I have finally thought of something! Maybe. I don't know, it just occurred to me. So my idea is that the reader is human and considering how the fae like and enjoy belittling and degrading humans - Cardan included - it could reach a point where reader feels as though she can't do anything correctly. So she just kind of curls into herself and she just feels completely hopeless with everyday life. If it's set before Cardan is king and they're all still in school, then it could be a massive declining in her grades and when she has to eat lunch she just doesn't in fear of being judged for it. I guess Cardan will take advantage of that and make her completely dependant on him. So basically, he's the asshole for making her feel like that in the first place but then he "redeems" himself by claiming he'll look out for her and essentially just takes the reigns on her entire life. Hope you're alright!

THE WORLD IS OURS

It was no secret that you were intelligent. More than that. You could be considered a genius by faerie standards, never mind mortal ones. 

But it was no secret that your special quality had left you a long time ago, much like the light in your eyes and the love you held for yourself and the world. Everything had become so bleak with the vile words that dripped from his tongue so easily, every sentence branding itself into your head disturbingly.

At night it was all you could think of. And then, you realized, that he was right. Cardan was right, the disgusting boy who could never seem to leave you alone no matter how much you showed him that you were not worth his time. He only fought harder when he heard that.

You saw him less and less now that you had stopped trying. You hid somewhere in the back when you were in school; you no longer ate with the rest of your peers, instead moving somewhere else to mull over your failure. The death of all things good about you.

Every thought turned sour. Every day became rotten.

And it was all your fault.

It was no secret that you were his.

He had made it abundantly clear from the beginning. You did not respond well to it, turning him away with the smug look that always sat on your face, the righteousness that always hung around you like a cloak. It was addicting.

You were addicting.

You were lovely and smart and beautiful and you knew it, too. But the air of superiority that he wanted to crack, just slightly to worm his way into your heart, had shattered. His weak, weak human. So fragile, like a flower plucked from the ground.

You no longer ate with them. You no longer studied with them. You no longer smiled or laughed or even cried. He pushed you to your limit–even farther, for you had broken long before. It hurt him more than you would know.

Only when he saw how hollow your cheeks had grown, how dull your eyes had gotten had he realized what he had done, the transgressions he had so carelessly committed. He slammed his door when he had gotten into the castle. He had snapped pens over papers in which he had started letters to you, papers which he had just written your name hundreds upon hundreds of times.

“My sweet angel,” he whispered, tracing the familiar letters of your name over again with his finger, blackened with ink. “I will not allow you to languish. I will atone for my sins just as you have for yours. I swear.”

You did not expect to see Cardan Greenbriar sitting on your picnic blanket with a basket, free of his usual posse, but not free of a scowl. 

It was not a welcome sight.

“What are you doing?” you asked, looking down your nose at him, lying on his side, lounging in your sanctuary. While it was open, it was still yours. He would not take that too.

“What are you doing?”

“That–I’m sitting down. On my blanket. Yours is over there, Cardan.” Your eyebrows furrowed and your arms crossed defensively. He only smiled, ironically soft. You could not look angry if you tried. You were too tired, too weakened for a show of strength. You knew that better than anyone.

“Nicasia can keep it company. Have you eaten today, darling?” he asked, turning away from you, opening the basket. He put his hand inside, but turned to you before he could. He shrugged, his eyes widening comically. “Well? Sit down, won’t you? Lunch doesn’t last forever, dearest.”

You ignored the pet name, sitting down at his command. Ridiculous, you thought. It was your blanket.

“This is my blanket,” you said again. You mentally slapped yourself. Dumb. No wonder he thought you were dumb.

“I’m well aware of that. Now eat something, won’t you?”

“I’m not hungry.” You were. But you would not eat in front of him. You would not be compared to an animal again.

“I wasn’t asking.”

Cardan was suffocating. Once upon a time he had despised you. Now he was treating you like he would someone under his care.

At the beginning of the day, just before you left for school, he would be there, holding food and demanding you take his arm. Then, you two would share a blanket during your lessons. His arm would be around your waist and he would ask if you were too cold. Then you two would eat together. There would be more lessons, and then he’d walk you home. He’d leave you with a kiss on the forehead.

But he would not quite leave. Not really.

He would return later in the night. He would spend hours with you. He’d rub your back as you fell asleep. Sometimes, he’d even sleep with you, leaving you in the morning.

He was always there.

You had not known a moment without him. Not a moment without you being taken into his arms, being told that you were the most exquisite creature to roam the Earth, not a moment without his lips leaving your skin.

It needed to end.

“Cardan, why can’t you just hate me again! It’s suffocating! You despise me, what are you doing?!?”

The crown on his head was tilted, but it did not take away from the poise he oozed. He had given up drinking months before, becoming colder to the world. But he never seemed to not soften when you walked into the room, demanding you sit with him.

“Darling–”

“No. I’m not your darling. You need to stop, King Cardan.”

