6) I’m thinking about make a scene where Cass uses her history nerd skills for on of the challenges for TCOTC and Andrew just falls in love with her and says “I’ve never been so in love with you.” And Cass replies “We don’t have time for your nerd fetish Bone Head we gotta GO!”

Does it ever feel weird knowing a niche population of people grew up with your games? I hope this is okay to send, I know you mentioned gay awakenings. For me it was more "gay normalization". Like "Of course I can go for girls in a dating sim, why wouldn't I play every route?" to "Of course I can be gay, why wouldn't I like girls?" so thank you. And it was similar with TCOTC, wrt gender. As an adult I can appreciate your writing so much more (it still holds up!), but even as a kid it wasn't totally lost on me, it really mattered. Thank you again! I feel like I should also say I still follow your work. I really loved MD:WH + Cute Bites!

On the one hand it's really great to think that I might have been a helpful or positive influence for someone, or offered them the options that I couldn't find when I was young. I think that's one of the things we often want as creators, to reach out to our past selves a little bit. I worry sometimes about the ways in which I might be a bad influence - like, I know a few players have been really upset by certain things that happen in some games, and making anyone have a breakdown and cry for hours was obviously not my intent - but I try not to fixate too much on it or I'll drive myself crazy trying to put soft corners on everything I write. But I do want to offer up possibilities and other viewpoints to people, and it's cool to think that I might have pointed someone down a path that worked out well for them.

On the other hand it is always, always weird to hear someone say that they played my games "as a kid". I've never had children, which I think is a big springboard for a lot of people in changing how they think of themselves in terms of adultness. My lifestyle hasn't changed much since my twenties. I still stay up all night, I'm still a huge nerd into books and video games and RPGs, I still mostly dress in nerdy t-shirts, and I still feel like a baby indie just starting out, having to scrape together a budget for every project with wishes and dreams, never quite knowing if it's all going to work. Even though I've been a full-time indie for a long, long time... that time kind of blurs together! (And not having a regular job also cuts me off from contact with mainstream adult expectations, not to mention schedules. I really do float off in my own little world.) So there's always that disorienting moment of "Wait, how old am I? How long ago was that?" if someone mentions growing up with my work. Surely not! Surely we're all around the same age!

They can die, however, whether it be to sickness or injury -Humans have a system of Queens instead of Kings like other societies -Demons have no concept of gender, as they do not have biological gender nor psychological gender -Male angels, like male birds, usually have harems instead of a single partner, and it’s considered “obsessive” and “weird” to try and have a sole dedicated relationship -The most horrific punishment you can give an angel is clipping their wings -Many demon’s tails are venomous, but not all of them -There’s a black market in one of the most shady human towns that imprisons magical creatures and sells them or their corpses

As I mentioned on the survey post, I was already leaning towards having Finifugal as the oneshot I would post between TDSOTI and ATTTS, so I’m really happy to see it in second place! Thus, The Heart’s Variable will be the oneshot that I post between ATTTS and AOFS, which is great because I still need to plot/draft the end of it. Then, after AOFS is posted, I’ll start writing and posting Red and the Wolf and The Cottage on the Cliff!

Here are the premises for our two winning oneshots:

When ___’s life begins to crumble around her, she decides to stand up for herself and set things straight. In the aftermath, her mother insists that she books a trip to Kim’s Bed & Breakfast for a fortnight of relaxation in the secluded countryside. Away from all of her problems and the people that are causing them.

Little does she expect to never want to leave the enchanting house and its wondrous garden, for more reasons than simply that. But this is precisely what brings up problem number one...

That other reason is already married.

One caffeine-fueled and yeah, definitely illegal hacking expedition at four in the morning to conquer university piraters. One half-naked live-streamer enacting a striptease through a high-quality webcam. One photography unit that bestows the epitome of Hell in the form of a paired group assignment upon two unsuspecting students. Zero excuses for not making the deadline.

Alternatively: Kim Taehyung fucks with plenty of binary codes. But he cannot, for the life of him, figure out how to crack his soft-spoken assignment partner who has hands that caress the camera equipment like a pro.

