TAI THE EPISOPDE THE EPISODE THE NEW BLEACH EPISODE! THOUGHTS?

Everything moved so fast .. I feel like I blinked and it was over !

My takeaways:

-> SO Incredibly saddened we did not see the Captain's or Lieutenants meeting before the sternritter arrived. They seem to be cutting out a lot of things I felt were important for atmosphere, attention to detail and character interactions .. (like at Sasakibes funeral, the meetings, little interactions). I was really looking forward to seeing Izuru talk at the meeting, and we didn't get that.

-> Quilge's """" Voll Stern Dich""" ... lol, was wonderful!! I'm so excited about the new sounds they added for the effects, it was so wonderful. His voice actor is superb, I've not been disappointed by him at all.

-> The vibrancy of the colors is amazing as always. I'm really enjoying the actual experience of watching it! The colors, the sound, the ost, the animation, it's.. unreal that this is even "Bleach".

-> and of course. Bazzy-B (and the other sternritter ofc)..... what an entrance. The gate of the sun scene was so oumph.. stunning, wonderful.

Ive seen the entire manga and yet.. the scene with 3rd division happened so suddenly, I felt so shocked! I was FOR SURE that the invasion would happen in next week's episode, but it seems they have the pacing at mach 4 speeds .. I don't entirely mind it but I hope they don't cut out more of my favorite scenes. The first invasion impacted me as a young teenager reading bleach for the first time.. and I just hope it gets done justice. So far, I'd say it is. I can't wait for next week's episode!

your top 5 good finales of BL (not necessarily of 2023)?

This is such a hard question since most shows have mid to weak finales, but I did come up with five from shows I watched this year (though not all originally aired this year).

I Cannot Reach You

If you haven't watched this jbl yet, please do so immediately. It's on Netflix now in most regions. Truly a perfect friends to lovers narrative that is so smart about the tropes it deploys, and sometimes subverts. The finale left the relationship in such a strong place, paid off the sexual tension in a way most jbls don't, and did one of my favorite trope subversions of the whole show.

La Pluie

I know some of y'all complained about the pacing of this finale but I gotta say, you're just wrong. We needed to see Tai make his long slow journey to work through his own bullshit and be the one to find Patts and finally use his words. It was a fitting end, an important conclusion to Tai's character arc, and a final exclamation point on the show's themes.

Jack O' Frost

I love love love this underappreciated jbl about the lies, big and small, that we tell in relationships and how they affect trust, and I love that its message was ultimately that it is worth sticking it out with someone you love even if they have disappointed you. Ritsu's realization that he had also been dishonest, even if not on the same scale as Fumiya, and his realization of how much joy and confidence the relationship brought him, opened a door for him to see his way to forgiveness.

Wedding Plan

THE GAYS WON!!! Yiwa told her parents to fuck off and eloped with Marine. Sailom was freed from his fake wedding and any expectations that he would ever marry a woman. Nuea got the love and devotion he deserved. And we got a beautiful story about finding the bravery to live an honest life and rebuilding your family with the people you can trust. Such a beautiful show.

What Did You Eat Yesterday?

This show originally aired in 2019, but I watched it for the first time this year, and its first season has one of the best final episodes of all time. The show is slice of life but there is an ongoing relationship arc playing out across the season, and the season finale pays it off beautifully, with Shiro and Kenji experiencing a moment of emotional catharsis that was so well-earned. Not sure anything will ever top it.

I'm just gonna keep talking about La Pluie. I saw multiple reactions calling most of episode 8 boring. I am sorry, but if you came to the show interrogating the concept of soulmates and were bored because the two romantic leads said that they choose each other even if they aren't destined to be together, I think you are too jaded and need to take a break from romance.

Sincerely, it baffles me to see people engaging with genre stories and seemingly getting mad that a show is playing around with the conventions of the drama. The spoiler culture brain rot is destroying media literacy and it really makes me sad that it seems like we're chasing the high of something new and unexpected. This on the website of the people reading the same kind of fanfic for the umpteenth time to get their fix.

