u said 2 do ur worst for shy!r so…. steve and reader go to the hawkins snowball dance and a slow song comes on and its a uber romantic song (i’m talking taylor swift type romance) and steve ofc asks r to dance… she’s super shy so she keeps looking at the floor but then steve does the thing where you lift the other persons chin up so they’re looking into ur eyes… if u wanna elaborate on this :)
i changed this up a wee bit, but i hope u like it! — when steve is finally crowned prom king, all he can think about is getting a dance with his (sorta) secret girlfriend (shy!fem!r, hurt/comfort, 1.2k)
Steve abandons his crown and scepter somewhere between the bleachers and the snack table. The thought of finding you is far more important than the chunks of plastic they give him.
The cold breeze of the early evening cools his warm cheeks, flushed red from the adrenaline and the alcohol. He finds you sitting on the wooden bench outside the gymnasium, pretty and all alone. The skirt of your fairy-tale dress billows around your calves. Elbows digging into your thighs, you prop your chin on your fists and pout softly beneath the pale moonlight.
You’re the prettiest thing Steve’s ever seen. The saddest, too, maybe.
“Been looking for you,” he says to announce his presence. The lopsided smile on his face is audible. You know it’s dancing on his pink mouth before you ever turn around to face him.
He’s a pretty thing in a sleek tux. Boyishly handsome. Sort of like he’s playing dress-up. The thought almost makes you smile.
“Sorry,” you apologize in a mousy voice, blinking up at him with sparkly, made-up eyes when he looms over you. “It got… really loud in there…”
“Well, Tommy spiked the punch, so… It was kinda inevitable,” Steve jokes with a lazy shrug, even though he isn’t really joking.
He watched the idiot steal his dad’s best liquor from the high-up cabinet two hours ago. The Hawkins High class of ’85 got drunk on it in record time. The school pulses with life accordingly. The brick behind you threatens to shake with it.
Your nose scrunches. “Is that why it tasted like gasoline?”
“Probably,” Steve grins.
He huffs and sits at the spare spot next to you. The old bench creaks in protest. He takes his first good breath all night when he’s finally alone with you. The fresh air and your perfume fill his lungs, smoother than silk. There’s a subtle euphoria and a distant nostalgia between it all.
He’s spent years chasing this feeling. He thought maybe being crowned prom king would solve all his problems. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. ‘Cause you did.
“You coming back inside?”
Your lips purse to the side of your mouth as you ponder the question. “I don’t know… Probably not.”
Steve’s freshly shaven face swirls with visible confusion. He loves a party — especially when he’s the life of it — so it’s hard for him to comprehend how other people don’t. Even though he knows, more than anyone else, that you’re made of something much more delicate than that.
“Why not?”
“Prom’s not really my scene, Steve,” you answer with a scoffed-out laugh.
He flashes you a crooked smile in return, painted silver in the moonlight. His cologne swaddles you in its musk when he leans over to nudge your shoulder. “You promised me a dance, remember?”
Your soft features harden into a frown. “Absolutely not.”
“Oh, c’mon! You know you wanna dance with me,” he protests through a poorly bitten-back laugh.
“Why?” you press, meeting his beam with a lighthearted scowl. “So all your friends can laugh at me?”
“Screw ‘em! They’re assholes— who cares?”
“I care. ‘Cause you’re not the one they’re laughing at, King Steve.”
You spit the stupid nickname with playful venom in your tone, but Steve can’t help but smile at it, anyway. He’s a week away from graduating, halfway employed, and Hawkins High’s reigning prom king. It’s all slightly maddening — especially now that he’s got you.
He wonders if you applauded when he won that stupid crown. If you laughed at him about it, or if you were strangely proud. He’ll ask you about it later. After he gets that dance.
“Let ‘em laugh,” he shrugs.
You shake your head, averting your gaze with a sad smile. You wish it were that easy.
“You don’t know what it’s like,” you tell him as the heavy bass inside the school starts to slow. Through the high-up frosted windows, you hear Girls on Film fade into Never Tear Us Apart.
“Sorry for wanting to dance with my girlfriend,” he teases to ease the tension. It comes out more serious than he intended, though, ‘cause he is sort of sorry. Nothing about your two worlds exactly meshes — yet here he is, still hopelessly trying to tangle them together.
You know this, so you sigh. “Sorry for not being prom queen,” you joke back, only partly serious. You blink at him with a pair of twinkling eyes — slightly smudged with mascara. The sparkles of your eyeshadow glint when they catch the moonlight.
“Don’t want you to be prom queen,” Steve confesses softly, smiling at you somehow softer. “I like you the way you are right now.”
You get a warm, tingly feeling in your stomach. It wells up your chest and into your throat until you feel like you might cry.
You roll your eyes at him when they start to burn, laughing softly to distract from the overwhelming feeling. Your gaze flits to the velvet night sky, speckled with twinkling stars, until you get the courage to look back at the boy beside you. His face glitters with something hopeful.
You swallow hard and ask, “You still want that dance or what?”
Steve glows with a boyish excitement. “Yeah! Are you kidding? Of course, I do.”
“Out here, though,” you tell him when he rises from the bench.
He smiles at the stern look in your delicate eyes. “Why? You ashamed of me or somthin’?” he jokes, as if he wasn’t named just prom king.
You stand before him with your arms crossed over the pretty corset of your dress. You bite back a smile. “I just wanna spend time with my boyfriend without it being on the cover of The Weekly Streak tomorrow,” you confess.
“Fair enough,” Steve nods, smoothing his wide hands over your sides.
Yours are much less confident. They tremble with a misplaced worry as they spread over his shoulders. Your fingers fidget on the satin lapels of his expensive suit. His longer ones guide you back and forth, swaying you gently to the slow beat of the muffled song.
—Don’t ask me, what you know is true…
Don’t have to tell you, I love your precious heart—
You get lost in it all before you mean to. The warmth of having him so close, swaddled in his big hands and deep cologne.
His honeyed gaze hasn’t yet wavered from you, but you don’t have the heart to meet it. He’s looking at you like he loves you. Like you’re the prettiest thing he’s ever seen. Like you’re the fucking prom queen.
You don’t feel particularly deserving of any of it.
“Are you still having fun?” you ask with a scrunched nose, visibly riddled with feelings of inadequacy. You still haven’t quite figured out why he’d rather be out here with you than inside with everyone else — with Vicki Carmichael, the actual prom queen.
“Loads,” Steve answers without missing a beat. His hands squeeze reassuringly at your hips as he flashes you a crooked grin. “It’s not even a question, honestly. I’d choose you over those schmucks in there any day of the week.”
He nods his slicked-back hair to the pulsing brick a few feet away. A few gelled chestnut strands drape over his forehead. You fight the urge to push them back.
“Really?” you squeak with your pretty face, all dolled up, twisted with an innocent look of confusion.
You have no idea how beautiful you are, Steve thinks to himself.
“Yeah,” he nods, grinning wide and wearing all his adoration on his chiseled, golden face. He could hide it if he tried. “Tommy Hagan isn’t nearly as pretty to look at.”

A/N: I'm not sure I got any light fluff in there but I certainly did make it angst 💀 thank you for the request 💗
W/C: 1.7k
Summary: Six months into your secret relationship, you're beginning to think that maybe Spencer doesn't love you the way you love him
Warnings: toxic relationship, Spencer is an ass and then he's kinda really intense. Inspired by:
Here's my masterlist, and I'm currently working on a request challenge, so feel free to check that out too! 💗
Tumblr media
Six months of dating was about as long as you could stand before you knew that it wasn’t going anywhere if things didn’t change.
At first, you’d been on board with Spencer’s suggestion to keep your relationship secret for the first few weeks of dating. It made sense with you both working at the same place and on the same team, and you didn’t want to change the group dynamic. But weeks turned into months, and six months was a long time to wait for public recognition of a relationship that could be so much more than secret looks in the hallways and weekends wrapped up in each other.
Everytime he brushed you off whilst at work, you felt part of your heart cracking. The first time he’d done it was only days after your mutual confessions. You’d been alone in a police precinct on some case or the other, and, needing a moment to process your emotions, you grabbed his hand for support. He’d pulled his from your grip quickly, doing his best not to make the sudden movements, and if was like your world was crashing down on you. You’d confronted him that night in his hotel room, and he’d blown you off again.
“Y/N, we promised that this would stay between us for now. I’m sorry that I can’t be like other partners, and that I can’t give you what you need right now, but we can’t do… we can’t hold hands or kiss or seem any closer than we usually are to the others, okay?” He’d seemed so stressed you’d given in and backed down, but his words still stung.
Months of the same scenarios repeating themselves felt like purgatory though, and you knew that you needed to either cut him loose or make him confess to the others.
You hadn’t reached your tipping point when he’d got shot in the neck and forced you to stand on the sides. Just watching while other agents, agents who had known him longer, sure, but didn’t know how he felt, how he tasted, how his scent was enough to drive you crazy, fawned over him. They didn’t know that you would be so lost without him that you’d have gone insane if that bullet was in a different position. They didn’t know, and he didn’t care. He’d checked up on you in private, of course, but only when he was discharged.
“Spencer, what would you have done if that had been me?” you asked him, when he questioned you. He stood staring at you for a minute, really taking the time to think about the words, think about the scenario you’d just asked him to recreate in his mind. You’d fallen for him because he was so goddamned thoughtful, because he always took the time to think and find the correct answer when he was talking to you.
You wished then that he’d answered quicker. That it would have taken him less time to say that he would have been inconsolable, that he would’ve been lost without you, that he didn’t want to think about that ever happening at all.
He didn’t say any of those things.
“I’d do what you did. I’d have managed.” You’d wanted to scream at him then, but you didn’t. You just climbed into bed beside him and wrapped your arms around him as tightly as you could without hurting him. You fell asleep to the image of him being shot playing over and over again.
That had been three months into your relationship, and now with three more months of stolen kisses and antipathy, you’d reached your breaking point. Maybe it was the tension in the office from the latest case, maybe it was the detective openly flirting with you, but you certainly couldn’t control the explosion that had been brewing all this time.
From the beginning of the week, the lead detective on your case had been making it clear and obvious that he wanted to take you out. He was showing such obvious and tempting advances that even members of your team were approaching you in private to ask you to consider. It was hard to explain to Emily and Morgan that you weren’t interested in the man, and when even Garcia started encouraging you on a phone call to go after “Detective Dreamy,” you’d almost burst into tears.
Because throughout the advances, the obvious flirtation and the team banter, your boyfriend had not said a word either way. You weren’t sure what you actually wanted from him, because when he finally did say something, it was like he chose all the wrong words and strung them together in a sentence.
“So how are you enjoying all the attention from Detective McDermot?” he’d asked casually, not glancing up from the pile of documents he was scanning.
“What the hell is wrong with you, Reid?” you snapped. He looked at you in shock, completely oblivious that he’d said anything wrong.
“Aren’t you jealous? Isn’t there some part of you that wants to let him know that I’m taken?” the tears were filling your eyes in rage, and you angrily swiped them away before they fell, not wanting him to use them against you.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise that it was so upsetting to you. Do you want me to say something to him?”
“Do you want to say something to him? Because it only matters if you actually want to do it.”
“Y/N, that doesn’t even make sense.”
“We’re at work, Reid, you’d do well to remember that. In this office, it’s Agent Y/L/N, right?” you grabbed the file you were working on and left the room, but you weren’t getting away from him that easily.
“Y/N- Agent Y/L/N, wait,” he grabbed your wrist and pulled you into the nearest storage closet.
“We promised each other, we promised that we wouldn’t tell anyone for a while, why are you being like this?” He still had a strong grip on your wrist and the intimate size of the storage closet had forced you together, his body pushing against yours.
“What would you do? What would you do if I went out there and said I’d go on a date with him? Because right now, I’m getting concerned looks thrown at me by every member of the team because there must be something wrong with me if I’m turning him down.” The bitterness of your tone took him by surprise.
“Don’t do that, for gods sake, do not do that Y/N.”
“Give me one good reason. Scratch that, give me one explanation that I can give to get everyone off my back.” You pulled your wrist from his grip now, but he countered by grabbing your hips roughly and forcing you back into the wall, pinning you there. You couldn’t move, and you didn’t want to, intent on hearing his reply.
“You’re mine,” he said it so quietly that had you not been pressed up against the entire length of him, you wouldn’t have heard it. You let out a little giggle at his words.
“Fuck, Spencer, is that it? I’m yours?” you shook your head a little as his grip on you tightened, his head leaning down, forehead resting against yours as you shared in each breath he took in and let out.
“I can see that you don’t want to be in a public relationship with me, Spencer. You don’t want to tell people about us, and that’s… that’s going to have to be enough for me, but I’m not sure how long it’s going to be enough.”
“You don’t want to be with me anymore?” he asked after a minute, taking the time to calm himself before continuing.
“No, God, Spencer, I love you so fucking much, that is not the issue here.”
“Then what is? Because from where I’m standing, you’ve just suggested leaving me, leaving this.”
“You are so fucking self-possessed sometimes,” the words would probably have cut deeper had his lips not been mere centimeters from your own. “I’ll be clear. I love you and I want other people to know that I love you, and that maybe you love me, too.”
“But we talked about this before at the start-”
“And that was six months ago, Spencer. I need more now. And I’m honestly a little hurt that you don’t want more now.”
“I don’t want more?” He seemed genuinely surprised by the suggestion, and the hurt in his eyes stung for the few seconds he let it linger there. Instead of using his words to explain himself, he finally closed the gap between the two of you, pressing his lips into yours fervently.
The kiss was angry, hot. It was the feeling of being deep in an argument and knowing that you still had to fight your way out. Your lips clashed, your mouths opened and your tongues began fighting for dominance as he attempted to push his way inside of you, to make you feel the strength of his emotions that he clearly couldn’t talk through.
After a minute, you pushed him away, panting hard.
“I want more and more of you by the second. I want to wrap you up and possess you, I want to make it so that no one else can even look at you, I want to make it that I am the only person on this planet that can see you, and everytime I think that, I get so scared.” He spits each word at you, still lost in the venom of the moment.
“We fight monsters everyday, and each moment I spend with you, I feel like I can understand them more and more, because I think of you the same way they think about their victims. Does that not terrify you?”
You let your hands trail up his body and into his hair as he talks, feeling vindicated now that he is finally spilling his guts to you.
“So yes, our relationship is private, because if I got the opportunity to possess you in public, I do not know what I would do to anyone who looked at you, even if they are our closest friends.” He dropped his forehead to yours again, somehow heavier this time.
“You’re mine.”
You stood there, still for a minute gathering your thoughts before you spoke again.
“Are you going to tell them or not?” you breathed out, lowly, doing your best to not let your emotions get the better of you.
“We’ve been arguing in this closet for five minutes and twenty eight seconds, Y/N. If they’re good at their jobs, I won’t have to tell them.”

