J35 Tahlequah carries her dead daughter above the waves in the Puget Sound. This is the second calf she has lost. In 2018, she became famous from her "tour of grief" by carrying her calf's corpse for 17 days over 1000 miles.
The southern resident killer whales are starving because of humans depleting their food source. Read more about how to help these whales support their newborns and thrive in our waters.

More snow pics from around the Northeastern State campus. The original picture was uh... I'd call it "crunchy" and I'm not sure how that happened. So I tried to fix it with the editing software ony computer with very different results. I kind of love how the "softer" version here reminds me of pictures from the 70s. (circa 2008)

Donna Kay Kingston, 18
Last seen in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in 1984. She had left to Tulsa with an unidentified male who promised her work, and she promised to call her family, but never did.

Double Weave Lidded Rivercane Basket - Carol Welch - Date unknown.
This lidded basket was made by Cherokee basket weaver Carol Welch. Lidded baskets such as these were used to store foodstuffs and household goods.
The double weave makes for a tight basket; some double weave baskets are even waterproof. The basket and cover are rectangular, one fitting inside the other. The top and base are different patterns. The diagonal bands of color that run from cover to base are from two different dyes; dark brown from butternut and orange from bloodroot, both plants native to the western North Carolina region. The design on the basket's base is the Arrowhead; the cover is Man in a Coffin with the "coffins" forming a band around the top of the basket.
The double weave method is a complex weaving technique used by skilled Cherokee weavers. Carol Welch learned to weave white oak baskets from watching her mother. She later learned how to weave rivercane and honeysuckle baskets while attending Cherokee Indian School under Lottie Stamper.

One of my favorite pictures from my days in college. I wonder if this pretty little gazebo is still there? (circa 2008)

Orcas have been captured by the hundreds starting from the 60s to be put on display at marine parks and aquariums, but only few dozens would survive being taken into captivity. It put some groups at great risk of extinction, like the Southern Residents. As of July 2024, there were only 73 of them left! The orca in this picture is known as J35 Tahlequah, who became famous worldwide back in 2018 for mourning her dead calf, carrying it for 17 days, being even helped by her pod so she could take a rest. This brought up the debate about just how intelligent and capable of emotions these incredible animals actually are, showcasing even more just how harmful and cruel it is to keep them in captivity!
On top of that issue, most current captive orcas can't even be released in the wild for being hybrids between very different populations, resulted from breeding programs between the parks after they were prohibited from capturing wild orcas. Now there are efforts from several activists to transfer these orcas to seaside sanctuaries where they'll get to at least be in sea waters, free from tanks that are bathtub sized for them!