“You are really referring to me as king when you are queen?” He had stolen the crown that sat atop his head. He had killed off his brothers when they had threatened you. His father died and he had stolen that bloody, jeweled crown. “Stop this nonsense, dear, and sit with me. It’s getting late, and you’re not thinking straight.” He got up from his throne, swiftly moving toward you. He gathered you up in his arms, pressing his lips to the top of your head. “Come on, darling, you must be tired.”

“I am thinking straight.” You struggled in his hold to no avail. “My head is more than clear. You hate me. Go back to hating me. There are far too many reasons for you to hate me rather than treat me like this.”

“You deserve everything I offer you, sweetness. You deserve every ounce of affection I give you and more. The world will be yours whether you want it or not.”

“I don’t want it. I want to go home. Cardan, please–”

“You are home.” You were swept off your feet. “Now come on. We should go to sleep. It’s been a long day.”

In the dimly lit forest of Elfhame, Cardan Greenbriar, the High King of Faerie, and Y/n found themselves venturing through the shadows. The moonlight barely pierced through the dense canopy, casting an ethereal glow upon the foliage. 

As they walked hand in hand, Cardan's raven hair, disheveled as ever, framed his face, emphasizing his sharp features and piercing black eyes. His high cheekbones and pointed ears gave him an otherworldly allure, while a delicate tail swayed behind him. Towering at 5'11, he seemed to effortlessly glide through the darkness. 

Y/n, a human girl known for her ambition, pride, and determination, matched Cardan's stride with grace, her steps steady and confident. Her sarcastic nature was evident in the playful gleam in her eyes. She was skilled with swords and daggers, but in this realm of Faerie, humans were despised. 

As they ventured further into the woods, Y/n's lack of night vision became apparent. With each step, she stumbled slightly, her hand tightening around Cardan's. Sensing her discomfort, he gently guided her, their fingers intertwining like vines. 

"Darling," Cardan's velvety voice whispered, his tone laced with affection, "watch your step. The path can be treacherous." 

Y/n huffed, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Oh, believe me, Your Highness, I'm watching. But it's not exactly easy when I can't see a thing." 

Cardan chuckled softly, the sound a melody in the night. "Well, fear not, my love. For I am here to guide you through the darkness." 

Y/n playfully rolled her eyes. "You know, sometimes I think you enjoy these dramatic moments a little too much."  

As they continued their journey, Y/n's foot landed on Cardan's sensitive tail, he let out a theatrical yelp that echoed through the forest. He hopped on one foot, his face contorted in an exaggerated expression of pain, as he dramatically clutched his tail with both hands. 

"Darling!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with mock despair. "Must you constantly step on my precious tail? Do you not see how delicate it is? It's the epitome of fae elegance!" 

Y/n couldn't help but stifle a giggle, finding Cardan's dramatic display both endearing and amusing. Her eyes twinkled mischievously as she responded, "Oh, please, Cardan. It's not as if I did it on purpose. Besides, I can't see in the dark like you can.”  

Cardan's pout deepened, his hand still cradling his tail. "Ah, the plight of a poor mortal," he sighed dramatically, his tone dripping with exaggerated sympathy. "Blind as a bat, stumbling around and wreaking havoc on fae royalty. Truly, it's a tragedy." 

Y/n playfully rolled her eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Oh, spare me the theatrics, Your Highness," she retorted, her voice filled with playful sarcasm. "You're the one with the tail, after all. Perhaps you should move your delicate tail out of the way next time."  

Cardan paused his hopping and gazed at Y/n with a faux expression of offense, placing a hand over his heart. "Oh, so you think it's my fault now, do you? Blaming the High King for his own impeccable elegance. How dare you!" 

Y/n's laughter rang through the air as she replied, "Well, someone needs to take responsibility for that dangerously attractive tail of yours." 

Cardan's pout transformed into a playful smirk as he approached Y/n, closing the distance between them. He tilted his head, his dark eyes sparkling mischievously. "Ah, so you find my tail dangerously attractive, do you? I must warn you, my dear, it has been known to steal hearts and cause mortals to stumble." 

Y/n raised an eyebrow, a playful challenge in her gaze. "Is that a warning or a promise, High King?" 

Cardan's laughter joined hers, the sound blending harmoniously in the enchanted forest. "Consider it both, my fiery, sarcastic darling. But don't worry, even if you stumble, I'll always be here to catch you. Even if it means nursing my precious tail back to health." 

Their banter continued as they resumed their journey, Cardan's tail swaying gently behind him. Their playful interactions illuminated the darkness, bringing a sense of lightness to their path. In those moments, Y/n realized that Cardan's dramatics and their shared laughter were not just a source of amusement but a reminder of the deep connection they shared—a bond that could withstand any challenge that lay ahead.

As you glanced around nervously, you made impact with a strong chest.Of course he's here.

"Fancy seeing you here." He said.I pull my knifes out,ready to slauggter Cardan

Cardan's face remains unbothered as he stares at you, his face expressionless. He looks at you for a moment before snickering slightly. "Do you think those things will do anything.

Do you want to find out?

Cardan gives you a snarky smirk. He steps closer to you. He raises his hands. "Go on. Try it."

