thought too hard about chip and ollie reunion after the black sea and chip refusing to tell ollie he’s dead.

just like. chip sometimes subconsciously changes what his face looks like, so i imagine ollie can definitely tell when he’s using it and really thinking about it.

Chip trying so hard to not let Ollie know, absolutely to not let him see what he looks like now. Gillion so uncomfortable when Ollie asks about the black sea. Jay acting sad and weird around them. Ollie wanting to see what Chip really looks like so he can figure out what’s going on. What happened. Why everyone’s acting so secretive. They’re a crew, they’re not supposed to hide things, and Ollie’s smart enough to handle it.

Ollie sneaking into the guest room after everyone’s asleep and taking his bandana off while Chip’s asleep. He needs to know. And he’s so horrified when he sees Chip with rotting skin, black and dead around where it’s fully rotted away on his cheeks and forehead. One of his hands fully bone, and he looks so much skinnier.

Chip wakes up to Ollie crying as he stares at him and he’s immediately up and reaching for him as he hurriedly asks “Ollie, what’s wrong? What-“ then notices his hand. His exposed bone. If he still had it, if he were alive, Chip’s heart would have stopped. His gaze fixed on his hand, he reaches his other up to his head, finding the very significant lack of fabric there. His eyes dart back to Ollie, who’s clutching the bandana in his small hand, still forward as if he froze immediately after pulling it from Chip’s head.

“O-Ollie, it’s- I.. Can I have that back?” he asks lowly. Ollie, still crying, doesn’t move. Chip gently takes it from his hand and rushes to tie it back on. He stares at his hand and watches it cover in skin again, letting out a breath. He hopes his face looks normal again as he looks back at Ollie and reaches for his arms. Ollie flinches when he makes contact and his eyes quickly glance towards Chip’s previously bone hand.

“Wha-what happened? Why are you- where’s your- why didn’t you tell me?!”

“Hey, shh. Here, sit down, I’ll-“ Chip groans to himself as he pulls Ollie to sit him down next to him on the bed. “I’ll explain. It’s okay, though, I’m okay! Normal Chip, everything’s fine-“

“Your skin’s gone!”

“Ollie, shh! It’s- sorta gone, but i can make it look like it’s not. I look the same as before.”

“But y-you’re not. You.. tell me what happened.” Ollie says, trying to sound tough like he’s not still crying. Like Chip can’t tell he’s terrified, which is exactly what he was trying to avoid. Another thing he fucked up. Ella’s going to- well, not kill him. Though maybe she’d find a way.

It would have been helpful if he could have planned out something to tell him, instead of this. He thought this was all too much for Ollie, how much was he supposed to tell a kid about dying? About feeling yourself rot away more and more everyday under the facade you put up to make yourself feel even a little bit normal and to keep the others from seeing how bad it is? This isn’t an adventure he can spin in a heroic and entertaining way. He got his heart ripped out and eaten on an island in a sea of horrors, and has been falling apart ever since. Chip curses Ollie’s curiosity. Chip curses himself for getting either of them into this situation. Chip sighs, and turns to face the young boy next to him.

“Okay, uh- so- the first island in the black sea, there were these, like.. evil pirates, and we had to defeat them to save the rest of the survivors on the island. And the captain, Captain Widow, she.. Alright, this is a little hard to.. okay, she uh- ripped my heart out.” Ollie’s eyes go even wider, tears still streaming, and he looks more concerned than ever. Chip feels sick. Maybe he should have left that specific detail out. “I mean- it’s not that bad, I- I woke up like a minute later and I was fine! Except for- you know..” Ollie doesn’t seem very receptive to the “I’m fine” thing, and Chip can’t blame him, but he really wishes he was. He wishes things were different.

“I came back, and.. I’m undead now. That’s why my skin looks like that. Under this. But I’m still Chip, right?” He tries to make it sound like he’s not begging for a “yes”, like he’s not terrified that the answer is a resounding no. He doesn’t fully succeed. Ollie stares at him, and doesn’t answer. Chip tries not to cry.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ollie asks, abandoning that toughness and becoming small again, shy and sad and so similar to how he acted when they first said they were bringing him home. Chip wants to hug him. He wishes this could be as easy as it was to let Ollie know he was always a Riptide Pirate.

“Because you’re a kid. And I know you want to be all.. grown up, I get it, but you’re not. And that’s a good thing. You deserve to just be a kid, Ollie, long as you can. I didn’t want to fuck that up any more than I already have. I didn’t want you to have to deal with this, especially because I am still here. I just wanted it to be normal.”

“But.. you guys were being weird and- I don’t like it when you do that. Hiding things. Crew isn’t supposed to do that.”

“Right, yeah. I-I know, Ollie, but, we were trying to protect you. I was trying to protect you.”

Ollie stays quiet, looking down at his lap. Chip watches him for a moment, and tilts his head as he sees a few more tears fall.

“Hey, Ollie.” It takes a second, but he does look up at him. “I’m sorry for not telling you. I’m sorry you found out like this and that you had to.. see it. That’s all on me, so don’t blame the others either, okay?”

After a few seconds, Ollie surges forward and wraps his arms around Chip. Chip immediately reciprocates the hug, and he can feel Ollie shaking. He frowns and lifts his hand to ruffle Ollie’s hair, squeezing him with his other arm.

“It’s-“

“You’re still Chip.”

And Chip just drops his head, squeezing his eyes shut as they hug tighter than ever.

“Thanks, Ollie.”

Just a thought, but does Akaza feeling the need to become stronger is actually the desire to take care of others/his beloved ones because as Hakuji, he put his greatest strength in taking care of his father and Koyuki, as well as helping Kaizo?

So him being obsessed in being stronger as a demon is just an endless path because without any genuine companions or relationships made with others, he can never be at his best. Him excluding and isolating himself from the other Uppermoons and yet being talkative to humans perhaps come from a buried instinct in detecting people he can connect with?

Also his blood demon art working like a compass magnet feels ironic to his situation of never ending seeking to be stronger since he's alone and has no one to protect and care for.

Why is Lee Soo Hyuk special?

Kim Roksoo: the soul that had his body stolen by the White Star and affected by the curse, potentially originally supposed to be born a Thames

Alberu Crossman: descendant of the ancient White Star + part dark elf, thus overcoming the curse of the Sun God

Choi Han: a single-lifer and nephew of the first Dragon Slayer

Choi Jung Soo: member of Choi family and a wanderer

All of these people seem to have some kind of connection that ties them together and somehow inevitably caught up in the mess.

But Lee Soo Hyuk seems different... So far. Maybe it'll come up later on how his ancestry ties to all of this, but it's fine like this too. Because it means that Lee Soo Hyuk is just special on his own. Even after getting to know him in the Sealed God's test and now in part 2, he still somehow manages to come off as a total enigma.

They all also seem to have some kind of tag attached to them that seemingly transcends being a normal human. Compared to them Lee Soo Hyuk seems kinda... Normal.

Lee Soo Hyuk is just Lee Soo Hyuk. One of the very first ability users in post apocalyptic Korea to awaken two non related abilities. The man who could slash through anything, the man who saved so many people despite growing weary and tired. The man who remained a Team Leader despite having the chance to go higher up just so he could go out to the field and save more people.

The more you think about him, it makes sense why people looked up to and admired him. Lee Soo Hyuk was a true hero.