I just don't get going into romance and being mad that they're doing the big romance things in a show literally about big romance.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

I am going to interpret this to mean a character that the fandom doesn't like, and not just someone that folks don't know about. I could write about Uncle Man from 21 Days Theory, and I've already written about Framboise.

So I'm going to write about Korn from UWMA. Sometimes I will say on the podcast that "y'all don't like gay men when we're not pretty, funny, sexy, or entertaining." I have to suffer through comments about how Kao is a bad actor or that Korn sucks all the time, and both are wrong. Y'all just don't care about the stoic gay boys that try their damndest to pass and quietly suffer.

Korn is a tragic character because he was trying to be the man that he was expected to be, and then Intouch came along. He was harsh to Intouch throughout much of their romance because he knew what he was going to do. You can see the pain leaking out of that man's eyes the entire time. Intouch tried to save him. Hell, they brought Perth Tanapon to cry about their deaths to hammer home how sad the whole thing was.

It just makes me really sad sometimes around here that we're only ever going to get worked up about the loud and flamboyant characters, or the especially pretty and charming ones.

I am here for characters like Korn (UWMA), Mamoru (Kabe Koji), Shiro (WDYEY), Mitsuru (EY), Teh (IPYTM), Cairo (Gameboys), Shin (3WBF), Inthawut (180DLPTU), and many more.

18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...

Currently, I feel some kinda way about how people keep looking for reasons to hate Patts in La Pluie, as if his ideal partner signalling is somehow to be mistrusted. It's just a bit sad for me that folks seem determined to hate the lead in this.

I don't really ever get second lead syndrome that often, so everyone on the Lomfon-Tai train confuses me. Lomfon is RUDE, and I do not fuck with that boy.

25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

Not a specific complaint, but I've said many times around here that I really hate when folks abuse the tools of criticism to say that they didn't like something. Y'all really don't need to pathologize why you don't like something and reach for flaws in the storytelling or production to justify why you don't like something.

We are a niche fandom. We are not seeing the huge sums of money poured into our productions that huge setpieces are going to get. Y'all need to show a little fucking grace to the creators bringing these things to us.

People like that often reach this same conclusion. Still, that man was very well-dressed. He had a handsome face, too. Didn’t seem like someone who’d be short on money or women. Dad wouldn’t approve of me judging through stereotypes, but… He didn’t seem like someone who’d drink poison with a courtesan out of despair for their future.)

妓女「彼は元々、問題の多い客だったの。妓女に甘い言葉をかけて身請けをほのめかしては、飽きたら捨てるを繰り返す。恨みばかり買って、逆上した女に刺されそうになったり、毒を盛られたこともあったわ。けど、豪商の父親に甘やかされて、ことあるごとに金で解決してた。最近では、親に頼んで、娼館まで護衛を付けて来ていたわ。この子の姉も、あの男に捨てられたの。これからは一緒に暮らせるって、喜んでいたのに…身請けの当日に、急に白紙にされて…だから、許せなかったんだと思う。今回一緒に毒を飲んだ子にも、懐いていたから」

Courtesan “It’s the courtesan who fell for him."

猫猫「それで心中騒ぎとなれば、娼館としては頭が痛い話ですね」

Maomao “In that case, I suppose word of a double suicide would make matters worse for the brothel.”

猫猫（うん、ちゃんと入ってる。案の定、口止め料まで…でもなんだか引っかかる。話からして、男はかなりしたたかだ。そんな男が、惚れた腫れたで心中など起こすものだろうか）

Courtesan “The courtesan who drank the poison today was close to her as well.”

猫猫「なるほど。器に紅が移らないように使うのか」

Maomao “Naruhodo. Utsuwani beniga utsura-naiyoni tsukau-noka.”

Maomao “I see, it prevents the lipstick from getting on the cup.”

猫猫（これは心中じゃない。殺人だ。水に溶かしたもの…麦稈…種類の違う2色の酒…）

Maomao (Korewa shinjuja nai. Satsujinda. Mizuni tokashita mono… Mugiwara… Shuruino chigau ni-shokuno sake…)

Maomao (This wasn’t a double suicide. It was murder. Poisoned water, wheat stalks, two separate drinks with different colors…)

Maomao “I know.”