Pull him closer and out the blade right beside his neck,scrathing himCardan freezes for a second as you hold the blade against his throat, a sharp intake of breath coming from him. His eyes are wide, and the smile on his face disappears. A vein on his neck is pounding heavily.

Are you afraid my lord?

Cardan stares at you for a second, he narrows his eyes at you. His expression is cold. "Let me go."You asked for it

As soon as the words leave your mouth, Cardan grabs your wrist and twists it around, holding it behind your back. He moves closer to you, his face inches from yours. "Oh that's not how it works, little one.

I use his weight against him,i elbow him to the stomach,lean forward and tgrow him above me so he is laying ont the ground and i am straddling his lap

Cardan is stunned by the sudden movement. he feels your body press against him, and his cheeks heat slightly. He looks at you with a confused look before clearing his throat to make sure he remains in character. His expression becomes serious again and he tries to push you off

You will refuse the marriage

You have succeeded to hold Cardan down. He struggles against you for a moment, gritting his teeth and trying to push you off. The muscles in his arms flex and his jaw tightens. His expression remains firm.

I can't refuse." He say

Why?

His words are harsh. "Because I've been betrothed since I was born...and my father's life depends on it...I can't back down from something as serious as this

"And why should you mary me"

Our families were locked in a bitter feud and this marriage is the key to keeping peace." He says, remaining serious and stern

Marry my sister Jude,or Taryn or Viviain,why me?!

He sighs slightly. "Because I have heard your reputation and you are a skilled warrior, which is something I look for in a wife." He gives you an annoying smirk. "Not only that, you're quite pretty as well."

Ok,I will accept,but I warn you prince,if you ever wrong me,if you ever touch me if you ever look at me too much or funny,I will slit your throat open like a fish

Cardan's smirk disappears and his eyes narrow. He looks at you for a moment.

"Do you have any idea who you are talking to?"His words carry a sharp tone, and his expression is suddenly cold and ruthless

"I'm prince Cardan Greenbriar, you'll show me some respect or else I will show you your place." He says, his eyes still narrowed. His cold expression is unbothered and he remains stil as a statue.

His expression remains unchanged as he stares at you. "Let me make one thing clear. You are to do what I say. Understand?*he says*

"Oh, really?" He says, leaning his face closer to yours. "Let me show you just how wrong you are."

Before you can even react, he grabs you by the wrist and he spins you around with strength, shoving you up against the tree behind you. His body presses against yours. His face is inches away from yours, his expression is intense

His eyes narrow even further. "Like hell you are."As he struggles against you, he tries to shove you away from him, his eyes now full of rage.

How Old is Fan Fiction?

Prompted by a fan, somewhere on the web, who felt that fanfic was invented in her twenty-five-year lifetime. I can't even..

According to a Wikipedia article[i], it is possible to argue that, initially, fan fiction grew out of readers who met to talk and write about the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft in the late 1800s.   In reality, humans have been making up songs, plays, and stories based on the work of others for millennia.  The common culture of myths and legends that humans share is fertile ground for making up stories with existing characters or circumstances, and sharing them, verbally, or in writing. The phrase fan fiction dates from 1936[ii] and fanfic from 1968[iii], both according to Merriam-Webster Online.

Fans of Lovecraft, and onward, were sharing those commentaries, questions and fanfic via APAs, Amateur Press Associations.  Distribution to like-minded fans, was gradually facilitated by typewriters and carbon copies, spirit duplicators, or Gestetner, and, eventually,  photo-copiers.  These were the tools available to ordinary fans.  Oh, and letter mail to get them to readers. These became fanzines[iv]. 

Even professional writers paddled in the waters of other universes.  the Wikipedia article cites The New Adventures of Alice by John Rae in 1917.  In Textual Poachers,[v] Jenkins mentions T.H. White[vi], Mary Stewart[vii] and Marion Zimmer Bradley[viii] all of whom wrote several reinterpretations of the legends surrounding King Arthur. Slightly more recently Leslie Fish[ix] published a fully novel length, The Weight, taking on the Star Trek (original) universe.  There are literally many thousands more examples of short and long pieces of fiction, art and music, inspired by someone else’s creations.

The glaring difference between then and now has everything to do with computers, the internet and the web.

The personal home computer dates from the late seventies, but was largely unaffordable until roughly a decade after (depending on your family’s affluence).  Wikipedia quotes the magazine Byte which “…’in January 1980 announced in an editorial that the era of off-the-shelf personal computers has arrived”. The magazine also stated that "a desirable contemporary personal computer has 64 K of memory’’”[x] That seems laughable today when our phones have more capacity and functionality than those desktops did.  The adoption of TCP/IP by the US Department of Defense, allowed the beginning of small networks among government departments.  Later it was adopted by major universities and businesses, and we had the Internet.  Almost instantly we had groups of fans getting together by e-mail, and multi-person discussion groups. The next advance was development of hypertext transfer protocol (http) at CERN, followed by the web server and browser.  The search engine came soon after, and the World Wide Web was born.

Today we can have instant communication with anyone else who has a computer and internet service. We can research our topics, share ideas, ask and answer questions and, most of all create and share art, fiction, poems, and songs about the characters and themes we love.
