I'm mostly using @new-xkit-extension for classic editor posts and reblogs, and XKit-Rewritten for the new editor ones.
And speaking of lifesavers: given the poor state of Tumblr's blog maintenance tools, every time an artist changes their blog's name or I discover a better way to tag old posts and reblogs, the idea of having to edit a lot of them becomes quite dreadful. There is, though, this tool: tags.circumfluo.us. Basically, a web application that offers tag search-and-substitute functions (including replacing sequences of tags, say, find A B C and replace with A D C keeping that order).
Tumblr media
One must be a little careful when the list of posts exceeds certain amount, as Tumblr has some daily limits for this kind of post modifications (at worst, you can find out that it didn't manage to process all of them and that you can't post any more for the day, but you could do it again another day to process the ones left). It is great for massaging the way one has tagged things into shape.
So, I'd say just tag things in a way that feels usable to you 🙂. Consistency doesn't have to be perfect, although these tools make it far easier, and you can always readjust things later with tools like that webpage.
And again, thanks for the praise. I really love it when people find this thingy of mine both useful and usable.

Random tumblr hacks and info:
if you are on mobile, you can fast queue or fast reblog by holding down the queue or reblog button and then swiping up to the little icon of your blog (if you have sideblogs, they'll show up as options.)
if you're on desktop, you can fast queue by holding down W and clicking the reblog button (it should turn pink when you press W) or fast reblog by holding down E and clicking reblog (should turn blue.)
you can edit tags now on desktop -- not on mobile yet, but if you make a typo in a tag on desktop, you can click into the tag and edit it directly instead of having to retype the whole thing
similarly, on desktop you can rearrange tags before posting by grabbing the # and dragging the tag into place. Can't do this on mobile. Yet.
You can blacklist both tags AND post content. In your settings, you can block any post that has, say #tarantulas in the tags, but if you REALLY don't want to see any of that you can add "tarantula" and "tarantulas" to your blocked content list as well.
op's tags are persistent. So if the original poster tagged it with #tw blood, you don't have to worry about tagging it before you reblog. It'll carry through. However it has to be OP, not the secondary person you reblogged from, and this doesn't apply to tags on reblogs. Those are just for you and your followers.
Only the first ~5 tags on your post are searchable on the site. Anything after that is fair game for subvocalizing, adding your own commentary, or screeching over lovely art.
The search function is garbage. But you can go to your blog and add "/tagged/tarantulas" to the end of the URL to (in theory) show (most of) the posts that have that.
A great way to edit tags (or find posts with specific tags when tumblr fails you) is tags.circumfluo.us/. This site is invaluable. You can search any tag you've used and replace it -- or click the hyperlink to go straight to the post. Did you just realize you've been tagging Martyn Inthelittlewood as Martin this whole time? That's your salvation right there.
You can make your posts unrebloggable and/or un-reply-to-able in the settings when you make the post (little gear menu at the top) and you can edit them to change those factors after posting.
Don't bother to edit a post once enough people have reblogged it: the one they reblog will remain as it was when they reblogged it, and anyone who reblogs from them will get that copy. You can change the original, but there's not much point as once it's out the gate there's no getting that horse back to fix a typo. (however, this can be used for jokes and bits. just don't bother doing it to actually FIX something lol)
save your brain and turn off infinite scrolling
Also turn off "recommended for you," "in your circles," and any other recommended posts, as well as setting your dashboard to reverse-chronological.
blocking means nothing. no one will be offended. do it liberally, it's freeing and very good for your mental health.
Your blog is your bedroom. Decorate it and make it nice. There's a million themes out there, but a good place to start is @theme-hunter -- this site still lets you directly edit the code of your theme, so go nuts.
You can turn off notification/message sounds in the settings. Do it. Save your sanity.
If you go to a blog's ask page, messages are limited to 500 characters. If you hover over their username in your dash, click the little meatball menu, and click "Ask" there is no character limit.
if you use the tag #tumblr, you'll get a phantom like on your post XD
There's no way to turn off notifications for something after you've posted it. Sadly. So if you have something blowing up your notes and you want to keep it but you DON'T want the notifications, reblog it once at a quiet time so not too many people reblog it from you again... and then delete the original post. Everyone who reblogged it still has it, it's just not sending you mail anymore.
There's a few more but this post is getting long so I'm just going to link the official tumblr "Lesser-Known Features" article

tags.circumfluo.us is not acknowledging the existence of tag with hyphen, with or without percent encoding, and therefore is not useful for mass renaming that tag to identical-looking tag with space
xkit rewritten tag replacer, same problem
tumblr built-in mass post editor doesn't seem to be able to search by tag at all, never mind rename tag "marinette dupain-cheng" to "marinette dupain cheng"
and there are zero posts on my tumblr tagged "vic". none. I checked. my tumblr can stop suggesting "vic" before "victor nikiforov" and "victuuri" any time now.

It won’t let me reply to your post for some reason (lol hopefully it didn’t glitch and you get the same reply a hundred times) so I’m sending this ask.
I’ve used this tool before to mass change a tag! You can edit an entire tag to change it to another name. It’s been very handy on some occasions!
https://tags.circumfluo.us
Thanks for passing this along! I've had difficulty using this tool in the past since some Tumblr changes that meant only being able to search up so many pages at once, but it's been a little while since I've tried and the search functions on this site have slightly improved since then, so worth a shot. I appreciate the tip!

there’s this tumblr tag replacer at https://tags.circumfluo.us ! it’s usually what i use to replace tags! it might tell you you’ve tried to replace too many tags at once if there’s ~>500 posts but it’s lying, give it a minute and the tags can be replaced, and you can replace them with multiple tags! ex: ‘empires smp’ can be replaced with ‘empires smp’ AND ‘empires season 1’ at the same time!
oooh thanks! I use the tag replacer all the time but I didn't know I could replace it with multiple at once. I could probably add the S1 tag onto all my empires posts and then go back and manually delete that tag from just what I've reblogged today :0

Tbh, only reason I still have my tag for word emojis as "Nonverbal Emotes" is because I'm already in so deep and it'd be a huge pain in the ass to go through every single post and change that tag to "wordmojis" or what have you. I'm definitely on your side with nonverbal not being the word everyone who loses speech to use
~Emojifarm
Fair enough! If it helps, https://tags.circumfluo.us/ is a tag replacer website I’ve used dozens of times, if you want to use that to edit common tags on your blog