It’s still pouring, the rain is still rolling down your closed windows and the lightning continues to crash through the sky. You can’t fall asleep. You’ve been trying to since you came home, but you can’t. You thought a hot shower would help make you tired, but it didn’t. Now you’re laying in your bed, staring at the ceiling.
You are too giddy to fall asleep. Your heart is still racing. Your skin still feels on fire. You can’t even fight the smile off your face. You feel his hands on your body, his lips on your skin, him. You regret not letting him come home with you. Your bed has never felt emptier. You turn to look at the telephone on your nightstand, contemplating giving him a call but you decide against it when you take a look at the clock, it’s 3am. He must be sleeping already.
Your eyes fall on the picture that wiped the smile off your face when you walked into your room earlier. A sigh falls from your lips. You need to talk to him. You need to talk to Steve.
This night has changed everything.
Your feelings have changed. They have evolved into something even bigger. You have been aware of your feelings for Eddie for a while now, but you never let them out completely. You were too afraid, too scared to get rejected, too scared to lose him because you once again, couldn’t stop yourself from falling for your best friend.
Your best friend who wants you just as much as you want him.
Your stomach flutters and a smile tugs at your lips – your lips that are still tingling from the feeling of all the kisses. You touch them, closing your eyes as you picture him, the way he held you, the way he said your name, the way he couldn’t get enough of you, the way he was so proud to call himself yours. He’s been dreaming about this, he’s been dreaming about you for months.
You never thought that you could feel this way again. You never thought that you could smile again at the thought of someone else. You never thought that you would love again.
Not after him.
Steve had shattered your heart in a million pieces. He stripped you of your powers. He took everything away from you. He made you doubt yourself and everyone around you. You suffered for weeks and months, not knowing how to keep going, not knowing how to get out of bed every morning. You stopped eating. You stopped reading. You lost your joy in the things you used to love doing. You felt so lost and hopeless but you forced yourself to keep going. It felt like learning how to walk again.
But you weren’t alone, you had the people who cared for you.
But most importantly, you had him. Eddie was there. Eddie was there for you, every step of the way. He never left, not even on your worst days. He was there, he was always there and he stayed.
Your heart skips a beat and your chest fills with warmth when you think of all the times he cheered you up and gave you a shoulder to cry on. When he took care of you despite you not asking him to. He stopped by the coffee shop every morning to get you a coffee and some breakfast, sometimes he came late to school because of it but he didn’t care. He’d take you out to the diner, knowing that you haven’t been eating, he brought you your favorite snacks for movie nights. He knew you were struggling to eat and he did everything to help you without pressuring you to talk about something that he knew would make you uncomfortable.
He gave you the reassurance that you needed.
He took care of you in ways no one else ever did.
And he never asked for anything back either.
He just did it because he wanted to, because he cares about you, because you mean something to him, because you always meant something to him, because you were always something more than a friend to him and he always wanted what’s best for you. All while watching you pine after a guy who broke your heart. He even gave you hope that maybe, you and Steve could find your way back to each other someday – all just because he wanted you to be happy.
You don’t know what comes over you, but tears well up in your eyes.
Eddie always just wanted you to be happy.
You sit up, no longer wanting to wait for the next day to come, you need to see him now.
You throw the cover off your body, your bare feet hit the soft carpet. Your hair is still a little wet from the shower you took but you couldn’t care less. You turn on the light on your nightstand before you rush over to your closet and pick out a sweater, not bothering to change into jeans or a skirt, you leave your plaid pajama pants on and throw the black sweater over your head.
Your heart is pounding in excitement when you think about how he kissed you before you left, how he didn’t want to leave, how he wanted more and more. You can’t wait to do it again. You can’t wait to pull him into a kiss, to hug him, to tell him what you should’ve told him a long time ago.
You take a look in the mirror, smoothing out your hair a little, you put perfume on your skin before you turn around and leave your room, slowly creeping down the stairs, not wanting to wake your mom. You leave the light off as you slip into your Vans, you grab your car keys and you open the door, about to step into night but the smile that was lingering on your face fades away so quickly when you find Steve on your doorsteps.
Steve who was just about to ring the doorbell.
Steve who is soaked from the rain, despite driving here. You can see his BMW in your driveway. How long has he been standing out in the rain?
It takes you a moment to realize the state he is in.
His face is not only soaked from the rain, it’s also soaked with tears. His eyes are red and glassy. His bottom lip is trembling. His body is shaking and you don’t know whether it’s from the tears or the cold rain. He is barely standing and as you take a step closer, you can smell the whiskey in his breath.
Your heart drops to your stomach when you realize that he drove here drunk.
“Steve?” You whisper as though in disbelief.
What is he doing here at 3am? Why is he crying?
Drops of water roll down his face, his hazel eyes are filled with pain as tears continue to fall from them.
He says your name with a pained voice, shakily and sadly.
“I-I needed to see you.”
Your heart breaks at the trembling in his voice.
You furrow your brows, looking him up and down in concern.
What happened to him?
“Dolly, I’m so– I’m so sorry,” he slurs as a sob falls from his lips. He loses his balance and stumbles forward, almost crashing to the ground, but you catch him, wrapping your arms around his waist and holding him up as best as you can. He instantly latches onto you, pulling you against him and holding you tightly.
You blink in confusion, your heart starts pounding faster.
He is crying, he is still crying, holding you tighter than before as he buries his face in your neck. You let him. Despite the confusion that is rushing through you, you let him hold you like this for a moment, only letting go to close the front door and taking the keys from his hands, before you wrap your arms around him again. The rain is soaking through your clothes, his tears are falling onto you, he is holding you so tightly, like he’s afraid to let you go.
“It’s okay,” you whisper as you rub his back, not knowing what else to do.
Did he get into a fight with his dad again?
“I got you, Steve.”
Your words seem to make it even worse though, his body starts shaking even more as soft sobs fall from his lips. He grabs the material of your sweater so tightly, mumbling incoherent words into your neck.
You feel so helpless, not knowing what to do or what to say, so you just hold him.
This happened before, him showing up at your house in the middle of the night, drunk out of his mind with tears streaming down his face, he collapsed into your arms the moment you opened the door, rambling and slurring out words. You later on found out that he had gotten into a fight with his dad about his grades and his future.
But that wasn’t all, you just don’t know the rest of the story, Steve never told you about the things his dad had said to him – how you would leave if he didn’t get his shit together, how you would go off to college by yourself and learn how to live without him, how he would stay back in Hawkins while you would live your life somewhere else without him.
He is sobbing quietly, keeping his face buried in your neck, melting further into your arms.
“Steve,” you whisper as you rub your hand up and down his spine. You longingly look at the keys you’re still holding, a soft sigh falling from your lips. You won’t see him tonight. “Come on.”
“N-No,” he mumbles, thinking you want him to leave.
“Let’s go upstairs, Steve.”
You let go of him and grab his arms softly, trying to move back.
He sniffles as he loosens his grip on you, leaning back, he looks at you through his glassy eyes. He takes in the sight of your face, taking a moment to look at you.
You don’t know what’s going on in his troubled mind but his eyes tell you that he is suffering, and looking at you, makes him cry even harder. Though this time, he presses his lips together, trying not to sob.
Your own eyes fill with sadness the longer you look at him. You move your palm down his arm, taking his hand, you hold it tightly as you lead him towards the stairs. You drop both yours and his keys on the counter, taking another sad look at them before you turn to Steve, making sure that he doesn’t stumble again. He is taking slow but shaky steps, holding your hand tighter than before.
You look up, hoping that you didn’t wake your mom.
You step into your room and you close the door after he walks in, noticing that you forgot to turn off the light earlier.
His sniffles quiet down and you think the worst is over, that he calmed down after letting his tears fall, the tears that he probably kept in for way too long. Steve rarely ever cries or breaks down, he hates it, he hates being vulnerable. So, he keeps it in and he lets all his emotions pile up until there’s no space left.
A look around your room, a glance at a picture of you and him, and the closed window is enough to make him cry again. He lets go of you and hides his face behind his hands.
You feel so lost and don’t know what to do. Not even the worst fight with his dad resulted in this. Your own eyes well up with tears, your heart breaks at the sound of his cries. He once again, collapses into your arms the moment you take a step towards him, this time you lose your balance and your knees buckle causing you both to fall. You drop to your knees as he does too, still holding onto you, tighter than before if that is even possible. He wraps his arms around your waist, burying his face in your chest this time.
“Steve,” you whisper shakily, on the verge of breaking down yourself when he clings to you like he never did before. You know it must be bad.
He feels your hand running down his back, cupping the back of his head, trying to calm him down as you do your best to comfort him. He breathes you in, something that makes his heart shatter even more.
“I-I ruined everything,” he sobs into your chest. “I ruined you, I broke your heart, I broke you,” he slurs. “I-I was.. I found your note, I never read it. I never said I love you, I just, I didn’t say it back, I didn’t say I love you, I didn’t– I put it away, I didn’t read it until now.”
Oh.
Now you understand.
You furrow your brows and your eyes blur with tears.
It doesn’t break your heart to find out that he never read that note, it didn’t matter anyway, he dumped you the next day. You got your answer. But your heart hurts for the girl you once were. The girl who loved him so unconditionally. The girl who cried herself to sleep after each fight. The girl who just wanted him to love her back.
You swallow the lump in your throat and tighten your hold on him.
“It’s okay, Steve.”
He shakes his head and he pulls back a little, looking at you with his sad eyes.
You nod before he can protest. You let go of him to cup his cheeks, trying to wipe the tears, but they keep falling and falling.
“It’s okay,” you whisper, trying to convince him but his hazel eyes look back at you so brokenly.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispers, reaching his hands up to grab your wrists. “I’m so sorry for everything I did to you, dolly.”
You shake your head, opening your mouth to speak but he cuts you off, not letting you.
“Please forgive me,” he cries.
“Steve..” You frown, trying to catch the tears that keep escaping his eyes. You forgave him already. You forgave him because you never wanted to lose him. The past cannot be erased, not even if you were pained or happy, so the only thing is to look forward, and you don’t want to lose him in the future. He needs to understand that but no matter what you say now, he won’t listen.
“Dolly, you don’t understand.” As he says these words to you, he looks at you with pleading eyes.
You shake your head, a pained expression taking over your face.
He opens his mouth to speak when a knock on your door interrupts him. You tear your eyes away from him, looking at your door, startled.
Your mom’s voice sounds through the hallway as she knocks on your door again, “is everything okay?”
“Y-Yeah, hold on!” You call out to her before you turn back to him. Moving your hands down to his arms. “Come on, let’s get you up.”
He doesn’t protest, instead he takes your hands and stands up with you.
You lead him towards your bed and push him down, placing your hands on his shoulders, you look into his eyes, “I should go talk to my mom, she’s probably worried about the noises.”
He sniffles, nodding at you.
Before you can move away, your door opens, the light in the hallways shining into your room. You’re met with your mom’s concerned eyes, she looks at you first before her eyes find Steve’s figure sitting on your bed. Her eyes widen and she gasps as she takes in the sight of him.
“Steve, honey, you don’t look good, are you okay?”
That only seems to make him sadder. No sounds escape him but the tears fall even harder than before and the urge to break down yourself feels stronger than ever.
Your mom looks just as helpless as you do, you may not talk to her about your feelings but she can read you like an open book, and right now, she can see how much you’re suffering too.
“We’re okay, mom. I-I got this, you should go back to sleep.”
She hesitates. Looking at you with worried eyes.
You nod at her, pleading with your tear filled eyes.
She sighs, face falling a little. You feel bad for shutting her out but she had enough to deal with herself in the past few years, she shouldn’t deal with your problems now too.
She nods at you, taking another look at Steve before her eyes meet yours again, “let me know if you need anything.”
“I will, mom.”
She closes the door, leaving you alone with him.
You close your eyes for a moment, taking a deep and shaky breath, trying to fight the tears.
He is still holding your hand and crying his eyes out.
You take a look at him and suddenly feel like throwing up because of the overwhelming pressure in your chest. You can’t take this.
He looks up at you, tears rolling down his red cheeks, he looks so heartbroken and you can’t stand to see him like this. It hurts so bad. It fills you with so much sadness but also with anger because none of this would have happened if he wouldn’t have changed his mind about you.
“Let’s get you out of these clothes, you’re gonna get sick if you stay in these any longer.”
You turn around, letting go of his hand, you walk to your closet and open the door, taking out the box that you’ve been meaning to give him back months ago. You take the lid off and rummage through it until you find what you’re looking for, one of his old shirts. The whole time, you’re biting back tears, not wanting to cry. It’s hard not to when you have to face him again.
Why does he have to begin this over and over again?
You’ve been here before. You’ve done this time and time. You forgave him already, you gave him a second chance, you were ready to move on.
Why does he have to do this now?
He is staring at you with a sullen look in his eyes, there is so much sadness, so much pain and heartbreak in the eyes you used to love so much.
“Here,” you whisper, placing the shirt on your bed, beside him. “Take your shirt off, Steve.”
He can barely see through his vision, his bottom lip is trembling, his hands are shaking, his whole body is shaking from both the coldness that is seeping through his shirt and the pain that he put himself in.
He reaches for the hem of his shirt, clumsily.
You sigh and step towards him, leaning down, you push his hands away gently, grabbing the wet material and pulling the shirt over his head.
“Do you want to take a warm shower?” You ask, putting your hands on his cold arms. “You’re freezing, Steve.”
He shakes his head.
“Okay,” you sigh and hand him the black shirt. “Here, put this one.”
“Okay,” he whispers, watching you take his wet shirt and walking into the bathroom. His eyes follow you like the ones of a lost puppy. He no longer feels the tears running down his face, he’s been crying all night, his chest has been hurting badly from the moment he started reading old notes. The way you’re taking care of him after everything that he has done to you, makes him feel even worse.
You walk back into the room a moment later.
He is wiping his tears away after putting the shirt on. You can tell that he tries to hold himself together, not wanting to break into sobs again, but you know that he is struggling to with his emotions in overdrive and the alcohol in his system.
“I’m gonna get you some water–”
“No, please don’t leave me.”
You had never heard him sound so heartbroken, so desperate and scared.
You had never seen him look like this, so fragile and broken.
“Please.”
He takes your hand in his.
“I don’t… I don’t deserve you–”
You sigh, shaking your head as you sit down beside him.
“Steve, stop! We’re friends, we’re over this okay? You need to stop doing this, we talked it all out. I forgave you–”
He shakes his head, catching you off guard when he moves towards you and cups your cheeks.
“I wanted everything with you. I wanted you to be the one so bad. I know we were too young to think so far ahead but.. I wanted it all with you, I wanted to marry you and have kids with you but then I fucked it all up, I ruined everything. I-I don’t know what happened to me, I don’t know what’s wrong with me and why I break everything.”
Your eyes widen in shock, tears you can no longer hold back fall from your eyes and roll down your cheeks. You open your mouth but no words come out. You are too stunned to speak.
You never knew how he truly felt about you and about your future together. You knew that he wanted to go to college with you but that was the only part about your shared future that was mentioned – aside from the promise he made to never stop loving you.
Despite the state of shock that you’re in, you cannot help but cry for the girl that wanted it all with him.
“I don’t deserve you, fuck. I don’t deserve you– and you don’t deserve me. You don’t deserve someone like me, you don’t deserve how I treated you, you don’t deserve how I made you feel, you don’t deserve the pain I made you go through, because you’re so good, and so perfect, and I destroyed that.. I destroyed you.” His voice is so shaky, his tears won’t stop falling, neither do yours. But he wipes them away softly.
Your bottom lip trembles as you look at him in pain.
“Steve..”
He searches for something in your eyes – anger, hatred, rage. But he can’t find any of it. After everything that he put you through, you still got love for him and it makes him hate himself even more.
He knew what he did to you, what he put you through. Yet, only tonight it really sank in, how much he truly hurt you. How much he hurt that one person that he would give everything for – his heart, his soul, everything.
“I’m so sorry for everything, baby.” His voice breaks and he closes his eyes as he lets his head hang low. Only a second passes, before you pull him into your arms again.
“It’s okay, Steve,” you whisper.
It’s not okay. How could it ever be okay?
He left a deep scar, one that you will carry for the rest of your life and there is nothing he can do to fix it.
He wraps his arms around your body and pulls you in, closer and closer until you’re flush against him, in search of your warmth, he buries his face in your neck. He breathes you in and holds you tightly, like it’s the last time. Enjoying the feeling of your hand running up and down his spine as your other hand cups the back of his head. His lips touch your skin, he is unaware of the marks on your neck. He is unaware of who’s hands, who’s lips have touched your body tonight.
“I’m still your dolly, Steve,” you whisper into his shoulder.
Yes, you are still his best friend.
Still his dolly.
But never his girl again.
You stare into nothing as you hold him, breathing slowly. Your lips are pressed against his shoulder, you tighten your arms around him even when his cries quiet down and his breathing slows down, you still hold him, not ready to let go just yet.
The room becomes silent, so silent that you suddenly miss the sound of his voice.
“Steve?” You whisper.
His head is laying on your shoulder, his breathing slow and steady. You know that he had fallen asleep but you still whisper his name again. When you get no response, you move back slowly, careful not to wake him. You push him down softly, adjusting the pillow beneath him.
Your eyes soften as you take in the sight of him. You scoot closer to him, bringing your hands up to his face, you wipe the fallen tears and caress his cheek. Running your fingers through his hair and pushing away the fallen strands.
You blink, feeling the hot tears burning in your eyes.
The joy in your heart faded the moment he crashed into your arms. Right now, it’s just hurting.
You know why he came here tonight.
Not for comfort. Not for a second chance. Not for forgiveness. No. He came to end things, once and for all.
With a heavy heart, you tear your eyes away from him and push yourself up. You lean down to take his Nike’s off, you lift his legs up on the bed and grab the covers, pulling them up to his chest. You notice the wristband, the one you gave him two nights ago, he is wearing it.
You can’t remember the last time he was here in your room, let alone in your bed. It’s odd, almost strange to see him here.
You look out your window, noticing that the rain has stopped falling. You hear the tires of a car screeching through the night. Jimmy Davidson must be back from college, you think. The jock is the only in town who drives like a maniac – well, besides Billy Hargrove and Eddie.
You take one last look at him before you turn around and leave your room, wanting to grab some water and advil for him. You close the door carefully and make your way downstairs.
You notice that the lights are on in the kitchen. The smell of hot chocolate lingers in the air. Your mom is still awake. You find her sitting at the table by the window, with a magazine in front of her. A blanket around her shoulder and glasses perched on her nose.
You feel bad for waking her up, knowing that she works the morning shift this week. But just her presence alone gives you the comfort that you so desperately need, right now.
She looks up when she feels your presence. She takes her reading glasses off and places them on the table, pushing the blanket off as she stands up, she wastes no second to make her way towards you, the same concerned look as before resting in her features.
“Is Steve okay?”
You nod, swallowing the lump in your throat and blinking the tears away.
“Yeah. He’s sleeping now.”
She knows that you’re not telling her everything, you never are.
Sighing, she raises her hand towards your face, cupping your cheek as she gives you a smile, a sad one.
“Are you okay?”
Tears that you have just blinked away, well up in your eyes again. This time you hesitate. This time you can’t tell her that you feel okay or even good. You can’t hold your feelings back, not tonight.
“You can talk to me. You never do and you always hold yourself back with me. I am your mother and I will listen to you, I’m here for you. So please, talk to me, sweetheart.”
You look into her kind eyes and you suddenly feel like breaking down. You have been holding back for so long, hiding your true feelings, not letting them shine through out of fear that this would happen.
But everything is crumbling now, all the last pieces that were holding you and Steve together had fallen apart the moment you had broken the barrier and kissed him.
You don’t know where to start, there is so much to tell.
So, you start with something you’ve been dying to get off your chest.
“I love Eddie, mom.”
It feels like a relief to finally say it out loud, the words that you kept away for so long are now out in the open and.. it feels right.
You watch for surprise to flash in her eyes but there is none. In fact, she doesn’t give you much of a reaction at all. A knowing look crosses her face, that’s all.
“Is that why Steve was crying?”
You shake your head.
“No. He doesn’t know,” you mumble, looking down. “I haven’t told him yet.”
“Then what happened to him?”
You can hear the worry in her voice. You wonder if it will still be there when you tell her what he did to you. You never told her why he left. You never told her how much he hurt you. You never wanted her to think badly of him, not even after he broke your heart so carelessly.
It feels like the world is weighing on your shoulders and the urge to throw it off feels so strong. You’ve been carrying it around for too long.
“He came to apologize, to ask for forgiveness.”
“Forgiveness?” She asks. “Did you two get into a fight?”
“No, mom.”
She tilts her head, giving you a questioning look.
“Can we sit down?” You nudge your chin towards the table. “It’s a lot to talk about.”
She nods, a smile tugging at her lips. She wraps her arm around your shoulder and she leads you to the table.
You sit down by the window and watch her move to the other side. She doesn’t take a seat though, instead she grabs the blanket and walks back to you, wrapping it around your shoulders and stepping away for a moment.
Your eyes follow her in curiosity.
She grabs your favorite mug from the cupboard and places it on the counter.
You prop your chin on your palm and watch how she makes you a hot chocolate, the way you always loved it, with mini marshmallows on top.
As you watch her move around in the kitchen, you realize how much you have missed this, how much you have missed your mom. This reminds you of older days, simpler days. Days where you had woken up from nightmares and sneaked into your parents room to wake your mom. She always knew how to comfort you. Instead of taking you back to bed and reading you a story, she always took you downstairs, made you hot chocolate and let you talk about whatever had troubled your young mind.
And now you’re so much older and you don’t talk anymore. But you need to, you need to talk about it all so badly. So, you do.
You tell her everything – from the sweetest note, to your overthinking, to all the fights she never knew about, to Nancy, to Tina’s Halloween party, to Eddie… You tell her absolutely everything.
Tears fall as you talk about it all with a heavy heart. Relieving all the painful moments of your life and feeling the guilt of watching her eyes flash with sadness when she finally finds out the truth.
How you cried yourself to sleep. How you stopped eating and pretended to be okay in front of everyone. How heartbroken you were after he left. How unloved you felt for so long. How you have lost yourself after losing him before Eddie stepped into your life. How much Steve changed because of her. How he came back to you. How much he cared about you after all. How much he loved you after all.
