Part 2 in my series of rewatching my favorite 90s/early 00’s shows. (click here to see Daria’s sketch)
Home Movies is such a delight. The dialogue is fantastic, and the vibe of making your own little cinematic masterpieces out of cardboard and dreams as a kid is spot on.
It’s made by Loren Bouchard and Brendon Small. Loren Bouchard then did Bob’s Burgers, which shares the voice actor of H. Jon Benjamin as Coach McGuirk here and Bob Belcher in Bob’s Burgers. Brendon Small (who is also the main character in this show, also named Brendon Small) went on to make Metaloclypse.

I think it would be funny if everyone manages to escape the Digital Circus in the end and they don't want Caine's AI to trap any more people so they somehow manage to drag him to the human world with them. Now the tables have turned and it's Caine's turn to be absolutely flabbergasted by reality and his new human body.

me and my dad are like abed and jeff in the way that jeff always gets abeds references, theyre two characters that mirror eachother, they understand and relate to eachother in a way thats different from other characters relationships, but also in the way jeff fantasises about strangling abed, "you try to get him to do something normal without abusing him!", "youre a robot, abed". and still jeff goes in for two hugs before abed leaves.

I am on record disliking "centrist" LXC jokes, because they have been disproven by canon analysis already in better essays than I can manage right now, but I also don't buy "I can fix him" jokes!
Rather than "I can fix him" syndrome, LXC's attitude (towards everyone: his brother! his friends! his uncle!) reads to me as "I want to do good and make the best of our circumstances (within my power)". That means, for example, encouraging Wangji to make friends but still following sect rules when it comes to punishment. It means supporting his brilliant friend's ambition and making sure his angry friend doesn't kill him first.
None of those things include fixing, because I don't think he is under any illusion that Clarity will fix NMJ - he'd have to change his way of thinking, first, and LXC canonically has given up on this or never even entertained the thought (as shownfor example when he does not argue further in front of NMJ's mulish responses about JGY's abuse in Jinlintai, or when he has to concede to NMJ and other sect leaders clamoring for the Wen slaughter).
As for JGY? He does not need fixing, and LXC is the first to recognize that. His goals are worthy and his methods, well... are often the only ones available to him. So what he needs from LXC is just support and understanding, and tbh JGY gives back as much and more than he gets (as shown in canon with the rebuilding of CR, being his confidant, etc.) So LXC does not try to change him, because he believes in the man he is now and in his overarching goals being in line with the greater good.
Basically, LXC does not try to change JGY because he believes him to be right, and he does not try to change NMJ because he knows he won't listen. So I don't get where this headcanon of LXC as the "I can fix him" man comes from when he is just a decent guy who helps the people he cares about, supports his little brother's unwise decisions and protects him from repercussions, provides palliative musical therapy to his friend who is bound to die regardless, and is emotionally present for the man he loves even when he cannot do anything else but offer him a handkerchief in times of struggle.
Basically, "I can fix him" implies a naivete and a rejection of the reality of their circumstances that is in fact not in line with Lan Xichen's canonical diplomatic skills and emotional intelligence.

I don't blame people for not knowing, IH did a lot of rebranding after all, but IH is definitely at least right-leaning. Alt-lite, if you will, where he doesn't say too much blatantly alt right stuff Tucker Carlson style (put a pin to this) but if you know the dogwhistles, you'll realize that he's just better at hiding his political tendencies. A cryptofascist, if you will. I knew because a) well, look at his fans and b) I was a fan since his very beginning, when he just released the Dashcon video and also back when I unfortunately was right-leaning anti-SJW. And boy looking back there were a lot of dogwhistles I was familiar with.
Take a look at the bikelock video (still up to this day!) where even outside of the blatant 1488 reference it's clear he's not fond of antifas. Or the HWNDU video where it's just /pol/ wankery and lots of clips of people being very antisemitic being shown uncritically. The most blatant proof of him being alt-lite is the deleted Seize video that hbomb mentioned. He admitted he watched Tucker Carlson (!!!), he put a clearly anti-semitic username on display and even said it, and he did racist caricature of Japanese people. Clearly too much bigotry for an alt-lite so he deleted it.
Again, these aren't blatant alt-right declaration like say, Sargon of Akkad or Stefan Molyneux (yeah remember that piece of shit). But put the pieces scattered across his videos together and you have someone very fond of right-leaning ideology. But with enough plausible deniability so when people brought it up he'll have an army of defenders saying stuff like "duuuhhhhh 14/88 is just a number triggered much" or "these r 5 years ago he changed!!!!!!1!". Lol if he truly changed he would've denounce his fans' antisemitism but he didn't do anything.

