How shit are your parents, Fruits Basket edition, part 1

I’ll be doing this by age of the members rather then what place in the zodiac they have:

Shigure Sohma: We only ever see Shigure’s parents once in the manga, and there is nothing to hint any anger between them.

As stated in from the Fruits Basket fandom wiki: “they do appear to be bothered and tired of Shigure's easy-going personality and his tendency to do everything in his own way.”

Though that might just be more him being Shigure then him being the dog. There has never been any implication on Shigure’s part that he was ever physically or mentally abused, at least not by his parents. Shigure definitely ahs some fucked up shit going on, but tbh a lot of that seems to be around the curse on the family as a whole, and how Shigure feels about Akito and the actions he took with Rin as a result of those feelings. With nothing else to go on, they get a neutral 5/10.

Hatori Sohma: Hatori’s parents are never seen in the manga, and there is only a vague mention of his father’s funeral in one chapter, so most of the information we’re using is from the wiki again (courtesy of the Fruits Basket Fan Book: Cat)

“Hatori was born into the Sohma Family as the only child of his late parents; his mother passed away from illness when he was in elementary school, and his father died of an unspecified illness while Hatori was in high school. Both of his parents were very strict and his home life wasn't very warm, which is the cause of his stoic personality. At some point, the memory suppression technique was passed to him by his father who held that role before him; a technique which has been handed down in his family for generations.”

Hatori’s parents are not great. Not the worst, by any means, in this fucked up family, but still not great. The part about Hatori’s father previously being the memory suppressor raises eyebrows for me though, as this means Hatori’s family is ‘old blood’, it has known about the curse for years, and most likely is prone to either having children who are part of it, or are like the servants of the main house, who are always privy to that knowledge.

4/10. They lose points for potentially being emotionally neglectful of Hatori.

Ayame Sohma: Father is never mentioned or seen. We’ll assume he’s dead or gone.

Ayame’s relationship to his mother is never specifically gone into a lot. But we can make a few guesses based on how the one time we do see her specifically interact with him and with how she treated Yuki.

Ayame’s mum is a grade A bitch.

She makes decisions for her kids based on what benefits her the most, without a care for what happens to said kids. She hated Ayame for being too flamboyant, and probably because she also could not control him. Most likely a narcissist and is definitely emotionally and physically abusive. 0/10

Kureno Sohma: Kureno’s parents are only ever seen once and their interaction is not even with Kureno, but discussing Akira marrying Ren. From the wiki, “Kureno's mother was fine with it as long both of them were happy”. There is never any implication of emotional or physical abuse.

It’s very possible that after Kureno’s curse broke at 16, Akito basically refused to let his parents see him anymore (for fear that news that the curse was broken would get out), as they are never seen nor mentioned by adult Kureno. We’re giving them a neutral 5/10.

Ritsu Sohma: Ritsu’s parents are honestly not that bad. There is never anything to suggest they directly abused Ritsu themselves, and they also suffer anxiety themselves due to how the rest of the Sohma family treats them. I get the feeling that they are from a much lower branch of the family, and that Ritsu being cursed was unexpected to everyone, including members of the main family. To be honest, a good deal of Ritsu’s anxiety and problems seem to come from the family as a whole unit as opposed to his parents.

Despite everything, they seem to love Ritsu, and his mom even said she was worried about Tohru at first because she was scared about an outsider knowing the secret, but after meeting Tohru, she no longer worries about that. If his parents are guilty of anything, it’s for not stranding up for themselves and their son more. Honestly, if there hadn’t been any curse shit, Ritsu probably would’ve grown up with genetic anxiety but not as many other issues. 6/10.

Kagura Sohma: Again, pretty low on the scale of “how shit are your parents”. From the times we do see Kagura’s mum, she’s shown to be a very calm and level-headed woman, but still very caring of Kagura who doesn’t get angry about her double-ended/aggressive personality. She also took Rin in and is shown to at least be understanding of why Rin is the way she is.

Apparently Kagura’s parents used to fight a lot when she was a kid, and her mum would cry after each fight. But by the time Kagura is in university, she and her husband have worked things out and are still together and are also very loving and supportive of Kagura.

I could make the argument they lose points for the fact they don’t seem to be doing much for Rin, but at the same time, what CAN they do? They let Rin know she has a safe roof over her head, and that they won’t judge her for anything, but they cannot do much to speak out against how Akito treats Rin or how Rin reacts to that treatment. 7/10

Rin/Isuzu Sohma: I would say that her parents are the definition of human faeces, but that would be insulting to faeces. At least you can use it as a fertiliser.

Given how extensive the abuse from BOTH her parents is, I genuinely do not think Rin NOT being cursed would’ve changed anything. These are the kind of people who WOULD have found some reason to abuse Rin. -50/10

2019 in review in review:

A few years ago I started tracking yearly goals, books read, movies watched etc in a year, along with overview blurbs, in private posts. End of 2019/beginning of 2020 I was really frazzled/burned out about a lot of stuff and just never finished up making the thing. 8 months later, got the urge to read back what I’d got done, then figured I’d maybe go ahead and see about finishing.

Drives an old-timer, and not just any old-timer but a raven black ‘69 Boss 428 Mustang. That thing was expensive as hell and really hard to find, but Nate wanted it in a good condition and takes care of that thing like his life depends on it. Sure he’ll push it to its limits, but otherwise he takes better care of that stupid car than himself. That car is his guilty pleasure, most of the time though he’s on his motorcycle - he’ll say it’s more practical, but really it’s all about the adrenaline and constantly putting himself in near death situations.

He loves street racing, the more illegal the better. Whatever project he’s currently working on for himself is probably being prepared and perfect for the next race. It’s probably going to send him to an early grave (if the myriad of other issues doesn’t do it sooner), but he can’t shake the addiction he has for the feeling of the steering wheel and the gearshift under his fingers.