And as you finally talk, you can feel the weight getting lighter and lighter, falling off your shoulders but not completely. Not yet. But you let it all out, just like you tried with Robin but this feels different, your mom doesn’t try to lecture you, she doesn’t tell you what to do, what’s right and what’s wrong – she just listens because she knows that this is what you need.
To talk, to cry, to feel.
And when your tears stop falling and you calm down, she wraps her arms around you and pulls you into a tight hug.
“You are such a brave girl. I know you had your friends with you, and Eddie especially. But you didn’t have to be alone in this. I was here. I have always been here, my sweet girl. You were never alone, you were never unloved.”
You close your eyes, ignoring the trembling in your lips and the shakiness in your hands as you hug her tightly, laying your chin on her shoulder. She rubs your back and squeezes you.
In her arms you feel safe and comforted, you don’t need to hide, you don’t need to feel embarrassed or scared. You’re just safe and at home.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you, mom,” you whisper when you realize how lost you’d truly be if you didn’t have her. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
“I’ll always be here, sweetheart.”
You sniffle, falling silent again.
“You know.. I always knew by the way.”
“Huh?”
“That you loved Eddie.”
Shocked at her words, you pull away from the hug and stare at her with wide eyes.
“I know how to see your emotions through your eyes, my love. I am not your mother for nothing,” she laughs while wiping away your fallen tears, tucking your hair behind your ear.
You roll your eyes with a soft smile on your face.
“And I also knew about Eddie’s feelings. That boy would blush every time he came to pick you up and you would come down with a new dress or skirt. I don’t know how you didn’t see his ears getting all red.”
Your eyes grow bigger, softening after her words as you’re beaming at her.
“You think he loves me, mom?”
She giggles, staring at you as though you’ve gone crazy.
“Someone would have to be blind and deaf to not notice that.”
You blush at her words, though you can’t hide the excitement that crosses your face when you think about him, when you think about seeing him later. You look at each other, as though she can read your mind, you both start giggling.
She looks at you fondly, squeezing your hand.
“You know that I’m proud of you, right?” She smiles. “You’re so strong. You have always been a fighter.”
“No. Not always,” you shake your head. “I didn’t always fight for what I wanted.”
“But now you do, right?”
You nod.
“Yeah, now I do.”
Your mom looks towards the stairs. You know what’s on her mind. You saw the disappointment, the anger and the sadness in her eyes when you told her the truth about Steve.
You know that she isn’t angry at him – she would have been had you told her the truth from the start. But a year has passed and things have changed. Steve has changed. You have changed. And despite what you have gone through, you still love him.
And that is another reason for your tears. Steve has always been a part of your life and she knows that you are afraid to lose him again. You might lose your best friend.
“And do you still love Steve?”
“I do..” You whisper. “That’s why it’s all so.. complicated.”
“Is it?” She asks, giving you a small smile. “Or do you make it complicated?”
You tilt your head, raising your brows at her question.
“You can love them both and they will both be special to you, no matter what. But you can be in love with only one person.”
You let her words sink in, but your heart only hurts more.
You have been here so many times already. You have told yourself that you let him go, you have convinced yourself that you did but did you ever let him go? Did you ever allow yourself to move past it? No. Because letting go of him always filled you with so much fear.
“I don’t want to lose him.”
The pain in your eyes is very telling. The sadness gives away who you are talking about.
“But the love you once had for him is somewhere else now, right?”
You’re biting back tears. And after a few minutes of silence, you nod.
“I love Eddie, mom. I really really love Eddie.”
She smiles at your words, taking your hand, she looks into your eyes.
“You know what you have to do then.. right?”
You nod, getting sadder each passing second.
“Yes,” you whisper. “I just– I don’t want to hurt him anymore.”
“You will hurt him more if you don’t talk to him. You need to give him closure. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the only way the two of you can be happy.”
“I know,” you whisper, shakily.
She gives you an encouraging smile, “you got this, sweetheart. It’s gonna be okay.”
“I hope so..”
She holds your hand a little tighter, giving it a squeeze.
“You should get some sleep. You can sleep in my bed if you don’t wanna go back there. I gotta start getting ready for work now.”
“Already?” You frown as you turn around to look at the clock. It’s 4:30 am already.
“Oh shit, I’m sorry for keeping you up. You really needed your sleep.”
She shakes her head at you, “no, it’s okay. I’m glad you finally talked to me.”
You smile at her, tilting your head to the side, “me too.”
“Take it easy, okay?”
You nod.
She gives your hand a pat before she gets up, ruffling your hair playfully as she moves past you, making you chuckle.
“Hey mom?”
She turns around before stepping out into the hallway, looking back at you.
“Thank you.”
Her gaze softens, brows knitting together.
“Of course, sweetie,” the soft sound of your mom’s voice sounds through the kitchen. “I’m gonna go check on him.”
“Okay,” you nod.
She gives you another smile before she turns around, leaving you alone with your thoughts.
With a sigh, you look down and reach for the now half empty mug, you pull your knees up to your chest, taking a sip of the hot chocolate as you look out the window.
It’s still dark out, the world is still sleeping, and you enjoy the last moments of this.
You’re not ready for the morning to come.
You’re still not ready.
-
Steve’s head is pounding, the pain is excruciating. He can’t open his eyes, not yet. The sun that is shining into the room is too bright. A groan falls from his lips and he clutches the pillow beneath his head, squeezing his eyes shut after trying to open them.
He hears the birds chirping outside, he must have left his window open last night. He smells the fresh air, it instantly calms the sickening feeling in his chest a little. He sinks into the pillows and breathes in.
The sweet and floral scent is so pleasant, it smells like you. He takes another deep breath, he smells your perfume, your shampoo, your vanilla body wash. His heart flutters and he can’t help but melt into the warmth of the bed and the scents that linger. He feels safe and comforted.
It takes him a moment to realize that his pillows shouldn’t smell like you or your perfume. His bed isn’t usually this comfortable either.
Steve opens his eyes slowly, groaning in pain when the light shines directly into his face. Hiding behind his hands, he sits up. He rubs his eyes and runs his hand through his messy hair. Turning his back to the window, he squints his eyes as he opens them again, trying to get used to the light.
His throat feels so dry that it hurts and his head is killing him. He can still taste the whiskey on his tongue, it makes him nauseous.
Once his eyes are fully adjusted to the light, he takes a look around the room and his heart skips in his chest, his red rimmed eyes widen when he realizes where he is.
His stomach drops when he finds Advil on your nightstand next to a glass of water.
“Oh fuck,” he groans as he buries his face back in his hands. Dread fills him when he starts to remember the previous night.
The note. The Whiskey that he stole from his dad’s office. The tears that streamed down his face when he carelessly drove to your house drunk. You. He remembers the way you held him, the way you cried too.
“Fuck,” he whispers, tugging at his hair.
He chugs down the glass of water and after a moment of hesitation, he gets up from your bed and looks down at himself, noticing the new– well, old shirt. He puts on his Nike’s and walks into your bathroom to splash some cold water on his face but when he turns on the light and he takes a look into the mirror, he can’t help but feel sick. His eyes are red and puffy from all the crying, his skin looks pale and his hair has never looked worse than it does right now.
He shakes his head at himself, hating his reflection more than anything, right now.
With a sigh, he looks down, gripping the counter tightly, knowing that he has to face you now.
He knows that there’s a small chance that you aren’t home, that you have left. But he knows that you wouldn’t do it while he is here, not even if you’re upset with him.
After washing his face with cold water and using your mouth wash to get rid of that awful taste of whiskey, he walks back into your room, trying not to let the sadness take hold of him again but it’s hard not to fall into the pit of darkness again when he stands inside the room of the girl he loves, the girl he has made so many memories with, in here and anywhere else in this stupid small town.
From good memories to bad ones.
From innocent ones like picking flowers for you at the age of 12 to buying you a bouquet of flowers for your 16th birthday.
From comforting hugs at school to cuddling in your bed at nights.
From first kisses on your bedroom floor to more passionate kisses in his car after every stop at the streetlight.
From making love in your bed to fighting in your room with tears streaming down your face.
He sees the box on the ground, the one that you took out of your closet, last night. You kept his things, just like he kept yours.
Did you struggle to get rid of them like he did?
Did you keep them in hopes that you would find your way back together someday?
His hands are starting to get clammy, his heart starts pounding again. He takes another look around your room before he opens the door and steps out into the hallway.
The faint sound of the music coming from the radio tells him that you are in the kitchen. He makes his way downstairs, ignoring the shakiness in his legs or his hands. The smell of coffee lingers in the air.
He presses his lips together as he takes a deep breath before he steps into the kitchen.
You’re leaning against the counter, your chin is propped on your hand, a book lying in front of you, you haven’t noticed him yet and Steve takes that as a chance to look at you.
Your hand is wrapped around a mug that Eddie must have given you, you told him that he loves Garfield. He laughed about it when you did.
It’s only 8 am. He knows you’re not working today, yet you’re already so put together. Make up on your already beautiful skin, hair done in waves, you’re wearing an outfit you certainly didn’t wear yesterday. God, you look so beautiful that it hurts.
His heart longs for you, his hands itch to touch you – something that he could’ve done.
In a different world, he would pull you into his arms and shower you with kisses, he would hold you, not wanting to let you go. He would make breakfast for you and then you would spend the day together.
But you’re in this world.
In a world where he can’t kiss you or hold you or spend the day with you.
“Hey..”
You raise your head and your glassy eyes meet his.
Another wave of guilt rushes through him. You cried. You cried because of him again.
“Hi,” you whisper as you close your book and straighten your back, you look him up and down.
Steve hates how concerned you look, how worried you are over him.
You take a step forward, giving him a small smile.
“Are you feeling okay?”
He shrugs, trying to smile back at you.
“I’ll make you a coffee, you should sit,” you nudge your head into the direction of the kitchen table.
“Okay.”
He walks to the table and takes the seat that was once his. It’s been a long time since he sat here and watched you.
You make the coffee first, pouring some into a Hawkins High mug. You add two sugars, still knowing how he likes his coffee.
“When’s the last time you ate?”
You place the mug in front of him, eying him with softness in your eyes, something that makes all of this even harder.
He blinks, shrugging at your words.
“Okay,” you sigh and pull back your hair, without thinking. “Bagels or Toast? I’ll make you some eggs if you want–”
Your voice becomes faint, like he’s under water, sinking further and further into the deep end. The marks on your neck are now visible to him, the hickeys that he left. Steve is not shocked or even surprised. He already knew when he came to you, last night. It was obvious, even through his drunken haze, he could see it in your eyes, the happiness that shined in them before you took in the sight of him.
It still hurts.
And it hurts even more to think about you with him, especially in that way.
“Toast is just fine,” he mumbles.
“Okay, Steve,” you whisper, this was always his go-to breakfast after a night out. Black coffee and toast. It’s plain but it’s the only thing he gets down.
He keeps watching you. Eyes following your every moment.
There is so much sadness inside of him but there is also more, there is acceptance. He knows why he came here last night.
Bits and pieces start to return to him. He remembers what he confessed to you, how you held him, how you took care of him, how you comforted him.
He truly never deserved you.
You place a plate in front of him, “you sure you want nothing else?” You point to the buttered toast. You added a few berries on the side.
He gives you a smile, “you know I’ll probably get sick if I eat anything else,” he says, chuckling for the first time today.
“Yeah,” you breathe. “You always had a weak stomach.”
“Only when I drink whiskey.”
You nod, sitting down opposite of him. You take a sip of your coffee and lean back. You look down and reach for the magazine that your mom was reading earlier, not wanting to make him uncomfortable by staring.
Steve looks up at you and he just knows it’s the last time that he will have your coffee and your toast.
It’s the last time he will get to sit here with you.
So, for a moment, he pretends that everything is alright, that this is normal, that this is something you both do every day and for the rest of your lives, that he didn’t mess up, that everything is fine.
He takes a few sips of the coffee and eats the toast, and when he’s done, he takes a deep breath and pushes the plate aside, not looking up from the coffee just yet.
“I’m sorry.”
You close the magazine, sighing as you finally look up.
“You said that already… many times, Steve.”
He doesn’t say anything to that. He only looks up at you, his eyes scan your face, his lips twitch.
“You look happy, dolly.”
What?
You shake your head a little, furrowing your brows as you stare at him in confusion.
“You have color in your skin again, you no longer.. are skin and bones,” he says, quietly. Looking down as his eyes fill with guilt, knowing that you stopped eating because of how heartbroken you were. “Your hair is longer, your nails are painted black– a color I didn’t like you putting on because I was a fucking asshole..”
“Steve–”
He shakes his head at you, not wanting you to interrupt him.
“You wear stuff you always told me you wanted to buy, you started wearing makeup, the heavy kind you once tried and loved but thought it was too much,” he says with a smile on his face, a knowing one.
You see the way his eyes fall to your neck and your heart jumps when you realize what he is looking at. Surprisingly, there is no shock in his eyes, jealousy or even anger, just sadness. He knows everything and it’s not the marks on your skin he needed to look at.
“You are living again.. and god, I want to hate him for it but.. how can I when he saved you from the pain I put you through?”
Your eyes burn with tears.
“I’m done standing in your way–”
“Steve,” you whisper, shaking your head. “Y-You’re not standing in the way.”
“Yes, I am.” His voice is thick with tears and by the way he is blinking, you can tell that he is trying not to cry.
He looks down at the necklace you are wearing, the locket he had put around your neck, months ago.
He knows that there is no picture of him inside and as much as it hurts, it’s okay.
He didn’t come here to fight for you. He didn’t come here for a second chance or to get you back. He came here to let you go. So you could find happiness, the way you always deserved it.
“And I don’t want to anymore. I want you to be happy.”
Your bottom lip starts trembling again.
“And I know that you will be with him,” he says as he tears his away from the marks on your neck and he looks into your glassy eyes. “He would never do what I did. He would never put you through all of this.”
You sniffle, looking into your best friend’s eyes. There is so much pain and sadness lingering in them and you hate it, you hate it so much.
“I never let you go, dolly,” he finally admits with a heavy sigh. “Not at Tina’s Halloween party, not when I came to see you the next day, not after we went to Jimmy’s party together. I never let you go.”
Your brows knit together, eyes that stare back at him with pain, fill with more tears. You don’t know what to say, so you say nothing and you look into the brown eyes you always loved so much.
You never let him go either, that’s why it hurts so much.
Knowing that this is the last time crushes your heart in a new way. You know that this could not only be the end of the relationship you always held onto. This could be the end of everything.
This was always your worst fear. Losing him.
You have lost him before but you always knew that he would come back.
And he always knew it too.
But this, this is different.
And this hurts even more than it did the first time.
You still love him, there is no doubt about that. Steve can see it in your eyes, it’s in the way you look at him, it’s in the way your lips tremble and your hands shake as fear crosses your face. You’re scared to lose him.
How could he ever think anything else? How could he ever doubt your love for him when it’s so clearly written on your face? Even now.
Steve can’t help but wonder; would it have worked out between you if there wasn’t someone else?
If Nancy never stepped into his life.
If Eddie never stepped into your life.
Would you have stayed together?
Would you have broken up either way?
Would you have found your way back together in the future?
Would he have been able to make it up to you?
Would you get your happy ending then?
“I dropped some heavy stuff on you last night,” he mumbles, cheeks flushing red when he remembers all the things he had said to you.
“Oh, you mean marriage and kids?” You ask as a smile tugs on your lips when you see him blushing.
He scratches the back of his neck, scrunching his face up, “yeah..”
You laugh a little, leaning your elbow on the table, you cup your cheek, “well, I never thought that far ahead when we were still together. I mean, I never knew what I wanted for my future but I knew that I wanted you in it,” you say, watching the way he nods at you. “And maybe a cat or a dog.”
He chuckles.
“Or maybe a few cats and a dog.”
A fond smile reaches his face as he stares at you, shaking his head at the thought of all the pets you’d bring home while he’d– his smile begins to fade, it will never happen.
“Well, I’m sure that Eddie will love that.”
Your heart flutters at the thought of a future with him. Yeah, Eddie will love that.
“You’ll be happy with him. He will make you happy,” he says confidently because he knows that he will. “And if not, well, then I’ll take you back to that treehouse and I’ll marry you again.”
A laugh falls from your lips as a tear finally rolls down your cheek.
“The treehouse we got married in when we were ten?”
“Yeah,” he whispers. “That one. You know I still got that paper ring,” he says with a serious face.
“I do too, I put it in a box,” you giggle.
His eyes light up and he smiles at you, but he watches the tear roll down your cheek and then another. He stands up and he walks over to you, his heart skips a beat when you look up at him with your beautiful eyes. He cups your cheeks, wiping away the tears.
“I don’t want you to cry over me anymore,” he whispers, holding your face for the last time.
“Steve,” you whisper, shakily.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. It’s okay.”
You knew that this was coming. You knew that this had to happen. If he didn’t come to you last night, then you’d be the one coming to him to talk and put an end to this, once and for all.
“I love you with all my heart and I ache for you, all the goddamn time but I don’t deserve you. You should have never forgiven me. You should have never treated me like a friend. You should have never given me the chance to be near you again… not after what I did.”
You grab his wrists, shaking your head at his words. Scared that he will leave you for good. Scared that he will leave your friendship behind and step out of your life forever.
Steve hates to see the way your lips tremble, the way your eyes are nothing but tears, sadness and heartbreak, yet again.
He can’t stand to see it any longer.
“I let you go,” he whispers as he wipes your tears again. “Like you asked me to months ago.”
His heart is screaming at him not to, everything inside of him longs for him to stay, to fight for you, to drop to his knees and ask to try again.
But this is the right thing to do.
There is someone who can give you more than he can.
Someone who didn’t hurt you. Someone who wouldn’t hurt you. Someone who would rather get hurt by you than do something to break your heart.
“I choose you, sweetheart. This time, I choose you and your happiness.”
A sad smile lingers on his face, he brushes your hair back and he looks down at the locket, one last time.
He knows why you aren’t speaking, you’d break down if you would.
He leans down, tilting your head up a little, he presses his lips against your forehead, kissing you one last time.
His throat feels tight and his chest is hurting, he knows that he is on the verge of another breakdown, he is so very close to it.
This is the hardest thing he will ever have to do.
“Goodbye, Dolly.”
Your sniffles break his heart. You only hold his wrists tighter in response, holding onto them, your touch lingers on the wristband, one that he will never stop wearing. You let go after a few seconds.
He feels your eyes on him, your big sad eyes. He can’t bear to take another look at you, knowing that he won’t be able to leave if he does, so he steps away from you, despite his heart telling him not to.
He turns around and he walks away from you for the last time. He grabs his keys that you left on the counter, last night.
With a heavy heart, he walks out of your house, biting back tears as he makes his way to his car.
It’s over now.
Something he held onto since he left you, is over.
And now he doesn’t know what to do with himself.
He unlocks his car when the front door bursts open, startling him. He turns around with tears in his eyes that threaten to spill. Before he can even react, you suddenly crash into his arms, and wrap your arms around him, you hold onto him like you’re afraid that he might disappear if you let go. You hug him so tightly.
His eyes soften and his chest fills with warmth.
He doesn’t hesitate to hug you back, wrapping his arms around your smaller frame, he holds you tight and buries his face in your neck.
No matter what happened in the past. No matter what he did to you. No matter how much pain you have gone through, you still don’t want to live in a world where he isn’t in your life.
After all, he will always be the boy who picked flowers for you, who surprised you with your favorite snacks, who comforted you whenever your parents fought, who slept in your bed when you were afraid of storms, who taught you how to slow dance, who wrote you notes when he was younger, who promised you to be your prince when your first crush rejected you.
You hold onto him, pressing your cheek against his chest.
You stay like that for a moment, for a long moment – one that could never be long enough.
He breathes you in and closes his eyes, ignoring the fluttering in his chest.
He knows that this should make him feel better, to know that you love him enough to forgive him, to want him to stay but if anything, it makes him feel worse because he is still losing you.
He knows he has to walk away, for now.
“I love you, Stevie.”
He smiles sadly.
He knows it’s not the same as it was. It’s not the I love you’s from all your notes. He knows it’s not the same love he feels for you, not anymore.
But the love you always had for him. The love you had since you were kids.
And for him that’s more than he could ever ask for.
“I love you too, Dolly.”
You sniffle, he can feel you shaking against him. You’re trying not to cry.
“Please don’t become a stranger again, Steve.”
His breath hitches in his throat, he presses his lips together, willing the tears to stop from falling.
“Me?” He asks, pulling back to look down at you. He musters up a smile. “I might need some time but I will latch onto you as soon as I get over my whiny ass.” He jokes, despite the pain in his heart.
You roll your eyes but laugh at his words.
You take a deep breath and sigh.
This is it.
This is what was supposed to happen.
It hurts but you also feel relieved to finally put an end to something that kept holding you back for so long.
You know you won’t truly lose him.
He will always be your Steve.
And you will always be his Dolly.
But it won’t ever be the same.
You will be his friend and he will be yours and that’s all you’ll ever be.
You won’t be sad forever and neither will he.
He will find love after you.
He will find it like you did.
It’s what he deserves.
It’s what you both deserve.
“We kinda got friendship bracelets now,” he smiles through his tears, pointing to the wristband as he holds his hand up. You reach out to touch it, tracing the words.
‘love you to the moon and to saturn’
“Well, I got one, you have a necklace.”
You smile, placing your hand on the locket, “yeah.”
You turn it around, looking at the half moon that he got customized just for you.
You tear your eyes away from him and look around, furrowing your brows when you realize something.
“You know what, we should stop doing this.”
“What do you mean?” He asks, tilting his head.
“Saying goodbye in my driveway.”
He chuckles, though it’s a sad one.
“This is the last one,” he whispers. “Of this kind, at least. Our future goodbyes won’t be so…”
“Sad?”
“Yeah.” He takes your hand, giving it a squeeze.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
He takes a step forward, he leans down and kisses your cheek, not paying attention to the feeling in his heart or the way his lips tingle when they touch your skin for the last time. He gives your hand a squeeze before he pulls away again.
“I’ll see you around.”
He can tell that you’re trying not to cry,  that you are forcing a smile onto your face.
“Yeah, I’ll see you around, Steve.”
You can tell that he wants to say more. He looks at you. His eyes trace every inch of your face, like he’s trying to memorize you. And then, he nods to himself, blinking and giving you one last smile before he turns away from you.
You watch him leave.
For the last time, you watch him walk away from you.
You stand there and wait until he is gone, until you no longer see his car in the distance.
And just like that, he is gone, again.
And your tears are falling again.