Sometimes people are like "I feel like you really get c!Tubbo" and it's like no you don't understand NO ONE gets c!Tubbo okay No One. There are some people that come pretty close I've seen people capture 80-95% of c!Tubbo before but NO ONE truly gets him not even cc!Tubbo. He has so many layers he contains so many multitudes he is so fleshed out and real and multifaceted no one will ever truly Get c!Tubbo. I could literally study him for years and spend a decade trying to capture him in a fic and still not get it right. He's the best character ever written do you understand

Have you heard Millie's recent comments? Are you worried that we have lost the war and Byler is bones? As a Byler who has been in the trenches for so long, I think the end may be here for real this time. This time it feels different. I don't wanna prove the Milkvans right and say "it's PR" because that sounds delusional. I wanna cry.
Yes, I’ve heard them! No, I’m not worried “we’ve lost the war.” Byler is NOT bones. I’m 95% certain you’re an undercover Melvin, but even if you are, I know there are Bylers on Tumblr and elsewhere who do feel doubt because of Millie’s comments.
But stand up! Have no fear! I understand the worry of being queerbaited, but Millie’s words (during a conference where she apparently also said she ships Byler, I might add) should NOT be the cause. (I do think the comments were worded strangely in general cause when has Millie ever “spread rumors of Byler”?) Millie’s comments will literally be forgotten about tomorrow, just like all the other “slightly concerning” comments Noah, Finn, and other actors have made in the past.
I understand this might “feel different” cause Millie mentioned the Duffers this time around. But each time people have said the exact same things (“It’s over!”), but do you remember any of those concerning comments or when they were said? Exactly. We are ~ TWO years away from S5. There’s so much time. We’re in this for the long haul. It’s not even a matter of, “Oh, it’s PR” or “No, it’s 100% real,” it’s a matter of having perspective. There will be comments that will spark joy and comments that will not, but we really can’t let every random comment made at a conference send us into a spiral. Nothing has changed. All our analysis, media literacy, and evidence hasn’t suddenly evaporated. We all watched this scene on our screens:
Tumblr media
The only way I wouldn’t believe in Byler endgame is if The Duffers released a formal, official statement saying that Byler definitively wasn’t happening and apologizing for misleading us. But that won’t happen. And random comments from Millie or Noah or anyone else is not equivalent.
I’ll just leave this here:

the problem i have with a lot of ed characterization in fanworks that i PERSONALLY can't latch onto is that edward just isn't like...funny. he's not that kinda guy. he's got an attitude and is blunt to a fault and has a too much of a mouth on him for his own good, but he isn't like, a goofball. the humor he often brings is a result of him being an hot-tempered utter ass with a extreme disdain for authority OR dicking around with his brother. ("i'm going to do something illegal so look away") alphonse however. alphonse is funny. alphonse has bits.

about the copyright stuff.. do you think if someone gave complete legal consent for approval of use in an episode (with legal documents giving them permission/ ownership of the material) do you think they could use fanfic/au ideas then? wouldn’t that work around the copyright protections or is that not possible because even then if the person tried to sue or wanted to they couldn’t since it would be in their ownership (rcg) technically.
I don't know enough about the intricacies of copyright and intellectual property law to really say I'm giving you a professional answer, but if a contract was involved relinquishing ownership and/or claims, I'm pretty sure, yes.
In all honestly, I would go as so far as to say just a blanket statement that you relinquish all your right, title, and interest to any original plot, ideas, and/or dialogue in your story would do it. Similar to how some studios or writers have had contests or promotional things fans can submit their fan works to, if you tick a box and say you read and agree to the terms and conditions (normally being you relinquish your right to any monetary claims if they use your work), that's all there is to it. So yeah, if RCG wanted to do some kind of "fan written" or fan-contributed episode they absolutely could.
Just to restate: the refusal of creators and writers engaging with fanfiction due to copyright issues is really when it's put upon them: a fan hands them something or DMs them. That, they basically straight up know/are trained to refuse and not to engage with. When it comes to something more organic, like imagining a creator looking through Ao3 or ff.net, the extremely low likelihood that they are going to do that is because they know it is a very murky area they can easily dupe or hurt themselves walking into. They're supposed to actively avoid it, and most do, but if you want to think (or even strongly believe) your guy is browsing fics when he's bored as hell flying back and forth from LA to Wales multiple times a month, slap a little release on your work, if you want (Sometimes you see release disclaimers on other people's fanfiction. Though a lot of the time it's just a rejection of ownership because people are paranoid they can get in trouble for publishing fanfiction...lmfao).
