His name means "the way of writing" as his mom was a fan of japanese calligraphy

Has tattoos on both of his forearms with a symbol for each fear entity

Shodo's first kind of experience with the entities would have been the death of his dad who died due to fear stuff yoohoo. But he was too young to get affected by it and lived quite fine with his mom only. Until (yeah it is the cliche oc creator being evil) his mom started to become lowkey paranoid (I don't think I want this to be related with the fears tho ... shockers ik) and she would start hanging up a bunch of charms for protections and etc. At that time shodo had to take care of her mainly, The only moment she looked calm was when shodo would tell her story or when doing calligraphy with him.

Skip forward she dies :)

Propper encounter with the fears for the first time would be around his college years. When his friend gets a Leitner and he sees that all go downhill. Seeing the possibilities of such a book inspires and fascinates him and he then starts to find ways to recreate such books himself.

Research, practice and close death encounters with fears lead to him managing.

He proceeds, making them for the sake of creating and/or by commission.

He has heard them being referred to as Leitners, but as soon as he figured out why and that it is basically to some Norwegian dude who only collects them, he finds the name choice odd etc etc (he is not impressed by said Norwegian book collector)

He also knows that there is someone who hunts such books (his included) and destroys them, yet is not bothered in any way. The joy is in creating after all, well, according to him. (They shall meet, and he shall become Gerry's "worst" nightmare) [also yes I am lowkey, perhas gonna ship these two hehe, lovers to enemies hehe]

He adopted a straycat named kaikoga (silkworm moth)

it's so terminally strange, how deeply i don't relate to clout. and the whole wide world out there, seems to transact on these clout grounds. I must stay strong, compose myself. I have discovered i'm only 100% relaxed when i'm 100% immersed in the worlds and the people I love. There can be no room for rumination at all. it is the people and the objects in which i devote myself to, that provides me with the utmost relaxation. i lose myself here, i find myself here, i am the snake eating it's own tail here. the tail that i never quite see or catch, that moment of limitless infinitude, is there tranfixed in the existence in the other soul,spirit,object manifest. alcohol helps me there. but to be held in thrall. hold yourself in thrall, maryam. and how much more difficult it is here in montreal. in vanc, the mountains, clouds, ocean lining easly grasps me away. here the lines of sight are shallow. they permeate to concrete gravel sidewalk, low boxed buildings, cheaply made. crumbling infrastructure - it is only in the people where I lose myself, lose my anxiety into thyself, myself. tonite I touched on the tulum trip with talibah. I remember, on that trip, I had been in the grips of peril. of devastation. in other words, of anxiety. I hadn't been able to put a word to that I felt, but it was that - anxiety. Tali had been relaxed, she is a strong formidable character, and I was able to let go of myself slowly, trust myself unto her. but those moments of distrust ate me up completely. that was my first real confrontation with the monster called anxiety. and now I find myself swelling at the hands of that beast. the mind- layered like an onion. if my lateral , prefrontal cortex is immersed in reality, my median inner parts can be elsewhere. all the layers of the mind, and how easily one can manipulate a dermis layer from the epidermis - the part which confronts reality. meanwhile the dermis is on 5 different channels, bewildered, fear ridden, distracted, and the deep inner layer, steady as a still. when the whole of these layers is invested in the whole minutiae of the planet in front of me, be that a friend, a foe, a rock. I am relaxed. I must find myself there -- in the other, the other. and still my mind strays to tobin. the strange ways in which we meet, and we part. I do not subscribe to his outer layer. I operate on that inner layer, the turbulent wave within, between the rock and the hard shell. I seek that soft spot, within. It is not a currency - that. it is just a soul in operation. Not a currency at all.

Folk Alliance International Conference 2023 Highlights

MEMPHIS WAS THE FIRST “CITY OF HONOR”

KANSAS CITY, MO — The folk music old guard that dominated the Folk Alliance International conferences for the past 35 years has passed the guitar to a new generation that is younger, energized, and mostly female and non-white.

And the kids are all right.

In the BC years (before covid), the annual five-day conference that draws more than 1,000 musicians from around the world was largely the province of aging performers and music lovers.

This year, the beat has changed. Most of the performers were young, female, and non-white lending a whole new energy to the event that was held this past weekend in Kansas City. The LGBTQI community was also well-represented.

Memphis was everywhere, chosen as the “First City of Honor” with Memphis-oriented workshops, speakers, and a slew of talented performers including Amy LaVere, Bailey Biggers, Talibah Safiya, Yella P of Memphisissippi Sound, violinist Alice Hasen and the brilliant Aquarian Blood.

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, poet, and actor Valerie June astounded with her keynote speech that said love and hope can defeat hate and fear.

As she spoke about the global crisis, the “technological hacking of the human mind and body” and nuclear war, she abruptly stopped and flashed her trademark smile. She walked to center stage, picked up a banjo, and played a delicate version of “What A Wonderful World” in defiance of the doomsayers.

Wherever she walked she was treated like royalty. Women and children rushed up and hugged her.

She now lives in Brooklyn but said she would always consider Memphis her home.

Like the rest of us, June went from concert to concert to hear the young artists.

The annual gathering is designed to allow music critics, agents, disc jockeys, and concert and festival bookers to get up close and personal with new artists and discover new talent.

It’s also a chance for singers and musicians to strut their stuff in the smaller, intimate venues of the Westin Hotel and gather new fans. There are organized workshops and concerts during the day and evening, though much of the action started at 10:30 p.m. and continued almost to daybreak in hundreds of hotel rooms converted into makeshift music spots. Sometimes a performer played for just one or two people, a memorable experience.

There were a few older performers here, like Tom Paxton and Janis Ian, who acted in more of a non-performing, advisory capacity. Ian received a well-deserved lifetime achievement award. Paxton said he was just there to be inspired by the young people.

Instead of the usual performances by folk icons like Livingston Taylor, John McCutcheon and Eliza Gilkyson, visitors chose between blues singers from Memphis, storytellers from Ireland, brash bands from Australia, and new Americana voices from everywhere,

The toughest challenge is choosing who to see since every concert choice means missing hundreds of other mini-concerts going on elsewhere.

In one, Josh White Jr. seemed a little baffled when his co-performer, 92-year-old jazz genius, composer, and orchestra conductor David Amram asked him to play “House of the Rising Sun” a second time. But he smiled and acquiesced.

Amram impulsively invited young musicians he just met hours earlier to join them. Violinist Rahel-Liis Aasrand of Estonia and percussionist Natalia Miranda from Guatemala nervously joined Amram and White in an impromptu jazz number, as if they had played together for years.

Amy Lavere has a voice much larger than her lithe frame which was dwarfed by the stand-up bass she played. Her voice is at once sweet and powerful and her accompanying guitarist and violinist could not have been better.

Alice Hasen and showed just how versatile the violin could be, switching gears from classical to folk to almost hip-hop.

There was music around every corner. In one room, Brit Shane Hennessey played an instrumental tribute to Chet Atkins. In another, the laid-back Aquarian Blood’s J.B. Horrell played the guitar upright between his knees while his wife, Laurel, sang along.

And the talent goes on and on, stretching out through the halls and into the early morning hours as it expands the definition of folk music far, far beyond the notion of a guy with a guitar.