A/N: I know that no one cares about my feelings cause I did this. But I want you to know that I freaking suffered writing this chapter. It felt heartbreaking and sad and wrong. I really wanted Steve to be the one. And my choice has nothing to do with the fact that I'm an Eddie girl, I love Steve, as well. (I know some of you don't believe this but I've loved him since 2016 so shut up, please and thanks). I didn't know how to make him come back from all what he did -- the emotional cheating, the pain he put her through, the heartbreak, the betrayal. It was too much and this ending genuinely has nothing to do with Eddie being in this story.
But also, please remember. This is not the ending of the story. So before you send any hate to me, remember that there will be another chapter and an epilogue. Anything can happen in an epilogue, just saying.
Also, I'll be working on a new Steve series. Strictly Steve x reader, I promise

Charles Leclerc(I Did Something Bad)
Summary: You work at Ferrari alongside Charles. You two are very close friends. You have always liked him but he’s always been in relationships. One day you finally get in a relationship with someone else. But something is going on behind the scenes of your public relationship.
Inspired by the song I did something bad by taylor swift.
(mentions of smut but mainly just fluff)
Tumblr media
Your POV
“Y/N” Charles said looking at me. “What” I said. “When can I see you again” he whispered in my ear. “I’m trying to work on these strategies cha” I said. “We both know that we can’t resist each other” Charles said putting his hand on my knee. “Will you go away” I said.
“Come on.. the other night was so much fun” he said whispering in my ear kissing my cheek. “Cheri” Charles said. “Stop” I said laughing. “Do you want me too” he asked. “Let’s go walk the track okay we gotta go over everything” I said he nodded.
We then walked the track together. Lando and Oscar were in front of us.
“Oh look your boyfriend Lando” Charles said. “Shut up” I said writing down stuff about the track. “Does.. he know that you scream my name sometimes” Charles said only I heard. “Will you stop” I said. “What he obviously isn’t doing what’s needed” Charles said.
“Hmmm is that why you think we do what we are doing” I said. “Why else” Charles said. “I don’t know Charles” I said. “I think you like the thrill of being with me” Charles said. “Maybe I do” I said as we kept walking the track.
“You just like being bad and Lando is boring” Charles said. “He’s not boring it’s just” I began to say. “You find me more attractive or.. am… I better in bed” Charles said.
“You know that you are good in bed” I said he smirked. “Oh I know I just love hearing you tell me” he whispered in my ear. “Your so” I said. “So what do you want me right now too” Charles said. I rolled my eyes. “Oh I love when you do that” Charles said.
“Come on” I said as we kept walking the track. We finally got back to the garage. “Track looks great” I said. “Yeah it does the car should preform well tomorrow” Charles said standing beside. “Yeah it will especially on the corners” I said. “Yeah the corners” Charles said putting a hand on my lower back.
It sent chills down my spine.
“Char” I said looking at him. “What…” Charles said. I then looked around before dragging him into his drivers room shutting the door. “I can’t” I said kissing him. “Oh well then you better be super quiet” Charles said picking me up.
Later on…
I left the drivers room first fixing my hair. Charles followed a little while later. He looked at me with a wink as I went to talk to Carlos.
“There you are” Carlos said. “Sorry I was busy” I said. “Yeah I know and fix your pants” Carlos whispered. I zipped them back up. “Oh thanks” I said. “How long are you two gonna sneak around” Carlos said. “You know” I said.
“I accidentally saw you two once..but what about Lando” Carlos said. “L..Lando yeah I know” I said looking at Carlos. “I don’t understand why you keep doing it” Carlos said. “Everyone says it’s bad but I don’t know” I said.
“You do what you want but you better not hurt Lando” Carlos said. “Then I’ll break up with him I don’t know” I said. “Yeah clearly you are way more into Charles” Carlos said. “What can I say I’m addicted to being bad” I said he laughed.
“I can see that” Carlos said. “And it does feel good” I said. “Okay okay I don’t care let’s get back to work please” Carlos said. “Yeah let’s” I said.

You Are In Love (Ashley Sanchez x Reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: This was requested by @redbullfanatic and I just want to say that I loved writing this! (: I hope you like it, and I hope everyone does as well (: I also hope I did it justice 🫡 also I’m sorry this took me like forever to finish 😭 (crossing my fingers and praying I did it justice)
P.S I’m nervous sweating for this 🥲 lmaoo
Oh and I highly recommend listening to You Are In Love by Taylor Swift while reading this, and make sure the repeat one song option is on 👀
You never understood why people fell in love, never understood how someone could love another person so much. You certainly didn't think you'd fall in love with someone, or understand what everyone said about falling in love.
It never crossed your mind that you could fall in love, but seeing your friends, teammates, be in love with their significant other it started crossing your mind.
Crossing your mind just a little more often, crossing your mind every time you were with the one person who understood you more than yourself.
Your best friend.
It was a late night during the season. You and Ashley had drove to your favorite spot after training, where stargazing was the only time you two seemed to enjoy each others company just a bit more.
And although you both played for the same team, you both always seemed to be caught up on something new.
“You’re like literally the best, best friend I’ve ever had.” Ashley says as she lays her head on your shoulder.
“You’ve had others before me? I feel so betrayed, hurt.” You say jokingly. "Wounded."
“See you’re just the best.”
“Well I am the best.” You say with a smirk. "No one better than me baby."
“Easy now. Don’t be too cocky. I can easily give your spot to someone else.”
“Who? Trin? The girl who can’t cook to save her life. Who’d bake you your sweets when you’re sad.”
“Damn you're so right. I guess I'll have to keep you around." Ashley says jokingly.
"You guess? Wow. I didn't know this side of you Ash."
"You know I appreciate you."
"Appreciate me? Oof. Shot after shot Ash. Come on Ash you love me." You say wrapping your arm around her. "Say it."
"You're so weird sometimes." Ashley says as she pushes you away.
"You love me, say it."
"No."
"Say it."
"No."
"Say it."
"Y/N no."
"Come on Ash say it."
"Another day when you're not threatening me."
"Threatening? So dramatic." You say shaking your head.
Bickering. It's what best friends do. And it went on the whole night.
Ashley never gave in to your ‘threat’ that night.
But that was months ago.
- - - -
You always heard that being in love was something so unique, so magical, so special. They said that falling in love would make you understand what all the fuss was about.
Apparently it also made people crazy, which made you absolutely terrified. How can love make someone crazy? Crazy in love?
It terrified you, how could love make someone crazy? Fears of loving someone was always on your mind.
Because how is that possible? Is it even possible? To be crazy in love?
Is it?
Another question that was constantly crossing your mind.
"Are you listening to me?" Rose asks you.
"I am yeah." You say turning to face her, giving her all your attention.
"So as I was saying, I told Pinoe to grab me food before the game and she forgot it!" Rose shouts, hands on your shoulders as she shook you.
"Devastating." You say shaking your head.
"So much." Rose says with a sigh, defeated, she laid back on the couch. "I was hungry."
Some of the girls from the national team met at Trinity's apartment the night before the gala you would all be attending.
You glanced up and saw Ashley laughing at whatever Trinity was saying. Typical.
"So how's this side of the country treating you?" Rose asks you with a smile. "Good I hope?"
"Good indeed." You answer, looking at Rose with a smile. "I'm liking it here."
Rose smiled at you then looked up at the ceiling, you glanced at Ashley once again only to see that she was looking at you. She smiled at you, the look on her face seemed different, but nevertheless you smiled back and looked back at Rose.
"How's Seattle treating you?" You ask, leaning back on the couch beside Rose.
"You know what? I absolutely love it there, although I don't get enough sun as you can clearly see, but still I love it there." Rose says looking at you.
"Good, you deserve that. A city that truly appreciates you." You say, Rose smiles at you as she hugs you.
"You know Ash, I say tomorrow at the gala we find a good dancing partner." Trinity says as she puts her arm around Ashley.
"That's why I have you though? Right?" Ashley says confused.
"Oh, you're right, crap. Damn you're a terrible dance partner then." Trinity says and laughs.
"Fuck you." Ashley says with a chuckle as she punched Trinity on the arm.
"You're too easy to mess with." Trinity says.
"Whatever." Ashley says as she then glanced at you, but you were so focused talking to Rose you didn't notice.
The night went on for hours, yet you and Ashley had yet to catch up since you had gotten back from your trip. It would have to wait until the following night.
- - - -
It was finally gala night. Everyone dressed nicely, all ready to enjoy the night. Or at least get through the night.
"Are you okay? You're so out of it, come on we have to go inside."
"I'm fine, I'm just tired and want to be in bed."
"Typical."
You walked into the ballroom where many players of the league had already arrived. Luckily for you the gala was being hosted in the same city you played for.
So here you were, alongside your good friend Naomi.
“Nervous?” Naomi asks you as she walks right beside you.
“A little?” You say with a nervous laugh. “It’s our second year but having to socialize is not something I want to do.”
“At least you’ll be able to reunite with Ashley. She said you two haven’t talked since the season was over?”
“I’ve been busy.”
“Right.”
“I have!” You exclaim.
“You two play for the same team, what do you mean you’re busy. Also she’s literally your best friend.” Naomi says as she pulls you to the side.
“I have brand stuff.”
“You’re such a bad liar.” Naomi says shaking her head. “Come on let’s go take a seat.”
You followed Naomi, trying your hardest to not make eye contact with anyone because socializing was something you were trying to avoid.
“Y/N! Where were you! I thought we were coming together.” Trinity says as she hugs you from behind.
“I had to wait for Naomi to get ready, she takes a long time.” You say turning to look at Naomi.
“Don't try putting this on me, I didn’t take long, you were the one who couldn’t find their shoes.”
“Sounds about right.” Trinity says with a laugh. “Ash is looking for you. She’s been looking for you the whole time we’ve been here.”
“I forgot to text her I was getting here late.” You say as you pull your phone. “Yikes, I didn’t see her calls or messages. Whoops.”
“She’s with Sophia and Rose, I think they were grabbing drinks.” Trinity says and you nod.
“Alright, alright. Let’s get this started! Grab the person beside you and let’s dance!” The DJ shouts, as they put some upbeat music.
“Come on.” Trinity says pulling you by the arm and towards the dance floor. “You can look for Ash later.”
“My worst nightmare.” You groan as you’re pulled onto the dance floor. “I’d rather go get a drink.”
“Too late.” Trinity shouts as she starts dancing. “Come on Y/N, dance!”
"Isn't Ash your dancing partner?" You ask.
"Oh well, she's not here and you are, so for now dance with me."
You looked around and saw everyone dancing, you couldn’t just stand there like a statue. You took a deep breath and began to let go, the music filling your ears and you started to dance to the music.
“There we go!” Trinity shouts as she grabs your hands. “Ash is going to kill me for making you dance with me.”
“No she won’t.”
“Oh she most definitely will, she wants to talk to you.” Trinity shouts just enough for you to hear and you furrow your eyebrows.
“About?”
“She didn’t tell me but she said she wanted to talk to you. Seemed important if you ask me.”
“Huh.” You hummed.
“You two have been so weird. What secrets do you guys have hidden?” Trinity asks you which makes you laugh.
“There's no secrets.” You say confused.
Well it may have been a tiny lie. Well you kept a secret, not just from Trinity but also from Ashley, and well just about everyone.
After dancing with Trinity for a good amount of time, you stepped away and went to grab a drink. The lights were dimmed, just enough to know where you were walking.
Heading towards the bar, you bumped into teammates and friends, stopping and chatting before you finally got to the bar. Once at the bar you asked for a drink, non alcoholic, because you didn’t want to say or do anything you’d regret the following morning.
You grabbed your drink and stood in the back. Searching for Ashley.
As you took another sip from your drink you had finally spotted Ashley, who just so happened to look up. You smiled and waved at her, in the darkened room you could still see her beautiful eyes, she smiled at you and subtly waved at you.
“You know you can’t avoid her forever.” Naomi says, startling you.
“Oh my god, you scared me.” You say as you clutch your drink.
“You should tell her you know. You two have been best friends since like forever. Since before I met you, and I met you at college.” Naomi says. “You should tell her you l-.”
“Ah ah ah. I don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re best friends. We hang out together and we bake cookies sometimes. We watch movies and we cry together, well she cries to sad dog videos.” You say nonchalantly.
“Your eyes say something else.” Naomi says softly as she reaches for your hand.
“My eyes say I don’t want to be here.”
“If that’s what helps you get through the day.” Naomi says patting your back. "But if you were to ask me, I see something else."
You took another sip, thanking yourself as you chose correctly in asking for a non alcoholic drink. You looked around the room once again and saw Ashley from afar. But looked away as soon as she looked up.
Naomi caught a glimpse in Ashley’s eyes, her face. Naomi smiled as she looked at you.
“The eyes never lie.” Naomi whispers to you as she walks away.
Ashley looked at you the entire night. Wondering why you still hadn’t gone to talk to her.
“You told her right? That I wanted to talk to her.” Ashley asked Trinity.
“For the billionth time Ash, I did. I told her.” Trinity says. “Is it that important?”
“Not necessarily I suppose.” Ashley says with a sigh.
“You know what could help the whole you two avoiding each other for like a couple of weeks now?”
“What?”
“You maybe telling Y/N that you know.. you kind of, maybe, well.. that you l-.”
“Nope.” Ashley says cutting Trinity off before she could finish her sentence. “You give me terrible advice.”
“Says the one who can’t talk to her best friend because she’s too scared.” Trinity says.
“I’m not scared. I’m just waiting.”
“Waiting for what? A sign?”
“Maybe.”
“You got mad at her for taking her shirt off in front of you after you had flicked a ton of flour on her. Ash, babe. Best friends don’t get mad. Plus she’s done that plenty of times in front of you, in front of like everyone, like in the locker room when we all change. And for you to suddenly get mad.. Please, I’m not dumb.” Trinity says as she takes a sip of her drink. "Or blind. There's only one reason that could make it all make sense to me. And I'm sure I'm right."
"She's my best friend. If it's what I'm thinking you're thinking, you're completely wrong Trin."
"Friends to lovers, you gotta love that." Trinity says with a smirk. "On a serious note, who says she doesn't feel the same way."
"I say." Ashley says. "And I never said I feel that way."
"You kind of just gave it away. Also, I think you both feel it and know it deep down." Trinity whispers as she looks up and sees you talking to Naomi. “You both have that look, I just think neither of you realize it or maybe don’t want to see it. OR maybe you two are just clueless. You guys just need a little push.”
"I hate you." Ashley whispers.
"You gotta love me though, or else who would help sad little you." Trinity says patting the top of Ashley's head.
Later on in the night as you were sitting you felt arms wrap around you. You looked up and saw Ashley was the one hugging you.
“Hey.” You say as you hug Ashley back, grabbing her hands.
“Hey.” Ashley says with a smile.
“What’s up?”
"Nothing. Wanted to say hi." Ashley says as she lets go.
“Trinity said you wanted to talk?” You say.
“Oh yeah well I just wanted to ask you if you were coming but you’re here so my question has been answered. Ashley says with a smile.
“Oh, well, do you want to go out and get some fresh air?” You ask and she nodded.
You grabbed your coat before walking out, knowing she’d get cold soon enough.
“What are they up to?” Sophia asks Trinity.
“I don’t even know anymore. They’re so not… themselves.” Kelley says as she grabs food off of Sophia’s plate.
"They do know we were right here, right?" Rose asks as she looked at the rest of the girls.
"I'm going to be honest, I highly doubt they even noticed us." Trinity says. "They seem to forget that there's other people around these days."
"What do you know?" Sophia asks Trinity, turning around to get a read on her face. "Oh you know something."
"I'm an observer yes, I'm also nosy. Unfortunately this time, I know nothing. Yet."
As you walked out, you both felt the cool breeze on your skin.
“I’m cold.” Ashley says immediately.
“I knew you’d say that, which is why I brought my coat.” You say as you help Ashley put on your coat.
“Thank you.” Ashley says with a smile, buttoning up the coat you had brought out for her.
“That’s what best friends are for.” You say with a smile. “Plus I know you always get cold.”
You both stayed silent, watching people walk by the street.
“So..” Ashley says filling in the silence.
“So?” You ask.
“The gala is great so far don’t you think?”
“Yeah, no it’s been great. I like seeing everyone I don’t usually get to see.” You say nodding.
There’s silence again.
You turned to look at Ashley, something in the look she had made, made you wonder so many things. Could it be? Were you just maybe imagining things?
Yeah. You had to be imagining things. Right? But maybe not? You couldn't prove it, but maybe, just maybe you were seeing just enough to know.
“I like your necklace it’s pretty.”
“Thank you, it was a gift.” Ashley says with a smile and you nod. “I’ve missed you. I know we see each other like a lot but I miss having my best friend around. So we can do things together.”
“Has Trinity not been of any help?” You ask.
“She’s a terrible baker.” Ashley says with a laugh, you laughed as well, knowing well that Trinity was in fact not a good baker.
“I’m sorry I’ve had to put you through such a difficult situation.” You say sarcastically. “You poor poor thing.”
“Shut up.” Ashley says with a laugh, as she lightly punched you. “But it’s been such a pain. I hope you don’t leave me for that long again.”
“I won’t I promise.”
“Good.”
You both smiled and stayed silent again.
The silence wasn't awkward, there was no tension. It felt nice, even though there was silence, you both felt at peace, felt comfortable.
Silence. But this time, this silence was beginning to feel different than before.
You were both realizing it. A different type of silence. A silence you both had never felt.
After a short while, standing in silence, you both walked back inside. But shortly after the Gala was over you had to talk to Naomi.
“Do you mind going with Trinity back to her apartment? Ash and I are going for a drive.” You whisper.
“Drive? Did you tell her that I said that the eyes never lie.” Naomi asks.
“No. We're just heading back to change real quick and then going on for a drive. We haven't seen each other in a while, you said it yourself. We're going to catch up." You say truthfully.
"Okay then. Don't be out too late though." Naomi says and you nod.
After the gala was over, you and Ashley went back to your apartment, changing into some comfier clothes, then heading back out.
"It's a beautiful night out." Ashley says as you drive.
"It always is." You say as you take a quick glance at Ashley who was looking out the window.
"So where are we going? We have lots of catching up to do." Ashley says turning back around.
“I say we go where we usually go. Deal?”
“Sounds great.”
"I do feel like this is going to be a long drive, should we maybe get coffee?"
"My weakness, yes please. There's a drive thru coffee shop a couple of blocks down, it's open 24/7."
"Well bless their souls for being open at midnight." You answer as you drive to the coffee shop.
Once you both had your coffee, you drove down to the closest but also furthest place from town, away from so many lights. To a beautiful scenic view.
You put your hand out, setting it on Ashley’s thigh.
“What?” Ashley asks as she takes a sip of her coffee.
“Hold my hand won’t you.”
“Why?”
“When did you start asking so many questions? You just take my hand. Just hold it you weirdo.” You say as you shake your hand.
Ashley held onto your hand, it felt like you were in high school again. Sneaking out to get snacks and going out for a drive.
The rest of the drive was left in a comfortable silence. Nothing out of the ordinary, just comfortable silence, and the sound of the wind coming through the windows.
You turned for another quick glance, but this time Ashley was looking at you as well. You smiled and looked back at the road.
"What?" Ashley asks as she started to giggle nervously.
"Nothing."
"You're being weird."
"I'm being weird? You're being weird." You say with a laugh.
At the next stop you turned and saw the light of the traffic light reflecting off of Ashley’s necklace.
“I like your necklace.”
“Well you gave it to me for my twenty second birthday.” Ashley says with a smile.
As you arrived, you took out the blanket out from the backseat.
“See I’m grateful you have a truck, but not those big ugly trucks. Just a cool, small truck.” Ashley says, you turn around and look confused.
“What?” You ask with a laugh. “It’s a Toyota Tacoma.”
“Yeah a nice truck.” Ashley says and you laugh.
You continue laughing as you open the back, placing the blanket, then go back to the backseat and grab some pillows.
“Come on.” You say as you extend your hand out to help her on.
Ashley grabbed onto your hand as she got on, coffee still in her hand. You both laid down, legs extended out as you both looked up.
“I love when we come out and stargaze.” Ashley whispers as she pulls on the second blanket. “It’s always so pretty.”
“To get out of all the noise in the city?” You ask.
“That and being able to just stare at the sky with you in silence. Because even when we’re hanging out and it’s silent it’s still so enjoyable.” Ashley says as she turns on her side to face you.
You sat up to take another sip of your coffee, no way you were sleeping anytime soon.
Ashley sat up as well, taking a sip from her coffee as well.
And although there was pure silence, somehow it was also loud.
Naomi’s words were stuck in the back of your mind the whole time, maybe that was what was loud.
“The eyes never lie.”
As you both sat up, Ashley looked down at her hands, she was fidgeting with her fingers. You knew that meant she was nervous.
“Hey, what’s going on? What’s making you so nervous?” You ask, but Ashley didn’t look up. “Ash? Look up. Look at me. What’s going on?”
You scooted closer to her as she looked up and your shoulders brushed against each other.
You grabbed her hand, while looking at her worryingly. Ash was never one to get nervous or anxious when you were around.
“The eyes never lie.”
Naomi’s words ringing in your mind. If there were a mute button on those words, you’d press it immediately.
“I-.” Ashley stopped herself from speaking, you furrowed your eyebrows. “I-.”
“Ash?”
For once Ashley couldn’t speak, couldn’t say what she wanted to say. She was starting to get irritated with herself.
You’re her best friend. Ashley thought. Why was it so hard to talk to you?
“Ash? Ash you’re kind of scaring me here.” You say, Ashley sighed as she placed her hand on your cheek.
That single touch, your heart felt like it was about to jump out.
Ashley was aware of what she had done but her mind, her heart was racing.
And in the silence, the look in each others eyes. You both could hear it, feel it.
While staring at one another, no one chose to speak.
Silence.
And in the silence, you knew. You both knew.
You cupped her face with your hands and then leaned in, connecting your lips with hers.
You both moved in synch, you couldn’t seem to pull away. Neither of you could pull away. As you both kissed in what seemed liked a long awaited kiss, the silence only made it so much clearer to you.
You were in love.
In love with your best friend.
Finally after pulling away, Ashley rested her forehead against yours, bumping her nose against yours, pecking your lips once again before actually pulling away.
Neither of you said a word, the silence seemed to say it all for you both. You grabbed her hand again and just closed your eyes for a few seconds.
The kiss wasn’t awkward, the silence was comfortable.
Ashley rested her head on your shoulder as you both looked at the view in front of you.
“I like you.” Ashley whispers.
“I like you too. If me reciprocating wasn’t clear.” You say softly making Ashley giggle.
You weren’t just going to admit you loved her, not like this. And although you definitely knew, you weren’t going to say those three words just yet.
Ashley smiled as she grabbed your hand, lifting it up and kissing the top of your hand.
Ashley felt her heart pound, but also feeling how at ease she felt with you. Holding your hand this time was not the same as before, this time she knew you had felt the same way.
The drive back was peaceful, comfortable. Still, neither of you had said another word but there seemed to be no awkwardness or tension.
It just felt right.
"I'm going to take you out tomorrow. A real date." You say right before you both went to your separate bedrooms.
"Let's see if you remember that tomorrow morning."
"I'll remember don't you worry."
As you both laid in your separate beds, the bedrooms across each other, you were both staring at the ceiling.
Ashley silently cheered as she kicked her feet against the mattress. She covered her face with a pillow, although no one could see her she hid as if someone could. Her smile never fading away.
You were smiling at the ceiling, hoping and wondering if Ashley was maybe just as giddy as you were. You pulled your blanket over your face, smiling as wide as you possibly could.
The two of you seemed to not get enough sleep. Replaying the entire night over and over in your heads. Or it was possibly the coffee you both had. Definitely the first thing though.
The following morning you got up bright and early to try and make breakfast, but seeing as you weren’t home for a while. There were barely any groceries, mostly just bread, so toast it was.
"Something smells burnt." Ashley says groggily as she lifted her head up from the table.
Burnt toast.
"I have a broken toaster, you can't blame me." You say turning around. It was a lie, well half lie. It was a broken toaster, but you had forgotten you had put toast. Too distracted by looking at her.
Messy hair and a smile on her face as she stretched.
"I like your shirt."
"Thanks it's comfy. Oh and yours." Ashley smiled as she spun around.
"My clothes do look good on you. Good sleep?"
"The best, oh and I'm keeping this shirt." Ashley says as she walks over to you. "Burnt toast on a Sunday type of day I suppose."
"It's my specialty." You say with a smile, Ashley stepped to the side and jumped on the counter. "I'll make a good breakfast with what I can find, and not burnt."
Ashley smiled as she swung her legs.
"Y/N?"
"Yeah?"
"Why do you have a target picture frame of a family stock photo on your coffee table."
"I haven't gotten to it yet okay? I can't find a worthy picture of going in the picture frame. It has to be nice, pretty, and something I love."
"So a family stock photo is better than an empty picture frame?" Ashley asks.
"Umm, yes."
"You're so weird."
"Well you kissed this weirdo last night." You say turning around to face her.
"Touché."
Although technically you two weren’t official yet, it felt like you two had been together for years now. I guess that's the advantage of being best friends for many years now.
You walked over to Ashley, a smile on both her face and yours. You stood in front of her, in between her legs, big smile on your face.
“I like you.” You say as you leaned in.
“I like you.”
“But we established that already didn't we." You say with a smile, Ashley simply nodded. "Date. Tonight."
"You remembered." Ashley says sounding surprised.
"Hey I keep my word, so tonight. Date?"
"Date."
"Great." You say then lean in to give her a small kiss.
You didn't know if it would get better than this, but if it did, then maybe you would understand everything everyone always said about being in love.
- - - -
Three months. Three months of being officially together, and you had to say they were by far the best three months of your life.
You asked Ashley to be your girlfriend on your third date, it was an unforgettable night.
Today though, today you were out with friends, and with your girlfriend beside you.
"You're so pretty." Ashley whispers as you walked behind the rest of the girls.
"You're beautiful."
Forgetting you were with other people, you stopped on the sidewalk to kiss her.
"We're going to leave you both here, with no ride home." Trinity shouts.
"Come on before they actually leave us." Ashley says pulling away.
"One more." You say with a smile, pulling her back into you and kissing her again.
"Y/N."
"I had to get one more." You say with a grin.
You walked hand in hand, swinging your hands as if you two were in your own little world. In your minds, you obviously were.
Today had made up from the fight you guys had the week before about some absurd miscommunication mishap. Well it wasn't absurd, you thought it was, which is probably why you had gotten into a fight, but you stayed up all night talking and trying to get Ashley to stop being mad at you.
So here you were, going shopping with her and the girls, and that meant buying her a few things. But buying her things isn't what Ashley wanted, she just wanted to spend time with you and your group of friends.
After a long shopping spree, you returned to your apartment. Which was becoming yours and Ashley's apartment, having more and more of her stuff magically appear. But you were loving it.
You loved her, but you weren't telling her yet, not yet. Because as much as it did, you knew those three words are so powerful and mean a lot.
As you got home the first thing you both had gone to do was lay on the bed, and as you both did, you both looked up at the ceiling, music in the background.
Ashley turned to look at you, a smile on her face as she saw you had closed your eyes.
She was going to say it, say those three words. Tell you that she has loved you all this time but didn't want to rush it, she was about to tell you that when she sees you all she feels is warmth and love.
But she held back, wondering if it was too early to say it.
But how could it be early when you both had loved each other for longer than you had initially thought.
Nevertheless you both didn't say it that night.
- - - -
Six months now, six beautiful months. It seemed like the more time passed by, the happier you got, you never thought this much happiness was real. You thought it was all fairytale talk, but it wasn't.
Ashley opened her eyes in the middle of the night, the thoughts in her head couldn't let her sleep. You were also awake, the thoughts in your head also couldn't let you sleep.
The both of you looked up at ceiling, not a single word was said as you held hands.
A few minutes later you both turned on your side, you both looked at each other, the look on Ashley's face was strange, different. You smiled softly at her as she still looked at you differently, you couldn't figure out the look on her face, but it didn't matter you still leaned into her touch.
"You're my best friend." Ashley whispers as she caresses your cheek. Leaning in to rest her forehead against yours. Her whole body seemed to relax in that moment.
It seemed like everything changed, and it definitely did.
You knew it then and there, her words, the strange look on her face, it all made sense.
You knew what it was.
You didn't say anything, you just embraced it all, the warmth, the pure bliss.
She was in love and so were you.
But neither of you had to say it, you both knew it right there. The moment she said it, she knew by your body language.
You both knew.
The silence filled the room again, but it was once again, a comfortable silence.
- - - -
One year. One year with Ashley and it was still as beautiful and magical as it was in the beginning.
So there you were, standing in the kitchen making breakfast for Ashley. You made pancakes with blueberries, trying your best to not burn anything this time.
As you finished plating the food, you felt arms wrap around you. You turned your head and kissed Ashley on the cheek.
"Good morning."
"Good morning, how long have you been up?" Ashley asks as she kisses your back.
"An hour at most." You answer as you flip the pancake.
"How are you not tired? We had training yesterday. And it was brutal."
"Oh I'm definitely feeling it, but nothing can stop me from making you breakfast." You say as you grab the plates and take them to the table.
"You could always sleep in with me."
"If I were to do that we'd be in bed until the afternoon because you never want to get out of bed." You say with a look.
"You’re acting as if you would actually get out of bed. You’re a liar. You know damn well you wouldn’t want to get out of bed either.”
“Okay true but my point still stands.” You say which resulted in Ashley making a weird face.
“No it really doesn’t.” Ashley says shaking her head. "Like at all."
You looked at Ashley, her smile could light up the whole city, you were sure of it.
The moment that went through your head you thought that was so corny, and mentally asked yourself, how did you get to this point?
So far everyone was right, love does make people crazy and apparently corny.
"Something smells burnt." Ashley says making your eyes widen.
"Crap. My toast."
"Oh the irony, burnt toast on a Sunday again."
“Well at least your pancakes are intact, my toast on the other hand, are definitely not intact. The price I pay for admiring you.”
“So it’s my fault?”
“Yes. You’re too distracting.”
“Was it my fault last week when you burnt your pasta? Because I can assure you I wasn’t home when that took place.”
“I was thinking of you.”
“You’re unbelievable.” Ashley says with a chuckle, slightly shoving you.
“You know, Trin says you keep a picture of me in your locker.”
“How can I not? I have one of you in my locker, in my car, in my wallet. The list goes on.”
“Ashley Sanchez is down bad everyone.” You say as you sit beside her. “And down bad for me.”
“You’re so right. I’m not even going to deny it.” Ashley says making you laugh. “But so are you, for me obviously.”
“I’d be crazy not to be.”
“You’re my person. I hope you know that.” Ashley says as she reaches for your hand. “And you always will be.”
“I feel the same way about you.”
Ashley smiled as she looked at you, her eyes shined in a way it had never shined before, eyes so bright and filled with love, admiration, everything.
Your heart was beating faster than normal, your eyes shined bright, you were sure your eyes were in the shape of hearts. How could someone be so beautiful, wonderful, kind, and just so utterly perfect. That someone was your girlfriend.
Even now you still couldn’t believe it.
After finishing breakfast, you both cleaned the apartment, and once that was finished you headed outside.
The entire front yard was covered in snow, the small attempted snowman was beside the door, rocks as the eyes and a piece of raw penne pasta as the nose. Ashley’s signature, as she couldn’t find a carrot in the fridge.
“I can’t believe it’s still snowing.” Ashley says as she looks up, eyes closed and tongue out as she tried to catch snowflakes.
“I can’t believe we train in this weather.” You say as you grab the snow shovel that was leaned against your car.
“Are you really going to shovel the snow right now? Come and make some snow angels with me.”
“If you want us to be stuck here tomorrow, sure.”
“It’s pre season training babe. Come, here I’ll even put some music on, I brought the speaker out. What do you want to listen to?”
“Anything you want.” You say as you shovel some of the snow while Ashley decided on a song.
“Great, Taylor Swift it is.” Ashley says as she presses play. “Now come, we don’t have to go in for training tomorrow.”
You looked up and saw Ashley dancing in the snow, you dropped the snow shovel and ran towards her. You lifted her up and spun her around.
The song playing didn’t register in your mind, so enchanted, so amazed, so mesmerized, and just so focused on what was currently happening.
All you heard was four words from the song.
You are in love
It was as if it was telling you, confirming it to you. What you were feeling was true and real. Then two more words confirmed it all.
True Love.
Ashley laughed as you spun her around, her hands in the air, you spun her around for a few more seconds before stopping.
You smiled, Ashley was still laughing at your antics of spinning her around.
Right then and there, you truly understood, you understood why people said falling in love was so magical, unique, so beautiful. You understood why people lost their minds.
Being in love was the best thing that could ever happen to someone.
Without even registering it, you said the three words you never thought you’d ever tell anyone. But you did.
“I love you.”
You understood why people fight for the person they love.
Because when you are in love, sometimes love can make you crazy. But in a good way.
You helped Ashley back on the ground, her hands went up to cup your face, a big smile as she read your face.
“I love you.”
You smiled as you wrapped your arms around her waist, pulling her in for a kiss. Ashley laughed as she pulled away, her eyes were watery as she looked at you like you hung the stars just for her. She loves you.
“I’ve wanted to tell you for so long, deep in my heart I just always knew I loved you.”
“That makes two of us.” Ashley says as she booped your nose. “I love you. I truly do love you.”
The fears of loving someone were no longer around.
Because you knew, you knew that you are in love.
“I love you."
The song continued playing and replaying over and over. Probably because Ashley didn't know she accidentally pressed the 'replay one song' option. But maybe it was a good idea, because it became your song.
And inside your shared apartment, one day in the next three years, the target picture frame of a family stock photo on the coffee table would be replaced by a picture of you both on your wedding day, for every guest in your home to see. Someone you love was placed in the picture frame, you just had to wait, and it was worth the wait. You always wanted a worthy picture to be placed, a picture of something you loved, in this case it was someone you love.
Your wife.
That is life now. And you were happy it was the way it turned out to be, because it's beautiful and wonderful, magical. You knew what it was from the beginning, and you know now what you feel.