猫猫（心中じゃなく殺人。しかも、殺そうとしたのは妓女のほうだ。犯行に使われたのは、タバコを漬けた毒の酒。しかし、護衛を付けるほど用心深くなっている男に、どうやって毒酒を飲ませたのか…簡単だ。毒見をして見せればいい。

妓女が無事なら、男は酒を口にする。しかし、実際に毒の酒を飲めば、女も無事では済まない。そこで道具を使った。酒は2種類、器は1つ。酒は、中身が違えば、濃さや重さが違う。重い酒の上に、軽い酒をゆっくり注げば、層ができて、見た目が良い。客を喜ばせる小ネタとして使えば…怪しまれることなく、妓女は下の層だけを麦稈で飲んでみせた。妓女も、上澄みの酒を飲んだ。死なないように、少しの量を。自分も死んでしまえば、元も子もない。男が死に、自分が生き残る計算を考えた上で、朝方に事を起こしたのだろう。そして都合よく、それを発見する人間がいた。儚げだが、それでいてしたたかだ。）

Maomao (Shinjuja naku satsujin. Shikamo, korosoto shita-nowa gijono hoda. Hankoni tsukawareta-nowa, tabako’o tsuketa dokuno sake. Maomao (Murder, not a double suicide. And it’s the courtesan who tried to kill the man, using drinks laced with tobacco poison. But the man was cautious enough to have guards around. How did she get him to drink the poison? Simple. She took a sip as well. If the courtesan was safe, the man would drink, too. But if she drank the poison, she’d be in danger herself. That’s why she used a trick. Two drinks, one cup. Different drinks have varying thicknesses and weights. By pouring a lighter drink slowly over a heavy drink, you can create a pretty-looking, layered drink. She used that as a small parlor trick to impress her guest. Then, she used the wheat stalk to drink just the lower layer, without raising suspicion. Afterwards, she drank from the upper layer as well. Just a little bit, so it wouldn’t kill her. She didn’t want to end up dead herself. She did the act in the morning to increase the odds that he would die, and she would survive. And conveniently, someone came to witness it. She appeared fragile, but she’s actually quite clever.”

禿「姐さん、何やってるの？寝てなきゃダメ！」

Kamuro “Neesan, nani yatteruno? Netenakya dame!”

Serving girl “What are you doing, Big Sis? You should stay in bed!”

猫猫（禿の行動は、どこかおかしかった。男を手遅れにするために、わざわざ医者ではなく薬屋を訪ね、おやじを呼ぶのにも時間をかけた。そこに姐ちゃんへの心配はなかったのだろうか。実の姉と同じように、また親しい者が死ぬとは考えなかったのだろうか。まるで、死なないと分かって行動しているようだった…なんて、考えすぎだろうか。そして、禿にやたら同情的な妓女。金払いのいい、やり手婆。怪しいと思ったら、いくらでも怪しいと思えてしまう。もしやみんな…ハア、憶測でものを言っちゃいけないか…）

Maomao (Kamurono kodowa, dokoka okashi-katta. Otoko’o teokureni suru-tameni, waza-waza isha-dewa naku kusuriyao tazune, oyajio yobuno-nimo jikan’o kaketa. Sokoni, neechan’eno shinpaiwa nakattano-daroka. Jitsuno aneto onaji-yoni, mata shitashii monoga shinu-towa kangae-nakattano-daroka. Marude, shinanaito wakatte kodo shite-iru yo-datta… nante, kangae-sugi daroka. Soshite, kamuroni yatara dojo-tekina gijo. Kane-baraino ii, yarite-babaa. Maomao (The servant girl did behave a bit strangely. In order to make sure the man didn’t survive, she went to an apothecary, not a doctor. She even took her time bringing my dad over. Wasn’t she worried that her ‘Big Sis’ would die? Wasn’t she worried that someone close to her would die again, like her real sister? It’s almost as if she knew the courtesan would survive. Or am I over-thinking this? In addition, the other courtesan was sympathetic to the servant girl. Plus, the very generous madam… Once I start doubting, there’s no stopping. Could they all have been… I shouldn’t speak based on conjecture.)