Has a thing for collecting stray animals. It started when he was a kid, his mother had allowed it and taught him how to take care of them if they were wounded, and he just never grew out of it. There’s two dogs and a raven that have taken up permanent residency in his house, but there are other animals that sort of come and go as they please and come when they need food, shelter or help.

Has a tattoo that covers his back, an intricate drawing of thorns and roses and a raven mid-flight. It’s sort of a project that spanned almost a decade and he would get it done little by little, working on the drawing before taking it to the tattoo parlor. There are many, many details within it, each with its own meaning that only makes sense to Nate, an homage to people in his life and his past. Also there’s a snake tattooed on his chest that he got back in school, as well as a myriad of small tattoos scattered across his skin - his mother’s handwriting, dates of death for his fallen comrades etc.

His most noticeable scar is the burn mark on his stomach, vaguely shaped like whatever piece of metal he’d been burnt with during an interrogation, but he doesn’t mind it all that much. What he does mind are the million silvery scars from the IED that killed Liam - he hates thinking about those.

His knuckles are always beat up, to some degree. He loves fighting in various fight-clubs throughout the city, just for the sake of another hit of adrenaline, and because it makes him feel somewhat alive. So it’s not really a surprise to see him beaten and bruised, it’s more of a surprise when he’s in one piece... When he’s not doing that, he’s probably taking his frustrations out on an old, worn-out punching bag he’s had since forever, or jogging around the city at strange hours of the night.

He’s got a myriad of vices - alcohol, fighting, cigarettes, an occasional hit of drugs. It’s his attempt to fill some hole in himself that’s been left gaping open ever since his father died. It’s a temporary fix, but he’s the type of person to live his life day in and day out anyway.

He’s got an old silver zippo with engravings from the army such as “As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil for I am the evilest son of a bitch." and dates and initials of his fallen comrades. He loves that beat up piece of trash though, and you’ll never see him without it.

Prefers knives to guns, but he knows it’s stupid to bring a knife to a gunfight so he’s learned how to handle those too. Though he’s not actively involved with any side, he’s always got weapons on him - just in case. It comes with the territory of being involved with the murkier side of the population.

He loves music - it’s his outlet. You can sometimes see him jotting down notes on a napkin when he’s sitting in a diner at 4AM - it calms him to write these things down, helps get the music out of his head. When he can’t sleep, he’ll play his Stratocaster until he’s able to pass out, even if just for a few hours.

He’s all dark leather and worn military boots and silver rings and a smell of cigarettes and gasoline and trouble. That’s pretty much his MO. I feel like when someone sees him, you could show them his diploma and they wouldn’t believe you this guy’s a doc that’s worked as a corpsman for the army for years.

Probably the weirdest quirk of his, is his penchant for faith. His mother was religious, and she sort of instilled that in him at a young age. He must have lost his faith a thousand times over the years, but he always ends up coming back. No doubt in his mind God doesn’t want anything to do with his messed-up ass, but he likes this concept that there’s something out there, even if it’s not for him. Then at least for the good people in his live that he loves. It sort of brings him peace, and if he can’t be found at his usual joints around town - he’s no doubt sitting in a dark, empty church, head bowed down, seeking solace. He’s never going to admit it though, unless you catch him in the act.

His father is the only man he truly feared in his life, otherwise he’s just pretty much indifferent and is generally lacking in the self-preservation department...

Every Wednesday and Saturday, like clockwork - he goes to visit his mother. He brings her flowers, takes her out in the gardens for a walk, sits besides her and reads her a chapter or two of whatever book they’re going through that month. She’s pretty much an empty shell of a woman she used to be, but holding her hand is the only comfort he feels these days. It’s still as warm and soft as he remembers it, and though it breaks his heart to see her like this, he’ll probably never give up hope that she’ll come back one day. And even if she doesn’t she’s still his mom.

Also plants, his house is filled with those? Idk, he’s so bad at taking care of himself and is probably in a complete organ failure, but the plats and the animals - they’re thriving like he’s been studying vet medicine and botany all his life.

WANTED CONNECTIONS

The Brother - He’s one of the Reapers, and someone Nate cares about deeply, even if he’s rarely showing it. It’s a complicated relationship between these two, Nate envies him for leaving when he did, but he can never quite get rid of the feelings he has for his brother. It’s a sensation of bone-deep loyalty he can’t shake. I think it would be super interesting to explore this connection, and I’m intentionally leaving it vague so it can be discussed!

The Friend’s Wife - She’s the wife of his brother-in-arms and army best friend that died during an explosion. I think their relationship was shaky at first, considering Nate’s feelings for her husband - but Nate can see why Liam loved her so much. Nate once promised Liam that if anything ever happened to him, Nate would take care of her and the kid, and Nate’s never been one to break promises. That’s why he came back to Houston after he was honorably discharged, and why he took up odd jobs - to pay for the debts and to make sure those two had everything they needed. He’ll probably care for them until the day he dies, whether or not she likes it. He adores the kid though, revels at her innocence and the way she’s delighted at everything, she also represents the only memory he has of Liam.

The Ex-comrade - Someone Nate also considered a good friend, he’d trusted them enough to admit his darkest thoughts after Liam died. But though they promised to respect his decision not to be saved at the risk of others, they risked their life for him when it came down to that. Oddly enough, Nate resents them for it. He feels like it was a good way to go, and he should’ve been left behind when they had the chance. It’s a sick and twisted logic, but it’s hard reasoning with him. I would love to work on this dynamic, because this person has seen him at his worst, and they obviously care about him so I think it’s a good spot for growth for both of them.