CASUAL
Tumblr media
taylor swift masterlist
pairing: taylor swift x fem!reader
summary: inspired by the song ‘casual’ by chappell roan
warnings: angst, mentions of sex
a/n: taylor definitely listens to chappell roan
i never imagined that i’d be involved in a situation like this. meeting taylor swift was a dream come true, but what followed was something completely unexpected and confusing. our relationship was something casual, or so I kept telling myself.
it all began after one of taylor’s concerts, the eras tour. we had a brief but meaningful conversation backstage, and it didn’t take long for us to develop a connection. it started innocently enough—dinner, laughter, and casual flirtation. but the chemistry between us was undeniable. what began as casual fun quickly evolved into something more intimate.
the first time we were together was at taylor’s parents’ house. they were out of town, and taylor invited me over to hang out. as we sat on the couch, watching a movie, our casual conversation gradually became more charged. before I knew it, we were in her bathroom, the small space echoing with our breaths and soft moans. it was impulsive and thrilling, a secret that made everything feel electric.
the secrecy was a thrill, but it also cast a shadow. taylor wasn’t out yet, and she was adamant that our arrangement remain discreet. she was clear from the beginning: this was just physical, nothing more. and for a while, i convinced myself that i could handle that.
however, as time passed, i found it increasingly difficult to compartmentalize my feelings. every shared glance, every touch seemed to deepen my connection to her. yet, taylor was always careful to remind me of the boundaries. our relationship was casual, she said, and we needed to keep it that way.
one night, after a long day, we found ourselves in her car, parked in a quiet spot. the intimacy of the moment took over as taylor leaned in for a kiss. it wasn’t long before our hands and lips were exploring each other, the passenger seat becoming an unintended stage for our desire. even then, amid the stolen moments and the urgency, there was a sense of underlying tension.
despite the physical closeness, there was an emotional distance that was hard to ignore. i was falling for her, harder than i ever thought i would. the more we were together, the more i felt like i was losing myself in her. my heart yearned for something more, something that felt like it could never be.
the breaking point came one evening when i realized i couldn’t keep pretending that everything was fine. i needed to talk to taylor, to confront the feelings i had been trying to ignore.
when I confronted her, i was shaking, my voice barely above a whisper. “taylor, i can’t do this anymore. i’ve fallen for you, and it hurts too much to keep pretending it’s just casual.”
her face was a mix of regret and resolve. “Y/N, you know this was never supposed to be more than what it was. i’m not in a place where I can be open about this. you’re an amazing person, but… i can’t offer you more than what we’ve had.”
i felt tears prickling at my eyes, my heart breaking. “but i thought... i thought maybe, just maybe, you felt the same.”
she shook her head gently, her expression soft but firm. “i’m sorry. this was meant to be just physical. i never wanted you to get hurt.”
it was a painful truth, one i had to accept. i tried to keep my composure, but inside, i was shattered. i had to walk away, leaving behind the hope that maybe one day things would be different…
in the end, i realised that love doesn’t always fit neatly into the confines of what we want or expect. taylor and i had shared something special, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the boundaries she had set. i walked away with a heavy heart, knowing that sometimes, the hardest part of falling in love is realizing that it’s not enough to make it real.
taylor’s secret remained intact, but the truth was that i couldn’t keep my feelings hidden anymore. i had to move on, even though my heart still ached for what could have been. it was a hard lesson in the limits of casual, and one that i hoped would teach me to protect my heart better in the future.

This one is part of my Taylor’s Version series! View the masterlist here <3
Summary: After leaving a toxic relationship, your facade of a white picket fence life can’t fool the eyes of your friendly neighbor Sam Winchester.