猫猫（ずっと帰りたかった花街も、本質は後宮と変わらない。花園であり、鳥かごだ。みんな、閉じこもった空気に毒されていく。妓女も、周りの毒を食らうことで、甘い毒へと変わっていく。あの妓女がどうなるのかは分からない。ドラ息子が毒を飲まされたと訴えるかもしれないし、逆に娼館側が商品を台無しにされたと脅すかもしれない。…どちらでもいい。そんなことをいちいち考えていては、この街で生きていけない）

Maomao (Zutto kaeri-takatta hana-machimo, honshitsuwa kokyuto kawaranai. Hanazonode ari, torikagoda. Minna, tojikomotta kukini dokusarete-iku. Gijomo mawarino dokuo kurau-kotode, amai dokueto kawatte-iku. Ano gijoga do naruno-kawa wakaranai. Maomao (I really missed this pleasure district, but in essence, it’s no different from the rear palace. It’s both a garden and a cage. The stale, trapped air poisons everyone. Meimei “That’s too bad. You just got back. Everyone was worried when you suddenly went missing. Pairin, Joka, and even the old lady.”

Meimei “She acted like usual, right? It’s because you came back.”

Pairin “Mo kaecchau-nante, zan’nen-dawaaa. Nee? Rihaku-sama?”

Pairin “I’m so sad to see you go so soon! Right? Master Lihaku?”

李白「やは～、実に残念だ」

Rihaku “Yahaaa, jitsuni zan’nenda.”

Lihaku “Yes! I’m so sad, too!”

猫猫（いい夢見れたみたいだな…一度天上の甘露を知れば、地上には戻れない。きっと、生かさず殺さず、搾り取られることだろう…とは��え、前払いで足りなかった銀を補うのは私だ）

Maomao “He seemed very happy. I worked hard, so I’m pleased with myself.”

Here is part two of my manga list! This time, it's all about cats!

Yokai Cats

This series is very easy to read, and it also teaches you about yokai from Japanese folklore. The cats in this manga are based on a variety of yokai, and they even have the same gimmicks as their ancient counterparts!

Favorite Character: Shiro

Junji Ito's Cat Diary

This is the very first Junji Ito book I've ever read. It mixes the cute with the creepy, and it's also an autobiography about the author and his wife taking care of their cats. I really appreciate how Ito uses horrific elements for comedy to show how wild his cats are.

Chi's Sweet Home and Chi's Sweet Adventures

Chi's Sweet Home is the most popular cat manga to ever exist, and it's very cute! This series is soft and peaceful, so that's why it made me feel warm inside. Chi is probably the most adorable cat I've ever seen in fiction.

Chi's Sweet Adventures is a spinoff, and it was just as good. It was also very easy to read, and the way the panels were positioned reminded me of the ones in Yokai Cats. It also counts as a timeskip because Yohei, the only child in the Yamada family, is a bit older now.

Favorite Characters: Chi and Blackie

Sue and Tai-Chan

This is another series by Konami Kanata, who is the creator of Chi's Sweet Home. It takes place in a different household, and it tells the tale of an old cat and an energetic kitten forming a bond. It's just as heartfelt (and silly) as Chi's Sweet Home, and the titular characters are basically Chi and Blackie with the roles reversed.

Favorite Character: Tai-chan

I see from your previous post that you probably don’t have a very high opinion of Raven and Taiyang. Could I tease those thoughts out? Thoughts on Phoenix and what their pre-canon relationship could’ve looked like?

i mean okay let me just start point blank with i dont care about team strq. i truly do not care.

-summer up until v9 has had approximately No Importance to the story beyond tropey dead parent backstory. and now shes a liar who (unintentionally) framed ozpin, and favored her birth daughter over yang (at least in my eyes by virtue of leaving her emblem to ruby and nothing to yang)

-raven was never all that interesting to me back in the day beyond a cool design that seemed like a genderbent adam tbh and then when we did get to know her she was genuinely someone i wondered if the writers were TRYING to make her stupid on purpose. and NOW shes a massive fucking hypocrite who ALSO framed ozpin and she and summer heavily contributed to the reason the mains didnt trust ozpin which spiraled into them not trusting ironwood and well we saw where that went

-qrow was easily and obviously the best due to being the only one that actually mattered but theyve sanded off his flaws and uniqueness over time to where i kinda hope he gets killed off soon bc i cant stand to see him either get with robyn or get the shiro voltron treatment where he gets with some no name guy to appease fair game shippers.