The one he hates - This will sound ridiculous, but it’s someone he’s been involved with at some point in his life (leaving this flexible) They butted heads a lot, hated each other even, but I feel like they also got addicted to each other because at least it made Nate feel something, even if it was rage. They are far too similar for their own good, and they feed off each other’s troubles. It’s a bit selfish on both sides, and definitely unhealthy, but I’m super interested in exploring that because lbr Nate can’t make a good decision for the life of him. This could be either old or fresh I’m up for anything, and we can develop/discuss it further!!

The Friends - Someone please put up with him? He can be funny, sometimes. In a dark, tragic sort of way. Like someone has to be there to explain to him breakfast isn’t cereals in a bowl of vodka. I mean he’ll probably sarcasm his way out of it, but at least someone tried…

The Exes - And by exes I mean hookups, or real exes who got sick of him being a mess, or they were too much of a mess together, or someone ill-informed tried to save this jackass from himself. Anything works honestly, it can be angsty or a tragicomedy, I’m there for it all, I want to hurt him real bad.

THE STORY

He was born in Chicago, the son of a nurse and a father who played an integral part in the city’s criminal scene. From a young age he was thrust into the life his father led, nudged further into it by an older brother he’d always looked up to.

He wasn’t all his father though, even if he’d inherited his temper - as a kid he used to adore his mother, she represented this beacon of light and kindness for him that’s still there today.

Since very young age he developed this duality when it comes to his identity - he would try to satisfy the wishes of both this mother and father, which would result in the man he is today. On one side, he wanted to follow his mother’s footsteps into med school and do some good in the world, and on the other side he was drawn to the seedy underbelly of the city that his father roamed. It was like an addiction he couldn’t quite shake no matter how hard he tried.

His father would be beaten to death in front of Nate when he was just 15, and though he was used to seeing blood and death by now - this shook him to his core. Though he was messed up, Nate loved his father, and seeing him die in his arms broke something in the boy.

It wasn’t made easier by his brother taking off to go to Houston, leaving Nate scrambling back in Chicago, trying to take care of his mother who was now withering away like a plucked flower, and trying to figure out how to survive.

It was a pretty miserable existence - work low-paying jobs for the gang, go to school, take care of mom, rinse and repeat. It’s no wonder this was part of Nate’s life during which he developed his bad habits and a bitter attitude. It’s the only thing that made sense.

He had a knack for survival though - earned better gigs eventually, got into med school, got better at whatever it was that the gang required of him (car theft, hits...), but he felt like he owed it to his mother to for once put what she had dreamed of for him in the first place, instead of what his father had wanted.

He tried to clean up his act then - figured military might do it and after he had enough money to put his mom in a really good place - he enlisted. Worst decision of his life, or so he thinks anyway.

Sure, it cleaned up his life, established order within it, but he’d never be the same after it. The things they had to live through, were much, even for him.

He made friends there though, fell in love - though it was unreciprocated. It was naive though, to think that he was done with heartbreak, in the midst of war of all places. An IED struck as both Liam and Nate were shuffling, trying to figure out how to stop whatever was happening without harming a child, and before Nate could think - Liam was already shielding him with his body. Maybe it wasn’t exactly the type of love Nate had hoped for, but Liam had loved him dearly nonetheless.

They’d have to drag him away from Liam’s body after he’d been doing CPR for good 40 minutes, and it was a point at which he spun out of control once again. He would purposefully put himself in harm’s way, and had made it a point to make it clear to everyone that in case of trouble, he did not want to be saved. Not that anyone would listen to him.

He’d come out of combat very much alive. Though pretty beat up after he ran into harm’s way in an attempt to save someone, and had been dragged from the bring of death by a comrade. At the end of the day he was left with wounds, empty medals and an honorable discharge that sent him to Houston to lick his wounds.

Why Houston? His brother was there, and Liam’s wife too. Home wasn’t a city - it was people, he knew that much about life. It was far from ideal, but if Nate had anything left, then it was his honour, and he had a promise to keep.

Some weeks before Liam’s death, as if somehow he knew - Liam had asked him to go to Houston if anything ever happened to him, make sure his wife and his kid were taken care of. And it wasn’t like Nate had anything of his own left, just this promise he’d made and whatever was left of his broken family.

He’d work as a contract killer for a while - bad things were what he was good at, after all. And it paid well, well enough to help Liam’s wife pay off her debts and take care of the kid, and whatever was left Nate put to side - for what, he had no idea. Outside of that, his life pretty much spun out of control - he couldn’t stop dreaming about Liam’s limp body in his arms, or the things they had to do to survive over there. He went numb, more numb than before - and he was still desperately trying to feel something. Rage, pleasure, pain, anything but this nothingness. So it was no wonder he slipped so easily back into his old habits.

Word got around though - of a doc that had a way of taking a bullet out of you so you didn’t die, and instantly forget you were his patient to begin with. And that money he left on the side? There was enough of it to get proper tools and drugs, make his work easier, but also enough to buy place from which he could do that one thing that still brought peace to his mind - cars. Tuning, fixing, creating - you name it, and he could do it.

So for the last two years he’s been working as a backstreet doctor - though his practice is rather professionally equipped and sterile (don’t worry, he’s a nerd about that stuff), and focusing on cars as his ‘day’ (?) job. Whatever it is you wish, he can acquire it, and then make it better. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 1967 Impala or something... wilder, and newer. He’s got it covered.

What does their bedroom look like? Arvad has a few books, weapons, maps, and clothes but not much else.

Do they have any daily rituals? He patrols the ship daily and prays.

Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often? Arvad gets exercise daily, just by moving around the Weatherlight.

What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy? The kitchen is rarely busy since Arvad is the Weatherlight’s Chef and no one else save for Shanna can really cook/is willing to.

Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.) Arvad is a bit of a clean freak and gets annoyed by people leaving things around.

Eating habits and sample daily menu Blood of Cabalists but only when totally necessary.

Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time Arvad likes stargazing when he has time, but he doesn’t really enjoy wasting time. He knows he should take time to relax but it’s hard when there’s so much to do.

Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging Before he was turned, Arvad had a serious sweet tooth, so that was his number one indulgence. Other than that, he has high self-restraint due to his belief in Serra, and doesn’t like indulging needlessly.

Neuroses? Do they recognize them as such? Anxiety and depression onset by his vampirism, and yes

Intellectual pursuits? Arvad enjoys reading and stargazing.

Favorite book genre? Adventure and horror.

Biggest and smallest short term goal? tbh I don’t really know, most of his goals are long term.

Biggest and smallest long term goal? Biggest - curing his vampirism and ridding Dominaria of the Cabal. Though he won’t admit it, getting revenge on Kazarov is up there too. Smallest - saving up enough money to buy new sand and oil to clean his armor.

Preferred mode of dress and rituals surrounding dress Typically wears commoner clothes when not in his armor, but is usually seen in his armor. He doesn’t really have any rituals.

Favorite beverage? Before he was turned, Arvad enjoyed a good beer every once in awhile.

What do they think about before falling asleep at night? Arvad doesn’t sleep but he often muses on his life and goals.

Childhood illnesses? Any interesting stories behind them? Arvad got chickenpox as a boy and ended up giving it to his siblings.

Turn-ons? Turn-offs? He likes a partner who’s smaller than him, because it feels like he can protect them, and he likes someone who’s soft-spoken. Being rude is an instant turn off.

Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen? He’d probably doodle something on the paper, but he’s not an artist, so it’d be simple doodles.

How organized are they? How does this organization/disorganization manifest in their everyday life? Arvad is highly organized and spends his free time organizing the Weatherlight’s libary and spice cabinet.

Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all? Arvad loves reading and stargazing, as I said before, and he’s tried making maps of the constellations a few times.

How do they see themselves 5 years from today? On the Weatherlight, fighting the Cabal.

Do they have any plans for the future? Any contingency plans if things don’t workout? He hopes to stay on the Weatherlight but he’s afraid that one day, the Powerstone will be taken away and he’ll have to go back to only being able to move during the day.

What is their biggest regret? Being turned.

Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy? Arvad sees the crew as his best friends, and the Cabal/Kazarov as his enemies.

Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (eg The house is on fire! What do they do?) Arvad would try to be calm and get the help he needed, but he might get snappy with others.

Reaction to sudden intrapersonal disaster (eg close family member suddenly dies) Arvad is very reserved, so he would hide all his emotions from others and try to deal with it himself.

Most prized possession? A copy of the Song of All that his mother gave him for his ninth birthday.

Thoughts on material possessions in general? He doesn’t really care for material possessions but they are nice to have.

Concept of home and family? Due to his dedication to knighthood, Arvad hasn’t ever really thought about family. He thinks it would be nice to have one thought.

Thoughts on privacy? (Are they a private person, or are they prone to ‘TMI’?) Arvad is very private and doesn’t like expressing himself all that often. He keeps to himself.

What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time? Painting, but he figures he has more important duties and can’t waste time on art.

What makes them feel guilty? Whenever he loses control and ends up drinking a Cabalist’s blood. Even if they’re evil, he still feels an immense surge of guilt.

Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making? Analytical but he also considers his, and other’s, emotions.

Would they consider themselves a Type A or Type B personality? Type A.

What recharges them when they’re feeling drained? Being alone and watching the stars.

Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither? Inferiority. He really doesn’t think he’s worthy of much.

How misanthropic are they? Arvad sees the good in almost anyone so he’s not very misanthropic.

Hobbies? Reading, stargazing, and he used to enjoy painting.

How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education? Arvad didn’t get very far in formal education because he went to become a knight. He thinks that any education is good (as long as it isn’t the Cabal, but that’s a given.)

Religion? Strict Serran

Superstitions or views on the occult? They’re part of the world, so he believes in them.

Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds? Deeds. He’s not good with words.

If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal? me Someone is compassionate and understanding to his condition.

How do they express love? Through actions, like doing chores or picking up something for them that reminded him of them.

If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like? Arvad tends to just throw punches and not care what happens as long as he wins.

Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not? He’s already died once, so it’s less of a fear of himself dying and more of everyone he loves dying before he does.

There is a lot here, I’m apparently feeling very chatty tonight so sorry about some of the long ramble-y answers again:

1: Talk about the first time you watched your favorite movie.

Itwas 2005, and 15 year old me had dragged my dad and brother to thecinema to see a movie that looked really interesting to me – itfeatured several badass women in the main cast at a time when Iwasn’t seeing much with actually strong, well written femalecharacters in. So I had to see this, and it was sci-fi which my wholefamily enjoys, so off we went to watch it. At the beginning, therewas a filmed intro of Joss Whedon talking about the movie and aboutthe TV series it came from, which I knew nothing about and thatworried me. But then the film started and I swear my heart stoppedfor a moment, I fell so deeply in love with the setting, thecharacters, the cast. The film was Serenity, and it started a lot forme

2: Talk about your first kiss.

Myfirst kiss wasn’t special like I wish it had been. I was about 14and it was with my best friend at the time, a guy who I had nofeelings towards whatsoever. I regret the kiss a lot, and the kissesthat followed. I wish I hadn’t felt pressured in to it the way Idid.

3: Talk about the person you’ve had the most intense romantic feelings for.

Idon’t really get intense feelings for people that often, especiallynot now I’m older. There was a guy when I was in secondary schoolthough, who I genuinely thought I loved (I didn’t). It was veryunrequited and took over my life for too long, and was a catalyst tothe depression I later suffered with.

4: Talk about the thing you regret most so far.