This one is a little different from the original Supernatural storyline at the start, Sam does have a white picket fence life and is still a hunter, just in case it's not clear enough in the story :) also part 2 maybe?? let me know!!
"I've been spending the last eight months Thinking all love ever does Is break and burn, and end But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again"

“Fuck!” You shout, only just dodging his hit. You see the rage glow in his eyes, your cheeks are flushed maroon and your forehead sweating. “I’m gonna fucking kill you,” he states, his eyes fixated on you. He lunges forward with his fist clenched so hard his knuckles are white.
“No!” you shriek, taking the blow. You try your best to defend yourself but end up staggering into the china cabinet. You cower toward the floor, tensing your arms and legs hoping to be able to cover yourself from any more hurt.
It doesn’t help.
♱⁺. ⋆˙✧⋆✧˙⋆⊹.♱
A few days had gone by at this point and you’re finally allowed outside to go grocery shopping. Carrying the bags from your car, the sun shines lovingly on your face. Birds are chirping. There’s a couple of kids out playing fetch with their dog on the street. Sometimes days like this don’t make you feel any better than the Hell you’re living in. If anything, they help emphasise your insecurities that are made a hell of a lot worse because of that dipshit back home.
You don’t want to go home.
“Hey,” a voice startles you from behind. You turn to the left and see your new neighbour walk down the porch stairs. “Oh, hey Sam.” You greet him, a half-forced smile planted on your face as you squint from the sun.
“How you doing?” He asks, placing his hands on his hips, acting completely naturally. You nod hesitantly. “Yeah, I’m good. You?” Conversations with him are a little awkward for many reasons. He had just moved in last week. He had probably heard what happened the night before and he’s also extremely good-looking. You can’t look him in the eye. It’s too daunting.
“Yeah, uh, I’m sorry to bring it up—“He gets cut off and your boyfriend slams the front door and shouts something over at you. His face reveals that he’s mad and this time you have no idea why. “I’m sorry,” You whisper, “I need to go.” You finish, rushing off and leaving him standing there. His eyes never left you. Sam sighs and turns around to go back inside, keeping his gaze fixed on you to ensure that you make it inside without your boyfriend making a scene.
♱⁺. ⋆˙✧⋆✧˙⋆⊹.♱
It had been a couple of weeks and Sam had tried to talk to you about what he heard that night, but you never brought it up again. Maybe he had a change of heart and thought that if he brought it up, it could cause an issue, or even have upset you. Sometimes bringing things back up isn’t worth the hassle.
You haven’t seen him much, except for this 1967 Chevy Impala that parks outside every other day in the early hours of the morning where you can have a tiny bit of freedom from your everyday life. Window-watching and reading books in the moonlight has been your escape for as long as you can remember. But this time, instead of Sam, and you assume his brother, leaving toward the car, he makes his way over and attempts to peer through your window. Although he can’t see anything, he turns to his brother and says something, pointing back at your window.
Out of pure curiosity and some courage, you attempt to open the window without your boyfriend noticing. You slide it up, turning around to check on him each time. You’re damn lucky he’s a heavy sleeper.
“What are you doing?” You whisper-shout, confused as to what they’re talking about.
“What do you mean? Why are you awake?” He shouts back.
“You’re at my window, pointing at me with this strange man. So tell me, what the hell are you doing?”
The guy who’s with him huffs, shrugging his shoulders. He mutters something to himself and looks offended. “What’s his problem?” you reply, and Sam smirks.
“Strange guy?”
“Yeah?”
“What do I look like, a kidnapper?” He mentions, and it makes you chuckle quietly. “Listen, lady, are you coming down or what? Prince Charming here wants to rescue you from your... palace.” Sam looks at him, eyebrows furrowed. “What?” He questions, his mouth slightly agape, as he just cannot believe his brother outed him like that.
“Just come down, will you? Pack some things.”
♱⁺. ⋆˙✧⋆✧˙⋆⊹.♱
You had practically moved across the country to live with Sam and his brother, Dean. Sam knew exactly what was happening back home and had made a deal with himself to get you out, even if it killed him.
This morning, the pair of you walk down to a cafe near a motel you’re currently residing in. Whilst ordering, Sam tells you to go find a seat and he’ll bring your drink over. You agree and find a booth in the corner. He brings your drink over and sits opposite you.
His demeanour is calm, yet like he needs to ask you something. You dismiss it though and assume it’s because he’s dealt with a lot within the past few weeks. And so have you.
“Y/N,” he starts, taking a sip of his black coffee. “Can I ask you something?”
“I feel like it’s gonna be a tough question.” You laugh, and Sam smirks. His dimple deepened into his cheek. “What made you want to leave your old life behind? And to just trust me after only knowing me for a month?” He asks, a genuine question you haven’t even thought of answering. You struggle to find an answer, because truly, there’s nothing that comes to mind.
“I mean... you want the truth?” You ask, and he nods. You update him what exactly what happened, who did it and why you thought to just say ‘fuck it’ and have the balls to finally have a chance to escape whether that meant losing your life for it. Sam has been concentrating on you telling your part so much that he looks emotional himself. His eyes are soft and understanding. They’re glossed over as if glazed with icing sugar. You can tell just from his aura he’s a sweet guy. Putting your trust in him seems like the right thing to do.
You both share your childhood trauma and as much as it hurts to bring it back up, you both poke jokes and find a little humour in all of it.
But at least in this little cafe on a random Wednesday morning, this place, this atmosphere, and Sam allows you to begin again.

i think he knows / ruben dias
Tumblr media
summary: ruben knows exactly what you're thinking -because he's thinking about it too, has been thinking about it for so long. but he wants you to do something about it. until you do.
warnings: bold and italic text = song lyrics (i think he knows, by taylor swift). again, badly traslated portuguese (sorry, ruben anon, didn't want to bother you 😭). mentions of alcohol and the consumption of. use of john and jack as plot devices bc they do almost nothing jajajaj. like, one mention of "inappropriate" dancing??? don't know if i've forgotten anything else.
wc: 1.3k words.
i think he knows his footprints on the sidewalk lead to where i can't stop, go there every night.
"ruben, you need to stop bringing me to these places", you huff, annoyed, while holding the jacket he draped over your shoulders to try and keep you warm in the cold, manchester night. the walk from his car to the club's entrance wasn't that long, but you didn't want to go out in the first place: only accompanying your best friend because he asked you to.
once he closes the passenger side door behind you, he places his warm hand against your small back, and you start walking by his side, hoping the cold hair hitting your face helps to freeze the heat inundating your cheeks. "who would i bring if not you, meu anjo?" (my angel), he asks, tilting his head like a confused dog. ruben had the widest smile on his face, and it's the same grin that had you agreeing with him to come in the first place. you curse under your breath for having a best friend so charming. after announcing your names to the employee at the door, they let you two inside the club, his hand finding yours instantly when the sea of people gets too hard to navigate.
his height proves to be of great advantage when he needs to find his teammates in the multitude. it's easier for him, just looking ahead and seeing john's fluffy hair sticking out like a sore thumb in the bar, his laugh too almost being heard through the loud music when you eventually get to them.
"ah, there they are!" city's number five starts clapping when he sees you two, approaching to greet you two: ruben, with a side hug and a pat on the back, you, with a barely-there kiss on the cheek. "i thought you two weren't coming", jack laughs from behind him, and you greet him with a confused look. "why? i thought ruben had confirmed with you".
"well, you look very pretty tonight, maybe ruben had finally-".
the winger learns to keep his mouth shut when ruben glares at him, already knowing what his mate would have said if he hadn't intercepted the sentence: "maybe ruben had finally grown a pair". it wasn't a secret to anyone, much less his teammates that heard him talking about you everyday, that he was whipped. and ruben was quite certain that you wanted him too, at least in some way, but for whatever reason, he couldn't do anything about it.
being scared wasn't an excuse. he prided himself on it, on being fearless: it's what being a defender requires, he always says. but maybe he feared more being rejected by you, and thus, losing your friendship, than getting a ball aimed directly at his face. he was sure that missing you would definitely hurt more than a black eye or a broken nose.
"a pint, yeah?" he asks, directly in your ear, once he has come back to his senses. you nod approvingly, but before he drops your hand to go find your drink, he feels your slightly smaller hand tightening over his: your silent way of asking him if he was okay. ruben only hums in affirmation, only to realize you can’t actually hear him, so he just smiles before planting a kiss on your temple, and running away.
i think he knows his hands around a cold glass make me wanna know that body like it's mine.
the drinks keep flowing for everyone, except ruben. he’s known for not drinking alcohol, and keeping his uptight appearance at all times: that’s where his teammates balance the matter out.
“i think you should go check over your friend there,” said jack in an overly animated tone when the music subsided a little, and you turned to set your eyes on the table where ruben was seated. he had his elbows resting over the table, forearms on show due to him rolling his long sleeved white shirt up. the top buttons were messily undone, but he still looked like he was sculpted by angels. his hands were occupied by a cold glass containing some form of non-alcoholic beverage, for sure, and although it wasn’t a sight that you hadn’t seen before, it made you feel warm inside.
he divided his attention from john, who was the one keeping him company, before searching for someone in the sea of people. he stopped when he found you, but his demeanor changed when he saw jack holding tightly to your waist. the glass suddenly looked like it could burst at any minute by the amount of force he was gripping it with, and his eyebrows frowned in confusion at the thought of jack being the one holding you like that, and not him.
ruben didn’t have to think twice before downing his drink in one go, like it could provide him some kind of liquid confidence -the one that only alcohol could give you-, before standing up and making a beeline towards his teammate and you.
poor man, if he only knew that little grealish wasn’t trying to make a move on you, but rather, trying to keep his balance after having, certainly, too much to drink, his feet wouldn't have carried him to you so quickly, almost like a bull seeing red.
“john needs you over there, mate”.
wanna see what's under that attitude. like, i want you, bless my soul.
if you didn’t know your best friend so well, you might have missed the cues. but even now, while having certainly too many pints, you can recognise he’s mad.
“why are you angry?”.
he’s perplexed, like he isn’t expecting you to see right through him. in a second, his jaw unclenches, and he’s back to his usual persona: the ruben you know, the one you love. “wasn’t angry, anjo (angel), just missed you,” he says. and even if it’s not the whole truth, it’s half of it, and you try to hide the heat flowing to your cheeks by turning, his chest now flushed against you back. “dance with me, then,” you jokingly said, taking his hands into yours to settle them in your waist.
at first, he’s unsure. his hands only rest at your side, and he’s barely moving, though you keep on trying to press your body against his, even if he’s intended to keep his distance. normally, you loved this part about him, how he’s always so respectful, so caring, just so unically him. but not tonight. whether it is because of the alcohol you consumed, the place being so hot or the indecent thoughts you had about him all night -that appeared to come out of nowhere-, tonight you want to rile him up.
“god, you’re no fun. jack’s a better dancer than you”.
it seems to light something in him, because his grip tightens, and suddenly he doesn’t care about you moving your ass directly onto his crotch. instead, his body's impossibly closer to yours, at the point where you can feel his breath on your neck, fuelling the goosebumps that erupt on your skin. ruben seems to know what you're doing, or what you're trying to do, because he whispers it in your ear. "meu anjo se transformou em um demônio esta noite, não é certo?". (my angel turned into a devil tonight, isn't that right?).
when you turn to look at ruben, his eyes are the darkest you've ever seen them. even with the low and coloured lights at the club, which difficult your vision, you can feel his piercing stare. your arms go in the air, before wrapping them around his neck like it was second nature, and his hands find their home in your waist, holding you flush against him. you hope your doe eyes made him understand, without you having to verbally tell him, that you want him to take you home. and magically, it seems like the case, when he grins, his million dollar smile before taking your hand in his and dragging you towards the exit, without turning around to tell your friends -his teammates, about your sudden departure.
i ain't gotta tell him, i think he knows.

pairings: lee heeseung x f! reader
warnings: angst + hurt no comfort
💌: ok i never considered writing anything other than smut bc i dont think im suited for fluff/angst but im listening to miss taylor swift and champagne problems + right where you left me are so heartbreaking agh i love taylor she’s so good at telling stories thru songs ♡__♡ anyway here’s something based off them pls lmk if u like or not T_T ps i didnt know how to finish it so yeahhhh this is my frist time writing angst agh!!!!!!
Tumblr media
your relationship with heeseung was perfect. too perfect, you think. it’s a miracle the two of you lasted as long as you did, but you loved him, and you’d do anything to keep him in your life until the love you shared ate away at your being, consuming you entirely before spitting you out, leaving behind a broken mess of the person you once were.
you realize it’s gone too far when he proposes. he’d planned a romantic candlelit dinner for two on your anniversary. you looked gorgeous, he thought, anxiety coursing through his veins as he mentally prepared to ask for your hand in marriage.
heeseung waits until the two of you finish your meals before sliding out of the booth and getting on one knee, a black box in hand as his eyes well up with tears. “yn,” he starts, “i’ve loved you since the moment i met you. all i want in this life is you by my side, please just say yes.” his hands are shaking as he awaits your answer.
silence. your mouth opens and closes as you try to voice your thoughts but everything is too much, and you’re unable to give him the answer he wants. it tears your heart in two when he swallows thickly, unshed tears pooling in his lashline.
“oh.” he rises to his feet, nearly tripping as he clumsily reaches for his wallet, slapping a wad of cash on the table before making his way out of the restaurant.
you chase after him desperately, “heeseung, wait please. i’m sorry, i love you too, so much but- ”
he’s cornered and embarrassed and angry. “but what,” he sneers, sadness evident on his face despite the bite in his voice. but he’s not angry with you, he’s angry at himself because he was foolish enough to believe he was good enough for you.
again you’re hesitating to answer him, tears streaming down your cheeks as regret settles in your bones, and heeseung’s itching to comfort you, to press kisses along your face until you smile at him and all is forgotten but he can’t. not this time. “but i’m not good for you!” your voice cracks as you reveal your deepest fears to him. “you deserve so much better than me, it’s not fair to keep you to myself when i know i’ll never be enough.”
“you don’t get to decide that.” his tone is stern, “i do. i’m free to make my own choices and i choose you, so please,” he’s begging now, “just pick me.”
you clear your throat and wipe at your face, streaks of mascara staining your cheeks and undereyes.
“i can’t.”
this moment has replayed in your head every single day since your breakup and it feels like your heart is being ripped out of your chest when every morning you’re forced to remember that heeseung is no longer in your life. forced to remember the anguish he so obviously felt and how you were the cause.

Sorry this ask turned into an essay — as I explain I have a personal connection to this topic and a lot of thoughts on it, ha
On the topic of Taylor’s discussion of Joe’s depression — I have never seen anyone claim that she has made fun of it, but I have seen some discussions from people who feel that she’s been unfair or insensitive with how she’s spoken about it, or that she broke up with him because he was “too depressed” and that she was blaming him for things he can’t control. Renegade has been used as an example of this, and more recently So Long London (specifically “you sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days).
I don’t want to speak for anyone but myself here or invalidate anyone’s feelings of hurt with how Taylor addresses these topics (because that is entirely fair to be hurt by if you interpret it in that way), but I will say this: as someone who has been on both sides of this equation (I have clinical depression that I’m in the process of getting medication for, and I’ve also had multiple relationships with people who were going through severe mental health struggles that I was trying to support them through), I don’t think that the way Taylor has referenced Joe’s depression affecting her in her music seems cruel to him. I’ve never gotten the impression that she is blaming him for struggling or that she expected him to just stop struggling and get better, or even that that’s the reason their relationship ended. I think there’s a lot of frustration in those songs, and while I understand why some may balk at that, it can be really frustrating at times to love someone who doesn’t love themselves, or who is pushing you away at every turn. It’s not their fault, and I don’t think Taylor is framing it as such, but that can make it even more frustrating when it feels like things are breaking down and there is nothing you can do to fix it.
And I feel like it’s kind of taboo to talk about those feelings because (in my experience at least) they’re wrapped up in so much guilt? I was in a relationship very similar to the one described in Renegade once, and I would get into this cycle where my partner would be struggling, I would try to help them, they would push me away and/or say things that would really hurt me, I would feel upset and hurt, but then feel so guilty for being upset and hurt because I knew they didn’t mean it the way it felt and that this wasn’t about me, so I would just keep those feelings to myself and say nothing, and it would start all over again. These aren’t pretty emotions at all, and I fully understand why some people are hurt by the way Taylor talks about them, but I think there’s a big difference between “I’m frustrated because my partner is struggling and I feel like I’m giving them everything I have but nothing ever changes and it’s hurting me” and “my partner is too depressed to deal with, why won’t they just get over it?”
I’ve had loved ones tell me tell me to just stop being depressed before — I know that hurt very well, and at least to me, this feels different. Honestly I really appreciate songs like Renegade and So Long London because hearing someone else talk about that experience has made me feel less like I was some uniquely horrible person incapable of being the perfect supporting partner that I should have been. I think it’s just a shitty, frustrating situation where no one is solely to blame, and I think that’s how Taylor presents it.
But again, this is just my opinion — I can totally see how and why people might interpret them differently and feel hurt by them, and I don’t want to speak over those feelings at all
Hi friend! First of all tysm for being so open and honest about your personal struggles with both yourself and past relationships - I'm grateful you feel you can be safe here talking about that. And secondly in your grace and empathy in understanding the many potential sticky layers of feeling here and how this might be ruffly and uncomfortable for people. I love that so much.
My interpretation has always very much been in alignment with yours. And I think if this album was seeking to do any one thing it was to wield honesty like a blunt force instrument - even and especially when the truth is uncomfortable and can be alienating. I've never once interpreted her documentation of a partner's mental health struggles as "get over it" (is there anyone who better understands how fucking hard it is to get over literally anything than Taylor?). But I feel the line that haunts me most is, "I gave you all my best me's / My endless empathy / And all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier". And the uncomfortable truth is that it is so incredibly painful to be in love with someone who doesn't love themselves and who has proven (despite years of begging and pleading and patience and kindness) that they are not interested in becoming someone who can love you better. And it's unfair and shitty and horrible to have your "spine split from carrying [both of you] up the hill" for years. You feel sad for them. You feel sad for you. You feel sad that you feel sad. And then you feel mad that they are making you sad. And and and.

OUR SUMMER.
chapter thirteen – daylight.
previous. series masterlist. next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You shifted from side to side trying to find a better position in your tent, one that would aloud sleep to come, but nothing seemed to help. It was already 23:00 and you’ve never felt so awake. Huffing and quickly getting up, you headed to the exit.
As much as it was hard to admit, Neteyam’s words hammered in your brain all the time. “You’ll always be my first choice.". It almost haunted you.
Sitting in a quieter spot your gaze stopped at Tsireya’s guitar, you were quick to grab it, occupying your mind with familiar notes and songs. The night breeze bringing a comforting sensation. Unbeknownst to you, Neteyam watched from a distance, admiring.
A heavy blanket fell into your shoulders, protecting you from the cold. Looking up, you’d recognize him from a mile away, by touch, voice, demeanor.
“Can’t sleep?” He asked while caressing your back, trying to warm you up.
“Unfortunately. You too?”
“Yes, do you mind if I stay?”
“Never, come here.” Opening your arms so Neteyam could snuggle into you, the cover did it’s job wrapping the two together. You knees touching his.
“I have something for you.”
“Really?!”
He simply nodded, taking an object from his pocket and heading it to you. It was a bracelet with three small oranges and two flowers, your heart skipped a beat.
“This is so beautiful ‘Teyam, thank you. When did you get it?!”
“A few weeks ago, I thought of you the moment I saw it.”
“Me?”
“You.” Neteyam felt apprehensive, he still feared to make you uncomfortable by confessing, but also knew that he’d probably explode if he didn’t.
Neteyam’s feelings for you made him weak on the knees, coward, afraid. However, it also made him strong, brave, hopeful, better. These feelings, mutual or not, were one of the purest things in him, it should be worth sharing, worth having.
“Y/n.”
“Yes?”
“I need to tell you something.”
His serious tone made you worried. “I’m all ears.”
“I don’t believe I love you just as a friend anymore.” He let out, scanning your face. “If you want me to act platonic and take this back I will, promise, but I can’t keep hiding it. I’m hurt when you’re hurt, happy when you’re happy. You’re the first person I think about when something bad or good happens, and the first I want to share everything with. I am always hoping that you see me the way that I see you, because you’re all I see. I… really care about you.”
You were dumbstruck, mouth hanging open. Even if your suspicions existed, it still seemed unreal to hear this.
“Say something? Please. I’m sorry if-”
“You had no idea, did you?” Holding his face, you made sure to stare at him, both with teary eyes. “I love you too, so much.”
You couldn’t help but smile when Neteyam’s lips found yours, giving you a loving kiss, followed by multiple pecs and hugs, as if he was making up for lost time. His touch was soft, tender, wishing to express everything he couldn’t before. All the unspoken feelings were, finally, known.