-and tai... hes point blank a terrible parent, to where qrow "i was raised by bandits and have a bad luck semblance and crippling alcoholism" had to be the dad that stepped up. hes not a good teacher, he seemingly didnt give a shit about ruby, a teenager, trekking across the world with only other teenagers he didnt know despite knowing that a) his first lover was in mistral and kills huntsmen and b) his second lover was presumably killed for her silver eyes, the trait ruby shares, he apparently never talked with yang about her semblance despite being their teacher at signal and it took her maiming another student on live television and her nearly dying in a terrorist attack to actually talk to her? he sucks lol

like i know ppl want team strq backstory and while i would prefer that over the fucking justice league crossover, i simply do not care at this point

ALL THAT TO SAY. raven and tai and summers dynamic is Weird to me? like he moved on from raven So Fast and ravens motivations are so stupid i cant. she says "the tribe is our family" and then we see the 'tribe' and its literally like a gang of criminals that live in tents and steal and murder people. they never show us anything that makes me understand why raven would want to go back to them? even if theyre ""family"" theyre shitty??? idk

I am not sure if you are feeling okay, but you can respond when you feel better. Thanks to you I was able to get into the Onmyoji Mobile Game and play it. It requires a lot of grinding and I spend a lot of time leveling up my Shikigami.

Also I see that you are a fan of Kidomaru. Netease does not seem to be doing much with him right now despite the fact that he was Shuten Doji's son and Orochi's grandson in Japanese Mythology and the fact Orochi seems to play an major role as a villain in the story too so it could establish connections between the characters. It is controversial to say if changing the character's lineage from his mythical counterpart is all right or not even though this has not been confirmed or denied in the game. I also heard that they will not let him interact with Seimei or he will barely interact with Seimei despite the fact that they are both mixed race and share a past together and his supposed love interest Enmusbi is travel with Seimei.

NOOOO IT MAKES ME SOOOOOOOO MAD KING YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. most of my circle hates kido so i just kind of sit in the corner and fume about him but NE did him so fucking poorly 😭😭😭😭 his parallels and past with both kuro and shiro seimei is the most interesting fucking dynamic in the game. i go fucking insane thinking about his experience as a mixed race, non-passing person being villified and ostracized until he conforms to their expectations vs seimei as a "passing" mixed race person succeeding as long as he is able to suppress his identity and kill that half of himself. then he ends up fucking blowing up and splitting himself in half anyway to cope w the trauma and suppression that he had to force onto himself. there are a lot if hills i will die on about this game but the "kido isnt actually evil" hill is a lot taller than the rest. hes a fucking FASCINATING case study on racial alienation and how it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy like they fucking reinvented the racial pipeline with fantasy racism and every time someone calls him horrible or evil i want to attack them like a wild dog. sure he did some fucked up shit. i will accept calling him evil ONLY if we hold Every Single Other Character in the game to that standard. who is going after seimei for this shit. why is tadayuki blameless. who is calling shuten a mass murdering freak for his actions. taishakuten committed atrocities that make kidomaru look like a 2 month old puppy in comparison and we STILL have 284729 tai apologists crawling out of the woodwork to explain that He Isnt Evil Actually. shit is just frustrating!

Shiro and Kenji from What Did You Eat Yesterday? - I love how grounded they and their friends feel. I like that their relationship doesn’t feel perfect, and that it feels like they are trying to do the best they can for each other. 

Cheep and Dej from My Ride. Like the previous pair, I am a sucker for older queer men maintaining long term relationships with their partners, and those relationships leaving behind a wake of goodness behind them. 

Cario and Gavreel from Gameboys.  These two are a phenomenal pair, and I enjoyed the nuances of their development, particularly as a pandemic story in both seasons. They’re also explicitly vers, and we love that.