Partof me regrets going to uni, but then I think about all theexperiences I had at uni and I would never have had those, or madethose friends, or enjoyed myself that much anywhere else. I can’tthink of much that I really really regret, I tend to think thingsthrough a lot before I do them.

5: Talk about the best birthday you’ve had.

Iam the queen of good birthdays, istg! I ALWAYS go on holiday for mybirthday, have ever since I was young, so I have so many good ones.But I think it has to be between going to New York for my 21stor Berlin for my 23rd (my favourite place in the wholeworld), or this past birthday which I spent on my own in New Zealandand got to go to Hobbiton for the first time!

6: Talk about the worst birthday you’ve had.

Ihave genuinely not had a bad birthday yet. This year would’ve beensad if I hadn’t gone to Hobbiton, as I was completely on my own forthe first birthday ever.

7: Talk about your biggest insecurity.

I’ma total mess of insecurities tbh. I wouldn’t know where to start.

8: Talk about the thing you are most proud of.

In2012, when I left uni and moved to London on my own, I started a blogcalled The Theatre Tourist where I wrote about two of my biggestpassions; theatre and travel. A year after I started it, I got myfirst invite to review a theatre production which I accepted havingnever written a review. Once I wrote it, I knew this was what Iwanted to be doing, I fell completely in love with it. And to thisday I still run that blog, I have a fair few readers and connectionswith theatre PR’S all around the world. Currently I’m writing atleast a review a month for New Zealand theatre but when I was back inLondon I was being invited to at least 4 a week every week. I am soproud of that blog.

9: Talk about little things on your body that you like the most.

Mytattoos. They make me feel better about myself because I find thembeautiful and they mean a lot to me.

10: Talk about the biggest fight you’ve ever had.

Thatbest friend I mentioned earlier. He accused me of all sorts andcaused so much stupid drama in my life. We had a massive argument inthe hallway at school once, I ended up in tears in the bathroom andwe stopped talking to each other. He was a massive fucking jerk andI’m glad he’s not in my life any more.

11: Talk about the best dream you’ve ever had.

Ihad a lot of great dreams just before I moved to New Zealand, aboutwhat a great time I was going to have out here, and they havedefinitely come true

12: Talk about the worst dream you’ve ever had.

Istress dream quite a lot, the most recent one was losing my family ina natural disaster and it was awful.

13: Talk about the first time you had sex/how you imagine your first time.

Iwaited quite a while, so I was 18 when I lost it. It wasn’t perfectbut it was nice and with someone I liked at the time. It was, however, in a single bed which was AWFUL god. But other than that, there’s not much to talk about.

14: Talk about a vacation.

Whichone to choose though??? I love travelling and have been so lucky totravel a lot, I studied tourism and it’s always been a huge part ofmy life. That’s why I’m out here on this beautiful island in themiddle of nowhere right now.

15: Talk about the time you were most content in life.

Idon’t feel content a lot, but my first and subsequent 6 visits toBerlin have been the best I’ve ever felt in my whole life. Berlinis the one place I feel completely at home and know I belong.

16: Talk about the best party you’ve ever been to.

Idon’t go to a lot of parties! And the ones I went to when I wasyounger, I don’t remember a lot of them… I went to a really funfoam party in my first year of uni that I always remember fondly iffuzzily.

Whichone is elementary? Primary I think? Jesus, who remembers primaryschool? I don’t think much exciting happened when I was that young!

19: Talk about something that happened in middle school.

Waitwhat’s middle school if the next question is high school? Do theyhave a school between primary and secondary in America? I’mCONFUSED

20: Talk about something that happened in high school.

Ohall sorts of shit.

21: Talk about a time you had to turn someone down.

Therewas this guy in college who I became pretty close friends with thenlater told me he really liked me. He was sweet but so not my type soI just said no and then he never spoke to me again lol

Interms of an actual phobia, I’m really afraid of dogs. Which ispretty inconvenient, they make me panic.

23: Talk about a time someone turned you down.

Ugh,I got drunk at a work party and asked out a guy from IT I had beeneyeing up and he turned me down which is fair enough I was a messback then. But then I had to see him at work all the time and it wasso embarrassing for me.

24: Talk about something someone told you that meant a lot.

Justrecently I’ve been having a crisis about what I’m going to dowith my life once I get back to the UK next year, I want to get a jobI actually love as opposed to ending up in a shitty call centre jobhating my life again. But the other day my manager told me that shegenuinely believes I can do absolutely anything and be brilliant atit, and that just boosted my confidence so much.

26: Talk about things you do when you’re sick.

Iusually try and just get on with things and don’t admit I’m sickunless it’s really bad. I hate sitting still, I need to be doingsomething all the time even when ill.

31: Talk about what you think death is like.

Scary?Death scares me, I can’t lie. I try not to think about it.

32: Talk about a place you remember from your childhood.

TheatreRoyal Bath, I associate so many good memories with this building.When I was a kid and first expressed an interest in Shakespeare mymum used to sometimes take me to see plays there. I started a massivething in me and it’s always a place that makes me feel happy.

33: Talk about what you do when you are sad.

Iput on music. Loud. Usually Bowie, because I know he will make mefeel better, he always does.

34: Talk about the worst physical pain you’ve endured.

Ireally hope this doesn’t tempt fate, but as of yet I’ve onlyexperienced self inflicted pain. Never broken a bone or sprainedanything. Uhm so probably my first tattoo but even then that was a good pain for the most part.

35: Talk about things you wish you could stop doing.

Beinganxious. Seriously, if I could control my anxiety or make itdissapear things would be so different.

38: Talk about songs that remind you of certain people.

Meand my dad share a fairly similar musical taste, and he was the onewho introduced me to all the musicians I love so deeply now.Specifically listening to Delilah by The Sensational Alex Harvey Bandmakes me think of him. With my mum, we both love Alice Cooper so anytime I hear him I think of her.