I'll Never Leave You - Dean Winchester
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Summary : You thought your father, Dean Winchester, would always be by your side.
Warnings : Spoiler last episode of the show!, reader is Dean's daughter, no age mention but reader is a young adult, angst, character death, feeling of hopelessness, loss of a parent, bittersweet ending, maybe some grammatical mistakes as English isn't my first language, tell me if you see some or if I missed any warnings.
Word count : 4.6k
French version (will be published 22/09/2024 at 9pm)
Song inspiration : Marjorie by Taylor Swift
Laying on your bed, a book in hand and your dog Miracle at your feet, you patiently wait for your dad and your Uncle Sam to come home from the hunt. Since the apocalypses, the wars between Angels, Archangels and God have officially stopped, you took a step back from the hunting life. You still help them with the research but you don’t go on the field as much. You can finally have a normal - as normal as it can be when your last name is Winchester - and Dean supports your decision, glad to know your future is full of possibilities.
You’re in the middle of a chapter when you hear the bunker’s door opening. Miracle raises his head while you put your book on the bed. You trot to the entrance where you only find Sam with an emotionless look on his face however you don’t notice it.
“Was the hunt good? Where’s dad?” you question with a smile.
“Y/N, something happened.”
“What? Did you scratch Baby?” you laugh, yet your smile disappears as soon as you see his serious face.
“No, it’s Dean.”
“What is it? Uncle Sam, what happened? Is dad hurt? Where is he?”
“Y/N, wait,” Sam holds you back as you’re about to leave the room. “You should sit down.”
“I don’t want to sit down, I want to know where my dad is.”
“We found a vampire nest so we went there to kill them but Dean got hurt.”
“Is he okay, though, right?”
Sam stays silent for a long second before speaking again.
“One of the vampires pushed them against a beam and there was a spike. He got severely injured.”
“What do you mean, Sam? Tell me my dad is okay!”
“I’m sorry, Y/N, Dean… he died during the hunt.”
Upon hearing this sentence, the floor crumbles underneath your feet. You can’t believe it. You stay speechless whilst Sam keeps talking.
“You dad wanted you to know he’s always been proud of you and he loves you. He also told me-”
“No…,” you interrupt him with watery eyes. “Wh-, How-, it can’t be.” you stutter, shaking your head. “He can’t die! He is Dean Winchester. He’s survived so many things. He can’t be dead!”
“Y/N/N, I’m terribly sorry.”
“No!” you scream when Sam is about to hug you. “I… I need…”
You don’t finish your sentence, too stunned to speak. You run to your room, tears rolling down your face, Miracle hot on your heels. You let the dog in the room before locking yourself in. Completely confused, you don’t know what to stare at. Your eyes look everywhere while Sam’s words are echoing in your head: ‘He died during the hunt.’ You choke whilst big tears stream down your cheeks. You fall to the ground as your heart bleeds. You can’t believe you’ve just lost your dad.
One could think it wouldn’t hurt as much after Dean cheated death so many times, however the pain is still unbearable - if not worse, this time. You grew up with only your dad and your Uncle Sam as your mom died in childbirth. Your family isn’t big but your love for them knows no limit. You had to overcome a lot of loss the past years, whether it was Bobby, Charlie, Castiel or other people, though the pain you felt at their death is nothing compared to what you’re feeling right now. You’re lost, begging in the empty for your dad to come back to you. Miracle has his head on your legs, trying to comfort you. You stare at him and you hurt a bit more.
Dean never wanted a dog, no matter how many times you asked him for one. He always used to say with your way of life, you couldn’t take care of one and above all, he’d say no dog would ever get in the Impala as long as he’s alive. However, the second your life went back to normal, he rescued Miracle. You secretly suspect he’s always wanted a dog and your whim was the perfect excuse to adopt one. When he brought Miracle home, you weren’t surprised to see he was the one he got. Miracle managed to find his way to Dean’s heart since they first met, though he would never admit it… would have never admitted it.
Dean was finally having the life he’s always wanted, far away from the repeating apocalypses and it was taken from him as quickly as it came. It isn’t fair. You dad doesn’t deserve to die this young and you still need him. You’ll always need him.
You stay with your back against the door and Miracle in your arms for several hours. Actually, you don’t know how long you stayed in this position. You’re numb, time is standing still since your discussion with Sam. Maybe only two hours passed or a whole day, you have no idea and you don’t have the strength to check it on your phone. All you want is your dad. You don’t care what time it is or if you need to eat. You just want Dean and his comfort.
You think back to all the times you lost Dean and all the times he came back. There always was a solution. There must be one for this time, too. His time hasn’t come yet. You still can bring back your dad to life, no matter the sacrifice you have to make. You dry your cheeks and stand up. Determined, you leave your room and walk to the library, Miracle following you. You take several lore books you already know and others you’ve never read but could be useful. On the table, you have at least four piles of ten books, yet you’re still motivated. You could read thousands of books, as long as you find a solution, that’s all that matters. You take one and start reading it and taking notes with information that might be helpful.
You’ve just finished a whole stack when Sam’s voice snaps you out of your reading, startling you. Sam stares at you, worried while you don’t pay much attention to him before going back to your research. Sam sits in front of you yet, he stays silent. He watches you for a few minutes before speaking.
“Wanna talk about it?”
“No.”
“Alright. I’m gonna give Dean a Hunter’s funeral tomorrow. If you wanna join me.”
“Don’t burn his body!” you exclaim following his information.
“I have to and you know it.”
“No! If you do it, it’ll be even harder to save him.”
“What exactly are you researching, Y/N?” Sam questions, fearing your answer.
“A way to resuscitate dad.”
“Y/N, we can’t do that.” He firmly says and you look at him sternly.
“Why? That didn’t stop you and dad from doing it numerous times before, why would it be any different now?”
“Because everytime we wanted to cheat death, it caused major issues, you know that damn well.”
“Nothing we can’t handle. Dad can’t be dead, not like this, not now that everything is starting to get better. I’m gonna bring him back, no matter the price.” you affirm, opening a new book.
“Even if you have to die?” Sam interrogated, surprised.
“As long as he’s alive, that’s all that matters.”
“Y/N, your dad wouldn’t want you to sacrifice your life for him. He’d want you to live it.”
“It means nothing if he isn’t there.” you say, your lip quivering. “I need him, Uncle Sam. I have to bring him back.”
“We can’t.”
“We damn well can! We can find a solution.” you argue before having an idea. “I’m even sure if we asked Jack, he’d do it. After all, the current God likes us more than the last one, we’re his family.”
“Y/N, we can’t save him, not this time.” Sam insists, making you angry.
“If you don’t want to save your big brother who sacrificed everything for you, that’s your problem, as for me, I’m gonna save him, so either you help me or you leave me alone.”
“It’s time he rests in peace, especially after everything he went through.”
“Because of everything he went through, he deserves to live without worrying about Lucifer, God or another Archangel.”
You look at Sam, sure of yourself. Sam doesn’t reply right away before weighing pros and cons and admitting to you:
“Dean specifically asked to not be brought back to life because he knew too well the consequences so respect his wish.”
“He was dying, he didn’t know what he wanted. Now, leave me, I have lots of research to do.”
Defeated, Sam sighs before leaving the library. He sees how desperate and in denial you are. He just hopes you’ll realise very soon bringing Dean back is dangerous and useless. Though he fears you’ll realise it too late and you’ll suffer even more. Either way, he promised Dean to be there for you and that’s what he’s going to do. Whether you want it or not, Sam will stay by your side to comfort you the instant you’ll accept Dean’s death.
The following day, Sam gives Dean a Hunter’s funeral alone. He tried to convince you to come but you refused, preferring to lose yourself in your research. Sam wished he could have done the funeral later, fearing you might regret it later for missing this last goodbye to Dean, unfortunately, it had to be done as soon as possible.
Sam worries more and more for you. You’ve completely shut yourself out. You only read books in the library and do more advanced research on the internet without sleeping or eating. He brings you food however you almost never eat and you pull all-nighter after the other, despite his disapproval. He doesn’t know what to do to help you. He knew you’d be devastated when he told you Dean’s death but he didn’t expect this reaction.
A few weeks later, the situation hasn’t evolved, except that now you’re locked in your room and not in the library as a way to avoid Sam. You’re still mad at him for not wanting to help you save your father. You don’t understand how he can be this passive. Your father would have done everything to bring back Sam if the roles were reversed, you’re sure of it.
You finish reading the last book you took from the library when you have an idea. You think you know where to look, except you didn’t see the book when you rummage through all the shelves or you would have started with this one right away. Just in case, you go through the mess that is your room now before going to the library and checking everywhere four times. You try to remember where it might be when a memory comes into your mind. You saw it last in your dad’s bedroom a few weeks before his death. You haven’t stepped a foot there since Dean’s last hunt. You just can’t. You’d like to, though. Normally, whenever you’re feeling down, you go find your dad in his room so he can comfort you. However, if you went to his room now, you’d face a loud silence and you can’t face it.
Reluctantly, you end up walking slowly to Dean’s bedroom. You stay in front of the door for some time, pondering if you should go in or not. You don’t know if you’re ready to enter his room but on the other hand, you need this book, it might be the solution. You take a deep breath and open the door. The corridor light penetrates the room and you can see the bed which is made, his music collection and the book you’re looking for on the desk. You turn on the light and take big steps to his desk, wanting to leave the room as soon as possible. However, you don’t do it. On the desk chair, you find one of your dad’s shirts. You get teary eyes as you take it and bring the cloth to your nose. You smell the familiar scent and you burst into tears in one second. You wish Dean would come to his room and tell you not to steal one of his tapes like you usually do. Everytime he’d admonish you, he’d pretend it bothered him when in reality, he loved knowing he passed on his love for classic rock to you. His bedroom is now all that’s left of him and you don’t want to lose this place, even the most insignificant piece of scrap such as the menu from the burger place a few miles away is now of an inestimable value. Your eyes fall on a piece of paper lying in the middle of the desk. Carefully, you read it and find it’s an application to become a firefighter on which you can see his signature with his name on the bottom of the paper. You sob when you think back of the first time your dad confessed to you he would have loved to be one if he hadn’t been a hunter.
***
It was a few years ago during a fall morning. Dean had woken you up early. Too early. At 4:00 P.M. to be specific. He had woken you up because he wanted to have a father-daughter day. This was how you found yourself in the Impala this early whilst you were still mentally sleeping and your dad was happy to spend the day with you.
“You know, a father-daughter day can start at 10:00 P.M.,” you complained, yawning.
“You’re not gonna regret waking up early, trust me. We’re almost there.”
“It better be amazing or during the next roadtrip I pick the music.”
“Hell no! You know the rules.” Dean refused.
“Yeah, driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole, whatever. I deserve some compensation!”
“I got you some donuts.” he exclaimed, showing the pink box at your feet.
“It’s a good start.”
A few minutes later, you arrived in front of a lake. Dean told you to get out of the car and to lean on the hood with the donuts in hand. Despite the morning breeze, you started eating while watching the sunrise. The sky was a beautiful amber colour and it was reflecting on the lake, making the scene even more stunning. It was peaceful, save for the birds which were waking up.
“So, wasn’t it worth it?” Dean asked with a smirk.
“Ok, you were right and besides, the donuts are delicious. I didn’t think of you as a fan of watching the sunrise.”
“I can be interested in nature!”
“Stop it or next thing you know, you’re only gonna eat salad like Uncle Sam.” you answered with a fake fear expression on your face to which Dean rolled his eyes.
“The fact is we’re having a great time as a father and daughter, away from all the supernatural threats.” Dean said, holding you close to him.
“True.”
“And like this, I can make it up a little bit for the father I am.”
“You don’t have to make it up. You’re a great dad.”
“No children should grow up like you did, like I did. I always promised myself I wouldn't make the same mistakes as my father and here you are in the middle of all this crap between two High School periods.” He grumbled, avoiding your gaze.
“Do I have to remind you I started hunting because I followed you, not because you forced me to?”
“I’m still mad at you for that. You shouldn’t have followed us when you didn’t even know what you were fighting, it could have ended badly!”
“The fact is I saved your ass from some werewolves.” you retorted with a proud smile.
“You especially got lucky. I didn’t know what I would have done if you had gotten hurt.”
“I learned from the best, nothing can happen to me.”
“That doesn’t mean anything. With Sam, we always got ourselves out of those messes just on time. I don’t like knowing you’re part of the hunting life.” Dean confessed with sad eyes.
“I chose it. You always give me a way out and I never take it because I like to hunt.”
“Maybe, but I wish you had the opportunity to lead a normal life, you deserve it.”
“I might not hunt my whole life, I don’t know for sure. For now, it’s what I want to do, though. To be honest, I don’t even know what I’d do if I weren’t a hunter. Besides, you deserve a normal life, too, you know.” you affirmed, firmly.
“It’s too late for me. And I’m not made for the apple pie life but it can be different for you.”
Your heart broke in your chest upon hearing your dad saying this. You wish his life had been different, that his dad had given him the choice when he was younger. Dean might have kept everything buried inside yet, you could read him like an open book. No matter what he affirmed you, you knew your dad wished for a calmer life.
“What would you have done, if you hadn’t been a hunter?” you randomly asked.
“What do you mean?”
“If you had the apple pie life, what would be your job?”
“I don’t know.” he replied but you didn’t believe him.
“You’re telling me you never thought about it ? You’re lying. I can totally see you in a job where you help others.”
“I would have loved to be a firefighter.” Dean confessed after marking a pause.
“You would have been a good firefighter, I’m sure of it. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll have your chance?”
“I don’t think so. I made up my mind I’ll always be a hunter and besides without hunting, I would have never met your mother and you wouldn’t be here so I’m grateful for this life.” he affirmed with a genuine smile.
“You’ll always be here, right?”
“Always.” he promised.
You kept watching the sunrise while talking about more random topics, you particularly complained about some teachers and Dean shared his High School experiences - whilst leaving behind some details as to not be a bad influence.
The rest of the day, Dean taught you how to drive Baby, something that didn’t happen often. You were so happy to see your dad trusting you this much. You carefully listened to Dean to avoid making any mistakes. Dean, as for him, loved sharing this knowledge with you, despite having some anxiety over Baby potentially being injured at any given moment. After that day, this place by the lake quickly became your father-daughter spot.
***
In hindsight, you realise to what extent Dean could have lived the life he wanted. He was probably going to go less and less on hunts so he could do the job he always loved and his chance at a normal life has been ripped away from him. After everything he went through, he deserved this chance.
Furthermore, you become aware you’ll never have a father-daughter day again where Dean wakes you before the sun so you could enjoy every instant. Had you known, you would have made sure to memorise every second of your last day. All of these memories are part of the past and you can’t bear the idea of it. You can’t stay another day away from your dad, you’re desperate and you must save him. You keep the shirt in your hand while you close the door then, you pray to Jack, looking up
“Please, Jack, if you can hear me, you have to help me. I’ll bother you only this one time, I promise. I won’t ask for anything else. I just need my father, you have to bring him back. Please, help me.”
You keep begging as you close your eyes as if it gave more strength to your prayers. After a few minutes, Jack’s voice saying your name resonates in the room. You open your eyes and throw yourself in his arms. You missed him so much. You quickly considered Jack as your little brother after he was born so the second he took over Chuck, you heart broke. You’re glad to see Jack replied to your call, despite his responsibilities.
“I’m happy to see you, Y/N.”
“Me too, you have no idea.”
“You prayed so we could talk about Dean. Let me tell you, he is in Heaven. He deserves it after everything he’s done.” he informs you with a genuine smile.
“He particularly deserves to live. Jack, I know I’m asking for a lot but he can’t stay in Heaven, he has a life here, he has to live it.”
“I can’t do that and you know it.”
“You’re the new God, of course you can!” you exclaim, appalled.
“After everything he’s sacrificed, he can finally rest.”
“No, he can finally live! Jack, you have to save him.” you beg, tears in your eyes.
“I can’t break the new balance we just made and also, he doesn’t want to, Y/N, he knows the price to pay and he doesn’t want you and Sam to pay it, you in particular.” Jack says, calmly.
“You’re lying! My dad would never leave me. Please, Jack, I’m begging you to help me. Whether you do it or not, I’ll find a way but with your help, I’ll cause less damage.”
“My answer stays the same. I’m sorry.” he insists, making you mad.
“Leave. I’ll do it alone. I don’t need you! Leave!”
Disappointed, Jack disappears, leaving you alone in Dean’s room. You can’t understand why no one wants to help you. You’re not asking to bring back a monster, just your father so why is everyone letting you down? Your tears who had stopped rolling down earlier find their way back on your cheeks again in a second. You’re sick of everything. You’re sick of crying. You’re sick of no one helping you. And more specifically, you’re sick of not having your father.
Mentally tired, you end up laying down on Dean’s bed and you hold the shirt close to you, hoping it’ll bring you some sense of comfort. You keep crying until you finally fall asleep for the first time in weeks.
A light breeze going over your body wakes you up. You open your eyes, not understanding where it comes from and you find yourself on the backseat of Dean’s car. You just have the time to look up when you see the car door opened and your dad telling you to get out of the car. Surprised, you need a second before jumping into his arms. Dean hugs you back and strokes your back while you pay attention to his shoulders moving at the rhythm of his breath to make sure he’s alive. After a few minutes, you break the embrace and Dean drags you so you can lean against the hood of the Impala which is parked in front of the lake. Dean puts his arm around your shoulder whilst you put your head against his.
“Dad, is this a dream or real? I’m confused, I haven’t found a solution yet so how can you be here? And how did I get in the Impala?”
“Jack must have found a way for us to meet again.” Dean answers, giving you hope, in spite of himself.
“So, is it all good? You’re safe?”
“No, sweetheart. Jack and Sam were right when they said I didn’t want to be brought back to life.”
“Why, though? You finally had everything you wanted!” you anger, taking a step back from Dean.
“I can’t keep on dying and coming back to life, I had to die for good one day.”
“Yeah, when you’d be old, very old, not now!”
“I wish it could have been later, too, but it is what it is, there’s nothing we can’t do. Y/N/N, I don’t want you to spend your life trying to find a way to bring me back, it always ends badly. I promise you, I regret nothing, I’m fine and I can finally rest. You have to keep living without worrying about me.” he tells you, calmly.
“But I need you, dad.” you retort, shaking your head. “There’s so much I don’t know, there’s so many questions I should have asked you about the supernatural, what I’m supposed to do, on how to be and even more questions I haven’t thought about yet. It’s too hard without you.” you say, your voice breaking.
“You’ll be okay, I know you will. You’re a fighter, a Winchester. I’m proud of you and the woman you became, I hope you know that.”
“Uncle Sam told me, yeah.”
“Don’t push him away. He tries his best to support you while respecting what I asked him.” Dean tenderly states.
“You told me you’d never leave me. You promised you’d always be here.”
“And I meant it. I’ll always be by your side even if you don’t see me. I’ll never leave you and when the moment comes, we’ll meet again.”
“I want us to meet again now.” you cry and Dean takes you in his arms.
“I wish we could but we can’t. I’m sorry we didn’t have much time together. I love you, sweetheart, never forget it.”
“I love you, too, dad.” you say before breaking the embrace. “I’ll apologise to Uncle Sam, I shouldn’t have yelled at him.”
“He isn’t mad at you, I’m sure of it. It’ll be okay, don’t worry.” he says, kissing your temple. “Come on, let’s enjoy this moment. Donuts?”
A small smile finds its way to your face as soon as he hands you a donut. You take it and eat it, enjoying this precious moment. Mentally, you thank Jack and apologise to him before focusing back on the lake illuminated by the sunrise until you slowly fall back asleep.
The second you wake up, you’re in Dean’s room again, his shirt next to yours. A single tear streams down your face yet, this time, this tear isn’t only for the pain of losing your dad. This tear is full of sadness, yes, but also of joy as you got one last goodbye. This tear rolls down because you know Dean’s death is still affecting you notwithstanding, he’s right, he can’t be brought back to life and you have to accept it. You know that despite everything, he’s still all around you.
You look at the clock on the nightstand and discover it’s still early and the sun is still rising in the sky. You take one of your dad’s jackets in his closet and leave the bunker with Miracle who woke up when he heard you. Outside, you admire the dawn, your heart pinching in your chest a little. No matter how many sunrises you’ll have to live without Dean, you promise yourself to have at least a day during the week where you’ll wake up early and think about your dad. You want to keep him alive in your head and for this, you want to keep the traditions you had when he was still there.
The day officially started, you grab Baby’s keys and drive downtown, more specifically to the Fire Academy. You enter the building and wait for your turn at the reception. As soon as it’s your turn, the woman tells you to come closer and asks what you need.
“I’d like to apply to be a firefighter, please.”
The woman gives you some information and papers to fill and when she’s done, you thank her and go back to the Impala. Sat on the driver seat, you look at the papers with a bittersweet smile. Though you don’t see Dean, you know he’s here, right next to you, happy to see you officially quit the hunting life and realise your dreams and his.