Books read in January - March 2022

Self-Care by Leigh Stein 

This was a satire on those pro-women safe space online companies that are all about capitalism but pretend to be about nurturing women. It’s about two friends, one a wealthy trust fund baby with an eating disorder, the other a self-hating woman from a working class family who are invested in the start up and how their company is rocked by a sexual assault scandal. 

A quick and easy read. I would have liked a little more meat on the metaphorical bones but this flowed really easily. 

The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton

I can’t begin to say how much I loved this. I have never really been able to get that into Wharton but I had someone talk about how much they loved her and I heard that Sofia Coppola was turning her novel into a miniseries so I thought what the hell, I’ll give her another chance. I’m so glad I did. 

TCotC is very much in the vein of Vanity Fair, Gone With the Wind, Forever Amber, Angel and hell, even Valley of the Dolls. It deals with an ambitious, beautiful and emotionally cold bad girl who marries early and often trampling people to get everything her heart desires. SO MUCH FUN. 

Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett

So a few years ago I read this Twitter thread of people talking about how Autobiography of a Face was the most amazing memoir they had ever read. I read it and found it unimpressive. But one thing that interested me that I discovered afterwards was that Ann Patchett, whom I had read before, was best friends with AoaF writer Lucy Grealy and had written this memoir of their friendship after Grealy died. 

This is a memoir of their friendship, not of Patchett herself so Grealy is really the focus and the heroine of the story. It was written in the direct wake of Grealy’s death so in some aspects it sort of is almost like hagiography. Lucy is always described as the best, the most clever, the wildest (also this bts look at Grealy’s life made me feel justified with my criticism of AoaF. It initially started out as an essay Grealy struggled to expand and she rushed the ending which it definitely feels like when you’re reading it). On the other hand Patchett is also open about Grealy’s drug addiction, her clausterphobic neediness in relationships, her tempermental and sometimes cruel nature. It makes her seem more like a person which I think is the greatest kindness of all. I read some reviews of this book by people who love AoaF and hate this book believing that Patchett describes herself as a saint in the book but to me Patchett is constantly downplaying herself and in doing so almost comes across as parasite even though she was incredibly talented in her own right. 

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett

So after reading Truth & Beauty I read this essay Patchett wrote about how she became very close friends with Tom Hanks’ P.A. and nursed her through cancer treatment. This was during the period she was promoting The Dutch House and I decided since I was reading so much Patchett anyway to give this one a shot too. I LOVED IT. 

Now don’t get me wrong, the final third is a disappointment, but the 2/3 of the book before that are electric and riveting. The book is about a young boy who grows up in a beautiful mansion with his brilliant older sister and how after their father’s death they are left adrift in the world. I think most of all this is a love letter to older sisters and as someone with an older sister I think it perfectly captures how magical and invincible they seem, almost like a third parent. Great work.

IMDB Trivia for “Tooms”

- Walter Skinner's debut appearance. 

- First time the CSM has any on-screen lines. 

- For his final scenes, Doug Hutchison performed nude. As scripted, Tooms was supposed to emerge from his "cocoon" wearing his animal control uniform, but Hutchison thought that made no sense. 

- The bile-like substance coating Tooms and his nest was actually yellow piping gel, which stuck to the cast members' skin and pulled out hair upon removal. 

- The first time that the Cigarette Smoking Man actually speaks. He only has three words though: "Course I do". 

- First appearance in the series of Mitch Pileggi playing Assistant Director Walter Skinner. 

- Squeeze, the first part of Tooms, was so amazing that Douch Huchinson wrote a script himself and presented it to Chris Carter. Jim Wong and Glen Morgan, the original writers, did it instead. 

- In this episode, Scully calls Mulder "Fox" for the last time in the famous conversation of the car. She won't do it again until Home Again, 22 years later.

- Among other things, this episode is famous because of the conversation of the car, aka TCotC, as far as the fans clearly read the subtext in it as Scully telling Mulder that she loved him. Because of this, ice tea is synonymous of love in the fandom.  

- The last scene in which Mulder says that he feels something is about to change is a spooky forecasting of the things that will come soon.