39: Talk about things you wish you’d known earlier.

Iwish I’d known earlier that there’s no shame in ‘sleeping around’.I felt ashamed for a long time about my sexual habits, and got shamedfor them. I know now that it’s all bullshit and me being in controlof my sexuality is a good thing.

Ialso wish someone had told me that you’re allowed to have stops andstarts in your career, for years after uni I tried so hard to followa career path that wasn’t working for me but I thought I would be afailure if I gave up, or if I ended up doing something that didn’trelate to my degree. Even though I still struggle with the idea of acareer, I at least do know now that I am allowed to do whatever thehell I want whether I studied for it or not.

40: Talk about the end of something in your life.

In 2016 the West Endmusical Sunny Afternoon closed. By the time it closed I had seen it150 times, literally seeing it at the very least once a week for twowhole years. It changed me a lot – I became more confident, I madea group of the best friends I’ve ever had, I started a fan groupfor it and worked with the marketing team for the show on a socialmedia campaign. It was a HUGE part of my life. When the show closedit felt like the end of an era, I really didn’t know what I wasgoing to do without it. It meant so much to me. But now I have allthese great friends who still talk and hang out and I have two castsof actors whose careers I’ll be following for the rest of my life.

KFC DOUBLE DOWN

You don’t know how long I’ve waited. You don’t know how long the orange chicken cloud has loomed. Have I lusted after it? For a time I did. I first saw it on the menu in KFC in New York six years ago. I *regrettably* passed up my first sighting opting for something “normal” and then chased the memory at every American KFC thereafter – no sign of it. Had I dreamt it? Was it a prototype? Manager’s special? Oh to have kissed your chicken lips. Darling, I’ll wait for you. Fast-forward six years and the Double Down finally pokes its arse out in the UK. KFC piped it onto the domestic stage for the first time last year. After all those years I didn’t so much lust after it as limp away. It Follows. How did it find me? How do I pass on the curse? The cloud cascades its orange glow. Pulsing. Our eventual face-to-face felt so inevitable that all joy was lacking. Vigour? A vial at best. I mostly couldn’t face it because there’s no KFC within walking distance of my commute and tbh I didn’t fancy “sitting in” and doing it in public. This is a curtains closed scenario and would involve getting a bus specifically to go to KFC, putting it in my backpack and returning home to unwrap. Effort much? Gains little. As such the debut appearance of the Double Down in the UK passed me by.

Recently the Double Down returned for a six week run. She’s baaaaack! “Oh, boy” I groaned. Thought I’d got away with it but no – there’s that cloud again, parked outside my window. Right, this time reluctantly it is obviously happening. Eat your fears. It would have to take something special mind. Like Deliveroo suddenly (after 2+ years) declaring itself operational in my suburb? Something exactly like that! And I couldn’t come into this transaction of sound mind nor body – oh no - I would have to be on the ropes, in the sneeping clutches of a hangover entrenched in sofa. And thus I made it so. The scene was set. I ordered it, like Jesus, on the last day of the promotional offer. The prices on my KFC Deliveroo menu seemed somewhat plumped. Talking £7+ for a regular Double Down meal. Is that cricket? Probably not. Might as well opt for an £8+ Double Down “box meal” with a piece of chicken then. Here lies the jip. KFC state that their fries don’t travel well (they don’t start well either, honey. Worst. Fries. Ever.) and so they do NOT include them as a given in your meal situation – you have to exchange one of your virtual “side” tokens to unlock them from the Crystal Maze. Da fuck. That means with my box meal I had to cash in one of my two side coins on fries (the other on gravy, natch) and reader, that felt like throwing coleslaw out of the pram. You think you’d pay less for that deduction but I paid more for the privilege…doiiii! I wanted fries, gravy AND coleslaw! Wah! But was I about to pay £1.19 more for the coleslaw that should have graced my palm as part of the traditional two-side promise? No, I was not. There wasn’t an option to large my meal either, hmm, curious. So that’s a regular box meal, £8 something. No fries, fair amount of bollocks. But needs musto and I have no gusto. When the meal arrives it isn’t with a trad KFC cup of coke…it’s with a can of Pepsi. A smeddly can of Pepsi. I think they even put a +18p surcharge on choosing Pepsi as an option (no Coke option before you ask and believe me…I know). Where the FCK do they get off? My house evidently. Oh well, so far so absolutely rinsing me at every possible juncture. Well, at least I can hang my hat on the nailed-on certainty that the Double Down will look nothing like it does on the bus adverts. This is going to be shit. This is going to be two shits in a bag that have slid apart and there will be cheese everywhere and it will be small and I’ll have to fish it out like a mug and I’ll hold it up and look at it and said “£8”.

My sights were set so low that the travel-ravaged presentation of the Double Down was actually a distance better than what I was expecting. I was able to de-bag it and perform constructive surgery, the cheese that was left in the bag however was generous and a mite jarring. “That’s a lot of cheese”, I said to myself on my own in my flat in my head. I just picked it up, groomed it, placed it down and looked at it. That’s it. That’s the cloud that’s been looming this past six years. And I’m about to eat it.