i hate accidents (except when we went from friends to this)
“Oh, god, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you, I don’t know what came over me, you’re just so hurt and I was so scared and I didn’t know what to do and -”
Link cuts himself off as he glances up from Taylor’s still-glazed expression to his forehead. Before his eyes, the gash stitches itself closed, the open wound fading to a pink scar that pales to white before disappearing entirely.
Lincoln remembers hearing the words “kiss it better” throughout his entire childhood. He remembers the way his dads would patch up his scraped knees with ointment and a bandage and top it all off with a tiny kiss before treating him to a hard candy from their first aid kit for being such a good boy.
Never once had Link thought that the phrase could be literal. Or that his newfound powers could make it literal.
Or: Link discovers a rather unorthodox way of using Lay On Hands thanks to one Taylor Swift, and for some reason, he can’t seem to stop finding excuses to perfect his new skills. Fortunately, Taylor is more than happy to help.
once / twice / thrice, pt. 1 / thrice, pt. 2
twice (‘cause it’s gonna be alright)
The second time it happens, it’s not an accident.
Taylor invited Link to his house on the pretense of doing homework together (who knew saving the world meant having so many late assignments?) and maybe watching some anime later.
It had taken Link some convincing at first, but Taylor thinks he’s finally got him hooked on Blue Lock: Keyed Up!!! (which is good, considering it’s the only soccer anime that Taylor’s watched).
Unfortunately, though, homework comes first. Which sucks, because there are about a million and one better things that a protagonist like him could be doing, but he doesn’t want to worry his mom about his grades slipping any further.
Plus, Taylor missed an additional afternoon’s worth of classes yesterday for a long-overdue orthodontist appointment (his jaw aches at the reminder), so he has extra extra make-up work. Ugh.
At least Link’s passable at science. Normally, Scary could make up some pretty good answers for all of them for their English work, but she’s out recording some stuff for Erica’s podcast. Normal has cheer practice, so Taylor doesn’t really have much hope for his pile of Spanish worksheets, but at the very least, he and Link are making progress.
Very slow progress.
Taylor accidentally clenches his jaw a little too hard, and the ache in his teeth intensifies from there-but-tolerable to fucking-hell-it-feels-like-someone-is-wrenching-my-upper-jaw-in-two-holy-shit.
He makes a quiet, whimpering sort of noise, and Link looks up from his work immediately, eyebrows all scrunched together and lips downturned in concern. It would be cute if Taylor could focus on anything other than the agony plaguing his mouth.
“You okay, dude?” he asks, shifting closer on Taylor’s king-size mattress.
“Nnnnnnn,” Taylor moans, shaking his head ever so slightly and flopping back against the pillows dramatically (but carefully, so as not to accidentally make the pain worse somehow). “Teeth hurt.”
“Oh, right, you got your braces adjusted yesterday,” Link gently moves their notebooks and laptops to the side, where they won’t get crushed.
Taylor’s eyes squeeze shut as he tries to do anything but focus on the ache. “Mmm,” he confirms. “And I think maybe my fangs might be growing in? Hard to tell, but I keep accidentally cutting my tongue on my canines, so I think they’re getting sharper.”
“That’s pretty cool,” Link says, and the sincerity in his voice brings a smile to Taylor’s face, which he cuts off with a wince because fuck, ow, that hurt.
“Would be cooler if my entire mouth didn’t hurt like hell, though,” Taylor grumbles.
He opens his eyes to find Link hovering over him, looking worried and… hesitant?
“Jeez, Link, I’m not dying or anything. The torment is endless and the agony neverending, but I will persevere! Ah, fuck,” Taylor mutters, pressing a hand to his cheek, which only seems to make matters worse.
Link’s still looking at him like that, though, so he makes grabby hands to beckon him closer.
“Cuddles would maybe help, though, if you’re just gonna sit there,” he offers.
“I can work with that,” Link says, laughing a little under his breath and leaning back on the pillows beside him.
He opens up his arms and Taylor wedges himself between them, tucking his head under Link’s chin and burying the top portion of his face into his chest, right below his collarbones. He inhales, trying to focus on the smell of laundry detergent and fresh-cut grass and sports deodorant and sweat and something uniquely Link rather than the pain in his jaw, and it works a little.
Link’s arms come around to encircle him, and while Taylor can feel stifled by skin-to-skin contact (he already has enough trouble regulating his own body heat without throwing someone else’s into the mix), the way Link holds him feels… nice. Protective. Link begins to trace tiny, meaningless circles into his back with his thumbs through the fabric of Taylor’s shirt, and the sensation grounds him.
Taylor quietly realizes that he hasn’t felt this safe in a long time.
His mouth still hurts like a bitch, though.
As if on cue, another pulse of pain floods his mouth, and Taylor instinctively clenches his jaw against the feeling, which in hindsight was pretty stupid because it makes the ache intensify tenfold. Taylor lets out a whine into Link’s chest, clutching helplessly at his best friend’s shirt.
He fantasizes somewhat deliriously about taking his teeth and chucking them out of his face where they can’t hurt him.
“That seems like it must be pretty painful,” Link says sadly.
“Nnnnnnnngh,” Taylor replies because yeah, no shit, Sherlock-kun.
“You know,” Link starts out, tone still soft but much more considering, more nervous. Taylor can feel the vibration of Link’s voice against the top of his head, right where it’s pressed against his taller friend’s throat. “I think I can fix that, if you want.”
Taylor pulls away a bit, and Link loosens his hold to allow for some space.
“Well, why didn’t you say so earlier?” Taylor asks. “I know I look totally awesome and composed on the outside, but I am fucking perishing inside. Yes, please, whatever your idea is, I will literally do anything. What were you thinking of, though?”
“Well,” Link says, voice pitching high, “I was thinking, I could, uh. Kiss it better? Like I did last week, if you remember that?” He looks briefly down at Taylor, as he says this, scanning his face for… something. “Oh my god, it would be so embarrassing if you didn’t remember that. Never mind, this is so stupid, sorry, forget I said anything.”
Except Taylor doesn’t really hear that last part because he’s too busy reliving the feeling of Link’s chapped lips pressed against his temple, callused hands cradling the back of his head, big brown eyes that look like black holes in the darkness of sun-off threatening to swallow Taylor completely.
Does Taylor remember last week? That’s like asking someone if they remember that the sky is red. Taylor remembers last week annoyingly well, and he keeps remembering it, and the scene plays and replays as the hellfire within his ribcage flares and the heat rises and he looks up at Link who’s still working himself into some anxiety-ridden ramble and -
Cool it, cool it, part of his mind whispers to him.
Link offered to kiss me, an irritatingly large amount of his brain shrieks back at him, uncool and uncharacteristically nervous and taking up more mental real estate by the second. Boy hugging me boy touching me boy kissing me?
You just need to calm down, the more rational part of his brain assuages. You’re Taylor Swift, you’ve got this.
I’m Taylor Swift, I’ve got this. Taylor mentally chants, strongarming the fire in his chest and turning the flame down to something a bit more bearable. I’ve got this. I’m popular, I’m icy cool, and anyone would be lucky to kiss me. I’ve got this.
Brain successfully rebooted, Taylor nudges at Link’s shoulder, stopping his friend’s mutterings in their tracks.
“As long as you haven’t talked yourself out of it, I’m, like, totally down if you’re still offering. You severely underestimate how desperate I am for pain relief.”
“Oh,” Link says, eyebrows drawn up in surprise. Then, “Really?”
“Yeah, oh,” Taylor echoes back. “Really. The only thing is… don’t you usually have to touch whatever’s hurt for it to work? And like, it’s my teeth, so…”
“Yeah, and?” Link prompts, like he isn’t quite seeing any problem with that and.
Oh.
Oh, Link means kissing kissing. Like, on the mouth. And to get at Taylor’s teeth… that’s like making-out-kissing. Oh, god. Oh my god, okay. This is fine. Sure! Great.
“Oh,” Taylor says aloud. Then, “Okay!”
“Are you sure? About this?” Link questions, searching Taylor’s expression even as he places a slightly-clammy hand to Taylor’s cheek, even as Taylor’s face feels like it lights on fire in response. The clear concern in the upturn of his brows and the gleam in his dark eyes has Taylor humming in assent before he realizes what he’s doing and placing his hand atop Link’s larger one, holding him there as Taylor’s gaze is drawn to his slightly parted lips.
“For the love of god, Link, just kiss me already.”
“Okay,” Lincoln says, quiet and slightly unsteady. And he closes the gap.
It’s clear that this is Link’s first kiss, and Taylor’s pretty sure Link can tell that it’s the first time he’s kissed someone, too (well, someone that isn’t his body pillows).
Link’s lips feel softer against Taylor’s than they had against his forehead. He’s tentative and shy and exceedingly gentle, and Taylor’s unsure if that’s out of the fear of causing him undue pain or if it’s just who Link is, but he appreciates it either way.
Link’s thumb strokes delicately across Taylor’s cheek, almost reverently, like he’s afraid that Taylor will break apart in his arms if he doesn’t treat him with care. Link’s other hand comes to rest at the side of his neck, threading through the hair that’s escaped Taylor’s topknot, and the feeling of it paired with the light press of Link’s lips against his own draws another humming sound from his throat.
Taylor tries his best to reciprocate, mouth pliant against Link’s, free hand fisting in the soft, slippery fabric of his best friend’s shirt and tugging gently as if to bring him in even closer. His other hand moves from atop Link’s to cradle the back of his head and run his fingers through his close-cropped hair.
Link makes a low, soft sort of noise that will no doubt be replaying for weeks on end in Taylor’s head. God, he needs to hear that sound again.
Sadly, though, they’ve run out of air, and Lincoln pulls away only to lean back in and carefully rest his forehead against Taylor’s.
Taylor’s eyelids blink open (oh, he had closed them, when had that happened?) and he comes face-to-face with Link, brown eyes deep and dark, half-lidded and half-dazed, staring directly at him with open affection. His hand still rests on Taylor’s cheek, and Taylor can feel the stark temperature difference there, anxiety-chilled and demonically-overheated, as something flutters hard in his chest.
“Uh, wow,” Link says, quiet and very breathless, and God, who gave him the right to be so beautiful and so adorable at the same time?
Taylor draws his lip in between his teeth and is greeted with a sharp stab of pain.
“Ow, fuck, shit,” Taylor hisses, scooching back to put more distance between the two of them. “Guess that didn’t work, but thanks for trying, Link. You out of spell slots or something?”
With Link’s complexion, it can be difficult to tell when his friend is flushed or flustered, but his wide eyes and cringing expression definitely come across as embarrassed.
“No,” he replies, voice a few octaves higher than normal. “I, uh, forgot? To do the spell.”
At Taylor’s quirked eyebrow, Link elaborates, “I just wanted to make sure I didn’t accidentally hurt you more, and then I got so wrapped up in that that I guess I forgot, and then you did that thing with your hand in my hair, and -” he cuts himself off with a whine, covering his eyes with a hand and dramatically rolling over, the picture of mortification. “Kill me now.”
Taylor laughs, loud and sudden and sharp despite the pain, and Lincoln curls a little further into himself.
“I can just, uh - I made it weird, I can just go, I guess?” Link says in that reedy, nervous way of his, voice cracking toward the end as he sits up, moves to stand -
“Dude,” Taylor clambers across the mattress after him, grabs his wrist. “Where the hell do you think you’re going?”
“I-“ Link gestures with his thumb toward the door. “Home? I mean, I screwed up, and you laughed, and now you probably think I’m so stupid and-“
“Hold up, handsome,” where did that pet name come from - “I wasn’t laughing at you- I mean! I was,” Taylor watches as Link’s expression droops further “- but not to make fun of you! It’s just…” Come on, just say it, you’ve never had trouble speaking your mind before - “endearing.”
Link looks more confused and anxious than anything, but that’s better than sad and anxious, so Taylor takes that as a win.
“Plus, you’re not getting away from me that easy, Li-Wilson,” He adds, tugging his friend a little closer. Link doesn’t resist it.
Taylor allows a smile to pull at his lips, only flinching a little bit at the pain he now expects. “You can try again, you know,” he offers, looking up at Link through his lashes.
“I can?” His friend asks, skin flushed darker across his cheeks. “I didn’t make it too awkward?”
“Nope!” Taylor responds, popping the “p.”
“Nothing awkward about a good old-fashioned makeout session with your best friend!”
“Best friend,” Link echoes, “Right…”
“C’mon,” Taylor goads, crooking a finger toward him as he smirks. “I don’t bite.”
Taylor’s gaze lowers from Link’s face and rests at the side of his friend’s neck, taking note of the sparse freckles there. His teeth feel a little heavier in his mouth.
“Not unless you want me to,” he murmurs.
“What?” Link asks, sounding strangled.
“Don’t worry about it,” Taylor evades.
“If you’re really sure -“
“I am,” Taylor confirms, moving to sit half-gracelessly in his friend’s lap, hands steadying his weight on Link’s strong shoulders. “Now, less tally-talky, more smoochy-smoochy!”
“So demanding,” Link teases, even as he threads his fingers through his hair again. Taylor can hear the smile in his voice without having to look - which is good, because if he did, he’s pretty sure he’d give into the impulse to kiss the curve of his lips without preamble.
“You bet.” Taylor’s voice comes out much breathier than he expects as he meets Link’s eyes. “Don’t forget the spell this time!”
“I won’t! Probably.”
Just like before, Link leans in again, and a slight smile pulls at Taylor’s lips as he meets him halfway.
The sensation of Link’s lips against his own is a little less foreign now, a little less startling. Taylor lets himself melt into it, and just before he closes his eyes he can see the adorable little furrow of concentration between Link’s brows that he gets whenever he’s casting something.
Kissing his best friend tastes like vanilla chapstick and Taylor’s favorite soda. Link had snagged a bottle of lychee Ramune out of his hands earlier, saying something about how carbonation was bad for braces and offering his homemade sports drink instead (which hadn’t tasted too great but wasn’t quite as bad as Taylor had expected). Taylor finds that he doesn’t really mind, now - not when the flavor is even more addictive this way.
Link’s hands come up to cradle the sides of Taylor’s face like some sort of fairytale prince, firm and gentle and insistent all at once. The soft pressure of his friend’s fingertips ghosts along the jut of his jawline, and it’s almost worshipful, like Link sees Taylor as someone to be adored.
The tenderness of it all sends a thrill down Taylor’s spine, and then the chill spreads, unfurling itself through every nerve.
Taylor has been on the receiving end of Link’s magic before, but he’s rarely lucid enough to appreciate it, to bask in the comforting coolness his friend’s Lay On Hands brings. It’s less like running an open cut under cold water and more like a fresh breeze in the middle of a stagnant summer afternoon, he thinks, something blissful and relieving that reminds him of safety, just like the boy he’s kissing. He falls forward into the embrace - both the spell and Link’s affection - as his hands tangle themselves in the back of Link’s athletic shirt, chasing the feeling. Link’s magic is a deeply soothing sensation, a balm to Taylor’s flushed cheeks and fire-bright nerves and burning heart, and he can feel himself melt in Link’s hold, his thoughts reducing to little more than a warm haze against his lips.
Link pulls away after what probably amounted to only a few moments, and Taylor leans after him on instinct. His eyes flutter open just in time to see Link gazing down at him fondly through his lashes, the last dregs of his magic sparking across his irises in anvil-sharp flashes of bronze before fizzling out entirely. His lips are slightly kiss-bruised, and it sends a jolt of satisfaction through Taylor’s stomach as he realizes that he did that.
“Did it work this time?” Link asks him, still cradling Taylor’s face in his hands, thumbs still grazing lightly across his cheeks.
It takes a few seconds for Taylor to register the question, then a few more as he prods at the back of his teeth with his tongue, clenches his jaw experimentally.
“Looks like it!” He confirms happily, though his joy sours a bit as Link’s hands leave his face to lean back on his arms, mourning the loss of contact.
“You’re a genius, Link,” Taylor praises, smiling and then smiling wider when he realizes that he feels no pain whatsoever. “Think you could do that again whenever my joints are acting up?”
He doesn’t really mean it - of course, a bigger part of him than he’d like to admit does, but his tone was supposed to come off as teasing - but Link’s eyes go wide and his cheeks darken further, and maybe Taylor wouldn’t mind at all if his friend takes that one hundred percent seriously.
“I- I mean, if you want t- If it’d help?” He fumbles, face flushing further as he stutters. It’s pretty commonplace to see Link a bit flustered, but it’s different when Taylor knows that he’s the reason for it. It’s pretty cute, in his opinion.
“It’d do more than help. Chronic pain sucks ass, but you’d be, like, my personal angel,” Taylor says, looking up at Link.
You already are, his mind adds for him.
“Sure, then. Anytime. Uh, that’s what friends are for, right?” Link asks, those big brown eyes of his searching Taylor’s face for something.
He said “anytime”, is Taylor’s only coherent thought, one that runs giddy circles in his brain. I kissed Lincoln Li-Wilson. Twice. I just kissed my best friend twice. He said he’d kiss me again. God, I want to kiss him again.
“Mm,” Taylor half-responds, still reeling from the way Link’s hands carded through his hair and smoothed over his cheeks and the way their lips slotted together.
“Oh,” Taylor hears Link say distantly. “Okay, that’s, um. Okay.”
“Mm,” Taylor hums again, still in the process of rebooting what’s left of his brain.
A hand waves in front of Taylor’s face. “Taylor? You okay there, buddy? Did I do the spell wrong somehow? Please tell me I didn’t break you.”
You can break me anytime, Taylor thinks, mind conjuring images he definitely should not be having this close to the subject of his fantasies.
Taylor shakes his head in attempt to clear them. “All good, my man! Just, uh, thinking.” He desperately hopes his face isn’t as red as it feels.
“Wanna get back to homework, then?” Link says, gesturing to the pile of notebooks. “I think one of our make-up quizzes is due tonight.”
“Oh, shit, I forgot about that. We should probably get back to studying, huh.” He scoots away from Link to grab a notebook and his laptop, and for once in his life he misses the body heat of having a person next to him.
“Okay,” Link says, patting the empty space next to him and propping himself up against Taylor’s headboard.Taylor complies, settling himself into place at his side and handing him a pen (ballpoint, blue ink, Link’s favorite kind). He finds his own (a click pen, black gel ink) after a few moments of feeling around on the comforter.
“We’re still on chapter seven, right?” He asks, chewing on the end of his pen as he attempts to decipher the chicken scratch that is his own handwriting.
“Unfortunately,” Link sighs, slinging his left arm around Taylor’s shoulders.
As Taylor leans into Link’s side, he thinks that even though make-up work is bound to be hell, there are much less fortunate things than this. He smiles to himself, and it doesn’t hurt one bit.