I should point out for those unfamiliar with what the Double Down actually is. It’s a chicken burger with chicken burgers in place of the bread. So two chicken fillets with cheese, bacon and barbecue sauce between them. Some say KFC are marketing less as more and wow, buy our new burger – there isn’t any bread. That’s kind of not true though because there are two burgers and you only usually get one. You do get less bread (aka none) but you do get more burger (100% more). I get it though – they’re doing something. These are the notes that I made on my phone after eating it. “I wanted to go at it with a knife and fork. The top to tail. Weird.” I’ll start off with it doesn’t make sense. It just feels like two burgers on top of each other – which it entirely is. Imagine eating two hot dogs on top of each other without any bun. Hmm, you’re right – that would be pretty cool. Ok, imagine a mattress on a mattress with a duvet in the middle. That’s just making me think of a ham sandwich. Ok, imagine a chicken fillet burger on top of a chicken fillet burger. That’s what it’s like! I felt like the pieces of chicken were facing the wrong way – they were top to tail. Like the note above said. The fat end smooshed against the thin end. Should have been fat end against fat end. Feel like…not explaining good. You know how you get a two slices of bread and you face them the right way up so you have a sandwich with mirrored bread ends? Fat ends? Bread ends? You know what I mean. It makes you feel like David Hasselhoff eating THAT cheeseburger. If you’re not on the floor then you should be. I felt somewhat like a wreck and it really enhanced that low. It’s like a bear walking into a restaurant kitchen, bopping the chef out of the way and pawing two burgers together into its stupid bear mouth. It felt stupid and unnatural eating it. Just putting hands on it. The sensation was like eating two chicken fillets upon each other. It felt messy and unrefined. It was heavy going too, it felt solid and a chore. The bacon “filling” was meagre and undetectable. The cheese was the grout that bound. It stayed together in the piece but after a while I just felt weird eating it with hands and took to it with cutlery. It wasn’t wholly unenjoyable. In fact, I’d said it was quite enjoyable taste-wise but the ritual was more strange and uncomfortable. I really like KFC chicken for my sins so the gift of two generous fillets – despite their formation – was something that I almost didn’t want to end. When it was over I was essentially glad it was and having eaten that orange cloud, it is something that I would not order again. However… Said box meal was advertised as coming with a single piece of original KFC chicken. In reality the box held two unwarranted hot wings and NO piece of original KFC chicken. After I eated it I got back on my couch (am I painting too true a scene?) and messaged Deliveroo. The advertised meal I ordered with the intended one-piece sidecar had a higher cost value than the IRL delivery with two wings of lesser value (menu price 99p). In truth, I wasn’t arsed. I didn’t need that piece but thought I’d give it a punt as other factions of the experience had fallen short with the great fries side swindle and can of Pepsi shocker. I’m not a complainer. I’ve eaten a skip of disappointing takeaway fodder and I’ve never been tempted to write a snide user review. But today I thought I’d give it a bash.

WHAT! I’m not even hungry and it’s coming again. The orange cloud is back! Risen like a phoenix! I thought I’d deflated it. It lives inside of me now, no? No! It’s coming again! Well, this is unexpected. Take two.

The same Deliveroo driver delivers me my second meal. This is roughly an hour later at this point. I knew it was the same guy because I was following him on the app. The cloud catcher. Would he say anything to me? Don’t know what like. Fat bastard? Cheeky bastard? Just “bastard”? What would I say? Just laugh? Shout up to the kids “don’t worry it’s here”? Go down to answer the door in a disguise? If only there was someone here who wasn’t me…to answer the door, to share the wealth. All that crossed my mind but to be honest I was on orange cloud 9. I wasn’t that bothered at all. I didn’t say anything, just hello and thanks. No letting on, no explanation, just DING DING ROUND TWO FIGHT. It was funny second time around because the single piece of original KFC chicken was so small that it might as well have been a wing. I reckon they picked that one out especially for me. I slowly went at it. I was relishing the second can of Pepsi because I was parched. I should note that I had no plans of leaving the house this day and the cupboard was bare so this second meal was something of a long-term blessing. Just pick at it I thought and leave the Double Down in the bag until later on and we’ll see how it weathers. You knew it would fade fast. I’ll just have a bit of it now and save the rest until later. Tasted not unlike the first time. I wouldn’t say either was a standout. The presentation was much the same – not irreparable Tokyo Drift, colossal cheese slick. At one point, after eating the one piece and the fries and having nibbled at the Double Down pt.2 I thought that’s me for now. I’ll just set myself down on the sofa and come back to it in a few hours…which I did for a few minutes and then thought, nah I’ll just eat it all now and be full all day and then go to bed. Which I did.

I will say that the Double Down has cool graphics. Look at that logo. Black and red reaaaaal nice. Would wear on t-shirt inside house. The next day, after the original Double Down was retracted from the UK menus KFC introduced the Zinger Double Down. THE NEXT DAY. Orange spicy cloud. Rare Pokemon.

Despite my doubling down on the Double Down the day previous, it half danced across my mind to just order the Zinger Double Down but that was the cloud inside me talking. I’ve since passed the cloud and have no desire to Double Down. The Zinger Double Down limited appearance ended – without my intervention - on 12th August 2018.

PHYSICAL PRESENCE AND GESTURE.

1. How do they move and carry themselves? Pace, rhythm, gestures, energy? - probably slow & deliberate

2. How much physical space do they use, active and at rest? - probably not much either way. She’s a sneaky gal & taking up as little space as possible is an ingrained habit by now

3. How do they position themselves in a group? Do they like to be the center of attention, or do they hang back at the edges of a crowd? - she doesn’t rly like talking anyway, so she doens’t rly bother trying to be the center of attention. She just hangs back & listens if she has to

4. What is their size and build? How does it influence how they use their body, if it does? - im not sure if synths have like. A certain size they’re built for cause im 90% sure they don’t grow, but i like to think she’s p small & uses it to sneak around doing her job and/or hiding from other coursers if she defects

5. How do they dress? What styles, colors, accessories, and other possessions do they favor? Why? - before she defects, just the normal courser uniform cause i think all coursers have to lmao. If she defects & gets her memories changed she’ll probably have the hooded rags outfit

Alright, soo, in senior year of high school, I signed up for an elective science class right? It was fuckin’ forensic science, so yeah, I know a few CSI techniques, like, you ask me to dust somewhere for prints, I’ma fuck it up, but I know how it works. But that year, the higher-level science classes had to do a fuckin presentation to the sophomores and shit, to encourage them to sign up for science classes even after they’d fulfilled their graduation reqs for science.

Anyways, one of the courses the presentation would involve was Forensic Science. I signed up to be in the presentation group so I could ditch classes the whole day, and it was pretty hype.

So, there were a bunch of science kids backstage, preparing little experiments and showcases to show to the audience; like, the chemistry kids had a small smokescreen, the AP Physics kids had something involving wind socks? And the fuckin Marine Bio kids had a fucking skull from a shark. I shit you not.

And then there was us. Forensic fucking Science. So, our teacher, Ms. P., she was in charge of hosting the damn show. So, I guess she was so caught up in the planning for it that she forgot to suggest a showcasing for us. So when the presentation team for Forensic Science, by far the largest group of six, compared to the other’s average of two or four, talked to our teacher to ask what we should say and/or do, she replied “I don’t know, improvise?”

So we improvise. Our routine got better throughout the day, but it would normally start like this: I say in my best creepy tone of voice “Hello everybody, we’re here to talk to you about murder,” and briefly go over what the rest of the people in my team would do, then they talk about the technical aspects and the activities, a little bit of what we learn, one guy makes a reference to pop culture, and then we finish it off with a shitty pun. Then we’d go backstage again and wait until the last presentation, Marine Bio, finished up their part, and go back onstage to answer any questions the audience might have about the classes.

Now, we didn’t really have much visual aid, compared to the other sciences. The AP Chem kids wowed people with their home made smokescreen, the Physics kids did some kind of breathplay shit, and the Marine Bio guy let the audience pass the shark head around so they could get a better look at it.

The most riveting thing my group had was, apparently, me. Like, really. Standing next to the other forensic science kids, I was basically Abby from NCIS, meaning I stood the fuck out my dyed hair and actual Forensic Science class shirt I wore just for the occasion, and I behaved in the most weird/interesting manner I could manage. So naturally when we go back up on stage for the Q&A session, the one person who had questions about Forensic Science, directed his questions towards me. Now, that shouldn’t be a problem for someone who knew shit about the class.

The thing is, it was fuckin me. I didn’t know JACK SHIT. So I had to fuckin improvise.

“What kind of cases do you get in Forensic Science?”

Fuck. Shit. We haven’t done any mock crime scenes yet. Fuck.

“Well, we uh... We get a huge variety of cases, scenarios, situations and the like, Ms.P. changes it up all the time. ...Uh, you feel me?”

Then someone else stepped in to save my dumb ass, and I hung my head and moped back to the group. Everyone finished up asking their questions, and we had to remain on stage while the audience filed out to leave.

But then, the Marine Bio guy dashed up to the mic podium and worriedly said, “Yo wait, guys, where’s the shark head?”

He never got the shark head back.

So the Marine Bio guy’s freaking out, he jumps off the stage to look for the shark head, and the Ms. P. turns to me and says, in the most serious tone of voice, the funniest thing anyone hasever said to me:

“Find the head.”

And after a few objections, I left to lead the Forensic Science team to find the head.

Since I’m a shitty leader, they didn’t listen to me, so I tried to profile the crowd on my own.

So after several disastrous attempts at finding the shark head, a guy from the Forensic Science team, Don, says “Guys, I found the head.”

Turns out one of the guy’s friends was the last one to hold the head, so he just snuck backstage and left it on the Marine Bio guy’s bag.

Books — His book, of course, you should read it. Also reads a lot of plays/scripts. Magazines — Any magazine that mentions him. Foods — He’s a vegan! So, vegan food. Loves a good tofu. Has to eat well to keep his svelte figure. Drinks — Tall, half-caff, soy latte at 120 degrees. (I have absolutely no idea what this means but I googled “complicated starbucks orders” and this is what came up.) Also, likes tea. The like one piece of British culture he retained. Animals — Jack is very fond of strange animals–like okapis or the maned wolf. Animals that are just truly bizarre looking. Bonus points if they are obnoxiously large like giraffes. Sports — Played football in secondary. Wasn’t that bad. Social Issues — Magick Rights! Also, considers himself a feminist. (He’s not a terrible ally...but he’s also not perfect by any means.) Favorite Saying — “Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” ~ Meryl Streep Color — Jack is a big fan of black and white–a solid, classic combination that you can’t go wrong with. That’s not to say he doesn’t love color, because he ABSOLUTELY does. It is just that black and white is his favorite combination. Clothing — Loves to dress brightly and fashionably! Home — A large, eccentric mansion on top of a hill. I like to think that it is across from Cruella’s house. It is, of course, called the Skellington Mansion. Household furnishings — An eclectic combination of modern with like the skeleton of a Victorian mansion, so like really ornate, heavy curtains--but a white leather sofa. Favorite Possession — His Emmys. Most Cherished Possession — Is this not the same thing - Jack Neighborhood — The Woods Married Before — Twice! Once to a sorceress-actress, once to a fairy-model. Significant Other Before — Lots of girlfriends probably (all Magicks). Children — Hecuba Hellsplat and Luna Bristlecape Relationship with Family — Estranged for the most part. He barely, if ever, speaks to his ex-wives. Talks with Hecuba very rarely. Has the best relationship with Luna. She’s his bb girl. Car — Some speedster probably, a nice fancy, flashy car. Career — Actor. Dream Career — Actor. Dream Life — He had his dream life. Cry. Love Life — More or less nonexistent. Talents or Skills — Excellent at memorization. A good parrot (can mimic mannerisms/speech patterns really well.) Can play the jazz piano! Intelligence Level — Quite high on certain things, absolutely clueless on others. There is not a lot of in between, really. Finances — Still wealthy af, he has like a successful 40 year career to live off of for the foreseeable future.
